And he that is born of a woman, that he should be righteous? ¹⁵ Behold, He putteth no trust in His holy ones; yea, the heavens are not clean in His sight. ¹⁶ How much less one that is abominable and impure, man who drinketh iniquity like water! ¹⁷ I will tell thee, hear thou me; and that which I have seen I will declare - ¹⁸ Which wise men have told from their fathers, and have not hid it; ¹⁹ Unto whom alone the land was given, and no stranger passed among them. ²⁰ The wicked man travaileth with pain all his days, even the number of years that are laid up for the oppressor. ²¹ A sound of terrors is in his ears: in prosperity the destroyer shall come upon him. ²² He believeth not that he shall return out of darkness, and he is waited for of the sword. ²³ He wandereth abroad for bread: 'Where is it?' He knoweth that the day of darkness is ready at his hand. ²⁴ Distress and anguish overwhelm him; they prevail against him, as a king ready to the battle. ²⁵ Because he hath stretched out his hand against God, and behaveth himself proudly against the Almighty; ²⁶ He runneth upon him with a stiff neck, with the thick bosses of his bucklers. ²⁷ Because he hath covered his face with his fatness, and made collops of fat on his loins; ²⁸ And he hath dwelt in desolate cities, in houses which no man would inhabit, which were ready to become heaps. ²⁹ He shall not be rich, neither shall his substance continue, neither shall their produce bend to the earth. ³⁰ He shall not depart out of darkness; the flame shall dry up his branches, and by the breath of His mouth shall he go away. ³¹ Let him not trust in vanity, deceiving himself; for vanity shall be his recompense. ³² It shall be accomplished before his time, and his branch shall not be leafy. ³³ He shall shake off his unripe grape as the vine, and shall cast off his flower as the olive. ³⁴ For the company of the godless shall be desolate, and fire shall consume the tents of bribery. ³⁵ They conceive mischief, and bring forth iniquity, and their belly prepareth deceit.

¹¹ Now when Job's three friends heard of all this evil that was come upon him, they came every one from his own place, Eliphaz the Temanite, and Bildad the Shuhite, and Zophar the Naamathite; and they made an appointment together to come to bemoan him and to comfort him.

⁷ And it was so, that after the LORD had spoken these words unto Job, the LORD said to Eliphaz the Temanite: 'My wrath is kindled against thee, and against thy two friends; for ye have not spoken of Me the thing that is right, as My servant Job hath.

⁹ So Eliphaz the Temanite and Bildad the Shuhite and Zophar the Naamathite went, and did according as the LORD commanded them; and the LORD accepted Job.

²⁶ Do ye hold words to be an argument, but the speeches of one that is desperate to be wind?

² How long wilt thou speak these things, seeing that the words of thy mouth are as a mighty wind?

² Should not the multitude of words be answered? And should a man full of talk be accounted right? ³ Thy boastings have made men hold their peace, and thou hast mocked, with none to make thee ashamed;

² What ye know, do I know also; I am not inferior unto you.

¹ (12:2) Ephraim striveth after wind, and followeth after the east wind; all the day he multiplieth lies and desolation; and they make a covenant with Assyria, and oil is carried into Egypt.

¹³ Who is wise and understanding among you? let him show by his good life his works in meekness of wisdom.

⁴ But ye are plasterers of lies, ye are all physicians of no value. ⁵ Oh that ye would altogether hold your peace! and it would be your wisdom.

² I have heard many such things; sorry comforters are ye all. ³ Shall windy words have an end? Or what provoketh thee that thou answerest?

¹ Then Job answered and said: ² How hast thou helped him that is without power! How hast thou saved the arm that hath no strength! ³ How hast thou counselled him that hath no wisdom, and plentifully declared sound knowledge!

¹³ Your words have been all too strong against Me, saith the LORD. Yet ye say: 'Wherein have we spoken against thee?' ¹⁴ Ye have said: 'It is vain to serve God; and what profit is it that we have kept His charge, and that we have walked mournfully because of the LORD of hosts? ¹⁵ And now we call the proud happy; yea, they that work wickedness are built up; yea, they try God, and are delivered.'

³⁶ And I say unto you, that every idle word that men shall speak, they shall give account thereof in the day of judgment. ³⁷ For by thy words thou shalt be justified, and by thy words thou shalt be condemned.

⁶ Let your speech be always with grace, seasoned with salt, that ye may know how ye ought to answer each one.

⁴ he is puffed up, knowing nothing, but doting about questionings and disputes of words, whereof cometh envy, strife, railings, evil surmisings, ⁵ wranglings of men corrupted in mind and bereft of the truth, supposing that godliness is a way of gain; from such withdraw thyself.

¹³ So Saul died for his transgression which he committed against the LORD, because of the word of the LORD, which he kept not; and also for that he asked counsel of a ghost, to inquire thereby, ¹⁴ and inquired not of the LORD; therefore He slew him, and turned the kingdom unto David the son of Jesse.

⁵ But now it is come upon thee, and thou art weary; it toucheth thee, and thou art affrighted. ⁶ Is not thy fear of God thy confidence, and thy hope the integrity of thy ways?

⁸ But as for me, I would seek unto God, and unto God would I commit my cause;

¹⁴ To him that is ready to faint kindness is due from his friend, even to him that forsaketh the fear of the Almighty.

¹⁰ Will he have his delight in the Almighty, and call upon God at all times?

¹ (36:1) For the Leader. A Psalm of David the servant of the LORD. (36:2) Transgression speaketh to the wicked, methinks - there is no fear of God before his eyes. ² (36:3) For it flattereth him in his eyes, until his iniquity be found, and he be hated. ³ (36:4) The words of his mouth are iniquity and deceit; he hath left off to be wise, to do good.

¹²⁶ It is time for the LORD to work; they have made void Thy law.

¹⁴ And they have not cried unto Me with their heart, though they wail upon their beds; they assemble themselves for corn and wine, they rebel against Me.

¹⁰ And when a man's uncle shall take him up, even he that burneth him, to bring out the bones out of the house, and shall say unto him that is in the innermost parts of the house: 'Is there yet any with thee?' and he shall say: 'No'; then shall he say: 'Hold thy peace; for we must not make mention of the name of the LORD.'

⁶ Them also that are turned back from following the LORD; and those that have not sought the LORD, nor inquired after Him.

¹ And he spake a parable unto them to the end that one ought always to pray, and not to faint,

³¹ Do we then make the law of none effect through faith? God forbid; nay, we establish the law.

²¹ I do not make void the grace of God; for if righteousness is through the law, then Christ died for nought.

¹³ He taketh the wise in their own craftiness; and the counsel of the wily is carried headlong.

²² It is all one - therefore I say: He destroyeth the innocent and the wicked. ²³ If the scourge slay suddenly, He will mock at the calamity of the guiltless. ²⁴ The earth is given into the hand of the wicked; he covereth the faces of the judges thereof; if it be not He, who then is it?

⁶ The tents of robbers prosper, and they that provoke God are secure, in whatsoever God bringeth into their hand.

¹⁹ Thou hast let loose thy mouth for evil, and thy tongue frameth deceit. ²⁰ Thou sittest and speakest against thy brother; thou slanderest thine own mother's son.

² (52:4) Thy tongue deviseth destruction; like a sharp razor, working deceitfully. ³ (52:5) Thou lovest evil more than good; falsehood rather than speaking righteousness. Selah ⁴ (52:6) Thou lovest all devouring words, the deceitful tongue.

³ (64:4) Who have whet their tongue like a sword, and have aimed their arrow, a poisoned word;

² O LORD, deliver my soul from lying lips, from a deceitful tongue. ³ What shall be given unto thee, and what shall be done more unto thee, thou deceitful tongue?

³ (9:2) And they bend their tongue, their bow of falsehood; and they are grown mighty in the land, but not for truth; for they proceed from evil to evil, and Me they know not, saith the LORD. ⁴ (9:3) Take ye heed every one of his neighbour, and trust ye not in any brother; for every brother acteth subtly, and every neighbour goeth about with slanders. ⁵ (9:4) And they deceive every one his neighbour, and truth they speak not; they have taught their tongue to speak lies, they weary themselves to commit iniquity.

⁸ (9:7) Their tongue is a sharpened arrow, it speaketh deceit; one speaketh peaceably to his neighbour with his mouth, but in his heart he layeth wait for him.

²¹ For from within, out of the heart of men, evil thoughts proceed, adulteries, fornications, murders, ²² thefts, covetings, wickednesses, deceit, lasciviousness, an evil eye, railing, pride, foolishness;

⁴⁵ The good man out of the good treasure of his heart bringeth forth that which is good, and the evil man out of the evil treasure of his heart bringeth forth that which is evil; for out of the abundance of the heart his mouth speaketh.

²⁶ If any man among you thinketh himself to be religious, while he bridleth not his tongue but deceiveth his heart, this man's religion is vain.

⁵ So the tongue also is a little member, and boasteth great things. Behold, how much wood is kindled by how small a fire! ⁶ And the tongue is a fire, the world of iniquity. Thus is the tongue set among our members, that it defileth the whole body, and setteth on fire the wheel of nature, and is set on fire by hell. ⁷ For every kind of beasts and birds, of creeping things and things in the sea, is tamed, and hath been tamed by mankind. ⁸ But the tongue can no man tame, it is an unruly evil, it is full of deadly poison.

²⁰ Though I be righteous, mine own mouth shall condemn me; though I be innocent, He shall prove me perverse.

⁸ Surely thou hast spoken in my hearing, and I have heard the voice of thy words; ⁹ 'I am clean, without transgression, I am innocent, neither is there iniquity in me; ¹⁰ Behold, He findeth occasions against me, He counteth me for His enemy; ¹¹ He putteth my feet in the stocks, He marketh all my paths.' ¹² Behold, I answer thee: In this thou art not right, that God is too great for man;

⁵ For Job hath said: 'I am righteous, and God hath taken away my right; ⁶ Notwithstanding my right I am accounted a liar; my wound is incurable, though I am without transgression.' ⁷ What man is like Job, who drinketh up scorning like water? ⁸ Who goeth in company with the workers of iniquity, and walketh with wicked men. ⁹ For he hath said: 'It profiteth a man nothing that he should be in accord with God.'

² Thinkest thou this to be thy right, or sayest thou: 'I am righteousness before God', ³ That thou inquirest: 'What advantage will it be unto Thee?' And: 'What profit shall I have, more than if I had sinned?'

⁸ Wilt thou even make void My judgment? Wilt thou condemn Me, that thou mayest be justified?

³ Who is this that hideth counsel without knowledge? Therefore have I uttered that which I understood not, things too wonderful for me, which I knew not.

⁸ (64:9) So they make their own tongue a stumbling unto themselves; all that see them shake the head.

³⁷ For by thy words thou shalt be justified, and by thy words thou shalt be condemned.

⁶⁵ Then the high priest rent his garments, saying, He hath spoken blasphemy; what further need have we of witnesses? behold, now ye have heard the blasphemy:

²² He saith unto him, Out of thine own mouth will I judge thee, thou wicked servant. Thou knewest that I am an austere man, taking up that which I laid not down, and reaping that which I did not sow,

¹ And the man knew Eve his wife; and she conceived and bore Cain, and said: 'I have gotten a man with the help of the LORD.'

¹² Is wisdom with aged men, and understanding in length of days? -

¹⁰ With us are both the gray-headed and the very aged men, much older than thy father.

⁴ Where wast thou when I laid the foundations of the earth? Declare, if thou hast the understanding. ⁵ Who determined the measures thereof, if thou knowest? Or who stretched the line upon it? ⁶ Whereupon were the foundations thereof fastened? Or who laid the corner-stone thereof, ⁷ When the morning stars sang together, and all the sons of God shouted for joy? ⁸ Or who shut up the sea with doors, when it broke forth, and issued out of the womb; ⁹ When I made the cloud the garment thereof, and thick darkness a swaddlingband for it, ¹⁰ And prescribed for it My decree, and set bars and doors, ¹¹ And said: 'Thus far shalt thou come, but no further; and here shall thy proud waves be stayed'? ¹² Hast thou commanded the morning since thy days began, and caused the dayspring to know its place; ¹³ That it might take hold of the ends of the earth, and the wicked be shaken out of it? ¹⁴ It is changed as clay under the seal; and they stand as a garment. ¹⁵ But from the wicked their light is withholden, and the high arm is broken. ¹⁶ Hast thou entered into the springs of the sea? Or hast thou walked in the recesses of the deep? ¹⁷ Have the gates of death been revealed unto thee? Or hast thou seen the gates of the shadow of death? ¹⁸ Hast thou surveyed unto the breadths of the earth? Declare, if thou knowest it all. ¹⁹ Where is the way to the dwelling of light, and as for darkness, where is the place thereof; ²⁰ That thou shouldest take it to the bound thereof, and that thou shouldest know the paths to the house thereof? ²¹ Thou knowest it, for thou wast then born, and the number of thy days is great! ²² Hast thou entered the treasuries of the snow, or hast thou seen the treasuries of the hail, ²³ Which I have reserved against the time of trouble, against the day of battle and war? ²⁴ By what way is the light parted, or the east wind scattered upon the earth? ²⁵ Who hath cleft a channel for the waterflood, or a way for the lightning of the thunder; ²⁶ To cause it to rain on a land where no man is, on the wilderness, wherein there is no man; ²⁷ To satisfy the desolate and waste ground, and to cause the bud of the tender herb to spring forth? ²⁸ Hath the rain a father? Or who hath begotten the drops of dew? ²⁹ Out of whose womb came the ice? And the hoar-frost of heaven, who hath gendered it? ³⁰ The waters are congealed like stone, and the face of the deep is frozen. ³¹ Canst thou bind the chains of the Pleiades, or loose the bands of Orion? ³² Canst thou lead forth the Mazzaroth in their season? Or canst thou guide the Bear with her sons? ³³ Knowest thou the ordinances of the heavens? Canst thou establish the dominion thereof in the earth? ³⁴ Canst thou lift up thy voice to the clouds, that abundance of waters may cover thee? ³⁵ Canst thou send forth lightnings, that they may go, and say unto thee: 'Here we are'? ³⁶ Who hath put wisdom in the inward parts? Or who hath given understanding to the mind? ³⁷ Who can number the clouds by wisdom? Or who can pour out the bottles of heaven, ³⁸ When the dust runneth into a mass, and the clods cleave fast together? ³⁹ Wilt thou hunt the prey for the lioness? Or satisfy the appetite of the young lions, ⁴⁰ When they couch in their dens, and abide in the covert to lie in wait? ⁴¹ Who provideth for the raven his prey, when his young ones cry unto God, and wander for lack of food?

² Before the mountains were brought forth, or ever Thou hadst formed the earth and the world, even from everlasting to everlasting, Thou art God.

²² The LORD made me as the beginning of His way, the first of His works of old. ²³ I was set up from everlasting, from the beginning, or ever the earth was. ²⁴ When there were no depths, I was brought forth; when there were no fountains abounding with water. ²⁵ Before the mountains were settled, before the hills was I brought forth;

²⁹ (29:28) The secret things belong unto the LORD our God; but the things that are revealed belong unto us and to our children for ever, that we may do all the words of this law.

⁶ And that He would tell thee the secrets of wisdom, that sound wisdom is manifold! Know therefore that God exacteth of thee less than thine iniquity deserveth.

² No doubt but ye are the people, and wisdom shall die with you.

⁵ Oh that ye would altogether hold your peace! and it would be your wisdom. ⁶ Hear now my reasoning, and hearken to the pleadings of my lips.

⁴ As I was in the days of my youth, when the converse of God was upon my tent;

¹⁴ The counsel of the LORD is with them that fear Him; and His covenant, to make them know it.

³² For the perverse is an abomination to the LORD; but His counsel is with the upright.

¹⁸ For who hath stood in the council of the LORD, that he should perceive and hear His word? Who hath attended to His word, and heard it?

⁷ For the Lord GOD will do nothing, but He revealeth His counsel unto His servants the prophets.

²⁵ At that season Jesus answered and said, I thank thee, O Father, Lord of heaven and earth, that thou didst hide these things from the wise and understanding, and didst reveal them unto babes;

¹¹ And he answered and said unto them, Unto you it is given to know the mysteries of the kingdom of heaven, but to them it is not given.

³⁵ that it might be fulfilled which was spoken through the prophet, saying, I will open my mouth in parables, I will utter things hidden from the foundation of the world.

¹⁵ No longer do I call you servants, for the servant knoweth not what his lord doeth; but I have called you friends, for all things that I heard from my Father, I have made known unto you.

³⁴ For who hath known the mind of the Lord? or who hath been his counselor?

⁹ but as it is written, Things which eye saw not, and ear heard not, And which entered not into the heart of man, Whatsoever things God prepared for them that love him. ¹⁰ But unto us God revealed them through the Spirit; for the Spirit searcheth all things, yea, the deep things of God. ¹¹ For who among men knoweth the things of a man, save the spirit of the man, which is in him? even so the things of God none knoweth, save the Spirit of God.

¹⁶ For who hath known the mind of the Lord, that he should instruct him? But we have the mind of Christ.

³ But I have understanding as well as you; I am not inferior to you; yea, who knoweth not such things as these?

³ How hast thou counselled him that hath no wisdom, and plentifully declared sound knowledge! ⁴ With whose help hast thou uttered words? And whose spirit came forth from thee?

⁷ Ye look at the things that are before your face. If any man trusteth in himself that he is Christ's, let him consider this again with himself, that, even as he is Christ's, so also are we.

⁵ For I reckon that I am not a whit behind the very chiefest apostles.

²¹ I speak by way of disparagement, as though we had been weak. Yet whereinsoever any is bold (I speak in foolishness), I am bold also. ²² Are they Hebrews? so am I. Are they Israelites? so am I. Are they the seed of Abraham? so am I. ²³ Are they ministers of Christ? (I speak as one beside himself) I more, in labors more abundantly, in prisons more abundantly, in stripes above measure, in deaths oft. ²⁴ Of the Jews five times received I forty stripes save one. ²⁵ Thrice was I beaten with rods, once was I stoned, thrice I suffered shipwreck, a night and a day have I been in the deep, ²⁶ in journeyings often, in perils of rivers, in perils of robbers, in perils from my countrymen, in perils from the Gentiles, in perils in the city, in perils in the wilderness, in perils in the sea, in perils among false brethren, ²⁷ in labor and travail, in watchings often, in hunger and thirst, in fastings often, in cold and nakedness. ²⁸ Besides those things that are without, there is that which presseth upon me daily, anxiety for all the churches. ²⁹ Who is weak, and I am not weak? who is caused to stumble, and I burn not? ³⁰ If I must needs glory, I will glory of the things that concern my weakness.

⁷ Remember the days of old, consider the years of many generations; ask thy father, and he will declare unto thee, thine elders, and they will tell thee.

⁸ For inquire, I pray thee, of the former generation, and apply thyself to that which their fathers have searched out - ⁹ For we are but of yesterday, and know nothing, because our days upon earth are a shadow - ¹⁰ Shall not they teach thee, and tell thee, and utter words out of their heart?

²⁰ He removeth the speech of men of trust, and taketh away the sense of the elders.

⁶ And Elihu the son of Barachel the Buzite answered and said: I am young, and ye are very old; wherefore I held back, and durst not declare you mine opinion. ⁷ I said: 'Days should speak, and multitude of years should teach wisdom.'

³¹ The hoary head is a crown of glory, it is found in the way of righteousness.

²⁴ Then Zedekiah the son of Chenaanah came near, and smote Micaiah on the check, and said: 'Which way went the spirit of the LORD from me to speak unto thee?'

⁸ But as for me, I would seek unto God, and unto God would I commit my cause; ⁹ Who doeth great things and unsearchable, marvellous things without number; ¹⁰ Who giveth rain upon the earth, and sendeth waters upon the fields; ¹¹ So that He setteth up on high those that are low, and those that mourn are exalted to safety. ¹² He frustrateth the devices of the crafty, so that their hands can perform nothing substantial. ¹³ He taketh the wise in their own craftiness; and the counsel of the wily is carried headlong. ¹⁴ They meet with darkness in the day-time, and grope at noonday as in the night. ¹⁵ But He saveth from the sword of their mouth, even the needy from the hand of the mighty. ¹⁶ So the poor hath hope, and iniquity stoppeth her mouth. ¹⁷ Behold, happy is the man whom God correcteth; therefore despise not thou the chastening of the Almighty. ¹⁸ For He maketh sore, and bindeth up; He woundeth, and His hands make whole. ¹⁹ He will deliver thee in six troubles; yea, in seven there shall no evil touch thee. ²⁰ In famine He will redeem thee from death; and in war from the power of the sword. ²¹ Thou shalt be hid from the scourge of the tongue; neither shalt thou be afraid of destruction when it cometh. ²² At destruction and famine thou shalt laugh; neither shalt thou be afraid of the beasts of the earth. ²³ For thou shalt be in league with the stones of the field; and the beasts of the field shall be at peace with thee. ²⁴ And thou shalt know that thy tent is in peace; and thou shalt visit thy habitation, and shalt miss nothing. ²⁵ Thou shalt know also that thy seed shall be great, and thine offspring as the grass of the earth. ²⁶ Thou shalt come to thy grave in a ripe age, like as a shock of corn cometh in in its season.

¹³ If thou set thy heart aright, and stretch out thy hands toward Him - ¹⁴ If iniquity be in thy hand, put it far away, and let not unrighteousness dwell in thy tents - ¹⁵ Surely then shalt thou lift up thy face without spot; yea, thou shalt be stedfast, and shalt not fear; ¹⁶ For thou shalt forget thy misery; thou shalt remember it as waters that are passed away; ¹⁷ And thy life shall be clearer than the noonday; though there be darkness, it shall be as the morning. ¹⁸ And thou shalt be secure, because there is hope; yea, thou shalt look about thee, and shalt take thy rest in safety. ¹⁹ Also thou shalt lie down, and none shall make thee afraid; yea, many shall make suit unto thee.

⁸ Dost thou hearken in the council of God? And dost thou restrain wisdom to thyself?

¹⁶ Yea, He hath allured thee out of distress into a broad place, where there is no straitness; and that which is set on thy table is full of fatness;

³ Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of mercies and God of all comfort, ⁴ who comforteth us in all our affliction, that we may be able to comfort them that are in any affliction, through the comfort wherewith we ourselves are comforted of God. ⁵ For as the sufferings of Christ abound unto us, even so our comfort also aboundeth through Christ.

⁶ Nevertheless he that comforteth the lowly, even God, comforted us by the coming of Titus,

¹³ If thou set thy heart aright, and stretch out thy hands toward Him -

² Surely there are mockers with me, and mine eye abideth in their provocation.

¹⁹ Let not them that are wrongfully mine enemies rejoice over me; neither let them wink with the eye that hate me without a cause.

¹³ That winketh with his eyes, that scrapeth with his feet, that pointeth with his fingers;

⁹ Rejoice, O young man, in thy youth; and let thy heart cheer thee in the days of thy youth, and walk in the ways of thy heart, and in the sight of thine eyes; but know thou, that for all these things God will bring thee into judgment.

³ But Peter said, Ananias, why hath Satan filled thy heart, for thee to lie to the Holy Spirit, and for thee to keep back part of the price of the land? ⁴ While it remained, did it not remain thine own? and after it was sold, was it not in thy power? How is it that thou hast conceived this thing in thy heart? thou hast not lied unto men, but unto God.

²² Repent therefore of this thy wickedness, and pray God, if perhaps the thought of thy heart shall be forgiven thee.

¹⁴ but each man is tempted, when he is drawn away by his own lust, and enticed. ¹⁵ Then the lust, when it hath conceived, beareth sin; and the sin, when it is fullgrown, bringeth forth death.

⁴ He is wise in heart, and mighty in strength; who hath hardened himself against Him, and prospered?

³ Is it good unto Thee that Thou shouldest oppress, that Thou shouldest despise the work of Thy hands, and shine upon the counsel of the wicked?

²⁵ Because he hath stretched out his hand against God, and behaveth himself proudly against the Almighty; ²⁶ He runneth upon him with a stiff neck, with the thick bosses of his bucklers. ²⁷ Because he hath covered his face with his fatness, and made collops of fat on his loins;

¹³ (34:14) Keep thy tongue from evil, and thy lips from speaking guile.

¹³ Your words have been all too strong against Me, saith the LORD. Yet ye say: 'Wherein have we spoken against thee?'

⁷ because the mind of the flesh is enmity against God, for it is not subject to the law of God, neither indeed can it be: ⁸ and they that are in the flesh cannot please God.

² For in many things we all stumble. If any stumbleth not in word, the same is a perfect man, able to bridle the whole body also. ³ Behold, we put the horses' bridles into their mouths that they may obey us, we turn about their whole body also. ⁴ Behold, the ships also, though they are so great and are driven by rough winds, are yet turned about by a very small rudder, whither the impulse of the steersman willeth. ⁵ So the tongue also is a little member, and boasteth great things. Behold, how much wood is kindled by how small a fire! ⁶ And the tongue is a fire, the world of iniquity. Thus is the tongue set among our members, that it defileth the whole body, and setteth on fire the wheel of nature, and is set on fire by hell.

⁴⁶ If they sin against Thee - for there is no man that sinneth not - and Thou be angry with them, and deliver them to the enemy, so that they carry them away captive unto the land of the enemy, far off or near;

² Of a truth I know that it is so; and how can man be just with God?

⁴ Who can bring a clean thing out of an unclean? not one.

⁴ How then can man be just with God? Or how can he be clean that is born of a woman? ⁵ Behold, even the moon hath no brightness, and the stars are not pure in His sight; ⁶ How much less man, that is a worm! and the son of man, that is a maggot!

³ They are all corrupt, they are together become impure; there is none that doeth good, no, not one.

⁵ (51:7) Behold, I was brought forth in iniquity, and in sin did my mother conceive me.

⁹ Who can say: 'I have made my heart clean, I am pure from my sin'?

²⁰ For there is not a righteous man upon earth, that doeth good, and sinneth not.

²⁹ Behold, this only have I found, that God made man upright; but they have sought out many inventions.

⁶ That which is born of the flesh is flesh, and that which is born of the Spirit is spirit.

¹⁸ For I know that in me, that is, in my flesh, dwelleth no good thing; for to will is present with me, but {\i how to do that which is good I find not.

²² But the scriptures shut up all things under sin, that the promise by faith in Jesus Christ might be given to them that believe.

² wherein ye once walked according to the course of this world, according to the prince of the power of the air, of the spirit that now worketh in the sons of disobedience, ³ among whom we also all once lived in the lust of our flesh, doing the desires of the flesh and of the mind, and were by nature children of wrath, even as the rest:—

⁸ If we say that we have no sin, we deceive ourselves, and the truth is not in us. ⁹ If we confess our sins, he is faithful and righteous to forgive us our sins, and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness. ¹⁰ If we say that we have not sinned, we make him a liar, and his word is not in us.

¹⁸ Behold, He putteth no trust in His servants, and His angels He chargeth with folly;

¹ Call now; is there any that will answer thee? And to which of the holy ones wilt thou turn?

⁵ Behold, even the moon hath no brightness, and the stars are not pure in His sight;

² Above Him stood the seraphim; each one had six wings: with twain he covered his face and with twain he covered his feet, and with twain he did fly. ³ And one called unto another, and said: Holy, holy, holy, is the LORD of hosts; the whole earth is full of His glory. ⁴ And the posts of the door were moved at the voice of them that called, and the house was filled with smoke. ⁵ Then said I: Woe is me! for I am undone; because I am a man of unclean lips, and I dwell in the midst of a people of unclean lips; for mine eyes have seen the King, the LORD of hosts.

¹⁹ How much more them that dwell in houses of clay, whose foundation is in the dust, who are crushed before the moth!

¹² Though wickedness be sweet in his mouth, though he hide it under his tongue;

⁷ What man is like Job, who drinketh up scorning like water?

⁶ Wherefore I abhor my words, and repent, seeing I am dust and ashes.

¹ For the Leader. A Psalm of David. The fool hath said in his heart: 'There is no God'; they have dealt corruptly, they have done abominably; there is none that doeth good. ² The LORD looked forth from heaven upon the children of men, to see if there were any man of understanding, that did seek after God. ³ They are all corrupt, they are together become impure; there is none that doeth good, no, not one.

³ (53:4) Every one of them is unclean, they are together become impure; there is none that doeth good, no, not one.

²⁸ An ungodly witness mocketh at right; and the mouth of the wicked devoureth iniquity.

²⁸ And even as they refused to have God in their knowledge, God gave them up unto a reprobate mind, to do those things which are not fitting, ²⁹ being filled with all unrighteousness, wickedness, covetousness, maliciousness, full of envy, murder, strife, deceit, malignity, whisperers, ³⁰ backbiters, hateful to God, insolent, haughty, boastful, inventors of evil things, disobedient to parents,

⁹ What then? are we better than they? No, in no wise; for we before laid to the charge both of Jews and Greeks, that they are all under sin, ¹⁰ as it is written, There is none righteous, no, not one, ¹¹ There is none that understandeth, There is none that seeketh after God, ¹² They have all turned aside, they are together become unprofitable, There is none that doeth good, no, not, so much as one: ¹³ Their throat is an open sepulchre, With their tongues they have used deceit; The poison of asps is under their lips: ¹⁴ Whose mouth is full of cursing and bitterness: ¹⁵ Their feet are swift to shed blood, ¹⁶ Destruction and misery are in their ways, ¹⁷ And the way of peace have they not known: ¹⁸ There is no fear of God before their eyes. ¹⁹ Now we know that what things soever the law saith, it speaketh to them that are under the law, that every mouth may be stopped, and all the world may be brought under the judgment of God:

³ For we also once were foolish, disobedient, deceived, serving diverse lusts and pleasures, living in malice and envy, hateful, hating one another.

²⁷ Lo this, we have searched it, so it is; hear it, and know thou it for thy good.

¹ Howbeit, Job, I pray thee, hear my speech, and hearken to all my words.

² Hear my words, ye wise men; and give ear unto me, ye that have knowledge.

² Suffer me a little, and I will tell thee; for there are yet words on God's behalf.

⁸ For inquire, I pray thee, of the former generation, and apply thyself to that which their fathers have searched out -

¹⁸ And even unto old age and hoary hairs, O God, forsake me not; until I have declared Thy strength unto the next generation, Thy might to every one that is to come.

³ That which we have heard and known, and our fathers have told us, ⁴ We will not hide from their children, telling to the generation to come the praises of the LORD, and His strength, and His wondrous works that He hath done. ⁵ For He established a testimony in Jacob, and appointed a law in Israel, which He commanded our fathers, that they should make them known to their children; ⁶ That the generation to come might know them, even the children that should be born; who should arise and tell them to their children,

¹⁹ The living, the living, he shall praise Thee, as I do this day; the father to the children shall make known Thy truth.

²⁵ And unto Eber were born two sons; the name of the one was Peleg; for in his days was the earth divided; and his brother's name was Joktan.

³² These are the families of the sons of Noah, after their generations, in their nations; and of these were the nations divided in the earth after the flood.

⁸ When the Most High gave to the nations their inheritance, when He separated the children of men, He set the borders of the peoples according to the number of the children of Israel.

¹⁷ (4:17) So shall ye know that I am the LORD your God, dwelling in Zion My holy mountain; then shall Jerusalem be holy, and there shall no strangers pass through her any more.

¹ Why are times not laid up by the Almighty? And why do not they that know Him see His days?

¹³ This is the portion of a wicked man with God, and the heritage of oppressors, which they receive from the Almighty.

³ Thou turnest man to contrition; and sayest: 'Return, ye children of men.' ⁴ For a thousand years in Thy sight are but as yesterday when it is past, and as a watch in the night.

¹² So teach us to number our days, that we may get us a heart of wisdom.

³ This is an evil in all that is done under the sun, that there is one event unto all; yea also, the heart of the sons of men is full of evil, and madness is in their heart while they live, and after that they go to the dead.

¹⁹ And I will say to my soul, Soul, thou hast much goods laid up for many years, take thine ease, eat, drink, be merry. ²⁰ But God said unto him, Thou foolish one, this night is thy soul required of thee, and the things which thou hast prepared, whose shall they be? ²¹ So is he that layeth up treasure for himself, and is not rich toward God.

²² For we know that the whole creation groaneth and travaileth in pain together until now.

¹ Come now, ye rich, weep and howl for your miseries that are coming upon you. ² Your riches are corrupted, and your garments are moth-eaten. ³ Your gold and your silver are rusted, and their rust shall be for a testimony against you, and shall eat your flesh as fire. Ye have laid up your treasure in the last days. ⁴ Behold, the hire of the laborers who mowed your fields, which is of you kept back by fraud, crieth out; and the cries of them that reaped have entered into the ears of the Lord of Sabaoth. ⁵ Ye have lived delicately on the earth, and taken your pleasure, ye have nourished your hearts as in a day of slaughter. ⁶ Ye have condemned, ye have killed the righteous one, he doth not resist you.

⁹ And the LORD God called unto the man, and said unto him: 'Where art thou?' ¹⁰ And he said: 'I heard Thy voice in the garden, and I was afraid, because I was naked; and I hid myself.'

³⁶ And as for them that are left of you, I will send a faintness into their heart in the lands of their enemies; and the sound of a driven leaf shall chase them; and they shall flee, as one fleeth from the sword; and they shall fall when none pursueth.

³⁶ And Abigail came to Nabal; and, behold, he held a feast in his house, like the feast of a king; and Nabal's heart was merry within him, for he was very drunken; wherefore she told him nothing, less or more, until the morning light. ³⁷ And it came to pass in the morning, when the wine was gone out of Nabal, that his wife told him these things, and his heart died within him, and he became as a stone. ³⁸ And it came to pass about ten days after, that the LORD smote Nabal, so that he died.

⁶ For the Lord had made the host of the Arameans to hear a noise of chariots, and a noise of horses, even the noise of a great host; and they said one to another: 'Lo, the king of Israel hath hired against us the kings of the Hittites, and the kings of the Egyptians, to come upon us.'

¹³ And it fell on a day when his sons and his daughters were eating and drinking wine in their eldest brother's house, ¹⁴ that there came a messenger unto Job, and said: 'The oxen were plowing, and the asses feeding beside them; ¹⁵ and the Sabeans made a raid, and took them away; yea, they have slain the servants with the edge of the sword; and I only am escaped alone to tell thee.' ¹⁶ While he was yet speaking, there came also another, and said: 'A fire of God is fallen from heaven, and hath burned up the sheep, and the servants, and consumed them; and I only am escaped alone to tell thee.' ¹⁷ While he was yet speaking, there came also another, and said: 'The Chaldeans set themselves in three bands, and fell upon the camels, and have taken them away, yea, and slain the servants with the edge of the sword; and I only am escaped alone to tell thee.' ¹⁸ While he was yet speaking, there came also another, and said: 'Thy sons and thy daughters were eating and drinking wine in their eldest brother's house; ¹⁹ And, behold, there came a great wind from across the wilderness, and smote the four corners of the house, and it fell upon the young people, and they are dead; and I only am escaped alone to tell thee.'

¹¹ Terrors shall overwhelm him on every side, and shall entrap him at his feet.

⁵ That the triumphing of the wicked is short, and the joy of the godless but for a moment? ⁶ Though his excellency mount up to the heavens, and his head reach unto the clouds; ⁷ Yet he shall perish for ever like his own dung; they that have seen him shall say: 'Where is he?'

²² In the fulness of his sufficiency he shall be in straits; the hand of every one that is in misery shall come upon him. ²³ It shall be for the filling of his belly; He shall cast the fierceness of His wrath upon him, and shall cause it to rain upon him into his flesh. ²⁴ If he flee from the iron weapon, the bow of brass shall strike him through. ²⁵ He draweth it forth, and it cometh out of his body; yea, the glittering point cometh out of his gall; terrors are upon him.

²⁰ Terrors overtake him like waters; a tempest stealeth him away in the night.

¹⁸ Surely Thou settest them in slippery places; Thou hurlest them down to utter ruin. ¹⁹ How are they become a desolation in a moment! They are wholly consumed by terrors. ²⁰ As a dream when one awaketh, so, O Lord, when Thou arousest Thyself, Thou wilt despise their semblance.

⁷ (92:8) When the wicked spring up as the grass, and when all the workers of iniquity do flourish; it is that they may be destroyed for ever.

²⁶ I also, in your calamity, will laugh, I will mock when your dread cometh; ²⁷ When your dread cometh as a storm, and your calamity cometh on as a whirlwind; when trouble and distress come upon you.

²¹ And upon a set day Herod arrayed himself in royal apparel, and sat on the throne, and made an oration unto them. ²² And the people shouted, saying, The voice of a god, and not of a man. ²³ And immediately an angel of the Lord smote him, because he gave not glory to God; and he was eaten of worms, and gave up the ghost.

¹⁰ Neither murmur ye, as some of them murmured, and perished by the destroyer.

³ When they are saying, Peace and safety, then sudden destruction cometh upon them, as travail upon a woman with child, and they shall in no wise escape.

¹¹ They have over them as king the angel of the abyss; his name in Hebrew is Abaddon, but in the Greek tongue he hath the name Apollyon.

³³ And while he yet talked with them, behold, the messenger came down unto him; and the king said: 'Behold, this evil is of the LORD; why should I wait for the LORD any longer?'

¹¹ What is my strength, that I should wait? and what is mine end, that I should be patient?

¹⁶ If I had called, and He had answered me; yet would I not believe that He would hearken unto my voice -

²⁹ Be ye afraid of the sword; for wrath bringeth the punishments of the sword, that ye may know there is a judgment.

¹⁴ If his children be multiplied, it is for the sword; and his offspring shall not have bread enough.

²¹ And they shall pass this way that are sore bestead and hungry; and it shall come to pass that, when they shall be hungry, they shall fret themselves, and curse by their king and by their God, and, whether they turn their faces upward, ²² or look unto the earth, behold distress and darkness, the gloom of anguish, and outspread thick darkness.

⁵ And he cast down the pieces of silver into the sanctuary, and departed, and he went away and hanged himself.

¹² When thou tillest the ground, it shall not henceforth yield unto thee her strength; a fugitive and a wanderer shalt thou be in the earth.'

⁵ Yea, the light of the wicked shall be put out, and the spark of his fire shall not shine. ⁶ The light shall be dark in his tent, and his lamp over him shall be put out.

¹² His trouble shall be ravenous, and calamity shall be ready for his fall.

¹⁸ He shall be driven from light into darkness, and chased out of the world.

³ They are gaunt with want and famine; they gnaw the dry ground, in the gloom of wasteness and desolation. ⁴ They pluck salt-wort with wormwood; and the roots of the broom are their food.

¹⁵ (59:16) They wander up and down to devour, and tarry all night if they have not their fill.

¹⁰ Let his children be vagabonds, and beg; and let them seek their bread out of their desolate places.

⁸ For if a man live many years, let him rejoice in them all, and remember the days of darkness, for they shall be many. All that cometh is vanity.

⁶ We have given the hand to Egypt, and to Assyria, to have bread enough;

⁹ We get our bread with the peril of our lives because of the sword of the wilderness.

² A day of darkness and gloominess, a day of clouds and thick darkness, as blackness spread upon the mountains; a great people and a mighty, there hath not been ever the like, neither shall be any more after them, even to the years of many generations.

²⁰ Shall not the day of the LORD be darkness, and not light? Even very dark, and no brightness in it?

¹⁵ That day is a day of wrath, a day of trouble and distress, a day of wasteness and desolation, a day of darkness and gloominess, a day of clouds and thick darkness,

²⁷ but a certain fearful expectation of judgment, and a fierceness of fire which shall devour the adversaries.

³⁷ they were stoned, they were sawn asunder, they were tempted, they were slain with the sword; they went about in sheepskins, in goatskins, being destitute, afflicted, ill-treated ³⁸ (of whom the world was not worthy), wandering in deserts and mountains and caves, and the holes of the earth.

² Oh that my vexation were but weighed, and my calamity laid in the balances altogether! ³ For now it would be heavier than the sand of the seas; therefore are my words broken. ⁴ For the arrows of the Almighty are within me, the poison whereof my spirit drinketh up; the terrors of God do set themselves in array against me.

¹⁴³ Trouble and anguish have overtaken me; yet Thy commandments are my delight.

²⁷ When your dread cometh as a storm, and your calamity cometh on as a whirlwind; when trouble and distress come upon you.

¹¹ So shall thy poverty come as a runner, and thy want as an armed man.

³ I have commanded My consecrated ones, yea, I have called My mighty ones for mine anger, even My proudly exulting ones.

³⁷ And he took with him Peter and the two sons of Zebedee, and began to be sorrowful and sore troubled. ³⁸ Then saith Jesus unto them, My soul is exceeding sorrowful, even unto death; abide ye here, and watch with me.

⁹ tribulation and anguish, upon every soul of man that worketh evil, of the Jew first, and also of the Greek,

² And Pharaoh said: 'Who is the LORD, that I should hearken unto His voice to let Israel go? I know not the LORD, and moreover I will not let Israel go.' ³ And they said: 'The God of the Hebrews hath met with us. Let us go, we pray thee, three days' journey into the wilderness, and sacrifice unto the LORD our God; lest He fall upon us with pestilence, or with the sword.'

¹⁷ As yet exaltest thou thyself against My people, that thou wilt not let them go?

²³ And if in spite of these things ye will not be corrected unto Me, but will walk contrary unto Me;

⁷ And the Philistines were afraid, for they said: 'God is come into the camp.' And they said: 'Woe unto us! for there was not such a thing yesterday and the day before. ⁸ Woe unto us! who shall deliver us out of the hand of these mighty gods? these are the gods that smote the Egyptians with all manner of plagues and in the wilderness. ⁹ Be strong, and quit yourselves like men, O ye Philistines, that ye be not servants unto the Hebrews, as they have been to you; quit yourselves like men, and fight.'

⁶ Wherefore then do ye harden your hearts, as the Egyptians and Pharaoh hardened their hearts? when He had wrought among them, did they not let the people go, and they departed?

⁹ Then He declareth unto them their work, and their transgressions, that they have behaved themselves proudly.

⁹ Or hast thou an arm like God? And canst thou thunder with a voice like Him? ¹⁰ Deck thyself now with majesty and excellency, and array thyself with glory and beauty. ¹¹ Cast abroad the rage of thy wrath; and look upon every one that is proud, and abase him.

⁷ (52:9) 'Lo, this is the man that made not God his stronghold; but trusted in the abundance of his riches, and strengthened himself in his wickedness.'

⁹ They have set their mouth against the heavens, and their tongue walketh through the earth.

¹¹ And they say: 'How doth God know? And is there knowledge in the Most High?'

⁹ Make an uproar, O ye peoples, and ye shall be broken in pieces; and give ear, all ye of far countries; gird yourselves, and ye shall be broken in pieces; gird yourselves, and ye shall be broken in pieces. ¹⁰ Take counsel together, and it shall be brought to nought; speak the word, and it shall not stand; for God is with us.

¹² Wherefore it shall come to pass, that when the Lord hath performed His whole work upon mount Zion and on Jerusalem, I will punish the fruit of the arrogant heart of the king of Assyria, and the glory of his haughty looks. ¹³ For he hath said: by the strength of my hand I have done it, and by my wisdom, for I am prudent; in that I have removed the bounds of the peoples, and have robbed their treasures, and have brought down as one mighty the inhabitants; ¹⁴ And my hand hath found as a nest the riches of the peoples; and as one gathereth eggs that are forsaken, have I gathered all the earth; and there was none that moved the wing, or that opened the mouth, or chirped.

⁴ Fury is not in Me; would that I were as the briers and thorns in flame! I would with one step burn it altogether.

⁴ Who hath wrought and done it? He that called the generations from the beginning. I, the LORD, who am the first, and with the last am the same. ⁵ The isles saw, and feared; the ends of the earth trembled; they drew near, and came. ⁶ They helped every one his neighbour; and every one said to his brother: 'Be of good courage.' ⁷ So the carpenter encouraged the goldsmith, and he that smootheth with the hammer him that smiteth the anvil, saying of the soldering: 'It is good'; and he fastened it with nails, that it should not be moved.

²³ but hast lifted up thyself against the Lord of heaven; and they have brought the vessels of His house before thee, and thou and thy lords, thy consorts and thy concubines, have drunk wine in them; and thou hast praised the gods of silver, and gold, of brass, iron, wood, and stone, which see not, nor hear, nor know; and the God in whose hand thy breath is, and whose are all thy ways, hast thou not glorified;

⁵ And he said, Who art thou, Lord? And the Lord said, I am Jesus whom thou persecutest;

⁸ Judah, thee shall thy brethren praise; thy hand shall be on the neck of thine enemies; thy father's sons shall bow down before thee.

²² And in the time of his distress did he act even more treacherously against the LORD, this same king Ahaz.

¹³ Know ye not what I and my fathers have done unto all the peoples of the lands? Were the gods of the nations of the lands in any wise able to deliver their land out of my hand? ¹⁴ Who was there among all the gods of those nations which my fathers utterly destroyed, that could deliver his people out of my hand, that your God should be able to deliver you out of my hand? ¹⁵ Now therefore let not Hezekiah beguile you, nor persuade you after this manner, neither believe ye him; for no god of any nation or kingdom was able to deliver his people out of my hand, and out of the hand of my fathers; how much less shall your God deliver you out of my hand?' ¹⁶ And his servants spoke yet more against the LORD God, and against His servant Hezekiah. ¹⁷ He wrote also a letter, to taunt the LORD, the God of Israel, and to speak against Him, saying: 'As the gods of the nations of the lands, which have not delivered their people out of my hand, so shall not the God of Hezekiah deliver His people out of my hand.'

¹² I was at ease, and He broke me asunder; yea, He hath taken me by the neck, and dashed me to pieces; He hath also set me up for His mark.

⁴⁰ (18:41) Thou hast also made mine enemies turn their backs unto me, and I did cut off them that hate me.

¹⁵ But Jeshurun waxed fat, and kicked - thou didst wax fat, thou didst grow thick, thou didst become gross - and he forsook God who made him, and contemned the Rock of his salvation.

¹⁰ But as for you all, do ye return, and come now; and I shall not find a wise man among you.

¹⁰ Their gross heart they have shut tight, with their mouth they speak proudly.

⁷ Their eyes stand forth from fatness; they are gone beyond the imaginations of their heart.

³¹ When the anger of God went up against them, and slew of the lustieth among them, and smote down the young men of Israel.

¹⁰ Make the heart of this people fat, and make their ears heavy, and shut their eyes; lest they, seeing with their eyes, and hearing with their ears, and understanding with their heart, return, and be healed.'

²⁸ They are waxen fat, they are become sleek; yea, they overpass in deeds of wickedness; they plead not the cause, the cause of the fatherless, that they might make it to prosper; and the right of the needy do they not judge.

¹⁴ With kings and counsellors of the earth, who built up waste places for themselves;

¹⁵ There shall dwell in his tent that which is none of his; brimstone shall be scattered upon his habitation.

⁸ Woe unto them that join house to house, that lay field to field, till there be no room, and ye be made to dwell alone in the midst of the land! ⁹ In mine ears said the LORD of hosts: of a truth many houses shall be desolate, even great and fair, without inhabitant. ¹⁰ For ten acres of vineyard shall yield one bath, and the seed of a homer shall yield an ephah.

¹¹ (9:10) And I will make Jerusalem heaps, a lair of jackals; and I will make the cities of Judah a desolation, without an inhabitant.

¹⁸ 'Micah the Morashtite prophesied in the days of Hezekiah king of Judah; and he spoke to all the people of Judah, saying: Thus saith the LORD of hosts: Zion shall be plowed as a field, and Jerusalem shall become heaps, and the mountain of the house as the high places of a forest.

³⁷ And Babylon shall become heaps, a dwelling-place for jackals, an astonishment, and a hissing, without inhabitant.

¹² Therefore shall Zion for your sake be plowed as a field, and Jerusalem shall become heaps, and the mountain of the house as the high places of a forest.

¹⁸ Who is a God like unto Thee, that pardoneth the iniquity, and passeth by the transgression of the remnant of His heritage? He retaineth not His anger for ever, because He delighteth in mercy.

²² In the fulness of his sufficiency he shall be in straits; the hand of every one that is in misery shall come upon him. ²³ It shall be for the filling of his belly; He shall cast the fierceness of His wrath upon him, and shall cause it to rain upon him into his flesh. ²⁴ If he flee from the iron weapon, the bow of brass shall strike him through. ²⁵ He draweth it forth, and it cometh out of his body; yea, the glittering point cometh out of his gall; terrors are upon him. ²⁶ All darkness is laid up for his treasures; a fire not blown by man shall consume him; it shall go ill with him that is left in his tent. ²⁷ The heavens shall reveal his iniquity, and the earth shall rise up against him. ²⁸ The increase of his house shall depart, his goods shall flow away in the day of his wrath.

¹⁵ Wilt thou keep the old way which wicked men have trodden? ¹⁶ Who were snatched away before their time, whose foundation was poured out as a stream; ¹⁷ Who said unto God: 'Depart from us'; and what could the Almighty do unto them? ¹⁸ Yet He filled their houses with good things - but the counsel of the wicked is far from me. ¹⁹ The righteous saw it, and were glad, and the innocent laugh them to scorn: ²⁰ 'Surely their substance is cut off, and their abundance the fire hath consumed.'

¹⁶ Though he heap up silver as the dust, and prepare raiment as the clay; ¹⁷ He may prepare it, but the just shall put it on, and the innocent shall divide the silver.

¹⁶ (49:17) Be not thou afraid when one waxeth rich, when the wealth of his house is increased; ¹⁷ (49:18) For when he dieth he shall carry nothing away; his wealth shall not descend after him.

² And he called him, and said unto him, What is this that I hear of thee? render the account of thy stewardship, for thou canst be no longer steward.

¹⁹ Now there was a certain rich man, and he was clothed in purple and fine linen, faring sumptuously every day; ²⁰ and there was a certain beggar named Lazarus, who was laid at his gate, full of sores, ²¹ and desiring to be fed with the crumbs that fell from the rich man's table, yea, even the dogs came and licked his sores. ²² And it came to pass, that the beggar died, and that he was carried away by the angels into Abraham's bosom; and the rich man also died, and was buried.

¹¹ For the sun ariseth with the scorching wind, and withereth the grass; and the flower thereof falleth, and the grace of the fashion of it perisheth; so also shall the rich man fade away in his goings.

¹ Come now, ye rich, weep and howl for your miseries that are coming upon you. ² Your riches are corrupted, and your garments are moth-eaten. ³ Your gold and your silver are rusted, and their rust shall be for a testimony against you, and shall eat your flesh as fire. Ye have laid up your treasure in the last days.

⁹ By the breath of God they perish, and by the blast of His anger are they consumed.

¹⁴ They meet with darkness in the day-time, and grope at noonday as in the night.

²¹ Before I go whence I shall not return, even to the land of darkness and of the shadow of death; ²² A land of thick darkness, as darkness itself; a land of the shadow of death, without any order, and where the light is as darkness.

²² He believeth not that he shall return out of darkness, and he is waited for of the sword.

²⁶ All darkness is laid up for his treasures; a fire not blown by man shall consume him; it shall go ill with him that is left in his tent.

²⁰ 'Surely their substance is cut off, and their abundance the fire hath consumed.'

⁴ But with righteousness shall he judge the poor, and decide with equity for the meek of the land; and he shall smite the land with the rod of his mouth, and with the breath of his lips shall he slay the wicked.

³³ For a hearth is ordered of old; yea, for the king it is prepared, deep and large; the pile thereof is fire and much wood; the breath of the LORD, like a stream of brimstone, doth kindle it.

⁴ Behold, it is cast into the fire for fuel; the fire hath devoured both the ends of it, and the midst of it is singed; is it profitable for any work? ⁵ Behold, when it was whole, it was meet for no work; how much less, when the fire hath devoured it, and it is singed, shall it yet be meet for any work? ⁶ Therefore thus saith the Lord GOD: As the vine-tree among the trees of the forest, which I have given to the fire for fuel, so do I give the inhabitants of Jerusalem. ⁷ And I will set My face against them; out of the fire are they come forth, and the fire shall devour them; and ye shall know that I am the LORD, when I set My face against them.

⁴⁷ (21:3) and say to the forest of the South: Hear the word of the LORD: Thus saith the Lord GOD: Behold, I will kindle a fire in thee, and it shall devour every green tree in thee, and every dry tree, it shall not be quenched, even a flaming flame; and all faces from the south to the north shall be seared thereby. ⁴⁸ (21:4) And all flesh shall see that I the LORD have kindled it; it shall not be quenched.'

¹² but the sons of the kingdom shall be cast forth into the outer darkness; there shall be the weeping and the gnashing of teeth.

¹³ Then the king said to the servants, Bind him hand and foot, take him away and cast him out into the outer darkness, there shall be the weeping and the gnashing of teeth.

⁴¹ Then shall he say also unto them on the left hand, Depart from me, ye cursed, into the eternal fire which is prepared for the devil and his angels;

⁴³ And if thy hand cause thee to stumble, cut it off; it is good for thee to enter into life maimed, rather than having thy two hands to go into hell, into the unquenchable fire, ⁴⁴ where their worm dieth not, and the fire is not quenched. ⁴⁵ And if thy foot cause thee to stumble, cut it off; it is good for thee to enter into life halt, rather than having thy two feet to be cast into hell, into the unquenchable fire, ⁴⁶ where their worm dieth not, and the fire is not quenched. ⁴⁷ And if thine eye cause thee to stumble, cast it out; it is good for thee to enter into the kingdom of God with one eye, rather than having two eyes to be cast into the hell of fire, ⁴⁸ where their worm dieth not, and the fire is not quenched. ⁴⁹ For every one shall be salted with fire, and every sacrifice shall be salted with salt.

⁸ in flaming fire, rendering vengeance to them that know not God, and to them that obey not the gospel of our Lord Jesus: ⁹ who shall suffer punishment, even eternal destruction from the face of the Lord and from the glory of his might,

¹⁷ These are springs without water, clouds driven by a storm, for whom the blackness of darkness hath been reserved for ever.

¹³ Wild waves of the sea, foaming out their own shame, wandering stars, for whom the blackness of darkness hath been reserved forever.

¹⁵ And out of his mouth proceedeth a sharp two-edged sword, that with it he should smite the nations; and he shall rule them with a rod of iron; and he treadeth the winepress of the fierceness of the wrath of God, the Almighty.

⁸ According as I have seen, they that plow iniquity, and sow mischief, reap the same.

¹⁶ With Him is strength and sound wisdom; the deceived and the deceiver are His.

¹⁰ (62:11) Trust not in oppression, and put not vain hope in robbery; if riches increase, set not your heart thereon.

⁸ He that soweth iniquity shall reap vanity; and the rod of his wrath shall fail.

¹⁰ For thou hast forgotten the God of thy salvation, and thou hast not been mindful of the Rock of thy stronghold; therefore thou didst plant plants of pleasantness, and didst set it with slips of a stranger; ¹¹ In the day of thy planting thou didst make it to grow, and in the morning thou didst make thy seed to blossom - a heap of boughs in the day of grief and of desperate pain.

²⁰ He striveth after ashes, a deceived heart hath turned him aside, that he cannot deliver his soul, nor say: 'Is there not a lie in my right hand?'

⁴ None sueth in righteousness, and none pleadeth in truth; they trust in vanity, and speak lies, they conceive mischief, and bring forth iniquity.

⁷ For they sow the wind, and they shall reap the whirlwind; it hath no stalk, the bud that shall yield no meal; if so be it yield, strangers shall swallow it up.

⁸ (2:9) They that regard lying vanities forsake their own mercy.

³ For if a man thinketh himself to be something when he is nothing, he deceiveth himself.

⁷ Be not deceived, God is not mocked; for whatsoever a man soweth, that shall he also reap. ⁸ For he that soweth unto his own flesh shall of the flesh reap corruption, but he that soweth unto the Spirit shall of the Spirit reap eternal life.

⁶ Let no man deceive you with empty words; for because of these things cometh the wrath of God upon the sons of disobedience.

¹⁶ He is green before the sun, and his shoots go forth over his garden. ¹⁷ His roots are wrapped about the heap, he beholdeth the place of stones. ¹⁸ If he be destroyed from his place, then it shall deny him: 'I have not seen thee.' ¹⁹ Behold, this is the joy of his way, and out of the earth shall others spring.

⁷ For there is hope of a tree, if it be cut down, that it will sprout again, and that the tender branch thereof will not cease. ⁸ Though the root thereof wax old in the earth, and the stock thereof die in the ground; ⁹ Yet through the scent of water it will bud, and put forth boughs like a plant.

¹⁶ His roots shall dry up beneath, and above shall his branch wither. ¹⁷ His remembrance shall perish from the earth, and he shall have no name abroad.

¹⁶ Who were snatched away before their time, whose foundation was poured out as a stream;

⁵ (52:7) God will likewise break thee for ever, He will take thee up, and pluck thee out of thy tent, and root thee out of the land of the living. Selah ⁶ (52:8) The righteous also shall see, and fear, and shall laugh at him: ⁷ (52:9) 'Lo, this is the man that made not God his stronghold; but trusted in the abundance of his riches, and strengthened himself in his wickedness.' ⁸ (52:10) But as for me, I am like a leafy olive-tree in the house of God; I trust in the mercy of God for ever and ever.

²³ (55:24) But Thou, O God, wilt bring them down into the nethermost pit; men of blood and deceit shall not live out half their days; but as for me, I will trust in Thee.

¹⁷ Be not overmuch wicked, neither be thou foolish; why shouldest thou die before thy time?

¹¹ When the boughs thereof are withered, they shall be broken off; the women shall come, and set them on fire; for it is a people of no understanding; therefore He that made them will not have compassion upon them, and He that formed them will not be gracious unto them.

⁸ It was planted in a good soil by many waters, that it might bring forth branches, and that it might bear fruit, that it might be a stately vine. ⁹ Say thou: Thus saith the Lord GOD: Shall it prosper? shall he not pull up the roots thereof, and cut off the fruit thereof, that it wither, yea, wither in all its sprouting leaves? neither shall great power or much people be at hand when it is plucked up by the roots thereof. ¹⁰ Yea, behold, being planted, shall it prosper? Shall it not utterly wither, when the east wind toucheth it? In the beds where it grew it shall wither.'

¹⁶ Ephraim is smitten, their root is dried up, they shall bear no fruit; yea, though they bring forth, yet will I slay the beloved fruit of their womb.

⁵ (14:6) I will be as the dew unto Israel; he shall blossom as the lily, and cast forth his roots as Lebanon. ⁶ (14:7) His branches shall spread, and his beauty shall be as the olive-tree, and his fragrance as Lebanon. ⁷ (14:8) They that dwell under his shadow shall again make corn to grow, and shall blossom as the vine; the scent thereof shall be as the wine of Lebanon.

⁶ If a man abide not in me, he is cast forth as a branch, and is withered, and they gather them, and cast them into the fire, and they are burned.

³⁹ Thou shalt plant vineyards and dress them, but thou shalt neither drink of the wine, nor gather the grapes; for the worm shall eat them. ⁴⁰ Thou shalt have olive-trees throughout all thy borders, but thou shalt not anoint thyself with the oil; for thine olives shall drop off.

⁹ The land mourneth and languisheth; Lebanon is ashamed, it withereth; Sharon is like a wilderness; and Bashan and Carmel are clean bare.

¹³ and the stars of the heaven fell unto the earth, as a fig tree casting her unripe figs when she is shaken of a great wind.

³ And his sons walked not in his ways, but turned aside after lucre, and took bribes, and perverted justice.

³ Here I am; witness against me before the LORD, and before His anointed: whose ox have I taken? or whose ass have I taken? or whom have I defrauded? or whom have I oppressed? or of whose hand have I taken a ransom to blind mine eyes therewith? and I will restore it you.'

¹³ So are the paths of all that forget God; and the hope of the godless man shall perish;

²² They that hate thee shall be clothed with shame; and the tent of the wicked shall be no more.

¹⁴ If iniquity be in thy hand, put it far away, and let not unrighteousness dwell in thy tents -

¹ Then answered Zophar the Naamathite, and said:

⁵ Is not thy wickedness great? And are not thine iniquities without end? ⁶ For thou hast taken pledges of thy brother for nought, and stripped the naked of their clothing. ⁷ Thou hast not given water to the weary to drink, and thou hast withholden bread from the hungry. ⁸ And as a mighty man, who hath the earth, and as a man of rank, who dwelleth in it, ⁹ Thou hast sent widows away empty, and the arms of the fatherless have been broken.

⁸ For what is the hope of the godless, though he get him gain, when God taketh away his soul?

¹² Because I delivered the poor that cried, the fatherless also, that had none to help him. ¹³ The blessing of him that was ready to perish came upon me; and I caused the widow's heart to sing for joy. ¹⁴ I put on righteousness, and it clothed itself with me; my justice was as a robe and a diadem. ¹⁵ I was eyes to the blind, and feet was I to the lame. ¹⁶ I was a father to the needy; and the cause of him that I knew not I searched out. ¹⁷ And I broke the jaws of the unrighteous, and plucked the prey out of his teeth.

¹³ But they that are godless in heart lay up anger; they cry not for help when He bindeth them.

¹⁴ The sinners in Zion are afraid; trembling hath seized the ungodly: 'Who among us shall dwell with the devouring fire? Who among us shall dwell with everlasting burnings?' ¹⁵ He that walketh righteously, and speaketh uprightly; he that despiseth the gain of oppressions, that shaketh his hands from holding of bribes, that stoppeth his ears from hearing of blood, and shutteth his eyes from looking upon evil;

¹¹ Therefore, because ye trample upon the poor, and take from him exactions of wheat; ye have built houses of hewn stone, but ye shall not dwell in them, ye have planted pleasant vineyards, but ye shall not drink wine thereof. ¹² For I know how manifold are your transgressions, and how mighty are your sins; ye that afflict the just, that take a ransom, and that turn aside the needy in the gate.

² The godly man is perished out of the earth, and the upright among men is no more; they all lie in wait for blood; they hunt every man his brother with a net.

⁵¹ and shall cut him asunder, and appoint his portion with the hypocrites; there shall be the weeping and the gnashing of teeth.

¹⁴ (7:15) Behold, he travaileth with iniquity; yea, he conceiveth mischief, and bringeth forth falsehood.

⁴ None sueth in righteousness, and none pleadeth in truth; they trust in vanity, and speak lies, they conceive mischief, and bring forth iniquity. ⁵ They hatch basilisks' eggs, and weave the spider's web; he that eateth of their eggs dieth, and that which is crushed breaketh out into a viper.

¹³ Ye have plowed wickedness, ye have reaped iniquity, ye have eaten the fruit of lies; for thou didst trust in thy way, in the multitude of thy mighty men.

¹⁵ Then the lust, when it hath conceived, beareth sin; and the sin, when it is fullgrown, bringeth forth death.
