¹ ¶ I made a covenant with my eyes; why then should I look upon a maid? ² For what reward would God give me from above and what inheritance of the Almighty from on high? ³ Is there no destruction for the wicked? And banishment for the workers of iniquity? ⁴ Does he not see my ways and count all my steps? ⁵ If I have walked with falsehood or if my foot has hastened to deceit, ⁶ let me be weighed in a just balance, that God may know my integrity. ⁷ If my step has turned out of the way and my heart walked after my eyes and if any blot has cleaved to my hands, ⁸ then let me sow, and let another eat, and let my offspring be rooted out. ⁹ ¶ If my heart has been deceived regarding a woman, or if I have laid in wait at my neighbour’s door, ¹⁰ then let my wife grind for another, and let others bow down upon her. ¹¹ For this is lewdness and iniquity that is proven. ¹² For it is a fire that consumes unto hell and would root out all my increase. ¹³ If I had despised the right of my manslave or of my maidslave, when they contended with me; ¹⁴ what then would I do when God rises up? And when he visits, what would I answer him? ¹⁵ Did not he that made me in the belly also make him? And did not the same one fashion us in the womb? ¹⁶ ¶ If I have disturbed the desire of the poor or have caused the eyes of the widow to fail; ¹⁷ or have eaten my morsel alone and the fatherless has not eaten thereof; ¹⁸ (for from my youth the fatherless was brought up with me, as with a father, and I have guided the widow from my mother’s womb) ¹⁹ if I have seen any perish for want of clothing or any needy without a covering; ²⁰ if his loins have not blessed me and if he were not warmed with the fleece of my sheep; ²¹ if I have lifted up my hand against the fatherless, even when I saw that they would all help me in the gate; ²² then let my back fall from my shoulder blade, and my arm be broken from its joint. ²³ For I feared destruction from God, against whose highness I could have no power. ²⁴ ¶ If I have made gold my hope or have said to the fine gold, Thou art my confidence; ²⁵ if I rejoiced because my wealth was being multiplied, and because my hand had gotten much; ²⁶ if I beheld the sun when it shone or the moon walking in beauty; ²⁷ and my heart has been secretly enticed, and my mouth kissed my hand; ²⁸ this would also be a proven iniquity; for I should have denied the God that is sovereign. ²⁹ If I rejoiced at the destruction of the one that hated me or lifted up myself when evil found him; ³⁰ for I have never even suffered my mouth to sin by wishing a curse upon his soul; ³¹ when the servants of my tent said, Oh that we had of his flesh! We would never be satisfied. ³² The stranger did not lodge in the street, but I opened my doors to the traveller. ³³ ¶ If I covered my transgressions as Adam, by hiding my iniquity in my bosom; ³⁴ if I feared a great multitude or did the contempt of families terrify me, that I kept silence, and did not go out of the door? ³⁵ Oh that someone would hear me! Behold, my mark is, that the Almighty will testify for me, even though my adversary had written down the charges. ³⁶ Surely I would take it upon my shoulder and bind it as a crown to me. ³⁷ I would declare unto him the number of my steps; as a prince I would go near unto him. ³⁸ If my land cries against me and all its furrows likewise complain; ³⁹ if I ate of its strength without money or have afflicted the soul of its owners; ⁴⁰ let thistles grow up unto me instead of wheat and stinkweed instead of barley. ² that the sons of God saw that the daughters of men were fair, and they took for themselves wives of all whom they chose.

² And it came to pass one evening, that David arose from off his bed and walked upon the roof of the king’s house, and from the roof he saw a woman washing herself, and the woman was very beautiful to look upon. ³ And David sent and enquired after the woman. And one said, Is not this Bathsheba, the daughter of Eliam, the wife of Uriah, the Hittite? ⁴ And David sent messengers and took her, and she came in unto him, and he lay with her. ³⁷ ¶ Turn away my eyes from beholding vanity, and cause me to live in thy way.

²⁵ Let thine eyes look upon that which is right, and let thine eyelids straighten thy path before thee.

²⁵ Lust not after her beauty in thine heart, neither let her take thee with her eyes.

³¹ Do not look upon the wine when it is red, when it gives its colour in the cup, it goes down smoothly. ³² At the last it bites like a serpent and stings like an adder. ³³ Thine eyes shall behold strange women, and thine heart shall utter perverse things.

²⁸ but I say unto you, That whosoever looks on a woman to lust after her has committed adultery with her already in his heart. ²⁹ Therefore if thy right eye should bring thee occasion to stumble, pluck it out and cast it from thee; for it is better for thee that one of thy members should perish, and not that thy whole body should be cast into hell.

¹⁴ But each one is tempted, when they are drawn away of their own lust and enticed. ¹⁵ Then when lust has conceived, it brings forth sin; and sin, when it is finished, brings forth death.

¹⁶ For all that is in the world, the lust of the flesh and the lust of the eyes and the pride of life, is not of the Father, but is of the world.

²⁹ This is the portion of a wicked man from God and the heritage that God appoints unto him by his word.

¹³ This is the portion of a wicked man with God and the heritage of the violent, which they shall receive of the Almighty.

⁴ Let marriage be honourable in all and the bed undefiled; but the fornicators and adulterers God will judge.

³⁰ That the wicked is reserved for the day of destruction, they shall be brought forth to the day of wrath.

²² There is no darkness nor shadow of death, where the workers of iniquity may hide themselves.

²³ But thou, O God, shalt bring them down into the pit of the grave; bloody and deceitful men shall not live out half their days, but I will trust in thee.

¹⁸ Surely thou didst set them in slippery places; in desolation thou shalt cause them to fall.

²⁷ when what you have feared comes as destruction, and your calamity comes as a whirlwind; when tribulation and anguish come upon you.

²⁹ ¶ The way of the LORD is strength to the perfect, but it is terror to the workers of iniquity.

¹⁵ ¶ It is joy to the just to do judgment, but it shall be destruction to the workers of iniquity.

²¹ For the LORD shall rise up as in Mount Perazim, he shall be wroth as in the valley of Gibeon, that he may do his work, his strange work; and bring to pass his act, his strange act.

¹³ Enter ye in at the narrow gate, for the way that leads to destruction is wide and spacious, and those who follow it are many;

²² What if God, desiring to show his wrath and to make his power known, endured with much meekness the vessels of wrath, prepared for death,

³ For when they shall say, Peace and safety; then sudden destruction shall come upon them, as travail upon a woman with child; and they shall not escape.

⁹ who shall be punished with eternal destruction by the presence of the Lord and by the glory of his power,

¹ ¶ But there were also false prophets among the people, even as there shall be false teachers among you, who covertly shall bring in destructive sects and shall deny the Lord that bought them, bringing upon themselves swift destruction.

⁷ Even as Sodom and Gomorrha and the cities about them in like manner, giving themselves over to fornication and going after strange flesh, were set forth for an example, having received the judgment of eternal fire.

¹³ And she called the name of the LORD that spoke unto her, Thou God that is seen: for she said, Have I not also here seen the back of him that sees me?

⁹ For the eyes of the LORD run to and fro throughout the whole earth, to show himself strong in the behalf of those whose heart is perfect toward him. Herein thou hast done foolishly, for from now on thou shalt have wars.

¹⁶ ¶ For now thou dost number my steps; thou dost not open up my sin.

²¹ For his eyes are upon the ways of man, and he sees all his steps.

²¹ shall not God search this out? For he knows the secrets of the heart.

¹ To the Overcomer, A Psalm of David. ¶ O LORD, thou hast searched me and known me. ² Thou knowest my sitting down and my rising up, thou dost understand my thoughts from afar. ³ Thou hast girded my walk and my rest, and hast prepared all my ways.

²¹ For the ways of man are before the eyes of the LORD, and he weighs all his goings.

³ ¶ The eyes of the LORD are in every place, beholding those who are evil and those who are good.

¹⁷ For my eyes are upon all their ways, which they have not hid from me, neither does their iniquity hide from the presence of my eyes.

¹⁹ great in counsel and magnificent in works: for thine eyes are open upon all the ways of the sons of men to give unto each one according to his ways and according to the fruit of his doings;

⁴⁸ Nathanael said unto him, From where dost thou know me? Jesus answered and said unto him, Before Philip called thee, when thou wast under the fig tree, I saw thee.

¹³ Neither is there any created thing that is not manifested in his presence, but all things are naked and opened unto the eyes of him of whom we speak.

² O ye sons of men, how long will ye turn my glory into shame? how long will ye love vanity, and seek after the lie? Selah.

³ O LORD my God, if I have done this: if there is iniquity in my hands, ⁴ if I have rewarded evil unto him that was at peace with me, then let my persecutor escape without retribution. ⁵ Let the enemy persecute my soul, and take it; let him tread down my life upon the earth and lay my honour in the dust. Selah.

² Each one speaks vanity with his neighbour: they speak with flattering lips and with a double heart.

²⁰ If we have forgotten the name of our God or stretched out our hands to a strange god, ²¹ shall not God search this out? For he knows the secrets of the heart.

¹¹ ¶ He that tills his land shall be satisfied with bread, but he that follows vain persons is void of understanding.

⁵ thus hath the LORD said, What iniquity have your fathers found in me that they are gone far from me and have walked after vanity and are become vain?

⁸ Therefore thus hath the Lord GOD said: Because ye have spoken vanity, and seen lies; therefore, behold, I am against you, said the Lord GOD.

¹¹ If there is one walking in the spirit of falsehood, he shall lie, saying, I will prophesy unto thee of wine and of strong drink; he shall even be the prophet of this people.

²² The LORD God of gods, the LORD God of gods, he knows and let Israel also know; if it is in rebellion, or if in transgression against the LORD (save us not this day)

³ Do not multiply thyself speaking great and lofty things; let arrogant words cease from your mouth, for the LORD is the all-knowing God, and the magnificent works are his.

² Oh that my grief and calamity were justly weighed and laid equally in the balances!

⁵ In no wise should I justify you; until I die I will not remove my integrity from me. ⁶ I hold fast to my righteousness and will not let it go; my heart shall not reproach me so long as I live.

⁶ For the LORD knows the way of the righteous, but the way of the ungodly shall perish.

⁸ The LORD shall judge the people: judge me, O LORD, according to my righteousness and according to the integrity that is in me. ⁹ Let wickedness consume the wicked; but establish the just: for the righteous God is he who tries the hearts and kidneys.

² Let my sentence come forth from thy presence; let thine eyes behold uprightness. ³ Thou hast proved my heart; thou hast visited me in the night; thou hast refined me and hast found no iniquity; that which I thought did not pass through my mouth.

¹ A Psalm of David. ¶ Judge me, O LORD, for I have walked in my integrity; I have trusted also in the LORD; therefore I shall not slide.

²³ Search me, O God, and know my heart; try me and know my thoughts

¹¹ ¶ A just weight and balance are the LORD’s; all the weights of the bag are his work.

⁷ The way of the just is uprightness: thou, most upright, dost weigh the path of the just.

²⁷ TEKEL; Thou art weighed in the balances and art found wanting.

¹¹ Can I be pure with false balances and with a bag of deceitful weights?

²³ And then I will profess unto them, I never knew you; depart from me, ye that work iniquity.

¹⁹ ¶ Nevertheless, the foundation of God stands sure, having this seal, The Lord knows those that are his. And, Let every one that names the name of Christ depart from iniquity.

³⁹ And it shall be unto you for a fringe that ye may look upon it and remember all the commandments of the LORD and do them and that ye seek not after your own heart and your own eyes, seeking after which ye fornicate.

³⁰ If I wash myself with snow water and make my hands never so clean;

¹¹ My feet have held to his steps, I have kept his way, and have not departed.

³ I will set nothing of Belial before my eyes: I hate the work of those that betray; it shall not cleave to me.

⁹ Rejoice, O young man, in thy youth; and let thy heart cheer thee in the days of thy youth and walk in the ways of thine heart and in the sight of thine eyes; but know thou, that for all these things God will bring thee into judgment.

¹⁵ He that walks in righteousness, he that speaks uprightly; he that despises the gain of violence, he that shakes his hands from receiving bribes; he that stops his ears to not hear of blood; he who shuts his eyes to not see evil;

⁹ And those that escape of you shall remember me among the Gentiles where they shall be carried captives because I am broken because of your whorish heart, which has departed from me and because of your eyes, which went a whoring after your idols: and they shall loathe themselves for the evils which they have committed in all their abominations.

³ Son of man, these men have caused their uncleanness to come up over their heart and have established the stumblingblock of their iniquity before their face: should I be enquired of at all by them?

⁷ For any man of the house of Israel or of the strangers that sojourn in Israel who has separated himself from walking after me and has set up his idols in his heart and has established the stumblingblock of his iniquity before his face and comes to the prophet to enquire of him concerning me, I, the LORD, will answer him by myself:

²⁹ Therefore if thy right eye should bring thee occasion to stumble, pluck it out and cast it from thee; for it is better for thee that one of thy members should perish, and not that thy whole body should be cast into hell.

¹⁶ I also will do this unto you: I will even appoint over you terror, consumption, and the burning ague that shall consume the eyes and torment the soul, and ye shall sow your seed in vain, for your enemies shall eat it.

³⁰ Thou shalt betroth a wife, and another man shall lie with her; thou shalt build a house, and thou shalt not dwell therein; thou shalt plant a vineyard and shalt not gather the grapes thereof. ³¹ Thine ox shall be slain before thine eyes, and thou shalt not eat thereof; thine ass shall be violently taken away from before thy face and shall not be restored to thee; thy sheep shall be given unto thine enemies, and thou shalt have no one to rescue them. ³² Thy sons and thy daughters shall be given unto another people, and thine eyes shall look and fail with longing for them all the day long; and there shall be no strength in thine hand. ³³ The fruit of thy land and all thy labours shall a people which thou knowest not eat up; and thou shalt only be oppressed and crushed all the days.

³⁸ Thou shalt carry much seed out into the field and shalt gather but little in, for the locust shall consume it.

⁵¹ and he shall eat the fruit of thy beast and the fruit of thy land until thou art destroyed, which also shall not leave thee either grain, wine, or oil, or the increase of thy cows or flocks of thy sheep until he has destroyed thee.

³ For when those of Israel had sown, the Midianites would come up and the Amalekites and the sons of the east. They would come up against them ⁴ and encamp against them and destroy the fruits of the earth as far as Gaza, and they would leave nothing to eat in Israel neither sheep nor ox nor ass. ⁵ For they would come up with their livestock and their tents in a great multitude like locusts, for there was no number in them nor in their camels, and they would enter into the land destroying it. ⁶ And Israel was greatly impoverished because of the Midianites, and the sons of Israel cried unto the LORD.

⁴ His sons are far from saving health, and they shall be crushed in the gate, and there shall be no one to deliver them. ⁵ The hungry shall eat up his harvest, and even take it out from among the thorns, and the thirsty shall drink up their substance.

³⁰ He shall not escape from the darkness; the flame shall dry up his branches, and by the breath of his mouth he shall perish.

¹⁹ He shall have neither son nor grandson among his people, nor any to succeed him in his dwellings.

¹⁸ He shall restore the work that was not his; according to the substance that he took; neither shall he devour, nor rejoice.

⁶ In the field they reap their fodder, and the wicked gather the vintage that is not theirs.

¹³ Let his posterity be cut off, and in the generation following let their name be blotted out.

¹⁵ Thou shalt sow, but thou shalt not reap; thou shalt tread the olives, but thou shalt not anoint thee with the oil; and sweet wine, but shalt not drink the wine.

⁵ And the cardinals of the Philistines came up unto her and said unto her, Entice him and see what gives him his great strength and by what means we may overcome him, that we may bind him to afflict him; and each one of us will give thee eleven hundred pieces of silver.

⁴ For it came to pass when Solomon was old, that his wives turned away his heart after other gods, and his heart was not perfect with the LORD his God, as was the heart of David, his father.

²⁶ Did not Solomon, king of Israel, sin by these things? Yet among many nations there was no king like him, who was beloved of his God, and God made him king over all Israel; nevertheless, strange women caused even him to offend.

¹⁵ The eye of the adulterer waits for the twilight, saying, No eye shall see me; and disguises his face. ¹⁶ In the dark they dig through houses, which they had marked for themselves in the daytime; they do not know the light.

¹⁶ to deliver thee from the strange woman, even from the stranger who flatters with her words, ¹⁷ who forsakes the prince of her youth and forgets the covenant of her God. ¹⁸ Therefore her house inclines unto death, and her paths unto the dead. ¹⁹ None that go unto her return again, neither do they take hold of the paths of life.

³ For the lips of the strange woman drop as a honeycomb, and her mouth is smoother than oil, ⁴ But her end is bitter as wormwood, sharp as a twoedged sword. ⁵ Her feet go down to death, her steps uphold Sheol, ⁶ lest thou should ponder the path of life, her ways are unstable; thou shalt not know them. ⁷ Hear me now therefore, O ye sons, and do not depart from the words of my mouth. ⁸ Remove thy way far from her, and do not come near the door of her house, ⁹ lest thou give thine honour unto others and thy years unto the cruel, ¹⁰ lest strangers be filled with thy wealth, and thy labours be in the house of a stranger, ¹¹ and thou mourn at the last when thy flesh and thy body are consumed ¹² and say, How have I hated chastening and my heart despised reproof ¹³ and have not obeyed the voice of those who chastened me, nor inclined my ear to those that instructed me! ¹⁴ I have been in almost every kind of evil, in the midst of society and of the congregation. ¹⁵ ¶ Drink waters out of thine own cistern and running waters out of thine own well. ¹⁶ Let thy fountains be dispersed abroad, and rivers of thy waters in the streets. ¹⁷ Let them be only thine own and not for strangers with thee. ¹⁸ Thy fountain shall be blessed; and rejoice with the wife of thy youth. ¹⁹ Let her be as the loving hind and pleasant roe; let her breasts satisfy thee at all times; and be thou ravished always with her love, without eyes for anyone else. ²⁰ And why wilt thou, my son, be ravished with a woman belonging to someone else, and embrace the bosom of a stranger? ²¹ For the ways of man are before the eyes of the LORD, and he weighs all his goings. ²² His own iniquities shall take hold of the wicked, and he shall be imprisoned with the cords of his sins. ²³ He shall die because he did not submit to chastening; and due to the greatness of his folly he shall go astray.

²¹ With her much fair speech she caused him to yield; with the flattering of her lips she persuaded him.

¹⁴ ¶ The mouth of strange women is a deep pit; he that is abhorred of the LORD shall fall therein.

²⁶ and I find more bitter than death the woman whose heart is snares and nets, and her hands are bonds; whosoever pleases God shall escape from her, but the sinner shall be held prisoner in her.

⁸ They were as fed horses in the morning; each one neighed after his neighbour’s wife.

⁴ They are all adulterers as an oven heated by the baker who shall cease from waking after he has kneaded the dough until it is leavened.

⁵ and all the firstborn in the land of Egypt shall die, from the firstborn of Pharaoh that sits upon his throne even unto the firstborn of the maidservant that is behind the mill and all the firstborn of beasts.

³⁰ Thou shalt betroth a wife, and another man shall lie with her; thou shalt build a house, and thou shalt not dwell therein; thou shalt plant a vineyard and shalt not gather the grapes thereof.

¹¹ Thus hath the LORD said, Behold, I will raise up evil against thee out of thy own house, and I will take thy wives before thy eyes and give them unto thy neighbour, and he shall lie with thy wives in the sight of this sun.

² Take the millstones and grind meal; uncover thy locks, remove the shoes from thy feet, uncover the thigh, pass over the rivers.

¹⁰ Therefore I will give their wives unto others and their fields unto those that shall inherit them: for each one from the least even unto the greatest is given to greed; from the prophet even unto the priest every one deals falsely.

¹³ They sacrifice upon the tops of the mountains and burn incense upon the hills, under oaks and poplars and elms, that had good shade; therefore your daughters shall commit whoredom, and your daughters-in-law shall commit adultery. ¹⁴ I will not visit upon your daughters when they commit whoredom, nor upon your daughters-in-law when they commit adultery: for they offer with whores, and they sacrifice with cult prostitutes; therefore the people without understanding shall fall.

⁴¹ Two women shall be grinding at the mill; the one shall be taken and the other left.

⁹ Then Abimelech called Abraham and said unto him, What hast thou done unto us and in what have I sinned against thee that thou hast brought on me and on my kingdom such a great sin? Thou hast done deeds unto me that ought not to be done.

¹⁰ And Abimelech said, What is this thou hast done unto us? One of the people might easily have slept with thy wife, and thou should have brought the sin upon us.

²⁴ ¶ And it came to pass about three months after, that it was told Judah, saying, Tamar, thy daughter-in-law, has played the harlot; and also, behold, she is with child by whoredom. And Judah said, Bring her forth and let her be burnt.

⁹ there is none greater in this house than I; neither has he kept back anything from me but thee because thou art his wife; how then can I do this great wickedness and sin against God?

¹⁴ Thou shalt not commit adultery.

¹⁰ ¶ And the man that commits adultery with another man’s wife, he that commits adultery with his neighbour’s wife, the adulterer and the adulteress shall surely die.

²² If a man is found lying with a woman married to a husband, then they shall both of them die, both the man that lay with the woman and the woman; so shalt thou put away evil from Israel. ²³ When a damsel that is a virgin is betrothed unto a husband and a man finds her in the city and lies with her, ²⁴ then ye shall bring them both out unto the gate of that city, and ye shall stone them with stones, and they shall die; the damsel because she did not cry out, being in the city, and the man because he has humbled his neighbour’s wife; so thou shalt put away evil from among you.

²⁸ this would also be a proven iniquity; for I should have denied the God that is sovereign.

²⁹ So is he that goes in to his neighbour’s wife; whosoever touches her shall not be innocent. ³⁰ Men do not take a thief lightly, even if he steals to satisfy his soul when he is hungry; ³¹ and once he is taken, he shall restore sevenfold; he shall give all the substance of his house. ³² But whosoever commits adultery with a woman has a fault in his heart; he that does it corrupts his own soul. ³³ A wound and dishonour shall he get, and his reproach shall never be wiped away.

³⁸ And I will judge thee by the laws regarding women who commit adultery and those that shed blood; and I will give thee away in blood of fury and of jealousy.

²⁸ The increase of his house shall be taken captive; they shall be scattered in the day of his wrath.

⁶ Sheol is naked before him, and hell has no covering.

³³ The curse of the LORD is in the house of the wicked, but he shall bless the habitation of the just.

²⁷ Can a man take fire in his bosom and his clothes not be burned?

⁷ How shall I pardon thee for this? Thy sons have forsaken me and sworn by them that are not gods: when I had fed them to the full, they then committed adultery and assembled themselves by troops in the harlots’ houses. ⁸ They were as fed horses in the morning; each one neighed after his neighbour’s wife. ⁹ Shall I not visit for these things? said the LORD; and shall not my soul be avenged on such a nation as this?

⁵ And I will come near unto you for judgment; and I will be a swift witness against the sorcerers and against the adulterers and against false swearers and against those that oppress the hireling in his wages, the widow, and the fatherless, and that turn aside the stranger from his right, and do not fear me, said the LORD of the hosts.

²⁰ And if a man smites his slave or his maid with a rod and he dies under his hand, he shall be surely punished. ²¹ Notwithstanding, if he continues a day or two, he shall not be punished, for he is his money.

²⁶ And if someone smites the eye of their slave or the eye of their maid that it perishes, he shall let them go free for their eye’s sake. ²⁷ And if he smites out his manslave’s tooth or his maidslave’s tooth, he shall let them go free for their tooth’s sake.

⁴³ Thou shalt not rule over him with rigor, but shalt fear thy God.

⁴⁶ And ye shall possess them as an inheritance for your children after you, to inherit as a possession; they shall be your bondmen for ever; but over your brethren, the sons of Israel, ye shall not rule over one another with rigor.

¹² ¶ And if thy brother, a Hebrew man, or a Hebrew woman, is sold unto thee and serves thee six years, then in the seventh year thou shalt send him forth from thee free. ¹³ And when thou sendest him out free from thee, thou shalt not send him away empty. ¹⁴ Thou shalt furnish him liberally out of thy flock and out of thy threshing floor and out of thy winepress; of that with which the LORD thy God has blessed thee thou shalt give unto him. ¹⁵ And thou shalt remember that thou wast a slave in the land of Egypt, and the LORD thy God ransomed thee; therefore, I command thee this thing to day.

¹⁴ ¶ Thou shalt not do violence unto a hired servant that is poor and needy, whether he is of thy brethren or of thy strangers that are in thy land within thy gates. ¹⁵ In his day thou shalt give him his hire, neither shall the sun go down upon it; for he is poor and with it sustains his life, lest he cry against thee unto the LORD, and it be sin unto thee.

¹⁴ At the end of seven years each one shall let his Hebrew brother go, who has been sold unto thee; therefore he shall serve thee six years, and thou shalt send him forth free from thee: but your fathers did not hearken unto me, nor incline their ear. ¹⁵ And ye were now converted and had done right in my sight in proclaiming liberty every man to his neighbour; and ye had made a covenant before me in the house which is called by my name: ¹⁶ but ye turned and polluted my name and caused each man his slave and each man his handmaid, whom ye had set at liberty at their pleasure, to return and brought them into subjection, to be unto you for slaves and for handmaids. ¹⁷ Therefore thus hath the LORD said: Ye have not hearkened unto me, in proclaiming liberty, each one to his brother and each man to his neighbour; behold, I proclaim a liberty for you, said the LORD, to the sword, to the pestilence, and to the famine; and I will make you to be removed into all the kingdoms of the earth.

⁹ And, ye masters, do the same unto them, forbearing threats, knowing that their Master and yours is also in the heavens and that he is no respecter of persons.

¹ ¶ Masters, do that which is just and right with your slaves, knowing that ye also have a Master in heaven.

³² For he is not a man, as I am, that I should answer him, and we should come together unto judgment.

² I will say unto God, Do not condemn me; cause me to understand why thou dost contend with me.

⁶ Arise, O LORD, in thine anger; lift up thyself because of the rage of mine enemies: and awake the judgment in my favour that thou hast commanded.

¹² When he makes requirement for blood, he remembers them; he does not forget the cry of the humble.

¹⁹ Arise, O LORD; let not man prevail: let the Gentiles be judged in thy sight.

¹² ¶ Arise, O LORD; O God, lift up thine hand; forget not the humble. ¹³ In what does the wicked irritate God? He has said in his heart, Thou wilt not require accountability. ¹⁴ Thou hast seen it, for thou dost behold mischief and spite to requite it with thy hand: the poor commits himself unto thee; thou art the helper of the fatherless. ¹⁵ Break thou the arm of the wicked and the evil man; seek out his wickedness until thou find none.

⁹ when thou didst arise unto judgment, O God, to save all the meek of the earth. Selah.

² And enter not into judgment with thy slave; for in thy sight shall no man living be justified.

³ And what will ye do in the day of visitation and in the desolation which shall come from far? To whom will ye flee for help and where will ye leave your glory?

⁷ ¶ The days of visitation are come, the days of recompense are come; Israel shall know it; the prophet is a fool, the spiritual man is a fool, for the multitude of thine iniquity, and the great hatred.

⁴ The best of them is as a brier; the most upright as a thorn hedge: the day of thy watchmen, thy visitation, comes; now shall be their confusion.

¹³ Be silent, O all flesh, before the LORD, for he is raised up out of his holy habitation.

² who upon seeing some of his disciples eat bread with common, that is to say, with unwashed, hands, they condemned them.

¹⁹ ¶ Now we know that all that the law says, it says to those who are under the law, that every mouth may be stopped, and all the world may submit themselves unto God.

¹³ For judgment without mercy shall be done unto the one that has shown no mercy; and mercy boasts against judgment.

⁵ Yet now, given that the flesh of our brethren is as our flesh and their sons as our sons, behold, we subject our sons and our daughters to slavery, and there are some of our daughters in bondage already; neither is it in our power to redeem them; for other men have our lands and vineyards.

³ Is it good unto thee that thou should oppress, that thou should reject the work of thine hands and shine upon the counsel of the wicked?

⁸ ¶ Thine hands have formed me and fashioned me together round about; yet thou dost destroy me. ⁹ Remember now that thou hast formed me as the clay; and wilt thou bring me into dust again? ¹⁰ Hast thou not poured me out as milk and curdled me like cheese? ¹¹ Thou hast clothed me with skin and flesh and hast hedged me with bones and sinews. ¹² Thou hast granted me life and mercy, and thy visitation has kept my spirit.

¹⁹ How much less to him who is not a respecter of the persons of princes, nor respects the rich more than the poor; for they all are the work of his hands.

¹⁴ I will praise thee; for I am fearfully and wonderfully made; marvellous are thy works, and that, my soul knows right well. ¹⁵ My body was not hid from thee, even though I was made in secret and brought together in the lowest parts of the earth. ¹⁶ Thine eyes did see my substance yet being imperfect; and in thy book all my members were written, which were then formed, without lacking one of them.

³¹ ¶ He that oppresses the poor reproaches his Maker, but he that has mercy on the poor, honours him.

² ¶ The rich and poor meet together; the LORD is the maker of them all.

⁷ Is it not to share thy bread with the hungry and that thou bring the poor that are cast out into thy house? when thou seest the naked, that thou cover him; and that thou not hide thyself from thy brother?

¹⁰ ¶ Have we not all one father? has not one God created us? why do we despise each man his brother by breaking the covenant of our fathers?

⁷ If there should be among you a poor man of one of thy brethren within any of thy towns in thy land which the LORD thy God gives thee, thou shalt not harden thine heart nor shut thine hand from thy poor brother, ⁸ but thou shalt open thine hand wide unto him and shalt surely lend him sufficient for his need, in that which he lacks. ⁹ Keep thyself that there not be a thought of Belial in thy heart, saying, The seventh year, the year of release, is at hand; and thine eye be evil against thy poor brother to give him nothing; for he shall cry unto the LORD against thee, and it shall be a sin unto thee. ¹⁰ Thou shalt surely give unto him, and thine heart shall not be grieved when thou givest unto him because for this thing the LORD thy God shall bless thee in all thy works and in all that thou puttest thine hand to.

³² Thy sons and thy daughters shall be given unto another people, and thine eyes shall look and fail with longing for them all the day long; and there shall be no strength in thine hand.

¹⁶ Who is the hope of the poor, and iniquity closes her mouth.

¹⁹ Because he oppressed and forsook the poor; because he has violently taken away houses which he did not build,

⁷ Thou didst not give water to drink to the weary, and thou hast withheld bread from the hungry. ⁸ But the man of means had the earth; and the honourable man dwelt in it. ⁹ Thou hast sent the widows away empty, and the arms of the fatherless have been broken.

³ I am weary of my crying; my throat is dried; my eyes fail while I wait for my God.

⁹ Pe He has dispersed; he has given to the poor; Tzaddi his righteousness endures for ever; Koph his horn shall be exalted in glory.

⁸² Mine eyes fail for thy spoken word, saying, When wilt thou comfort me?

¹²³ ¶ Mine eyes fail for thy saving health and for the spoken word of thy righteousness.

¹⁴ Like a crane or a swallow, so did I complain; I mourned as a dove; I raised my eyes upward, O LORD, I am suffering violence; comfort me.

¹⁷ Ain As for us, our eyes have failed in seeking our vain help; in our watching we have watched for people that cannot save us.

²¹ and desiring to be fed with the crumbs which fell from the rich man’s table: moreover the dogs came and licked his sores.

²⁹ Then the disciples, each one according to what he had, determined to send relief unto the brethren who dwelt in Judea,

¹⁰ Only they asked that we should remember the poor; the same which I was also diligent to do.

¹¹ For the poor shall never cease out of the land; therefore, I command thee, saying, Thou shalt open thine hand wide unto thy brother, to thy poor and to thy needy, in thy land.

¹⁴ Thou shalt furnish him liberally out of thy flock and out of thy threshing floor and out of thy winepress; of that with which the LORD thy God has blessed thee thou shalt give unto him.

¹⁰ Then he said unto them, Go, eat the fat, and drink sweet wine, and send portions unto those who have nothing prepared; for this day is holy unto our Lord, and not sad; for the joy of the LORD is your strength.

¹² because I delivered the poor that cried and the fatherless who had no one to help him. ¹³ The blessing of the one that was ready to perish came upon me; and I caused the widow’s heart to sing for joy. ¹⁴ I put on righteousness, and it clothed me as a robe; and my diadem was judgment. ¹⁵ I was eyes to the blind and feet to the lame. ¹⁶ I was a father to the needy; and the cause which I did not know I searched out.

⁷ neither oppress any, but restores to the debtor his pledge, does not commit robbery, gives his bread to the hungry, and covers the naked with a garment,

³² ¶ And of the multitude of those that had believed was one heart and one soul; no one said that anything he possessed was his own, but they had all things common.

¹³ sharing for the needs of the saints, and given to hospitality.

²⁷ The pure and undefiled religion before God and the Father is this, To visit the fatherless and widows in their tribulation and to keep thyself unspotted from this world.

¹⁷ But whosoever has this world’s goods and sees his brother have need and shuts up his bowels of compassion from him, how does the charity of God abide in him?

¹⁵ And the men which were expressed by name rose up and took the captives, and, with the spoil, clothed all that were naked among them and arrayed them and shod them and gave them to eat and to drink and anointed them and carried all the feeble of them upon asses and brought them to Jericho, the city of palm trees, to their brethren; then they returned to Samaria.

⁶ For thou didst take a pledge from thy brother without cause and stripped the naked of their clothing.

⁴ They turn the needy out of the way; and all the poor of the earth hide themselves from them.

¹³ The blessing of the one that was ready to perish came upon me; and I caused the widow’s heart to sing for joy.

³⁶ naked, and ye clothed me; I was sick, and ye visited me; I was in prison, and ye came unto me.

⁴³ I was a stranger, and ye took me not in; naked, and ye clothed me not; sick and in prison, and ye visited me not.

¹¹ He answered and said unto them, He that has two coats, let him impart to him that has none; and he that has food, let him do likewise.

³⁹ Then Peter arose and went with them. When he was come, they brought him into the upper chamber: and all the widows stood by him weeping and showing the coats and garments which Dorcas had made them while she was with them.

¹⁶ and one of you says unto them, Depart in peace; be ye warmed and filled; but ye do not give them those things which are needful for the body; what shall it profit them?

¹⁸ My little children, let us not love in word neither in tongue, but in deed and in truth.

¹³ Without fail thou shalt deliver him the pledge again when the sun goes down that he may sleep in his own clothing and bless thee, and it shall be righteousness unto thee before the LORD thy God.

¹¹ When the ears that heard me, called me blessed; and when the eyes that saw me, gave witness to me:

²⁷ Ye also overwhelm the fatherless and dig a pit before your friend.

⁹ Thou hast sent the widows away empty, and the arms of the fatherless have been broken.

⁹ They pluck the fatherless from the breast and take a pledge of the poor.

¹² because I delivered the poor that cried and the fatherless who had no one to help him.

¹⁰ ¶ Do not remove the old landmark, and do not enter into the inheritance of the fatherless: ¹¹ For their redeemer is mighty; he shall judge their cause against thee.

²⁸ They are become fat; they shine; yea, they overpass in deeds of wickedness; they did not judge the cause, the cause of the fatherless; with all this they made themselves prosperous; and they did not judge the cause of the poor.

⁷ In thee they have despised father and mother; in the midst of thee they have dealt by oppression with the stranger; in thee they have vexed the fatherless and the widow.

¹ ¶ Woe unto those that devise iniquity and fabricate evil upon their beds! when the morning is light, they put it into effect because they have power in their hands. ² And they coveted fields and stole them, and houses and took them away; so they oppressed the man and his house, even the man and his heritage.

³ To complete the evil with their hands, the prince demands, and the judge judges for a reward; and the great man speaks the desires of his heart: and they confirm it.

²² The LORD God of gods, the LORD God of gods, he knows and let Israel also know; if it is in rebellion, or if in transgression against the LORD (save us not this day) ²³ that we have built us an altar to turn from following the LORD or if to offer thereon burnt offering or present or if to offer peace offerings thereon, let the LORD himself require it;

¹⁰ then let my wife grind for another, and let others bow down upon her.

⁴⁰ let thistles grow up unto me instead of wheat and stinkweed instead of barley. The words of Job are ended.

¹⁵ but the light of the wicked is taken from them, and the high arm is broken.

⁶ If I do not remember thee, my tongue shall cleave to the roof of my mouth; if I do not prefer to lift up Jerusalem as my chief joy.

¹¹ Certainly his excellency should make you afraid, and his dread should fall upon you.

²³ ¶ When he is about to fill his belly, God shall cast the fury of his wrath upon him and shall rain it upon him and upon his food.

²⁰ His eyes shall see his destruction, and he shall drink of the wrath of the Almighty.

⁹ Hast thou an arm like God? And canst thou thunder with a voice like him?

⁵ With my ears I had heard thee; but now my eyes see thee. ⁶ Therefore, I abhor myself and repent in dust and ashes.

⁷ ¶ Thou, even thou, art to be feared, and who may stand in thy sight when once thou art angry?

¹²⁰ My flesh trembles for fear of thee, and I am afraid of thy judgments.

⁶ ¶ Howl; for the day of the LORD is at hand; it shall come as destruction from the Almighty.

¹⁵ Alas for the day! for the day of the LORD is at hand, and it shall come as a destruction from the Almighty.

¹¹ Therefore being certain of that terror of the Lord, we persuade men; but we are made manifest unto God, and I trust also are made manifest in your consciences.

¹ ¶ And he heard the words of the sons of Laban, saying, Jacob has taken away all that was our father’s; and of that which was our father’s, he has gotten all this glory.

¹² lest peradventure when thou hast eaten and art full and hast built goodly houses and dwelt therein, ¹³ and when thy herds and thy flocks multiply and thy silver and thy gold is multiplied and all that thou hast is multiplied, ¹⁴ then thine heart be lifted up, and thou forget the LORD thy God, who brought thee forth out of the land of Egypt, from the house of slavery,

⁶ ¶ Those that trust in their wealth and boast themselves in the multitude of their riches; ⁷ none of them can by any means ransom his brother, nor give God an atonement for him;

¹⁷ for in his death he shall carry nothing away; nor shall his glory descend after him.

⁷ Behold, this is the man that did not make God his strength, but trusted in the abundance of his riches and strengthened himself in his wickedness.

¹⁰ Trust not in violence and become not vain in the taking of spoil; if riches increase, set not your heart upon them.

¹⁵ ¶ The rich man’s wealth is his strong city; the weakness of the poor is their poverty.

²⁸ ¶ He that trusts in his riches shall fall, but the righteous shall flourish as a branch.

⁹ Lest I be full, and deny thee, and say, Who is the LORD? or lest I be poor, and steal, and blaspheme the name of my God.

²⁴ And the disciples were astonished at his words. But Jesus answered again and said unto them, Children, how hard is it for those that trust in riches to enter into the kingdom of God! ²⁵ It is easier to pass a cable through the eye of a needle than for a rich man to enter into the kingdom of God.

¹⁵ And he said unto them, Take heed and beware of all covetousness; for a man’s life consists not in the abundance of the things which he possesses.

⁵ ¶ Mortify therefore your members which are upon the earth: fornication, uncleanness, inordinate affection, evil lust, and covetousness, which is idolatry;

¹⁰ For the love of money is the root of all evil, which while some coveted after, they have erred from the faith and pierced themselves through with many sorrows.

¹⁷ Charge those that are rich in this world, that they not be highminded, not placing their hope in uncertain riches, but in the living God, who gives us richly all things to enjoy;

¹⁷ and thou say in thy heart, My power and the might of my hand has gotten me this wealth. ¹⁸ But thou shalt remember the LORD thy God, for it is he that gives thee the power to get wealth that he may confirm his covenant which he swore unto thy fathers, as it is this day.

¹¹ And Haman told them of the glory of his riches and the multitude of his sons and all the things in which the king had promoted him and how he had advanced him above the princes and slaves of the king.

⁵ Wilt thou set thine eyes upon riches which are not? For they shall certainly make themselves wings; they shall fly away as an eagle toward heaven.

¹³ For he said, By the strength of my hand I have done it, and by my wisdom; for I have been prudent: and I have removed the boundaries of the peoples, and have robbed their treasures, and I have cast down as valiant ones those who were seated: ¹⁴ And my hand has found as a nest the riches of the peoples: and as one gathers eggs that are left, I have taken control over all the earth; and there was no one that moved the wing, or opened the mouth, or peeped.

²³ ¶ Thus hath the LORD said, Let not the wise man glory in his wisdom, neither let the mighty man glory in his might, let not the rich man glory in his riches;

⁵ by the greatness of thy wisdom in thy trafficking thou hast multiplied thy riches, and thine heart is lifted up because of thy riches:

³⁰ the king spoke and said, Is this not the great Babylon that I have built for the house of the kingdom by the might of my power and for the glory of my greatness?

⁸ And Ephraim said, Surely I have become rich, I have found riches for myself; no one shall find iniquity in me, nor sin in all my labours.

¹⁶ Therefore, he shall sacrifice unto his net and burn incense unto his drag because by them his portion is fat, and his food plenteous.

¹⁹ And I will say to my soul, Soul, thou hast many goods laid up for many years; take thine ease, eat, drink, and be merry.

¹⁹ ¶ There was a certain rich man who was clothed in purple and fine linen and fared sumptuously every day;

²⁵ But Abraham said, Son, remember that thou in thy lifetime didst receive thy good things, and likewise Lazarus evil things; but now he is comforted here, and thou art tormented.

¹⁶ And God made two great lights: the greater light to rule the day, and the lesser light to rule the night; he made the stars also. ¹⁷ And God set them in the firmament of the heavens to give light upon the earth ¹⁸ and to rule over the day and over the night and to divide the light from the darkness; and God saw that it was good.

¹⁹ And lest thou lift up thine eyes unto heaven, and when thou seest the sun and the moon and the stars, even all the host of heaven, and should be driven to worship them and serve them because the LORD thy God has conceded them unto all the peoples under all the heavens.

¹⁶ Keep yourselves, therefore, that your heart not be deceived and ye turn aside and serve other gods and worship them;

³ and has gone and served other gods and worshipped them or the sun or the moon or any of the host of heaven, which I have not commanded,

⁵ And he put down the religious persons whom the kings of Judah had ordained to burn incense in the high places in the cities of Judah and in the places round about Jerusalem; likewise, those that burned incense unto Baal, to the sun and to the moon, and to the planets, and to all the host of heaven.

¹¹ And he took away the horses that the kings of Judah had dedicated to the sun, at the entrance of the house of the LORD, by the chamber of Nathanmelech, the chamberlain who was in charge of the Parbar, and burned the chariots of the sun with fire.

³ ¶ When I consider thy heavens, the work of thy fingers, the moon and the stars, which thou hast ordained; ⁴ what is man, that thou art mindful of him? and the son of man, that thou dost visit him?

² and they shall spread them before the sun and the moon and all the host of heaven, whom they have loved and whom they have served and after whom they have walked and whom they have sought and whom they have worshipped: they shall not be gathered, nor be buried; they shall be for dung upon the face of the earth.

¹⁷ But we will certainly do whatsoever thing goes forth out of our own mouth to burn incense unto the queen of heaven and to pour out drink offerings unto her as we have done, we, and our fathers, our kings, and our princes, in the cities of Judah, and in the streets of Jerusalem; for then had we plenty of victuals, and were well, and saw no evil.

¹⁶ And he brought me into the inner court of the LORD’s house, and, behold, at the entrance of the temple of the LORD, between the porch and the altar, were about twenty-five men with their backs toward the temple of the LORD and their faces toward the east; and they worshipped the sun toward the east.

⁶ ¶ If thy brother, the son of thy mother, or thy son or thy daughter or the wife of thy bosom or thy friend who is as thine own soul should entice thee secretly, saying, Let us go and serve other gods, which thou nor thy fathers have known,

¹⁸ And I will cause seven thousand to remain in Israel, all the knees which have not bowed unto Baal, and every mouth which has not kissed him.

¹² Kiss the Son lest he be angry, and ye perish from the way when his wrath is kindled in a little while. Blessed are all those that put their trust in him.

²⁰ The ashes feed him; his deceived heart inclines him, that he not deliver his soul and say, Is not the lie at my right hand?

² And now they sin more and more, and of their silver they have made molten images according to their own intelligence, idols, all of it the work of the craftsmen; they say of them, Let the men that sacrifice kiss the calves.

²¹ because having known God, they did not glorify him as God, neither were thankful, but became vain in their imaginations, and their foolish heart was darkened.

²⁸ And even as they did not like to retain God in their knowledge, God gave them over to a perverse understanding, to do those things which are not convenient,

²⁵ That be far from thee to do after this manner, to slay the righteous with the wicked and that the righteous should be treated as the wicked that are far from thee. Shall not the Judge of all the earth do right?

² If there is found among you, within any of thy gates which the LORD thy God gives thee, man or woman that has wrought wickedness in the sight of the LORD thy God in transgressing his covenant ³ and has gone and served other gods and worshipped them or the sun or the moon or any of the host of heaven, which I have not commanded, ⁴ and it is told unto thee and thou hast heard of it and enquired diligently, and, behold, it is true, and the thing certain that such abomination is wrought in Israel, ⁵ then shalt thou bring forth that man or that woman who has committed that wicked thing unto thy gates, even that man or that woman, and shalt stone them with stones until they die. ⁶ At the mouth of two witnesses or three witnesses shall he that is worthy of death be put to death, but at the mouth of one witness he shall not be put to death. ⁷ The hands of the witnesses shall be first upon him to put him to death and afterward the hands of all the people. So thou shalt put the evil away from among you.

⁹ and thou shalt come unto the priests, the Levites, and unto the judge that shall be in those days and enquire, and they shall show thee the word of judgment.

²³ Now, therefore, take away, the strange gods which are among you and incline your heart unto the LORD God of Israel.

²⁷ And Joshua said unto all the people, Behold, this stone shall be a witness unto us, for it has heard all the words of the LORD which he spoke unto us: it shall be, therefore, a witness unto you lest ye deny your God.

²⁷ Therefore, I have not sinned against thee, but thou doest me wrong to war against me; let the LORD, who is the Judge, judge this day between the sons of Israel and the sons of Ammon.

¹⁵ Who even though I am righteous, yet I would not answer, but I would make supplication to my judge.

⁷ There the righteous might dispute with him; and should I escape for ever from the one who condemns me.

¹¹ For this is lewdness and iniquity that is proven.

⁶ And the heavens shall declare his righteousness, for God himself is the judge. Selah.

¹⁶ They profess that they know God, but in works they deny him, being abominable and rebellious and reprobate unto every good work.

²³ to the congregation of the called out ones of the firstborn, who are registered in the heavens and to God the Judge of all and to the spirits of just men made perfect

²³ Whosoever denies the Son, the same does not have the Father. Whosoever confesses the Son, has the Father also.

⁴ For there are certain men crept in unawares without fear or reverence of God, who from beforehand have been ordained unto this condemnation, turning the grace of our God into lasciviousness and denying God who alone has dominion, and our Lord Jesus, the Christ.

¹² And they mourned and wept and fasted until evening for Saul and for Jonathan his son and for the people of the LORD, and for the house of Israel because they had fallen by the sword.

¹⁰ when one told me, saying, Behold, Saul is dead, thinking to have brought good tidings, I took hold of him and slew him in Ziklag as a reward for his tidings. ¹¹ How much more unto wicked men who have slain a righteous person in his own house upon his bed? Shall I not, therefore, now require his blood of your hand and remove you from the earth?

⁵ ¶ And when King David came to Bahurim, behold, a man of the family of the house of Saul came forth, whose name was Shimei, the son of Gera; he came forth cursing ⁶ and casting stones at David and at all the slaves of King David; and all the people and all the mighty men were on his right hand and on his left. ⁷ And thus said Shimei when he cursed, Come out, come out, thou bloody man, and thou man of Belial; ⁸ the LORD has returned upon thee all the blood of the house of Saul, in whose stead thou hast reigned; and the LORD has delivered the kingdom into the hand of Absalom, thy son; and, behold, thou art taken in thy evil because thou art a bloody man.

¹³ But as for me, when they were sick, my clothing was sackcloth; I humbled my soul with fasting, and my prayer rose up in my bosom. ¹⁴ I behaved myself as though he had been my friend or brother; I bowed down heavily, as one that mourns for his mother.

²⁵ Let them not say in their hearts, Ah, so would we have it; let them not say, We have swallowed him up. ²⁶ Let them be ashamed and brought to confusion together that rejoice at my hurt; let them be clothed with shame and dishonour that magnify themselves against me.

⁵ ¶ Whosoever mocks the poor reproaches his Maker, and he that is glad regarding the calamity of someone else shall not go unpunished.

¹⁷ ¶ Do not rejoice when thy enemy falls, and do not let thy heart be glad when he stumbles ¹⁸ lest the LORD see it and it displease him, and he turn away his wrath from him.

¹² But thou should not have looked on the day of thy brother in the day that he became a stranger; neither should thou have rejoiced over the sons of Judah in the day they were lost; neither should thou have spoken proudly in the day of distress.

⁴ If thou should encounter thine enemy’s ox or his ass astray, thou shalt surely bring it back to him again. ⁵ If thou see the ass of him that hates thee lying under his burden, will thou forbear to help him? Thou shalt surely help him to raise it up.

² Do not be rash with thy mouth and do not let thy heart be hasty to utter any thing before God, for God is in heaven and thou upon earth; therefore let thy words be few.

⁶ Suffer not thy mouth to cause thy flesh to sin; neither say thou before the angel, that it was ignorance. Why should thou cause God to be angry because of thy voice and destroy the work of thine hands?

²² but I say unto you, That whosoever is angry with his brother out of control shall be in danger of the judgment, and whosoever shall insult his brother shall be in danger of the council, but whosoever shall say, Thou art impious, shall be in danger of hell.

⁴³ ¶ Ye have heard that it was said, Thou shalt love thy neighbour, and hate thine enemy. ⁴⁴ But I say unto you, Love your enemies, bless those that curse you, do good to those that hate you, and pray for those who speak evil about you, and persecute you;

³⁶ But I say unto you, That every idle word that men shall speak, they shall give account thereof in the day of judgment.

¹⁴ Bless those who persecute you: bless, and do not curse.

⁶ And the tongue is a fire, a world of iniquity: so is the tongue among our members, that it defiles the whole body and sets on fire the course of our nature; and it is set on fire of hell.

⁹ With it we bless God, even the Father; and with it we curse men, who are made in the image of God. ¹⁰ Out of the same mouth proceeds blessing and cursing. My brethren, these things ought not to be so.

²² who did no sin neither was guile found in his mouth, ²³ who, when he was cursed, did not return the curse; when he suffered, he did not threaten, but committed himself to him that judges righteously;

⁹ not rendering evil for evil or curse for curse, but to the contrary, blessing, knowing that ye are called, that ye should possess a blessing by inheritance.

⁴ Then the men of David said unto him, Behold the day of which the LORD said unto thee, Behold, I will deliver thy enemy into thy hand that thou may do to him as it shall seem good unto thee. Then David arose and silently cut off the skirt of Saul’s robe.

¹⁰ Behold, this day thine eyes have seen how that the LORD had delivered thee today into my hand in the cave, and some bade me kill thee, but I forgave thee, and I said, I will not put forth my hand against my lord, for he is the LORD’s anointed.

⁸ Then Abishai said to David, God has delivered thy enemy into thy hand today; now, therefore, let me smite him, I pray thee, with the spear and pin him to the earth at once, and I will not need a second opportunity.

⁹ Then Abishai, the son of Zeruiah, said unto the king, Why should this dead dog curse, my lord the king? Let me go over, I pray thee, and take off his head. ¹⁰ And the king said, What have I to do with you, ye sons of Zeruiah? So let him curse, because the LORD has said unto him, Curse David. Who shall then say, Why hast thou done so?

²¹ But Abishai, the son of Zeruiah, answered and said, Shall not Shimei be put to death for this because he cursed the LORD’s anointed? ²² Then David said, What have I to do with you, ye sons of Zeruiah, that ye should this day be adversaries unto me? Shall anyone be put to death today in Israel? Do I not know that I am this day king over Israel?

²² Why do ye persecute me as God and are not satisfied with my flesh?

² When the wicked, even my enemies and my foes, came upon me to eat up my flesh, they stumbled and fell.

²⁵ Let them not say in their hearts, Ah, so would we have it; let them not say, We have swallowed him up.

¹¹ If they say, Come with us, let us lay in wait for blood; let us ambush the innocent without cause. ¹² Let us swallow them up alive as Sheol and whole as those that go down into the pit;

¹⁸ And they lay in wait for their own blood; they ambush their own souls.

¹⁵ Then Johanan the son of Kareah spoke to Gedaliah in Mizpah secretly, saying, I will go now, and I will slay Ishmael the son of Nethaniah, and no man shall know it; why should he slay thee, that all the Jews which are gathered unto thee should be scattered and the remnant in Judah perish? ¹⁶ But Gedaliah the son of Ahikam said unto Johanan the son of Kareah, Thou shalt not do this thing, for thou dost speak falsely of Ishmael.

² Who hate the good, and love the evil, who steal their skin from off them, and their flesh from off their bones; ³ and eat the flesh of my people, and flay their skin from off them; and they break their bones and chop them in pieces as for the pot and as flesh within the caldron.

⁵⁴ And when his disciples James and John saw this, they said, Lord, wilt thou that we command fire to come down from heaven and consume them, even as Elijah did? ⁵⁵ But he turned and rebuked them and said, Ye know not what manner of spirit ye are of.

⁵⁰ And one of them smote the slave of the prince of the priests and cut off his right ear. ⁵¹ And Jesus answered and said, Suffer ye thus far. And he touched his ear and healed him.

² and he said, Behold now, my lords, turn in, I pray you, into your slave’s house and tarry all night and wash your feet, and ye shall rise up early and go on your ways. And they said, No, but we will abide in the street all night. ³ And he pressed upon them greatly, and they turned in unto him and entered into his house, and he made them a banquet and baked unleavened bread, and they ate.

¹⁵ And they turned in there, to enter and to lodge in Gibeah; and entering in, they sat down in the plaza of the city, for no one took them into their house to pass the night.

²⁰ And the old man said, Peace be with thee; let all thy needs be upon me; only do not pass the night in the plaza. ²¹ So he brought him into his house and gave fodder unto the asses, and they washed their feet, and ate and drank.

¹⁷ or have eaten my morsel alone and the fatherless has not eaten thereof; ¹⁸ (for from my youth the fatherless was brought up with me, as with a father, and I have guided the widow from my mother’s womb)

³⁵ for I was hungry, and ye gave me food; I was thirsty, and ye gave me drink; I was a stranger, and ye took me in;

⁴⁰ And the King shall answer and say unto them, Verily I say unto you, Inasmuch as ye have done it unto one of the least of these my brothers, ye have done it unto me.

⁴⁴ Then they shall also answer him, saying, Lord, when did we see thee hungry or thirsty or a stranger or naked or sick or in prison and did not minister unto thee? ⁴⁵ Then he shall answer them, saying, Verily I say unto you, Inasmuch as ye did it not to one of the least of my brothers, ye did it not to me.

¹⁰ having a good testimony of good works, if she has brought up well her children, if she has exercised hospitality, if she has washed the feet of the saints, if she has relieved the afflicted, if she has diligently followed every good work.

² Do not forget to show hospitality; for thereby some, having entertained angels, were kept.

⁹ Lovingly be hospitable one to another without murmuring.

⁷ And the eyes of them both were opened, and they knew that they were naked; so they sewed fig leaves together and made themselves girdles. ⁸ And they heard the voice of the LORD God walking in the garden in the cool of the day, and the man and his wife hid themselves from the presence of the LORD God among the trees of the garden.

¹² And the man said, The woman whom thou gavest to be with me, she gave me of the tree, and I ate.

¹¹ Israel has sinned and has even transgressed my covenant which I commanded them; for they have even taken of the anathema and have also stolen and lied also, and they have even put it in their own vessels.

¹³ ¶ He that covers his sins shall not prosper, but whosoever confesses and forsakes them shall attain mercy.

⁷ But they have transposed the covenant as of men: there they have rebelled against me.

⁸ Then Peter answered unto her, Tell me whether ye sold the land for so much? And she said, Yes, for so much.

⁸ ¶ If we say that we have no sin, we deceive ourselves, and there is no truth in us. ⁹ If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness. ¹⁰ If we say that we have not sinned, we make him a liar, and his word is not in us.

² Thou shalt not follow a multitude to do evil; neither shalt thou speak in a cause hiding behind many to wrest judgment;

²⁷ And he said unto them, Thus hath the LORD God of Israel said, Put every man his sword by his side and go in and out from gate to gate throughout the camp and slay each one his brother and his companion and his neighbour.

¹⁴ Now the name of the Israelite that was slain, even that was slain with the Midianite, was Zimri, the son of Salu, a prince of a family of the tribe of Simeon. ¹⁵ And the name of the Midianite woman that was slain was Cozbi, the daughter of Zur, prince of peoples, of the house of the father, in Midian.

⁷ Then I meditated unto myself, and I rebuked the principals and the rulers and said unto them, Does each one of you exact usury of his brother? And I set a great assembly against them.

⁴ And before this, Eliashib, the priest, had been the overseer of the chamber of the house of our God, and was related to Tobiah, ⁵ and he had prepared for him a great chamber, where before they had kept the present, the frankincense, the vessels, the tithe of the grain, of the new wine, and of the oil, which was commanded to be given to the Levites, to the singers and the porters and the offerings of the priests. ⁶ But in all this time I was not at Jerusalem; for in the thirty-second year of Artaxerxes, king of Babylon, I went unto the king, and after certain days I was sent by the king. ⁷ And I came to Jerusalem and understood the evil that Eliashib had done attending Tobiah, in preparing him a chamber in the courts of the house of God. ⁸ And it grieved me sore; therefore, I cast forth all the household vessels of Tobiah out of the chamber.

²⁸ And one of the sons of Joiada, the son of Eliashib, the high priest, was son-in-law to Sanballat the Horonite; therefore, I chased him from me.

¹¹ All the king’s slaves and the people of the king’s provinces do know that anyone, whether man or woman, who shall come unto the king into the inner court without being called, by one law shall be put to death, unless the king shall hold out the golden sceptre, that they may live; but I have not been called to come in unto the king these thirty days.

¹⁴ For if thou art silent at this time, then enlargement and deliverance shall arise to the Jews from another place, but thou and thy father’s house shall be destroyed; and who knows whether thou art come to the kingdom for such a time as this?

⁸ But the man of means had the earth; and the honourable man dwelt in it.

¹¹ ¶ If thou forbear to deliver those that are drawn unto death and those that are ready to be slain, ¹² if thou should say, Behold, we knew it not; shall not he that weighs the hearts understand it? and he that keeps thy soul, does he not know it? and shall he not render to every man according to his works?

²⁵ ¶ The fear of man brings a snare, but whosoever puts his trust in the LORD shall be lifted up.

⁴ Therefore the princes said unto the king, We beseech thee, let this man be put to death: for thus he weakens the hands of the men of war that remain in this city and the hands of all the people, in speaking such words unto them; for this man does not seek the peace of this people, but the hurt. ⁵ Then Zedekiah the king said, Behold, he is in your hand, for the king can not do any thing against you.

¹⁶ So Zedekiah the king swore secretly unto Jeremiah, saying, As the LORD lives, that made us this soul, I will not put thee to death, neither will I give thee into the hand of these men that seek thy life.

¹⁹ And Zedekiah the king said unto Jeremiah, I am afraid of the Jews that are fallen to the Chaldeans, lest they deliver me into their hand, and they mock me.

¹¹ Forasmuch therefore as your treading is upon the poor, and ye take from him burdens of wheat, ye have built houses of hewn stone, but ye shall not dwell in them; ye have planted pleasant vineyards, but ye shall not drink wine of them. ¹² For I have known of your many rebellions and your great sins that afflict the just and take a ransom and turn aside the poor in the gate from their right. ¹³ Therefore the prudent shall keep silence in that time, for it is an evil time.

²⁰ But the princes of the priests and the elders persuaded the multitude that they should ask for Barabbas and destroy Jesus. ²¹ The governor answered and said unto them, Which of the two desire ye that I release unto you? They said, Barabbas. ²² Pilate said unto them, What shall I do then with Jesus who is called Christ? They all say unto him, Let him be crucified. ²³ And the governor said, Why, what evil has he done? But they cried out the more, saying, Let him be crucified. ²⁴ When Pilate saw that he could prevail nothing, but that rather a tumult was made, he took water and washed his hands before the multitude, saying, I am innocent of the blood of this just person; see ye to it. ²⁵ Then all the people answered and said, His blood be on us and on our children. ²⁶ ¶ Then he released Barabbas unto them; and when he had scourged Jesus, he delivered him to be crucified.

¹⁶ ¶ Therefore from now on we know no one according to the flesh: and even if we have known Christ according to the flesh, yet now we know him no longer.

³ But I would speak with the Almighty, and I desired to dispute with God.

²¹ withdraw thy hand from me; and let not thy dread make me afraid. ²² Then call, and I will answer; or let me speak, and answer thou me.

²⁴ Why dost thou hide thy face, and hold me for thine enemy?

³ Put up now, give me surety with thee; who is he that will strike hands with me?

⁷ Behold, I shall cry out that I have been wronged, and I shall not be heard; I shall cry aloud, and there shall be no judgment.

¹¹ He has kindled his wrath against me, and he counted me unto him as one of his enemies.

²³ ¶ Oh, that my words were now written! Oh, that they were printed in a book! ²⁴ That they were graven with an iron pen and lead in the rock for ever!

³ Oh, that I knew where I might find him! That I might come even to his seat! ⁴ I would order judgment before him and fill my mouth with arguments. ⁵ I would know the words which he would answer me and understand what he would say unto me. ⁶ Will he plead against me with his great power? No, but rather he would put it in me. ⁷ There the righteous might dispute with him; and should I escape for ever from the one who condemns me.

⁷ ¶ Let my enemy be as the wicked and my adversary as the unrighteous.

²⁸ I went about darkened, but not by the sun; I stood up and cried out in the congregation.

⁶ Behold, I am according to thy wish in God’s stead; I also am formed out of the clay.

¹⁰ Behold, God sought occasions against me, he counts me for his enemy, ¹¹ he put my feet in the stocks, he guards all my paths.

¹⁴ ¶ For much that thou dost say, he will not look upon it, submit to judgment before him, and trust thou in him.

¹ ¶ Then the LORD answered Job out of the whirlwind and said, ² Who is this that darkens counsel by words without knowledge? ³ Now gird up thy loins like a man; for I will enquire of thee, and answer thou me.

⁴ Behold, I am vile; what shall I answer thee? I will lay my hand over my mouth. ⁵ Once I have spoken; but I will not answer; even twice, but I will proceed no further.

²⁵ Conciliate with thine adversary quickly, whiles thou art in the way with him; lest at any time the adversary deliver thee to the judge, and the judge deliver thee to the officer, and thou be cast into prison.

¹² And thou shalt put the two stones upon the shoulders of the ephod for stones of memorial unto the sons of Israel, and Aaron shall bear their names before the LORD upon his two shoulders for a memorial.

¹⁴ I put on righteousness, and it clothed me as a robe; and my diadem was judgment.

²² And the key of the house of David I will lay upon his shoulder; so he shall open, and no one shall shut; and he shall shut, and no one shall open.

³ Thou shalt also be a crown of glory in the hand of the LORD and a royal diadem in the hand of thy God.

¹ ¶ Therefore, my brethren dearly beloved and longed for, my joy and crown, so stand fast in the Lord, my dearly beloved.

²⁸ And he said, Thy name shall no longer be called Jacob, but Israel; for thou hast fought with God and with men, and hast prevailed.

³ His substance was seven thousand sheep, three thousand camels, five hundred yoke of oxen, five hundred she asses, and a very great store of servants, so that this man was the greatest of all the men of the east.

³ If he desires to contend with him, he will not be able to answer him one thing of a thousand.

¹⁵ Though he slay me, yet I will trust in him; but I will defend my ways before him.

²⁵ I approved their way and sat at the head and dwelt as a king in the army, as one that comforts the mourners.

³ Who is he that hides counsel without knowledge? Therefore, I have denounced that which I did not understand, things too wonderful for me, which I did not know. ⁴ Hear, now, and I will speak; I will ask of thee, and thou shalt cause me to know.

¹² Who can understand his errors? cleanse thou me from secret faults.

¹² In whom we have security and access with confidence by the faith of him.

¹⁵ For we do not have a high priest who cannot sympathize with our weaknesses, but was in all points tempted like as we are, yet without sin. ¹⁶ Let us, therefore, come boldly unto the throne of his grace, that we may obtain mercy and find grace to help in time of need.

¹⁹ And in this we know that we are of the truth and have our hearts certified before him. ²⁰ ¶ And if our heart condemns us, God is greater than our heart and knows all things. ²¹ Beloved, if our heart does not condemn us, then we have confidence in God;

²⁷ The heavens shall reveal his iniquity; and the earth shall rise up against him.

¹³ The plains clothe themselves with sheep, and the valleys cover themselves with grain; they give shouts of triumph, they even sing.

¹¹ For the stone shall cry out from the wall, and the beam out of the timber shall answer it.

⁴ Behold, the hire of the labourers who have reaped your fields (which you have kept back by fraud) cries out; and the cries of those who have reaped have entered into the ears of the Lord of the hosts.

¹² when thou tillest the ground, from now on it shall not yield unto thee her strength; a fugitive and a vagabond shalt thou be in the earth.

¹³ Then the two men, sons of Belial, came in and sat before him; and those men of Belial witnessed against Naboth, in the presence of the people, saying, Naboth blasphemed God and the king. Then they carried him forth out of the city, and stoned him with stones that he died. ¹⁴ Then they sent to Jezebel, saying, Naboth has been stoned and is dead. ¹⁵ And it came to pass when Jezebel heard that Naboth had been stoned and was dead that she said to Ahab, Arise, take possession of the vineyard of Naboth of Jezreel which he refused to give thee for money, for Naboth is not alive, but dead. ¹⁶ And it came to pass when Ahab heard that Naboth was dead, that Ahab rose up to go down to the vineyard of Naboth of Jezreel, to take possession of it.

¹⁹ And thou shalt speak unto him, saying, Thus hath the LORD said, Hast thou murdered and also taken possession? And thou shalt speak unto him again, saying, Thus hath the LORD said, In the same place where dogs licked the blood of Naboth shall the dogs also lick thy blood, even thine.

¹⁹ So are the ways of every one that is greedy of gain which takes away the life of those who possess it.

²¹ For, behold, the LORD comes out of his place to visit the iniquity of the inhabitant of the earth against himself: the earth also shall disclose her blood and shall no longer cover her slain.

⁶ Behold, the princes of Israel, each one according to their power, were in thee to shed blood.

¹² In thee they have taken bribes to shed blood; thou hast taken usury and increase, and thou hast greedily gained of thy neighbours by extortion and hast forgotten me, said the Lord GOD. ¹³ Behold, therefore I have smitten my hand at thy dishonest gain which thou hast made and at thy blood which has been in the midst of thee.

¹⁷ ¶ And unto Adam he said, Because thou hast hearkened unto the voice of thy wife and hast eaten of the tree of which I commanded thee, saying, Thou shalt not eat of it, cursed shall be the ground for thy sake; in sorrow shalt thou eat of it all the days of thy life; ¹⁸ thorns also and thistles shall it bring forth to thee; and thou shalt eat the grass of the field;

²⁰ The prayers of David the son of Jesse are ended.

²³ And it shall come to pass in that day that in the place where there were a thousand vines that were worth a thousand shekels of silver, it shall even be for the briers and for the thorns.

⁹ Therefore as I live, said the LORD of the hosts, the God of Israel, Surely Moab shall be as Sodom and the sons of Ammon as Gomorrah, even a field of nettles and saltpits and a perpetual desolation; the remnant of my people shall spoil them, and the remnant of my Gentiles shall inherit them.

³ and I rejected Esau and laid his mountains and his heritage waste for the dragons of the wilderness.
