¹ I am the man that hath seen affliction by the rod of His wrath.

²¹ Have pity upon me, have pity upon me, O ye my friends; for the hand of God hath touched me.

²⁰ Thou, who hast made me to see many and sore troubles, wilt quicken me again, and bring me up again from the depths of the earth.

⁷ (88:8) Thy wrath lieth hard upon me, and all Thy waves Thou pressest down. Selah

¹⁵ (88:16) I am afflicted and at the point of death from my youth up; I have borne Thy terrors, I am distracted. ¹⁶ (88:17) Thy fierce wrath is gone over me; Thy terrors have cut me off.

³ He was despised, and forsaken of men, a man of pains, and acquainted with disease, and as one from whom men hide their face: he was despised, and we esteemed him not.

¹⁷ I sat not in the assembly of them that make merry, nor rejoiced; I sat alone because of Thy hand; for Thou hast filled me with indignation. ¹⁸ Why is my pain perpetual, and my wound incurable, so that it refuseth to be healed? Wilt Thou indeed be unto me as a deceitful brook, as waters that fail?

¹⁴ Cursed be the day wherein I was born; the day wherein my mother bore me, let it not be blessed. ¹⁵ Cursed be the man who brought tidings to my father, saying: 'A man-child is born unto thee'; making him very glad. ¹⁶ And let that man be as the cities which the LORD overthrew, and repented not; and let him hear a cry in the morning, and an alarm at noontide; ¹⁷ Because He slew me not from the womb; and so my mother would have been my grave, and her womb always great. ¹⁸ Wherefore came I forth out of the womb to see labour and sorrow, that my days should be consumed in shame?

⁶ Then took they Jeremiah, and cast him into the pit of Malchiah the king's son, that was in the court of the guard; and they let down Jeremiah with cords. And in the pit there was no water, but mire; and Jeremiah sank in the mire.

¹² 'Let it not come unto you, all ye that pass by! Behold, and see if there be any pain like unto my pain, which is done unto me, wherewith the LORD hath afflicted me in the day of His fierce anger. ¹³ From on high hath He sent fire into my bones, and it prevaileth against them; He hath spread a net for my feet, He hath turned me back; He hath made me desolate and faint all the day. ¹⁴ The yoke of my transgressions is impressed by His hand; they are knit together, they are come up upon my neck; He hath made my strength to fail; the Lord hath delivered me into their hands, against whom I am not able to stand.
