² Why do thy disciples transgress the tradition of the elders? For they do not wash their hands when they eat bread.

¹⁴ ¶ And God said, Let there be lights in the firmament of the heavens to divide the day from the night; and let them be for signs and for appointed times and for days and years;

² who upon seeing some of his disciples eat bread with common, that is to say, with unwashed, hands, they condemned them.

⁵ Then the Pharisees and scribes asked him, Why do thy disciples not walk according to the tradition of the elders but eat bread with unwashed hands?

³⁸ And when the Pharisee saw it, he marvelled that he had not first washed before dinner.

⁸ Beware lest any man spoil you through philosophy and vain deceit, after the traditions of men, according to the elements of the world, and not after Christ.

²⁰ For if ye are dead with the Christ to the elements of the world, why, as though living unto the world, do ye decree rites, ²¹ touch not; taste not; handle not? ²² Which all perish with the using, because they are the commandments and doctrines of men, ²³ which things have indeed a show of wisdom in will worship and humility and neglecting of the body, but they have absolutely no value against the appetites of the flesh.
