¹ ¶ Knowest thou the time when the mountain goats bring forth? Hast thou observed when the hinds calve? ² Canst thou number the months that they fulfil, and knowest thou the time when they bring forth? ³ How they crouch down, they bring forth their young ones, and dismiss their pain. ⁴ Their young ones are healthy, they grow up with grain; they go forth and never return unto them again. ⁵ Who freed the wild ass, and who loosed its bands? ⁶ Unto whom I made a house in the wilderness, and his dwellings in the salty land. ⁷ He laughs at the multitude of the city, neither does he hearken to the voice of the exactor of tribute. ⁸ The range of the mountains is his pasture, and he searches after every green thing. ⁹ Will the unicorn be willing to serve thee or abide by thy crib? ¹⁰ Canst thou bind the unicorn with his band in the furrow? Will he harrow the valleys after thee? ¹¹ Wilt thou trust him because his strength is great? Or wilt thou leave thy labour to him? ¹² Wilt thou trust him, that he will bring home thy seed and gather it into thy barn? ¹³ ¶ Didst thou give beautiful wings unto the peacock, or wings and feathers unto the ostrich? ¹⁴ Who leaves her eggs in the earth and warms them in dust ¹⁵ and forgets that the foot may crush them or that the wild beast may break them. ¹⁶ She is hardened against her young ones, as though they were not hers, not fearing that her labour is in vain, ¹⁷ because God caused her to forget wisdom and did not give her understanding. ¹⁸ In her time she lifts up herself on high; she scorns the horse and his rider. ¹⁹ ¶ Hast thou given the horse strength? Hast thou clothed his neck with thunder? ²⁰ Canst thou make him leap as a grasshopper? The glory of his nostrils is formidable. ²¹ He paws at the earth and rejoices in his strength; he goes forth to meet the armed men. ²² He mocks fear and is not afraid; neither does he turn his face from the sword. ²³ The quiver rattles against him, the glittering spear and the shield. ²⁴ He swallows the ground with fierceness and rage; the sound of the shofar does not trouble him; ²⁵ for the blasts of the shofar fill him with courage; he smells the battle afar off, the thunder of the princes and the sound of the battle-cry. ²⁶ ¶ Does the hawk fly by thy industry and stretch her wings toward the south? ²⁷ Does the eagle mount up at thy command and make her nest on high? ²⁸ She dwells and abides on the rock upon the crag of the rock and the strong place. ²⁹ From there she seeks food, and her eyes behold afar off. ³⁰ Her young ones suck up the blood; and wherever the slain are, there she is.

²¹ and he was driven from among the sons of men; and his heart was put with the beasts, and his dwelling was with the wild asses: they made him eat grass like an ox, and his body was bathed with the dew of heaven until he understood that the most high God takes rule of the kingdom of men and that he appoints over it whomever he will.

⁹ For they are gone up to Assyria, a wild ass thinking only of himself; Ephraim has hired lovers.

²³ and that the whole land thereof is brimstone and salt and burning, that it is not sown, nor shall it produce anything, nor shall any grass grow therein, like in the overthrow of Sodom and Gomorrah, Admah, and Zeboim, which the LORD overthrew in his anger and in his wrath;

³⁴ the fruitful land into salt flats, because of the wickedness of those that dwell therein.

⁶ For he shall be like the heath in the desert and shall not see when good comes, but shall inhabit the parched places in the wilderness, in a salt land and not inhabited.

¹¹ But the miry places thereof and the marshes thereof shall not be healed; they shall be given to salt.

¹³ And the taskmasters hasted them, saying, Fulfil your works, your daily quotas, as when there was firewood. ¹⁴ And the officers of the sons of Israel, whom Pharaoh’s taskmasters had set over them, were beaten, and they demanded, Why have ye not fulfilled your quotas in making brick both yesterday and today, as until now? ¹⁵ ¶ Then the officers of the sons of Israel came and cried unto Pharaoh, saying, Why doest thou deal thus with thy slaves? ¹⁶ There is no firewood given unto thy slaves, yet they say to us, Make brick. Behold, thy slaves are beaten; and thy people sin.

¹⁸ Go therefore now and work, for no firewood shall be given you, yet ye shall deliver the tally of bricks.

¹⁸ There the prisoners rest together, they do not hear the voice of the oppressor.

¹⁸ In her time she lifts up herself on high; she scorns the horse and his rider.

⁴ For thus has the LORD spoken unto me, Like the lion and the young lion roaring on his prey, even if a multitude of shepherds come forth against him, he will not be afraid of their voices, nor abase himself for the noise of them: so shall the LORD of the hosts come down to fight for Mount Zion and for his hill.

³ ¶ Why have we fasted, they say, and thou dost not see? why have we afflicted our soul, and thou dost take no knowledge? Behold, in the day of your fast ye find your own pleasure and exact your own estates.

²⁹ ¶ And God said, Behold, I have given you every grass bearing seed, which is upon the face of all the earth, and every tree, in which is the fruit of a tree yielding seed; to you it shall be for food. ³⁰ And to every beast of the earth and to every fowl of the air and to every thing that moves upon the earth, in which there is a living soul, I have given all green grass for food; and it was so.

¹⁵ ¶ Behold now behemoth, which I made with thee; he eats grass as an ox.

²⁰ Surely the mountains bring him forth food, where all the beasts of the field play. ²¹ He shall lie down under the shade, in the covert of the reeds and of the damp places. ²² The shady trees cover him with their shadow; the willows of the brook compass him about.

²⁷ These wait all upon thee, that thou may give them their food in due season. ²⁸ Thou givest unto them, they gather; thou openest thine hand, they are filled with good.

¹⁵ Ain The eyes of all wait upon thee, and thou givest them their food in due season. ¹⁶ Pe Thou dost open thine hand and satisfy the desire of every living thing.

¹³ O thou inhabitant of Lachish, hitch the chariot to dromedaries: for thou wert the beginning of the sin to the daughter of Zion, for in thee the rebellions of Israel were invented.

²⁶ ¶ And God said, Let us make man in our image, after our likeness; and let them have dominion over the fish of the sea and over the fowl of the air and over the beasts and over all the earth and over every serpent that moves upon the earth.

²⁸ And God blessed them, and God said unto them, Be fruitful and multiply and fill the earth and subdue it and have dominion over the fish of the sea and over the fowl of the air and over every beast that moves upon the earth.

² And the fear of you and the dread of you shall be upon every animal of the earth and upon every fowl of the heavens, upon all that moves upon the earth and upon all the fishes of the sea; into your hand they are delivered.

²⁶ And they laded their asses with the wheat and departed from there.

⁷ Some trust in chariots and some in horses, but we will remember the name of the LORD our God.

¹⁶ The king is not saved by the multitude of the army; the mighty man does not escape by much strength. ¹⁷ A horse is a vain thing for salvation; neither shall he deliver any by his great strength.

¹⁴ that our oxen may be strong to labour; that there be no breaking in nor going out; that there be no shout of alarm in our streets.

¹⁰ He does not delight in the strength of the horse; nor does he take pleasure in the legs of a man.

⁴ ¶ Without oxen, the storehouse is clean, but by the strength of the ox there is abundance of bread.

⁶ The burden of the beasts of the south: into the land of trouble and anguish, from whence come the young and old lion, the viper and fiery flying serpent; they will carry their riches upon the shoulders of young asses and their treasures upon the bunches of camels, to a people that shall not profit them.

¹⁶ But ye said, No; for we will flee upon horses; therefore shall ye flee: and, We will ride upon the swift; therefore shall they that pursue you be even more swift.

¹ ¶ Woe to those that go down to Egypt for help; and trust in horses and place their hope in chariots because they are many and in horsemen, because they are valiant, but they did not look unto the Holy One of Israel, neither did they seek the LORD! ² Yet he also is wise to guide evil and will not cause his words to lie but will arise against the house of the evildoers and against the help of those that work iniquity. ³ Now the Egyptian is a man, and not God, and his horses flesh, and not spirit, so that as the LORD shall stretch out his hand, both he that helps shall fall, and he that is helped shall fall down, and they shall all fail together.

¹ ¶ Bel bowed down; Nebo is fallen; their images were placed upon animals and upon beasts of burden that will carry you, laden with yourselves, burden of weariness.

¹⁵ ¶ In those days I saw in Judah some treading wine presses on the sabbath and bringing in sheaves and lading asses with wine, grapes, figs, and all manner of burdens, which they brought into Jerusalem on the sabbath day; and I protested unto them the day in which they sold the food.

²² For the king had at sea a navy of Tarshish with the navy of Hiram; once every three years the navy of Tarshish came, bringing gold, silver, ivory, and apes, and peacocks.

But the other said, Let it be neither mine nor thine, but divide it. ²⁷ Then the king answered and said, Give her the living child, and in no wise slay it, for she is its mother.

²⁸ And the king said unto her, What ails thee? And she answered, This woman said unto me, Give thy son that we may eat him today, and we will eat my son tomorrow. ²⁹ So we boiled my son and ate him. And I said unto her on the next day, Give thy son that we may eat him. But she has hid her son.

¹⁵ The labour of the foolish wearies all of them because they do not know how to go to the city.

²⁰ Resh Look, O LORD, and consider unto whom thou hast shaken thus. Shall the women eat their fruit, the little ones that they are bringing up? shall the priest and the prophet be slain in the sanctuary of the Lord?

³ Gimel Even the sea monsters draw out the breast; they give suck to their young ones; the daughter of my people is cruel like the ostriches in the wilderness.

¹³ Is this not of the LORD of the hosts? Therefore the peoples shall labour for the fire, and the Gentiles shall weary themselves in vain.

³¹ without understanding, covenant breakers, without natural affection, implacable, without mercy.

³⁰ But Sihon, king of Heshbon, would not let us pass by him, for the LORD thy God had hardened his spirit and made his heart obstinate that he might deliver him into thy hand as until this day.

³¹ However, because of the ambassadors {Heb. scorners} of the princes of Babylon, who sent unto him to enquire of the wonder that had happened in the land, God left him, to try him, that he might know all that was in his heart.

⁴ For with these, thou hast hid their heart from understanding; therefore, thou shalt not exalt them.

¹¹ who teaches us more than the beasts of the earth and makes us wiser than the fowls of heaven?

¹¹ Surely the princes of Zoan are fools; the counsel of the prudent counsellors of Pharaoh is become carnal; how say ye unto Pharaoh, I am the son of the wise, the son of the ancient kings? ¹² Where are they? Where are thy wise men? Let them tell thee now, or let them cause thee to know what the LORD of the hosts has purposed upon Egypt. ¹³ The princes of Zoan are become fools, the princes of Noph are deceived; they have also seduced Egypt, even those that are the stay of the tribes thereof. ¹⁴ The LORD has mingled a perverse spirit in its midst, and they have caused Egypt to err in every work thereof, as a drunken man staggers in his vomit.

¹⁷ ¶ For the iniquity of his covetousness I was wroth and smote him: I hid my face and was wroth, and he went on rebelliously in the way of his heart.

¹⁷ Every good gift and every perfect gift is from above and comes down from the Father of lights, with whom is no variableness neither shadow of turning.

²¹ This is the word that the LORD has spoken concerning him: Has he despised thee? Has he laughed thee to scorn, O virgin daughter of Zion? He has moved his head behind thy back, O daughter of Jerusalem.

²² At destruction and famine thou shalt laugh; neither shalt thou be afraid of the beasts of the earth;

²⁹ He counts any weapon as stubble; he laughs at the shaking of a spear.

¹ ¶ Then Moses and the sons of Israel sang this song unto the LORD and spoke, saying, I will sing unto the LORD, for he has triumphed gloriously; the horse and his rider he has thrown into the sea.

Choose a man from among you, and let him come down to me. ⁹ If he is able to fight with me and to overcome me, then will we be your slaves, but if I prevail against him and overcome him, then ye shall be our slaves and serve us. ¹⁰ And the Philistine said, I have dishonoured the ranks of Israel today; give me a man that we may fight together.

⁴² And when the Philistine looked about and saw David, he disdained him, for he was but a youth and ruddy and of a fair countenance.

⁵ which is as a bridegroom coming out of his chamber and rejoices as a strong man to run a race.

³¹ The horse is prepared against the day of battle, but salvation is of the LORD.

⁶ I hearkened and heard, but they did not speak aright: there was no man that repented of his wickedness, saying, What have I done? each one returned to his course as the horse rushes into the battle.

²³ ¶ Thus hath the LORD said, Let not the wise man glory in his wisdom, neither let the mighty man glory in his might, let not the rich man glory in his riches;

¹⁶ She is hardened against her young ones, as though they were not hers, not fearing that her labour is in vain,

³³ Upon earth there is not his like, who behaves without fear.

²⁶ When one catches up to him, no sword or spear or dart or coat of mail shall endure against him. ²⁷ He esteems iron as straw and bronze as rotten wood. ²⁸ The arrow cannot make him flee; with him, slingstones are turned into stubble. ²⁹ He counts any weapon as stubble; he laughs at the shaking of a spear.

¹⁶ Who if I were to invoke him, and he answered me; yet I would not believe that he had hearkened unto my voice.

²⁴ If I laughed at them, they did not believe it; and they did not cast down the light of my countenance.

²⁰ Shall it be told him when I speak? When someone is swallowed up shall it be told him?

¹⁹ ¶ My bowels, my bowels! I am pained at my very heart; my heart makes a noise in me; I cannot hold my peace because thou hast heard, O my soul, the sound of the shofar, the alarm of war.

⁶ Shall the shofar be blown in the city and the people not be afraid? Shall there be any evil in the city which the LORD has not done?

⁸ Their horses shall be swifter than tigers and are sharper than the evening wolves, and their horsemen shall multiply themselves, and their horsemen shall come from far; they shall fly as eagles that hasten to eat. ⁹ All of her shall come for the prey, before their faces an east wind, and they shall gather the captives as the sand.

⁴¹ And as they were not believing him yet for joy and wondering, he said unto them, Have ye here any food?

³ Let them be turned back for a reward of their shame that say, Aha, aha.

² Son of man, because Tyre has said concerning Jerusalem, Aha, it is well that she is broken who is the gate of the peoples; she is turned unto me; I shall be filled; and she shall be deserted:

² Thus hath the Lord GOD said: Because the enemy hath said regarding you, Aha, even the ancient high places are ours in possession;

⁵ who satisfies thy mouth with good things so that thy youth is renewed like the eagle’s.

⁵ Wilt thou set thine eyes upon riches which are not? For they shall certainly make themselves wings; they shall fly away as an eagle toward heaven.

³¹ but those that wait for the LORD shall have new strength; they shall mount up with wings as eagles; they shall run and not be weary; and they shall walk, and not faint.

¹⁶ Thy arrogance has deceived thee, and the pride of thine heart, O thou that dost dwell in the clefts of the rock, that dost hold the height of the mountain: though thou should make thy nest as high as the eagle, I will bring thee down from there, said the LORD.

¹ ¶ Set the shofar to thy mouth. He shall come as an eagle against the house of the LORD because they have transgressed my covenant and rebelled against my law.

⁴ Though thou exalt thyself as the eagle and though thou set thy nest among the stars, from there I will bring thee down, said the LORD.

⁴ And between the passages by which Jonathan sought to go over unto the Philistines’ garrison, there was a sharp rock on the one side and a sharp rock on the other side; and the name of the one was Bozez and the name of the other Seneh.

³⁷ And they answered and said unto him, Where, Lord? And he said unto them, Where the body is, there will the eagles be gathered together.
