¹ And he began to speak to them in parables: A certain man planted a vineyard and made a hedge about it and dug a place for the winefat and built a tower and let it to husbandmen: and went into a far country.

¹³ Thou camest down also to mount Sinai, and didst speak with them from heaven, and thou gavest them right judgments, and the law of truth, ceremonies, and good precepts. ¹⁴ Thou madest known to them thy holy sabbath, and didst prescribe to them commandments, and ceremonies, and the law by the hand of Moses thy servant.

⁶⁸ But he chose the tribe of Juda, mount Sion which he loved. ⁶⁹ And he built his sanctuary as of unicorns, in the land which he founded for ever.

¹⁹ Who declareth his word to Jacob: his justices and his judgments to Israel. ²⁰ He hath not done in like manner to every nation: and his judgments he hath not made manifest to them. Alleluia.

¹¹ The peaceable had a vineyard, in that which hath people: he let out the same to keepers, every man bringeth for the fruit thereof a thousand peices of silver. ¹² My vineyard is before me. A thousand are for thee, the peaceable, and two hundred for them that keep the fruit thereof.

¹ I will sing to my beloved the canticle of my cousin concerning his vineyard. My beloved had a vineyard on a hill in a fruitful place. ² And he fenced it in, and picked the stones out of it, and planted it with the choicest vines, and built a tower in the midst thereof, and set up a winepress therein: and he looked that it should bring forth grapes, and it brought forth wild grapes. ³ And now, O ye inhabitants of Jerusalem, and ye men of Juda, judge between me and my vineyard. ⁴ What is there that I ought to do more to my vineyard, that I have not done to it? was it that I looked that it should bring forth grapes, and it hath brought forth wild grapes?

²³ And it shall come to pass in that day, that every place where there were a thousand vines, at a thousand pieces of silver, shall become thorns and briers.

²¹ Yet, I planted thee a chosen vineyard, all true seed: how then art thou turned unto me into that which is good for nothing, O strange vineyard?

¹¹ And I gave them my statutes, and I shewed them my judgments, which if a man do, he shall live in them. ¹² Moreover I gave them also my sabbaths, to be a sign between me and them: and that they might know that I am the Lord that sanctify them.

¹⁸ And I said to their children in the wilderness: Walk not in the statutes of your fathers, and observe not their judgments, nor be ye defiled with their idols: ¹⁹ I am the Lord your God: walk ye in my statutes, and observe my judgments, and do them. ²⁰ And sanctify my sabbaths, that they may be a sign between me and you: and that you may know that I am the Lord your God.

⁴⁹ And I said: Ah, ah, ah, O Lord God: they say of me: Doth not this man speak by parables?

¹⁰ And his disciples came and said to him: Why speakest thou to them in parables? ¹¹ Who answered and said to them: Because to you it is given to know the mysteries of the kingdom of heaven: but to them it is not given. ¹² For he that hath, to him shall be given, and he shall abound: but he that hath not, from him shall be taken away that also which he hath. ¹³ Therefore do I speak to them in parables: because seeing they see not, and hearing they hear not, neither do they understand. ¹⁴ And the prophecy of Isaias is fulfilled in them, who saith: By hearing you shall hear, and shall not understand: and seeing you shall see, and shall not perceive. ¹⁵ For the heart of this people is grown gross, and with their ears they have been dull of hearing, and their eyes they have shut: lest at any time they should see with their eyes, and hear with their ears, and understand with their heart, and be converted, and I should heal them.

³⁴ All these things Jesus spoke in parables to the multitudes: and without parables he did not speak to them. ³⁵ That it might be fulfilled which was spoken by the prophet, saying: I will open my mouth in parables, I will utter things hidden from the foundation of the world.

²⁸ But what think you? A certain man had two sons: and coming to the first, he said: Son, go work to day in my vineyard.

¹⁴ For even as a man going into a far country called his servants and delivered to them his goods;

² And he taught them many things in parables, and said unto them in his doctrine:

¹¹ And he said to them: To you it is given to know the mystery of the kingdom of God: but to them that are without, all things are done in parables: ¹² That seeing they may see, and not perceive; and hearing they may hear, and not understand; lest at any time they should be converted, and their sins should be forgiven them. ¹³ And he saith to them: Are you ignorant of this, parable? and how shall you know all parables?

³³ And with many such parables, he spoke to them the word, according as they were able to hear. ³⁴ And without parable he did not speak unto them; but apart, he explained all things to his disciples.

¹ And he began to speak to them in parables: A certain man planted a vineyard and made a hedge about it and dug a place for the winefat and built a tower and let it to husbandmen: and went into a far country. ² And at the season he sent to the husbandmen a servant to receive of the husbandmen of the fruit of the vineyard. ³ Who, having laid hands on him, beat and sent him away empty. ⁴ And again he sent to them another servant: and him they wounded in the head and used him reproachfully. ⁵ And again he sent another, and him they killed: and many others, of whom some they beat, and others they killed. ⁶ Therefore, having yet one son, most dear to him, he also sent him unto them last of all, saying: They will reverence my son. ⁷ But the husbandmen said one to another: This is the heir. Come let us kill him and the inheritance shall be ours. ⁸ And laying hold on him, they killed him and cast him out of the vineyard. ⁹ What therefore will the lord of the vineyard do? He will come and destroy those husbandmen and will give the vineyard to others. ¹⁰ And have you not read this scripture, The stone which the builders rejected, the same is made the head of the corner: ¹¹ By the Lord has this been done, and it is wonderful in our eyes. ¹² And they sought to lay hands on him: but they feared the people. For they knew that he spoke this parable to them. And leaving him, they went their way.

³⁴ Even as a man who, going into a far country, left his house and gave authority to his servants over every work and commanded the porter to watch.

¹⁰ To whom he said: To you it is given to know the mystery of the kingdom of God; but to the rest in parables, that seeing they may not see and hearing may not understand.

⁶ He spoke also this parable: A certain man had a fig tree planted in his vineyard: and he came seeking fruit on it and found none. ⁷ And he said to the dresser of the vineyard: Behold, for these three years I come seeking fruit on this fig tree and I find none. Cut it down therefore. Why cumbereth it the ground? ⁸ But he answering, said to him: Lord, let it alone this year also, until I dig about it and dung it. ⁹ And if happily it bear fruit: but if not, then after that thou shalt cut it down.

¹³ And not many days after, the younger son, gathering all together, went abroad into a far country: and there wasted his substance, living riotously.

¹² He said therefore: a certain nobleman went into a far country, to receive for himself a kingdom and to return.

⁹ And he began to speak to the people this parable: A certain man planted a vineyard and let it out to husbandmen: and he was abroad for a long time. ¹⁰ And at the season he sent a servant to the husbandmen, that they should give him of the fruit of the vineyard. Who, beating him, sent him away empty. ¹¹ And again he sent another servant. But they beat him also and, treating him reproachfully, sent him away empty. ¹² And again he sent the third: and they wounded him also and cast him out. ¹³ Then the lord of the vineyard said: What shall I do? I will send my beloved son. It may be, when they see him, they will reverence him. ¹⁴ Whom, when the husbandmen saw, they thought within themselves, saying: This is the heir. Let us kill him, that the inheritance may be ours. ¹⁵ So casting him out of the vineyard, they killed him. What therefore will the lord of the vineyard do to them? ¹⁶ He will come and will destroy these husbandmen and will give the vineyard to others. Which they hearing, said to him: God forbid. ¹⁷ But he looking on them, said: What is this then that is written, The stone, which the builders rejected, the same is become the head of the corner? ¹⁸ Whosoever shall fall upon that stone shall be bruised: and upon whomsoever it shall fall, it will grind him to powder. ¹⁹ And the chief priests and the scribes sought to lay hands on him the same hour: but they feared the people, for they knew that he spoke this parable to them.

⁹ But they said: Where wilt thou that we prepare?

¹ I am the true vine: and my Father is the husbandman. ² Every branch in me that beareth not fruit, he will take away: and every one that beareth fruit, he will purge it, that it may bring forth more fruit. ³ Now you are clean, by reason of the word which I have spoken to you. ⁴ Abide in me: and I in you. As the branch cannot bear fruit of itself, unless it abide in the vine, so neither can you, unless you abide in me. ⁵ I am the vine: you the branches. He that abideth in me, and I in him, the same beareth much fruit: for without me you can do nothing. ⁶ If any one abide not in me, he shall be cast forth as a branch and shall wither: and they shall gather him up and cast him into the fire: and he burneth. ⁷ If you abide in me and my words abide in you, you shall ask whatever you will: and it shall be done unto you. ⁸ In this is my Father glorified: that you bring forth very much fruit and become my disciples.

³⁸ This is he that was in the church in the wilderness, with the angel who spoke to him on Mount Sina and with our fathers. Who received the words of life to give unto us.

⁴⁶ Who found grace before God and desired to find a tabernacle for the God of Jacob. ⁴⁷ But Solomon built him a house,

¹ What advantage then hath the Jew: or what is the profit of circumcision? ² Much every way. First indeed, because the words of God were committed to them.

⁴ Who are Israelites: to whom belongeth the adoption as of children and the glory and the testament and the giving of the law and the service of God and the promises: ⁵ Whose are the fathers and of whom is Christ, according to the flesh, who is over all things, God blessed for ever. Amen.

¹⁷ And if some of the branches be broken and thou, being a wild olive, art ingrafted in them and art made partaker of the root and of the fatness of the olive tree: ¹⁸ Boast not against the branches. But if thou boast, thou bearest not the root: but the root thee. ¹⁹ Thou wilt say then: The branches were broken off that I might be grafted in. ²⁰ Well: because of unbelief they were broken off. But thou standest by faith. Be not highminded, but fear. ²¹ For if God hath not spared the natural branches, fear lest perhaps also he spare not thee. ²² See then the goodness and the severity of God: towards them indeed that are fallen, the severity; but towards thee, the goodness of God, if thou abide in goodness. Otherwise thou also shalt be cut off. ²³ And they also, if they abide not still in unbelief, shall be grafted in: for God is able to graft them in again. ²⁴ For if thou were cut out of the wild olive tree, which is natural to thee; and, contrary to nature, wert grafted into the good olive tree: how much more shall they that are the natural branches be grafted into their own olive tree?
