¹ ¶ And Jacob went on his way, and the angels of God met him. ² And when Jacob saw them, he said, This is God’s host; and he called the name of that place Mahanaim. ³ ¶ And Jacob sent messengers before him to Esau his brother unto the land of Seir, the country of Edom. ⁴ And he commanded them, saying, Thus shall ye speak unto my lord Esau: Thy slave Jacob saith thus, I have sojourned with Laban and stayed there until now; ⁵ and I have oxen and asses, flocks, and menslaves, and womenslaves; and I have sent to tell my lord, that I may find grace in thy sight. ⁶ And the messengers returned to Jacob, saying, We came to thy brother Esau, and also he comes to meet thee, and four hundred men with him. ⁷ Then Jacob was greatly afraid and distressed, and he divided the people that were with him, and the sheep and the cows and the camels, into two bands ⁸ and said, If Esau comes to the one company and smites it, then the other company which is left shall escape. ⁹ ¶ And Jacob said, O God of my father Abraham and God of my father Isaac, the LORD who said unto me, Return unto thy country and to thy kindred, and I will deal well with thee. ¹⁰ I am not worthy of the least of all the mercies and of all the truth which thou hast showed unto thy slave; for with my staff I passed over this Jordan and now I am become two bands. ¹¹ Deliver me, I pray thee, from the hand of my brother, from the hand of Esau, for I fear him lest he come and smite me and the mother with the children. ¹² And thou hast said, I will surely do thee good and make thy seed as the sand of the sea, which cannot be numbered for multitude. ¹³ ¶ And he lodged there that same night and took of that which came to his hand as a present for Esau his brother: ¹⁴ two hundred she goats and twenty he goats, two hundred sheep and twenty rams, ¹⁵ thirty milk camels with their colts, forty cows and ten bulls, twenty she asses, and ten foals. ¹⁶ And he delivered them into the hand of his slaves, every drove by themselves and said unto his slaves, Pass before me and put a space between drove and drove. ¹⁷ And he commanded the foremost, saying, When Esau, my brother, meets thee and asks thee, saying, Whose art thou? And where goest thou? And for whom are these before thee? ¹⁸ Then thou shalt say, They are thy slave Jacob’s; it is a present sent unto my lord Esau; and, behold, also he is behind us. ¹⁹ And so commanded he the second and the third and all that followed those droves, saying, On this manner shall ye speak unto Esau when ye find him. ²⁰ And ye shall also say, Behold, thy slave Jacob is behind us. For he said, I will reconcile his wrath with the present that goes before me, and afterward I will see his face; peradventure he will accept me. ²¹ So the present went over before him, and he lodged that night in the company. ²² And he rose up that night and took his two wives and his two womenservants and his eleven sons and passed over the ford Jabbok. ²³ And he took them and sent them over the brook and sent over all that he had. ²⁴ ¶ And Jacob was left alone, and a man wrestled with him until the breaking of the day. ²⁵ And when the man saw that he did not prevail against him, he touched the hollow of his thigh; and the hollow of Jacob’s thigh was disjointed as he wrestled with him. ²⁶ And he said, Let me go, for the day breaks. And he said, I will not let thee go except thou bless me. ²⁷ And he said unto him, What is thy name? And he said, Jacob. ²⁸ And he said, Thy name shall no longer be called Jacob, but Israel; for thou hast fought with God and with men, and hast prevailed. ²⁹ And Jacob asked him and said, Tell me, I pray thee, thy name. And he said, Why dost thou ask after my name? And he blessed him there. ³⁰ And Jacob called the name of the place Peniel; for I have seen God face to face, and my soul was saved. ³¹ And as he passed over Penuel, the sun rose upon him, and he limped upon his thigh. ³² Therefore the sons of Israel do not eat of the sinew which shrank, which is upon the hollow of the thigh, unto this day, because he touched the hollow of Jacob’s thigh in the sinew that shrank.

¹⁶ And he answered, Fear not; for those that are with us are more than those that are with them. ¹⁷ And Elisha prayed and said, LORD, I pray thee, open his eyes, that he may see. And the LORD opened the eyes of the young man, and he saw; and, behold, the mountain was full of horsemen and chariots of fire round about Elisha.

⁷ Zain The angel of the LORD encamps round about those that fear him and delivers them.

¹¹ For he shall give his angels charge over thee to keep thee in all thy ways.

²² whether Paul or Apollos or Cephas or the world or life or death or things present or things to come, all are yours;

¹⁰ To the intent that now unto the principalities and powers in heavenly places might be known by the congregation {Gr. ekklesia – called out ones} the manifold wisdom of God,

⁴ ¶ being made so much better than the angels, as he has by inheritance obtained a more excellent name than they.

¹⁴ And he said, No, but I am the Prince of the host of the LORD; now I am come. Then Joshua falling upon his face in the earth worshipped him and said unto him, What saith my lord unto his slave?

³⁸ And out of the tribe of Gad, Ramoth in Gilead with its suburbs, to be a city of refuge for manslayers; and Mahanaim with its suburbs,

⁸ ¶ But Abner, the son of Ner, captain of Saul’s host, took Ishbosheth, the son of Saul, and brought him over to Mahanaim

¹² And Abner, the son of Ner, and the slaves of Ishbosheth, the son of Saul, went out from Mahanaim to Gibeon.

²⁴ Then David came to Mahanaim. And Absalom passed the Jordan with all the men of Israel.

²⁶ So Israel pitched camp with Absalom in the land of Gilead. ²⁷ And it came to pass, when David arrived at Mahanaim, that Shobi, the son of Nahash of Rabbah of the sons of Ammon; and Machir, the son of Ammiel of Lodebar; and Barzillai, the Gileadite of Rogelim,

⁸ And, behold, thou hast with thee Shimei, the son of Gera, a Benjamite of Bahurim, who cursed me with a grievous curse in the day when I went to Mahanaim. But he came down to meet me at the Jordan, and I swore to him by the LORD, saying, I will not put thee to death with the sword.

¹⁴ Ahinadab, the son of Iddo, in Mahanaim;

¹⁷ And Elisha prayed and said, LORD, I pray thee, open his eyes, that he may see. And the LORD opened the eyes of the young man, and he saw; and, behold, the mountain was full of horsemen and chariots of fire round about Elisha.

²¹ Bless ye the LORD, all ye his hosts, ye ministers of his, that do his pleasure.

² Praise ye him, all his angels; praise ye him, all his hosts.

¹³ Return, return, O Shulamite; return, return, that we may look upon thee. What will ye see in the Shulamite? She shall be as a multitude of tabernacles.

²⁰ Then said he, Knowest thou why I have come unto thee? Because now I must return to fight with the prince of the Persians; and when I am gone forth, next the prince of Grecia shall come.

¹³ And suddenly there was with the angel a multitude of the heavenly host praising God and saying,

⁶ and the Horites in their Mount Seir unto the plain of Paran, which is by the wilderness.

³⁰ and Esau said to Jacob, Give me to eat, I pray thee, of that red pottage; for I am faint. Therefore was his name called Edom.

⁴¹ ¶ And Esau hated Jacob because of the blessing with which his father blessed him, and Esau said in his heart, The days of mourning for my father are at hand; then I will slay my brother Jacob. ⁴² And these words of Esau, her elder son, were told to Rebekah; and she sent and called Jacob her younger son and said unto him, Behold, thy brother Esau, as concerning thee, does comfort himself, purposing to kill thee.

¹⁴ Let my lord, I pray thee, pass before his slave; and I will lead on softly, according as the property that goes before me and the children are able to endure until I come unto my lord unto Seir.

¹⁶ ¶ So Esau returned that day on his way unto Seir.

⁶ And Esau took his wives and his sons and his daughters and all the persons of his house and his cattle and all his beasts and all his substance, which he had got in the land of Canaan, and went into another country from the face of his brother Jacob. ⁷ For their riches were more than that they might dwell together, and the land in which they were strangers could not bear them because of their livestock. ⁸ Thus dwelt Esau in Mount Seir; Esau is Edom. ⁹ ¶ And these are the lineages of Esau, the father of the Edomites in Mount Seir.

⁵ do not seek a fight with them; for I will not give you of their land, no, not so much as a foot breadth because I have given Mount Seir unto Esau for an inheritance.

²² as he did to the sons of Esau who dwelt in Seir when he destroyed the Horims from before them; and they inherited from them and dwelt in their stead even unto this day.

⁴ And to Isaac I gave Jacob and Esau, and to Esau I gave Mount Seir to possess it; but Jacob and his sons went down into Egypt.

¹ ¶ Behold, I send my messenger, and he shall prepare the way before me; and the Lord, whom ye seek, shall suddenly come to his temple, and the angel of the covenant, whom ye desire: behold, he comes, said the LORD of the hosts.

⁵² and sent messengers before his face; and they went and entered into a village of the Samaritans to make ready for him.

³¹ Or what king going to make war against another king does not sit down first and consult whether he is able with ten thousand to meet him that comes against him with twenty thousand? ³² Or else, while the other is yet a great way off, he sends an embassy and desires conditions of peace.

⁷ If thou doest good, it shall certainly be accepted; and if thou doest not good, sin lies at the door. And his desire shall be unto thee, but thou must rule over him.

⁶ Hear us, my lord; thou art a prince of God among us; in the best of our sepulchres bury thy dead; none of us shall withhold from thee his sepulchre so that thou may bury thy dead.

²⁹ Let the peoples serve thee and nations bow down to thee; be lord over thy brethren, and let thy mother’s sons bow down to thee; cursed be every one that curses thee, and blessed be he that blesses thee.

³⁷ And Isaac answered and said unto Esau, Behold, I have made him thy lord, and all his brethren I have given to him for slaves, and with wheat and new wine I have sustained him. What shall I do now unto thee, my son?

⁵ and I have oxen and asses, flocks, and menslaves, and womenslaves; and I have sent to tell my lord, that I may find grace in thy sight.

¹⁸ Then thou shalt say, They are thy slave Jacob’s; it is a present sent unto my lord Esau; and, behold, also he is behind us.

⁸ And he said, What meanest thou by all these droves which I met? And he said, To find grace in the sight of my lord.

²² And Aaron answered, Let not the anger of my lord wax hot; thou knowest the people that they are inclined to evil.

¹⁷ And Saul knew David’s voice and said, Is this thy voice, my son David? And David said, It is my voice, my lord, O king.

³² So they girded sackcloth on their loins and put ropes on their heads and came to the king of Israel and said, Thy slave Benhadad saith, I pray thee, let me live. And he replied, If he is yet alive, he is my brother.

³ Do this now, my son, and deliver thyself, for thou hast fallen into the hand of thy friend; go, humble thyself, and make sure thy friend.

¹ ¶ A soft answer turns away wrath, but grievous words stir up anger.

⁴ ¶ If the spirit of the ruler rises up against thee, do not leave thy place; for meekness pacifies great sins.

¹¹ For whosoever exalts himself shall be abased, and he that humbles himself shall be exalted.

⁶ as Sara obeyed Abraham, calling him lord, of whom ye are made daughters, doing well and not being afraid of any terror.

⁴³ And the man increased exceedingly, and had many sheep, and maidslaves and menslaves, and camels, and asses.

¹⁶ For all the riches which God has taken from our father, is ours and our son’s; now then, whatever God has said unto thee, do.

¹¹ Take, I pray thee, my blessing that is brought to thee because God has dealt graciously with me, and all that is here is mine. And he urged him, and he took it.

¹⁵ And Esau said, Let me now leave with thee some of the folk that are with me. And he said, What for? Let me find grace in the sight of my lord.

²⁵ And they said, Thou hast saved our lives; let us find grace in the sight of my lord that we might be Pharaoh’s slaves.

² And Ruth, the Moabitess, said unto Naomi, Let me now go to the field and glean ears of grain after him in whose sight I shall find grace. And she said unto her, Go, my daughter.

¹⁸ And she said, Let thy handmaid find grace in thy sight. So the woman went her way, and ate, and her countenance was no longer sad.

⁴ Then the king said to Ziba, Behold, thine are all that pertained unto Mephibosheth. And Ziba bowed down and said, Let me find grace in thy sight, my lord, O king.

²² ¶ Did I say, Bring unto me and pay for me out of your substance

⁴⁰ and by thy sword shalt thou live and shalt serve thy brother; yet there shall be a time when thou shalt have dominion, and thou shalt break his yoke from off thy neck. ⁴¹ ¶ And Esau hated Jacob because of the blessing with which his father blessed him, and Esau said in his heart, The days of mourning for my father are at hand; then I will slay my brother Jacob.

⁸ and said, If Esau comes to the one company and smites it, then the other company which is left shall escape.

¹¹ Deliver me, I pray thee, from the hand of my brother, from the hand of Esau, for I fear him lest he come and smite me and the mother with the children.

¹ ¶ And Jacob lifted up his eyes, and saw, and, behold, Esau came and with him four hundred men. And he divided the children unto Leah and unto Rachel and unto the two handmaids.

¹⁹ As if a man fled from a lion, and a bear met him; or went into the house, and leaned his hand on the wall and a serpent bit him.

³ And let us arise and go up to Bethel and I will make there an altar unto God, who answered me in the day of my distress, and has been with me in the way which I have gone.

¹⁰ ¶ And when Pharaoh drew near, the sons of Israel lifted up their eyes, and, behold, the Egyptians marched after them; and they feared greatly, and the sons of Israel cried out unto the LORD.

⁴ The pain of death compassed me, and the rivers of Belial made me afraid. ⁵ The pain of Sheol compassed me about: the snares of death came before me.

¹³ For I have heard the slander of many; fear was on every side; while they took counsel together against me, they devised to take away my life.

⁴ My heart is sore pained within me, and the terrors of death are fallen upon me. ⁵ Fearfulness and trembling are come upon me, and horror has overwhelmed me.

² From the end of the earth I will cry unto thee when my heart is overwhelmed; lead me to the rock that is higher than I.

⁶ Then they cried unto the LORD in their trouble, and he delivered them out of their distresses.

⁵ Teth A good man has mercy and lends; Jod He will govern his affairs with good judgment.

⁴ ¶ I looked on my right hand, and beheld, but there was no one that would know me; I had no refuge; no one cared for my soul.

¹¹ discretion shall preserve thee, intelligence shall keep thee

²⁶ For his God teaches him to know how to judge and instructs him.

²⁶ And he said unto them, Why are ye fearful, O ye of little faith? Then, awake, he rebuked the winds and the sea; and there was a great calm.

¹⁶ ¶ Behold, I send you forth as sheep in the midst of wolves; be ye therefore prudent as serpents and innocent as doves.

³³ These things I have spoken unto you that in me ye might have peace. In the world ye shall have tribulation; but be of good cheer; I have overcome the world.

²² confirming the souls of the disciples and exhorting them to remain in the faith, and that we must through much tribulation enter into the kingdom of God.

⁴ who comforts us in all our tribulation, that we may be able to comfort those who are in any trouble with the comfort with which we ourselves are comforted by God.

⁸ Because, brothers, we would not have you ignore our tribulation which was done unto us in Asia, that we were burdened beyond our strength, in such a manner that we despaired even of life: ⁹ But we had the sentence of death in ourselves that we should not trust in ourselves, but in God who raises the dead; ¹⁰ who delivered us from so great a death and does deliver; in whom we trust that he will yet deliver us;

¹² And all that desire to live godly in Christ Jesus shall also suffer persecution.

¹ ¶ And Jacob lifted up his eyes, and saw, and, behold, Esau came and with him four hundred men. And he divided the children unto Leah and unto Rachel and unto the two handmaids. ² And he put the handmaids and their children in front, and Leah and her children next, and Rachel and Joseph last. ³ And he passed over in front of them and bowed himself to the ground seven times until he came near to his brother.

⁷ ¶ And I will establish my covenant between me and thee and thy seed after thee in their generations for an everlasting covenant, to be a God unto thee and to thy seed after thee.

¹³ And, behold, the LORD stood above it and said, I AM the God of Abraham, thy father, and the God of Isaac; the land upon which thou dost lie, to thee will I give it and to thy seed;

³ Also the LORD said unto Jacob, Return unto the land of thy fathers and to thy kindred; and I will be with thee.

¹³ I am the God of Bethel, where thou didst anoint the pillar and where thou didst vow a vow unto me. Now arise, go out from this land and return unto the land of thy nature.

²⁹ It is in the power of my hand to do you hurt, but the God of your father spoke unto me last night, saying, Take thou heed that thou speak not to Jacob either good or bad.

⁴² If the God of my father, the God of Abraham, and the fear of Isaac, were not with me, surely thou would send me away now empty. God has seen my affliction and the work of my hands and rebuked thee last night.

⁵³ The God of Abraham and the God of Nahor, the God of their fathers, judge between us. And Jacob swore by the fear of his father Isaac.

⁶ Moreover he said, I am the God of thy father, the God of Abraham, the God of Isaac, and the God of Jacob. Then Moses covered his face, for he was afraid to look upon God.

⁶ And David was greatly distressed, for the people spoke of stoning him because the soul of all the people was bitter, each one for his sons and for his daughters; but David encouraged himself in the LORD his God.

⁶ and said, O LORD God of our fathers, art not thou God in the heavens and dost thou not rule in all the kingdoms of the Gentiles? Is there not power and might in thy hand so that no one is able to withstand thee?

¹² O our God, wilt thou not judge them? For we have no might against this great company that comes against us; we do not know what to do; but our eyes are fixed upon thee.

²⁰ And for this cause Hezekiah, the king, and the prophet Isaiah, the son of Amoz, prayed and cried to heaven.

⁴ Daleth I sought the LORD, and he heard me and delivered me from all my fears. ⁵ He They looked unto him and were lightened, and their faces were not ashamed. ⁶ Vau This poor man cried out, and the LORD heard him and saved him out of all his troubles.

¹⁵ and call upon me in the day of trouble: I will deliver thee, and thou shalt glorify me.

¹⁵ He shall call upon me, and I will answer him; I will be with him in trouble; I will deliver him and glorify him.

⁶ Be anxious for nothing, but in every thing by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving, let your requests be made known unto God. ⁷ And the peace of God, which passes all understanding, shall keep your hearts and minds through Christ Jesus.

²⁷ And Abraham answered and said, Behold now, I have taken upon me to speak unto the Lord, who am but dust and ashes;

²⁷ And he said, Blessed be the LORD, God of my master Abraham, who has not lifted his mercy and his truth from my master, the LORD leading me in the way to the house of my master’s brethren.

¹⁰ ¶ And Jacob went out from Beersheba and went toward Haran. ¹¹ And he found a certain place and slept there all night because the sun was set; and he took of the stones of that place and put them for his pillows and lay down in that place to sleep.

¹⁵ And, behold, I am with thee and will keep thee in all places where thou goest and will bring thee again into this land; for I will not leave thee until I have done that which I have spoken to thee of.

¹⁸ But thou shalt remember the LORD thy God, for it is he that gives thee the power to get wealth that he may confirm his covenant which he swore unto thy fathers, as it is this day.

¹⁸ ¶ Then King David went in and sat before the LORD, and he said, O Lord GOD, Who am I and what is my house that thou hast brought me thus far?

⁷ In such a way that thy beginning would have been small, in comparison to the great increase of thy latter.

⁹ The righteous shall hold on to his way, and he that has clean hands shall be stronger and stronger.

⁵ With my ears I had heard thee; but now my eyes see thee. ⁶ Therefore, I abhor myself and repent in dust and ashes.

⁵ For thou hast made him a little lower than the angels and hast crowned him with glory and beauty.

² I said unto the LORD, Thou art my goodness: I have no goodness apart from thee;

³⁵ In the same manner thou hast also given me the shield of thy salvation: and thy right hand will hold me up, and thy meekness shall multiply me.

⁷ He shall abide before God for ever; He is aware of mercy and truth which preserve him.

⁷ They go forth in a great multitude; and in order, they shall see God in Zion.

¹⁰ Mercy and truth are met together; righteousness and peace have kissed each other.

¹⁸ But the path of the just is as the light of the morning star, that shines more and more until the day is perfect.

⁵ ¶ Then I said, Woe is me! for I am dead because I am a man of unclean lips, and I dwell in the midst of a people of unclean lips; for mine eyes have seen the King, the LORD of the hosts.

⁷ ¶ I will mention the mercies of the LORD and the praises of the LORD according to all that the LORD has bestowed on us and the greatness of his goodness toward the house of Israel, which he has bestowed on them according to his mercies and according to the multitude of his mercies.

⁸ O Lord, to us belongs confusion of face, to our kings, to our princes, and to our fathers, because we have sinned against thee. ⁹ Of the Lord our God is the ability to have mercy and to forgive, even though we have rebelled against him

²⁰ Thou wilt perform the truth to Jacob and the mercy to Abraham, which thou hast sworn unto our fathers from the times of old.

⁸ When Simon Peter saw it, he fell down on his knees before Jesus, saying, Depart from me, Lord, for I am a sinful man.

¹⁰ So likewise ye, when ye shall have done all those things which are commanded you, say, We are unprofitable slaves: we have done that which was our duty to do.

¹¹ ¶ I have been a fool, glorying; ye have compelled me; for I ought to have been commended of you, for in nothing am I behind the grandiose apostles, though I am nothing.

¹² ¶ And I thank Christ Jesus our Lord, who has enabled me, for he counted me faithful, putting me into the ministry, ¹³ who was before a blasphemer and a persecutor and injurious, but I was received unto mercy because I did it ignorantly in unbelief. ¹⁴ And the grace of our Lord was exceedingly abundant with faith and love which is in Christ Jesus. ¹⁵ This is a faithful saying and worthy of acceptation by all, that Christ Jesus came into the world to save sinners, of whom I am first.

⁵ ¶ Likewise, young people, be subject to the elders in such a manner that you are all subject to one another. Be clothed with humility of will, for God resists the proud and gives grace to the humble.

⁸ ¶ If we say that we have no sin, we deceive ourselves, and there is no truth in us. ⁹ If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness. ¹⁰ If we say that we have not sinned, we make him a liar, and his word is not in us.

⁴¹ ¶ And Esau hated Jacob because of the blessing with which his father blessed him, and Esau said in his heart, The days of mourning for my father are at hand; then I will slay my brother Jacob.

⁶ If a bird’s nest is encountered before thee in the way in any tree or on the ground, with young ones or eggs, and the mother sitting upon the young or upon the eggs, thou shalt not take the mother with the young.

¹⁰ And they cried unto the LORD and said, We have sinned because we have forsaken the LORD and have served the Baalim and Ashtaroth, but now deliver us out of the hand of our enemies, and we will serve thee.

¹⁵ The LORD, therefore, shall judge, and he shall judge between me and thee. Let him see and plead my cause, and defend me from thy hand.

¹ Michtam of David. ¶ Preserve me, O God: for in thee I have put my trust.

²⁰ Schin O keep my soul and deliver me; let me not be ashamed, for I put my trust in thee.

² Incline thine ear unto me; deliver me speedily; be thou my strong rock, for a house of defence to save me.

¹ ¶ Judge me, O God, and plead my cause against those who are not merciful; O deliver me from the deceitful and unjust man.

Do not destroy, Michtam of David; when Saul sent, and they watched the house to kill him. ¶ Deliver me from my enemies, O my God; defend me from those that rise up against me. ² Deliver me from the workers of iniquity and save me from bloodthirsty men.

¹³⁴ ¶ Ransom me from the violence of men, and I will keep thy precepts.

⁶ Attend unto my cry, for I am brought very low; deliver me from my persecutors; for they are stronger than I.

¹⁹ ¶ A brother offended is harder to be won than a strong city, and their contentions are like the bars of a castle.

¹⁷ Behold, our God whom we serve is able to deliver us from the burning fiery furnace, and he will deliver us out of thine hand, O king.

¹⁴ Therefore, in thy peoples a tumult shall arise, and all thy fortresses shall be destroyed, as Shalman destroyed Betharbel in the day of battle: the mother was dashed in pieces upon her sons.

¹³ And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil, for thine is the kingdom and the power and the glory forever. Amen.

¹⁷ that in blessing I will bless thee and in multiplying I will multiply thy seed as the stars of the heaven and as the sand which is upon the sea shore; and thy seed shall possess the gates of his enemies;

¹³ And, behold, the LORD stood above it and said, I AM the God of Abraham, thy father, and the God of Isaac; the land upon which thou dost lie, to thee will I give it and to thy seed; ¹⁴ and thy seed shall be as the dust of the earth, and thou shalt multiply to the west and to the east and to the Aquilon and to the Negev; and in thee and in thy seed shall all the families of the earth be blessed. ¹⁵ And, behold, I am with thee and will keep thee in all places where thou goest and will bring thee again into this land; for I will not leave thee until I have done that which I have spoken to thee of.

⁶ And the messengers returned to Jacob, saying, We came to thy brother Esau, and also he comes to meet thee, and four hundred men with him.

³ And he said, I am the God, the God of thy father; fear not to go down into Egypt; for there I will make of thee a great people. ⁴ I will go down with thee into Egypt; and I will also surely bring thee up again; and Joseph shall put his hand upon thine eyes.

¹³ Remember Abraham, Isaac, and Israel, thy slaves, to whom thou didst sware by thine own self and hast said unto them, I will multiply your seed as the stars of heaven, and all this land that I have spoken of will I give unto your seed, and they shall take it for inheritance for ever.

¹⁹ God is not a man, that he should lie; neither the son of man, that he should repent; he said and shall he not do it? He spoke and shall he not execute it?

²⁹ And also the Overcomer of Israel will not lie nor repent concerning this, for he is not a man, that he should repent.

³⁵ The heaven and the earth shall pass away, but my words shall not pass away.

¹³ if we are unfaithful, yet he remains faithful; he cannot deny himself.

² for the hope of eternal life, which God, who cannot lie, promised before the times of the ages

¹⁷ In which God, desiring to show more abundantly unto the heirs of promise the immutability of his counsel, confirmed it by an oath,

² and he lifted up his eyes and looked, and, behold, three men stood by him; and when he saw them, he ran to meet them from the tent door and bowed himself toward the ground

²⁰ And ye shall also say, Behold, thy slave Jacob is behind us. For he said, I will reconcile his wrath with the present that goes before me, and afterward I will see his face; peradventure he will accept me. ²¹ So the present went over before him, and he lodged that night in the company.

¹⁰ And Jacob said, No, I pray thee, if now I have found grace in thy sight, then receive my present from my hand, that for this I have seen thy face as though I had seen the face of God; and do me the pleasure.

⁶ And Joseph was the lord over the land, and he it was that sold the wheat to all the people of the land; and Joseph’s brethren came and bowed down themselves before him with their faces to the earth.

¹¹ ¶ Then their father Israel answered them, If it must be so now, do this: take of the best fruits of the land in your vessels and take the man a present, a little balm, and a little honey, aromas, and myrrh, nuts, and almonds.

²⁶ ¶ And when Joseph came home, they brought him the present which they had in their hand in the house and bowed themselves to him to the earth.

⁸ Ask thy slaves, and they will tell thee. Therefore, let the young men find grace in thine eyes, for we come in a good day; give, I pray thee, whatever is in thy hand unto thy slaves and to thy son David.

²⁷ And now this blessing which thy handmaid has brought unto my lord, let it be given unto the servants that follow my lord.

⁸ ¶ A bribe is as a precious stone in the eyes of him that has it; wherever it turns, it prospers.

¹⁶ ¶ A man’s gift makes room for him and brings him before great men.

⁶ ¶ Many will intreat the favour of the prince, but every man is a friend to him that gives.

¹⁴ ¶ A gift in secret pacifies anger, and a bribe in the bosom strong wrath.

⁹ Thus God has taken away the livestock of your father and given them to me.

² ¶ And there was a man in Maon whose possessions were in Carmel, and the man was very great, and he had three thousand sheep and a thousand goats, and he was shearing his sheep in Carmel.

³ His substance was seven thousand sheep, three thousand camels, five hundred yoke of oxen, five hundred she asses, and a very great store of servants, so that this man was the greatest of all the men of the east.

¹² So the LORD blessed the latter end of Job more than his beginning; for he had fourteen thousand sheep and six thousand camels and a thousand yoke of oxen and a thousand she asses.

²⁰ And ye shall also say, Behold, thy slave Jacob is behind us. For he said, I will reconcile his wrath with the present that goes before me, and afterward I will see his face; peradventure he will accept me.

⁸ And he said, What meanest thou by all these droves which I met? And he said, To find grace in the sight of my lord. ⁹ And Esau said, I have enough, my brother; keep what thou hast unto thyself.

³ And he passed over in front of them and bowed himself to the ground seven times until he came near to his brother.

⁴ And he commanded them, saying, Thus shall ye speak unto my lord Esau: Thy slave Jacob saith thus, I have sojourned with Laban and stayed there until now; ⁵ and I have oxen and asses, flocks, and menslaves, and womenslaves; and I have sent to tell my lord, that I may find grace in thy sight.

⁵ Therefore, ye shall make images of your hemorrhoids and images of your rats that destroy the land, and ye shall give glory unto the God of Israel; peradventure he will lighten his hand from off you and from off your gods and from off your land.

¹⁷ Now, therefore, know and consider what thou must do, for evil is determined against our master and against all his household, for he is such a son of Belial that no one can speak to him. ¹⁸ ¶ Then Abigail made haste and took two hundred loaves and two bottles of wine and five sheep ready dressed and five measures of parched flour and one hundred bunches of raisins and two hundred cakes of figs and laid them on asses. ¹⁹ And she said unto her servants, Go on before me; behold, I come after you. But she told nothing to her husband Nabal. ²⁰ And it was so as she rode on the ass that she came down a secret part of the mountain, and, behold, David and his men came down against her, and she met them. ²¹ Now David had said, Surely in vain have I kept all that this fellow has in the wilderness so that nothing was missed of all that pertained unto him, and he has returned unto me evil for good. ²² Let God do so and more also unto the enemies of David if I leave of all that pertain to him by the morning light any that piss against the wall. ²³ And when Abigail saw David, she hastened and lighted off the ass and fell before David on her face and bowed herself to the ground ²⁴ and fell at his feet and said, Upon me, my lord, upon me let this iniquity be, and let thy handmaid, I pray thee, speak in thy audience; and hear the words of thy handmaid. ²⁵ Let not my lord, I pray thee, take to heart this man of Belial, even Nabal, for as his name is, so is he; Nabal {Heb. fool} is his name, and folly is with him; but I, thy handmaid, did not see the servants of my lord whom thou didst send. ²⁶ Now, therefore, my lord, as the LORD lives and as thy soul lives, seeing the LORD has withheld thee from coming to shed blood and from avenging thyself with thy own hand, now let thy enemies and those that seek evil to my lord be as Nabal. ²⁷ And now this blessing which thy handmaid has brought unto my lord, let it be given unto the servants that follow my lord. ²⁸ I pray thee, forgive the trespass of thy handmaid, for the LORD will certainly make my lord a sure house because my lord fights the battles of the LORD, and evil has not been found in thee all thy days. ²⁹ Yet a man is risen to pursue thee and to seek thy soul, but the soul of my lord shall be bound in the bundle of life with the LORD thy God, and he shall hurl forth the souls of thine enemies as out of the middle of a sling. ³⁰ And it shall come to pass when the LORD shall have done to my lord according to all the good that he has spoken concerning thee and shall have appointed thee ruler over Israel, ³¹ that this shall be no stumblingblock unto thee nor grief of heart unto my lord, either that thou hast shed blood causeless or that my lord has avenged himself; but when the LORD shall have dealt well with my lord, then remember thy handmaid. ³² ¶ Then David said to Abigail, Blessed be the LORD God of Israel who sent thee this day to meet me; ³³ and blessed be thy advice, and blessed be thou who hast kept me this day from coming to shed blood and from avenging myself with my own hand. ³⁴ For in very deed as the LORD God of Israel lives, who has kept me back from hurting thee, except thou hadst hastened and come to meet me, surely there had not been left unto Nabal by the morning light any that piss against the wall. ³⁵ So David received of her hand that which she had brought him and said unto her, Go up in peace to thy house; see, I have hearkened to thy voice and have accepted thy person.

³¹ ¶ Then his slaves said unto him, Behold now, we have heard that the kings of the house of Israel are merciful kings; let us, I pray thee, put sackcloth on our loins and ropes upon our heads and go out to the king of Israel; peradventure he will give thee thy life.

⁸ Therefore, take unto you now seven bullocks and seven rams, and go to my slave Job, and offer up for yourselves a burnt offering; and my slave Job shall pray for you; for only because I will accept him, I shall not deal with you according to your folly, in that ye have not spoken by me in uprightness, like my slave Job. ⁹ So Eliphaz, the Temanite, and Bildad, the Shuhite, and Zophar, the Naamathite, went, and did according as the LORD commanded them; and the LORD accepted Job.

³⁵ He will not regard any ransom; neither will he want to forgive, though thou givest many bribes.

¹⁸ ¶ A wrathful man stirs up strife, but he that is slow to anger appeases strife.

¹⁴ ¶ The wrath of the king is as a messenger of death, but the wise man will avoid it.

⁹ Who can tell if God will turn and repent and turn away from his fierce anger, that we not perish?

²⁵ that with meekness they might teach those that resist, if God peradventure will grant unto them that they might repent and know the truth,

²¹ And Jacob said unto Laban, Give me my wife, for my days are fulfilled that I may go in unto her. ²² So Laban gathered together all the men of the place and made a banquet. ²³ And it came to pass in the evening that he took Leah, his daughter, and brought her to him, and he went in unto her. ²⁴ And Laban gave unto his daughter Leah Zilpah, his maid, for a handmaid.

²¹ And afterwards she gave birth to a daughter and called her name Dinah. ²² And God remembered Rachel and God hearkened to her and opened her womb. ²³ And she conceived and gave birth to a son and said, God has taken away my reproach; ²⁴ and she called his name Joseph, saying, Let the LORD add unto me another son.

¹⁸ And it came to pass as her soul was departing, (for she died) that she called his name Benoni, but his father called him Benjamin.

²² And it came to pass when Israel dwelt in that land, that Reuben went and lay with Bilhah, his father’s concubine, and Israel heard of it. Now the sons of Jacob were twelve: ²³ The sons of Leah: Reuben, Jacob’s firstborn, Simeon, Levi, Judah, Issachar, and Zebulun. ²⁴ The sons of Rachel: Joseph and Benjamin. ²⁵ And the sons of Bilhah, Rachel’s handmaid: Dan and Naphtali. ²⁶ And the sons of Zilpah, Leah’s handmaid: Gad and Asher. These are the sons of Jacob, who were born to him in Padanaram.

³⁷ Only unto the land of the sons of Ammon thou camest not, nor unto any place of the river Jabbok, nor unto the cities in the mountains, nor unto any place that the LORD our God forbade us.

¹⁶ And unto the Reubenites and unto the Gadites I gave from Gilead even unto the river Arnon, half the valley for a border even unto the river Jabbok, which is the border of the sons of Ammon,

² Sihon, king of the Amorites, who dwelt in Heshbon, and ruled from Aroer, which is upon the bank of the river Arnon, and from the midst of the river and from half of Gilead, even unto the river Jabbok, which is the border of the sons of Ammon,

⁸ But if any provide not for his own and specially for those of his own house, he has denied the faith and is worse than an unbeliever.

⁸ And Rachel said, With great wrestlings I have wrestled with my sister, and I have prevailed; and she called his name Naphtali.

²⁸ And he said, Thy name shall no longer be called Jacob, but Israel; for thou hast fought with God and with men, and hast prevailed.

³⁰ And Jacob called the name of the place Peniel; for I have seen God face to face, and my soul was saved.

¹⁶ the Angel who frees me from all evil, bless these young men, and let my name be named on them, and the name of my fathers Abraham and Isaac; and let them grow into a multitude in the midst of the earth.

²⁷ And Moses stretched forth his hand over the sea, and the sea returned in its strength when the morning appeared; and the Egyptians fled against it; and the LORD overthrew the Egyptians in the midst of the sea.

¹⁷ Until the day breaks and the shadows flee away, return, my beloved, and be thou like a roe or a young hart upon the mountains of Bether.

² And that man shall be as a hiding place from the wind, and a covert from the tempest; as rivers of water in a dry place, as the shadow of a great rock in a hot land.

³ He took his brother by the heel in the womb, and with his strength he overcame the angel; ⁴ yea, he dominated the angel and prevailed; he wept and made supplication unto him; he found him in Bethel, and there he spoke with us; ⁵ but the LORD is God of the hosts; the LORD is his memorial.

²⁴ Strive to enter in at the narrow gate; for many, I say unto you, will seek to enter in and shall not be able.

⁴⁴ And being in agony, he prayed more earnestly; and his sweat was as it were great drops of blood falling down to the ground.

²⁶ ¶ And likewise also the Spirit helps our weakness; for we know not how to pray as we ought, but the Spirit itself makes entreaty for us with groanings which cannot be uttered. ²⁷ But he that searches the hearts knows what is the desire of the Spirit, that according to the will of God, he makes entreaty for the saints.

³⁰ ¶ But I beseech you, brethren, by our Lord Jesus Christ, and by the charity of the Spirit, that ye help me with prayers to God for me,

⁴⁷ The first man is of the earth, earthy; the second man is the Lord of heaven.

¹² For we wrestle not against flesh and blood, but against principalities, against powers, against the lords of this age, rulers of this darkness, against spiritual wickedness in the heavens.

¹⁸ praying always with all prayer and supplication in the Spirit and watching in this with all perseverance and supplication for all the saints

¹ ¶ For I would that ye knew what great conflict I have for you and for those at Laodicea and for as many as have not seen my face in the flesh,

¹² Epaphras, who is one of you, a slave of Christ, salutes you, always labouring fervently for you in prayers, that ye may stand firm, perfect and fulfilled in all the will of God.

⁷ Who in the days of his flesh, when he had offered up prayers and supplications with strong crying and tears unto him that was able to save him from death, was heard because of his reverent fear;

²² Make thee haste, escape there; for I cannot do anything until thou hast arrived there. Therefore the name of the city was called Zoar.

³² Therefore the sons of Israel do not eat of the sinew which shrank, which is upon the hollow of the thigh, unto this day, because he touched the hollow of Jacob’s thigh in the sinew that shrank.

¹³ And Moses said unto the LORD, Then the Egyptians shall hear it, for thou didst bring this people out of the midst of them with thy might; ¹⁴ and the inhabitants of this land will say, for they have already heard that thou, oh LORD, wast among this people, that thou, O LORD, art seen face to face, and that thy cloud was over them, and that thou didst go before them by day time in a pillar of a cloud and in a pillar of fire by night;

⁶ ¶ And in my prosperity I said, I shall never be moved. ⁷ LORD, by thy favour thou hast made my mountain to stand strong; thou didst hide thy face, and I was troubled.

¹⁴ Fear not, thou worm Jacob, ye dead of Israel; I will help thee, saith the LORD and thy Redeemer, the Holy One of Israel.

¹¹ ¶ Thus saith the LORD, the Holy One of Israel, and his Maker, Ask me of things to come; inquire of me concerning my sons and concerning the work of my hands.

²² And, behold, a woman of Canaan having come out of the same borders cried unto him, saying, Lord, Son of David, have mercy on me; my daughter is sick, possessed by a demon. ²³ But he answered her not a word. And his disciples came and besought him, saying, Send her away, for she cries out after us. ²⁴ But he answered and said, I am not sent but unto the lost sheep of the house of Israel. ²⁵ Then she came and worshipped him, saying, Lord, help me. ²⁶ But he answered and said, It is not good to take the children’s bread and to cast it to the little dogs. ²⁷ And she said, Yes, Lord, yet the little dogs eat of the crumbs which fall from their masters’ table. ²⁸ Then Jesus answered and said unto her, O woman, great is thy faith; be it unto thee even as thou desire. And her daughter was made whole from that very hour.

⁴¹ Watch and pray, that ye enter not into temptation; the spirit indeed is willing, but the flesh is weak.

⁴⁴ And leaving them, he went away again and prayed the third time, saying the same words.

⁵ And he said unto them, Which of you shall have a friend and shall go unto him at midnight and say unto him, Friend, lend me three loaves; ⁶ for a friend of mine in his journey is come to me, and I have nothing to set before him? ⁷ And he from within shall answer and say, Trouble me not; the door is now shut, and my children are with me in bed; I cannot rise and give thee. ⁸ I say unto you, Though he will not rise and give him because he is his friend, yet because of his importunity, he will rise and give him as many as he needs.

⁷ And lest the greatness of the revelations should exalt me above measure, there is given to me a thorn in the flesh, a messenger of Satan to buffet me, lest I should be exalted above measure. ⁸ For this thing I besought the Lord three times that it might be taken from me. ⁹ And he said unto me, My grace is sufficient for thee; for my strength is made perfect in weakness. Most gladly, therefore, I will rather glory in my weaknesses that the power of Christ may dwell in me.

¹⁰ Now therefore let me alone that my wrath may wax hot in them and consume them; and I will put thee over a great nation.

¹⁴ Let me alone that I may destroy them and blot out their name from under heaven; and I will make of thee a nation mightier and greater than they.

¹⁰ And Jabez called on the God of Israel, saying, Oh that thou would bless me indeed and enlarge my border and that thy hand might be with me and that thou would deliver me from evil, that it may not grieve me! And God granted him that which he requested.

⁶ Then shall the earth bring forth her fruit, and God, even our own God, shall bless us. ⁷ God shall bless us, and all the ends of the earth shall fear him.

¹² The LORD has been mindful of us: he will bless us; he will greatly bless the house of Israel; he will bless the house of Aaron. ¹³ He will bless those that fear the LORD, both small and great.

⁴ It was but a little that I passed from them that I found him whom my soul loves: I held him and would not let him go until I had brought him into my mother’s house and into the chamber of her that brought me into the light.

⁵ Thine head upon thee is like scarlet, and the hair of thine head like the purple of the king hung in the galleries.

¹ ¶ And he spoke a parable unto them to this end, that it behooves us always to pray and not faint, ² saying, There was in a city a judge who did not fear God nor regard man; ³ and there was a widow in that city, and she came unto him, saying, Defend me from my adversary. ⁴ And he would not for a while, but afterward he said within himself, Though I do not fear God, nor regard man, ⁵ yet because this widow troubles me, I will do her justice, lest by her continual coming she weary me. ⁶ And the Lord said, Hear what the unjust judge says. ⁷ And shall not God avenge his own elect who cry day and night unto him though he bears long regarding them?

²⁸ And they drew near unto the village where they went, and he made as though he would have gone further. ²⁹ But they constrained him, saying, Abide with us, for it is toward evening, and the day is far spent. And he went in to tarry with them.

³⁷ Nevertheless, in all these things we are more than conquerors through him that loved us.

⁵⁸ ¶ Therefore, my beloved brothers, be ye steadfast, unmovable, always abounding in the work of the Lord, forasmuch as ye know that your labour is not in vain in the Lord.

⁵ Neither shall thy name any longer be called Abram, but thy name shall be Abraham; for a father of many Gentiles have I made thee.

¹⁵ ¶ And God said unto Abraham, As for Sarai thy wife, thou shalt not call her name Sarai, but Sarah shall her name be.

³¹ And Jacob said, Sell me this day thy birthright.

³³ Then Isaac trembled very exceedingly and said, Who is he that has taken venison and brought it to me, and I have eaten of all before thou camest? I have blessed him and he shall be blessed. ³⁴ And when Esau heard the words of his father, he cried with a great and exceeding bitter cry and said unto his father, Bless me, even me also, O my father. ³⁵ And he said, Thy brother came with deceit and has taken away thy blessing. ³⁶ And he said, Is he not rightly named Jacob? For he has supplanted me these two times; he took away my birthright, and, behold, now he has taken away my blessing. And he said, Hast thou not reserved a blessing for me?

²⁴ And God came to Laban the Aramean in dreams by night, and said unto him, Take heed that thou speak not to Jacob either good or bad.

³⁶ ¶ Then Jacob was wroth and contended with Laban, and Jacob answered and said to Laban, What is my trespass? What is my sin that thou hast so hotly pursued after me? ³⁷ Whereas thou hast searched all my stuff, what hast thou found of all thy household stuff? Set it here before my brethren and thy brethren that they may judge between us both. ³⁸ These twenty years I have been with thee; thy ewes and thy she goats have not aborted their young, and I have not eaten the rams of thy flock. ³⁹ That which was torn of beasts I did not bring unto thee; I bore the sin; thou didst require of my hand that which was stolen, whether by day or by night. ⁴⁰ By day the drought consumed me, and by night, the frost; and my sleep departed from mine eyes. ⁴¹ Thus have I been twenty years in thy house; I served thee fourteen years for thy two daughters and six years for thy flock; and thou hast changed my wages ten times. ⁴² If the God of my father, the God of Abraham, and the fear of Isaac, were not with me, surely thou would send me away now empty. God has seen my affliction and the work of my hands and rebuked thee last night. ⁴³ ¶ And Laban answered and said unto Jacob, These daughters are my daughters, and these sons are my sons, and these sheep are my sheep, and all that thou seest is mine; and what can I do this day unto these my daughters, or unto their sons unto whom they have given birth? ⁴⁴ Now therefore come thou, let us make a covenant, I and thou, and let it be for a witness between me and thee. ⁴⁵ Then Jacob took a stone and set it up for a pillar. ⁴⁶ And Jacob said unto his brethren, Gather stones; and they took stones and made a heap; and they ate there upon the heap. ⁴⁷ And Laban called it Jegarsahadutha, but Jacob called it Galeed. ⁴⁸ And Laban said, This heap is a witness between me and thee this day. Therefore was the name of it called Galeed; ⁴⁹ and Mizpah; for he said, The LORD watch between me and thee when we are absent one from another. ⁵⁰ If thou shalt afflict my daughters, or if thou shalt take other wives beside my daughters, no man is with us; see, God is witness between me and thee. ⁵¹ And Laban said to Jacob, Behold this heap, and behold this pillar, which I have raised up between me and thee; ⁵² let this heap be witness and this pillar be witness that I will not pass over this heap against thee and that thou shalt not pass over this heap and this pillar against me, for harm. ⁵³ The God of Abraham and the God of Nahor, the God of their fathers, judge between us. And Jacob swore by the fear of his father Isaac. ⁵⁴ Then Jacob offered sacrifice upon the mount and called his brethren to eat bread; and they ate bread and slept in the mount. ⁵⁵ And early in the morning Laban rose up and kissed his sons and his daughters and blessed them; and Laban departed and returned unto his place.

²⁴ ¶ And Jacob was left alone, and a man wrestled with him until the breaking of the day.

⁴ And Esau ran to meet him and embraced him and fell on his neck and kissed him, and they wept.

²⁰ And there he erected an altar, and called it Elelohe-Israel (the Strong God of Israel).

¹⁰ And God said unto him, Thy name is Jacob; thy name shall not be called any more Jacob, but Israel shall be thy name, and he called his name Israel.

¹⁶ These are the names of the men whom Moses sent to spy out the land. And Moses called Hosea, the son of Nun, Joshua.

²⁵ Then Saul said to David, Blessed art thou, my son David; without a doubt thou shalt do great things and prevail. So David went on his way, and Saul returned to his place.

²⁵ And he sent by the hand of Nathan, the prophet; and he called his name Jedidiah, {Heb. beloved of the LORD}, by the LORD.

³¹ And Elijah took twelve stones, according to the number of the tribes of the sons of Jacob, unto whom the word of the LORD came, saying, Israel shall be thy name;

³⁴ Unto this day they do after the former manners; they do not fear the LORD, neither do they keep his statutes nor his ordinances nor the law and the commandments which the LORD commanded the sons of Jacob, whom he named Israel,

⁷ ¶ When a man’s ways please the LORD, he makes even his enemies to be at peace with him.

² And the Gentiles shall see thy righteousness and all the kings thy glory; and thou shalt be given a new name, which the mouth of the LORD shall name. ³ Thou shalt also be a crown of glory in the hand of the LORD and a royal diadem in the hand of thy God. ⁴ Thou shalt no longer be termed Forsaken; neither shall thy land any longer be termed Desolate; but thou shalt be called Hephzibah {Heb. my will in her} and thy land Beulah; {Heb. married}; for the will of the LORD shall be in thee, and thy land shall be married.

¹⁵ And ye shall leave your name for a curse unto my chosen; for the Lord GOD shall slay thee and call his slaves by another name.

⁴² And he brought him to Jesus. And when Jesus beheld him, he said, Thou art Simon the son of Jonah: thou shalt be called Cephas, which is by interpretation, A stone.

¹⁷ He that has an ear let him hear what the Spirit saith unto the congregations {Gr. ekklesia – called out ones}; To him that overcomes I will give to eat of the hidden manna and will give him a small white stone and in the stone a new name written, which no one knows except the one that receives it.

²⁸ Therefore let God give thee of the dew of heaven and of the fatness of the earth and plenty of wheat and new wine. ²⁹ Let the peoples serve thee and nations bow down to thee; be lord over thy brethren, and let thy mother’s sons bow down to thee; cursed be every one that curses thee, and blessed be he that blesses thee.

³ And may God Almighty bless thee and make thee fruitful and multiply thee that thou may be a congregation of peoples ⁴ and give thee the blessing of Abraham, to thee and to thy seed with thee; that thou may inherit the land in which thou art a stranger, which God gave unto Abraham.

¹³ And, behold, the LORD stood above it and said, I AM the God of Abraham, thy father, and the God of Isaac; the land upon which thou dost lie, to thee will I give it and to thy seed; ¹⁴ and thy seed shall be as the dust of the earth, and thou shalt multiply to the west and to the east and to the Aquilon and to the Negev; and in thee and in thy seed shall all the families of the earth be blessed.

²⁶ And he said, Let me go, for the day breaks. And he said, I will not let thee go except thou bless me. ²⁷ And he said unto him, What is thy name? And he said, Jacob.

²⁹ The hidden things of the LORD our God are uncovered unto us and to our children for ever, that we may do all the words of this law.

¹⁶ And the angel of the LORD replied unto Manoah, Though thou detain me, I will not eat of thy bread, but if thou wilt offer a burnt offering, sacrifice it unto the LORD. For Manoah did not know that this was the angel of the LORD. ¹⁷ And Manoah said unto the angel of the LORD, What is thy name that when thy words come to pass we may honour thee? ¹⁸ And the angel of the LORD replied, Why dost thou ask for my name? It is wonderful.

⁷ ¶ Canst thou by searching find out God? Canst thou come unto the perfection of the Almighty?

⁴ Who has ascended up into heaven, or descended? who has gathered the wind in his fists? who has bound the waters in a garment? who has established all the ends of the earth? what is his name, and what is his son’s name, if thou canst tell?

⁶ For unto us a child is born, unto us a son is given, and the government is placed upon his shoulder, and his name shall be called The Wonderful One, The Counsellor, The God, The Mighty One, The Eternal Father, The Prince of Peace.

¹ ¶ Come, and let us return unto the LORD; for he has torn, and he will heal us; he has smitten, and he will bind us up.

¹⁹ And the angel answering said unto him, I am Gabriel, who stands in the presence of God, and am sent to speak unto thee and to show thee this gospel.

¹³ And she called the name of the LORD that spoke unto her, Thou God that is seen: for she said, Have I not also here seen the back of him that sees me?

¹⁹ And he called the name of that place Bethel, since the name of that city was called Luz at first.

¹⁰ and they saw the God of Israel; and there was under his feet as it were a paved work of a sapphire stone like unto the heaven when it is clear. ¹¹ But he did not lay his hand upon the princes of the sons of Israel, and they saw God and ate and drank.

¹⁴ And he said, My presence {Heb. faces} shall go with thee, and I will give thee rest.

¹⁹ And he replied, I will make all my goodness pass before thee, and I will proclaim the name that I AM before thee; and I will have mercy on whom I will have mercy and will show clemency on whom I will show clemency. ²⁰ He further said, Thou canst not see my face; for no man shall see me and live. ²¹ And the LORD continued saying, Behold, there is a place by me, and thou shalt stand upon the rock; ²² and it shall come to pass while my glory passes by, that I will put thee in a cleft of the rock and will cover thee with my hand until I have passed by. ²³ Then I will take away my hand, and thou shalt see my back parts, but my face {Heb. faces} shall not be seen.

⁸ With him I will speak mouth to mouth and by sight not by enigmas; he shall see the similitude of the LORD. Why then were ye not afraid to speak against my slave Moses?

²⁴ and ye said, Behold, the LORD our God has shown us his glory and his greatness, and we have heard his voice out of the midst of the fire; we have seen this day that God does talk with man, and he lives.

¹⁰ And there never arose a prophet since in Israel like Moses, who had known the LORD face to face,

²² And when Gideon perceived that he was the angel of the LORD, Gideon said, Alas, O Lord GOD! for I have seen the angel of the LORD face to face. ²³ And the LORD said unto him, Peace be unto thee; do not fear, thou shalt not die.

⁸ And he went up from there to Penuel and spoke unto them likewise; and those of Penuel answered him as the men of Succoth had answered him.

¹⁷ Likewise he beat down the tower of Penuel and slew the men of the city.

²¹ But the angel of the LORD did not appear any more to Manoah and to his wife. Then Manoah knew that he was the angel of the LORD. ²² And Manoah said unto his wife, We shall surely die because we have seen God.

²⁵ ¶ And Jeroboam rebuilt Shechem in Mount Ephraim and dwelt therein, and going out from there, rebuilt Penuel.

¹⁸ No man has seen God at any time; the only begotten Son, which is in the bosom of the Father, he has declared him.

¹⁸ Therefore we all, beholding as in a glass the glory of the Lord with uncovered face, are transformed from glory to glory into the same likeness, even as by the Spirit of the Lord.

⁶ For the God, who commanded the light to shine out of darkness, has shined in our hearts to bring forth the light of the knowledge of the clarity of God in the face of Jesus Christ.

⁶ ¶ I marvel that ye are so soon removed from him that called you into the grace of Christ unto another gospel,

¹⁷ that the God of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of glory, may give unto you the spirit of wisdom and revelation in the knowledge of him;

¹⁵ who is the image of the invisible God, the firstborn of every creature;

¹⁰ but is now made manifest by the appearing of our Saviour Jesus Christ, who has annulled death, and has brought life and incorruption to light through the gospel,

²⁷ By faith he forsook Egypt, not fearing the wrath of the king; for he endured, as seeing him who is invisible.

¹⁵ ¶ And when the morning arose, then the angels hastened Lot, saying, Arise, take thy wife and thy two daughters who are here; lest thou be consumed in the iniquity of the city.

²³ The sun was rising upon the earth when Lot entered into Zoar.

²⁵ And when the man saw that he did not prevail against him, he touched the hollow of his thigh; and the hollow of Jacob’s thigh was disjointed as he wrestled with him.

¹⁷ For I am ready to halt, and my sorrow is continually before me.

² But unto you that fear my name shall the Sun of righteousness be born, and in his wings he shall bring saving health; and ye shall go forth and jump like calves of the herd.

⁷ And lest the greatness of the revelations should exalt me above measure, there is given to me a thorn in the flesh, a messenger of Satan to buffet me, lest I should be exalted above measure.

⁹ And he said unto me, My grace is sufficient for thee; for my strength is made perfect in weakness. Most gladly, therefore, I will rather glory in my weaknesses that the power of Christ may dwell in me.

⁵ Therefore, neither the priests of Dagon nor any that come into Dagon’s temple tread on the threshold of Dagon in Ashdod unto this day.
