¹² because I delivered the poor that cried and the fatherless who had no one to help him.

²² Ye shall not afflict any widow or fatherless child. ²³ If thou afflict them in any manner, and they cry at all unto me, I will surely hear their cry; ²⁴ and my wrath shall wax hot, and I will kill you with the sword; and your wives shall be widows, and your children fatherless.

¹⁸ he executes the rights of the fatherless and the widow and also loves the stranger, giving him food and clothing.

² For there were some that said, We, our sons, and our daughters, are many; therefore we have bought grain that we may eat and live. ³ There were also some that said, We have mortgaged our lands, vineyards, and houses, that we might buy grain because of the famine. ⁴ And there were some that said, We have borrowed money for the king’s tribute, and that upon our lands and vineyards. ⁵ Yet now, given that the flesh of our brethren is as our flesh and their sons as our sons, behold, we subject our sons and our daughters to slavery, and there are some of our daughters in bondage already; neither is it in our power to redeem them; for other men have our lands and vineyards. ⁶ ¶ And I was very angry when I heard their cry and these words. ⁷ Then I meditated unto myself, and I rebuked the principals and the rulers and said unto them, Does each one of you exact usury of his brother? And I set a great assembly against them. ⁸ And I said unto them, We after our ability have redeemed our brethren, the Jews who had been sold unto the Gentiles; and will ye even sell your brethren? And shall they be sold unto us? Then they remained silent, for they had nothing to answer. ⁹ Also I said, What you do is not good, do you not walk in the fear of our God, that ye not be the reproach of our enemies the Gentiles? ¹⁰ I, likewise, and my brethren and my servants, have lent them money and grain; let us now release them from this burden. ¹¹ Restore, I pray you, to them, today, their lands, their vineyards, their oliveyards, and their houses, and even the hundredth part of the money, and of the grain, the wine, and the oil, that ye exact of them. ¹² Then they said, We will return it and will require nothing of them; so we will do as thou sayest. Then I called the priests and caused them to sware that they should do according to this promise. ¹³ Also I shook my lap and said, Thus will God shake out each man from his house and from his labour, that does not perform this promise, even thus shall he be shaken out and emptied. And all the congregation said, Amen, and praised the LORD. And the people did according to this promise.

⁵ ¶ Certainly thy wickedness is great and thine iniquities have no end. ⁶ For thou didst take a pledge from thy brother without cause and stripped the naked of their clothing. ⁷ Thou didst not give water to drink to the weary, and thou hast withheld bread from the hungry. ⁸ But the man of means had the earth; and the honourable man dwelt in it. ⁹ Thou hast sent the widows away empty, and the arms of the fatherless have been broken.

⁴ They turn the needy out of the way; and all the poor of the earth hide themselves from them.

¹⁷ or have eaten my morsel alone and the fatherless has not eaten thereof;

²¹ if I have lifted up my hand against the fatherless, even when I saw that they would all help me in the gate;

⁵ A father of the fatherless and a defender of the widows is God in his holy habitation.

¹² For he shall deliver the destitute when he cries and the poor that has no helper.

² How long will ye judge unjustly and accept the persons of the wicked? Selah. ³ Do right concerning the poor and fatherless; do justice to the poor and destitute. ⁴ Deliver the poor and destitute; deliver them out of the hand of the wicked.

¹³ ¶ Whosoever stops his ears at the cry of the poor, he also shall cry himself but shall not be heard.

¹¹ ¶ If thou forbear to deliver those that are drawn unto death and those that are ready to be slain, ¹² if thou should say, Behold, we knew it not; shall not he that weighs the hearts understand it? and he that keeps thy soul, does he not know it? and shall he not render to every man according to his works?

¹⁶ He judged the cause of the poor and needy; then it was well with him. Is this not to know me? said the LORD.

²⁷ The pure and undefiled religion before God and the Father is this, To visit the fatherless and widows in their tribulation and to keep thyself unspotted from this world.
