¹ ¶ In those days came John the Baptist, preaching in the wilderness of Judaea ² and saying, Repent ye, for the kingdom of heaven is at hand. ³ For this is he that was spoken of by the prophet Isaiah, who said, The voice of one crying in the wilderness, Prepare ye the way of the Lord; make his paths straight. ⁴ And the same John had his raiment of camel’s hair and a leathern girdle about his loins, and his food was locusts and wild honey. ⁵ Then Jerusalem and all Judaea and all the region round about Jordan went out to him ⁶ and were baptized of him in the Jordan, confessing their sins. ⁷ ¶ But when he saw many of the Pharisees and Sadducees come to his baptism, he said unto them, O generation of vipers, who taught you to flee from the wrath to come? ⁸ Bring forth therefore fruits worthy of repentance ⁹ and think not to say within yourselves, We have Abraham as our father, for I say unto you that God is able to raise up children unto Abraham of these stones. ¹⁰ And now the axe is also laid unto the root of the trees; therefore, every tree which does not bring forth good fruit is hewn down and cast into the fire. ¹¹ I indeed baptize you in water unto repentance, but he that comes after me is mightier than I, whose shoes I am not worthy to bear; he shall baptize you in the Holy Spirit and fire, ¹² whose fan is in his hand; and he will thoroughly purge his threshing floor and gather his wheat into the storehouse, but he will burn up the chaff with fire that shall never be quenched. ¹³ ¶ Then Jesus came from Galilee to Jordan unto John to be baptized of him. ¹⁴ But John resisted him much, saying, I have need to be baptized of thee, and comest thou to me? ¹⁵ And Jesus answering said unto him, Suffer it to be so now, for thus it is expedient for us to fulfil all righteousness. Then he suffered him. ¹⁶ And Jesus, after he was baptized, went up straightway out of the water; and, behold, the heavens were opened unto him, and he saw the Spirit of God descending like a dove and lighting upon him; ¹⁷ and, behold, a voice from the heavens, saying, This is my beloved Son, in whom I am well pleased.

¹⁰ And now, behold, the LORD has caused me to live, as he said, these forty-five years from the time that the LORD spoke these words unto Moses, while Israel has walked in the wilderness; and now, behold, I am this day eighty-five years old.

⁶¹ in the wilderness, Betharabah, Middin, Secacah, ⁶² Nibshan, the city of Salt, and Engedi: six cities with their villages.

¹⁶ And the sons of the Kenite, Moses’ father-in-law, went up out of the city of palm trees with the sons of Judah into the wilderness of Judah which is towards the Negev of Arad; and they went and dwelt among the people.

³ ¶ The voice of him that cries in the wilderness, Prepare ye the way of the LORD; make straight in the desert a highway for our God. ⁴ Every valley shall be exalted, and every mountain and hill shall be made low; and the crooked shall be made straight, and the rough places made plain: ⁵ And the glory of the LORD shall be manifested, and all flesh shall see it together, for the mouth of the LORD has spoken it. ⁶ The voice that said, Cry. And I said, What shall I cry? All flesh is grass, and all the mercy thereof is as the open flower of the field:

⁸ Bring forth therefore fruits worthy of repentance

⁷ ¶ And as they departed, Jesus began to say unto the multitudes concerning John, What did you go out into the wilderness to see? A reed shaken with the wind?

¹¹ Verily I say unto you, Among those that are born of women there has not risen a greater than John the Baptist; notwithstanding, he that is least in the kingdom of the heavens is greater than he.

² and said unto his slaves, This is John the Baptist; he is risen from the dead, and therefore mighty works do show forth themselves in him. ³ For Herod had laid hold on John and bound him and put him in prison for Herodias’ sake, his brother Philip’s wife. ⁴ For John said unto him, It is not lawful for thee to have her. ⁵ And when he would have put him to death, he feared the multitude because they counted him as a prophet. ⁶ But when Herod’s birthday was kept, the daughter of Herodias danced before them and pleased Herod. ⁷ Whereupon he promised with an oath to give her whatever she would ask. ⁸ And she, being before instructed of her mother, said, Give me here John the Baptist’s head in a platter. ⁹ And the king was sorry; nevertheless because of the oath and of those who sat with him at the table, he commanded it to be given her. ¹⁰ And he sent and beheaded John in the prison. ¹¹ And his head was brought in a platter and given to the damsel, and she brought it to her mother. ¹² And his disciples came and took up the body and buried it and went and told Jesus. ¹³ ¶ When Jesus heard of it, he departed from there by ship into a desert place apart; and when the people had heard of it, they followed him on foot out of the cities. ¹⁴ And Jesus went forth and saw a great multitude and was moved with compassion toward them, and he healed their sick.

¹⁴ And they said, Some say that thou art John the Baptist; some, Elijah; and others, Jeremiah or one of the prophets.

¹² But I say unto you, That Elijah is come already, and they knew him not, but have done unto him whatever they pleased. Likewise the Son of man shall also suffer of them. ¹³ Then the disciples understood that he spoke unto them of John the Baptist.

²⁵ The baptism of John, where was it from? from heaven or of men? And they reasoned with themselves, saying, If we shall say, From heaven, he will say unto us, Why did ye not then believe him? ²⁶ But if we shall say, Of men, we fear the people; for all hold John as a prophet. ²⁷ And they answered Jesus and said, We cannot tell. And he said unto them, Neither do I tell you by what authority I do these things.

³² For John came unto you in the way of righteousness, and ye believed him not, but the publicans and the harlots believed him, and ye, when ye had seen it, repented not afterward that ye might believe him.

³ The voice of one crying in the wilderness, Prepare ye the way of the Lord; make his paths straight. ⁴ John baptized in the wilderness and preached the baptism of repentance for remission of sins. ⁵ And there went out unto him all the land of Judaea and those of Jerusalem and were all baptized of him in the river of Jordan, confessing their sins. ⁶ John was clothed with camel’s hair and with a girdle of a skin about his loins; and he ate locusts and wild honey ⁷ and preached, saying, There comes one mightier than I after me, the latchet of whose shoes I am not worthy to stoop down and unloose. ⁸ I indeed have baptized you with water, but he shall baptize you with the Holy Spirit.

¹⁵ and saying, The time is fulfilled, and the kingdom of God is at hand; repent ye and believe the gospel.

¹⁶ But when Herod heard of it, he said, This is John, whom I beheaded: he is risen from the dead. ¹⁷ For Herod himself had sent forth and laid hold upon John and bound him in prison for Herodias’ sake, his brother Philip’s wife, for he had married her. ¹⁸ For John had said unto Herod, It is not lawful for thee to have thy brother’s wife. ¹⁹ Therefore Herodias had a quarrel against him and would have killed him, but she could not; ²⁰ for Herod feared John, knowing that he was a just and holy man, and respected him; and when he heard him, he did many things and heard him gladly. ²¹ And when a convenient day was come, that Herod on his birthday made a supper to his princes and tribunes and to the principal people of Galilee; ²² and when the daughter of Herodias came in and danced and pleased Herod and those that sat with him, the king said unto the damsel, Ask of me whatsoever thou wilt, and I will give it unto thee. ²³ And he swore unto her, Whatsoever thou shalt ask of me, I will give it unto thee, unto the half of my kingdom. ²⁴ And she went forth, and said unto her mother, What shall I ask? And she said, The head of John the Baptist. ²⁵ And she came in with haste unto the king and asked, saying, I will that thou give me immediately in a platter the head of John the Baptist. ²⁶ And the king was exceeding sorry, yet for his oath’s sake and for the sakes of those who sat with him, he would not reject her. ²⁷ And straightway the king sent an executioner and commanded his head to be brought, and he went and beheaded him in the prison ²⁸ and brought his head in a platter and gave it to the damsel, and the damsel gave it to her mother. ²⁹ And when his disciples heard of it, they came and took up his corpse and laid it in a tomb.

¹³ But the angel said unto him, Fear not, Zacharias, for thy prayer is heard; and thy wife Elisabeth shall bear thee a son, and thou shalt call his name John. ¹⁴ And thou shalt have joy and gladness; and many shall rejoice at his birth. ¹⁵ For he shall be great in the sight of the Lord and shall drink neither wine nor strong drink; and he shall be filled with the Holy Spirit, even from his mother’s womb. ¹⁶ And he shall turn many of the sons of Israel to the Lord their God. ¹⁷ And he shall go before him in the spirit and power of Elijah to turn the hearts of the fathers to the children and the rebellious to the prudence of the just, to make ready a prepared people for the Lord.

⁷⁶ And thou, child, shalt be called prophet of the Most High, for thou shalt go before the face of the Lord to prepare his ways,

¹ ¶ Now in the fifteenth year of the reign of Tiberius Caesar, Pontius Pilate being governor of Judaea, and Herod being tetrarch of Galilee, and his brother Philip tetrarch of Ituraea and of the region of Trachonitis, and Lysanias the tetrarch of Abilene, ² Annas and Caiaphas being the high priests, the word of God came upon John the son of Zachariah in the wilderness. ³ And he came into all the country about Jordan, preaching the baptism of repentance for the remission of sins; ⁴ as it is written in the book of the words of Isaiah the prophet, saying, The voice of one crying in the wilderness, Prepare ye the way of the Lord; make his paths straight. ⁵ Every valley shall be filled, and every mountain and hill shall be brought low, and the crooked ways shall be made straight, and the rough ways shall be made smooth; ⁶ and all flesh shall see the saving health of God. ⁷ Then said he to the multitude that came forth to be baptized of him, O generation of vipers, who taught you to flee from the wrath to come? ⁸ Bring forth therefore fruits worthy of repentance and begin not to say within yourselves, We have Abraham for our father; for I say unto you, That God is able of these stones to raise up children unto Abraham. ⁹ And now also the axe is laid unto the root of the trees; every tree therefore which does not bring forth good fruit is hewn down and cast into the fire. ¹⁰ And the people asked him, saying, What shall we do then? ¹¹ He answered and said unto them, He that has two coats, let him impart to him that has none; and he that has food, let him do likewise. ¹² Then the publicans also came to be baptized and said unto him, Master, what shall we do? ¹³ And he said unto them, Exact no more than that which is appointed you. ¹⁴ And the soldiers likewise demanded of him, saying, And what shall we do? And he said unto them, Oppress no one, neither accuse anyone falsely; and be content with your wages. ¹⁵ ¶ And as the people were in expectation, and all men mused in their hearts of John, whether he were the Christ, or not, ¹⁶ John answered, saying unto them all, I indeed baptize you in water, but one mightier than I comes, the latchet of whose shoes I am not worthy to unloose; he shall baptize you in the Holy Spirit and fire; ¹⁷ whose fan is in his hand, and he will thoroughly purge his threshing floor and will gather the wheat into his storehouse, but the chaff he will burn with fire unquenchable. ¹⁸ And exhorting many other things he announced the gospel unto the people. ¹⁹ Then Herod the tetrarch, being reproved by him for Herodias his brother Philip’s wife and for all the evils which Herod had done, ²⁰ added yet this above all, that he shut up John in prison.

²⁴ And when the messengers of John were departed, he began to speak unto the people concerning John, What went ye out into the wilderness to see? A reed shaken by the wind?

⁶ There was a man sent from God, whose name was John. ⁷ The same came for a witness, to bear witness of the Light, that all men through him might believe. ⁸ He was not the Light, but was sent to bear witness of the Light.

¹⁵ ¶ John bore witness of him and cried, saying, This is he of whom I spoke, He that comes after me is preferred before me, for he was before me. ¹⁶ And of his fullness we have all received, and grace for grace. ¹⁷ For the law was given through Moses, but the grace and the truth of God came through Jesus, the Christ. ¹⁸ No man has seen God at any time; the only begotten Son, which is in the bosom of the Father, he has declared him. ¹⁹ ¶ And this is the testimony of John, when the Jews sent priests and Levites from Jerusalem to ask him, Who art thou? ²⁰ And he confessed and denied not, but confessed, I am not the Christ. ²¹ And they asked him, What then? Art thou Elijah? And he said, I am not. Art thou the prophet? And he answered, No. ²² Then said they unto him, Who art thou? that we may give an answer to those that sent us. What sayest thou of thyself? ²³ He said, I am the voice of one crying in the wilderness, Make straight the way of the Lord, as said the prophet Isaiah. ²⁴ And those who were sent were of the Pharisees. ²⁵ And they asked him and said unto him, Why dost thou baptize then if thou art not the Christ, nor Elijah, nor the prophet? ²⁶ John answered them, saying, I baptize with water, but there stands one among you, whom ye know not; ²⁷ he it is, who coming after me is preferred before me, whose shoe’s latchet I am not worthy to unloose. ²⁸ These things were done in Bethabara beyond Jordan, where John was baptizing. ²⁹ ¶ The next day John saw Jesus coming unto him and said, Behold the Lamb of God, who takes away the sin of the world. ³⁰ This is he of whom I said, After me comes a man who is preferred before me, for he was before me. ³¹ And I knew him not; but that he should be made manifest to Israel, therefore am I come baptizing with water. ³² And John gave testimony, saying, I saw the Spirit descending from heaven like a dove, and it abode upon him. ³³ And I knew him not; but he that sent me to baptize with water, the same said unto me, Upon whom thou shalt see the Spirit descending and abiding on him, the same is he who baptizes with the Holy Spirit. ³⁴ And I have seen and have given testimony that this is the Son of God. ³⁵ And again the next day John stood, and two of his disciples, ³⁶ and looking upon Jesus as he walked, he said, Behold the Lamb of God!

²⁷ John answered and said, A man can receive nothing except it is given him from the heaven. ²⁸ Ye yourselves are my witnesses that I said, I am not the Christ, but that I am sent before him. ²⁹ He that has the bride is the bridegroom, but the friend of the bridegroom, who stands and hears him, rejoices greatly because of the bridegroom’s voice; this my joy therefore is fulfilled. ³⁰ It is expedient unto him to increase, but unto me, to decrease. ³¹ He that comes from above is above all; he that is of the earth is earthly and speaks earthly things: he that comes from heaven is above all. ³² And what he has seen and heard, that he testifies; and no one receives his testimony. ³³ He that has received his testimony has set to his seal that God is true. ³⁴ For he whom God has sent speaks the words of God; for God does not give the Spirit by measure unto him. ³⁵ The Father loves the Son and has given all things into his hand. ³⁶ He that believes in the Son has eternal life, and he that does not obey the Son shall not see life, but the wrath of God abides on him.

²² beginning from the baptism of John unto that same day that he was received on high from among us, that one must be ordained to be a witness with us of his resurrection.

²⁴ John, having first proclaimed before his coming, the baptism of repentance to all the people of Israel. ²⁵ And as John fulfilled his course, he said, Whom think ye that I am? I am not he. But, behold, there comes one after me, whose shoes of his feet I am not worthy to loose.

³ And he said unto them, Into what then were ye baptized? And they said, Into John’s baptism. ⁴ Then said Paul, John verily baptized with the baptism of repentance, saying unto the people that they should believe on him who should come after him, that is, on Christ, Jesus.

⁴⁷ and they return unto their heart in the land where they were carried captives and return and make supplication unto thee in the land of those that carried them captives, saying, We have sinned and have done iniquity, we have committed wickedness;

⁶ Therefore, I abhor myself and repent in dust and ashes.

³⁰ ¶ Therefore I will judge you, O house of Israel, each one according to his ways, said the Lord GOD. Repent and turn yourselves from all your iniquities, so iniquity shall not be your ruin. ³¹ Cast away from you all your iniquities by which ye have rebelled, and make yourselves a new heart and a new spirit; for why will ye die, O house of Israel? ³² For I do not desire the death of him that dies, said the Lord GOD; therefore turn yourselves, and ye shall live.

¹¹ Say unto them, As I live, said the Lord GOD, I do not desire the death of the wicked but that the wicked turn from his way and that he live; turn ye, turn ye from your evil ways; for why will ye die, O house of Israel?

⁴⁴ And in the days of those kings the God of heaven shall raise up a kingdom which eternally shall never become corrupted, and this kingdom shall not be left to another people, but it shall break in pieces and consume all these kingdoms, and it shall stand for ever.

¹⁷ From that time Jesus began to preach and to say, Repent, for the kingdom of the heavens is at hand.

³ ¶ Blessed are the poor in spirit, for theirs is the kingdom of the heavens.

¹⁰ Blessed are those who suffer persecution for righteousness’ sake, for theirs is the kingdom of the heavens.

¹⁹ Whosoever therefore shall undo one of these least commandments and shall teach men so, he shall be called the least in the kingdom of the heavens; but whosoever shall do and teach them, the same shall be called great in the kingdom of the heavens. ²⁰ For I say unto you, That except your righteousness shall exceed the righteousness of the scribes and Pharisees, ye shall in no case enter into the kingdom of the heavens.

¹⁰ Thy kingdom come. Thy will be done in earth, as it is in heaven.

³³ But seek ye first the kingdom of God and his righteousness, and all these things shall be added unto you.

⁷ And as ye go, preach, saying, The kingdom of the heavens has come.

¹¹ Verily I say unto you, Among those that are born of women there has not risen a greater than John the Baptist; notwithstanding, he that is least in the kingdom of the heavens is greater than he. ¹² From the days of John the Baptist until now, life is given unto the kingdom of the heavens, and the valiant take hold of it.

²⁰ Then he began to upbraid the cities wherein most of his mighty works were done because they repented not:

⁴¹ The men of Nineveh shall rise in the judgment with this generation and shall condemn it because they repented at the preaching of Jonah; and, behold, a greater than Jonah is here.

¹¹ He answered and said unto them, Because it is given unto you to know the mysteries of the kingdom of the heavens, but to them it is not given.

²⁴ ¶ He put forth another parable unto them, saying, The kingdom of the heavens is likened unto a man who sows good seed in his field

³¹ He put forth another parable unto them, saying, The kingdom of the heavens is like unto a grain of mustard seed, which a man took and sowed in his field;

³³ He spoke another parable unto them: The kingdom of the heavens is like unto leaven, which a woman took and hid in three measures of meal until the whole was leavened.

⁴⁴ ¶ Again, the kingdom of the heavens is like unto treasure hid in the field, which when found, a man hides it and, for the joy thereof, goes and sells all that he has and buys that field. ⁴⁵ Again, the kingdom of the heavens is like unto a merchant man, seeking goodly pearls,

⁴⁷ Again, the kingdom of the heavens is like unto a net that was cast into the sea and gathered of every kind of fish,

⁵² And he said unto them, Therefore every scribe who is instructed in the kingdom of the heavens is like unto a man, a husband of a house, who brings forth out of his treasure things new and old.

¹ ¶ At the same time the disciples came unto Jesus, saying, Who is the greatest in the kingdom of the heavens? ² And Jesus called a little child unto him and set him in the midst of them ³ and said, Verily I say unto you, Except ye be converted and become as little children, ye shall not enter into the kingdom of the heavens. ⁴ Whosoever therefore shall humble himself as this little child, the same is greatest in the kingdom of the heavens.

²³ Therefore is the kingdom of the heavens likened unto a man who is king who would take account of his slaves.

¹ ¶ For the kingdom of the heavens is like unto a man, the husband of a house, who went out early in the morning to hire labourers into his vineyard.

²⁹ He answered and said, I will not, but afterward he repented and went. ³⁰ And he came to the second and said likewise. And he answered and said, I will go, Lord, and went not. ³¹ Which of the two did the will of his father? They say unto him, The first. Jesus said unto them, Verily I say unto you, That the publicans and the harlots go ahead of you into the kingdom of God. ³² For John came unto you in the way of righteousness, and ye believed him not, but the publicans and the harlots believed him, and ye, when ye had seen it, repented not afterward that ye might believe him.

² The kingdom of the heavens is like unto a certain man, a king, who made a marriage feast for his son

¹³ ¶ But woe unto you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! for ye shut up the kingdom of the heavens in front of men, for ye neither go in yourselves, neither suffer ye those that are entering to go in.

¹ ¶ Then shall the kingdom of the heavens be likened unto ten virgins who, taking their lamps, went forth to meet the bridegroom.

¹⁴ ¶ For it is like a man travelling into a far country, who called his own slaves and delivered unto them his goods.

⁴ John baptized in the wilderness and preached the baptism of repentance for remission of sins.

¹² And they went out and preached that men should repent.

²⁰ ¶ And he lifted up his eyes on his disciples and said, Blessed are the poor, for yours is the kingdom of God.

² And he sent them to preach the kingdom of God and to heal the sick.

⁹ and heal the sick that are therein and say unto them, The kingdom of God is come near unto you. ¹⁰ But into whatever city ye enter and they receive you not, go out into the streets of the same and say, ¹¹ Even the very dust of your city which cleaves on us we do wipe off against you; notwithstanding be ye sure of this that the kingdom of God is come near unto you.

²⁰ But if I with the finger of God cast out the demons, certainly the kingdom of God is come upon you.

³ I tell you, No; but, except ye repent, ye shall all likewise perish.

⁵ I tell you, No; but, except ye repent, ye shall all likewise perish.

⁷ I say unto you that likewise there shall be more joy in heaven over one sinner that repents than over ninety-nine just persons, who need no repentance.

¹⁰ Likewise, I say unto you, there is joy in the presence of the angels of God over one sinner that repents.

³⁰ And he said, No, father Abraham; but if one went unto them from the dead, they will repent.

³¹ So likewise ye, when ye see these things come to pass, know ye that the kingdom of God is near at hand.

⁴⁷ and that repentance and remission of sins should be preached in his name among all nations, beginning from Jerusalem.

³ Jesus answered and said unto him, Verily, verily, I say unto thee, Except a person be born again from above, he cannot see the kingdom of God. ⁴ Nicodemus said unto him, How can a man be born when he is old? Can he enter the second time into his mother’s womb and be born? ⁵ Jesus answered, Verily, verily, I say unto thee, Unless a man is born of water and of the Spirit, he cannot enter into the kingdom of God.

³⁸ Then Peter said unto them, Repent and be baptized each one of you into the name of Jesus Christ for the remission of sins, and ye shall receive the gift of the Holy Spirit.

¹⁹ Repent ye therefore and be converted that your sins may be blotted out, for the times of refreshing of the presence of the Lord are come;

¹⁸ When they heard these things, they were silent and glorified God, saying, Then God has also granted repentance unto life to the Gentiles.

³⁰ For the times of this ignorance God overlooked, but he now commands all men everywhere to repent

²¹ testifying both to the Jews and also to the Gentiles, repentance toward God and faith toward our Lord Jesus Christ.

²⁰ but I announced first unto those of Damascus and at Jerusalem and throughout all the coasts of Judaea and then to the Gentiles that they should repent and turn to God, doing works worthy of repentance.

¹⁰ For godly sorrow works repentance to salvation, of which there is no need to repented; but the sorrow of the world works death.

¹³ who has delivered us from the power of darkness, and has translated us into the kingdom of his dear Son,

²⁵ that with meekness they might teach those that resist, if God peradventure will grant unto them that they might repent and know the truth,

¹ ¶ Therefore, leaving now the word of the beginning of the establishment of the Christ, let us go on unto perfection, not laying again the foundation of repentance from works of death, and of faith in God,

⁹ ¶ The Lord is not late concerning his promise, as some count lateness, but is patient with us, not willing that any should perish, but that all should come to repentance.

⁵ Remember, therefore, from where thou art fallen and repent and do the first works, or else I will come unto thee quickly and will remove thy lampstand out of its place, except thou repent.

²¹ And I have given her time to repent of her fornication, and she repented not.

¹⁴ And shall say, Clear away, clear away, level the way, take away the stumblingblocks out of the way of my people. ¹⁵ For thus has said the high and lofty One that inhabits eternity, whose name is The Holy One; I dwell in the high place and in holiness and with him also that is of a contrite and humble spirit to cause the spirit of the humble to live and to cause the heart of the contrite ones to live.

¹ ¶ Behold, I send my messenger, and he shall prepare the way before me; and the Lord, whom ye seek, shall suddenly come to his temple, and the angel of the covenant, whom ye desire: behold, he comes, said the LORD of the hosts.

¹⁷ And he shall go before him in the spirit and power of Elijah to turn the hearts of the fathers to the children and the rebellious to the prudence of the just, to make ready a prepared people for the Lord.

²³ He said, I am the voice of one crying in the wilderness, Make straight the way of the Lord, as said the prophet Isaiah.

²² these of them ye may eat: the locust according to his species and the bald locust according to his species and the beetle according to his species and the grasshopper according to his species.

¹³ He made him ride on the high places of the earth that he might eat the fruits of the field; and he made him to suck honey out of the rock and oil out of the strong flint,

²⁵ And the army of all the land came to a wood, and there was honey upon the ground. ²⁶ And when the people were come into the wood, behold, the honey dropped, but no man put his hand to his mouth, for the people feared the oath. ²⁷ But Jonathan had not heard when his father charged the people with the oath, therefore, he put forth the end of the rod that was in his hand and dipped it in a honeycomb and put his hand to his mouth, and his eyes were enlightened.

⁸ And they answered him, He was a hairy man and girt with a girdle of leather about his loins. And he said, It is Elijah, the Tishbite.

⁴ And it shall come to pass in that time, that the prophets shall be ashamed every one of his vision when he has prophesied; neither shall they wear a rough garment to deceive:

⁵ Behold, I send you Elijah the prophet before the coming of the great and terrible day of the LORD:

⁸ But what did you go out to see? A man clothed in soft raiment? Behold, those that wear soft clothing are in kings’ houses.

¹⁸ For John came neither eating nor drinking, and they say, He has a devil.

⁶ John was clothed with camel’s hair and with a girdle of a skin about his loins; and he ate locusts and wild honey

³ ¶ And I will give my two witnesses, and they shall prophesy a thousand two hundred and sixty days, clothed in sackcloth.

²⁵ And there followed him great multitudes of people from Galilee, from Decapolis, from Jerusalem, from Judaea and from beyond Jordan.

⁷ ¶ And as they departed, Jesus began to say unto the multitudes concerning John, What did you go out into the wilderness to see? A reed shaken with the wind? ⁸ But what did you go out to see? A man clothed in soft raiment? Behold, those that wear soft clothing are in kings’ houses. ⁹ But what did you go out to see? A prophet? Yes, I say unto you, and more than a prophet. ¹⁰ For this is he of whom it is written, Behold, I send my messenger before thy face, who shall prepare thy way before thee.

⁵ And there went out unto him all the land of Judaea and those of Jerusalem and were all baptized of him in the river of Jordan, confessing their sins.

⁷ Then said he to the multitude that came forth to be baptized of him, O generation of vipers, who taught you to flee from the wrath to come?

¹⁶ The law and the prophets were until John; since that time the kingdom of God is preached, and whosoever will presses into it.

²³ And John also was baptizing in Aenon near to Salim because there was much water there, and they came and were baptized.

³⁵ He was a burning and a shining light, and ye were willing to rejoice for one hour in his light.

²¹ and Aaron shall lay both his hands upon the head of the live he goat and confess over it all the iniquities of the sons of Israel and all their rebellions and all their sins, putting them thus upon the head of the he goat and shall send him away into the wilderness by the hand of a man prepared for this;

⁴⁰ ¶ And they shall confess their iniquity and the iniquity of their fathers for their trespass which they trespassed against me and that also they have walked contrary unto me,

⁷ then they shall confess their sin which they have done, and he shall recompense his guilt with the principal thereof and add unto it the fifth part thereof and give it unto him against whom he is guilty.

¹⁹ Then Joshua said unto Achan, My son, give, I pray thee, glory now to the LORD God of Israel and give him praise; and tell me now what thou hast done; do not hide it from me.

²⁷ He looks upon men, and if any say, I have sinned and perverted that which was right, and it did not profit me; ²⁸ God will ransom his soul from going into the pit, and his life shall see the light.

⁵ I acknowledged my sin unto thee, and I have not hid my iniquity. I said, I will confess (against myself) my rebellions unto the LORD, and thou shalt forgive the iniquity of my sin. Selah.

¹³ ¶ He that covers his sins shall not prosper, but whosoever confesses and forsakes them shall attain mercy.

²⁵ ¶ And I will sprinkle clean water upon you, and ye shall be cleansed from all your filthiness, and from all your idols I will cleanse you.

⁴ ¶ and I prayed unto the LORD my God and made my confession and said, Now O Lord, thou great God who is worthy to be feared, who keeps the covenant and the mercy with those that love thee and keep thy commandments;

¹¹ I indeed baptize you in water unto repentance, but he that comes after me is mightier than I, whose shoes I am not worthy to bear; he shall baptize you in the Holy Spirit and fire,

¹³ ¶ Then Jesus came from Galilee to Jordan unto John to be baptized of him. ¹⁴ But John resisted him much, saying, I have need to be baptized of thee, and comest thou to me? ¹⁵ And Jesus answering said unto him, Suffer it to be so now, for thus it is expedient for us to fulfil all righteousness. Then he suffered him. ¹⁶ And Jesus, after he was baptized, went up straightway out of the water; and, behold, the heavens were opened unto him, and he saw the Spirit of God descending like a dove and lighting upon him;

⁸ I indeed have baptized you with water, but he shall baptize you with the Holy Spirit. ⁹ ¶ And it came to pass in those days that Jesus came from Nazareth a city of Galilee and was baptized of John in the Jordan.

¹⁶ John answered, saying unto them all, I indeed baptize you in water, but one mightier than I comes, the latchet of whose shoes I am not worthy to unloose; he shall baptize you in the Holy Spirit and fire;

¹⁸ I will arise and go to my father and will say unto him, Father, I have sinned against heaven and before thee ¹⁹ and am no longer worthy to be called thy son; make me as one of thy hired servants. ²⁰ And he arose and came to his father. But when he was yet a great way off, his father saw him and was moved with compassion and ran and fell on his neck and kissed him. ²¹ And the son said unto him, Father, I have sinned against heaven and in thy sight and am no longer worthy to be called thy son.

²⁵ And they asked him and said unto him, Why dost thou baptize then if thou art not the Christ, nor Elijah, nor the prophet? ²⁶ John answered them, saying, I baptize with water, but there stands one among you, whom ye know not; ²⁷ he it is, who coming after me is preferred before me, whose shoe’s latchet I am not worthy to unloose. ²⁸ These things were done in Bethabara beyond Jordan, where John was baptizing.

³¹ And I knew him not; but that he should be made manifest to Israel, therefore am I come baptizing with water. ³² And John gave testimony, saying, I saw the Spirit descending from heaven like a dove, and it abode upon him. ³³ And I knew him not; but he that sent me to baptize with water, the same said unto me, Upon whom thou shalt see the Spirit descending and abiding on him, the same is he who baptizes with the Holy Spirit.

²³ And John also was baptizing in Aenon near to Salim because there was much water there, and they came and were baptized. ²⁴ For John was not yet cast into prison. ²⁵ Then there arose a question between the disciples of John and the Jews about purifying.

⁵ For John truly baptized in water, but ye shall be baptized in the Holy Spirit not many days from now.

³⁸ Then Peter said unto them, Repent and be baptized each one of you into the name of Jesus Christ for the remission of sins, and ye shall receive the gift of the Holy Spirit. ³⁹ For the promise is unto you and to your children and to all that are afar off, even as many as the Lord our God shall call. ⁴⁰ And with many other words he testified and exhorted, saying, Be saved from this perverse generation. ⁴¹ So that those who gladly received his word were baptized, and the same day there were added unto them about three thousand souls.

³⁶ The word which God sent unto the sons of Israel, preaching the gospel: peace by Jesus Christ (he is Lord of all), ³⁷ that word, I say, ye know, which was published throughout all Judaea and began from Galilee, after the baptism which John preached, ³⁸ how God anointed Jesus of Nazareth with the Holy Spirit and with power, who went about doing good and healing all that were oppressed of the devil, for God was with him.

¹⁶ Then I remembered the word of the Lord, when he said, John indeed baptized in water, but ye shall be baptized in the Holy Spirit.

⁴ Then said Paul, John verily baptized with the baptism of repentance, saying unto the people that they should believe on him who should come after him, that is, on Christ, Jesus. ⁵ When they heard this, they were baptized into the name of the Lord Jesus.

¹⁸ And many that believed came, confessing and declaring their deeds.

¹⁶ And now why tarriest thou? Arise and be baptized and wash away thy sins, calling on the name of the Lord.

² and were all baptized into Moses in the cloud and in the sea

¹² buried together with him in baptism, wherein also ye are risen with him through the faith of the operation of God, who has raised him from the dead.

⁵ not by works of righteousness which we have done, but according to his mercy he saved us, by the washing of regeneration and renewing of the Holy Spirit, ⁶ which he poured out abundantly in us through Jesus, the Christ, our Saviour;

² of the doctrine of the baptisms, and of the laying on of hands, and of the resurrection of the dead, and of eternal judgment.

¹⁰ but in foods and drinks and different washings and carnal ordinances, imposed on them until the time of correction.

¹⁶ Confess your faults one to another and pray one for another that ye may be whole. The effectual prayer of the righteous is very powerful.

²¹ ¶ Unto the figure of which the baptism that does now correspond saves us (not taking away the uncleanness of the flesh, but giving testimony of a good conscience before God) by the resurrection of Jesus, the Christ,

⁹ If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness.

¹⁵ and I will put enmity between thee and the woman and between thy seed and her seed; that seed shall bruise thy head, and thou shalt bruise his heel.

³ The wicked are estranged from the womb; they go astray as soon as they are born, speaking lies. ⁴ Their poison is like the poison of a serpent; they are like the deaf adder that stops her ear, ⁵ which will not hearken to the voice of charmers, charming never so wisely. ⁶ ¶ Break their teeth, O God, in their mouth; break out the great teeth of the young lions, O LORD.

³ ¶ But come here, ye sons of the sorceress, generation of the adulterer and the whore. ⁴ Against whom do ye sport yourselves? Against whom do ye make a wide mouth, and draw out the tongue? Are ye not rebellious sons, a lying seed of transgression,

⁵ They hatch cockatrice’ eggs and weave the spider’s web; whosoever shall eat of their eggs shall die, and if they should squeeze them, a viper shall come out.

¹⁰ To whom shall I speak, and give warning that they may hear? behold, their ears are uncircumcised, and they cannot hearken, behold, the word of the LORD is unto them a reproach; they have no delight in it.

⁶ Flee out of the midst of Babylon and deliver each one his soul that ye not perish because of her iniquity, for this is the time of the LORD’s vengeance; he will render unto her a recompense.

¹⁸ When I say unto the wicked, Thou shalt surely die and thou dost not give him warning, nor speak to warn the wicked from his wicked way, that he might live, the same wicked man shall die for his iniquity; but his blood I will require at thine hand. ¹⁹ Yet if thou warn the wicked and he does not turn from his wickedness nor from his wicked way, he shall die for his iniquity; but thou hast delivered thy soul. ²⁰ Again, When the righteous man turns from his righteousness and commits iniquity and I lay a stumblingblock before him, he shall die because thou hast not given him warning; he shall die in his sin, and his righteousness which he has done shall not be remembered; but his blood I will require at thy hand. ²¹ Nevertheless if thou warn the righteous man that the righteous not sin and he does not sin, he shall surely live because he is warned; also thou hast delivered thy soul.

³ and he should see the sword coming upon the land, if he should blow the shofar, and warn the people, ⁴ then whoever hears the sound of the shofar and does not take warning; and the coming of the sword should take him away, his blood shall be upon his own head. ⁵ He heard the sound of the shofar and did not take warning; his blood shall be upon himself. But he that takes warning shall deliver his soul. ⁶ But if the watchman should see the sword coming and not blow the shofar and the people not be warned, if the sword comes and takes any person from among them, he is taken away because of his iniquity; but his blood I will require at the watchman’s hand. ⁷ So thou, O son of man, I have set thee a watchman unto the house of Israel; therefore thou shalt hear the word at my mouth and warn them from me.

²⁰ For I say unto you, That except your righteousness shall exceed the righteousness of the scribes and Pharisees, ye shall in no case enter into the kingdom of the heavens.

²⁴ But when the Pharisees heard it, they said, This fellow does not cast out demons but by Beelzebub the prince of the demons.

³⁴ O generation of vipers, how can ye, being evil, speak good things? For out of the abundance of the heart the mouth speaks.

¹² Then his disciples came and said unto him, Knowest thou that the Pharisees were offended when they heard this word?

⁶ Then Jesus said unto them, Take heed and keep yourselves from the leaven of the Pharisees and of the Sadducees.

¹¹ How is it that ye do not understand that I did not speak to you concerning bread that ye should keep yourselves from the leaven of the Pharisees and of the Sadducees? ¹² Then they understood that he bade them not to keep themselves from the leaven of bread, but from the doctrine of the Pharisees and of the Sadducees.

¹⁵ ¶ Then the Pharisees left and took counsel how they might entangle him in his word.

²³ ¶ The same day the Sadducees came to him, who say that there is no resurrection, and asked him,

³⁴ ¶ Then the Pharisees, hearing that he had put the Sadducees to silence, gathered together.

¹³ ¶ But woe unto you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! for ye shut up the kingdom of the heavens in front of men, for ye neither go in yourselves, neither suffer ye those that are entering to go in. ¹⁴ Woe unto you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! for ye devour widows’ houses and for a pretence make long prayer; therefore, ye shall receive the greater judgment. ¹⁵ Woe unto you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! for ye compass sea and land to make one proselyte, and when he is made, ye make him twofold more a son of hell than yourselves. ¹⁶ Woe unto you, ye blind guides, who say, Whosoever shall swear by the temple, it is nothing; but whosoever shall swear by the gold of the temple, he is a debtor! ¹⁷ Ye fools and blind, for which is greater, the gold or the temple that sanctifies the gold? ¹⁸ And, Whosoever shall swear by the altar, it is nothing; but whosoever swears by the gift that is upon it, he is a debtor. ¹⁹ Ye fools and blind, for which one is greater, the gift or the altar that sanctifies the gift? ²⁰ Whosoever therefore shall swear by the altar, swears by it and by all things thereon. ²¹ And whosoever shall swear by the temple, swears by it and by Him that dwells therein. ²² And he that shall swear by the heaven, swears by the throne of God and by Him that sits thereon. ²³ Woe unto you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! for ye pay tithe of mint and anise and cummin and have omitted that which is more important of the law: judgment, mercy, and faith; these were expedient for ye to have done, and not to leave the other undone. ²⁴ Ye blind guides, who strain at a gnat and swallow a camel. ²⁵ Woe unto you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! for ye make clean the outside of the cup or of the platter, but within they are full of extortion and incontinence. ²⁶ Thou blind Pharisee, cleanse first that which is within the cup and platter that the outside of them may be clean also. ²⁷ Woe unto you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! for ye are like unto whitewashed sepulchres, who indeed appear beautiful outside, but inside are full of dead men’s bones and of all uncleanness. ²⁸ Even so ye also outwardly appear righteous unto men, but within ye are full of hypocrisy and iniquity.

³³ Ye serpents, ye generation of vipers, how can ye escape the judgment of hell?

³ (For the Pharisees and all the Jews, unless they wash their hands often, eat not, holding the tradition of the elders. ⁴ And when they come from the market, unless they wash, they eat not. And there are many other things which they took upon themselves to hold such as the washing of cups and pots, brasen vessels and of tables.) ⁵ Then the Pharisees and scribes asked him, Why do thy disciples not walk according to the tradition of the elders but eat bread with unwashed hands?

¹⁵ And he commanded them, saying, Take heed, beware of the leaven of the Pharisees and of the leaven of Herod.

¹³ ¶ And they send unto him certain of the Pharisees and of the Herodians to catch him in his words.

¹⁸ ¶ Then come unto him the Sadducees, who say there is no resurrection; and they asked him, saying,

⁷ Then said he to the multitude that came forth to be baptized of him, O generation of vipers, who taught you to flee from the wrath to come? ⁸ Bring forth therefore fruits worthy of repentance and begin not to say within yourselves, We have Abraham for our father; for I say unto you, That God is able of these stones to raise up children unto Abraham. ⁹ And now also the axe is laid unto the root of the trees; every tree therefore which does not bring forth good fruit is hewn down and cast into the fire.

³⁰ But the Pharisees and lawyers rejected the counsel of God against themselves, being not baptized of him.

³⁹ And the Lord said unto him, Now do ye Pharisees make clean the outside of the cup and the platter; but your inward part is full of ravening and wickedness. ⁴⁰ Ye fools, did not he that made that which is without make that which is within also? ⁴¹ But rather give alms {lit. do acts of mercy} of such things as ye have; and, behold, all things are clean unto you. ⁴² But woe unto you, Pharisees! for ye tithe mint and rue and all manner of herbs and pass over the judgment and the charity of God; these ought ye to have done, and not to leave the other undone. ⁴³ Woe unto you, Pharisees! for ye love the first seats in the synagogues and greetings in the markets. ⁴⁴ Woe unto you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! for ye are as graves which are not seen, and the men that walk over them are not aware of them.

¹⁴ And the Pharisees also, who were covetous, heard all these things, and they derided him.

¹¹ The Pharisee stood and prayed thus with himself, God, I thank thee that I am not as other men are: extortioners, unjust, adulterers, or even as this publican.

²⁴ And those who were sent were of the Pharisees.

⁴⁵ ¶ Then the officers to the chief priests and Pharisees came, and they said unto them, Why have ye not brought him? ⁴⁶ The officers answered, Never has anyone spoken like this man. ⁴⁷ Then the Pharisees answered them, Are ye also deceived? ⁴⁸ Have any of the princes or of the Pharisees believed on him? ⁴⁹ But this people who do not know the law are cursed.

⁴⁴ Ye are of your father the devil, and the desires of your father ye desire to do. He was a murderer from the beginning and abode not in the truth because there is no truth in him. When he speaks a lie, he speaks of his own, for he is a liar and the father of it.

⁴⁰ And some of the Pharisees who were with him heard these words and said unto him, Are we blind also?

¹ ¶ And as they spoke unto the people, the priests and the captain of the temple and the Sadducees came upon them, ² resentful that they taught the people and preached through Jesus the resurrection from the dead.

¹⁷ ¶ Then the prince of the priests rose up, and all those that were with him (which is the sect of the Sadducees) were filled with jealousy

⁵ But there rose up certain of the sect of the Pharisees who had believed, saying, That it was needful to circumcise them and to command them to keep the law of Moses.

³¹ Therefore watch and remember that by the space of three years I ceased not to warn every one night and day with tears.

⁶ ¶ But when Paul perceived that the one part were Sadducees and the other Pharisees, he cried out in the council, Men and brethren, I am a Pharisee, the son of a Pharisee, and of the hope and resurrection of the dead I am called in question. ⁷ And when he had so said, there arose a dissension between the Pharisees and the Sadducees, and the multitude was divided. ⁸ For the Sadducees say that there is no resurrection, neither angel, nor spirit; but the Pharisees confess both. ⁹ And there arose a great cry; and the scribes that were of the Pharisees’ part arose and strove, saying, We find no evil in this man, but if a spirit or an angel has spoken to him, let us not fight against God.

⁵ who knew me from the beginning, if they would testify, that after the most perfect sect of our religion I lived a Pharisee.

¹⁸ For the wrath of God is revealed from heaven against all ungodliness and injustice of men, who hold back the truth with injustice;

⁹ Then much more now justified in his blood, we shall be saved from wrath by him.

¹⁰ and to wait for his Son from the heavens, whom he raised from the dead, even Jesus, who delivered us from the wrath to come.

⁹ who shall be punished with eternal destruction by the presence of the Lord and by the glory of his power, ¹⁰ when he shall come to be glorified in his saints and to be admired in all those that believe (because our testimony among you was believed) in that day.

¹⁸ that by two immutable things, in which it is impossible for God to lie, we might have a strong consolation, who have fled for refuge to lay hold upon the hope set before us,

⁷ By faith Noah, having received revelation of things not seen as yet, with great care prepared an ark to the saving of his house, by which he condemned the world and was made heir of the righteousness which is by faith.

¹⁰ In this the sons of God are manifest, and the sons of the devil: whosoever does not righteousness and that loves not his brother is not of God.

¹⁶ and said to the mountains and to the rocks, Fall on us and hide us from the face of him that is seated upon the throne and from the wrath of the Lamb; ¹⁷ for the great day of his wrath is come, and who shall be able to stand before him?

⁹ And the great dragon was cast out, the serpent of old, who is called Devil and the Satan, who deceives the whole world; he was cast out into the earth, and his angels were cast out with him. ¹⁰ And I heard a loud voice saying in heaven, Now is come salvation and virtue and the kingdom of our God and the power of his Christ; for the accuser of our brethren is cast down, who accused them before our God day and night.

¹⁶ ¶ Wash yourselves, make yourselves clean; put away the evil of your doings from before my eyes; cease to do evil; ¹⁷ learn to do good; seek judgment; restore unto the oppressed; hear the fatherless in right judgment; protect the widow.

³ Thus hath the LORD of the hosts the God of Israel said, Amend your ways and your doings, and I will cause you to dwell in this place. ⁴ Do not trust in lying words, saying, The temple of the LORD, The temple of the LORD, The temple of the LORD are these. ⁵ For if ye thoroughly amend your ways and your doings, if ye thoroughly do right between a man and his neighbour, ⁶ if ye do not oppress the stranger, the fatherless, and the widow, and shed no innocent blood in this place, neither walk after other gods to your hurt, ⁷ then I will cause you to dwell in this place, in the land that I gave to your fathers for ever and ever.

¹³ Therefore now amend your ways and your doings and hear the voice of the LORD your God; and the LORD himself will repent of the evil that he has pronounced against you.

³ If peradventure the house of Judah will hear all the evil which I purpose to do unto them; that they may turn each one from his evil way; and I will forgive their iniquity and their sin.

²⁸ ¶ But what do you think? A certain man had two sons, and he came to the first and said, Son, go work today in my vineyard. ²⁹ He answered and said, I will not, but afterward he repented and went. ³⁰ And he came to the second and said likewise. And he answered and said, I will go, Lord, and went not.

⁸ Bring forth therefore fruits worthy of repentance and begin not to say within yourselves, We have Abraham for our father; for I say unto you, That God is able of these stones to raise up children unto Abraham.

¹⁰ And the people asked him, saying, What shall we do then? ¹¹ He answered and said unto them, He that has two coats, let him impart to him that has none; and he that has food, let him do likewise. ¹² Then the publicans also came to be baptized and said unto him, Master, what shall we do? ¹³ And he said unto them, Exact no more than that which is appointed you. ¹⁴ And the soldiers likewise demanded of him, saying, And what shall we do? And he said unto them, Oppress no one, neither accuse anyone falsely; and be content with your wages.

⁴ Or dost thou despise the riches of his goodness and forbearance and longsuffering, ignoring that the goodness of God leads thee to repentance? ⁵ But after thy hardness and impenitent heart treasures up unto thyself wrath against the day of wrath and revelation of the righteous judgment of God, ⁶ who will render to everyone according to his deeds: ⁷ to those who persevered in well doing, glory and honour and incorruption, to those who seek eternal life;

¹⁰ For godly sorrow works repentance to salvation, of which there is no need to repented; but the sorrow of the world works death. ¹¹ For behold this same thing, that when ye were made sorry by God, what carefulness it wrought in you, what clearing of yourselves, what indignation, what fear, what vehement desire, what zeal, what vindication! In all things ye have shown yourselves to be clean in this matter.

²² But the fruit of the Spirit is this: Charity, joy, peace, tolerance, gentleness, goodness, faith, ²³ meekness, temperance: against such there is no law.

⁹ (For the fruit of the Spirit is in all goodness and righteousness and truth),

¹¹ being filled with fruits of righteousness, which are by Jesus Christ, unto the glory and praise of God.

⁴ whereby are given unto us exceeding great and precious promises, that by these ye might be made participants of the divine nature, having fled the corruption that is in the world through lust. ⁵ ¶ Ye also, giving all diligence to the same, show forth virtue in your faith; and in virtue, knowledge; ⁶ and in knowledge, temperance; and in temperance, patience; and in patience, fear of God; ⁷ and in fear of God, brotherly love; and in brotherly love, charity. ⁸ For if these things are in you and abound, they shall not let you be idle nor unfruitful in the knowledge of our Lord Jesus Christ.

²⁴ Son of man, those that inhabit these wastes in the land of Israel speak, saying, Abraham was one, and he possessed the land; but we are many; the land is given us for a possession.

¹¹ But I say unto you, That many shall come from the east and west and shall sit down at the table with Abraham and Isaac and Jacob in the kingdom of the heavens. ¹² But the sons of the kingdom shall be cast out into outer darkness; there shall be weeping and gnashing of teeth.

²¹ For from within, out of the heart of men, come forth the evil thoughts, the adulteries, the fornications, the murders,

²² Then Jesus, knowing their thoughts and answering them said, What reason ye in your hearts?

³⁹ Now when the Pharisee who had invited him saw it, he spoke within himself, saying, This man, if he were a prophet, would have known who and what manner of woman this is that touches him, for she is a sinner.

¹⁷ and he thought within himself, saying, What shall I do because I have no room where to bestow my fruits?

²⁴ And he cried and said, Father Abraham, have mercy on me and send Lazarus that he may dip the tip of his finger in water and cool my tongue; for I am tormented in this flame.

⁴⁰ And he answered and said unto them, I tell you that if these should be silent, the stones would immediately cry out.

³³ They answered him, We are Abraham’s seed, and we have never served anyone; how sayest thou, Ye shall be set free?

³⁹ They answered and said unto him, Abraham is our father. Jesus said unto them, If ye were Abraham’s sons, ye would do the works of Abraham. ⁴⁰ But now ye seek to kill me, a man that has told you the truth, which I have heard of God; Abraham did not do this.

⁵³ Art thou greater than our father Abraham who died? and the prophets died; whom makest thou thyself?

²⁶ Men and brethren, sons of the lineage of Abraham, and whosoever among you fears God, unto you is this word of saving health sent.

¹⁴ Simeon has declared how God first visited the Gentiles, to take out of them a people for his name.

¹ ¶ What shall we say then that Abraham our father, as pertaining to the flesh, has found?

¹¹ And he received the circumcision as a sign, as a seal of the righteousness of the faith which he had, yet being uncircumcised, that he might be the father of all the uncircumcised believers, that it might be counted unto them also as righteousness, ¹² that he be the father of the circumcision: not only to those who are of the circumcision, but also unto those who walk in the steps of the faith that was in our father Abraham before he was circumcised. ¹³ For the promise that he should be the heir of the world was not to Abraham or to his seed through the law, but through the righteousness of faith. ¹⁴ For if those who are of the law are the heirs, faith is in vain, and the promise annulled, ¹⁵ because the law works wrath; for where there is no law, there is no rebellion either. ¹⁶ Therefore by faith, that it might be by grace, to the end the promise might be sure to all the seed, not only to that which is of the law, but also to that which is of the faith of Abraham, who is the father of us all, ¹⁷ ¶ as it is written, As a father of many Gentiles have I placed thee before God, whom he believed, who gives life to the dead and calls those things which are not as those that are.

⁷ neither, because they are the seed of Abraham, are all sons, but, In Isaac shall thy seed be called. ⁸ That is, Those who are sons of the flesh, these are not the sons of God; but those who are sons of the promise are counted in the generation.

²⁷ but rather God has chosen that which is the foolishness of the world to confound the wise, and God has chosen that which is the weakness of the world to put to shame the things which are mighty; ²⁸ and that which is vile of the world and that which is despised God has chosen, and things which are not, to bring to nought the things that are,

²⁷ For as many of you as have been baptized into Christ have put on Christ. ²⁸ Here there is neither Jew nor Greek, there is neither slave nor free, there is neither male nor female; for ye are all one in Christ Jesus. ²⁹ And if ye are Christ’s, then ye are Abraham’s seed and heirs according to the promise.

²² For it is written that Abraham had two sons, the one by a bondmaid, the other by a freewoman. ²³ But he who was of the bondwoman was born according to the flesh, but he of the freewoman was born through the promise. ²⁴ Which things are an allegory; for these women are the two covenants: the one from the Mount Sinai, which begat unto slavery, which is Hagar. ²⁵ For this Hagar or Sinai is a mount in Arabia, which corresponds to the one that is now Jerusalem, which together with her children is in slavery. ²⁶ But the Jerusalem of above is free, which is the mother of us all. ²⁷ For it is written, Rejoice, thou barren that bearest not; break forth into praise and cry, thou that travailest not: for the desolate has many more children than she who has a husband. ²⁸ So that we, brethren, as Isaac was, are the children of promise. ²⁹ But as then he that was born according to the flesh persecuted him that was born according to the Spirit, even so it is now. ³⁰ Nevertheless what does the scripture say? Cast out the bondwoman and her son, for the son of the bondwoman shall not be heir with the son of the freewoman. ³¹ So then, brethren, we are not children of the bondwoman, but of the free.

¹² that at that time ye were without Christ, being aliens from the commonwealth of Israel and strangers from the covenants of promise, having no hope, and without God in the world, ¹³ but now in Christ Jesus ye who at another time were far off are made near by the blood of the Christ.

³ And he shall be like a tree planted by the rivers of water, that brings forth its fruit in its season; his leaf also shall not wither; and whatever he does shall prosper.

¹⁵ and the vineyard which thy right hand has planted and the branch that thou didst make strong for thyself. ¹⁶ It is burned with fire; it is cut down; they perish at the rebuke of thy countenance.

¹³ Those that are planted in the house of the LORD shall flourish in the courts of our God. ¹⁴ They shall still bring forth fruit in old age; they shall be vigorous and flourishing

² and he had fenced it and gathered out the stones thereof and planted it with the choicest vine and built a tower in the midst of it and also made a winepress therein; and he looked that it should bring forth grapes, and it brought forth wild grapes. ³ And now, O inhabitants of Jerusalem, and men of Judah, judge, I pray you, between me and my vineyard. ⁴ What could have been done more to my vineyard, that I have not done in it? Therefore, when I looked that it should bring forth grapes, did it bring forth wild grapes? ⁵ And now go to; I will tell you what I will do to my vineyard: I will take away its hedge, and it shall be eaten up; and break down its wall, and it shall be trodden down: ⁶ And I will lay it waste; it shall not be pruned, nor hoed; but briers and thorns shall come up there; I will even command the clouds that they rain no rain upon it. ⁷ For the vineyard of the LORD of the hosts is the house of Israel and every man of Judah his pleasant plant; and he looked for judgment, but behold oppression; for righteousness, but behold a cry.

¹¹ When its boughs are withered, they shall be broken off: women shall come and set them on fire: for this is not a people of understanding: therefore he that made them will not have mercy on them, and he that formed them will show them no favour.

³ to order in Zion those that mourn, to give unto them beauty for ashes, the oil of joy for mourning, the garment of praise for the spirit of heaviness; that they might be called trees of righteousness, the planting of the LORD, that he might be glorified.

⁸ For he shall be as a tree planted by the waters, that spreads out her roots by the river and shall not see when heat comes, but her leaf shall be green and shall not be fatigued in the year of drought, neither shall cease from yielding fruit.

² Son of man, What is the vine tree more than any tree? What is the branch among the trees of the forest? ³ Shall wood be taken from it to do a work? Will men take a peg from it to hang any vessel thereon? ⁴ Behold, it is cast into the fire for fuel; the fire devours both the ends of it, and the midst of it is burned. Is it meet for any work? ⁵ Behold, when it was whole, it was meet for no work; how much less afterward shall it be meet for any work when the fire has devoured it, and it is burned? ⁶ Therefore thus hath the Lord GOD said: As the vine tree among the trees of the forest which I have given to the fire for fuel, so I have given over the inhabitants of Jerusalem. ⁷ And I will set my face against them; they came out of one fire, and another fire shall devour them; and ye shall know that I am the LORD when I set my face against them.

¹ ¶ Behold, I send my messenger, and he shall prepare the way before me; and the Lord, whom ye seek, shall suddenly come to his temple, and the angel of the covenant, whom ye desire: behold, he comes, said the LORD of the hosts. ² But who may abide the time of his coming? and who shall stand when he appears? for he shall be like a refiner’s fire and like fullers’ soap: ³ And he shall sit to refine and to purify the silver: for he shall purify the sons of Levi and purge them as gold and silver that they may offer unto the LORD an offering in righteousness.

¹ ¶ For, behold, the day comes that shall burn as an oven; and all the proud, and all that do wickedly shall be stubble; and the day that comes shall burn them up, said the LORD of the hosts, that it shall leave them neither root nor branch.

¹⁹ Every tree that does not bring forth good fruit is hewn down and cast into the fire.

¹⁹ And when he saw a fig tree in the way, he came to it and found nothing upon it, but leaves only, and said unto it, Let no fruit grow on thee from now on for ever. And then the fig tree withered away.

⁹ And now also the axe is laid unto the root of the trees; every tree therefore which does not bring forth good fruit is hewn down and cast into the fire.

⁶ ¶ And He spoke this parable: A certain man had a fig tree planted in his vineyard, and he came and sought fruit upon it and found none. ⁷ Then he said unto the dresser of his vineyard, Behold, these three years I come seeking fruit on this fig tree and find none; cut it down; why does it cumber the ground? ⁸ And he, answering, said unto him, Lord, let it alone this year also until I shall dig about it and dung it, ⁹ and if it bears fruit, well; and if not, then after that thou shalt cut it down.

³¹ For if they do these things in the green tree, what shall be done in the dry?

² Every branch in me that does not bear fruit he shall take away; and every one that bears fruit, he shall purge that they may bring forth more fruit.

⁶ He who does not abide in me shall be cast forth as an unsound branch and shall wither, and they are gathered and cast into the fire and are burned.

¹ ¶ Therefore, brethren, saints, partakers of the heavenly calling, consider the Apostle and High Priest of our profession, Christ Jesus, ² who was faithful to him that appointed him over all his house, as also Moses was faithful. ³ For this man was counted worthy of more glory than Moses, inasmuch as he who has built the house has more honour than the house.

⁸ but that which bears thorns and briers is rejected and is near unto cursing, whose end shall be by fire.

²⁸ He that despised the law of Moses died without mercy under two or three witnesses: ²⁹ Of how much greater punishment, suppose ye, shall he be thought worthy, who has trodden underfoot the Son of God and has counted the blood of the covenant, with which he was sanctified, an unholy thing and has done despite unto the Spirit of grace? ³⁰ For we know who he is that has said, Vengeance belongs to me, I will recompense, saith the Lord. And again, The Lord shall judge his people. ³¹ It is a fearful thing to fall into the hands of the living God.

²⁵ See that you do not refuse him that speaks. For if those who refused him that spoke on earth did not escape, much less shall we escape, if we turn away from him that speaks from the heavens,

¹⁷ For it is time that the judgment begins from the house of God; and if it first begins with us, what shall the end be of those that do not obey the gospel of God? ¹⁸ And if the righteous are saved with difficulty, where shall the unfaithful and the sinner appear?

⁴ When the Lord shall have washed away the filth of the daughters of Zion and shall have purged the blood of Jerusalem from the midst thereof by the spirit of judgment and by the spirit of burning.

³ For I will pour water upon him that is thirsty and floods upon the dry ground; I will pour my spirit upon thy seed and my blessing upon thine offspring:

²⁰ And the Redeemer shall come to Zion and unto those that turn from the rebellion in Jacob, said the LORD. ²¹ And this shall be my covenant with them, said the LORD; My spirit that is upon thee, and my words, which I have put in thy mouth, shall not depart out of thy mouth, nor out of the mouth of thy seed, nor out of the mouth of thy seed’s seed, saith the LORD, from now on and for ever.

⁹ And I will put the third part into the fire and will refine them as silver is refined and will try them as gold is tried; He shall call on my name, and I will hear him; I will say, My people, and he shall say, The LORD is my God.

² But who may abide the time of his coming? and who shall stand when he appears? for he shall be like a refiner’s fire and like fullers’ soap: ³ And he shall sit to refine and to purify the silver: for he shall purify the sons of Levi and purge them as gold and silver that they may offer unto the LORD an offering in righteousness. ⁴ Then the offering of Judah and Jerusalem shall be pleasant unto the LORD as in the days of old and as in former years.

⁶ and were baptized of him in the Jordan, confessing their sins.

³ And he came into all the country about Jordan, preaching the baptism of repentance for the remission of sins;

⁶ Then Jesus went with them. And when he was now not far from the house, the centurion sent friends to him, saying unto him, Lord, trouble not thyself, for I am not worthy that thou should enter under my roof; ⁷ therefore neither did I think myself worthy to come unto thee but say the word, and my slave shall be healed.

¹⁵ ¶ John bore witness of him and cried, saying, This is he of whom I spoke, He that comes after me is preferred before me, for he was before me.

²⁶ John answered them, saying, I baptize with water, but there stands one among you, whom ye know not; ²⁷ he it is, who coming after me is preferred before me, whose shoe’s latchet I am not worthy to unloose.

³⁰ This is he of whom I said, After me comes a man who is preferred before me, for he was before me.

³³ And I knew him not; but he that sent me to baptize with water, the same said unto me, Upon whom thou shalt see the Spirit descending and abiding on him, the same is he who baptizes with the Holy Spirit. ³⁴ And I have seen and have given testimony that this is the Son of God.

²³ And John also was baptizing in Aenon near to Salim because there was much water there, and they came and were baptized. ²⁴ For John was not yet cast into prison. ²⁵ Then there arose a question between the disciples of John and the Jews about purifying. ²⁶ And they came unto John and said unto him, Rabbi, he that was with thee beyond Jordan of whom thou gave witness, behold, the same baptizes, and all men come to him.

² And suddenly there came a sound from heaven as of a rushing mighty wind, and it filled all the house where they were sitting. ³ And there appeared unto them cloven tongues like as of fire, and it sat upon each of them. ⁴ And they were all filled with the Holy Spirit and began to speak in other tongues, as the Spirit gave them utterance.

¹⁵ And as I began to speak, the Holy Spirit fell on them, as on us at the beginning. ¹⁶ Then I remembered the word of the Lord, when he said, John indeed baptized in water, but ye shall be baptized in the Holy Spirit.

⁴ Then said Paul, John verily baptized with the baptism of repentance, saying unto the people that they should believe on him who should come after him, that is, on Christ, Jesus.

¹³ For by one Spirit we are all baptized into one body, whether we are Jews or Greeks, whether we are slaves or free, and have been all made to drink into one Spirit.

²⁷ For as many of you as have been baptized into Christ have put on Christ. ²⁸ Here there is neither Jew nor Greek, there is neither slave nor free, there is neither male nor female; for ye are all one in Christ Jesus.

⁸ Unto me, who am less than the least of all saints, is this grace given that I should preach among the Gentiles the unsearchable riches of the Christ

⁵ not by works of righteousness which we have done, but according to his mercy he saved us, by the washing of regeneration and renewing of the Holy Spirit,

⁵ ¶ Likewise, young people, be subject to the elders in such a manner that you are all subject to one another. Be clothed with humility of will, for God resists the proud and gives grace to the humble.

¹⁸ They shall be as stubble before the wind and as chaff taken up by the whirlwind.

⁴ ¶ The ungodly are not so but are like the chaff which the wind drives away.

⁵ Let them be as chaff before the wind, and let the angel of the LORD chase them.

³¹ And the strong idol shall be as tow and the maker of it as a spark, and they shall both burn together, and no one shall be able to quench them.

²⁴ Therefore as the fire devours the stubble and the flame consumes the chaff, so their root shall be as rottenness, and their blossom shall go away as dust because they have cast away the law of the LORD of the hosts and despised the word of the Holy One of Israel.

¹³ The peoples shall make noise like the rushing of great waters, but God shall reprehend them, and they shall flee far off and shall be chased as the chaff of the mountains before the wind and like the tumbleweed before the whirlwind.

²⁴ Thine oxen and thine asses that work the ground shall eat clean grain, which has been winnowed with the shovel and with the fan.

¹⁶ Thou shalt fan them, and the wind shall carry them away, and the whirlwind shall scatter them; but thou shalt rejoice in the LORD, thou shalt glory in the Holy One of Israel.

²⁴ And they shall go forth and look upon the carcasses of the men that rebelled against me; for their worm shall not die, neither shall their fire be quenched; and they shall be an abhorring unto all flesh.

¹¹ At that time it shall be said to this people and to Jerusalem, A dry wind of the high places of the wilderness came toward the daughter of my people, not to fan, nor to cleanse.

²⁰ Therefore thus hath the Lord GOD said: Behold, my anger and my fury shall be poured out upon this place, upon man and upon beast and upon the trees of the field and upon the fruit of the ground, and it shall burn and shall not be quenched.

⁷ And I fanned them with a fan unto the gates of the land; I bereaved them of children, I wasted my people; they did not turn from their ways.

²⁷ But if ye will not hearken unto me to sanctify the sabbath day, and not to bring burdens nor bring it in through the gates of Jerusalem on the sabbath day; then I will kindle a fire in the gates thereof, and it shall devour the palaces of Jerusalem, and it shall not be quenched.

² And I will send unto Babylon fanners that shall fan her and shall empty her land; for in the day of trouble they shall be against her round about.

⁴⁷ and thou shalt say to the forest of the south, Hear the word of the LORD. Thus hath the Lord GOD said: Behold, I kindle a fire in thee, which shall devour every green tree in thee and every dry tree; the flame of the fire shall not be quenched, and all faces from the south to the north shall be burned therein. ⁴⁸ And all flesh shall see that I the LORD have kindled it; it shall not be quenched.

³ Therefore they shall be as the morning mist and as the early dew that passes away, as the chaff that is driven with the whirlwind out of the threshing floor and as the smoke out of the chimney.

⁹ For, behold, I will command, and I will cause the house of Israel to be sifted among all the Gentiles like as the grain is sifted in a sieve, yet shall not the least grain fall to the earth.

³⁰ Let both grow together until the harvest, and in the time of harvest I will say to the reapers, Gather ye together first the tares and bind them in bundles to burn them, but gather the wheat into my barn.

⁴¹ The Son of man shall send forth his angels, and they shall gather out of his kingdom all things that offend and those who do iniquity

⁴³ Then shall the righteous shine forth as the sun in the kingdom of their Father. He who has ears to hear, let him hear.

⁴⁹ So shall it be at the end of the age; the angels shall come forth and separate the wicked from among the just ⁵⁰ and shall cast them into the furnace of fire; there shall be wailing and gnashing of teeth.

⁴³ And if thy hand causes thee to fall, cut it off; it is better for thee to enter into life maimed than having two hands to go into hell, into the fire that can never be quenched, ⁴⁴ where their worm does not die, and the fire is never quenched. ⁴⁵ And if thy foot causes thee to fall, cut it off; it is better for thee to enter halt into life than having two feet to be cast into hell, into the fire that can never be quenched, ⁴⁶ where their worm does not die, and the fire is never quenched. ⁴⁷ And if thine eye causes thee to fall, pluck it out; it is better for thee to enter into the kingdom of God with one eye than having two eyes to be cast into hell, ⁴⁸ where their worm does not die, and the fire is never quenched.

¹⁷ whose fan is in his hand, and he will thoroughly purge his threshing floor and will gather the wheat into his storehouse, but the chaff he will burn with fire unquenchable.

²² But when he heard that Archelaus reigned in Judaea in the place of his father Herod, he was afraid to go there; notwithstanding, being warned by divine revelation in dreams, he withdrew into the parts of Galilee,

⁹ ¶ And it came to pass in those days that Jesus came from Nazareth a city of Galilee and was baptized of John in the Jordan. ¹⁰ And as soon as he was come out of the water, John saw the heavens opened and the Spirit like a dove descending and resting upon him; ¹¹ and there came a voice from heaven, saying, Thou art my dear Son, in whom I delight.

²¹ ¶ Now when all the people were baptized, it came to pass that, Jesus also being baptized and praying, the heaven was opened, ²² and the Holy Spirit descended in a bodily shape like a dove upon him, and a voice came from heaven, which said, Thou art my beloved Son; in thee is my delight.

³² And John gave testimony, saying, I saw the Spirit descending from heaven like a dove, and it abode upon him.

⁴³ And whence is this to me, that the mother of my Lord should come to me?

¹⁶ And of his fullness we have all received, and grace for grace.

³ Jesus answered and said unto him, Verily, verily, I say unto thee, Except a person be born again from above, he cannot see the kingdom of God. ⁴ Nicodemus said unto him, How can a man be born when he is old? Can he enter the second time into his mother’s womb and be born? ⁵ Jesus answered, Verily, verily, I say unto thee, Unless a man is born of water and of the Spirit, he cannot enter into the kingdom of God. ⁶ That which is born of the flesh is flesh, and that which is born of the Spirit is spirit. ⁷ Marvel not that I said unto thee, Ye must be born again from above.

⁶ Then he came to Simon Peter, and Peter said unto him, Lord, dost thou wash my feet? ⁷ Jesus answered and said unto him, What I do thou dost not understand now, but thou shalt understand afterwards. ⁸ Peter said unto him, Thou shalt never wash my feet. Jesus answered him, If I wash thee not, thou shalt have no part with me.

⁵ For John truly baptized in water, but ye shall be baptized in the Holy Spirit not many days from now. ⁶ ¶ Then those that were come together asked of him, saying, Lord, wilt thou at this time restore again the kingdom to Israel? ⁷ And he said unto them, It is not for you to know the times or the seasons, which the Father has put under his authority only. ⁸ But ye shall receive the virtue of the Holy Spirit which shall come upon you, and ye shall be witnesses unto me both in Jerusalem and in all Judaea and in Samaria and unto the uttermost part of the earth.

²³ for all have sinned and are made destitute of the glory of God,

²⁵ whom God purposed for reconciliation through faith in his blood for the manifestation of his righteousness, for the remission of sins that are past, by the patience of God,

²² But the scripture has concluded all under sin that the promise by faith of Jesus Christ might be given to the believers.

⁶ And because ye are sons, God has sent forth the Spirit of his Son into your hearts, crying, Abba, Father;

³ among whom also we all had our conversation in times past in the lusts of our flesh, fulfilling the desires of the flesh and of the mind and were by nature the children of wrath, even as all the others. ⁴ ¶ But God, who is rich in mercy, for his great charity with which he loved us, ⁵ even as we were dead in sins, he has made us alive together with the Christ (by whose grace ye are saved)

⁹ After this I saw, and, behold, a great multitude, which no man could number, of all nations and kindreds and peoples and tongues stood before the throne and before the Lamb clothed with long white robes and palms in their hands ¹⁰ and cried with a loud voice, saying, Salvation unto him who is seated upon the throne of our God and unto the Lamb. ¹¹ And all the angels stood round about the throne and about the elders and the four animals; and they fell upon their faces before the throne and worshipped God, ¹² saying, Amen: The blessing and the glory and the wisdom and the thanksgiving and the honour and the power and the might, be unto our God for ever and ever. Amen. ¹³ ¶ And one of the elders responded and asked me, Who are these who are arrayed in long white robes? and where did they come from? ¹⁴ And I said unto him, lord, thou knowest. And he said to me, These are those who came out of great tribulation and have washed their long robes, and made them white in the blood of the Lamb. ¹⁵ Therefore, they are before the throne of God and serve him day and night in his temple, and he that is seated on the throne shall dwell among them. ¹⁶ They shall hunger no more neither thirst anymore; neither shall the sun be thrust upon them nor any other heat. ¹⁷ For the Lamb which is in the midst of the throne shall govern them and shall lead them unto living fountains of waters, and God shall wipe away all tears from their eyes.

⁷ Then said I, Behold, I come; in the volume of the book it is written of me, ⁸ I delight to do thy will, O my God; thy law is within my bowels.

²¹ The LORD, jealous for his righteousness, will magnify the law and enlarge it.

⁶ And they were both righteous before God, walking in all the commandments and ordinances of the Lord, blameless.

³⁴ Jesus said unto them, My food is to do the will of him that sent me and to finish his work.

²⁹ And he that sent me is with me: the Father has not left me alone, for I always do those things that please him.

⁷ Jesus answered and said unto him, What I do thou dost not understand now, but thou shalt understand afterwards. ⁸ Peter said unto him, Thou shalt never wash my feet. Jesus answered him, If I wash thee not, thou shalt have no part with me. ⁹ Simon Peter said unto him, Lord, not my feet only, but also my hands and my head.

¹⁵ For I have given you an example that ye should do as I have done to you.

¹⁰ If ye keep my commandments, ye shall abide in my love, even as I have kept my Father’s commandments and abide in his love.

⁷ but emptied himself, taking the form of a slave, made in the likeness of men, ⁸ and being found in fashion as a man, he humbled himself and became obedient unto death, even the death of the cross {Gr. stauros – stake}.

²⁶ For it was expedient that we have such a high priest, who is holy, innocent, undefiled, separate from sinners, and made higher than the heavens,

²¹ Because for this were ye called: for the Christ also suffered for us, leaving us an example, that ye should follow his steps ²² who did no sin neither was guile found in his mouth, ²³ who, when he was cursed, did not return the curse; when he suffered, he did not threaten, but committed himself to him that judges righteously; ²⁴ he himself bore our sins in his own body on the tree, that we, being dead to sins, should live unto righteousness; by whose wound ye were healed.

⁶ He that says he abides in him ought himself also so to walk, even as he walked.

² And the Spirit of the LORD shall rest upon him, the Spirit of wisdom and understanding, the Spirit of counsel and might, the Spirit of knowledge and of the fear of the LORD,

¹ ¶ Behold my slave, whom I uphold; my elect, in whom my soul delights; I have put my Spirit upon him; he shall give judgment unto the Gentiles.

²¹ And this shall be my covenant with them, said the LORD; My spirit that is upon thee, and my words, which I have put in thy mouth, shall not depart out of thy mouth, nor out of the mouth of thy seed, nor out of the mouth of thy seed’s seed, saith the LORD, from now on and for ever.

¹ ¶ The Spirit of the Lord GOD is upon me because the LORD has anointed me; he has sent me to preach good tidings unto those who are cast down; to bind up the wounds of the broken-hearted, to proclaim liberty to the captives, and the opening of the prison to those that are bound;

¹ ¶ Now it came to pass at thirty years, in the fourth month, in the fifth day of the month, as I was among the captives by the river of Chebar, that the heavens were opened, and I saw visions of God.

¹⁰ And as soon as he was come out of the water, John saw the heavens opened and the Spirit like a dove descending and resting upon him;

³¹ And I knew him not; but that he should be made manifest to Israel, therefore am I come baptizing with water.

³⁴ For he whom God has sent speaks the words of God; for God does not give the Spirit by measure unto him.

⁵⁶ and said, Behold, I see the heavens opened and the Son of man standing on the right hand of God.

¹⁸ And he is the head of the body, the congregation {Gr. ekklesia – called out ones}, who is the beginning, the firstborn from the dead, that in all things he might have the preeminence. ¹⁹ For it pleased the Father that in him should all fullness dwell

⁷ ¶ I will declare the decree; the LORD hath said unto me, Thou art my Son; this day I have begotten thee.

¹⁸ Behold my servant, whom I have chosen, my beloved, in whom my soul is well pleased; I will put my Spirit upon him, and he shall declare judgment unto the Gentiles.

⁵ While he yet spoke, behold, a cloud of light overshadowed them, and, behold, a voice out of the cloud, which said, This is my beloved Son, in whom I am well pleased; hear ye him.

¹¹ and there came a voice from heaven, saying, Thou art my dear Son, in whom I delight.

⁷ And a cloud came that overshadowed them, and a voice came out of the cloud, saying, This is my beloved Son; hear ye him.

²² and the Holy Spirit descended in a bodily shape like a dove upon him, and a voice came from heaven, which said, Thou art my beloved Son; in thee is my delight.

³⁵ And a voice came out of the cloud, saying, This is my beloved Son; hear him.

³⁷ And the Father himself, who has sent me, has borne witness of me. Ye have neither heard his voice at any time nor seen his appearance.

²⁸ Father, clarify thy name. Then there came a voice from the heaven, saying, I have clarified it and will clarify it again. ²⁹ The people, therefore, that were present and heard it, said that it thundered; others said, An angel spoke to him. ³⁰ Jesus answered and said, This voice came not because of me, but for your sakes.

⁶ to the praise of the glory of his grace, in which he has made us accepted in the beloved;

¹⁷ For he received from God the Father honour and glory, when there came such a voice to him from the excellent glory, This is my beloved Son, in whom I am well pleased.

² And I heard a voice from heaven as the voice of many waters and as the voice of a great thunder; and I heard the voice of harpers harping with their harps;
