¹ A Davidic prayer
Help Us, God LORD, listen and answer me, for I am afflicted and needy.

¹⁴ But you do see! You take note of trouble and grief in order to take the matter into your own hand. The helpless one commits himself to you; you have been the orphan’s helper.

⁶ I call upon you, for you will answer me, God. Listen closely to me and hear my prayer.

² Listen to me, and deliver me quickly. Become a rock of safety for me, a fortified citadel to deliver me;

⁶ This poor man cried out, and the LORD heard and delivered him from all of his distress.

¹⁷ But I am poor and needy; may the Lord think about me. You are my help and deliverer. My God, do not tarry too long!

¹² For he will deliver the needy when they cry out for help, and the poor when there is no deliverer. ¹³ He will have compassion on the poor and the needy, and he will save the lives of the needy. ¹⁴ He will redeem them from oppression and violence, since their lives are precious in his sight.

¹ A prayer by the afflicted man who is overwhelmed and talks about his troubles with the LORD.
A Prayer for Help LORD, hear my prayer! May my cry for help come to you.

¹⁷ He will turn to the prayer of the destitute, not despising their prayer.

²² Remove scorn and disrespect from me, for I observe your decrees.

¹⁷ Extend your ear, LORD, and listen! Open your eyes, LORD, and look! Listen to all the words Sennacherib has sent to mock the living God.

² All these things my hand has made, and so all these things came into being,” declares the LORD. “But this is the one to whom I will look favorably: to the one who is humble and contrite in spirit, and who trembles at my message.

¹⁸ Turn your ear and listen, O God. Open your eyes and look at our desolation and at the city that is called by your name. We’re not presenting our requests before you because of our righteousness, but because of your great compassion.

³ The Blessed Attitudes
“How blessed are those who are destitute in spirit, because the kingdom from heaven belongs to them!

¹⁸ “The Spirit of the Lord is upon me; he has anointed me to tell the good news to the poor. He has sent me to announce release to the prisoners and recovery of sight to the blind, to set oppressed people free,

⁹ A brother of humble means should rejoice in his having been exalted, ¹⁰ and a rich person in his having been humbled, because he will fade away like a wild flower.

⁵ Listen, my dear brothers! God has chosen the poor in the world to become rich in faith and to be heirs of the kingdom that he promised to those who keep on loving him, has he not?
