¹ I made a covenant with mine eyes; how then should I look upon a maid?

² that the sons of God saw the daughters of men that they were fair; and they took them wives, whomsoever they chose.

² And it came to pass at eventide, that David arose from off his bed, and walked upon the roof of the king's house; and from the roof he saw a woman bathing; and the woman was very beautiful to look upon. ³ And David sent and inquired after the woman. And one said: 'Is not this Bath-sheba, the daughter of Eliam, the wife of Uriah the Hittite?' ⁴ And David sent messengers, and took her; and she came in unto him, and he lay with her; for she was purified from her uncleanness; and she returned unto her house.

³⁷ Turn away mine eyes from beholding vanity, and quicken me in Thy ways.

²⁵ Let thine eyes look right on, and let thine eyelids look straight before thee.

²⁵ Lust not after her beauty in thy heart; neither let her captivate thee with her eyelids.

³¹ Look not thou upon the wine when it is red, when it giveth its colour in the cup, when it glideth down smoothly; ³² At the last it biteth like a serpent, and stingeth like a basilisk. ³³ Thine eyes shall behold strange things, and thy heart shall utter confused things.

²⁸ but I say unto you, that every one that looketh on a woman to lust after her hath committed adultery with her already in his heart. ²⁹ And if thy right eye causeth thee to stumble, pluck it out, and cast it from thee; for it is profitable for thee that one of thy members should perish, and not thy whole body be cast into hell.

¹⁴ but each man is tempted, when he is drawn away by his own lust, and enticed. ¹⁵ Then the lust, when it hath conceived, beareth sin; and the sin, when it is fullgrown, bringeth forth death.

¹⁶ For all that is in the world, the lust of the flesh and the lust of the eyes and the vain glory of life, is not of the Father, but is of the world.
