¹ Then answered Zophar the Naamathite, and said: ² Therefore do my thoughts give answer to me, even by reason of mine agitation that is in me. ³ I have heard the reproof which putteth me to shame, but out of my understanding my spirit answereth me. ⁴ Knowest thou not this of old time, since man was placed upon earth, ⁵ That the triumphing of the wicked is short, and the joy of the godless but for a moment? ⁶ Though his excellency mount up to the heavens, and his head reach unto the clouds; ⁷ Yet he shall perish for ever like his own dung; they that have seen him shall say: 'Where is he?' ⁸ He shall fly away as a dream, and shall not be found; yea, he shall be chased away as a vision of the night. ⁹ The eye which saw him shall see him no more; neither shall his place any more behold him. ¹⁰ His children shall appease the poor, and his hands shall restore his wealth. ¹¹ His bones are full of his youth, but it shall lie down with him in the dust. ¹² Though wickedness be sweet in his mouth, though he hide it under his tongue; ¹³ Though he spare it, and will not let it go, but keep it still within his mouth; ¹⁴ Yet his food in his bowels is turned, it is the gall of asps within him. ¹⁵ He hath swallowed down riches, and he shall vomit them up again; God shall cast them out of his belly. ¹⁶ He shall suck the poison of asps; the viper's tongue shall slay him. ¹⁷ He shall not look upon the rivers, the flowing streams of honey and curd. ¹⁸ That which he laboured for shall he give back, and shall not swallow it down; according to the substance that he hath gotten, he shall not rejoice. ¹⁹ For he hath oppressed and forsaken the poor; he hath violently taken away a house, and he shall not build it up. ²⁰ Because he knew no quietness within him, in his greed he suffered nought to escape, ²¹ There was nothing left that he devoured not - therefore his prosperity shall not endure. ²² In the fulness of his sufficiency he shall be in straits; the hand of every one that is in misery shall come upon him. ²³ It shall be for the filling of his belly; He shall cast the fierceness of His wrath upon him, and shall cause it to rain upon him into his flesh. ²⁴ If he flee from the iron weapon, the bow of brass shall strike him through. ²⁵ He draweth it forth, and it cometh out of his body; yea, the glittering point cometh out of his gall; terrors are upon him. ²⁶ All darkness is laid up for his treasures; a fire not blown by man shall consume him; it shall go ill with him that is left in his tent. ²⁷ The heavens shall reveal his iniquity, and the earth shall rise up against him. ²⁸ The increase of his house shall depart, his goods shall flow away in the day of his wrath. ²⁹ This is the portion of a wicked man from God, and the heritage appointed unto him by God.

¹¹ Now when Job's three friends heard of all this evil that was come upon him, they came every one from his own place, Eliphaz the Temanite, and Bildad the Shuhite, and Zophar the Naamathite; and they made an appointment together to come to bemoan him and to comfort him.

¹ Then answered Zophar the Naamathite, and said:

⁹ So Eliphaz the Temanite and Bildad the Shuhite and Zophar the Naamathite went, and did according as the LORD commanded them; and the LORD accepted Job.

² If one venture a word unto thee, wilt thou be weary? But who can withhold himself from speaking?

¹⁹ Who is he that will contend with me? For then would I hold my peace and die.

³ I have heard the reproof which putteth me to shame, but out of my understanding my spirit answereth me.

¹³ Beware lest ye say: 'We have found wisdom; God may vanquish him, not man!' ¹⁴ For he hath not directed his words against me; neither will I answer him with your speeches. ¹⁵ They are amazed, they answer no more; words are departed from them. ¹⁶ And shall I wait, because they speak not, because they stand still, and answer no more? ¹⁷ I also will answer my part, I also will declare mine opinion. ¹⁸ For I am full of words; the spirit within me constraineth me. ¹⁹ Behold, mine inwards are as wine which hath no vent; like new wine-skins which are ready to burst. ²⁰ I will speak, that I may find relief; I will open my lips and answer.

²² (31:23) As for me, I said in my haste: 'I am cut off from before Thine eyes'; nevertheless Thou heardest the voice of my supplications when I cried unto Thee.

² (39:3) I was dumb with silence; I held my peace, had no comfort; and my pain was held in check. ³ (39:4) My heart waxed hot within me; while I was musing, the fire kindled; then spoke I with my tongue:

¹¹ I said in my haste: 'All men are liars.'

²⁹ He that is slow to anger is of great understanding; but he that is hasty of spirit exalteth folly.

²⁰ Seest thou a man that is hasty in his words? there is more hope for a fool than for him.

⁹ Be not hasty in thy spirit to be angry; for anger resteth in the bosom of fools.

⁹ And if I say: 'I will not make mention of Him, nor speak any more in His name', then there is in my heart as it were a burning fire shut up in my bones, and I weary myself to hold it in, but cannot.

²⁵ And she came in straightway with haste unto the king, and asked, saying, I will that thou forthwith give me on a platter the head of John the Baptist.

² For I bear them witness that they have a zeal for God, but not according to knowledge.

¹⁹ Wherefore, my beloved brethren, let every man be swift to hear, slow to speak, slow to wrath:

³ These ten times have ye reproached me; ye are not ashamed that ye deal harshly with me.

²⁹ Be ye afraid of the sword; for wrath bringeth the punishments of the sword, that ye may know there is a judgment.

² Therefore do my thoughts give answer to me, even by reason of mine agitation that is in me.

¹¹ I will teach you concerning the hand of God; that which is with the Almighty will I not conceal.

³ My words shall utter the uprightness of my heart; and that which my lips know they shall speak sincerely.

³ (49:4) My mouth shall speak wisdom, and the meditation of my heart shall be understanding.

² I will open my mouth with a parable; I will utter dark sayings concerning days of old; ³ That which we have heard and known, and our fathers have told us, ⁴ We will not hide from their children, telling to the generation to come the praises of the LORD, and His strength, and His wondrous works that He hath done. ⁵ For He established a testimony in Jacob, and appointed a law in Israel, which He commanded our fathers, that they should make them known to their children;

²⁸ And God blessed them; and God said unto them: 'Be fruitful, and multiply, and replenish the earth, and subdue it; and have dominion over the fish of the sea, and over the fowl of the air, and over every living thing that creepeth upon the earth.'

¹ And God blessed Noah and his sons, and said unto them: 'Be fruitful and multiply, and replenish the earth. ² And the fear of you and the dread of you shall be upon every beast of the earth, and upon every fowl of the air, and upon all wherewith the ground teemeth, and upon all the fishes of the sea: into your hand are they delivered. ³ Every moving thing that liveth shall be for food for you; as the green herb have I given you all.

⁸ For inquire, I pray thee, of the former generation, and apply thyself to that which their fathers have searched out - ⁹ For we are but of yesterday, and know nothing, because our days upon earth are a shadow -

¹⁰ With us are both the gray-headed and the very aged men, much older than thy father.

⁷ I said: 'Days should speak, and multitude of years should teach wisdom.'

¹⁶ The heavens are the heavens of the LORD; but the earth hath He given to the children of men.

⁹ The enemy said: 'I will pursue, I will overtake, I will divide the spoil; my lust shall be satisfied upon them; I will draw my sword, my hand shall destroy them.' ¹⁰ Thou didst blow with Thy wind, the sea covered them; they sank as lead in the mighty waters.

²¹ And the Philistines laid hold on him, and put out his eyes; and they brought him down to Gaza, and bound him with fetters of brass; and he did grind in the prison-house. ²² Howbeit the hair of his head began to grow again after he was shaven. ²³ And the lords of the Philistines gathered them together to offer a great sacrifice unto Dagon their god, and to rejoice; for they said: 'Our god hath delivered Samson our enemy into our hand.' ²⁴ And when the people saw him, they praised their god; for they said: 'Our god hath delivered into our hand our enemy, and the destroyer of our country, who hath slain many of us.' ²⁵ And it came to pass, when their hearts were merry, that they said: 'Call for Samson, that he may make us sport.' And they called for Samson out of the prison-house; and he made sport before them; and they set him between the pillars. ²⁶ And Samson said unto the lad that held him by the hand: 'Suffer me that I may feel the pillars whereupon the house resteth, that I may lean upon them.' ²⁷ Now the house was full of men and women; and all the lords of the Philistines were there; and there were upon the roof about three thousand men and women, that beheld while Samson made sport. ²⁸ And Samson called unto the LORD, and said: 'O Lord GOD, remember me, I pray Thee, and strengthen me, I pray Thee, only this once, O God, that I may be this once avenged of the Philistines for my two eyes.' ²⁹ And Samson took fast hold of the two middle pillars upon which the house rested, and leaned upon them, the one with his right hand, and the other with his left. ³⁰ And Samson said: 'Let me die with the Philistines.' And he bent with all his might; and the house fell upon the lords, and upon all the people that were therein. So the dead that he slew at his death were more than they that he slew in his life.

¹¹ And Haman recounted unto them the glory of his riches, and the multitude of his children, and everything as to how the king had promoted him, and how he had advanced him above the princes and servants of the king. ¹² Haman said moreover: 'Yea, Esther the queen did let no man come in with the king unto the banquet that she had prepared but myself; and to-morrow also am I invited by her together with the king.

¹⁰ So they hanged Haman on the gallows that he had prepared for Mordecai. Then was the king's wrath assuaged.

³ I have seen the foolish taking root; but suddenly I beheld his habitation cursed.

¹² Whilst it is yet in its greenness, and not cut down, it withereth before any other herb. ¹³ So are the paths of all that forget God; and the hope of the godless man shall perish;

¹⁹ Behold, this is the joy of his way, and out of the earth shall others spring.

²⁹ He shall not be rich, neither shall his substance continue, neither shall their produce bend to the earth. ³⁰ He shall not depart out of darkness; the flame shall dry up his branches, and by the breath of His mouth shall he go away. ³¹ Let him not trust in vanity, deceiving himself; for vanity shall be his recompense. ³² It shall be accomplished before his time, and his branch shall not be leafy. ³³ He shall shake off his unripe grape as the vine, and shall cast off his flower as the olive. ³⁴ For the company of the godless shall be desolate, and fire shall consume the tents of bribery.

⁵ Yea, the light of the wicked shall be put out, and the spark of his fire shall not shine. ⁶ The light shall be dark in his tent, and his lamp over him shall be put out.

⁸ For what is the hope of the godless, though he get him gain, when God taketh away his soul?

¹³ This is the portion of a wicked man with God, and the heritage of oppressors, which they receive from the Almighty. ¹⁴ If his children be multiplied, it is for the sword; and his offspring shall not have bread enough. ¹⁵ Those that remain of him shall be buried by pestilence, and his widows shall make no lamentation. ¹⁶ Though he heap up silver as the dust, and prepare raiment as the clay; ¹⁷ He may prepare it, but the just shall put it on, and the innocent shall divide the silver. ¹⁸ He buildeth his house as a moth, and as a booth which the keeper maketh. ¹⁹ He lieth down rich, but there shall be not to gather; he openeth his eyes, and his wealth is not. ²⁰ Terrors overtake him like waters; a tempest stealeth him away in the night. ²¹ The east wind carrieth him away, and he departeth; and it sweepeth him out of his place. ²² Yea, it hurleth at him, and spareth not; he would fain flee from its power. ²³ Men shall clap their hands at him, and shall hiss him out of his place.

³⁵ I have seen the wicked in great power, and spreading himself like a leafy tree in its native soil. ³⁶ But one passed by, and, lo, he was not; yea, I sought him, but he could not be found.

¹⁸ Surely Thou settest them in slippery places; Thou hurlest them down to utter ruin. ¹⁹ How are they become a desolation in a moment! They are wholly consumed by terrors. ²⁰ As a dream when one awaketh, so, O Lord, when Thou arousest Thyself, Thou wilt despise their semblance.

²¹ Not every one that saith unto me, Lord, Lord, shall enter into the kingdom of heaven, but he that doeth the will of my Father who is in heaven.

²⁰ And he that was sown upon the rocky places, this is he that heareth the word, and straightway with joy receiveth it, ²¹ yet hath he not root in himself, but endureth for a while, and when tribulation or persecution ariseth because of the word, straightway he stumbleth.

²² And the people shouted, saying, The voice of a god, and not of a man. ²³ And immediately an angel of the Lord smote him, because he gave not glory to God; and he was eaten of worms, and gave up the ghost.

⁴ But let each man prove his own work, and then shall he have his glorying in regard of himself alone, and not of his neighbor.

¹⁶ But now ye glory in your vauntings; all such glorying is evil.

⁴ And they said: 'Come, let us build us a city, and a tower, with its top in heaven, and let us make us a name; lest we be scattered abroad upon the face of the whole earth.'

¹³ And thou saidst in thy heart: 'I will ascend into heaven, above the stars of God will I exalt my throne, and I will sit upon the mount of meeting, in the uttermost parts of the north; ¹⁴ I will ascend above the heights of the clouds; I will be like the Most High.'

¹¹ (4:8) The tree grew, and was strong, and the height thereof reached unto heaven, and the sight thereof to the end of all the earth.

²² (4:19) it is thou, O king, that art grown and become strong; for thy greatness is grown, and reacheth unto heaven, and thy dominion to the end of the earth.

² Though they dig into the nether-world, thence shall My hand take them; and though they climb up to heaven, thence will I bring them down.

³ The pride of thy heart hath beguiled thee, O thou that dwellest in the clefts of the rock, thy habitation on high; that sayest in thy heart: 'Who shall bring me down to the ground?' ⁴ Though thou make thy nest as high as the eagle, and though thou set it among the stars, I will bring thee down from thence, saith the LORD.

²³ And thou, Capernaum, which art exalted unto heaven, shalt be brought down unto Hades; for if the mighty works had been done in Sodom which were done in thee, they would have remained until this day.

¹⁰ therefore, behold, I will bring evil upon the house of Jeroboam, and will cut off from Jeroboam every man-child, and him that is shut up and him that is left at large in Israel, and will utterly sweep away the house of Jeroboam, as a man sweepeth away dung, till it be all gone.

³⁷ and the carcass of Jezebel shall be as dung upon the face of the field in the portion of Jezreel; so that they shall not say: This is Jezebel.'

²⁰ Betwixt morning and evening they are shattered; they perish for ever without any regarding it.

¹⁰ He shall return no more to his house, neither shall his place know him any more.

¹⁸ If he be destroyed from his place, then it shall deny him: 'I have not seen thee.'

¹⁰ But man dieth, and lieth low; yea, man perisheth, and where is he?

¹⁰ (83:11) Who were destroyed at En-dor; they became as dung for the earth.

² and they shall spread them before the sun, and the moon, and all the host of heaven, whom they have loved, and whom they have served, and after whom they have walked, and whom they have sought, and whom they have worshipped; they shall not be gathered, nor be buried, they shall be for dung upon the face of the earth.

¹⁸ He shall be driven from light into darkness, and chased out of the world.

¹⁰ (18:11) And He rode upon a cherub, and did fly; yea, He did swoop down upon the wings of the wind.

²⁰ As a dream when one awaketh, so, O Lord, when Thou arousest Thyself, Thou wilt despise their semblance.

⁵ Thou carriest them away as with a flood; they are as a sleep; in the morning they are like grass which groweth up.

⁷ And the multitude of all the nations that war against Ariel, even all that war against her, and the bulwarks about her, and they that distress her, shall be as a dream, a vision of the night. ⁸ And it shall be as when a hungry man dreameth, and, behold, he eateth, but he awaketh, and his soul is empty; or as when a thirsty man dreameth, and, behold, he drinketh, but he awaketh, and, behold, he is faint, and his soul hath appetite - so shall the multitude of all the nations be, that fight against mount Zion.

⁸ The eye of him that seeth me shall behold me no more; while Thine eyes are upon me, I am gone.

⁷ Yet he shall perish for ever like his own dung; they that have seen him shall say: 'Where is he?'

³ All the while my breath is in me, and the spirit of God is in my nostrils,

¹⁰ And yet a little while, and the wicked is no more; yea, thou shalt look well at his place, and he is not.

³⁶ But one passed by, and, lo, he was not; yea, I sought him, but he could not be found.

¹⁵ As for man, his days are as grass; as a flower of the field, so he flourisheth. ¹⁶ For the wind passeth over it, and it is gone; and the place thereof knoweth it no more.

² For if thou refuse to let them go, and wilt hold them still,

³⁶ And the LORD gave the people favour in the sight of the Egyptians, so that they let them have what they asked. And they despoiled the Egyptians.

¹ (21:37) If a man steal an ox, or a sheep, and kill it, or sell it, he shall pay five oxen for an ox, and four sheep for a sheep.

¹⁰ Let his children be vagabonds, and beg; and let them seek their bread out of their desolate places.

³¹ But if he be found, he must restore sevenfold, he must give all the substance of his house.

³ A poor man that oppresseth the weak is like a sweeping rain which leaveth no food.

⁸ And Zacchaeus stood, and said unto the Lord, Behold, Lord, the half of my goods I give to the poor, and if I have wrongfully exacted aught of any man, I restore fourfold.

²⁶ That Thou shouldest write bitter things against me, and make me to inherit the iniquities of my youth.

²⁰ My bone cleaveth to my skin and to my flesh, and I am escaped with the skin of my teeth.

²⁶ They lie down alike in the dust, and the worm covereth them.

⁷ Remember not the sins of my youth, nor my transgressions; according to Thy mercy remember Thou me, for Thy goodness' sake, O LORD.

¹¹ And thou moan, when thine end cometh, when thy flesh and thy body are consumed, ¹² And say: 'How have I hated instruction, and my heart despised reproof; ¹³ Neither have I hearkened to the voice of my teachers, nor inclined mine ear to them that instructed me!

²² His own iniquities shall ensnare the wicked, and he shall be holden with the cords of his sin. ²³ He shall die for lack of instruction; and in the greatness of his folly he shall reel.

³² The wicked is thrust down in his misfortune; but the righteous, even when he is brought to death, hath hope.

¹³ Because of thy filthy lewdness, because I have purged thee and thou wast not purged, thou shalt not be purged from thy filthiness any more, till I have satisfied My fury upon thee.

²⁷ And they that are inferior to the uncircumcised shall not lie with the mighty that are gone down to the nether-world with their weapons of war, whose swords are laid under their heads, and whose iniquities are upon their bones; because the terror of the mighty was in the land of the living.

²¹ He said therefore again unto them, I go away, and ye shall seek me, and shall die in your sin; whither I go, ye cannot come.

²⁴ I said therefore unto you, that ye shall die in your sins; for except ye believe that I am he, ye shall die in your sins.

²⁵ to take the portion in this ministry and apostleship from which Judas fell away, that he might go to his own place.

⁶ And when the woman saw that the tree was good for food, and that it was a delight to the eyes, and that the tree was to be desired to make one wise, she took of the fruit thereof, and did eat; and she gave also unto her husband with her, and he did eat.

¹⁶ How much less one that is abominable and impure, man who drinketh iniquity like water!

⁷ His mouth is full of cursing and deceit and oppression; under his tongue is mischief and iniquity.

¹⁷ Yea, he loved cursing, and it came unto him; and he delighted not in blessing, and it is far from him. ¹⁸ He clothed himself also with cursing as with his raiment, and it is come into his inward parts like water, and like oil into his bones.

¹⁷ 'Stolen waters are sweet, and bread eaten in secret is pleasant.' ¹⁸ But he knoweth not that the shades are there; that her guests are in the depths of the nether-world.

¹⁷ Bread of falsehood is sweet to a man; but afterwards his mouth shall be filled with gravel.

⁹ Rejoice, O young man, in thy youth; and let thy heart cheer thee in the days of thy youth, and walk in the ways of thy heart, and in the sight of thine eyes; but know thou, that for all these things God will bring thee into judgment.

¹⁸ And say thou unto the people: Sanctify yourselves against to-morrow, and ye shall eat flesh; for ye have wept in the ears of the LORD, saying: Would that we were given flesh to eat! for it was well with us in Egypt; therefore the LORD will give you flesh, and ye shall eat. ¹⁹ Ye shall not eat one day, nor two days, nor five days, neither ten days, nor twenty days; ²⁰ but a whole month, until it come out at your nostrils, and it be loathsome unto you; because that ye have rejected the LORD who is among you, and have troubled Him with weeping, saying: Why, now, came we forth out of Egypt?'

²⁹ And if thy right eye causeth thee to stumble, pluck it out, and cast it from thee; for it is profitable for thee that one of thy members should perish, and not thy whole body be cast into hell. ³⁰ And if thy right hand causeth thee to stumble, cut it off, and cast it from thee; for it is profitable for thee that one of thy members should perish, and not thy whole body be cast into hell.

⁴³ And if thy hand cause thee to stumble, cut it off; it is good for thee to enter into life maimed, rather than having thy two hands to go into hell, into the unquenchable fire, ⁴⁴ where their worm dieth not, and the fire is not quenched. ⁴⁵ And if thy foot cause thee to stumble, cut it off; it is good for thee to enter into life halt, rather than having thy two feet to be cast into hell, into the unquenchable fire, ⁴⁶ where their worm dieth not, and the fire is not quenched. ⁴⁷ And if thine eye cause thee to stumble, cast it out; it is good for thee to enter into the kingdom of God with one eye, rather than having two eyes to be cast into the hell of fire, ⁴⁸ where their worm dieth not, and the fire is not quenched. ⁴⁹ For every one shall be salted with fire, and every sacrifice shall be salted with salt.

¹³ for if ye live after the flesh, ye must die, but if by the Spirit ye put to death the deeds of the body, ye shall live.

²⁴ The wasting of hunger, and the devouring of the fiery bolt, and bitter destruction; and the teeth of beasts will I send upon them, with the venom of crawling things of the dust.

² And it came to pass at eventide, that David arose from off his bed, and walked upon the roof of the king's house; and from the roof he saw a woman bathing; and the woman was very beautiful to look upon. ³ And David sent and inquired after the woman. And one said: 'Is not this Bath-sheba, the daughter of Eliam, the wife of Uriah the Hittite?' ⁴ And David sent messengers, and took her; and she came in unto him, and he lay with her; for she was purified from her uncleanness; and she returned unto her house. ⁵ And the woman conceived; and she sent and told David, and said: 'I am with child.'

¹⁰ Now therefore, the sword shall never depart from thy house; because thou hast despised Me, and hast taken the wife of Uriah the Hittite to be thy wife. ¹¹ Thus saith the LORD: Behold, I will raise up evil against thee out of thine own house, and I will take thy wives before thine eyes, and give them unto thy neighbour, and he shall lie with thy wives in the sight of this sun.

³ When I kept silence, my bones wore away through my groaning all the day long. ⁴ For day and night Thy hand was heavy upon me; my sap was turned as in the droughts of summer. Selah

¹ (38:1) A Psalm of David, to make memorial. (38:2) O LORD, rebuke me not in Thine anger; neither chasten me in Thy wrath. ² (38:3) For Thine arrows are gone deep into me, and Thy hand is come down upon me. ³ (38:4) There is no soundness in my flesh because of Thine indignation; neither is there any health in my bones because of my sin. ⁴ (38:5) For mine iniquities are gone over my head; as a heavy burden they are too heavy for me. ⁵ (38:6) My wounds are noisome, they fester, because of my foolishness. ⁶ (38:7) I am bent and bowed down greatly; I go mourning all the day. ⁷ (38:8) For my loins are filled with burning; and there is no soundness in my flesh. ⁸ (38:9) I am benumbed and sore crushed; I groan by reason of the moaning of my heart.

⁸ (51:10) Make me to hear joy and gladness; that the bones which Thou hast crushed may rejoice. ⁹ (51:11) Hide Thy face from my sins, and blot out all mine iniquities.

³¹ Therefore shall they eat of the fruit of their own way, and be filled with their own devices.

²⁰ Be not among winebibbers; among gluttonous eaters of flesh; ²¹ For the drunkard and the glutton shall come to poverty; and drowsiness shall clothe a man with rags.

²⁹ Who crieth: 'Woe'? who: 'Alas'? who hath contentions? who hath raving? who hath wounds without cause? who hath redness of eyes? ³⁰ They that tarry long at the wine; they that go to try mixed wine. ³¹ Look not thou upon the wine when it is red, when it giveth its colour in the cup, when it glideth down smoothly; ³² At the last it biteth like a serpent, and stingeth like a basilisk. ³³ Thine eyes shall behold strange things, and thy heart shall utter confused things. ³⁴ Yea, thou shalt be as he that lieth down in the midst of the sea, or as he that lieth upon the top of a mast. ³⁵ 'They have struck me, and I felt it not, they have beaten me, and I knew it not; when shall I awake? I will seek it yet again.'

¹⁹ Thine own wickedness shall correct thee, and thy backslidings shall reprove thee: know therefore and see that it is an evil and a bitter thing, that thou hast forsaken the LORD thy God, neither is My fear in thee, saith the Lord GOD of hosts.

² If ye will not hearken, and if ye will not lay it to heart, to give glory unto My name, saith the LORD of hosts, then will I send the curse upon you, and I will curse your blessings; yea, I curse them, because ye do not lay it to heart.

¹³ Their throat is an open sepulchre, With their tongues they have used deceit; The poison of asps is under their lips:

⁸ The morsel which thou hast eaten shalt thou vomit up, and lose thy sweet words.

³ Then Judas, who betrayed him, when he saw that he was condemned, repented himself, and brought back the thirty pieces of silver to the chief priests and elders, ⁴ saying, I have sinned in that I betrayed innocent blood. But they said, What is that to us? see thou to it.

⁶ The burden of the beasts of the South. Through the land of trouble and anguish, from whence come the lioness and the lion, the viper and flying serpent, they carry their riches upon the shoulders of young asses, and their treasures upon the humps of camels, to a people that shall not profit them.

⁷ But when he saw many of the Pharisees and Sadducees coming to his baptism, he said unto them, Ye offspring of vipers, who warned you to flee from the wrath to come?

³ But when Paul had gathered a bundle of sticks and laid them on the fire, a viper came out by reason of the heat, and fastened on his hand. ⁴ And when the barbarians saw the venomous creature hanging from his hand, they said one to another, No doubt this man is a murderer, whom, though he hath escaped from the sea, yet Justice hath not suffered to live. ⁵ Howbeit he shook off the creature into the fire, and took no harm. ⁶ But they expected that he would have swollen, or fallen down dead suddenly; but when they were long in expectation and beheld nothing amiss came to him, they changed their minds, and said that he was a god.

²³ surely they shall not see the land which I swore unto their fathers, neither shall any of them that despised Me see it.

¹³ He made him ride on the high places of the earth, and he did eat the fruitage of the field; and He made him to suck honey out of the crag, and oil out of the flinty rock; ¹⁴ Curd of kine, and milk of sheep, with fat of lambs, and rams of the breed of Bashan, and he-goats, with the kidney-fat of wheat; and of the blood of the grape thou drankest foaming wine.

²⁹ and honey, and curd, and sheep, and cheese of kine, for David, and for the people that were with him, to eat; for they said: 'The people is hungry, and faint, and thirsty, in the wilderness.'

² Then the captain on whose hand the king leaned answered the man of God, and said: 'Behold, if the LORD should make windows in heaven, might this thing be?' And he said: 'Behold, thou shalt see it with thine eyes, but shalt not eat thereof.'

⁶ When my steps were washed with butter, and the rock poured me out rivers of oil!

⁸ (36:9) They are abundantly satisfied with the fatness of Thy house; and Thou makest them drink of the river of Thy pleasures. ⁹ (36:10) For with Thee is the fountain of life; in Thy light do we see light.

¹⁶ (81:17) They should also be fed with the fat of wheat; and with honey out of the rock would I satisfy thee.'

¹⁵ Curd and honey shall he eat, when he knoweth to refuse the evil, and choose the good.

²² and it shall come to pass, for the abundance of milk that they shall give, he shall eat curd; for curd and honey shall every one eat that is left in the midst of the land.

¹⁷ The poor and needy seek water and there is none, and their tongue faileth for thirst; I the LORD will answer them, I the God of Israel will not forsake them.

⁶ For he shall be like a tamarisk in the desert, and shall not see when good cometh; but shall inhabit the parched places in the wilderness, a salt land and not inhabited. ⁷ Blessed is the man that trusteth in the LORD, and whose trust the LORD is. ⁸ For he shall be as a tree planted by the waters, and that spreadeth out its roots by the river, and shall not see when heat cometh, but its foliage shall be luxuriant; and shall not be anxious in the year of drought, neither shall cease from yielding fruit.

²⁴ And he cried and said, Father Abraham, have mercy on me, and send Lazarus, that he may dip the tip of his finger in water, and cool my tongue, for I am in anguish in this flame.

¹ And he showed me a pure river of water of life, bright as crystal, proceeding out of the throne of God and of the Lamb,

⁵ That the triumphing of the wicked is short, and the joy of the godless but for a moment?

¹⁰ His children shall appease the poor, and his hands shall restore his wealth.

¹⁵ He hath swallowed down riches, and he shall vomit them up again; God shall cast them out of his belly.

²⁵ If I rejoiced because my wealth was great, and because my hand had gotten much;

²⁹ If I rejoiced at the destruction of him that hated me, or exulted when evil found him -

¹² Let us swallow them up alive as the grave, and whole, as those that go down into the pit;

⁷ The new wine faileth, the vine fadeth; all the merry-hearted do sigh. ⁸ The mirth of tabrets ceaseth, the noise of them that rejoice endeth, the joy of the harp ceaseth. ⁹ They drink not wine with a song; strong drink is bitter to them that drink it. ¹⁰ Broken down is the city of wasteness; every house is shut up, that none may come in. ¹¹ There is a crying in the streets amidst the wine; all joy is darkened, the mirth of the land is gone.

¹⁵ What hath My beloved to do in My house, seeing she hath wrought lewdness with many, and the hallowed flesh is passed from thee? When thou doest evil, then thou rejoicest. ¹⁶ The LORD called thy name a leafy olive-tree, fair with goodly fruit; with the noise of a great tumult He hath kindled fire upon it, and the branches of it are broken.

¹³ Woe unto him that buildeth his house by unrighteousness, and his chambers by injustice; that useth his neighbour's service without wages, and giveth him not his hire;

¹⁷ But thine eyes and thy heart are not but for thy covetousness, and for shedding innocent blood, and for oppression, and for violence, to do it.

³⁴ Nebuchadrezzar the king of Babylon hath devoured me, he hath crushed me, he hath set me down as an empty vessel, he hath swallowed me up like a dragon, he hath filled his maw with my delicacies; he hath washed me clean.

⁴⁴ And I will punish Bel in Babylon, and I will bring forth out of his mouth that which he hath swallowed up, and the nations shall not flow any more unto him; yea, the wall of Babylon shall fall.

¹⁶ All thine enemies have opened their mouth wide against thee; they hiss and gnash the teeth; they say: 'We have swallowed her up; certainly this is the day that we looked for; we have found, we have seen it.'

¹² The time is come, the day draweth near; let not the buyer rejoice, nor the seller mourn; for wrath is upon all the multitude thereof.

⁷ For they sow the wind, and they shall reap the whirlwind; it hath no stalk, the bud that shall yield no meal; if so be it yield, strangers shall swallow it up. ⁸ Israel is swallowed up; now are they become among the nations as a vessel wherein is no value.

¹ Rejoice not, O Israel, unto exultation, like the peoples, for thou hast gone astray from thy God, thou hast loved a harlot's hire upon every corn-floor.

⁴ Hear this, O ye that would swallow the needy, and destroy the poor of the land,

¹³ But woe unto you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! for ye devour widows' houses, even while for a pretence ye make long prayers; therefore ye shall receive greater condemnation.

²⁴ Ye blind guides, that strain out the gnat, and swallow the camel!

⁸ Draw nigh to God, and he will draw nigh to you. Cleanse your hands, ye sinners, and purify your hearts, ye doubleminded. ⁹ Be afflicted, and mourn, and weep; let your laughter be turned to mourning, and your joy to heaviness.

³³ The fruit of thy land, and all thy labours, shall a nation which thou knowest not eat up; and thou shalt be only oppressed and crushed away:

³ Here I am; witness against me before the LORD, and before His anointed: whose ox have I taken? or whose ass have I taken? or whom have I defrauded? or whom have I oppressed? or of whose hand have I taken a ransom to blind mine eyes therewith? and I will restore it you.' ⁴ And they said: 'Thou hast not defrauded us, nor oppressed us, neither hast thou taken aught of any man's hand.'

¹⁹ And thou shalt speak unto him, saying: Thus saith the LORD: Hast thou killed, and also taken possessions? and thou shalt speak unto him, saying: Thus saith the LORD: In the place where dogs licked the blood of Naboth shall dogs lick thy blood, even thine.'

¹⁵ There shall dwell in his tent that which is none of his; brimstone shall be scattered upon his habitation.

²⁷ Behold, I know your thoughts, and the devices which ye wrongfully imagine against me. ²⁸ For ye say: 'Where is the house of the prince? And where is the tent wherein the wicked dwelt?'

⁶ For thou hast taken pledges of thy brother for nought, and stripped the naked of their clothing.

² There are that remove the landmarks; they violently take away flocks, and feed them. ³ They drive away the ass of the fatherless, they take the widow's ox for a pledge. ⁴ They turn the needy out of the way; the poor of the earth hide themselves together. ⁵ Behold, as wild asses in the wilderness they go forth to their work, seeking diligently for food; the desert yieldeth them bread for their children. ⁶ They cut his provender in the field; and they despoil the vineyard of the wicked. ⁷ They lie all night naked without clothing, and have no covering in the cold. ⁸ They are wet with the showers of the mountains, and embrace the rock for want of a shelter. ⁹ There are that pluck the fatherless from the breast, and take a pledge of the poor; ¹⁰ So that they go about naked without clothing, and being hungry they carry the sheaves; ¹¹ They make oil within the rows of these men; they tread their winepresses, and suffer thirst. ¹² From out of the populous city men groan, and the soul of the wounded crieth out; yet God imputeth it not for unseemliness.

¹³ If I did despise the cause of my man-servant, or of my maid-servant, when they contended with me - ¹⁴ What then shall I do when God riseth up? And when He remembereth, what shall I answer Him? ¹⁵ Did not He that made me in the womb make him? And did not One fashion us in the womb? ¹⁶ If I have withheld aught that the poor desired, or have caused the eyes of the widow to fail; ¹⁷ Or have eaten my morsel myself alone, and the fatherless hath not eaten thereof - ¹⁸ Nay, from my youth he grew up with me as with a father, and I have been her guide from my mother's womb. ¹⁹ If I have seen any wanderer in want of clothing, or that the needy had no covering; ²⁰ If his loins have not blessed me, and if he were not warmed with the fleece of my sheep; ²¹ If I have lifted up my hand against the fatherless, because I saw my help in the gate; ²² Then let my shoulder fall from the shoulder-blade, and mine arm be broken from the bone.

³⁸ If my land cry out against me, and the furrows thereof weep together; ³⁹ If I have eaten the fruits thereof without money, or have caused the tillers thereof to be disappointed -

⁹ By reason of the multitude of oppressions they cry out; they cry for help by reason of the arm of the mighty.

¹⁸ To right the fatherless and the oppressed, that man who is of the earth may be terrible no more.

⁵ (12:6) 'For the oppression of the poor, for the sighing of the needy, now will I arise', saith the LORD; 'I will set him in safety at whom they puff.'

³¹ He that oppresseth the poor blasphemeth his Maker; but he that is gracious unto the needy honoureth Him.

²² Rob not the weak, because he is weak, neither crush the poor in the gate; ²³ For the LORD will plead their cause, and despoil of life those that despoil them.

¹ But I returned and considered all the oppressions that are done under the sun; and behold the tears of such as were oppressed, and they had no comforter; and on the side of their oppressors there was power, but they had no comforter.

⁸ (5:7) If thou seest the oppression of the poor, and the violent perverting of justice and righteousness in the state, marvel not at the matter; for one higher than the high watcheth, and there are higher than they.

⁷ For the vineyard of the LORD of hosts is the house of Israel, and the men of Judah the plant of His delight; and He looked for justice, but behold violence; for righteousness, but behold a cry. ⁸ Woe unto them that join house to house, that lay field to field, till there be no room, and ye be made to dwell alone in the midst of the land!

³⁴ To crush under foot all the prisoners of the earth,

²⁹ The people of the land have used oppression, and exercised robbery, and have wronged the poor and needy, and have oppressed the stranger unlawfully.

¹ Hear this word, ye kine of Bashan, that are in the mountain of Samaria, that oppress the poor, that crush the needy, that say unto their lords: 'Bring, that we may feast.' ² The Lord GOD hath sworn by His holiness: Lo, surely the days shall come upon you, that ye shall be taken away with hooks, and your residue with fish-hooks. ³ And ye shall go out at the breaches, every one straight before her; and ye shall be cast into Harmon, saith the LORD.

² And they covet fields, and seize them; and houses, and take them away; thus they oppress a man and his house, even a man and his heritage.

⁹ The women of My people ye cast out from their pleasant houses; from their young children ye take away My glory for ever.

⁶ But ye have dishonored the poor man. Do not the rich oppress you, and themselves drag you before the judgment-seats?

¹³ For judgment is without mercy to him that hath showed no mercy; mercy glorieth against judgment.

⁴ Behold, the hire of the laborers who mowed your fields, which is of you kept back by fraud, crieth out; and the cries of them that reaped have entered into the ears of the Lord of Sabaoth.

¹³ (5:12) There is a grievous evil which I have seen under the sun, namely, riches kept by the owner thereof to his hurt; ¹⁴ (5:13) and those riches perish by evil adventure; and if he hath begotten a son, there is nothing in his hand.

²⁰ But the wicked are like the troubled sea; for it cannot rest, and its waters cast up mire and dirt. ²¹ There is no peace, saith my God concerning the wicked.

²⁹ He shall not be rich, neither shall his substance continue, neither shall their produce bend to the earth.

¹⁹ He shall have neither son nor son's son among his people, nor any remaining in his dwellings.

¹¹ As the partridge that broodeth over young which she hath not brought forth, so is he that getteth riches, and not by right; in the midst of his days he shall leave them, and at his end he shall be a fool.

²⁴ And he cried and said, Father Abraham, have mercy on me, and send Lazarus, that he may dip the tip of his finger in water, and cool my tongue, for I am in anguish in this flame. ²⁵ But Abraham said, Son, remember that thou in thy lifetime receivedst thy good things, and Lazarus in like manner evil things; but now here he is comforted, and thou art in anguish.

² And the LORD sent against him bands of the Chaldeans, and bands of the Arameans, and bands of the Moabites, and bands of the children of Ammon, and sent them against Judah to destroy it, according to the word of the LORD, which He spoke by the hand of His servants the prophets.

¹⁵ and the Sabeans made a raid, and took them away; yea, they have slain the servants with the edge of the sword; and I only am escaped alone to tell thee.'

¹⁷ While he was yet speaking, there came also another, and said: 'The Chaldeans set themselves in three bands, and fell upon the camels, and have taken them away, yea, and slain the servants with the edge of the sword; and I only am escaped alone to tell thee.'

¹⁷ There the wicked cease from troubling; and there the weary are at rest.

¹¹ God delivereth me to the ungodly, and casteth me into the hands of the wicked.

⁷ The steps of his strength shall be straitened, and his own counsel shall cast him down.

⁵ (39:6) Behold, Thou hast made my days as hand-breadths; and mine age is as nothing before Thee; surely every man at his best estate is altogether vanity. Selah

¹⁸ And I hated all my labour wherein I laboured under the sun, seeing that I must leave it unto the man that shall be after me. ¹⁹ And who knoweth whether he will be a wise man or a fool? yet will he have rule over all my labour wherein I have laboured, and wherein I have shown myself wise under the sun. This also is vanity. ²⁰ Therefore I turned about to cause my heart to despair concerning all the labour wherein I had laboured under the sun.

⁶ I do send him against an ungodly nation, and against the people of My wrath do I give him a charge, to take the spoil, and to take the prey, and to tread them down like the mire of the streets.

⁷ How much soever she glorified herself, and waxed wanton, so much give her of torment and mourning; for she saith in her heart, I sit a queen, and am no widow, and shall in no wise see mourning.

²⁴ Then the LORD caused to rain upon Sodom and upon Gomorrah brimstone and fire from the LORD out of heaven;

²³ And Moses stretched forth his rod toward heaven; and the LORD sent thunder and hail, and fire ran down unto the earth; and the LORD caused to hail upon the land of Egypt.

³³ While the flesh was yet between their teeth, ere it was chewed, the anger of the LORD was kindled against the people, and the LORD smote the people with a very great plague.

⁶ Upon the wicked He will cause to rain coals; fire and brimstone and burning wind shall be the portion of their cup.

³⁰ They were not estranged from their craving, their food was yet in their mouths, ³¹ When the anger of God went up against them, and slew of the lustieth among them, and smote down the young men of Israel.

⁴ My heart is bewildered, terror hath overwhelmed me; the twilight that I longed for hath been turned for me into trembling.

¹⁷ and he reasoned within himself, saying, What shall I do, because I have not where to bestow my fruits? ¹⁸ And he said, This will I do; I will pull down my barns, and build greater, and there will I bestow all my fruits and my goods. ¹⁹ And I will say to my soul, Soul, thou hast much goods laid up for many years, take thine ease, eat, drink, be merry. ²⁰ But God said unto him, Thou foolish one, this night is thy soul required of thee, and the things which thou hast prepared, whose shall they be?

³⁵ Who traineth my hands for war, so that mine arms do bend a bow of brass.

³⁰ But the rest fled to Aphek, into the city; and the wall fell upon twenty and seven thousand men that were left. And Ben-hadad fled, and came into the city, into an inner chamber.

²³ Till an arrow strike through his liver; as a bird hasteneth to the snare - and knoweth not that it is at the cost of his life.

¹⁸ And it shall come to pass, that he who fleeth from the noise of the terror shall fall into the pit; and he that cometh up out of the midst of the pit shall be taken in the trap; for the windows on high are opened, and the foundations of the earth do shake;

⁴³ Terror, and the pit, and the trap, are upon thee, O inhabitant of Moab, saith the LORD. ⁴⁴ He that fleeth from the terror shall fall into the pit; and he that getteth up out of the pit shall be taken in the trap; for I will bring upon her, even upon Moab, the year of their visitation, saith the LORD.

¹⁹ As if a man did flee from a lion, and a bear met him; and went into the house and leaned his hand on the wall, and a serpent bit him.

¹ I saw the Lord standing beside the altar; and He said: Smite the capitals, that the posts may shake; and break them in pieces on the head of all of them; and I will slay the residue of them with the sword; there shall not one of them flee away, and there shall not one of them escape. ² Though they dig into the nether-world, thence shall My hand take them; and though they climb up to heaven, thence will I bring them down. ³ And though they hide themselves in the top of Carmel, I will search and take them out thence; and though they be hid from My sight in the bottom of the sea, thence will I command the serpent, and he shall bite them.

⁴¹ If I whet My glittering sword, and My hand take hold on judgment; I will render vengeance to Mine adversaries, and will recompense them that hate Me.

¹⁴ Then said Joab: 'I may not tarry thus with thee.' And he took three darts in his hand, and thrust them through the heart of Absalom, while he was yet alive in the midst of the terebinth.

⁴ For the arrows of the Almighty are within me, the poison whereof my spirit drinketh up; the terrors of God do set themselves in array against me.

²¹ A sound of terrors is in his ears: in prosperity the destroyer shall come upon him.

¹³ His archers compass me round about, He cleaveth my reins asunder, and doth not spare; He poureth out my gall upon the ground.

¹¹ Terrors shall overwhelm him on every side, and shall entrap him at his feet.

²⁰ Terrors overtake him like waters; a tempest stealeth him away in the night.

¹² (7:13) If a man turn not, He will whet His sword, He hath bent His bow, and made it ready;

¹⁹ How are they become a desolation in a moment! They are wholly consumed by terrors.

¹⁵ (88:16) I am afflicted and at the point of death from my youth up; I have borne Thy terrors, I am distracted.

³ And it came to pass on the morrow, that Pashhur brought forth Jeremiah out of the stocks. Then said Jeremiah unto him: 'The LORD hath not called thy name Pashhur, but Magormissabib. ⁴ For thus saith the LORD: Behold, I will make thee a terror to thyself, and to all thy friends; and they shall fall by the sword of their enemies, and thine eyes shall behold it; and I will give all Judah into the hand of the king of Babylon, and he shall carry them captive to Babylon, and shall slay them with the sword.

¹¹ Knowing therefore the fear of the Lord, we persuade men, but we are made manifest unto God, and I hope that we are made manifest also in your consciences.

¹⁸ He shall be driven from light into darkness, and chased out of the world. ¹⁹ He shall have neither son nor son's son among his people, nor any remaining in his dwellings.

⁹ (21:10) Thou shalt make them as a fiery furnace in the time of thine anger; the LORD shall swallow them up in His wrath, and the fire shall devour them.

⁹ Let his children be fatherless, and his wife a widow. ¹⁰ Let his children be vagabonds, and beg; and let them seek their bread out of their desolate places. ¹¹ Let the creditor distrain all that he hath; and let strangers make spoil of his labour. ¹² Let there be none to extend kindness unto him; neither let there be any to be gracious unto his fatherless children. ¹³ Let his posterity be cut off; in the generation following let their name be blotted out. ¹⁴ Let the iniquity of his fathers be brought to remembrance unto the LORD; and let not the sin of his mother be blotted out. ¹⁵ Let them be before the LORD continually, that He may cut off the memory of them from the earth.

⁴ Sharp arrows of the mighty, with coals of broom.

²² or look unto the earth, behold distress and darkness, the gloom of anguish, and outspread thick darkness.

²⁰ Thou shalt not be joined with them in burial, because thou hast destroyed thy land, thou hast slain thy people; the seed of evil- doers shall not be named for ever. ²¹ Prepare ye slaughter for his children for the iniquity of their fathers; that they rise not up, and possess the earth, and fill the face of the world with cities. ²² And I will rise up against them, saith the LORD of hosts, and cut off from Babylon name and remnant, and offshoot and offspring, saith the LORD.

³³ For a hearth is ordered of old; yea, for the king it is prepared, deep and large; the pile thereof is fire and much wood; the breath of the LORD, like a stream of brimstone, doth kindle it.

¹² whose fan is in his hand, and he will thoroughly cleanse his threshing-floor, and he will gather his wheat into the garner, but the chaff he will burn up with unquenchable fire.

¹² but the sons of the kingdom shall be cast forth into the outer darkness; there shall be the weeping and the gnashing of teeth.

¹³ Wild waves of the sea, foaming out their own shame, wandering stars, for whom the blackness of darkness hath been reserved forever.

²⁸ Assemble unto me all the elders of your tribes, and your officers, that I may speak these words in their ears, and call heaven and earth to witness against them.

¹⁸ O earth, cover not thou my blood, and let my cry have no resting-place.

²⁰ (44:21) If we had forgotten the name of our God, or spread forth our hands to a strange god; ²¹ (44:22) Would not God search this out? For He knoweth the secrets of the heart.

²¹ For, behold, the LORD cometh forth out of His place to visit upon the inhabitants of the earth their iniquity; the earth also shall disclose her blood, and shall no more cover her slain.

²³ because they have wrought vile deeds in Israel, and have committed adultery with their neighbours' wives, and have spoken words in My name falsely, which I commanded them not; but I am He that knoweth, and am witness, saith the LORD.

⁵ And I will come near to you to judgment; and I will be a swift witness against the sorcerers, and against the adulterers, and against false swearers; and against those that oppress the hireling in his wages, the widow, and the fatherless, and that turn aside the stranger from his right, and fear not Me, saith the LORD of hosts.

² But there is nothing covered up, that shall not be revealed, and hid, that shall not be known. ³ Wherefore whatsoever ye have said in the darkness shall be heard in the light, and what ye have spoken in the ear in the inner chambers shall be proclaimed upon the housetops.

¹⁶ in the day when God shall judge the secrets of men, according to my gospel, by Jesus Christ.

⁵ Wherefore judge nothing before the time, until the Lord come, who will both bring to light the hidden things of darkness, and make manifest the counsels of the hearts, and then shall each man have his praise from God.

³¹ Thine ox shall be slain before thine eyes, and thou shalt not eat thereof; thine ass shall be violently taken away from before thy face, and shall not be restored to thee; thy sheep shall be given unto thine enemies; and thou shalt have none to save thee.

¹⁷ Behold, the days come, that all that is in thy house, and that which thy fathers have laid up in store unto this day, shall be carried to Babylon; nothing shall be left, saith the LORD.

⁵ Whose harvest the hungry eateth up, and taketh it even out of the thorns, and the snare gapeth for their substance.

¹⁸ That which he laboured for shall he give back, and shall not swallow it down; according to the substance that he hath gotten, he shall not rejoice. ¹⁹ For he hath oppressed and forsaken the poor; he hath violently taken away a house, and he shall not build it up. ²⁰ Because he knew no quietness within him, in his greed he suffered nought to escape, ²¹ There was nothing left that he devoured not - therefore his prosperity shall not endure. ²² In the fulness of his sufficiency he shall be in straits; the hand of every one that is in misery shall come upon him.

³⁰ That the evil man is reserved to the day of calamity, that they are led forth to the day of wrath?

¹⁴ If his children be multiplied, it is for the sword; and his offspring shall not have bread enough. ¹⁵ Those that remain of him shall be buried by pestilence, and his widows shall make no lamentation. ¹⁶ Though he heap up silver as the dust, and prepare raiment as the clay; ¹⁷ He may prepare it, but the just shall put it on, and the innocent shall divide the silver. ¹⁸ He buildeth his house as a moth, and as a booth which the keeper maketh. ¹⁹ He lieth down rich, but there shall be not to gather; he openeth his eyes, and his wealth is not.

⁴ Riches profit not in the day of wrath; but righteousness delivereth from death.

¹⁸ Neither their silver nor their gold shall be able to deliver them in the day of the LORD'S wrath; but the whole earth shall be devoured by the fire of His jealousy; for He will make and end, yea, a terrible end, of all them that dwell in the earth.

²⁶ For what is a man profited, if he shall gain the whole world, and forfeit his life? or what shall a man give in exchange for his life?

¹ Come now, ye rich, weep and howl for your miseries that are coming upon you. ² Your riches are corrupted, and your garments are moth-eaten. ³ Your gold and your silver are rusted, and their rust shall be for a testimony against you, and shall eat your flesh as fire. Ye have laid up your treasure in the last days.

¹⁷ for in an hour so great riches is made desolate. And every shipmaster, and every one that saileth any wither, and mariners, and as many as gain their living by sea, stood afar off,

²⁰ (29:19) the LORD will not be willing to pardon him, but then the anger of the LORD and His jealousy shall be kindled against that man, and all the curse that is written in this book shall lie upon him, and the LORD shall blot out his name from under heaven; ²¹ (29:20) and the LORD shall separate him unto evil out of all the tribes of Israel, according to all the curses of the covenant that is written in this book of the law. ²² (29:21) And the generation to come, your children that shall rise up after you, and the foreigner that shall come from a far land, shall say, when they see the plagues of that land, and the sicknesses wherewith the LORD hath made it sick; ²³ (29:22) and that the whole land thereof is brimstone, and salt, and a burning, that it is not sown, nor beareth, nor any grass groweth therein, like the overthrow of Sodom and Gomorrah, Admah and Zeboiim, which the LORD overthrew in His anger, and in His wrath; ²⁴ (29:23) even all the nations shall say 'Wherefore hath the LORD done thus unto this land? what meaneth the heat of this great anger?' ²⁵ (29:24) then men shall say: 'Because they forsook the covenant of the LORD, the God of their fathers, which He made with them when He brought them forth out of the land of Egypt; ²⁶ (29:25) and went and served other gods, and worshipped them, gods that they knew not, and that He had not allotted unto them; ²⁷ (29:26) therefore the anger of the LORD was kindled against this land, to bring upon it all the curse that is written in this book; ²⁸ (29:27) and the LORD rooted them out of their land in anger, and in wrath, and in great indignation, and cast them into another land, as it is this day'. -

²¹ Surely such are the dwellings of the wicked, and this is the place of him that knoweth not God.

¹³ This is the portion of a wicked man with God, and the heritage of oppressors, which they receive from the Almighty.

² For what would be the portion of God from above, and the heritage of the Almighty from on high? ³ Is it not calamity to the unrighteous, and disaster to the workers of iniquity?

⁵ The LORD trieth the righteous; but the wicked and him that loveth violence His soul hateth. ⁶ Upon the wicked He will cause to rain coals; fire and brimstone and burning wind shall be the portion of their cup.

³⁸ Out of the mouth of the Most High proceedeth not evil and good?

⁵¹ and shall cut him asunder, and appoint his portion with the hypocrites; there shall be the weeping and the gnashing of teeth.
