¹ ¶ Now the sons of Reuben, the firstborn of Israel, (for he was the firstborn, but because he defiled his father’s bed, his birthright was given unto the sons of Joseph, the son of Israel; and he was not counted as the firstborn. ² For Judah prevailed above his brethren and was their prince, but the birthright was Joseph’s:) ³ The sons, therefore, of Reuben, the firstborn of Israel, were Enoch, Pallu, Hezron, and Carmi. ⁴ The sons of Joel: Shemaiah, his son, Gog, his son, Shimei, his son, ⁵ Micah, his son, Reaia, his son, Baal, his son, ⁶ Beerah, his son, whom Tilgathpilneser, king of Assyria, carried away captive. He was prince of the Reubenites. ⁷ And his brethren by their families, when the genealogy of their generations was reckoned, had as princes, Jeiel and Zechariah. ⁸ And Bela, the son of Azaz, the son of Shema, the son of Joel, dwelt in Aroer, even until Nebo and Baalmeon. ⁹ And eastward he inhabited unto the entering in of the wilderness from the river Euphrates, because their livestock were multiplied in the land of Gilead. ¹⁰ And in the days of Saul they made war with the Hagarites, {Ishmaelites}, who fell by their hand, and they dwelt in their tents throughout all the east land of Gilead. ¹¹ And the sons of Gad dwelt over against them, in the land of Bashan unto Salchah. ¹² Joel, the chief, and Shapham, second, and Jaanai and Shaphat in Bashan. ¹³ And their brethren of the house of their fathers were Michael, Meshullam, Sheba, Jorai, Jachan, Zia, and Heber, seven. ¹⁴ These were the sons of Abihail, the son of Huri, the son of Jaroah, the son of Gilead, the son of Michael, the son of Jeshishai, the son of Jahdo, the son of Buz. ¹⁵ Also Ahi, the son of Abdiel, the son of Guni, was the prince of the house of their fathers. ¹⁶ And they dwelt in Gilead in Bashan and in her towns and in all the suburbs of Sharon, upon their goings forth. ¹⁷ All these were reckoned by their generations in the days of Jotham, king of Judah, and in the days of Jeroboam, king of Israel. ¹⁸ ¶ The sons of Reuben and of Gad and half the tribe of Manasseh, valiant men, men able to bear buckler and sword and to shoot with bow and skillful in war were forty-four thousand seven hundred and sixty, that went out to the war. ¹⁹ And they made war with the Hagarites, with Jetur and Nephish and Nodab. ²⁰ And they were helped against them, and the Hagarites were delivered into their hand and all that were with them, for they cried to God in the battle, and he was intreated of them because they put their trust in him. ²¹ And they took away their livestock; fifty thousand camels and two hundred and fifty thousand sheep and two thousand asses and one hundred thousand persons. ²² For there fell down many slain because the war was of God. And they dwelt in their steads until the captivity. ²³ And the sons of the half tribe of Manasseh dwelt in the land; they increased from Bashan unto Baalhermon and Senir and unto Mount Hermon. ²⁴ And these were the heads of the houses of their fathers: Epher, Ishi, Eliel, Azriel, Jeremiah, Hodaviah, and Jahdiel, mighty men of valour, famous men, and heads of the houses of their fathers. ²⁵ But they rebelled against the God of their fathers and fornicated after the gods of the people of the land, whom God had destroyed before them. ²⁶ And for this the God of Israel stirred up the spirit of Pul, king of Assyria, and the spirit of Tilgathpilneser, king of Assyria, and he carried away the Reubenites and the Gadites and the half tribe of Manasseh and brought them unto Halah and Habor and Hara and to the River Gozan, unto this day.

²³ And the LORD said unto her, Two nations are in thy womb, and two manner of peoples shall be separated from thy bowels; and the one people shall be stronger than the other people; and the elder shall serve the younger.

³² And Leah conceived and gave birth to a son, and she called his name Reuben; for she said, Surely the LORD has looked upon my affliction; now therefore my husband will love me.

²² And it came to pass when Israel dwelt in that land, that Reuben went and lay with Bilhah, his father’s concubine, and Israel heard of it. Now the sons of Jacob were twelve:

⁸ And these are the names of the sons of Israel, who came into Egypt, Jacob and his sons: Reuben, Jacob’s firstborn.

¹⁵ And he blessed Joseph and said, God, before whom my fathers Abraham and Isaac walked, the God who has fed me all my life long unto this day, ¹⁶ the Angel who frees me from all evil, bless these young men, and let my name be named on them, and the name of my fathers Abraham and Isaac; and let them grow into a multitude in the midst of the earth. ¹⁷ Then Joseph seeing that his father laid his right hand upon the head of Ephraim, it displeased him; and he held up his father’s hand, to remove it from Ephraim’s head unto Manasseh’s head. ¹⁸ And Joseph said unto his father, Not so, my father, for this is the firstborn; put thy right hand upon his head. ¹⁹ And his father refused and said, I know it, my son, I know it; he also shall become a people, and he also shall be great; but truly his younger brother shall be greater than he, and his seed shall become a multitude of Gentiles. ²⁰ And he blessed them that day, saying, In thee shall Israel bless, saying, God make thee as Ephraim and as Manasseh. And he set Ephraim before Manasseh. ²¹ And Israel said unto Joseph, Behold, I die; but God shall be with you and bring you again unto the land of your fathers. ²² Moreover I have given to thee one portion above thy brethren, which I took out of the hand of the Amorite with my sword and with my bow.

³ Reuben, thou art my firstborn, my might, and the beginning of my strength, principal in dignity, and the principal in power. ⁴ Unstable as water, thou shalt not be principal because thou didst go up to thy father’s bed; then thou became defiled, going up to my couch.

¹⁴ ¶ These are the heads of their fathers’ families: The sons of Reuben, the firstborn of Israel: Enoch, Pallu, Hezron, and Carmi; these are the families of Reuben.

⁸ The nakedness of thy father’s wife thou shalt not uncover; it is thy father’s nakedness.

¹¹ And the man that lies with his father’s wife has uncovered his father’s nakedness; both of them shall surely die; their blood shall be upon them.

⁵ And these are the names of the men that shall stand with you: of the tribe of Reuben, Elizur, the son of Shedeur;

¹ ¶ Now Korah, the son of Izhar, the son of Kohath, the son of Levi, and Dathan and Abiram, the sons of Eliab, and On, the son of Peleth, of the sons of Reuben, took men;

⁵ ¶ Reuben, firstborn of Israel; the sons of Reuben: Enoch, of whom was the family of the Enochites; of Pallu, the family of the Palluites;

¹⁷ but he shall acknowledge the son of the hated as the firstborn by giving him a double portion of all that he has; for he is the beginning of his strength; the right of the firstborn is his.

²⁰ Cursed is he that lies with his father’s wife because he uncovers his father’s skirt. And all the people shall say, Amen.

⁶ ¶ Then the sons of Judah came unto Joshua in Gilgal, and Caleb, the son of Jephunneh the Kenezite, said unto him, Thou knowest the thing that the LORD said unto Moses, the man of God, concerning me and thee in Kadeshbarnea.

⁶ ¶ And it came to pass, when they were come, that he looked on Eliab and said, Peradventure is the LORD’s anointed before him? ⁷ And the LORD replied unto Samuel, Do not look on his countenance or on the height of his stature because I have refused him, for it is not as man sees, for man looks on the outward appearance, but the LORD looks on the heart. ⁸ Then Jesse called Abinadab and made him pass before Samuel. And he said, Neither has the LORD chosen this one. ⁹ Then Jesse made Shammah to pass by. And he said, Neither has the LORD chosen this one. ¹⁰ Again, Jesse made his seven sons pass before Samuel, but Samuel said unto Jesse, The LORD has not chosen these. ¹¹ And Samuel said unto Jesse, Are all thy young men here? And he said, There remains yet the youngest, and, behold, he keeps the sheep. And Samuel said unto Jesse, Send for him, for we will not sit down to the table until he comes here.

¹ ¶ These are the sons of Israel: Reuben, Simeon, Levi, Judah, Issachar, Zebulun,

¹⁰ Of Hosah, of the sons of Merari: Simri, the chief, (for though he was not the firstborn, yet his father made him the chief)

¹ ¶ It is reported commonly that there is fornication among you, and such fornication as is not so much as named among the Gentiles, that one should have his father’s wife.

¹⁵ who is the image of the invisible God, the firstborn of every creature;

²³ The sons of Leah: Reuben, Jacob’s firstborn, Simeon, Levi, Judah, Issachar, and Zebulun.

⁸ ¶ Judah, thou art he whom thy brethren shall praise; thy hand shall be on the neck of thine enemies; thy father’s sons shall bow down before thee. ⁹ Judah is a lion’s whelp; from the prey, my son, thou art gone up; he stooped down, he couched as a lion and as an old lion; who shall rouse him up? ¹⁰ The sceptre shall not be taken from Judah, nor the lawgiver from between his feet until Shiloh comes; and unto him shall the gathering of the people be.

²⁶ The blessings of thy father were greater than the blessings of my progenitors; unto the borders of the eternal hills they shall be upon the head of Joseph and on the crown of the Nazarite of his brethren.

³ ¶ These shall pitch toward the sunrise, on the east: the standard of the camp of Judah throughout their hosts and the prince of the sons of Judah, Nahshon, the son of Amminadab.

¹² And he that offered his offering the first day was Nahshon, the son of Amminadab, of the tribe of Judah.

² And the LORD said, Judah shall go up; behold, I have delivered the land into his hands.

¹ ¶ And the LORD said unto Samuel, How long wilt thou mourn for Saul, seeing I have rejected him from reigning over Israel? Fill thy horn with oil and go; I will send thee to Jesse of Bethlehem for I have provided me a king among his sons.

¹⁰ Again, Jesse made his seven sons pass before Samuel, but Samuel said unto Jesse, The LORD has not chosen these.

¹² And he sent and brought him in. Now he was ruddy and of a beautiful countenance and handsome. And the LORD said, Arise, anoint him, for this is he.

¹⁵ ¶ And David reigned over all Israel, and David executed justice and righteousness unto all his people.

⁷ Gilead is mine, and Manasseh is mine; Ephraim also is the strength of my head; Judah is my lawgiver;

⁶⁸ But chose the tribe of Judah, the Mount Zion which he loved. ⁶⁹ And he built his sanctuary in preeminence like the earth which he has established for ever. ⁷⁰ He chose David also his slave and took him from the sheepfolds, ⁷¹ from following the ewes great with young, he brought him to feed Jacob his people and Israel his inheritance.

⁸ Gilead shall be mine; Manasseh shall be mine; Ephraim also shall be the strength of my head; Judah shall be my lawgiver;

⁵ Behold, the days come, saith the LORD, that I will raise unto David a righteous Branch, and a King shall reign and prosper and shall execute judgment and righteousness in the earth. ⁶ In his days Judah shall be saved, and Israel shall dwell safely: and this shall be his name by which they shall call him, THE LORD OUR RIGHTEOUSNESS.

² But thou, Bethlehem Ephratah, though thou be little among the thousands of Judah, yet out of thee shall he come forth unto me that is to be Lord in Israel; and his goings forth are from the beginning, from the days of the ages.

⁶ And thou Bethlehem, in the land of Juda, art not the least among the princes of Juda, for out of thee shall come a Leader that shall shepherd my people Israel.

²⁹ ¶ For unto those whom he knew beforehand, he also marked out beforehand the way that they might be conformed to the image of his Son, that he might be the firstborn among many brethren.

¹⁴ For it is manifest that our Lord sprang out of Juda, of which tribe Moses spoke nothing concerning priesthood.

⁵ And one of the elders said unto me, Weep not: behold, the Lion of the tribe of Juda, the Root of David, who has overcome to open the book and to loose its seven seals.

⁹ And the sons of Reuben: Enoch, Phallu, Hezron, and Carmi.

⁵ ¶ Reuben, firstborn of Israel; the sons of Reuben: Enoch, of whom was the family of the Enochites; of Pallu, the family of the Palluites; ⁶ of Hezron, the family of the Hezronites; of Carmi, the family of the Carmites. ⁷ These are the families of the Reubenites; and those numbered were forty-three thousand seven hundred and thirty. ⁸ And the sons of Pallu: Eliab. ⁹ And the sons of Eliab: Nemuel, Dathan, and Abiram. This is that Dathan and Abiram, who were famous in the congregation, who strove against Moses and against Aaron in the company of Korah, when they strove against the LORD.

²⁹ In the days of Pekah, king of Israel, came Tiglathpileser, king of Assyria, and took Ijon, Abelbethmaachah, Janoah, Kedesh, Hazor, Gilead, Galilee, and all the land of Naphtali and carried them captive to Assyria.

⁷ So Ahaz sent messengers to Tiglathpileser, king of Assyria, saying, I am thy slave and thy son; come up and save me out of the hand of the king of Syria and out of the hand of the king of Israel, who have risen up against me.

²⁶ And for this the God of Israel stirred up the spirit of Pul, king of Assyria, and the spirit of Tilgathpilneser, king of Assyria, and he carried away the Reubenites and the Gadites and the half tribe of Manasseh and brought them unto Halah and Habor and Hara and to the River Gozan, unto this day.

²⁰ And Tilgathpilneser, king of Assyria, came unto him, and distressed him but did not strengthen him.

¹⁷ All these were reckoned by their generations in the days of Jotham, king of Judah, and in the days of Jeroboam, king of Israel.

³⁴ And the sons of Gad built Dibon and Ataroth and Aroer

³⁸ and Nebo and Baalmeon (their names being changed) and Shibmah and gave other names unto the cities which they built.

⁴⁹ Climb up into this mountain Abarim, unto Mount Nebo, which is in the land of Moab, that is over against Jericho, and behold the land of Canaan, which I give as inheritance unto the sons of Israel,

¹ ¶ And Moses went up from the plains of Moab unto the mountain of Nebo to the top of Pisgah, that is over against Jericho. And the LORD showed him all the land of Gilead, unto Dan,

¹⁷ Heshbon and all her cities that are in the plain, Dibon, and Bamothbaal and Bethbaalmeon,

⁴ The sons of Joel: Shemaiah, his son, Gog, his son, Shimei, his son,

² He is gone up to Bajith and to Dibon, the altars, to weep; Moab shall howl over Nebo and over Medeba: every head among her shall become bald, and every beard shall be cut off.

² The cities of Aroer are forsaken; they shall be for flocks, which shall lie down, and none shall make them afraid.

⁹ therefore, behold, I will open the side of Moab from the cities, from his cities which are on his frontiers, the desirable lands of Bethjeshimoth and Baalmeon and Kiriathaim,

⁸ And he spoke unto them, saying, Return with great riches unto your tents and with a great amount of cattle with silver, with gold, with brass, with iron, and with very much clothing; divide the spoil of your enemies with your brethren. ⁹ And the sons of Reuben and the sons of Gad and the half tribe of Manasseh returned, departing from the sons of Israel out of Shiloh, which is in the land of Canaan, to go unto the country of Gilead, to the land of their possession, of which they were the possessors, according to the word of the LORD by the hand of Moses.

⁹ ¶ And Sarah saw the son of Hagar the Egyptian, whom she had born unto Abraham, mocking.

¹² Now these are the generations of Ishmael, son of Abraham, whom Hagar the Egyptian, Sarah’s handmaid, gave birth unto Abraham:

¹⁸ ¶ The sons of Reuben and of Gad and half the tribe of Manasseh, valiant men, men able to bear buckler and sword and to shoot with bow and skillful in war were forty-four thousand seven hundred and sixty, that went out to the war. ¹⁹ And they made war with the Hagarites, with Jetur and Nephish and Nodab. ²⁰ And they were helped against them, and the Hagarites were delivered into their hand and all that were with them, for they cried to God in the battle, and he was intreated of them because they put their trust in him. ²¹ And they took away their livestock; fifty thousand camels and two hundred and fifty thousand sheep and two thousand asses and one hundred thousand persons.

⁶ The tents of Edom and the Ishmaelites; of Moab and the Hagarenes;

³⁴ And the sons of Gad built Dibon and Ataroth and Aroer ³⁵ and Atroth-shophan and Jaazer and Jogbehah ³⁶ and Bethnimrah and Bethharan, fenced cities, and also folds for sheep.

¹⁰ all the cities of the plain and all Gilead and all Bashan unto Salchah and Edrei, cities of the kingdom of Og in Bashan. ¹¹ For only Og, king of Bashan, had remained of the remnant of giants; behold, his bedstead was a bedstead of iron; is it not in Rabbath of the sons of Ammon? Nine cubits was the length thereof and four cubits the breadth of it, after the cubit of a man. ¹² ¶ And this land, which we inherited at that time, from Aroer, which is by the river Arnon, and half of Mount Gilead and the cities thereof, I gave unto the Reubenites and to the Gadites. ¹³ And the rest of Gilead and all Bashan (fertile ground), being the kingdom of Og, gave I unto the half tribe of Manasseh: all the region of Argob, with all Bashan, which was called the land of giants. ¹⁴ Jair, the son of Manasseh, took all the country of Argob unto the border of Geshuri and Maachathi and called them after his own name, Bashanhavothjair, unto this day. ¹⁵ And I gave Gilead unto Machir. ¹⁶ And unto the Reubenites and unto the Gadites I gave from Gilead even unto the river Arnon, half the valley for a border even unto the river Jabbok, which is the border of the sons of Ammon, ¹⁷ the plain also and the Jordan and the border thereof from Chinnereth even unto the sea of the plain, even the salt sea, under Ashdothpisgah eastward.

¹¹ and Gilead and the borders of the Geshur and Maachath and all Mount Hermon and all Bashan unto Salcah;

²⁴ Moses likewise gave unto the tribe of Gad, to the sons of Gad according to their families. ²⁵ And their border was Jazer, and all the cities of Gilead and half of the land of the sons of Ammon, unto Aroer that is before Rabbah, ²⁶ and from Heshbon unto Ramathmizpeh, and Betonim, and from Mahanaim unto the border of Debir, ²⁷ and the valley of Betharam and Bethnimrah and Succoth and Zaphon, the rest of the kingdom of Sihon, king of Heshbon, the Jordan and its border, even unto the edge of the sea of Chinnereth on the other side of the Jordan eastward. ²⁸ This is the inheritance of the sons of Gad according to their families, these cities with their villages.

²⁹ and over the cows that fed in Sharon was Shitrai, the Sharonite; and over the cows that were in the valleys was Shaphat, the son of Adlai;

¹ ¶ I am the lily of the field {Heb. Sharon} and the rose of the valleys.

² It shall blossom abundantly and shall also praise and sing for joy; the honour of Lebanon shall be given unto it, the beauty of Carmel and Sharon. They shall see the glory of the LORD and the beauty of our God.

¹⁶ And Jehoash slept with his fathers and was buried in Samaria with the kings of Israel; and Jeroboam, his son, reigned in his stead.

²³ ¶ In the fifteenth year of Amaziah, the son of Joash, king of Judah, Jeroboam, the son of Joash, king of Israel, began to reign in Samaria and reigned forty-one years.

²⁸ Now the rest of the acts of Jeroboam and all that he did and his might, how he warred and how he recovered Damascus and Hamath to Judah in Israel, are they not written in the book of the chronicles of the kings of Israel?

⁵ And the LORD smote the king so that he was a leper unto the day of his death and dwelt in a separate house. And Jotham, the king’s son, was over the house, judging the people of the land.

³² ¶ In the second year of Pekah, the son of Remaliah, king of Israel, Jotham, the son of Uzziah, king of Judah, began to reign.

¹ ¶ Jotham was twenty-five years old when he began to reign, and he reigned sixteen years in Jerusalem. His mother’s name was Jerushah, the daughter of Zadok.

³ from twenty years old and upward, all that are able to go forth to war in Israel; thou and Aaron shall number them by their hosts.

¹² And the sons of Reuben and the sons of Gad and half the tribe of Manasseh passed armed before the sons of Israel, as Moses had said unto them. ¹³ About forty thousand men prepared for war passed over before the LORD unto battle, towards the plains of Jericho.

¹⁵ Hadar, Tema, Jetur, Naphish, and Kedemah.

³¹ Jetur, Naphish, and Kedemah. These are the sons of Ishmael.

¹⁰ And in the days of Saul they made war with the Hagarites, {Ishmaelites}, who fell by their hand, and they dwelt in their tents throughout all the east land of Gilead.

¹¹ And it came to pass, when Moses held up his hand, that Israel prevailed; but when he let down his hand, Amalek prevailed.

¹⁴ And there was no day like that before it or after it that the LORD hearkened unto the voice of a man; for the LORD fought for Israel.

⁴² All these kings and their lands Joshua took at one time because the LORD God of Israel fought for Israel.

¹² Then Samuel took a stone and set it between Mizpeh and Shen and called the name of it Ebenezer, saying, Thus far the LORD has helped us.

¹⁵ And Saul sent the messengers again to see David, saying, Bring him up to me in the bed that I may slay him.

⁴⁴ If thy people go out to battle against their enemies by the way which thou shalt send them and shall pray unto the LORD toward the city which thou hast chosen and toward the house that I have built for thy name, ⁴⁵ thou shalt hear in the heavens their prayer and their supplication and do their judgment.

³² And when the captains of the chariots saw Jehoshaphat, they said, Surely this is the king of Israel. And they turned aside to fight against him, but Jehoshaphat cried out.

²² For there fell down many slain because the war was of God. And they dwelt in their steads until the captivity.

¹³ ¶ But Jeroboam caused an ambush to come about behind them; so they were before Judah, and the ambush was behind them. ¹⁴ So when Judah looked back, behold, the battle was before and behind; and they cried unto the LORD, and the priests sounded with the trumpets. ¹⁵ Then the men of Judah gave a shout, and as the men of Judah shouted, it came to pass that God smote Jeroboam and all Israel before Abijah and Judah.

¹⁰ Then Asa went out against him, and they ordered the battle in the valley of Zephathah at Mareshah. ¹¹ And Asa cried unto the LORD his God and said, LORD, it is nothing with thee to help, whether with many or with those that have no power; help us, O LORD our God, for we rely on thee, and in thy name we go against this multitude. O LORD, thou art our God; do not let man prevail against thee. ¹² So the LORD smote the Ethiopians before Asa and before Judah, and the Ethiopians fled. ¹³ And Asa and the people that were with him pursued them unto Gerar, and the Ethiopians were overthrown until there were none left alive, for they were destroyed before the LORD and before his host, and they carried away very much spoil.

³¹ And when the captains of the chariots saw Jehoshaphat, they said, It is the king of Israel. Therefore, they compassed about him to fight; but Jehoshaphat cried out, and the LORD helped him; and God separated them from him.

¹² O our God, wilt thou not judge them? For we have no might against this great company that comes against us; we do not know what to do; but our eyes are fixed upon thee.

²⁰ And for this cause Hezekiah, the king, and the prophet Isaiah, the son of Amoz, prayed and cried to heaven. ²¹ And the LORD sent an angel who cut off all the mighty men of valour and the captains and the princes in the camp of the king of Assyria. So he returned with shame of face to his own land. And as he entered into the house of his god, those that had come forth of his own bowels slew him there with the sword.

¹⁰ And those that know thy name will put their trust in thee: for thou, O LORD, hast not forsaken those that seek thee.

⁷ Some trust in chariots and some in horses, but we will remember the name of the LORD our God. ⁸ They are brought down and fallen, but we are risen and stand upright.

⁴ Our fathers trusted in thee: they trusted, and thou didst deliver them. ⁵ They cried unto thee and were delivered: they trusted in thee and were not confounded.

¹ To the Overcomer:
for the sons of Korah, A Song upon Alamoth. ¶ God is our refuge and strength, a very present help in tribulation.

¹¹ For the LORD God is a sun and shield unto us; the LORD will give grace and glory; he will not withhold good from those that walk uprightly. ¹² O LORD of the hosts, happy is the man that trusts in thee.

⁵ ¶ Happy is he who has the God of Jacob for his help, whose hope is in the LORD his God; ⁶ who made the heavens and the earth, the sea and all that is therein; who keeps truth for ever:

⁷ Blessed is the man that is steadfast in the LORD and whose trust is the LORD. ⁸ For he shall be as a tree planted by the waters, that spreads out her roots by the river and shall not see when heat comes, but her leaf shall be green and shall not be fatigued in the year of drought, neither shall cease from yielding fruit.

⁷ The LORD is good, a stronghold in the day of trouble; and he knows those that trust in him.

¹² so that we should be to the praise of his glory, those of us who first trusted in the Christ.

³⁵ and thirty-two thousand persons in all, of women that had not known a man by lying with him.

¹³ and cinnamon and odours and ointments and frankincense and wine and oil and fine flour, and wheat, and beasts, and of sheep, and of horses, and of chariots and of bodies and souls of men.

¹⁰ One man of you has chased a thousand; for the LORD your God, he himself has fought for you, as he has promised you.

⁶ In the ninth year of Hosea, the king of Assyria took Samaria and carried Israel away into Assyria and placed them in Halah and in Habor by the river of Gozan and in the cities of the Medes.

⁴¹ And these written by name came in the days of Hezekiah, king of Judah and smote their tents and the habitations that were found there and destroyed them utterly unto this day and dwelt in their place because there was pasture there for their flocks.

²⁶ The sons of Elkanah: Zophai, his son, and Nahath, his son,

⁸ With him is an arm of flesh, but with us is the LORD our God to help us and to fight our battles. And the people were upheld by the words of Hezekiah, king of Judah.

³¹ ¶ What shall we then say to these things? If God is for us, who shall be against us?

⁸ And we also took at that time out of the hand of the two kings of the Amorites the land that was on this side of the Jordan, from the river of Arnon unto Mount Hermon ⁹ (which Hermon the Sidonians call Sirion and the Amorites call it Shenir) and

²⁹ And Moses also gave unto the half tribe of Manasseh, and it belonged to the half tribe of the sons of Manasseh according to their families. ³⁰ Their border was from Mahanaim, all Bashan, all the kingdom of Og king of Bashan, and all the towns of Jair, which are in Bashan, sixty cities. ³¹ And half of Gilead and Ashtaroth and Edrei, cities of the kingdom of Og in Bashan, were given to the sons of Machir, the son of Manasseh, even to one half of the sons of Machir, according to their families.

³ as the dew of Hermon, that descends upon the mountains of Zion; for there the LORD commands blessing and eternal life.

⁸ ¶ With me from Lebanon, my spouse, thou shalt come with me from Lebanon; thou shalt look from the top of Amana, from the top of Shenir and Hermon, from the lions’ dens, from the mountains of the leopards.

³⁸ These mentioned by their names were princes in their families, and they were multiplied greatly in the house of their fathers.

¹⁵ Therefore thou shalt not make a covenant with the inhabitants of that land because they shall fornicate after their gods and do sacrifice unto their gods, and they shall call thee, and thou shalt eat of their sacrifices

¹⁵ ¶ But Jeshurun (the upright one) waxed fat and kicked; (thou art waxen fat, thou art grown thick, thou hast covered thyself) and forsook the God who made him and lightly esteemed the strong One of his saving health. ¹⁶ They provoked him to jealousy with strange gods; with abominations they provoked him to anger. ¹⁷ They sacrificed unto devils, not to God, to gods whom they knew not, to new gods that came from nearby, whom your fathers feared not. ¹⁸ Of the strong One that begat thee thou art unmindful and hast forgotten the God that travailed for thee.

¹² And they forsook the LORD God of their fathers, who brought them out of the land of Egypt, and followed other gods, of the gods of the peoples that were round about them, and bowed themselves unto them and provoked the LORD to anger.

¹⁷ And yet they would not hearken unto their judges, but they fornicated after other gods and bowed themselves unto them; they turned quickly out of the way which their fathers had walked hearing the commandments of the LORD; but they did not do so.

³³ And it came to pass as soon as Gideon was dead that the sons of Israel turned again and fornicated after the Baalim and made Baalberith their god.

⁷ ¶ For so it was that the sons of Israel had sinned against the LORD their God, who had brought them up out of the land of Egypt, from under the hand of Pharaoh king of Egypt, and had feared other gods ⁸ and walked in the statutes of the Gentiles, whom the LORD had cast out from before the sons of Israel, and in the statutes of the kings of Israel, which they had made. ⁹ And the sons of Israel had secretly done those things that were not right against the LORD their God, building themselves high places in all their cities, from the towers of the watchmen to the fenced cities. ¹⁰ And they had set themselves up images and groves in every high hill and under every green tree; ¹¹ and there they burnt incense in all the high places like the Gentiles, whom the LORD had carried away before them, and wrought wicked things to provoke the LORD to anger: ¹² serving idols, of which the LORD had said unto them, Ye shall not do this. ¹³ Yet the LORD testified against Israel and against Judah, by all the prophets and by all the seers, saying, Turn from your evil ways and keep my commandments and my statutes, according to all the law which I commanded your fathers and which I sent to you by the hand of my slaves the prophets. ¹⁴ Notwithstanding, they would not hear, but hardened their necks, like to the neck of their fathers, who had never believed in the LORD their God. ¹⁵ And they rejected his statutes and his covenant that he made with their fathers and his testimonies which he testified against them, and they followed vanity and became vain and went after the Gentiles that were round about them, concerning whom the LORD had charged them, that they should not do like them. ¹⁶ And they left all the commandments of the LORD their God and made themselves molten images, even two calves, and made groves and worshipped all the host of heaven and served Baal; ¹⁷ and they caused their sons and their daughters to pass through the fire and used divination and enchantments and sold themselves to do evil in the sight of the LORD, to provoke him to anger. ¹⁸ Therefore, the LORD was very angry with Israel and removed them out of his sight; there was none left but the tribe of Judah only.

¹⁴ ¶ Now after Amaziah came back from the slaughter of the Edomites, he brought the gods of the sons of Seir and set them up to be his gods and bowed down before them and burned incense unto them. ¹⁵ Therefore, the anger of the LORD was kindled against Amaziah, and he sent him a prophet who said unto him, Why hast thou sought after the gods of a people who could not deliver their own people out of thy hand?

³⁴ ¶ They did not destroy the nations, concerning whom the LORD commanded them: ³⁵ But were mingled among the Gentiles and learned their works. ³⁶ And they served their idols, which were a snare unto them. ³⁷ Yea, they sacrificed their sons and their daughters unto devils ³⁸ and shed innocent blood, even the blood of their sons and of their daughters, whom they sacrificed unto the idols of Canaan; and the land was polluted with blood. ³⁹ Thus they were defiled with their own works and went a whoring with their own inventions.

² ¶ The beginning of the word of the LORD with Hosea. And the LORD said to Hosea, Go, take unto thee a wife of whoredoms and children of whoredoms: for the land shall give itself over to whoredom by departing from the LORD.

¹ ¶ Do not rejoice, O Israel, for joy, as the peoples; for thou hast gone a whoring from thy God, thou hast loved the salary of a harlot upon every threshing floor.

⁵ and upon her forehead was a name written, MYSTERY, BABYLON THE GREAT, THE MOTHER OF THE HARLOTS AND OF THE ABOMINATIONS OF THE EARTH.

¹ ¶ And again the anger of the LORD was kindled against Israel, and he incited David against them to say, Go, number Israel and Judah.

¹⁹ And Pul, the king of Assyria, came against the land; and Menahem gave Pul a thousand talents of silver that his hand might be with him to confirm the kingdom in his hand.

¹¹ And the king of Assyria carried away Israel unto Assyria and put them in Halah and in Habor by the river of Gozan and in the cities of the Medes:

¹² Peradventure have the gods of the Gentiles delivered those whom my fathers have destroyed, as Gozan, Haran, Rezeph, and the sons of Eden, who were in Thelasar?

⁶ Beerah, his son, whom Tilgathpilneser, king of Assyria, carried away captive. He was prince of the Reubenites.

¹¹ ¶ Therefore, the LORD brought upon them the princes of the host of the king of Assyria who took Manasseh and bound him with fetters of brass and carried him to Babylon.

⁵ ¶ Then rose up the heads of the families of Judah and of Benjamin and the priests and the Levites, of all those whose spirit God woke up to go up to build the house of the LORD which is in Jerusalem.

⁵ ¶ O Assyrian, rod and staff of my anger, in thy hand have I placed my indignation. ⁶ I will send him against a hypocritical nation, and upon the people of my wrath will I send him to take spoil and to take prey and to ready them that they might be tread down like the mire of the streets.

² Lift ye up a banner as an example upon the high mountain, exalt the voice unto them, raise the hand, that they may enter in by gates of princes. ³ I have commanded my sanctified ones; I have also called my mighty ones for my anger that they might rejoice with my glory. ⁴ The noise of a multitude in the mountains like as of a great people; a tumultuous noise of kingdoms, of Gentiles gathered together: the LORD of the hosts orders the host of the battle. ⁵ They come from a far land, from the end of the heavens, even the LORD, and the instruments of his indignation, to destroy the whole earth.

¹² Have the gods of the Gentiles delivered those whom my fathers have destroyed, as Gozan and Haran and Rezeph and the sons of Eden which were in Telassar?
