¹ Lo, mine eye hath seen all this, mine ear hath heard and understood it. ² What ye know, do I know also; I am not inferior unto you. ³ Notwithstanding I would speak to the Almighty, and I desire to reason with God. ⁴ But ye are plasterers of lies, ye are all physicians of no value. ⁵ Oh that ye would altogether hold your peace! and it would be your wisdom. ⁶ Hear now my reasoning, and hearken to the pleadings of my lips. ⁷ Will ye speak unrighteously for God, and talk deceitfully for Him? ⁸ Will ye show Him favour? Will ye contend for God? ⁹ Would it be good that He should search you out? Or as one mocketh a man, will ye mock Him? ¹⁰ He will surely reprove you, if ye do secretly show favour. ¹¹ Shall not His majesty terrify you, and His dread fall upon you? ¹² Your memorials shall be like unto ashes, your eminences to eminences of clay. ¹³ Hold your peace, let me alone, that I may speak, and let come on me what will. ¹⁴ Wherefore? I will take my flesh in my teeth, and put my life in my hand. ¹⁵ Though He slay me, yet will I trust in Him; but I will argue my ways before Him. ¹⁶ This also shall be my salvation, that a hypocrite cannot come before Him. ¹⁷ Hear diligently my speech, and let my declaration be in your ears. ¹⁸ Behold now, I have ordered my cause; I know that I shall be justified. ¹⁹ Who is he that will contend with me? For then would I hold my peace and die. ²⁰ Only do not two things unto me, then will I not hide myself from Thee: ²¹ Withdraw Thy hand far from me; and let not Thy terror make me afraid. ²² Then call Thou, and I will answer; or let me speak, and answer Thou me. ²³ How many are mine iniquities and sins? Make me to know my transgression and my sin. ²⁴ Wherefore hidest Thou Thy face, and holdest me for Thine enemy? ²⁵ Wilt Thou harass a driven leaf? And wilt Thou pursue the dry stubble? ²⁶ That Thou shouldest write bitter things against me, and make me to inherit the iniquities of my youth. ²⁷ Thou puttest my feet also in the stocks, and lookest narrowly unto all my paths; Thou drawest Thee a line about the soles of my feet; ²⁸ Though I am like a wine-skin that consumeth, like a garment that is moth-eaten.

¹² Now a word was secretly brought to me, and mine ear received a whisper thereof.

⁹ Who doeth great things and unsearchable, marvellous things without number; ¹⁰ Who giveth rain upon the earth, and sendeth waters upon the fields; ¹¹ So that He setteth up on high those that are low, and those that mourn are exalted to safety. ¹² He frustrateth the devices of the crafty, so that their hands can perform nothing substantial. ¹³ He taketh the wise in their own craftiness; and the counsel of the wily is carried headlong. ¹⁴ They meet with darkness in the day-time, and grope at noonday as in the night. ¹⁵ But He saveth from the sword of their mouth, even the needy from the hand of the mighty. ¹⁶ So the poor hath hope, and iniquity stoppeth her mouth.

²⁷ Lo this, we have searched it, so it is; hear it, and know thou it for thy good.

⁸ For inquire, I pray thee, of the former generation, and apply thyself to that which their fathers have searched out - ⁹ For we are but of yesterday, and know nothing, because our days upon earth are a shadow - ¹⁰ Shall not they teach thee, and tell thee, and utter words out of their heart?

⁹ Who knoweth not among all these, that the hand of the LORD hath wrought this? ¹⁰ In whose hand is the soul of every living thing, and the breath of all mankind. - ¹¹ Doth not the ear try words, even as the palate tasteth its food? ¹² Is wisdom with aged men, and understanding in length of days? - ¹³ With Him is wisdom and might; He hath counsel and understanding. ¹⁴ Behold, He breaketh down, and it cannot be built again; He shutteth up a man, and there can be no opening. ¹⁵ Behold, He withholdeth the waters, and they dry up; also He sendeth them out, and they overturn the earth. ¹⁶ With Him is strength and sound wisdom; the deceived and the deceiver are His. ¹⁷ He leadeth counsellors away stripped, and judges maketh He fools. ¹⁸ He looseth the bond of kings, and bindeth their loins with a girdle. ¹⁹ He leadeth priests away stripped, and overthroweth the mighty. ²⁰ He removeth the speech of men of trust, and taketh away the sense of the elders. ²¹ He poureth contempt upon princes, and looseth the belt of the strong. ²² He uncovereth deep things out of darkness, and bringeth out to light the shadow of death. ²³ He increaseth the nations, and destroyeth them; He enlargeth the nations, and leadeth them away. ²⁴ He taketh away the heart of the chiefs of the people of the land, and causeth them to wander in a wilderness where there is no way. ²⁵ They grope in the dark without light, and He maketh them to stagger like a drunken man.

¹⁷ I will tell thee, hear thou me; and that which I have seen I will declare - ¹⁸ Which wise men have told from their fathers, and have not hid it;

³ Who is this that hideth counsel without knowledge? Therefore have I uttered that which I understood not, things too wonderful for me, which I knew not. ⁴ Hear, I beseech Thee, and I will speak; I will demand of Thee, and declare Thou unto me. ⁵ I had heard of Thee by the hearing of the ear; but now mine eye seeth Thee; ⁶ Wherefore I abhor my words, and repent, seeing I am dust and ashes.

³ That which we have heard and known, and our fathers have told us, ⁴ We will not hide from their children, telling to the generation to come the praises of the LORD, and His strength, and His wondrous works that He hath done.

³ that which we have seen and heard declare we unto you, that ye also may have fellowship with us; yea, and our fellowship is with the Father, and with his Son Jesus Christ:

³ But I have understanding as well as you; I am not inferior to you; yea, who knoweth not such things as these?

⁸ Dost thou hearken in the council of God? And dost thou restrain wisdom to thyself? ⁹ What knowest thou, that we know not? What understandest thou, which is not in us?

³⁵ 'Job speaketh without knowledge, and his words are without discernment.'

¹⁶ But Job doth open his mouth in vanity; he multiplieth words without knowledge.

² Hear attentively the noise of His voice, and the sound that goeth out of His mouth.

⁴ Behold, I am of small account; what shall I answer Thee? I lay my hand upon my mouth. ⁵ Once have I spoken, but I will not answer again; yea, twice, but I will proceed no further.

⁷ And it was so, that after the LORD had spoken these words unto Job, the LORD said to Eliphaz the Temanite: 'My wrath is kindled against thee, and against thy two friends; for ye have not spoken of Me the thing that is right, as My servant Job hath.

¹ Now concerning things sacrificed to idols; We know that we all have knowledge. Knowledge puffeth up, but love edifieth. ² If any man thinketh that he knoweth anything, he knoweth not yet as he ought to know,

⁴ For if he that cometh preacheth another Jesus, whom we did not preach, or if ye receive a different spirit, which ye did not receive, or a different gospel, which ye did not accept, ye do well to bear with him. ⁵ For I reckon that I am not a whit behind the very chiefest apostles.

¹⁶ I say again, let no man think me foolish, but if ye do, yet as foolish receive me, that I also may glory a little. ¹⁷ That which I speak, I speak not after the Lord, but as in foolishness, in this confidence of glorying. ¹⁸ Seeing that many glory after the flesh, I will glory also.

¹¹ I am become foolish in glorying; ye compelled me, for I ought to have been commended of you; for in nothing was I behind the very chiefest apostles, though I am nothing.

³ If one should desire to contend with Him, he could not answer Him one of a thousand.

¹⁴ How much less shall I answer Him, and choose out my arguments with Him? ¹⁵ Whom, though I were righteous, yet would I not answer; I would make supplication to Him that contendeth with me.

³⁴ Let Him take His rod away from me, and let not His terror make me afraid; ³⁵ Then would I speak, and not fear Him; for I am not so with myself.

⁵ But oh that God would speak, and open His lips against thee;

¹⁵ Though He slay me, yet will I trust in Him; but I will argue my ways before Him.

²² Then call Thou, and I will answer; or let me speak, and answer Thou me.

³ Oh that I knew where I might find Him, that I might come even to His seat! ⁴ I would order my cause before Him, and fill my mouth with arguments. ⁵ I would know the words which He would answer me, and understand what He would say unto me. ⁶ Would He contend with me in His great power? Nay; but He would give heed unto me. ⁷ There the upright might reason with Him; so should I be delivered for ever from my Judge.

³⁵ Oh that I had one to hear me! - Lo, here is my signature, let the Almighty answer me - and that I had the indictment which mine adversary hath written!

¹⁸ Come now, and let us reason together, saith the LORD; though your sins be as scarlet, they shall be as white as snow; though they be red like crimson, they shall be as wool. ¹⁹ If ye be willing and obedient, ye shall eat the good of the land; ²⁰ But if ye refuse and rebel, ye shall be devoured with the sword; for the mouth of the LORD hath spoken.

²¹ Produce your cause, saith the LORD; bring forth your reasons, saith the King of Jacob.

¹ Right wouldest Thou be, O LORD, were I to contend with Thee, yet will I reason with Thee: Wherefore doth the way of the wicked prosper? Wherefore are all they secure that deal very treacherously? ² Thou hast planted them, yea, they have taken root; they grow, yea, they bring forth fruit; Thou art near in their mouth, and far from their reins.

² Hear, O ye mountains, the LORD'S controversy, and ye enduring rocks, the foundations of the earth; for the LORD hath a controversy with His people, and He will plead with Israel.

¹⁶ (20:13) Thou shalt not bear false witness against thy neighbour.

⁷ Remember, I pray thee, who ever perished, being innocent? Or where were the upright cut off? ⁸ According as I have seen, they that plow iniquity, and sow mischief, reap the same. ⁹ By the breath of God they perish, and by the blast of His anger are they consumed. ¹⁰ The lion roareth, and the fierce lion howleth - yet the teeth of the young lions are broken. ¹¹ The old lion perisheth for lack of prey, and the whelps of the lioness are scattered abroad.

¹ Call now; is there any that will answer thee? And to which of the holy ones wilt thou turn? ² For anger killeth the foolish man, and envy slayeth the silly one. ³ I have seen the foolish taking root; but suddenly I beheld his habitation cursed. ⁴ His children are far from safety, and are crushed in the gate, with none to deliver them. ⁵ Whose harvest the hungry eateth up, and taketh it even out of the thorns, and the snare gapeth for their substance.

²¹ For now ye are become His; ye see a terror, and are afraid.

³ Doth God pervert judgment? Or doth the Almighty pervert justice? ⁴ If thy children sinned against Him, He delivered them into the hand of their transgression.

² I have heard many such things; sorry comforters are ye all.

⁵ Yea, the light of the wicked shall be put out, and the spark of his fire shall not shine. ⁶ The light shall be dark in his tent, and his lamp over him shall be put out. ⁷ The steps of his strength shall be straitened, and his own counsel shall cast him down. ⁸ For he is cast into a net by his own feet, and he walketh upon the toils. ⁹ A gin shall take him by the heel, and a snare shall lay hold on him. ¹⁰ A noose is hid for him in the ground, and a trap for him in the way. ¹¹ Terrors shall overwhelm him on every side, and shall entrap him at his feet. ¹² His trouble shall be ravenous, and calamity shall be ready for his fall. ¹³ It shall devour the members of his body, yea, the first-born of death shall devour his members. ¹⁴ That wherein he trusteth shall be plucked out of his tent; and he shall be brought to the king of terrors. ¹⁵ There shall dwell in his tent that which is none of his; brimstone shall be scattered upon his habitation. ¹⁶ His roots shall dry up beneath, and above shall his branch wither. ¹⁷ His remembrance shall perish from the earth, and he shall have no name abroad. ¹⁸ He shall be driven from light into darkness, and chased out of the world. ¹⁹ He shall have neither son nor son's son among his people, nor any remaining in his dwellings. ²⁰ They that come after shall be astonished at his day, as they that went before are affrighted. ²¹ Surely such are the dwellings of the wicked, and this is the place of him that knoweth not God.

²⁷ Behold, I know your thoughts, and the devices which ye wrongfully imagine against me. ²⁸ For ye say: 'Where is the house of the prince? And where is the tent wherein the wicked dwelt?' ²⁹ Have ye not asked them that go by the way; and will ye misdeem their tokens, ³⁰ That the evil man is reserved to the day of calamity, that they are led forth to the day of wrath? ³¹ But who shall declare his way to his face? And who shall repay him what he hath done? ³² For he is borne to the grave, and watch is kept over his tomb. ³³ The clods of the valley are sweet unto him, and all men draw after him, as there were innumerable before him. ³⁴ How then comfort ye me in vain? And as for your answers, there remaineth only faithlessness?

⁶ For thou hast taken pledges of thy brother for nought, and stripped the naked of their clothing. ⁷ Thou hast not given water to the weary to drink, and thou hast withholden bread from the hungry. ⁸ And as a mighty man, who hath the earth, and as a man of rank, who dwelleth in it, ⁹ Thou hast sent widows away empty, and the arms of the fatherless have been broken. ¹⁰ Therefore snares are round about thee, and sudden dread affrighted thee, ¹¹ Or darkness, that thou canst not see, and abundance of waters cover thee. ¹² Is not God in the height of heaven? And behold the topmost of the stars, how high they are! ¹³ And thou sayest: 'What doth God know? Can He judge through the dark cloud? ¹⁴ Thick clouds are a covering to Him, that He seeth not; and He walketh in the circuit of heaven.' ¹⁵ Wilt thou keep the old way which wicked men have trodden? ¹⁶ Who were snatched away before their time, whose foundation was poured out as a stream; ¹⁷ Who said unto God: 'Depart from us'; and what could the Almighty do unto them? ¹⁸ Yet He filled their houses with good things - but the counsel of the wicked is far from me. ¹⁹ The righteous saw it, and were glad, and the innocent laugh them to scorn: ²⁰ 'Surely their substance is cut off, and their abundance the fire hath consumed.' ²¹ Acquaint now thyself with Him, and be at peace; thereby shall thine increase be good. ²² Receive, I pray thee, instruction from His mouth, and lay up His words in thy heart. ²³ If thou return to the Almighty, thou shalt be built up - if thou put away unrighteousness far from thy tents, ²⁴ And lay thy treasure in the dust, and the gold of Ophir among the stones of the brooks; ²⁵ And the Almighty be thy treasure, and precious silver unto thee; ²⁶ Then surely shalt thou have thy delight in the Almighty, and shalt lift up thy face unto God. ²⁷ Thou shalt make thy prayer unto Him, and He will hear thee, and thou shalt pay thy vows; ²⁸ Thou shalt also decree a thing, and it shall be established unto thee, and light shall shine upon thy ways. ²⁹ When they cast thee down, thou shalt say: 'There is lifting up'; for the humble person He saveth. ³⁰ He delivereth him that is innocent, yea, thou shalt be delivered through the cleanness of thy hands.

⁶⁹ The proud have forged a lie against me; but I with my whole heart will keep Thy precepts.

¹⁴ They have healed also the hurt of My people lightly, saying: 'Peace, peace', when there is no peace.

²² Is there no balm in Gilead? Is there no physician there? Why then is not the health of the daughter of my people recovered?

³² Behold, I am against them that prophesy lying dreams, saith the LORD, and do tell them, and cause My people to err by their lies, and by their wantonness; yet I sent them not, nor commanded them; neither can they profit this people at all, saith the LORD.

¹³ None deemeth of thy wound that it may be bound up; thou hast no healing medicines.

¹¹ Go up into Gilead, and take balm, O virgin daughter of Egypt; in vain dost thou use many medicines; there is no cure for thee.

⁴ The weak have ye not strengthened, neither have ye healed that which was sick, neither have ye bound up that which was broken, neither have ye brought back that which was driven away, neither have ye sought that which was lost; but with force have ye ruled over them and with rigour.

¹³ And when Ephraim saw his sickness, and Judah his wound, Ephraim went to Assyria, and sent to King Contentious; but he is not able to heal you, neither shall he cure you of your wound.

¹⁷ And when Jesus heard it, he saith unto them, They that are whole have no need of a physician, but they that are sick; I came not to call the righteous, but sinners to repentance.

²⁶ and had suffered many things of many physicians, and had spent all that she had, and was nothing bettered, but rather grew worse,

³ Thy boastings have made men hold their peace, and thou hast mocked, with none to make thee ashamed;

¹³ Hold your peace, let me alone, that I may speak, and let come on me what will.

³ Shall windy words have an end? Or what provoketh thee that thou answerest?

² How long will ye lay snares for words? Consider, and afterwards we will speak.

² How long will ye vex my soul, and crush me with words?

² Hear diligently my speech; and let this be your consolations. ³ Suffer me, that I may speak; and after that I have spoken, mock on.

¹ So these three men ceased to answer Job, because he was righteous in his own eyes.

²⁸ Even a fool, when he holdeth his peace, is counted wise; and he that shutteth his lips is esteemed as a man of understanding.

³ (5:2) For a dream cometh through a multitude of business; and a fool's voice through a multitude of words.

¹³ Therefore the prudent doth keep silence in such a time; for it is an evil time.

¹⁹ Wherefore, my beloved brethren, let every man be swift to hear, slow to speak, slow to wrath:

⁷ And when they told it to Jotham, he went and stood in the top of mount Gerizim, and lifted up his voice, and cried, and said unto them: 'Hearken unto me, ye men of Shechem, that God may hearken unto you.

¹ Howbeit, Job, I pray thee, hear my speech, and hearken to all my words. ² Behold now, I have opened my mouth, my tongue hath spoken in my mouth. ³ My words shall utter the uprightness of my heart; and that which my lips know they shall speak sincerely.

² Hear my words, ye wise men; and give ear unto me, ye that have knowledge.

⁶ Hear, for I will speak excellent things, and the opening of my lips shall be right things. ⁷ For my mouth shall utter truth, and wickedness is an abomination to my lips.

⁷ Remember, I pray thee, who ever perished, being innocent? Or where were the upright cut off?

² Should not the multitude of words be answered? And should a man full of talk be accounted right? ³ Thy boastings have made men hold their peace, and thou hast mocked, with none to make thee ashamed; ⁴ And thou hast said: 'My doctrine is pure, and I am clean in Thine eyes.'

⁵ He that denounceth his friends for the sake of flattery, even the eyes of his children shall fail.

⁴ Surely my lips shall not speak unrighteousness, neither shall my tongue utter deceit;

²¹ Let me not, I pray you, respect any man's person; neither will I give flattering titles unto any man. ²² For I know not to give flattering titles; else would my Maker soon take me away.

⁴ For truly my words are not false; one that is upright in mind is with thee.

² They shall put you out of the synagogues; yea, the hour cometh, that whosoever killeth you shall think that he offereth service unto God.

⁵ But if our righteousness commendeth the righteousness of God, what shall we say? Is God unrighteous who visiteth with wrath? (I speak after the manner of men.) ⁶ God forbid; for then how shall God judge the world? ⁷ But if the truth of God through my lie abounded unto his glory, why am I also still judged as a sinner? ⁸ and why not (as we are slanderously reported, and as some affirm that we say), Let us do evil, that good may come? whose condemnation is just.

² but we have renounced the hidden things of shame, not walking in craftiness, nor handling the word of God deceitfully, but by the manifestation of the truth commending ourselves to every man's conscience in the sight of God.

² Thou shalt not follow a multitude to do evil; neither shalt thou bear witness in a cause to turn aside after a multitude to pervert justice; ³ neither shalt thou favour a poor man in his cause.

¹⁵ Ye shall do no unrighteousness in judgment; thou shalt not respect the person of the poor, nor favour the person of the mighty; but in righteousness shalt thou judge thy neighbour.

²¹ Let me not, I pray you, respect any man's person; neither will I give flattering titles unto any man.

¹⁹ That respecteth not the persons of princes, nor regardeth the rich more than the poor? For they all are the work of His hands.

²³ These also are sayings of the wise. To have respect of persons in judgment is not good.

⁹ Therefore have I also made you contemptible and base before all the people, according as ye have not kept My ways, but have had respect of persons in the law.

¹⁶ With Him is strength and sound wisdom; the deceived and the deceiver are His.

² Surely there are mockers with me, and mine eye abideth in their provocation.

³⁶ Would that Job were tried unto the end, because of his answering like wicked men.

²¹ (44:22) Would not God search this out? For He knoweth the secrets of the heart.

²³ Search me, O God, and know my heart, try me, and know my thoughts;

²² Now therefore be ye not scoffers, lest your bands be made strong; for an extermination wholly determined have I heard from the Lord, the GOD of hosts, upon the whole land.

¹⁰ I the LORD search the heart, I try the reins, even to give every man according to his ways, according to the fruit of his doings.

⁷ Be not deceived, God is not mocked; for whatsoever a man soweth, that shall he also reap. ⁸ For he that soweth unto his own flesh shall of the flesh reap corruption, but he that soweth unto the Spirit shall of the Spirit reap eternal life.

⁷ And it was so, that after the LORD had spoken these words unto Job, the LORD said to Eliphaz the Temanite: 'My wrath is kindled against thee, and against thy two friends; for ye have not spoken of Me the thing that is right, as My servant Job hath. ⁸ Now therefore, take unto you seven bullocks and seven rams, and go to My servant Job, and offer up for yourselves a burnt- offering; and My servant Job shall pray for you; for him will I accept, that I do not unto you aught unseemly; for ye have not spoken of Me the thing that is right, as my servant Job hath.'

²¹ These things hast thou done, and should I have kept silence? Thou hadst thought that I was altogether such a one as thyself; but I will reprove thee, and set the cause before thine eyes. ²² Now consider this, ye that forget God, lest I tear in pieces, and there be none to deliver.

² 'How long will ye judge unjustly, and respect the persons of the wicked? Selah

⁹ but if ye have respect of persons, ye commit sin, being convicted by the law as transgressors.

¹⁶ Terror and dread falleth upon them; by the greatness of Thine arm they are as still as a stone; till Thy people pass over, O LORD, till the people pass over that Thou hast gotten.

²¹ Withdraw Thy hand far from me; and let not Thy terror make me afraid.

²³ For calamity from God was a terror to me, and by reason of His majesty I could do nothing.

¹²⁰ My flesh shuddereth for fear of Thee; and I am afraid of Thy judgments.

¹³ The LORD of hosts, Him shall ye sanctify; and let Him be your fear, and let Him be your dread.

²² Fear ye not Me? saith the LORD; Will ye not tremble at My presence? Who have placed the sand for the bound of the sea, an everlasting ordinance, which it cannot pass; and though the waves thereof toss themselves, yet can they not prevail; though they roar, yet can they not pass over it.

¹⁰ But the LORD God is the true God, He is the living God, and the everlasting King; at His wrath the earth trembleth, and the nations are not able to abide His indignation.

²⁸ And fear not them that kill the body, but are not able to kill the soul; but rather fear him who is able to destroy both the soul and the body in hell.

³ And they sing the song of Moses the servant of God, and the song of the Lamb, saying, Great and marvelous are thy works, O Lord God, the Almighty, righteous and true are thy ways, thou King of the nations. ⁴ Who shall not fear thee, O Lord, and glorify thy name? for thou only art holy, for all the nations shall come and worship before thee, for thy righteous acts have been made manifest.

⁷ Then the LORD God formed man of the dust of the ground, and breathed into his nostrils the breath of life; and man became a living soul.

²⁷ And Abraham answered and said: 'Behold now, I have taken upon me to speak unto the Lord, who am but dust and ashes.

¹⁴ And the LORD said unto Moses: 'Write this for a memorial in the book, and rehearse it in the ears of Joshua: for I will utterly blot out the remembrance of Amalek from under heaven.'

¹⁹ How much more them that dwell in houses of clay, whose foundation is in the dust, who are crushed before the moth!

¹⁷ His remembrance shall perish from the earth, and he shall have no name abroad.

¹⁶ (34:17) The face of the LORD is against them that do evil, to cut off the remembrance of them from the earth.

¹² (102:13) But Thou, O LORD, sittest enthroned for ever; and Thy name is unto all generations.

¹⁵ Let them be before the LORD continually, that He may cut off the memory of them from the earth.

⁷ The memory of the righteous shall be for a blessing; but the name of the wicked shall rot.

¹⁴ The dead live not, the shades rise not; to that end hast Thou punished and destroyed them, and made all their memory to perish.

¹ For we know that if the earthly house of our tabernacle be dissolved, we have a building from God, a house not made with hands, eternal, in the heavens.

⁹ Even that it would please God to crush me; that He would let loose His hand, and cut me off! ¹⁰ Then should I yet have comfort; yea, I would exult in pain, though He spare not; for I have not denied the words of the Holy One.

¹¹ Therefore I will not refrain my mouth; I will speak in the anguish of my spirit; I will complain in the bitterness of my soul.

¹⁵ So that my soul chooseth strangling, and death rather than these my bones. ¹⁶ I loathe it; I shall not live alway; let me alone; for my days are vanity.

¹ My soul is weary of my life; I will give free course to my complaint; I will speak in the bitterness of my soul.

⁵ Oh that ye would altogether hold your peace! and it would be your wisdom.

³ Suffer me, that I may speak; and after that I have spoken, mock on.

³ And when I saw that ye saved me not, I put my life in my hand, and passed over against the children of Ammon, and the LORD delivered them into my hand; wherefore then are ye come up unto me this day, to fight against me?'

⁵ for he put his life in his hand, and smote the Philistine, and the LORD wrought a great victory for all Israel; thou sawest it, and didst rejoice; wherefore then wilt thou sin against innocent blood, to slay David without a cause?'

²¹ And the woman came unto Saul, and saw that he was sore affrighted, and said unto him: 'Behold, thy handmaid hath hearkened unto thy voice, and I have put my life in my hand, and have hearkened unto thy words which thou spokest unto me.

⁴ Thou that tearest thyself in thine anger, shall the earth be forsaken for thee? Or shall the rock be removed out of its place?

¹⁰⁹ My soul is continually in my hand; yet have I not forgotten Thy law.

⁵ The fool foldeth his hands together, and eateth his own flesh.

²⁰ (9:19) And one snatcheth on the right hand, and is hungry; and he eateth on the left hand, and is not satisfied; they eat every man the flesh of his own arm:

²⁶ And I will feed them that oppress thee with their own flesh; and they shall be drunken with their own blood, as with sweet wine; and all flesh shall know that I the LORD am thy Saviour, and thy Redeemer, the Mighty One of Jacob.

⁶ My days are swifter than a weaver's shuttle, and are spent without hope.

⁷ Although Thou knowest that I shall not be condemned; and there is none that can deliver out of Thy hand?

¹⁸ Behold now, I have ordered my cause; I know that I shall be justified.

¹⁷ Although there is no violence in my hands, and my prayer is pure.

²¹ That He would set aright a man contending with God, as a son of man setteth aright his neighbour!

²⁵ But as for me, I know that my Redeemer liveth, and that He will witness at the last upon the dust; ²⁶ And when after my skin this is destroyed, then without my flesh shall I see God; ²⁷ Whom I, even I, shall see for myself, and mine eyes shall behold, and not another's. My reins are consumed within me. ²⁸ If ye say: 'How we will persecute him!' seeing that the root of the matter is found in me;

¹⁰ For He knoweth the way that I take; when He hath tried me, I shall come forth as gold.

⁵ Far be it from me that I should justify you; till I die I will not put away mine integrity from me.

³¹ If the men of my tent said not: 'Who can find one that hath not been satisfied with his meat?' ³² The stranger did not lodge in the street; my doors I opened to the roadside. ³³ If after the manner of men I covered my transgressions, by hiding mine iniquity in my bosom - ³⁴ Because I feared the great multitude, and the most contemptible among families terrified me, so that I kept silence, and went not out of the door. ³⁵ Oh that I had one to hear me! - Lo, here is my signature, let the Almighty answer me - and that I had the indictment which mine adversary hath written! ³⁶ Surely I would carry it upon my shoulder; I would bind it unto me as a crown. ³⁷ I would declare unto him the number of my steps; as a prince would I go near unto him.

² Shall he that reproveth contend with the Almighty? He that argueth with God, let him answer it.

⁸ Wilt thou even make void My judgment? Wilt thou condemn Me, that thou mayest be justified?

⁴ Yea, though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil, for Thou art with me; Thy rod and Thy staff, they comfort me.

³² The wicked is thrust down in his misfortune; but the righteous, even when he is brought to death, hath hope.

³⁸ For I am persuaded, that neither death, nor life, nor angels, nor principalities, nor things present, nor things to come, nor powers, ³⁹ nor height, nor depth, nor any other creature, shall be able to separate us from the love of God, which is in Christ Jesus our Lord.

²⁰ because if our heart condemn us, God is greater than our heart, and knoweth all things.

² The LORD is my strength and song, and He is become my salvation; this is my God, and I will glorify Him; my father's God, and I will exalt Him.

¹³ So are the paths of all that forget God; and the hope of the godless man shall perish;

⁸ For what is the hope of the godless, though he get him gain, when God taketh away his soul? ⁹ Will God hear his cry, when trouble cometh upon him? ¹⁰ Will he have his delight in the Almighty, and call upon God at all times?

¹³ But they that are godless in heart lay up anger; they cry not for help when He bindeth them.

¹ A Psalm of David. The LORD is my light and my salvation; whom shall I fear? The LORD is the stronghold of my life; of whom shall I be afraid?

⁶ (62:7) He only is my rock and my salvation, my high tower, I shall not be moved. ⁷ (62:8) Upon God resteth my salvation and my glory; the rock of my strength, and my refuge, is in God.

¹⁴ The LORD is my strength and song; and He is become my salvation.

²¹ I will give thanks unto Thee, for Thou hast answered me, and art become my salvation.

¹ And in that day thou shalt say: 'I will give thanks unto Thee, O LORD; for though Thou was angry with me, Thine anger is turned away, and Thou comfortest me. ² Behold, God is my salvation; I will trust, and will not be afraid; for GOD the LORD is my strength and song; and He is become my salvation.'

¹⁴ The sinners in Zion are afraid; trembling hath seized the ungodly: 'Who among us shall dwell with the devouring fire? Who among us shall dwell with everlasting burnings?'

²³ Truly vain have proved the hills, the uproar on the mountains; truly in the LORD our God is the salvation of Israel.

⁴⁷ For so hath the Lord commanded us, saying, I have set thee for a light of the Gentiles, That thou shouldest be for salvation unto the uttermost part of the earth.

⁶ Hear now my reasoning, and hearken to the pleadings of my lips.

² Hear diligently my speech; and let this be your consolations.

¹ Howbeit, Job, I pray thee, hear my speech, and hearken to all my words.

² Of a truth I know that it is so; and how can man be just with God? ³ If one should desire to contend with Him, he could not answer Him one of a thousand.

²⁰ Though I be righteous, mine own mouth shall condemn me; though I be innocent, He shall prove me perverse.

⁴ I would order my cause before Him, and fill my mouth with arguments.

⁷ Gird up thy loins now like a man; I will demand of thee, and declare thou unto Me. ⁸ Wilt thou even make void My judgment? Wilt thou condemn Me, that thou mayest be justified?

²⁶ Put Me in remembrance, let us plead together; declare thou, that thou mayest be justified.

³³ Who shall lay anything to the charge of God's elect? It is God that justifieth, ³⁴ who is he that condemneth? It is Christ Jesus that died, yea rather, that was raised from the dead, who is at the right hand of God, who also maketh intercession for us.

¹² For our glorying is this, the testimony of our conscience, that in holiness and sincerity of God, not in fleshly wisdom but in the grace of God, we behaved ourselves in the world, and more abundantly to you-ward.

⁸ Thy hands have framed me and fashioned me together round about; yet Thou dost destroy me!

⁵ If indeed ye will magnify yourselves against me, and plead against me my reproach;

⁵ If thou canst, answer thou me, set thy words in order before me, stand forth. ⁶ Behold, I am toward God even as thou art; I also am formed out of the clay. ⁷ Behold, my terror shall not make thee afraid, neither shall my pressure be heavy upon thee.

³² If thou hast any thing to say, answer me; speak, for I desire to justify thee.

⁷ For the Lord GOD will help me; therefore have I not been confounded; therefore have I set my face like a flint, and I know that I shall not be ashamed. ⁸ He is near that justifieth me; who will contend with me? let us stand up together; who is mine adversary? let him come near to me.

⁹ And if I say: 'I will not make mention of Him, nor speak any more in His name', then there is in my heart as it were a burning fire shut up in my bones, and I weary myself to hold it in, but cannot.

³³ Who shall lay anything to the charge of God's elect? It is God that justifieth,

⁸ And they heard the voice of the LORD God walking in the garden toward the cool of the day; and the man and his wife hid themselves from the presence of the LORD God amongst the trees of the garden. ⁹ And the LORD God called unto the man, and said unto him: 'Where art thou?' ¹⁰ And he said: 'I heard Thy voice in the garden, and I was afraid, because I was naked; and I hid myself.'

¹² Even the darkness is not too dark for Thee, but the night shineth as the day; the darkness is even as the light.

¹⁵ And the kings of the earth, and the princes, and the chief captains, and the rich, and the strong, and every bondman and freeman, hid themselves in the caves and in the rocks of the mountains, ¹⁶ and they say to the mountains and to the rocks, Fall on us, and hide us from the face of him that sitteth on the throne, and from the wrath of the Lamb:

³⁴ Let Him take His rod away from me, and let not His terror make me afraid;

²⁰ Are not my days few? Cease then, and let me alone, that I may take comfort a little,

¹¹ Shall not His majesty terrify you, and His dread fall upon you?

¹⁵ Wilt thou keep the old way which wicked men have trodden? ¹⁶ Who were snatched away before their time, whose foundation was poured out as a stream; ¹⁷ Who said unto God: 'Depart from us'; and what could the Almighty do unto them?

⁷ Behold, my terror shall not make thee afraid, neither shall my pressure be heavy upon thee.

¹⁰ (39:11) Remove Thy stroke from off me; I am consumed by the blow of Thy hand.

¹⁶ If I had called, and He had answered me; yet would I not believe that He would hearken unto my voice -

³² For He is not a man, as I am, that I should answer Him, that we should come together in judgment.

¹⁵ Thou wouldest call, and I would answer Thee; Thou wouldest have a desire to the work of Thy hands.

³ Gird up now thy loins like a man; for I will demand of thee, and declare thou unto Me.

⁵ Is not thy wickedness great? And are not thine iniquities without end?

⁸ And if they be bound in fetters, and be holden in cords of affliction; ⁹ Then He declareth unto them their work, and their transgressions, that they have behaved themselves proudly.

²⁰ (44:21) If we had forgotten the name of our God, or spread forth our hands to a strange god; ²¹ (44:22) Would not God search this out? For He knoweth the secrets of the heart.

²⁰ And He said: 'I will hide My face from them, I will see what their end shall be; for they are a very froward generation, children in whom is no faithfulness.

¹⁶ And Samuel said: 'Wherefore then dost thou ask of me, seeing the LORD is departed from thee, and is become thine adversary?

² I will say unto God: Do not condemn me; make me know wherefore Thou contendest with me.

⁹ He hath torn me in His wrath, and hated me; He hath gnashed upon me with His teeth; mine adversary sharpeneth his eyes upon me.

¹¹ He hath also kindled His wrath against me, and He counteth me unto Him as one of His adversaries.

² Oh that I were as in the months of old, as in the days when God watched over me; ³ When His lamp shined above my head, and by His light I walked through darkness;

²¹ Thou art turned to be cruel to me; with the might of Thy hand Thou hatest me.

¹⁰ Behold, He findeth occasions against me, He counteth me for His enemy;

¹ Why standest Thou afar off, O LORD? Why hidest Thou Thyself in times of trouble?

¹ (13:1) For the Leader. A Psalm of David. (13:2) How long, O LORD, wilt Thou forget me for ever? How long wilt Thou hide Thy face from me?

²⁴ (44:25) Wherefore hidest Thou Thy face, and forgettest our affliction and our oppression?

⁶ (77:7) In the night I will call to remembrance my song; I will commune with mine own heart; and my spirit maketh diligent search: ⁷ (77:8) 'Will the Lord cast off for ever? and will He be favourable no more? ⁸ (77:9) Is His mercy clean gone for ever? Is His promise come to an end for evermore? ⁹ (77:10) Hath God forgotten to be gracious? Hath He in anger shut up his compassions?' Selah

¹⁴ (88:15) LORD, why castest Thou off my soul? Why hidest Thou Thy face from me?

¹⁷ And I will wait for the LORD, that hideth His face from the house of Jacob, and I will look for Him.

⁵ The Lord is become as an enemy, He hath swallowed up Israel; He hath swallowed up all her palaces, He hath destroyed his strongholds; and He hath multiplied in the daughter of Judah mourning and moaning.

¹⁵ And yet count him not as an enemy, but admonish him as a brother.

³⁶ And as for them that are left of you, I will send a faintness into their heart in the lands of their enemies; and the sound of a driven leaf shall chase them; and they shall flee, as one fleeth from the sword; and they shall fall when none pursueth.

¹⁴ (24:15) After whom is the king of Israel come out? after whom dost thou pursue? after a dead dog, after a flea.

³ And dost Thou open Thine eyes upon such a one, and bringest me into judgment with Thee?

¹⁸ That they are as stubble before the wind, and as chaff that the storm stealeth away?

¹³ The nations shall rush like the rushing of many waters; but He shall rebuke them, and they shall flee far off, and shall be chased as the chaff of the mountains before the wind, and like the whirling dust before the storm.

²⁰ A bruised reed shall he not break, And smoking flax shall he not quench, Till he send forth judgment unto victory.

²⁰ And she said unto them: 'Call me not Naomi, call me Marah; for the Almighty hath dealt very bitterly with me.

²⁰ Wherewith is light given to him that is in misery, and life unto the bitter in soul -

¹¹ His bones are full of his youth, but it shall lie down with him in the dust.

⁷ Remember not the sins of my youth, nor my transgressions; according to Thy mercy remember Thou me, for Thy goodness' sake, O LORD.

³ (88:4) For my soul is sated with troubles, and my life draweth nigh unto the grave. ⁴ (88:5) I am counted with them that go down into the pit; I am become as a man that hath no help; ⁵ (88:6) Set apart among the dead, like the slain that lie in the grave, whom Thou rememberest no more; and they are cut off from Thy hand. ⁶ (88:7) Thou hast laid me in the nethermost pit, in dark places, in the deeps. ⁷ (88:8) Thy wrath lieth hard upon me, and all Thy waves Thou pressest down. Selah ⁸ (88:9) Thou hast put mine acquaintance far from me; Thou hast made me an abomination unto them; I am shut up, and I cannot come forth. ⁹ (88:10) Mine eye languisheth by reason of affliction; I have called upon Thee, O LORD, every day, I have spread forth my hands unto Thee. ¹⁰ (88:11) Wilt Thou work wonders for the dead? Or shall the shades arise and give Thee thanks? Selah ¹¹ (88:12) Shall Thy mercy be declared in the grave? or Thy faithfulness in destruction? ¹² (88:13) Shall Thy wonders be known in the dark? and Thy righteousness in the land of forgetfulness? ¹³ (88:14) But as for me, unto Thee, O LORD, do I cry, and in the morning doth my prayer come to meet Thee. ¹⁴ (88:15) LORD, why castest Thou off my soul? Why hidest Thou Thy face from me? ¹⁵ (88:16) I am afflicted and at the point of death from my youth up; I have borne Thy terrors, I am distracted. ¹⁶ (88:17) Thy fierce wrath is gone over me; Thy terrors have cut me off. ¹⁷ (88:18) They came round about me like water all the day; they compassed me about together. ¹⁸ (88:19) Friend and companion hast Thou put far from me, and mine acquaintance into darkness.

¹¹ And thou moan, when thine end cometh, when thy flesh and thy body are consumed, ¹² And say: 'How have I hated instruction, and my heart despised reproof; ¹³ Neither have I hearkened to the voice of my teachers, nor inclined mine ear to them that instructed me!

¹⁹ Surely after that I was turned, I repented, and after that I was instructed, I smote upon my thigh; I was ashamed, yea, even confounded, because I did bear the reproach of my youth.'

⁵ And a certain man was there, who had been thirty and eight years in his infirmity.

¹⁴ Afterward Jesus findeth him in the temple, and said unto him, Behold, thou art made whole; sin no more, lest a worse thing befall thee.

¹⁰ Then Asa was wroth with the seer, and put him in the prison-house; for he was in a rage with him because of this thing. And Asa oppressed some of the people the same time. ¹¹ And, behold, the acts of Asa, first and last, lo, they are written in the book of the kings of Judah and Israel. ¹² And in the thirty and ninth year of his reign Asa was diseased in his feet; his disease was exceeding great; yet in his disease he sought not to the LORD, but to the physicians.

⁷ So Satan went forth from the presence of the LORD, and smote Job with sore boils from the sole of his foot even unto his crown.

⁶ That Thou inquirest after mine iniquity, and searchest after my sin,

¹⁶ But now Thou numberest my steps, Thou dost not even wait for my sin;

¹¹ He putteth my feet in the stocks, He marketh all my paths.'

²² He goeth after her straightway, as an ox that goeth to the slaughter, or as one in fetters to the correction of the fool;

²⁴ who, having received such a charge, cast them into the inner prison, and made their feet fast in the stocks.

¹² Let her not, I pray, be as one dead, of whom the flesh is half consumed when he cometh out of his mother's womb.'

¹⁷ In the night my bones are pierced, and fall from me, and my sinews take no rest. ¹⁸ By the great force of my disease is my garment disfigured; it bindeth me about as the collar of my coat. ¹⁹ He hath cast me into the mire, and I am become like dust and ashes.

²⁹ I am become a brother to jackals, and a companion to ostriches. ³⁰ My skin is black, and falleth from me, and my bones are burned with heat.

¹¹ (39:12) With rebukes dost Thou chasten man for iniquity, and like a moth Thou makest his beauty to consume away; surely every man is vanity. Selah

¹² Therefore am I unto Ephraim as a moth, and to the house of Judah as rottenness.
