¹ ¶ Aleph I am a man that sees affliction in the rod of his wrath.

²¹ Have pity upon me, have pity upon me, O ye my friends; for the hand of God has touched me.

²⁰ Thou who hast caused me to see great and sore troubles, shalt return and quicken me and shalt bring me up again from the depths of the earth.

⁷ Thy wrath lies hard upon me, and thou hast afflicted me with all thy waves. Selah.

¹⁵ I am afflicted and destitute; from my youth up I have feared thee and been in awe of thee. ¹⁶ Thy fierce wrath goes over me; thy terrors have cut me off.

³ He is despised and rejected among men; a man of sorrows, and acquainted with weakness; and we hid as it were our faces from him; he was despised, and we esteemed him not.

¹⁷ I did not sit in the assembly of the mockers, nor did I become puffed up by reason of thy prophecy; I sat alone because thou hast filled me with indignation. ¹⁸ Why was my pain perpetual and my wound incurable, which refuses to be healed? Wilt thou be altogether unto me as a liar and as waters that fail?

¹⁴ ¶ Cursed be the day in which I was born; do not let the day in which my mother bore me be blessed. ¹⁵ Cursed be the man who brought tidings to my father, saying, A man child is born unto thee; making him very glad. ¹⁶ And let that man be as the cities which the LORD overthrew and did not repent; and let him hear the cry in the morning and the shouting at noontide ¹⁷ because he did not slay me in the womb, and my mother would have been my grave, and her womb perpetual conception. ¹⁸ Why did I come forth out of the womb? To see labour and sorrow that my days should be consumed with shame?

⁶ Then they took Jeremiah and cast him into the dungeon of Malchiah the son of Hammelech, that was in the court of the guard: and they let down Jeremiah with cords. And in the dungeon there was no water, but mire; so Jeremiah sunk in the mire.

¹² ¶ Lamed Is it nothing to you, all ye that pass by? behold, and see if there is any sorrow like unto my sorrow, which is come unto me because the LORD has afflicted me in the day of his fierce anger. ¹³ Mem From upon high he has sent fire into my bones, and it prevails against them; he has spread a net for my feet; he has turned me back; he has made me desolate and always with pain. ¹⁴ Nun The yoke of my rebellions is bound in his hand; they are wreathed and come up upon my neck; he has made my strength to fall; the Lord has delivered me into their hands, from whom I am not able to rise up.
