⁴⁰ And some of the Pharisees who were with him heard these words and said unto him, Are we blind also?

¹² Then his disciples came and said unto him, Knowest thou that the Pharisees were offended when they heard this word? ¹³ But he answered and said, Every plant which my heavenly Father has not planted shall be rooted up. ¹⁴ Let them alone; they are blind leaders of the blind. And if the blind lead the blind, both shall fall into a pit.

¹⁶ Woe unto you, ye blind guides, who say, Whosoever shall swear by the temple, it is nothing; but whosoever shall swear by the gold of the temple, he is a debtor! ¹⁷ Ye fools and blind, for which is greater, the gold or the temple that sanctifies the gold? ¹⁸ And, Whosoever shall swear by the altar, it is nothing; but whosoever swears by the gift that is upon it, he is a debtor. ¹⁹ Ye fools and blind, for which one is greater, the gift or the altar that sanctifies the gift? ²⁰ Whosoever therefore shall swear by the altar, swears by it and by all things thereon. ²¹ And whosoever shall swear by the temple, swears by it and by Him that dwells therein. ²² And he that shall swear by the heaven, swears by the throne of God and by Him that sits thereon. ²³ Woe unto you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! for ye pay tithe of mint and anise and cummin and have omitted that which is more important of the law: judgment, mercy, and faith; these were expedient for ye to have done, and not to leave the other undone. ²⁴ Ye blind guides, who strain at a gnat and swallow a camel. ²⁵ Woe unto you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! for ye make clean the outside of the cup or of the platter, but within they are full of extortion and incontinence. ²⁶ Thou blind Pharisee, cleanse first that which is within the cup and platter that the outside of them may be clean also. ²⁷ Woe unto you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! for ye are like unto whitewashed sepulchres, who indeed appear beautiful outside, but inside are full of dead men’s bones and of all uncleanness. ²⁸ Even so ye also outwardly appear righteous unto men, but within ye are full of hypocrisy and iniquity.

³⁹ And the Lord said unto him, Now do ye Pharisees make clean the outside of the cup and the platter; but your inward part is full of ravening and wickedness. ⁴⁰ Ye fools, did not he that made that which is without make that which is within also? ⁴¹ But rather give alms {lit. do acts of mercy} of such things as ye have; and, behold, all things are clean unto you. ⁴² But woe unto you, Pharisees! for ye tithe mint and rue and all manner of herbs and pass over the judgment and the charity of God; these ought ye to have done, and not to leave the other undone. ⁴³ Woe unto you, Pharisees! for ye love the first seats in the synagogues and greetings in the markets. ⁴⁴ Woe unto you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! for ye are as graves which are not seen, and the men that walk over them are not aware of them. ⁴⁵ Then one of the lawyers answered and said unto him, Master, saying these things, thou dost reproach us also. ⁴⁶ And he said, Woe unto you also, ye lawyers! for ye burden men with burdens grievous to be borne, and ye yourselves touch not the burdens with one of your fingers. ⁴⁷ Woe unto you! for ye build the sepulchres of the prophets, and your fathers killed them. ⁴⁸ Truly ye bear witness that ye allow the deeds of your fathers: for they indeed killed them, and ye build their sepulchres. ⁴⁹ Therefore also said the wisdom of God, I will send them prophets and apostles, and some of them they shall slay and others they shall persecute: ⁵⁰ that the blood of all the prophets which was shed from the foundation of the world may be required of this generation, ⁵¹ from the blood of Abel unto the blood of Zacharias, who perished between the altar and the temple; verily I say unto you, It shall be required of this generation. ⁵² Woe unto you, lawyers! for ye have taken the key of knowledge: ye entered not in yourselves, and those that were entering in, ye hindered. ⁵³ And as he said these things unto them, the scribes and the Pharisees began to urge him vehemently and to provoke him to speak of many things, ⁵⁴ laying wait for him and seeking to catch something out of his mouth that they might accuse him.

⁴⁷ Then the Pharisees answered them, Are ye also deceived? ⁴⁸ Have any of the princes or of the Pharisees believed on him? ⁴⁹ But this people who do not know the law are cursed. ⁵⁰ Nicodemus said unto them (he that came to Jesus by night, being one of them), ⁵¹ Does our law judge any man before it hears him and knows what he does? ⁵² They answered and said unto him, Art thou also of Galilee? Search and see, for a prophet has never arisen out of Galilee.

³⁴ They answered and said unto him, Thou wast altogether born in sins, and dost thou teach us? And they cast him out.

¹⁹ and art confident that thou thyself art a guide of the blind, a light of those who are in darkness, ²⁰ an instructor of the ignorant, a teacher of children, who hast the form of knowledge and of the truth in the law. ²¹ Thou, therefore, who teachest another, teachest thou not thyself? Thou that preachest a man should not steal, dost thou steal? ²² Thou that sayest a man should not commit adultery, dost thou commit adultery? Thou that dost abhor idols, dost thou commit sacrilege?

¹⁷ Because thou sayest, I am rich and increased with goods and have need of nothing and knowest not that thou art wretched and miserable and poor and blind and naked,
