¹ ¶ And he said also unto his disciples, There was a certain rich man who had a steward, and the same was accused unto him that he had wasted his goods. ² And he called him and said unto him, How is it that I hear this of thee? Give an account of thy stewardship, for thou may no longer be steward. ³ Then the steward said within himself, What shall I do? for my lord takes the stewardship away from me; I cannot dig, and I am ashamed to beg. ⁴ I know what I shall do, that, when I am put out of the stewardship, they may receive me into their houses. ⁵ So he called each one of his lord’s debtors unto him and said unto the first, How much dost thou owe unto my lord? ⁶ And he said, A hundred measures of oil. And he said unto him, Take thy bill and sit down quickly and write fifty. ⁷ Then said he to another, And how much dost thou owe? And he said, A hundred measures of wheat. And he said unto him, Take thy bill and write eighty. ⁸ And the lord commended the unjust steward because he had done discreetly; for the sons of this age are in their generation more prudent than the sons of light. ⁹ And I say unto you, Make friends unto yourselves with the mammon of unrighteousness; that, when these fail, you may be received into eternal dwellings. ¹⁰ He that is faithful with little is faithful also with much, and he that is unjust with little is unjust also with much. ¹¹ If therefore ye have not been faithful in the unrighteous mammon, who will commit to your trust the true? ¹² And if ye have not been faithful in that which is another man’s, who shall give you that which is your own? ¹³ No servant can serve two masters, for either he will hate the one and love the other, or else he will hold to the one and despise the other. Ye cannot serve God and mammon. ¹⁴ And the Pharisees also, who were covetous, heard all these things, and they derided him. ¹⁵ And he said unto them, Ye are they who justify themselves before men, but God knows your hearts, for that which is highly esteemed among men is abomination in the sight of God. ¹⁶ The law and the prophets were until John; since that time the kingdom of God is preached, and whosoever will presses into it. ¹⁷ And it is easier for heaven and earth to pass than one tittle of the law to fail. ¹⁸ Whosoever puts away his wife and marries another commits adultery, and whosoever marries her that is put away of her husband commits adultery. ¹⁹ ¶ There was a certain rich man who was clothed in purple and fine linen and fared sumptuously every day; ²⁰ and there was a certain beggar named Lazarus, who was laid at his gate, full of sores ²¹ and desiring to be fed with the crumbs which fell from the rich man’s table: moreover the dogs came and licked his sores. ²² And it came to pass that the beggar died and was carried by the angels into Abraham’s bosom; the rich man also died and was buried; ²³ and in Hades he lifted up his eyes, being in torments, and saw Abraham afar off and Lazarus in his bosom. ²⁴ And he cried and said, Father Abraham, have mercy on me and send Lazarus that he may dip the tip of his finger in water and cool my tongue; for I am tormented in this flame. ²⁵ But Abraham said, Son, remember that thou in thy lifetime didst receive thy good things, and likewise Lazarus evil things; but now he is comforted here, and thou art tormented. ²⁶ And beside all this, between us and you there is a great gulf fixed, so that those who would pass from here to you cannot; neither can they pass from there to us. ²⁷ Then he said, I pray thee therefore, father, that thou would send him to my father’s house, ²⁸ for I have five brethren; that he may testify unto them, lest they also come into this place of torment. ²⁹ Abraham said unto him, They have Moses and the prophets; let them hear them. ³⁰ And he said, No, father Abraham; but if one went unto them from the dead, they will repent. ³¹ And he said unto him, If they do not hear Moses and the prophets, neither will they be persuaded, even though one rose from the dead.

² ¶ And Abram said, Lord GOD, what wilt thou give me, seeing I go childless, and the steward of my house is this Eliezer of Damascus?

¹⁹ And they came near to the steward of Joseph’s house, and they spoke with him at the door of the house

¹ ¶ And David assembled all the princes of Israel, the princes of the tribes, and the princes of the companies that ministered to the king by course, and the princes over the thousands, and princes over the hundreds, with the princes over all the substance and possession of the king, and his sons, with the officers, and with the mighty men, and with all the valiant men, unto Jerusalem.

⁹ ¶ He also that is negligent in his work is brother to him that is the great spendthrift.

⁸ For she did not recognize that I gave her the wheat and the wine and the oil and multiplied unto them the silver and the gold, with which they made Baal.

²³ Therefore is the kingdom of the heavens likened unto a man who is king who would take account of his slaves. ²⁴ And when he had begun to reckon, one was brought unto him who owed him ten thousand talents.

¹⁴ ¶ For it is like a man travelling into a far country, who called his own slaves and delivered unto them his goods. ¹⁵ And unto one he gave five talents, to another two, and to another one, to each one according to his faculty, and straightway took his journey. ¹⁶ And after he was gone, he that had received the five talents went and traded with the same and made another five talents. ¹⁷ And likewise he that had received two, he also gained another two. ¹⁸ But he that had received one went and dug in the earth and hid his lord’s money. ¹⁹ And after a long time the lord of those slaves came and reckoned accounts with them. ²⁰ And so he that had received five talents came and brought another five talents, saying, Lord, thou didst deliver unto me five talents; behold, I have gained beside them five talents more. ²¹ His lord said unto him, Well done, thou good and faithful slave; thou hast been faithful over a few things; I will set thee over many things; enter thou into the joy of thy lord. ²² He also that had received two talents came and said, Lord, thou didst deliver unto me two talents; behold, I have gained two other talents beside them. ²³ His lord said unto him, Well done, good and faithful slave; thou hast been faithful over a few things; I will set thee over many things; enter thou into the joy of thy lord. ²⁴ Then he who had received the one talent came and said, Lord, I knew thee that thou art a hard man, reaping where thou hast not sown and gathering where thou hast not scattered; ²⁵ therefore, I was afraid and went and hid thy talent in the earth; behold, thou hast what is thine. ²⁶ His lord answered and said unto him, Thou wicked and slothful slave, thou knewest that I reap where I did not sow and gather where I have not scattered; ²⁷ therefore, it was expedient for thee to have put my money to the bankers, and then at my coming I should have received mine own with interest. ²⁸ Take, therefore, the talent from him and give it unto him who has ten talents. ²⁹ For unto every one that has shall be given, and he shall have abundance, but from him that has not shall be taken away even that which he has. ³⁰ And cast ye the unprofitable slave into the outer darkness; there shall be weeping and gnashing of teeth.

³ and Joanna the wife of Chuza, Herod’s steward, and Susanna, and many others who ministered unto him of their substance.

⁴² And the Lord said, Who then is that faithful and wise steward whom his lord shall make ruler over his household to give them their portion of food in due season?

¹³ And not many days after, the younger son gathered all together and took his journey into a far country and there wasted his estate with riotous living.

³⁰ But as soon as this thy son was come who has devoured thy living with harlots, thou hast killed the fatted calf for him.

¹⁹ ¶ There was a certain rich man who was clothed in purple and fine linen and fared sumptuously every day;

²⁰ And another came, saying, Lord, behold, here is thy mina, which I have kept laid up in a napkin,

¹ ¶ Let us reckon men as ministers of Christ and stewards of the mysteries of God. ² Moreover, it is required in stewards that each one be found faithful.

⁷ For the bishop must be blameless, as a steward of God; not arrogant, not quick to anger, not given to wine, not hurtful, not greedy of dishonest gain,

³ Ye ask and receive not because ye ask amiss, that ye may consume it upon your pleasures.

¹⁰ Let each one according to the gift that he has received, administer it unto the others, as a good steward of the diverse graces of God.

⁹ ¶ And the LORD God called unto the man and said unto him, Where art thou? ¹⁰ And he replied, I heard thy voice in the garden, and I was afraid because I was naked; and I hid myself. ¹¹ ¶ And he said, Who told thee that thou wast naked? Hast thou eaten of the tree, of which I commanded thee not to eat?

⁹ ¶ And the LORD said unto Cain, Where is Abel thy brother? And he said, I know not, Am I my brother’s keeper? ¹⁰ And he said, What hast thou done? The voice of thy brother’s blood cries unto me from the ground.

²⁰ And the LORD said, Because the cry of Sodom and Gomorrah is great and because their sin is very grievous; ²¹ I will go down now and see whether they have done altogether according to the cry of it, which is come unto me; and if not, I will know.

²³ And he said unto them, Why do ye do such things? For I hear from all the people of your evil dealings. ²⁴ No, my sons, for it is no good report that I hear that ye cause the people of the LORD to transgress.

⁹ Rejoice, O young man, in thy youth; and let thy heart cheer thee in the days of thy youth and walk in the ways of thine heart and in the sight of thine eyes; but know thou, that for all these things God will bring thee into judgment. ¹⁰ Therefore remove sorrow from thy heart and put away evil from thy flesh; for childhood and youth are vanity.

¹⁴ For God shall bring every work to judgment with every secret thing, whether it is good or whether it is evil.

³⁶ But I say unto you, That every idle word that men shall speak, they shall give account thereof in the day of judgment.

²⁰ But God said unto him, Thou fool, this night thy soul shall be required of thee; then whose shall those things be which thou hast stored up?

²¹ for I feared thee because thou art an austere man: thou takest up that which thou didst not lay down and dost reap that which thou didst not sow. ²² Then he said unto him, Out of thine own mouth I will judge thee, thou wicked slave. Thou knewest that I was an austere man, taking up that which I did not lay down, and reaping that which I did not sow; ²³ why then didst thou not give my money into the bank, that at my coming I might have required my own with interest? ²⁴ And he said unto those that stood by, Take from him the mina and give it to him that has the ten minas. ²⁵ (And they said unto him, Lord, he has ten minas.) ²⁶ For I say unto you, That unto every one who has shall be given; and from him that has not, even that which he has shall be taken away from him.

¹² So then each one of us shall give account of himself to God.

¹¹ For it has been declared unto me of you, my brethren, by those of the house of Chloe, that there are contentions among you.

² Moreover, it is required in stewards that each one be found faithful.

⁵ Therefore, judge nothing before the time, until the Lord comes, who both will bring to light the hidden things of darkness and will make manifest the counsels of the hearts; and then shall each one have praise of God.

¹⁰ For we must all appear before the judgment seat of Christ that each one may receive according to that which they have done in the body, good or evil.

¹⁴ Neglect not the gift that is in thee, which is given unto thee to prophesy, through the laying on of the hands of the elders.

²⁴ Some men’s sins are manifest beforehand, before they come unto judgment, but to others they follow after.

⁵ the same shall give account to him that is ready to judge the living and the dead.

¹² And I saw the dead, great and small, stand before God; and the books were opened: and another book was opened; which is the book of life; and the dead were judged by those things which were written in the books, according to their works.

⁶ So Haman came in. And the king said unto him, What shall be done unto the man whom the king delights to honour? Now Haman thought in his heart, To whom would the king delight to do honour more than to myself?

⁴ ¶ The soul of the sluggard desires, and attains nothing: but the soul of the diligent shall be made fat.

¹⁹ ¶ The way of the slothful man is as a hedge of thorns, but the path of the righteous is made plain.

¹⁵ ¶ Slothfulness casts into a deep sleep, and the negligent soul shall suffer hunger.

⁴ ¶ The sluggard will not plow by reason of the cold; therefore he shall beg in harvest and have nothing.

²⁵ ¶ The desire of the slothful kills him; for his hands refuse to labour. ²⁶ There is one who covets greedily all day long, but the righteous gives and keeps on giving.

³⁰ ¶ I went by the field of the slothful and by the vineyard of the man void of understanding, ³¹ and, behold, it was all grown over with thorns, and nettles had covered its face, and its stone wall was broken down. ³² Then I saw, and considered it well: I looked upon it and received chastening. ³³ Yet a little sleep, a little slumber, a little folding of the hands to sleep: ³⁴ So shall thy poverty come as one that travels and thy want as an armed man.

¹³ ¶ The slothful man saith, There is a lion in the way; a lion is in the streets. ¹⁴ ¶ As the door turns upon his hinges, so does the slothful upon his bed. ¹⁵ ¶ The slothful hides his hand in his bosom; it grieves him to bring it again to his mouth. ¹⁶ ¶ The sluggard is wiser in his own conceit than seven men that can give him counsel.

²³ ¶ Be thou diligent to know the countenance of thy sheep, and put thy heart into thy herds. ²⁴ For riches are not for ever, and does the crown endure to every generation? ²⁵ The tender grass shows itself, and the hay appears, and the herbs of the mountains are reaped. ²⁶ The lambs are for thy clothing, and the goats are for the price of the field. ²⁷ And thou shalt have goats’ milk enough for thy food, for the food of thy household, and for the maintenance of thy maidens.

²¹ ¶ He that gives freely unto his slave from a child shall have him become his son in the end.

³ And what will ye do in the day of visitation and in the desolation which shall come from far? To whom will ye flee for help and where will ye leave your glory?

³¹ The prophets prophesied falsely, and the priests bore rule by their hands; and my people love to have it so. What will ye do in the end thereof?

⁵ What will ye do in the solemn day, and in the day of the feast of the LORD?

⁴⁶ ¶ And so they come to Jericho, and as he went out of Jericho with his disciples and a great multitude, blind Bartimaeus, the son of Timaeus, sat by the highway side begging.

¹⁷ and he thought within himself, saying, What shall I do because I have no room where to bestow my fruits?

²⁰ and there was a certain beggar named Lazarus, who was laid at his gate, full of sores

²² And it came to pass that the beggar died and was carried by the angels into Abraham’s bosom; the rich man also died and was buried;

⁴ And he would not for a while, but afterward he said within himself, Though I do not fear God, nor regard man,

⁸ ¶ The neighbours, therefore, and those who before had seen him that he was blind said, Is not this he that sat and begged?

² And a certain man lame from his mother’s womb was carried, whom they laid daily at the gate of the temple which is called Beautiful, to ask alms {lit. mercy} of those that entered into the temple,

⁶ And he trembling and astonished said, Lord, what wilt thou have me to do? And the Lord said unto him, Arise and go into the city, and it shall be told thee what it behooves thee to do.

¹¹ For we hear that there are some who walk among you out of order, not working at all, but are busybodies.

⁹ Lest I be full, and deny thee, and say, Who is the LORD? or lest I be poor, and steal, and blaspheme the name of my God.

²² For my people are foolish; the ignorant sons with no understanding have not known me; they are wise to do evil, but to do good they have no knowledge.

¹⁵ This wisdom is not that which descends from above, but is earthly, natural, diabolical.

²⁴ And when he had begun to reckon, one was brought unto him who owed him ten thousand talents.

⁴¹ There was a certain creditor who had two debtors: the one owed five hundred denarius, and the other fifty. ⁴² And when they had nothing to pay, he released them both from their debt. Tell me therefore, which of them will love him most?

⁹ And I say unto you, Make friends unto yourselves with the mammon of unrighteousness; that, when these fail, you may be received into eternal dwellings.

¹² And if ye have not been faithful in that which is another man’s, who shall give you that which is your own?

¹⁰ not defrauding, but showing all good fidelity; that they may adorn the doctrine of God our Saviour in all things.

¹¹ Solomon had a vineyard at Baalhamon; he let out the vineyard unto keepers; for its fruit each one was to bring a thousand pieces of silver. ¹² My vineyard, which is mine, is before me; the thousand pieces shall be thine, O Solomon, and two hundred for those that keep the fruit.

⁹ ¶ And he began to speak this parable to the people: A certain man planted a vineyard and let it out to husbandmen and went into a far country for a long time.

¹² And again he sent a third, and they wounded him also and cast him out.

¹ ¶ Now the serpent was more astute than all the animals of the field which the LORD God had made. And he said unto the woman, Has God indeed said, Ye shall not eat of every tree of the garden?

¹⁰ Now, therefore, let us be wise concerning him, that he not multiply and it come to pass that when war comes, he shall also join with our enemies and fight against us and so leave the land.

³ But Amnon had a friend, whose name was Jonadab, the son of Shimeah, David’s brother, and Jonadab was a very astute man.

¹⁹ Now, therefore, call unto me all the prophets of Baal, all his servants, and all his priests; let no one be lacking, for I have a great sacrifice to do to Baal; whoever is lacking shall not live. But Jehu did it in subtilty to the intent that he might destroy those that served Baal.

¹⁴ from men, with thy hand, O LORD, from men of the world, who have their portion in this life and whose belly thou dost fill with thy provision: they satisfy their sons and leave the rest to their family.

¹⁰ For he sees that all the wise men die, likewise the fool and the ignorant perish and leave their wealth to others. ¹¹ Their inward thought is that their houses are eternal and their dwelling places to all generations; they call their lands after their own names. ¹² Nevertheless man will not abide forever in honour; he is like the beasts that are cut off. ¹³ This their way is their folly; yet their posterity approve their sayings. Selah. ¹⁴ Like sheep they are laid in Sheol; death shall feed on them, and the upright shall have dominion over them in the morning, and their beauty shall be consumed in the grave from their dwelling. ¹⁵ ¶ Surely God will ransom my soul from the hand of Sheol when he shall take me. Selah. ¹⁶ Be not thou afraid when one is made rich, when the glory of his house is increased; ¹⁷ for in his death he shall carry nothing away; nor shall his glory descend after him. ¹⁸ Though while he lives, his life shall be blessed: and men will praise thee when thou art prosperous. ¹⁹ He shall enter into the generation of his fathers; they shall never see light forever.

⁶ ¶ Go to the ant, thou sluggard; consider her ways, and be wise, ⁷ Who having no guide, overseer, or ruler, ⁸ provides her food in the summer and gathers her food in the harvest.

²⁶ Peter said unto him, Of strangers. Jesus said unto him, Then the sons are free.

⁴ I know what I shall do, that, when I am put out of the stewardship, they may receive me into their houses.

¹⁰ He that is faithful with little is faithful also with much, and he that is unjust with little is unjust also with much.

⁶ And the Lord said, Hear what the unjust judge says.

³⁴ And Jesus answering said unto them, The sons of this age marry and are given in marriage,

³⁶ While ye have the Light, believe in the Light that ye may be the sons of light. Jesus spoke these things and departed and hid himself from them.

¹⁸ ¶ Let no one deceive himself. If any one among you seems to be wise in this age, let them become a fool that they may be wise.

⁸ For in another time ye were darkness, but now ye are light in the Lord: walk as children of light;

¹⁹ whose end shall be perdition, whose God is their belly and whose glory is in their shame, who mind earthly things).

⁵ Ye are all the sons of light, and the sons of the day; we are not of the night, nor of darkness.

⁹ But ye are the chosen generation, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, an acquired people, that ye should show forth the virtues of him who has called you out of darkness into his marvellous light.

¹⁰ In this the sons of God are manifest, and the sons of the devil: whosoever does not righteousness and that loves not his brother is not of God.

²⁶ My flesh and my heart fail; the strength of my heart is that God is my portion for ever.

¹⁷ ¶ He that gives unto the poor lends unto the LORD, and he will give him his reward.

⁵ Wilt thou set thine eyes upon riches which are not? For they shall certainly make themselves wings; they shall fly away as an eagle toward heaven.

¹ ¶ Cast thy bread upon the waters, for thou shalt find it after many days.

³ In the day when the keepers of the house shall tremble and the strong men shall bow themselves and the grinders cease because they are few and those that look out of the windows are darkened; ⁴ and the doors outside shall be shut because the voice of the grinder is low, and he shall rise up at the voice of the bird and all the daughters of song shall be humbled; ⁵ when they shall also be afraid of that which is high, and fears shall be in the way, and the almond tree shall flourish, and the grasshopper shall be a burden, and appetite shall fail: because man goes to the home of his age, and the mourners shall go about the streets; ⁶ before the silver chain is broken, and the golden bowl is broken, and the pitcher is broken at the fountain, and the wheel is broken at the cistern; ⁷ and the dust returns to the earth as it was before and the spirit returns unto God who gave it.

¹⁶ For I will not contend for ever, neither will I be always wroth: for by me is the spirit covered by the body, and I have made the souls.

⁷ Is it not to share thy bread with the hungry and that thou bring the poor that are cast out into thy house? when thou seest the naked, that thou cover him; and that thou not hide thyself from thy brother? ⁸ ¶ Then shall thy light break forth as the morning, and thine health shall spring forth speedily: and thy righteousness shall go before thee; the glory of the LORD shall gather thee.

²⁷ Therefore, O king, approve my counsel and redeem thy sins with righteousness and thine iniquities with mercies unto the poor: behold the medicine for thy sin.

¹⁹ ¶ Lay not up for yourselves treasures upon the earth, where moth and rust corrupt, and where thieves break through and steal;

²⁴ No one can serve two masters, for either he will hate the one and love the other or else he will hold to the one and despise the other. Ye cannot serve God and riches.

²¹ Jesus said unto him, If thou desire to be perfect, go and sell what thou hast and give it to the poor, and thou shalt have treasure in heaven; and come and follow me.

³⁵ for I was hungry, and ye gave me food; I was thirsty, and ye gave me drink; I was a stranger, and ye took me in; ³⁶ naked, and ye clothed me; I was sick, and ye visited me; I was in prison, and ye came unto me. ³⁷ Then shall the righteous answer him, saying, Lord, when did we see thee hungry and feed thee? or thirsty and give thee drink? ³⁸ When did we see thee a stranger and take thee in? or naked and clothe thee? ³⁹ Or when did we see thee sick or in prison and come unto thee? ⁴⁰ And the King shall answer and say unto them, Verily I say unto you, Inasmuch as ye have done it unto one of the least of these my brothers, ye have done it unto me.

⁴¹ But rather give alms {lit. do acts of mercy} of such things as ye have; and, behold, all things are clean unto you.

³³ Sell what ye have and give alms; {lit. do acts of mercy}; provide yourselves bags which wax not old, a treasure in the heavens that fails not, where no thief approaches neither moth corrupts.

¹⁴ and thou shalt be blessed, for they cannot recompense thee; for thou shalt be recompensed at the resurrection of the just.

⁴ And when he looked on him, he was afraid and said, What is it, Lord? And he said unto him, Thy prayers and thine alms {lit. thine acts of mercy} are come up for a memorial before God.

³¹ and said, Cornelius, thy prayer is heard and thine alms are had in remembrance in the sight of God.

¹⁷ For our tribulation, which is momentary and light, prepares an exceeding and eternal weight of glory unto us;

¹² For the administration of this service not only supplies the needs of the saints, but also abounds in much thanksgiving unto God; ¹³ that by the experience of this ministration, they glorify God for the obedience of your consent unto the gospel of the Christ and in your liberal distribution unto them and unto everyone, ¹⁴ and in their prayer for you, for they love you because of the eminent grace of God in you. ¹⁵ Thanks be unto God for his indescribable gift.

⁹ For those that desire to be rich fall into temptation and a snare, and into many foolish and hurtful lusts which drown men in destruction and perdition. ¹⁰ For the love of money is the root of all evil, which while some coveted after, they have erred from the faith and pierced themselves through with many sorrows.

¹⁷ Charge those that are rich in this world, that they not be highminded, not placing their hope in uncertain riches, but in the living God, who gives us richly all things to enjoy; ¹⁸ but charge them to do good, that they be rich in good works, liberal to distribute, willing to communicate, ¹⁹ laying up in store for themselves a good foundation against the future, that they may lay hold on eternal life.

¹⁶ The Lord give mercy unto the house of Onesiphorus for he often refreshed me and was not ashamed of my chain; ¹⁷ for when he was in Rome, he sought me out very diligently and found me. ¹⁸ The Lord grant unto him that he may find mercy of the Lord in that day; and in how many things he ministered unto me at Ephesus, thou knowest very well.

²¹ keep yourselves in the love of God, waiting for the mercy of our Lord Jesus Christ, unto eternal life,

²¹ His lord said unto him, Well done, thou good and faithful slave; thou hast been faithful over a few things; I will set thee over many things; enter thou into the joy of thy lord.

⁶ This he said, not that he cared for the poor, but because he was a thief and had the bag and would take from what was put therein.

² And supper being ended, the devil having now put into the heart of Judas Iscariot, Simon’s son, to betray him,

²⁷ And after the sop Satan entered into him. Then Jesus said unto him, That which thou shalt do, do it more quickly.

² who was faithful to him that appointed him over all his house, as also Moses was faithful.

¹⁸ Riches and honour are with me, yea, durable riches and righteousness. ¹⁹ My fruit is better than gold, yea, than precious stones, and my revenue than choice silver.

²² Now when Jesus heard this, he said unto him, Yet lackest thou one thing: sell all that thou hast and distribute unto the poor, and thou shalt have treasure in heaven; and come, follow me.

⁸ Unto me, who am less than the least of all saints, is this grace given that I should preach among the Gentiles the unsearchable riches of the Christ

⁵ Hearken, my beloved brethren, Has not God chosen the poor of this world that they might be rich in faith and heirs of the kingdom which he has promised to those that love him?

¹⁸ I counsel thee to buy of me gold refined in the fire, that thou may be made rich; and clothed in white raiment, so that the shame of thy nakedness not be uncovered; and anoint thine eyes with eyesalve, that thou may see.

¹⁴ But who am I, and what is my people, that we should be able to offer so willingly after this sort? For all things come of thee and of thine own have we given thee. ¹⁵ For we are strangers before thee, and sojourners, as were all our fathers; our days on the earth are as a shadow, and there is no other hope. ¹⁶ O LORD our God, all this store that we have prepared to build thee a house for thy holy name comes of thy hand and is all thy own.

²¹ and said, Naked came I out of my mother’s womb, and naked shall I return there. The LORD gave, and the LORD has taken away; blessed be the name of the LORD.

¹⁶ And of thy garments thou didst take and make altars of divers colours and play the harlot thereupon; the like shall not come again, neither shall it be so. ¹⁷ Thou hast taken likewise the vessels of thy beauty of my gold and of my silver, which I had given thee and made to thyself images of men and didst commit whoredom with them ¹⁸ And thou didst take thy garments of many colours and cover them; and thou hast set my oil and my incense before them. ¹⁹ My bread also which I had given thee; the fine flour and the oil and the honey with which I fed thee, thou hast even set it before them for a sweet savour; and thus it was, said the Lord GOD. ²⁰ Moreover thou hast taken thy sons and thy daughters, whom thou hast borne unto me, and these thou hast sacrificed unto them to be devoured. Is this of thy whoredoms a small matter, ²¹ that thou hast sacrificed my children and given them over to them that they might cause them to pass through the fire unto them?

¹⁴ ¶ For it is like a man travelling into a far country, who called his own slaves and delivered unto them his goods. ¹⁵ And unto one he gave five talents, to another two, and to another one, to each one according to his faculty, and straightway took his journey. ¹⁶ And after he was gone, he that had received the five talents went and traded with the same and made another five talents. ¹⁷ And likewise he that had received two, he also gained another two. ¹⁸ But he that had received one went and dug in the earth and hid his lord’s money. ¹⁹ And after a long time the lord of those slaves came and reckoned accounts with them. ²⁰ And so he that had received five talents came and brought another five talents, saying, Lord, thou didst deliver unto me five talents; behold, I have gained beside them five talents more. ²¹ His lord said unto him, Well done, thou good and faithful slave; thou hast been faithful over a few things; I will set thee over many things; enter thou into the joy of thy lord. ²² He also that had received two talents came and said, Lord, thou didst deliver unto me two talents; behold, I have gained two other talents beside them. ²³ His lord said unto him, Well done, good and faithful slave; thou hast been faithful over a few things; I will set thee over many things; enter thou into the joy of thy lord. ²⁴ Then he who had received the one talent came and said, Lord, I knew thee that thou art a hard man, reaping where thou hast not sown and gathering where thou hast not scattered; ²⁵ therefore, I was afraid and went and hid thy talent in the earth; behold, thou hast what is thine. ²⁶ His lord answered and said unto him, Thou wicked and slothful slave, thou knewest that I reap where I did not sow and gather where I have not scattered; ²⁷ therefore, it was expedient for thee to have put my money to the bankers, and then at my coming I should have received mine own with interest. ²⁸ Take, therefore, the talent from him and give it unto him who has ten talents. ²⁹ For unto every one that has shall be given, and he shall have abundance, but from him that has not shall be taken away even that which he has.

⁴² but only one thing is necessary, and Mary has chosen that good part, which shall not be taken away from her.

¹³ And having called ten of his slaves, he delivered them ten minas and said unto them, Trade until I come. ¹⁴ But his citizens hated him and sent an embassy after him, saying, We will not have this man to reign over us. ¹⁵ And it came to pass that when he was returned, having received the kingdom, then he commanded these slaves to be called unto him, to whom he had given the money, that he might know how much each one had gained by trading. ¹⁶ Then came the first, saying, Lord, thy mina has gained ten minas. ¹⁷ And he said unto him, Well done, thou good slave; because thou hast been faithful in a very little, thou shalt have authority over ten cities. ¹⁸ And the second came, saying, Lord, thy mina has made five minas. ¹⁹ And he said likewise to him, Be thou also over five cities. ²⁰ And another came, saying, Lord, behold, here is thy mina, which I have kept laid up in a napkin,

³ For ye are dead and your life is hid with the Christ in God. ⁴ When Christ, who is our life, shall be manifested, then shall ye also be manifested with him in glory.

⁴ unto the incorruptible inheritance that cannot be defiled and that does not fade away, conserved in the heavens for you, ⁵ who are kept in the virtue of God by faith, to attain unto the saving health which is made ready to be manifested in the last time.

¹⁵ ¶ And if it seems evil unto you to serve the LORD, choose you this day whom ye will serve, whether the gods which your fathers served that were on the other side of the river or the gods of the Amorites, in whose land ye dwell; but as for me and my house, we will serve the LORD.

¹⁰ Then Jesus said unto him, Get thee hence, Satan, for it is written, Thou shalt worship the Lord thy God, and him only shalt thou serve.

⁵⁰ And Jesus said unto him, Forbid him not, for he that is not against us is for us.

²³ He that is not with me is against me, and he that does not gather with me scatters.

²⁶ If anyone comes to me and does not hate his father and mother and wife and children and brethren and sisters, and even his own life also, he cannot be my disciple.

¹⁶ Or know ye not that to whom ye present yourselves slaves to obey, his slaves ye are to whom ye obey, whether of sin unto death or of the obedience unto righteousness? ¹⁷ Thank God that, although ye were the slaves of sin, ye have obeyed from the heart that form of doctrine unto which ye are delivered; ¹⁸ and freed from sin, ye are become the slaves of righteousness. ¹⁹ I speak a human thing because of the weakness of our flesh: that as ye presented your members to serve uncleanness and iniquity unto iniquity, likewise now present your members to serve righteousness unto holiness. ²⁰ For being previously the slaves of sin, now ye have been made the slaves of righteousness. ²¹ What fruit had ye then in those things of which ye are now ashamed? for the end of those things is death. ²² But now freed from sin and made slaves to God, ye have as your fruit sanctification and as the end, everlasting life.

⁵ For those that are according to the flesh know the things that are of the flesh; but those that are according to the Spirit, the things that are of the Spirit. ⁶ For the prudence of the flesh is death, but the prudence of the Spirit, life and peace, ⁷ because the prudence of the flesh is enmity against God; for it does not subject itself to the law of God, neither indeed can it. ⁸ So then, those that are carnal cannot please God.

⁴ Ye adulterers and adulteresses, know ye not that the friendship of the world is enmity with God? Whosoever therefore that desires to be a friend of the world, makes himself the enemy of God.

¹⁵ Love not the world neither the things that are in the world. If anyone loves the world, the charity of the Father is not in him. ¹⁶ For all that is in the world, the lust of the flesh and the lust of the eyes and the pride of life, is not of the Father, but is of the world.

¹⁵ But in my adversity they rejoiced and gathered themselves together; yea, the smiters gathered themselves together against me, and I knew it not; they tore me apart and did not cease: ¹⁶ With immature hypocritical mockers, they gnashed upon me with their teeth.

⁵¹ ¶ The proud have had me greatly in derision; yet I have not deviated from thy law.

³ He is despised and rejected among men; a man of sorrows, and acquainted with weakness; and we hid as it were our faces from him; he was despised, and we esteemed him not.

¹¹ And these anxious dogs are insatiable, and even the shepherds did not know enough to understand: they all look to their own ways, each one for his gain, from his quarter.

¹³ For from the least of them even unto the greatest of them each one is given to greed; and from the prophet even unto the priest every one deals falsely.

¹⁰ Therefore I will give their wives unto others and their fields unto those that shall inherit them: for each one from the least even unto the greatest is given to greed; from the prophet even unto the priest every one deals falsely.

⁷ ¶ O LORD, thou hast seduced me, and I was seduced; thou wert stronger than I and hast overcome me; I am in derision daily; every one mocks me. ⁸ For since I spoke out, I raised my voice crying, Violence and destruction; because the word of the LORD has been a reproach unto me and a derision, daily.

²⁵ There is a conspiracy of her prophets in the midst thereof, like a roaring lion ravening the prey; they have devoured souls; they have taken treasures and honour; they have made her many widows in the midst thereof. ²⁶ Her priests have violated my law by force and have profaned my holy things; they have made no difference between the holy and the profane, neither have they showed the difference between the unclean and the clean and have hid their eyes from my sabbaths, and I am profaned among them. ²⁷ Her princes in the midst thereof are like wolves ravening the prey, to shed blood, and to destroy souls, to follow their own greed. ²⁸ And her prophets have plastered them over with loose mud, prophesying vanity and divining lies unto them, saying: Thus hath the Lord GOD said, when the LORD has not spoken. ²⁹ The people of the land have used oppression and exercised robbery and have done violence unto the poor and needy; they have oppressed the stranger wrongfully.

³¹ And they shall come unto thee as the people come, and they shall be before thee, my people, and they shall hear thy words, but they shall not do them; for with their mouth they flatter, but their heart goes after their covetousness.

¹³ ¶ But woe unto you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! for ye shut up the kingdom of the heavens in front of men, for ye neither go in yourselves, neither suffer ye those that are entering to go in.

⁵³ And they laughed him to scorn, knowing that she was dead.

¹⁵ And he said unto them, Take heed and beware of all covetousness; for a man’s life consists not in the abundance of the things which he possesses.

⁴⁷ who devour the houses of the widows and for a pretext make long prayers: the same shall receive greater damnation.

³⁵ And the people stood beholding. And the princes also with them derided him, saying, He saved others; let him save himself if he is the Christ, the chosen of God.

² For there shall be men who are lovers of their own selves, covetous, boasters, proud, evil speakers, disobedient to their parents, unthankful, impure,

³⁶ and others experienced cruel mockings and scourgings, and added to this, bonds and imprisonment;

² with our eyes fixed on Jesus, the author and finisher of our faith, who having been offered joy, endured the cross {Gr. stauros – stake}, despising the shame and was seated at the right hand of the throne of God. ³ For consider him that endured such contradiction of sinners against himself lest ye be wearied in your souls and faint.

⁷ And the LORD replied unto Samuel, Do not look on his countenance or on the height of his stature because I have refused him, for it is not as man sees, for man looks on the outward appearance, but the LORD looks on the heart.

¹⁷ I know also, my God, that thou dost try the heart, and hast pleasure in uprightness. As for me, in the uprightness of my heart I have willingly offered all these things; and now have I seen with joy that thy people, who are present here, have given willingly unto thee.

³⁰ thou shalt hear from the heavens, from the place of thy habitation, and forgive and render unto each one according to his ways, having known his heart (for thou only knowest the hearts of the sons of men),

⁹ Let wickedness consume the wicked; but establish the just: for the righteous God is he who tries the hearts and kidneys.

³ For the wicked boasts of his heart’s desire and blesses the covetous, whom the LORD abhors.

¹³ This their way is their folly; yet their posterity approve their sayings. Selah.

¹⁸ Though while he lives, his life shall be blessed: and men will praise thee when thou art prosperous.

¹ To the Overcomer, A Psalm of David. ¶ O LORD, thou hast searched me and known me. ² Thou knowest my sitting down and my rising up, thou dost understand my thoughts from afar.

⁵ ¶ Every one that is proud in heart is an abomination to the LORD; the covenant that he makes, shall not be without chastening.

⁶ ¶ Most men will proclaim each one his own mercy, but who can find a man of truth?

² ¶ Every way of a man is right in his own eyes: but the LORD weighs the hearts.

¹⁰ ¶ Hear the word of the LORD, ye princes of Sodom; give ear unto the law of our God, ye people of Gomorrah. ¹¹ To what purpose is the multitude of your sacrifices unto me? shall the LORD say. I am full of the burnt offerings of rams and the fat of fed beasts; and I do not delight in the blood of bullocks or of lambs or of he goats. ¹² When ye come to appear before me, who has required this at your hand, to tread my courts? ¹³ Bring no more vain oblations; the incense is an abomination unto me; the new moons and sabbaths, the calling of assemblies, I cannot stand them; iniquity and the solemn meeting. ¹⁴ Your new moons and your appointed feasts my soul hates: they are a trouble unto me; I am weary to bear them.

¹⁰ I the LORD search the heart; I try the kidneys, even to give each man according to his ways and according to the fruit of his doings.

²¹ ¶ I hate, I despise your solemnities, and I will not savour your assemblies. ²² Though ye offer me your burnt offerings and your presents, I will not accept them; neither will I regard the peace offerings of your fat beasts.

¹⁵ We say, therefore, now, that blessed are the proud and even that those that work wickedness are prospered; those that tempted God have escaped.

² Therefore, when thou doest thine alms, do not sound a trumpet before thee, as the hypocrites do in the synagogues and in the streets that they may have glory of men. Verily I say unto you, They already have their reward.

⁵ ¶ And when thou prayest, thou shalt not be as the hypocrites are, for they love to pray standing in the synagogues and in the corners of the streets that they may be seen of men. Verily I say unto you, They already have their reward.

¹⁶ ¶ Moreover when ye fast, be not, as the hypocrites, of a sad countenance, for they disfigure their faces that they may appear unto men to fast. Verily I say unto you, They already have their reward.

⁵ But they do all their works that they may be seen of men: they make broad their phylacteries and enlarge the borders of their garments

²⁵ Woe unto you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! for ye make clean the outside of the cup or of the platter, but within they are full of extortion and incontinence. ²⁶ Thou blind Pharisee, cleanse first that which is within the cup and platter that the outside of them may be clean also. ²⁷ Woe unto you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! for ye are like unto whitewashed sepulchres, who indeed appear beautiful outside, but inside are full of dead men’s bones and of all uncleanness.

²⁹ But he, desiring to justify himself, said unto Jesus, And who is my neighbour?

³⁹ And the Lord said unto him, Now do ye Pharisees make clean the outside of the cup and the platter; but your inward part is full of ravening and wickedness.

¹¹ The Pharisee stood and prayed thus with himself, God, I thank thee that I am not as other men are: extortioners, unjust, adulterers, or even as this publican.

²¹ And he said, All these things I have kept from my youth up.

²⁰ ¶ And they watched him and sent forth spies who feigned themselves just men that they might take hold of him as he was speaking, that so they might deliver him unto the power and authority of the governor.

²⁵ and needed not that any man should give testimony, for he knew what was in man.

¹⁷ He said unto him the third time, Simon, son of Jonas, lovest thou me? Peter was grieved because he said unto him the third time, Lovest thou me? And he said, Lord, thou knowest all things; thou knowest that I love thee. Jesus said unto him, Feed my sheep.

¹⁸ He, therefore, purchased a field with the reward of his iniquity; and hanging himself, he burst asunder in the midst, and all his bowels gushed out.

⁸ And God, who knows the hearts, bore them witness, giving them the Holy Spirit, even as he did unto us,

²⁰ For by the deeds of the law, no flesh shall be justified in his sight; for by the law is the knowledge of sin.

²¹ Was not Abraham our father justified by works when he offered his son Isaac upon the altar? ²² Dost thou not see how the faith worked together with his works, and the faith was complete by the works? ²³ And that the scripture was fulfilled which saith, Abraham believed God, and it was imputed unto him for righteousness, and he was called the Friend of God. ²⁴ Ye see then how that by works a man is justified, and not only by faith. ²⁵ Likewise also was not Rahab the harlot justified by works, when she received the messengers and sent them out another way?

⁴ but let the interior adorning of the heart be without corruption, and of an agreeable spirit and peaceful, which is precious in the sight of God.

⁵ ¶ Likewise, young people, be subject to the elders in such a manner that you are all subject to one another. Be clothed with humility of will, for God resists the proud and gives grace to the humble.

²³ And I will kill her children with death, and all the congregations {Gr. ekklesia – called out ones} shall know that I AM he that searches the kidneys and hearts, and I will give unto each one of you according to your works.

² and saying, Repent ye, for the kingdom of heaven is at hand.

¹⁷ From that time Jesus began to preach and to say, Repent, for the kingdom of the heavens is at hand.

²³ ¶ And Jesus went about all Galilee, teaching in their synagogues and preaching the gospel of the kingdom and healing every sickness and every bodily weakness among the people.

⁷ And as ye go, preach, saying, The kingdom of the heavens has come.

⁹ But what did you go out to see? A prophet? Yes, I say unto you, and more than a prophet. ¹⁰ For this is he of whom it is written, Behold, I send my messenger before thy face, who shall prepare thy way before thee. ¹¹ Verily I say unto you, Among those that are born of women there has not risen a greater than John the Baptist; notwithstanding, he that is least in the kingdom of the heavens is greater than he. ¹² From the days of John the Baptist until now, life is given unto the kingdom of the heavens, and the valiant take hold of it. ¹³ For all the prophets and the law prophesied until John. ¹⁴ And if ye will receive it, this is that Elijah who was to come.

³² For John came unto you in the way of righteousness, and ye believed him not, but the publicans and the harlots believed him, and ye, when ye had seen it, repented not afterward that ye might believe him.

¹⁴ ¶ Now after John was put in prison, Jesus came into Galilee, preaching the gospel of the kingdom of God

⁴⁵ But he went out and began to publish it much and to blaze abroad the matter, insomuch that Jesus could no more openly enter into the city, but was without in desert places; and they came to him from every quarter.

²⁶ But what went ye out to see? A prophet? Yea, I say unto you, and much more than a prophet. ²⁷ This is he of whom it is written, Behold, I send my messenger before thy face, who shall prepare thy way before thee. ²⁸ For I say unto you, Among those that are born of women there is not a greater prophet than John the Baptist, but he that is least in the kingdom of God is greater than he. ²⁹ And all the people that heard him and the publicans justified God, being baptized with the baptism of John.

² And he sent them to preach the kingdom of God and to heal the sick.

⁹ and heal the sick that are therein and say unto them, The kingdom of God is come near unto you.

¹¹ Even the very dust of your city which cleaves on us we do wipe off against you; notwithstanding be ye sure of this that the kingdom of God is come near unto you.

²⁹ Abraham said unto him, They have Moses and the prophets; let them hear them.

³¹ And he said unto him, If they do not hear Moses and the prophets, neither will they be persuaded, even though one rose from the dead.

⁴⁵ Philip found Nathanael and said unto him, We have found him of whom Moses in the law and the prophets wrote: Jesus of Nazareth, the son of Joseph.

⁴⁸ If we let him thus alone, everyone will believe on him, and the Romans shall come and take away both our place and the nation.

¹⁹ The Pharisees therefore said among themselves, Perceive ye how ye prevail nothing? behold, the world is gone after him.

¹⁸ But God has thus fulfilled those things which he had showed in advance by the mouth of all his prophets, that his Christ should suffer.

²⁴ And all the prophets from Samuel and those that follow after, as many as have spoken, have likewise foretold of these days. ²⁵ Ye are the sons of the prophets and of the covenant which God made with our fathers, saying unto Abraham, And in thy seed shall all the families of the earth be blessed.

²⁵ Of old thou hast laid the foundation of the earth; and the heavens are the work of thy hands. ²⁶ They shall perish, but thou shalt endure: yea, all of them shall wax old like a garment; as a vesture thou shalt change them, and they shall be changed: ²⁷ But thou art the same, and thy years shall have no end.

⁸ The grass withers, the open flower fades; but the word of our God shall stand for ever.

⁶ Lift up your eyes to the heavens, and look upon the earth beneath; for the heavens shall vanish away like smoke, and the earth shall wax old like a garment, and those that dwell therein shall perish in like manner; but my saving health shall be for ever, and my righteousness shall never perish.

¹⁸ For verily I say unto you, Until heaven and earth pass away, not one jot or one tittle shall pass from the law until all is fulfilled.

³³ The heaven and the earth shall pass away, but my words shall not pass away.

³¹ Do we then make void the law through faith? No, in no wise; to the contrary, we establish the law.

²⁵ but the word of the Lord endures for ever. And this is the word which by the gospel is preached unto you.

¹⁰ But the day of the Lord will come as a thief in the night, in which the heavens shall pass away with a great noise, and the elements, burning, shall be dissolved, and the earth and the works that are in it shall be burned up.

¹¹ ¶ And I saw a great white throne and him that was seated upon it, from whose face the earth and the heaven fled away; and their place was not found.

¹ ¶ And I saw a new heaven and a new earth; for the first heaven and the first earth were passed away; and there was no more sea.

⁴ And God shall wipe away all tears from their eyes; and death shall be no more neither shall there be any more sorrow nor crying nor pain; for the former things are passed away.

³¹ It was also said, Whosoever shall put away his wife, let him give her a bill of divorce; ³² but I say unto you, That whosoever shall put away his wife, except for the cause of fornication, causes her to commit adultery; and whosoever shall marry her that is divorced commits adultery.

⁹ And I say unto you, Whosoever shall put away his wife, except it be for fornication and shall marry another, commits adultery, and whosoever marries her that is put away commits adultery.

¹¹ And he said unto them, Whosoever shall put away his wife and marry another commits adultery against her. ¹² And if the woman shall put away her husband and be married to another, she commits adultery.

⁴ The wife does not have authority of her own body, but the husband; and likewise also the husband does not have authority of his own body, but the wife.

¹⁰ ¶ And unto the married I command, yet not I, but the Lord, Let not the wife separate from her husband; ¹¹ and if she separates, let her remain unmarried or be reconciled to her husband, and let not the husband put away his wife. ¹² But to the rest I speak, not the Lord: If any brother has a wife that does not believe, and she consents to dwell with him, let him not put her away.

²⁶ And the weight of the golden earrings that he requested was a thousand seven hundred shekels of gold, without the ornaments and collars and purple clothing that was on the kings of Midian and without the chains that were about their camels’ necks.

¹⁵ ¶ And Mordecai went out from the presence of the king in royal apparel of blue and white and with a great crown of gold and with a mantel of fine linen and purple; and the city of Shushan rejoiced and was glad.

¹¹ They send forth their little ones like a flock of sheep, and their children dance. ¹² They jump at the sound of the timbrel and harp and rejoice at the sound of the organ. ¹³ They spend their days in pleasure and in a moment go down to Sheol. ¹⁴ Therefore, they say unto God, Depart from us; for we do not desire the knowledge of thy ways. ¹⁵ Who is the Almighty that we should serve him? And what profit should we have if we pray unto him?

³ For I became angry against the foolish when I saw the peace of the wicked. ⁴ Because there is no restraint that would bring about their death, but their strength is firm. ⁵ They are not in trouble as other men; neither are they plagued like other men. ⁶ Therefore they are crowned with pride; they cover themselves with violence as a garment. ⁷ Their eyes stand out with fatness; they easily obtain the desires of their heart.

¹³ Thus wast thou decked with gold and silver; and thy raiment was of fine linen and silk and broidered work; thou didst eat fine flour of wheat and honey and oil: and thou wast made exceeding beautiful, and thou hast prospered even until thou hast reigned.

⁴⁹ Behold, this was the iniquity of thy sister Sodom: pride, fullness of bread, and abundance of idleness was in her and in her daughters, neither did she strengthen the hand of the afflicted and needy.

⁷ Of fine linen with broidered work from Egypt was thy curtain, that it might serve to be thy sail; {Heb. banner}; of blue and purple from the isles of Elishah was thy pavilion.

⁴ that lie upon beds of ivory and stretch themselves upon their couches and eat the lambs out of the flock and the calves out of the midst of the stall; ⁵ that chant to the sound of the flute and invent to themselves instruments of music, like David; ⁶ that drink wine in bowls, and anoint themselves with the chief ointments, but they are not grieved for the affliction of Joseph.

¹⁷ And they clothed him with purple and platted a crown of thorns and put it about his head

²⁰ And when they had mocked him, they took off the purple from him and put his own clothes on him and led him out to crucify him.

¹⁶ And he spoke a parable unto them, saying, The ground of a certain rich man brought forth plentifully; ¹⁷ and he thought within himself, saying, What shall I do because I have no room where to bestow my fruits? ¹⁸ And he said, This will I do: I will pull down my storehouses and build greater, and there will I bestow all my fruits and my goods. ¹⁹ And I will say to my soul, Soul, thou hast many goods laid up for many years; take thine ease, eat, drink, and be merry. ²⁰ But God said unto him, Thou fool, this night thy soul shall be required of thee; then whose shall those things be which thou hast stored up? ²¹ So is he that lays up treasure for himself and is not rich in God.

¹ ¶ And he said also unto his disciples, There was a certain rich man who had a steward, and the same was accused unto him that he had wasted his goods.

²⁴ And when Jesus saw that he was very sorrowful, he said, How difficult it is for those that have riches to enter into the kingdom of God! ²⁵ For it is easier to put a cable through the eye of a needle than for a rich man to enter into the kingdom of God.

¹ ¶ Come now, Oh ye rich, weep and howl for your miseries that shall come upon you. ² Your riches are rotten, and your garments are motheaten. ³ Your gold and silver is corrupted with rust; and the rust of them shall be a witness against you and shall completely eat your flesh, as fire. Ye have heaped treasure together for the last days. ⁴ Behold, the hire of the labourers who have reaped your fields (which you have kept back by fraud) cries out; and the cries of those who have reaped have entered into the ears of the Lord of the hosts. ⁵ Ye have lived in pleasure on the earth and been wanton; ye have refreshed your hearts, as in the day of slaughter of sacrifices.

⁴ And the woman was arrayed in purple and scarlet colour and decked with gold and precious stones and pearls, having a golden cup in her hand full of abominations and of the filthiness of her fornication;

⁷ As much as she has glorified herself and lived deliciously, give her that much torment and sorrow; for she says in her heart, I sit a queen, and am no widow, and shall see no sorrow.

¹⁶ and saying, Alas, alas, that great city, that was clothed in fine linen and purple and scarlet and decked with gold and precious stones and pearls!

⁸ He raises up the poor out of the dust and lifts up the beggar from the dunghill to set them among princes and to make them inherit the throne of glory. For the pillars of the earth are the LORD’s, and he has set the world upon them.

⁷ ¶ So Satan went forth from the presence of the LORD and smote Job with sore boils from the sole of his foot unto the crown of his head.

¹⁹ Koph Many are the afflictions of the righteous, but the LORD shall deliver him out of them all,

¹⁴ and been plagued all day long and chastened every morning:

⁶ From the sole of the foot even unto the head there is no soundness in him; but wounds, and bruises, and putrefying sores: they have not been closed, neither bound up, neither mollified with ointment.

²² Is there no balm in Gilead; is there no physician there? Why then was there no medicine for the daughter of my people?

²¹ and desiring to be fed with the crumbs which fell from the rich man’s table: moreover the dogs came and licked his sores.

³⁵ ¶ And it came to pass that as he came near unto Jericho, a certain blind man sat beside the way begging, ³⁶ and hearing the multitude pass by, he asked what this might be. ³⁷ And they told him that Jesus of Nazareth passes by. ³⁸ And he cried out, saying, Jesus, thou Son of David, have mercy on me. ³⁹ And those who went before rebuked him that he should remain silent; but he cried out so much the more, Thou Son of David, have mercy on me. ⁴⁰ And Jesus stopped and commanded him to be brought unto him, and when he was come near, he asked him, ⁴¹ saying, What wilt thou that I shall do unto thee? And he said, Lord, that I may see. ⁴² And Jesus said unto him, See; thy faith has saved thee. ⁴³ And immediately he saw and followed him, glorifying God; and all the people, when they saw it, gave praise unto God.

¹ ¶ Now a certain man was sick, named Lazarus, of Bethany, the town of Mary and her sister Martha.

⁹ Let the brother of low degree rejoice in his high status;

²⁷ And she said, Yes, Lord, yet the little dogs eat of the crumbs which fall from their masters’ table.

²⁸ And she answered and said unto him, Yes, Lord, but even the dogs under the table eat of the children’s crumbs.

¹² When they were filled, he said unto his disciples, Gather up the fragments that remain that nothing be lost.

¹¹ Even unto this present hour we both hunger and thirst and are ill clad and are buffeted and have no certain dwellingplace

²⁷ in labour and travail, in many watches, in hunger and thirst, in many fasts, in cold and nakedness.

³⁴ And he entered in, and after he ate and drank, he said, Go, see now this cursed woman and bury her; for after all she is a king’s daughter. ³⁵ But when they went to bury her, they found no more of her than the skull and the feet and the palms of her hands.

¹³ For now I should have lain still and been quiet; I should have slept; then I would have been at rest, ¹⁴ with the kings and the counsellors of the earth, who built desolate places for themselves; ¹⁵ or with princes that had gold, who filled their houses with silver. ¹⁶ Or, why was I not hidden as an untimely birth, as infants who never saw light? ¹⁷ There the wicked cease from troubling; and there the weary are at rest. ¹⁸ There the prisoners rest together, they do not hear the voice of the oppressor. ¹⁹ The small and the great are there, and the slave is free from his master.

¹³ They spend their days in pleasure and in a moment go down to Sheol.

³⁰ That the wicked is reserved for the day of destruction, they shall be brought forth to the day of wrath. ³¹ Who shall declare his way to his face? And who shall repay him what he has done? ³² He shall yet be brought to the grave and shall remain in the tomb.

⁶ ¶ Those that trust in their wealth and boast themselves in the multitude of their riches; ⁷ none of them can by any means ransom his brother, nor give God an atonement for him; ⁸ (for the redemption of their soul is of great price, and they shall never pay it) ⁹ that he should still live for ever and not see corruption. ¹⁰ For he sees that all the wise men die, likewise the fool and the ignorant perish and leave their wealth to others. ¹¹ Their inward thought is that their houses are eternal and their dwelling places to all generations; they call their lands after their own names. ¹² Nevertheless man will not abide forever in honour; he is like the beasts that are cut off.

¹⁸ Surely thou didst set them in slippery places; in desolation thou shalt cause them to fall. ¹⁹ How they are brought into desolation, as in a moment! They have come to an end; they are utterly consumed with terrors. ²⁰ As the dream of one who awakes; so, O Lord, when thou shalt rise up, thou shalt despise their appearances.

¹¹ For he shall give his angels charge over thee to keep thee in all thy ways. ¹² They shall bear thee up in their hands lest thy foot stumble against a stone.

³² ¶ For his wickedness shall the wicked be cast out, but the righteous in his death has hope.

¹⁰ Then I also saw that the wicked who were buried came into remembrance more than those who had frequented the holy place, and these were forgotten in the city where they had worked uprightly. This also is vanity.

¹⁸ All the kings of the Gentiles, even all of them, lie in glory, each one in his own house.

¹⁶ What hast thou here? or whom hast thou here that thou hast hewed thee out a sepulchre here as he that hews himself out a sepulchre on a high place or that graves a habitation for himself in a rock?

¹ ¶ The righteous perishes, and no man lays it to heart: and merciful men are taken away, none considering that the righteous is taken away from the evil to come. ² He shall enter into peace: they shall rest in their beds, each one walking in his uprightness.

¹¹ But I say unto you, That many shall come from the east and west and shall sit down at the table with Abraham and Isaac and Jacob in the kingdom of the heavens.

³⁸ the field is the world; the good seed are the sons of the kingdom, but the tares are the sons of the wicked; ³⁹ and the enemy that sowed them is the devil; the harvest is the end of the age, and the reapers are the angels. ⁴⁰ As therefore the tares are gathered and burned in the fire, so shall it be in the end of this age. ⁴¹ The Son of man shall send forth his angels, and they shall gather out of his kingdom all things that offend and those who do iniquity ⁴² and shall cast them into the furnace of fire; there shall be wailing and gnashing of teeth. ⁴³ Then shall the righteous shine forth as the sun in the kingdom of their Father. He who has ears to hear, let him hear.

¹⁰ Take heed that ye despise not one of these little ones; for I say unto you, That in the heavens their angels always behold the face of my Father who is in the heavens.

³¹ And he shall send his angels with a trumpet and a great voice, and they shall gather together his elect from the four winds, from one end of heaven to the other.

³⁶ For what shall it profit a man, if he shall gain the whole world and lose his own soul?

²³ And one of his disciples, whom Jesus loved, was seated at the table beside Jesus.

²⁰ ¶ Then Peter, turning about, saw the disciple whom Jesus loved following, who also leaned on his breast at supper, and said, Lord, which is he that betrays thee?

¹⁴ Are they not all ministering spirits, sent forth in service for the love of those who are the heirs of saving health?

¹⁴ ¶ Forasmuch then as the children are partakers of flesh and blood, he also himself likewise took part of the same, that through death he might destroy him that had the empire of death, that is, the devil,

¹¹ For the sun is no sooner risen with a burning heat, but it withers the grass, and its flower falls, and the beautiful appearance of it perishes: so also shall the rich man fade away in his ways.

²⁴ he himself bore our sins in his own body on the tree, that we, being dead to sins, should live unto righteousness; by whose wound ye were healed.

¹³ ¶ And I heard a voice from heaven saying unto me, Write, Blessed are the dead who die in the Lord from now on; Yea, saith the Spirit, that they may rest from their labours, and their works do follow them.

¹⁷ The wicked shall be put into Sheol, all the Gentiles that forget God.

¹⁰ For thou wilt not leave my soul in Sheol; neither wilt thou suffer thy Merciful One to see corruption.

¹⁵ ¶ Surely God will ransom my soul from the hand of Sheol when he shall take me. Selah.

¹³ For great is thy mercy upon me, and thou hast delivered my soul from the lowest part of Sheol.

⁵ Her feet go down to death, her steps uphold Sheol,

²⁷ Her house is the way to Sheol, going down to the chambers of death.

¹⁸ But he does not know that the dead are there and that her guests are in the depths of Sheol.

²⁴ ¶ The way of life is uphill to the wise, that he may separate himself from Sheol below.

⁹ Sheol from beneath is aghast at thee; it stirs up the dead to meet thee at thy coming; it has raised up from their thrones all the princes of the earth, all the kings of the Gentiles.

¹⁵ Yet thou shalt be cast down to Sheol, to the sides of the pit.

²² but I say unto you, That whosoever is angry with his brother out of control shall be in danger of the judgment, and whosoever shall insult his brother shall be in danger of the council, but whosoever shall say, Thou art impious, shall be in danger of hell.

²⁹ Therefore if thy right eye should bring thee occasion to stumble, pluck it out and cast it from thee; for it is better for thee that one of thy members should perish, and not that thy whole body should be cast into hell.

¹¹ But I say unto you, That many shall come from the east and west and shall sit down at the table with Abraham and Isaac and Jacob in the kingdom of the heavens. ¹² But the sons of the kingdom shall be cast out into outer darkness; there shall be weeping and gnashing of teeth.

²⁹ And, behold, they cried out, saying, What have we to do with thee, Jesus, thou Son of God? Art thou come here to torment us before the time?

²³ And thou, Capernaum, which art exalted unto heaven, shalt be brought down to Hades, for if the mighty works which have been done in thee had been done in those of Sodom, it would have remained until this day.

⁹ And if thine eye causes thee to fall, pluck it out and cast it from thee; it is better for thee to enter into life with one eye, rather than having two eyes to be cast into the hell of fire.

³³ Ye serpents, ye generation of vipers, how can ye escape the judgment of hell?

²⁸ When he saw Jesus, he cried out and fell down before him and with a loud voice said, What have I to do with thee, Jesus, thou Son of God most high? I beseech thee, torment me not.

²⁸ In that place shall be weeping and gnashing of teeth when ye shall see Abraham and Isaac and Jacob and all the prophets in the kingdom of God, and you yourselves thrust out. ²⁹ And others shall come from the east and from the west and from the north and from the south and shall sit at the table in the kingdom of God.

²⁸ for I have five brethren; that he may testify unto them, lest they also come into this place of torment.

⁵⁵ O death, where is thy sting? O Hades, where is thy victory?

⁴ For if God did not forgive the angels that sinned, but cast them down into the deepest abyss {Gr. Tartarus} and delivered them into chains of darkness, to be reserved unto judgment;

¹⁰ the same shall drink of the wine of the wrath of God, which is poured out without mixture into the cup of his indignation; and he shall be tormented with fire and brimstone in the presence of the holy angels and in the presence of the Lamb; ¹¹ and the smoke of their torment ascends up for ever and ever; and those that worship the beast and its image and whosoever receives the mark of its name, have no rest day or night.

¹⁰ And the devil that deceived them was cast into the lake of fire and brimstone, where the beast and the false prophet are, and they shall be tormented day and night for ever and ever.

¹³ And the sea gave up the dead which were in it; and death and Hades delivered up the dead which were in them; and the judgment of each one was according to their works. ¹⁴ And Hades and death were cast into the lake of fire. This is the second death.

¹⁶ Then Samuel said, Why then dost thou ask of me, seeing the LORD is departed from thee, and is become thy enemy?

¹¹ When its boughs are withered, they shall be broken off: women shall come and set them on fire: for this is not a people of understanding: therefore he that made them will not have mercy on them, and he that formed them will show them no favour.

¹⁷ The poor and needy seek the waters that are not; their tongue fails for thirst; I the LORD will hear them; I the God of Israel will not forsake them. ¹⁸ I will open rivers in high places and fountains in the midst of the plains; I will turn the wilderness into pools of water and the dry land into springs of water.

¹³ Therefore thus has the Lord GOD said, Behold, my slaves shall eat, but ye shall be hungry; behold, my slaves shall drink, but ye shall be thirsty; behold, my slaves shall rejoice, but ye shall be ashamed: ¹⁴ Behold, my slaves shall rejoice by the joy of their heart, but ye shall cry for the sorrow of your heart and shall howl for the destruction of spirit.

²⁴ And they shall go forth and look upon the carcasses of the men that rebelled against me; for their worm shall not die, neither shall their fire be quenched; and they shall be an abhorring unto all flesh.

¹² And this shall be the plague with which the LORD will smite all the peoples that fought against Jerusalem; Their flesh shall consume away while they stand upon their feet, and their eyes shall consume away in their holes, and their tongue shall consume away in their mouth.

⁹ and think not to say within yourselves, We have Abraham as our father, for I say unto you that God is able to raise up children unto Abraham of these stones.

⁴¹ Then he shall also say unto those who shall be on the left hand, Depart from me, ye cursed, into eternal fire, prepared for the devil and his angels;

⁴³ And if thy hand causes thee to fall, cut it off; it is better for thee to enter into life maimed than having two hands to go into hell, into the fire that can never be quenched, ⁴⁴ where their worm does not die, and the fire is never quenched. ⁴⁵ And if thy foot causes thee to fall, cut it off; it is better for thee to enter halt into life than having two feet to be cast into hell, into the fire that can never be quenched, ⁴⁶ where their worm does not die, and the fire is never quenched. ⁴⁷ And if thine eye causes thee to fall, pluck it out; it is better for thee to enter into the kingdom of God with one eye than having two eyes to be cast into hell, ⁴⁸ where their worm does not die, and the fire is never quenched. ⁴⁹ For every one shall be salted with fire, and every sacrifice shall be salted with salt.

⁸ Bring forth therefore fruits worthy of repentance and begin not to say within yourselves, We have Abraham for our father; for I say unto you, That God is able of these stones to raise up children unto Abraham.

³⁰ And he said, No, father Abraham; but if one went unto them from the dead, they will repent.

¹⁰ Jesus answered and said unto her, If thou knewest the gift of God and who it is that saith to thee, Give me to drink, thou wouldest have asked of him, and he would have given thee living water.

¹⁴ but whosoever drinks of the water that I shall give him shall never thirst, but the water that I shall give him shall be in him a fountain of water springing up into eternal life.

³⁷ ¶ In the last day, that great day of the feast, Jesus stood and cried out, saying, If any man thirsts, let him come unto me and drink.

³³ They answered him, We are Abraham’s seed, and we have never served anyone; how sayest thou, Ye shall be set free? ³⁴ Jesus answered them, Verily, verily, I say unto you, Whosoever commits sin is the slave of sin. ³⁵ And the slave does not abide in the house for ever, but the Son abides for ever. ³⁶ If the Son therefore shall set you free, ye shall be free indeed. ³⁷ I know that ye are Abraham’s seed, but ye seek to kill me because my word has no place in you. ³⁸ ¶ I speak that which I have seen with my Father, and ye do that which ye have seen with your father. ³⁹ They answered and said unto him, Abraham is our father. Jesus said unto them, If ye were Abraham’s sons, ye would do the works of Abraham.

⁵³ Art thou greater than our father Abraham who died? and the prophets died; whom makest thou thyself? ⁵⁴ Jesus answered, If I glorify myself, my glory is nothing; it is my Father that glorifies me, of whom ye say that he is your God; ⁵⁵ yet ye have not known him, but I know him; and if I should say, I do not know him, I shall be a liar like unto you; but I know him and keep his word. ⁵⁶ Your father Abraham rejoiced to see my day, and he saw it and was glad.

¹² that he be the father of the circumcision: not only to those who are of the circumcision, but also unto those who walk in the steps of the faith that was in our father Abraham before he was circumcised.

⁷ neither, because they are the seed of Abraham, are all sons, but, In Isaac shall thy seed be called. ⁸ That is, Those who are sons of the flesh, these are not the sons of God; but those who are sons of the promise are counted in the generation.

⁸ with flaming fire, to take vengeance on those that do not know God and do not obey the gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ,

¹³ For judgment without mercy shall be done unto the one that has shown no mercy; and mercy boasts against judgment.

⁶ And the tongue is a fire, a world of iniquity: so is the tongue among our members, that it defiles the whole body and sets on fire the course of our nature; and it is set on fire of hell.

¹⁶ They shall hunger no more neither thirst anymore; neither shall the sun be thrust upon them nor any other heat. ¹⁷ For the Lamb which is in the midst of the throne shall govern them and shall lead them unto living fountains of waters, and God shall wipe away all tears from their eyes.

²⁰ And the beast was taken and with it the false prophet that wrought miracles in its presence, with which he had deceived those that had taken the mark of the beast and had worshipped its image. These two were cast alive into the lake of fire burning with brimstone.

¹⁵ And whosoever was not found written in the book of life was cast into the lake of fire.

¹ ¶ And he showed me a pure river of water of life, clear as crystal, proceeding out of the throne of God and of the Lamb.

¹³ They spend their days in pleasure and in a moment go down to Sheol. ¹⁴ Therefore, they say unto God, Depart from us; for we do not desire the knowledge of thy ways.

¹⁸ He had filled their houses with good things. Therefore, the counsel of the wicked is far from me.

³⁵ Resh I have seen the wicked in great power and spreading himself like a green bay tree. ³⁶ Yet he passed away, and, behold, he was not: I sought him, but he could not be found.

¹¹ Their inward thought is that their houses are eternal and their dwelling places to all generations; they call their lands after their own names.

⁷ Their eyes stand out with fatness; they easily obtain the desires of their heart.

¹² Behold, these ungodly men, without being troubled by the world obtain riches. ¹³ Verily, in vain have I cleansed my heart and washed my hands in innocency ¹⁴ and been plagued all day long and chastened every morning: ¹⁵ ¶ If I should say, I will speak as they do; behold, I should deny the generation of thy sons. ¹⁶ I shall meditate that I might understand this; it is very hard for me to see. ¹⁷ When I come into the sanctuary of God, then I shall understand their end. ¹⁸ Surely thou didst set them in slippery places; in desolation thou shalt cause them to fall. ¹⁹ How they are brought into desolation, as in a moment! They have come to an end; they are utterly consumed with terrors.

⁷ Zain Jerusalem remembered the days of her affliction and of her rebellions and of all her desirable things that she had in the times of old when her people fell into the hand of the enemy, and no one helped her; the enemies saw her and mocked at her days of rest.

²² And thou his son, O Belshazzar, hast not humbled thine heart, though thou knewest all this; ²³ but hast lifted up thyself against the Lord of heaven; and they have brought the vessels of his house before thee, and thou and thy princes, thy wives and thy concubines, have drunk wine in them; furthermore, thou hast praised gods of silver and of gold, of brass, of iron, of wood, and of stone, which do not see, nor hear, nor know; and the God in whose hand is thy soul and whose are all thy ways, thou hast never honoured.

³⁰ ¶ That same night Belshazzar the king of the Chaldeans was slain.

⁴⁵ And if thy foot causes thee to fall, cut it off; it is better for thee to enter halt into life than having two feet to be cast into hell, into the fire that can never be quenched,

²⁴ But woe unto you that are rich! for ye have received your consolation.

²³ and in Hades he lifted up his eyes, being in torments, and saw Abraham afar off and Lazarus in his bosom.

³³ These things I have spoken unto you that in me ye might have peace. In the world ye shall have tribulation; but be of good cheer; I have overcome the world.

²² confirming the souls of the disciples and exhorting them to remain in the faith, and that we must through much tribulation enter into the kingdom of God.

⁷ because the prudence of the flesh is enmity against God; for it does not subject itself to the law of God, neither indeed can it.

³ that no one should be moved in these tribulations, for you know that we are appointed for this.

²⁵ choosing rather to suffer affliction with the people of God than to enjoy the pleasures of sin for a season,

¹⁵ Love not the world neither the things that are in the world. If anyone loves the world, the charity of the Father is not in him.

¹⁴ And I said unto him, lord, thou knowest. And he said to me, These are those who came out of great tribulation and have washed their long robes, and made them white in the blood of the Lamb.

³⁶ ¶ And Abigail came to Nabal, and, behold, he held a banquet in his house like the banquet of a king; and Nabal’s heart was merry within him, for he was very drunken; therefore, she told him nothing, less or more, until the morning light.

¹⁴ Like sheep they are laid in Sheol; death shall feed on them, and the upright shall have dominion over them in the morning, and their beauty shall be consumed in the grave from their dwelling.

²² Now consider this, ye that forget God, lest I take you away, and there be none to deliver.

²⁴ And there shall no longer be a pricking brier unto the house of Israel, nor any thorn that causes him pain, round about them of those that despise them; and they shall know that I am the Lord GOD.

¹⁸ Therefore become ye converted, and ye shall make a difference between the just and the wicked, between him that serves God and him that did not serve him.

⁴⁶ And they shall go away into eternal punishment, but the righteous into eternal life.

⁵⁹ I tell thee, in no wise shalt thou come out of there until thou hast paid the very last mite.

³⁶ He that believes in the Son has eternal life, and he that does not obey the Son shall not see life, but the wrath of God abides on him.

⁴ so that we ourselves glory in you in the congregations {Gr. ekklesia – called out ones} of God for your patience and faith in all your persecutions and tribulations that ye endure and ⁵ ¶ in testimony of the just judgment of God, that ye may be counted worthy of the kingdom of God, for which ye also suffer, ⁶ seeing it is a just thing with God to recompense tribulation to those that trouble you ⁷ and to give you, who are troubled, rest with us, when the Lord Jesus shall be revealed from heaven with the angels of his power, ⁸ with flaming fire, to take vengeance on those that do not know God and do not obey the gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ, ⁹ who shall be punished with eternal destruction by the presence of the Lord and by the glory of his power, ¹⁰ when he shall come to be glorified in his saints and to be admired in all those that believe (because our testimony among you was believed) in that day. ¹¹ For the sun is no sooner risen with a burning heat, but it withers the grass, and its flower falls, and the beautiful appearance of it perishes: so also shall the rich man fade away in his ways. ¹² Blessed is the man that patiently endures temptation: for when he is tried, he shall receive the crown of life, which the Lord has promised to those that love him.

¹¹ He that is unjust, let him be unjust still; and he who is filthy, let him be filthy still; and he that is righteous, let him be justified still; and let the saint be sanctified still.

¹² Nevertheless man will not abide forever in honour; he is like the beasts that are cut off. ¹³ This their way is their folly; yet their posterity approve their sayings. Selah.

⁴⁰ And with many other words he testified and exhorted, saying, Be saved from this perverse generation.

²³ except that the Holy Spirit witnesses in every city, saying that prisons and tribulations await me.

⁶ that no one oppress and defraud his brother in any matter because the Lord is the avenger of all such, as we also have forewarned you and testified.

²⁰ To the law and to the testimony! If they do not speak according to this word, it is because there is no light in them.

¹⁶ Seek ye out that which is written in the book of the LORD and read; if one of these is lacking, none is missing with his mate, for his mouth has commanded it, and his same Spirit has gathered them.

² But unto you that fear my name shall the Sun of righteousness be born, and in his wings he shall bring saving health; and ye shall go forth and jump like calves of the herd. ³ And ye shall tread down the wicked; for they shall be ashes under the soles of your feet in the day that I make, said the LORD of the hosts. ⁴ ¶ Remember ye the law of Moses my slave, which I commanded unto him in Horeb statutes and my rights over all Israel.

¹⁷ And there was delivered unto him the book of the prophet Isaiah. And when he had opened the book, he found the place where it was written,

¹⁶ The law and the prophets were until John; since that time the kingdom of God is preached, and whosoever will presses into it.

²⁷ And beginning at Moses and all the prophets, he expounded this unto them in all the scriptures concerning himself.

³⁹ Search the scriptures, for in them ye think ye have eternal life; and they are those who testify of me. ⁴⁰ And ye will not come to me, that ye might have life. ⁴¹ I do not receive glory from men. ⁴² But I know you that ye have not the love of God in you. ⁴³ I have come in my Father’s name, and ye receive me not; if another shall come in his own name, him ye will receive. ⁴⁴ How can ye believe, who take glory one from another, and seek not the glory that comes only from God? ⁴⁵ Do not think that I will accuse you to the Father; there is one that accuses you, even Moses, in whom ye trust. ⁴⁶ For had ye believed Moses, ye would have believed me, for he wrote of me. ⁴⁷ But if ye do not believe his writings, how shall ye believe my words?

²¹ For Moses of old time has in every city those that preach him, being read in the synagogues every sabbath day.

¹¹ These were more noble than those in Thessalonica, in that they received the word with all diligence and searched the scriptures daily, whether those things were so. ¹² Therefore many of them believed, also of honourable women who were Greeks and of men, not a few.

¹⁵ and that from a child thou hast known the holy scriptures, which are able to make thee wise unto saving health by the faith which is in Christ Jesus. ¹⁶ All scripture is given by inspiration of God and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness, ¹⁷ that the man of God may be perfect, thoroughly furnished unto all good works.

¹⁹ ¶ We have also the most sure word of the prophets, unto which ye do well that ye take heed, as unto a light that shines in a dark place, until the day dawns and the morning star arises in your hearts, ²⁰ understanding this first, that no prophecy of the scripture is of any private interpretation. ²¹ For the prophecy did not come in times past by the will of man, but the holy men of God spoke being inspired by the Holy Spirit.

³ I tell you, No; but, except ye repent, ye shall all likewise perish.

²⁴ And he cried and said, Father Abraham, have mercy on me and send Lazarus that he may dip the tip of his finger in water and cool my tongue; for I am tormented in this flame.

⁹ And men were scorched with great heat, and blasphemed the name of God, who has authority over these plagues; and they did not repent to give him glory. ¹⁰ And the fifth angel poured out his vial upon the throne of the beast; and its kingdom was filled with darkness; and they gnawed their tongues for pain, ¹¹ and blasphemed the God of the heaven because of their pains and their sores and did not repent of their deeds.

²⁷ God shall enlarge Japheth, and he shall dwell in the tents of Shem; and Canaan shall be his slave.

⁴³ And having said these things, he cried with a loud voice, Lazarus, come forth. ⁴⁴ Then he that had been dead came forth, bound hand and foot with graveclothes, and his face was bound about with a napkin. Jesus said unto them, Loose him, and let him go. ⁴⁵ ¶ Then many of the Jews who had come to Mary and had seen what Jesus did believed on him. ⁴⁶ But some of them went unto the Pharisees and told them what Jesus had done. ⁴⁷ Then the high priests and the Pharisees gathered a council and said, What shall we do? for this man does many signs. ⁴⁸ If we let him thus alone, everyone will believe on him, and the Romans shall come and take away both our place and the nation. ⁴⁹ And one of them, named Caiaphas, being the high priest that same year, said unto them, Ye know nothing at all ⁵⁰ nor consider that it is expedient for us that one man should die for the people, and not that the whole nation be lost. ⁵¹ And this he spoke not of himself; but being high priest that year, he prophesied that Jesus should die for the nation; ⁵² and not for that nation only, but that he should also gather together in one the sons of God that were scattered abroad. ⁵³ So that from that day forth they took counsel together to kill him.

¹⁰ So the princes of the priests took counsel that they might also put Lazarus to death ¹¹ because by reason of him many of the Jews went away and believed on Jesus.

⁸ ¶ And he went into the synagogue and spoke freely for the space of three months, disputing and persuading the things concerning the kingdom of God.

²⁸ Then Agrippa said unto Paul, Almost thou persuadest me to be a Christian.

²³ ¶ And when they had appointed him a day, many came to him into his lodging, to whom he expounded and testified the kingdom of God, procuring to persuade them of that concerning Jesus, the Christ, out of the law of Moses and out of the prophets, from morning until evening.

³ But if our gospel is hid, it is hid to those that are lost,

¹¹ Therefore being certain of that terror of the Lord, we persuade men; but we are made manifest unto God, and I trust also are made manifest in your consciences.
