¹ My son, attend unto my wisdom; incline thine ear to my understanding; ² That thou mayest preserve discretion, and that thy lips may keep knowledge. ³ For the lips of a strange woman drop honey, and her mouth is smoother than oil; ⁴ But her end is bitter as wormwood, sharp as a two-edged sword. ⁵ Her feet go down to death; her steps take hold on the nether-world; ⁶ Lest she should walk the even path of life, her ways wander, but she knoweth it not. ⁷ Now therefore, O ye children, hearken unto me, and depart not from the words of my mouth. ⁸ Remove thy way far from her, and come not nigh the door of her house; ⁹ Lest thou give thy vigour unto others, and thy years unto the cruel; ¹⁰ Lest strangers be filled with thy strength, and thy labours be in the house of an alien; ¹¹ And thou moan, when thine end cometh, when thy flesh and thy body are consumed, ¹² And say: 'How have I hated instruction, and my heart despised reproof; ¹³ Neither have I hearkened to the voice of my teachers, nor inclined mine ear to them that instructed me! ¹⁴ I was well nigh in all evil in the midst of the congregation and assembly.' ¹⁵ Drink waters out of thine own cistern, and running waters out of thine own well. ¹⁶ Let thy springs be dispersed abroad, and courses of water in the streets. ¹⁷ Let them be only thine own, and not strangers' with thee. ¹⁸ Let thy fountain be blessed; and have joy of the wife of thy youth. ¹⁹ A lovely hind and a graceful doe, let her breasts satisfy thee at all times; with her love be thou ravished always. ²⁰ Why then wilt thou, my son, be ravished with a strange woman, and embrace the bosom of an alien? ²¹ For the ways of man are before the eyes of the LORD, and He maketh even all his paths. ²² His own iniquities shall ensnare the wicked, and he shall be holden with the cords of his sin. ²³ He shall die for lack of instruction; and in the greatness of his folly he shall reel.

¹ My son, if thou wilt receive my words, and lay up my commandments with thee;

⁶ The law of truth was in his mouth, and unrighteousness was not found in his lips; he walked with Me in peace and uprightness, and did turn many away from iniquity. ⁷ For the priest's lips should keep knowledge, and they should seek the law at his mouth; for he is the messenger of the LORD of hosts.

²¹ (55:22) Smoother than cream were the speeches of his mouth, but his heart was war; his words were softer than oil, yet were they keen-edged swords.

¹⁵ And she said unto him: 'How canst thou say: I love thee, when thy heart is not with me? thou hast mocked me these three times, and hast not told me wherein thy great strength lieth.' ¹⁶ And it came to pass, when she pressed him daily with her words, and urged him, that his soul was vexed unto death. ¹⁷ And he told her all his heart, and said unto her: 'There hath not come a razor upon my head; for I have been a Nazirite unto God from my mother's womb; if I be shaven, then my strength will go from me, and I shall become weak, and be like any other man.' ¹⁸ And when Delilah saw that he had told her all his heart, she sent and called for the lords of the Philistines, saying: 'Come up this once, for he hath told me all his heart.' But he knew not that the LORD was departed from him. ²¹ And the Philistines laid hold on him, and put out his eyes; and they brought him down to Gaza, and bound him with fetters of brass; and he did grind in the prison-house.

⁴ (57:5) My soul is among lions, I do lie down among them that are aflame; even the sons of men, whose teeth are spears and arrows, and their tongue a sharp sword.

²⁴ To keep thee from the evil woman, from the smoothness of the alien tongue. ²⁵ Lust not after her beauty in thy heart; neither let her captivate thee with her eyelids. ²⁶ For on account of a harlot a man is brought to a loaf of bread, but the adulteress hunteth for the precious life. ²⁷ Can a man take fire in his bosom, and his clothes not be burned? ²⁸ Or can one walk upon hot coals, and his feet not be scorched? ²⁹ So he that goeth in to his neighbour's wife; whosoever toucheth her shall not go unpunished. ³⁰ Men do not despise a thief, if he steal to satisfy his soul when he is hungry; ³¹ But if he be found, he must restore sevenfold, he must give all the substance of his house. ³² He that committeth adultery with a woman lacketh understanding; he doeth it that would destroy his own soul. ³³ Wounds and dishonour shall he get, and his reproach shall not be wiped away. ³⁴ For jealousy is the rage of a man, and he will not spare in the day of vengeance. ³⁵ He will not regard any ransom; neither will he rest content, though thou givest many gifts.

²² He goeth after her straightway, as an ox that goeth to the slaughter, or as one in fetters to the correction of the fool; ²³ Till an arrow strike through his liver; as a bird hasteneth to the snare - and knoweth not that it is at the cost of his life.

¹⁸ But he knoweth not that the shades are there; that her guests are in the depths of the nether-world.

²⁷ For a harlot is a deep ditch; and an alien woman is a narrow pit. ²⁸ She also lieth in wait as a robber, and increaseth the faithless among men.

²⁶ and I find more bitter than death the woman, whose heart is snares and nets, and her hands as bands; whoso pleaseth God shall escape from her; but the sinner shall be taken by her.

¹² For the word of God is living, and active, and sharper than any two-edged sword, and piercing even to the dividing of soul and spirit, of both joints and marrow, and quick to discern the thoughts and intents of the heart.

¹⁵ looking carefully lest there be any man that falleth short of the grace of God, lest any root of bitterness springing up trouble you, and thereby the many be defiled, ¹⁶ lest there be any fornicator, or profane person, as Esau, who for one mess of meat sold his birthright.

¹⁸ For her house sinketh down unto death, and her paths unto the shades; ¹⁹ None that go unto her return, neither do they attain unto the paths of life;

²⁷ Her house is the way to the nether-world, going down to the chambers of death.

¹¹ Thou makest me to know the path of life; in Thy presence is fulness of joy, in Thy right hand bliss for evermore.

⁵⁹ I considered my ways, and turned my feet unto Thy testimonies.

²⁶ Make plain the path of thy feet, and let all thy ways be established.

¹² A base person, a man of iniquity, is he that walketh with a froward mouth; ¹³ That winketh with his eyes, that scrapeth with his feet, that pointeth with his fingers;

¹⁰ And, behold, there met him a woman with the attire of a harlot, and wily of heart. ¹¹ She is riotous and rebellious, her feet abide not in her house; ¹² Now she is in the streets, now in the broad places, and lieth in wait at every corner. ¹³ So she caught him, and kissed him, and with an impudent face she said unto him: ¹⁴ 'Sacrifices of peace-offerings were due from me; this day have I paid my vows. ¹⁵ Therefore came I forth to meet thee, to seek thy face, and I have found thee. ¹⁶ I have decked my couch with coverlets, with striped cloths of the yarn of Egypt. ¹⁷ I have perfumed my bed with myrrh, aloes, and cinnamon. ¹⁸ Come, let us take our fill of love until the morning; let us solace ourselves with loves. ¹⁹ For my husband is not at home, he is gone a long journey; ²⁰ He hath taken the bag of money with him; he will come home at the full moon.' ²¹ With her much fair speech she causeth him to yield, with the blandishment of her lips she enticeth him away.

¹⁹ Stedfast righteousness tendeth to life; but he that pursueth evil pursueth it to his own death.

²⁰ So is the way of an adulterous woman; she eateth, and wipeth her mouth, and saith: 'I have done no wickedness.'

⁹ even he, whose coming is according to the working of Satan with all power and signs and lying wonders, ¹⁰ and with all deceit of unrighteousness for them that perish, because they received not the love of the truth, that they might be saved.

²¹ My son, let not them depart from thine eyes; keep sound wisdom and discretion;

²¹ Let them not depart from thine eyes; keep them in the midst of thy heart.

²⁴ Now therefore, O ye children, hearken unto me, and attend to the words of my mouth.

³² Now therefore, ye children, hearken unto me; for happy are they that keep my ways. ³³ Hear instruction, and be wise, and refuse it not. ³⁴ Happy is the man that hearkeneth to me, watching daily at my gates, waiting at the posts of my doors. ³⁵ For whoso findeth me findeth life, and obtaineth favour of the LORD. ³⁶ But he that misseth me wrongeth his own soul; all they that hate me love death.'

¹⁷ Incline thine ear, and hear the words of the wise, and apply thy heart unto my knowledge. ¹⁸ For it is a pleasant thing if thou keep them within thee; let them be established altogether upon thy lips. ¹⁹ That thy trust may be in the LORD, I have made them known to thee this day, even to thee. ²⁰ Have not I written unto thee excellent things of counsels and knowledge; ²¹ That I might make thee know the certainty of the words of truth, that thou mightest bring back words of truth to them that send thee?

²⁵ See that ye refuse not him that speaketh. For if they escaped not when they refused him that warned them on earth, much more shall not we escape who turn away from him that warneth from heaven:

¹⁵ Avoid it, pass not by it; turn from it, and pass on.

²⁷ Can a man take fire in his bosom, and his clothes not be burned? ²⁸ Or can one walk upon hot coals, and his feet not be scorched?

²⁵ Let not thy heart decline to her ways, go not astray in her paths.

¹³ { And bring us not into temptation, but deliver us from the evil one. For thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, for ever. Amen.

¹¹ and have no fellowship with the unfruitful works of darkness, but rather even reprove them,

²³ And Judah said: 'Let her take it, lest we be put to shame; behold, I sent this kid, and thou hast not found her.' ²⁴ And it came to pass about three months after, that it was told Judah, saying: 'Tamar thy daughter-in-law hath played the harlot; and moreover, behold, she is with child by harlotry.' And Judah said: 'Bring her forth, and let her be burnt.' ²⁵ When she was brought forth, she sent to her father-in-law, saying: 'By the man, whose these are, am I with child'; and she said: 'Discern, I pray thee, whose are these, the signet, and the cords, and the staff.' ²⁶ And Judah acknowledged them, and said: 'She is more righteous than I; forasmuch as I gave her not to Shelah my son.' And he knew her again no more.

²⁶ Did not Solomon king of Israel sin by these things? yet among many nations was there no king like him, and he was beloved of his God, and God made him king over all Israel; nevertheless even him did the foreign women cause to sin.

¹³ They sacrifice upon the tops of the mountains, and offer upon the hills, under oaks and poplars and terebinths, because the shadow thereof is good; therefore your daughters commit harlotry, and your daughters-in-law commit adultery. ¹⁴ I will not punish your daughters when they commit harlotry, nor your daughters-in-law when they commit adultery; for they themselves consort with lewd women, and they sacrifice with harlots; and the people that is without understanding is distraught.

³⁵ He will not regard any ransom; neither will he rest content, though thou givest many gifts.

³ Give not thy strength unto women, nor thy ways to that which destroyeth kings.

⁹ Strangers have devoured his strength, and he knoweth it not; yea, gray hairs are here and there upon him, and he knoweth it not.

³⁰ but when this thy son came, who hath devoured thy living with harlots, thou killedst for him the fatted calf.

²⁷ And when he hath made her drink the water, then it shall come to pass, if she be defiled, and have acted unfaithfully against her husband, that the water that causeth the curse shall enter into her and become bitter, and her belly shall swell, and her thigh shall fall away; and the woman shall be a curse among her people.

²⁹ If they were wise, they would understand this, they would discern their latter end.

²³ Till an arrow strike through his liver; as a bird hasteneth to the snare - and knoweth not that it is at the cost of his life.

³¹ The prophets prophesy in the service of falsehood, and the priests bear rule at their beck; and My people love to have it so; What then will ye do in the end thereof?

²¹ What fruit then had ye at that time in the things whereof ye are now ashamed? for the end of those things is death.

⁴ in the name of our Lord Jesus, ye being gathered together, and my spirit, with the power of our Lord Jesus, ⁵ to deliver such a one unto Satan for the destruction of the flesh, that the spirit may be saved in the day of the Lord Jesus.

⁴ Let marriage be had in honor among all, and let the bed be undefiled; but fornicators and adulterers God will judge.

⁸ But for the fearful, and unbelieving, and sinners, and abominable, and murderers, and fornicators, and sorcerers, and idolaters, and all liars, their part shall be in the lake that burneth with fire and brimstone, which is the second death.

¹⁵ Without are the dogs, and the sorcerers, and the fornicators, and the murderers, and the idolaters, and every one that loveth and maketh a lie.

⁹ And they said: 'Stand back.' And they said: 'This one fellow came in to sojourn, and he will needs play the judge; now will we deal worse with thee, than with them.' And they pressed sore upon the man, even Lot, and drew near to break the door.

¹³ And he went out the second day, and, behold, two men of the Hebrews were striving together; and he said to him that did the wrong: 'Wherefore smitest thou thy fellow?' ¹⁴ And he said: 'Who made thee a ruler and a judge over us? thinkest thou to kill me, as thou didst kill the Egyptian?' And when he died, he said: 'The LORD look upon it, and require it.'

¹⁶ And it came to pass, as he talked with him, that the king said unto him: 'Have we made thee of the king's counsel? forbear; why shouldest thou be smitten?' Then the prophet forbore, and said: 'I know that God hath determined to destroy thee, because thou hast done this, and hast not hearkened unto my counsel.'

¹⁰ And the LORD spoke to Manasseh, and to his people; but they gave no heed. ¹¹ Wherefore the LORD brought upon them the captains of the host of the king of Assyria, who took Manasseh with hooks, and bound him with fetters, and carried him to Babylon.

¹⁶ but they mocked the messengers of God, and despised His words, and scoffed at His prophets, until the wrath of the LORD arose against His people, till there was no remedy.

¹⁷ Seeing thou hatest instruction, and castest My words behind thee.

²² But I was brutish, and ignorant; I was as a beast before Thee.

⁷ The fear of the LORD is the beginning of knowledge; but the foolish despise wisdom and discipline.

²² 'How long, ye thoughtless, will ye love thoughtlessness? And how long will scorners delight them in scorning, and fools hate knowledge?

²⁵ But ye have set at nought all my counsel, and would none of my reproof;

²⁹ For that they hated knowledge, and did not choose the fear of the LORD; ³⁰ They would none of my counsel, they despised all my reproof.

²³ For the commandment is a lamp, and the teaching is light, and reproofs of instruction are the way of life;

¹ Whoso loveth knowledge loveth correction; but he that is brutish hateth reproof.

¹⁸ Poverty and shame shall be to him that refuseth instruction; but he that regardeth reproof shall be honoured.

⁵ A fool despiseth his father's correction; but he that regardeth reproof is prudent.

⁴ Howbeit I sent unto you all My servants the prophets, sending them betimes and often, saying: Oh, do not this abominable thing that I hate.

⁴ Be ye not as your fathers, unto whom the former prophets proclaimed, saying: Thus saith the LORD of hosts: Return ye now from your evil ways, and from your evil doings; but they did not hear, nor attend unto Me, saith the LORD. ⁵ Your fathers, where are they? and the prophets, do they live for ever? ⁶ But My words and My statutes, which I commanded My servants the prophets, did they not overtake your fathers? so that they turned and said: Like as the LORD of hosts purposed to do unto us, according to our ways, and according to our doings, so hath He dealt with us.'

¹¹ But they refused to attend, and turned a stubborn shoulder, and stopped their ears, that they might not hear. ¹² Yea, they made their hearts as an adamant stone, lest they should hear the law, and the words which the LORD of hosts had sent by His spirit by the hand of the former prophets; therefore came there great wrath from the LORD of hosts. ¹³ And it came to pass that, as He called, and they would not hear; so they shall call, and I will not hear, said the LORD of hosts; ¹⁴ but I will scatter them with a whirlwind among all the nations whom they have not known. Thus the land was desolate after them, so that no man passed through nor returned; for they laid the pleasant land desolate.'

¹⁹ And this is the judgment, that the light is come into the world, and men loved the darkness rather than the light, for their works were evil. ²⁰ For every one that doeth evil hateth the light, and cometh not to the light, lest his works should be reproved.

¹⁸ I will arise and go to my father, and will say unto him, Father, I have sinned against heaven, and in thy sight;

⁸ Therefore he that rejecteth, rejecteth not man, but God, who giveth his Holy Spirit unto you.

¹² But we beseech you, brethren, to know them that labor among you, and are over you in the Lord, and admonish you, ¹³ and to esteem them exceeding highly in love for their work's sake. Be at peace among yourselves.

⁷ Remember them that had the rule over you, men that spake unto you the word of God, and considering the issue of their life, imitate their faith.

¹¹ Harlotry, wine, and new wine take away the heart. ¹² My people ask counsel at their stock, and their staff declareth unto them; for the spirit of harlotry hath caused them to err, and they have gone astray from under their God.

⁶ Now these things were our examples, to the intent we should not lust after evil things, as they also lusted. ⁷ Neither be ye idolaters, as were some of them, as it is written, The people sat down to eat and drink, and rose up to play. ⁸ Neither let us commit fornication, as some of them committed, and fell in one day three and twenty thousand.

¹⁰ but chiefly them that walk after the flesh in the lust of defilement, and despise dominion. Daring, self-willed, they tremble not to rail at dignities: ¹¹ whereas angels, though greater in might and power, bring not a railing judgment against them before the Lord. ¹² But these, as creatures without reason, born mere animals to be taken and destroyed, railing in matters whereof they are ignorant, shall in their destroying be destroyed, ¹³ receiving the hire of wrong-doing, men that count it pleasure to revel in the day-time, spots and blemishes, revelling in their deceivings while they feast with you, ¹⁴ having eyes full of adultery, and that cannot cease from sin, enticing unstedfast souls, having a heart exercised in covetousness, children of cursing, ¹⁵ having forsaken the right way, they went astray, having followed the way of Balaam the son of Beor, who loved the hire of wrong-doing, ¹⁶ but he was rebuked for his own transgression; a dumb ass spake with man's voice and stayed the madness of the prophet. ¹⁷ These are springs without water, clouds driven by a storm, for whom the blackness of darkness hath been reserved for ever. ¹⁸ For, uttering great swelling words of vanity, they entice in the lusts of the flesh, by lasciviousness, those who have indeed escaped from them that live in error,

⁷ Even as Sodom and Gomorrah, and the cities about them, having in like manner with these given themselves over to fornication and gone after strange flesh, are set forth as an example, suffering the punishment of eternal fire. ⁸ Yet in like manner these also in their dreamings defile the flesh, and set at nought dominion, and rail at dignities. ⁹ But Michael the archangel, when contending with the devil he disputed about the body of Moses, durst not bring against him a railing judgment, but said, The Lord rebuke thee. ¹⁰ But these rail at whatsoever things they know not; and what they understand naturally, like the creatures without reason, in these things are they destroyed. ¹¹ Woe unto them! For they went in the way of Cain, and ran riotously in the error of Balaam for hire, and perished in the gainsaying of Korah. ¹² These are they who are hidden rocks in your love-feasts when they feast together, shepherds that without fear feed themselves, clouds without water, carried along by winds, autumn leaves without fruit, twice dead, plucked up by the roots, ¹³ Wild waves of the sea, foaming out their own shame, wandering stars, for whom the blackness of darkness hath been reserved forever.

² But, because of fornications, let each man have his own wife, and let each woman have her own husband. ³ Let the husband render unto the wife benevolence due her; and likewise also the wife unto the husband. ⁴ The wife hath not power over her own body, but the husband; and likewise also the husband hath not power over his own body, but the wife. ⁵ Defraud ye not one the other, except it be by consent for a season, that ye may give yourselves unto fasting and prayer, and come together again, that Satan tempt you not because of your incontinency.

⁶⁰ And they blessed Rebekah, and said unto her: 'Our sister, be thou the mother of thousands of ten thousands, and let thy seed possess the gate of those that hate them.'

²⁸ And Israel dwelleth in safety, the fountain of Jacob alone, in a land of corn and wine; yea, his heavens drop down dew.

O LORD, Thou hast searched me, and known me. ² Thou knowest my downsitting and mine uprising, Thou understandest my thought afar off. ³ Thou measurest my going about and my lying down, and art acquainted with all my ways. ⁴ For there is not a word in my tongue, but, lo, O LORD, Thou knowest it altogether. ⁵ Thou hast hemmed me in behind and before, and laid Thy hand upon me. ⁶ Such knowledge is too wonderful for me; too high, I cannot attain unto it. ⁷ Whither shall I go from Thy spirit? or whither shall I flee from Thy presence? ⁸ If I ascend up into heaven, Thou art there; if I make my bed in the nether-world, behold, Thou art there. ⁹ If I take the wings of the morning, and dwell in the uttermost parts of the sea; ¹⁰ Even there would Thy hand lead me, and Thy right hand would hold me. ¹¹ And if I say: 'Surely the darkness shall envelop me, and the light about me shall be night'; ¹² Even the darkness is not too dark for Thee, but the night shineth as the day; the darkness is even as the light.

³ The eyes of the LORD are in every place, keeping watch upon the evil and the good.

² And let them not say to their heart - I remember all their wickedness; now their own doings have beset them about, they are before My face.

¹³ And there is no creature that is not manifest in his sight; but all things are naked and laid open before the eyes of him with whom we have to do.

¹⁸ And to the angel of the church in Thyatira write; These things saith the Son of God, who hath his eyes like a flame of fire, and his feet are like unto burnished brass;

²³ And I will kill her children with death, and all the churches shall know that I am he that searcheth the reins and hearts; and I will give unto each one of you according to your works.

²³ But if ye will not do so, behold, ye have sinned against the LORD; and know ye your sin which will find you.

¹⁵ (7:16) He hath digged a pit, and hollowed it, and is fallen into the ditch which he made. ¹⁶ (7:17) His mischief shall return upon his own head, and his violence shall come down upon his own pate.

¹⁹ Thine own wickedness shall correct thee, and thy backslidings shall reprove thee: know therefore and see that it is an evil and a bitter thing, that thou hast forsaken the LORD thy God, neither is My fear in thee, saith the Lord GOD of hosts.

⁹ I wrote unto you in my epistle to have no company with fornicators, ¹⁰ not at all meaning with the fornicators of this world, or with the covetous and extortioners, or with idolaters, for then must ye needs go out of the world:

¹⁹ Now the works of the flesh are manifest, which are these; adultery, fornication, uncleanness, lasciviousness, ²⁰ idolatry, sorcery, enmities, strife, jealousies, wraths, factions, divisions, parties, ²¹ envyings, murders, drunkenness, revellings, and such like, of which I forewarn you, even as I did forewarn you, that they who practice such things shall not inherit the kingdom of God.

⁷ Be not deceived, God is not mocked; for whatsoever a man soweth, that shall he also reap. ⁸ For he that soweth unto his own flesh shall of the flesh reap corruption, but he that soweth unto the Spirit shall of the Spirit reap eternal life.

⁵ For this ye know of a surety, that no fornicator, nor unclean person, nor covetous man, who is an idolater, hath any inheritance in the kingdom of Christ and God. ⁶ Let no man deceive you with empty words; for because of these things cometh the wrath of God upon the sons of disobedience.

²¹ Is not their tent-cord plucked up within them? They die, and that without wisdom.'

¹² But if they hearken not, they shall perish by the sword, and they shall die without knowledge.

¹² (81:13) So I let them go after the stubbornness of their heart, that they might walk in their own counsels.

¹⁴ The dissembler in heart shall have his fill from his own ways; and a good man shall be satisfied from himself.

³² The wicked is thrust down in his misfortune; but the righteous, even when he is brought to death, hath hope.

¹⁵ having forsaken the right way, they went astray, having followed the way of Balaam the son of Beor, who loved the hire of wrong-doing, ¹⁶ but he was rebuked for his own transgression; a dumb ass spake with man's voice and stayed the madness of the prophet. ¹⁷ These are springs without water, clouds driven by a storm, for whom the blackness of darkness hath been reserved for ever. ¹⁸ For, uttering great swelling words of vanity, they entice in the lusts of the flesh, by lasciviousness, those who have indeed escaped from them that live in error, ¹⁹ promising them liberty, while they themselves are bondservants of corruption, for of whom a man is overcome, of the same is he also brought into bondage. ²⁰ For if, after they have escaped the defilements of the world through the knowledge of the Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ, they are again entangled therein and overcome, the last state is become worse with them than the first. ²¹ For it were better for them not to have known the way of righteousness, than, after knowing it, to turn back from the holy commandment delivered unto them. ²² But it has happened unto them according to the true proverb, The dog turning to his own vomit again, and the sow that had washed to wallowing in the mire.
