¹ And it came to pass in those days, that the Philistines gathered their armies together for warfare, to fight with Israel. And Achish said unto David, Know you assuredly, that you shall go out with me to battle, you and your men. ² And David said to Achish, Surely you shall know what your servant can do. And Achish said to David, Therefore will I make you my guardian forever. ³ Now Samuel was dead, and all Israel had lamented him, and buried him in Ramah, even in his own city. And Saul had put away the mediums, and the wizards, out of the land. ⁴ And the Philistines gathered themselves together, and came and encamped in Shunem: and Saul gathered all Israel together, and they encamped in Gilboa. ⁵ And when Saul saw the host of the Philistines, he was afraid, and his heart greatly trembled. ⁶ And when Saul inquired of the LORD, the LORD answered him not, neither by dreams, nor by Urim, nor by prophets. ⁷ Then said Saul unto his servants, Seek me a woman who is a medium, that I may go to her, and inquire of her. And his servants said to him, Behold, there is a woman that is a medium at Endor. ⁸ And Saul disguised himself, and put on other clothing, and he went, and two men with him, and they came to the woman by night: and he said, I pray you, divine unto me as a medium, and bring me him up, whom I shall name unto you. ⁹ And the woman said unto him, Behold, you know what Saul has done, how he has cut off those that are mediums, and the wizards, out of the land: why then lay you a snare for my life, to cause me to die? ¹⁰ And Saul swore to her by the LORD, saying, As the LORD lives, there shall no punishment happen to you for this thing. ¹¹ Then said the woman, Whom shall I bring up unto you? And he said, Bring me up Samuel. ¹² And when the woman saw Samuel, she cried with a loud voice: and the woman spoke to Saul, saying, Why have you deceived me? for you are Saul. ¹³ And the king said unto her, Be not afraid: for what saw you? And the woman said unto Saul, I saw a god ascending out of the earth. ¹⁴ And he said unto her, What form is he of? And she said, An old man comes up; and he is covered with a mantle. And Saul perceived that it was Samuel, and he stooped with his face to the ground, and bowed himself. ¹⁵ And Samuel said to Saul, Why have you disturbed me, to bring me up? And Saul answered, I am much distressed; for the Philistines make war against me, and God has departed from me, and answers me no more, neither by prophets, nor by dreams: therefore I have called you, that you may make known unto me what I shall do. ¹⁶ Then said Samuel, Why then do you ask of me, seeing the LORD has departed from you, and has become your enemy? ¹⁷ And the LORD has done to you, as he spoke by me: for the LORD has torn the kingdom out of your hand, and given it to your neighbor, even to David: ¹⁸ Because you obeyed not the voice of the LORD, nor executed his fierce wrath upon Amalek, therefore has the LORD done this thing unto you this day. ¹⁹ Moreover the LORD will also deliver Israel with you into the hand of the Philistines: and tomorrow shall you and your sons be with me: the LORD also shall deliver the army of Israel into the hand of the Philistines. ²⁰ Then Saul fell immediately full length on the ground, and was very much afraid, because of the words of Samuel: and there was no strength in him; for he had eaten no food all the day, nor all the night. ²¹ And the woman came unto Saul, and saw that he was greatly troubled, and said unto him, Behold, your handmaid has obeyed your voice, and I have put my life in my hand, and have hearkened unto your words which you spoke unto me. ²² Now therefore, I pray you, hearken also unto the voice of your handmaid, and let me set a piece of bread before you; and eat, that you may have strength, when you go on your way. ²³ But he refused, and said, I will not eat. But his servants, together with the woman, compelled him; and he hearkened unto their voice. So he arose from the earth, and sat upon the bed. ²⁴ And the woman had a fatted calf in the house; and she hastened, and killed it, and took flour, and kneaded it, and did bake unleavened bread of it: ²⁵ And she brought it before Saul, and before his servants; and they did eat. Then they rose up, and went away that night.

¹ Now these are the nations which the LORD left, to test Israel by them, even as many of Israel as had not known all the wars of Canaan; ² Only that the generations of the children of Israel might know, to teach them war, at least those who before knew nothing thereof; ³ Namely, five lords of the Philistines, and all the Canaanites, and the Sidonians, and the Hivites that dwelt in mount Lebanon, from mount Baalhermon unto the entrance of Hamath. ⁴ And they were to test Israel by them, to know whether they would hearken unto the commandments of the LORD, which he commanded their fathers by the hand of Moses.

⁷ And when the Philistines heard that the children of Israel were gathered together to Mizpah, the lords of the Philistines went up against Israel. And when the children of Israel heard it, they were afraid of the Philistines.

⁵ And the Philistines gathered themselves together to fight with Israel, thirty thousand chariots, and six thousand horsemen, and people as the sand which is on the sea shore in multitude: and they came up, and encamped in Michmash, eastward from Bethaven.

¹ Now the Philistines gathered together their armies to battle, and were gathered together at Socoh, which belongs to Judah, and encamped between Socoh and Azekah, in Ephesdammin.

¹² And Achish believed David, saying, He has made his people Israel utterly to abhor him; therefore he shall be my servant forever.

¹ Now the Philistines gathered together all their armies to Aphek: and the Israelites encamped by a fountain which is in Jezreel. ² And the lords of the Philistines passed on by hundreds, and by thousands: but David and his men passed on in the rear with Achish. ³ Then said the princes of the Philistines, What are these Hebrews doing here? And Achish said unto the princes of the Philistines, Is not this David, the servant of Saul the king of Israel, who has been with me these days, or these years, and I have found no fault in him since he deserted unto me unto this day?

¹⁰ And Achish said, where have you made a raid today? And David said, Against the south of Judah, and against the south of the Jerahmeelites, and against the south of the Kenites.

¹⁶ And it came to pass, when Hushai the Archite, David’s friend, was come unto Absalom, that Hushai said unto Absalom, God save the king, God save the king. ¹⁷ And Absalom said to Hushai, Is this your kindness to your friend? why went you not with your friend? ¹⁸ And Hushai said unto Absalom, Nay; but whom the LORD, and this people, and all the men of Israel, choose, his will I be, and with him will I abide. ¹⁹ And again, whom should I serve? should I not serve in the presence of his son? as I have served in your father’s presence, so will I be in your presence.

⁹ Let love be without hypocrisy. Abhor that which is evil; cleave to that which is good.

¹⁸ You shall not allow a witch to live.

³¹ Regard not mediums, neither seek after wizards, to be defiled by them: I am the LORD your God.

⁶ And the soul that turns after mediums, and after wizards, to play the harlot after them, I will even set my face against that soul, and will cut him off from among his people.

²⁷ A man also or woman that is a medium, or that is a wizard, shall surely be put to death: they shall stone them with stones: their blood shall be upon them.

¹⁰ There shall not be found among you any one that makes his son or his daughter to pass through the fire, or that uses divination, or sorcery, or interprets omens, or is a witch, ¹¹ Or casts spells, or is a medium, or a wizard, or consults the dead.

¹⁷ And his return was to Ramah; for there was his house; and there he judged Israel; and there he built an altar unto the LORD.

²³ For rebellion is as the sin of witchcraft, and stubbornness is as iniquity and idolatry. Because you have rejected the word of the LORD, he has also rejected you from being king.

¹ And Samuel died; and all the Israelites were gathered together, and lamented over him, and buried him in his house at Ramah. And David arose, and went down to the wilderness of Paran.

⁹ And the woman said unto him, Behold, you know what Saul has done, how he has cut off those that are mediums, and the wizards, out of the land: why then lay you a snare for my life, to cause me to die?

¹ The righteous perishes, and no man lays it to heart: and merciful men are taken away, none considering that the righteous is taken away from the evil to come. ² He shall enter into peace: they shall rest in their beds, each one walking in his uprightness.

¹⁶ And it came to pass, as we went to prayer, a certain maid possessed with a spirit of divination met us, who brought her masters much gain by soothsaying: ¹⁷ The same followed Paul and us, and cried, saying, These men are the servants of the most high God, who show unto us the way of salvation. ¹⁸ And this did she many days. But Paul, being troubled, turned and said to the spirit, I command you in the name of Jesus Christ to come out of her. And he came out the same hour. ¹⁹ And when her masters saw that the hope of their gains was gone, they caught Paul and Silas, and dragged them into the marketplace unto the rulers,

¹⁸ And their border went to Jezreel, and included Chesulloth, and Shunem,

¹ Now the Philistines fought against Israel: and the men of Israel fled from before the Philistines, and fell down slain in mount Gilboa.

⁶ And the young man that told him said, As I happened by chance upon mount Gilboa, behold, Saul leaned upon his spear; and, lo, the chariots and horsemen followed hard after him.

²¹ You mountains of Gilboa, let there be no dew, neither let there be rain, upon you, nor fields of offerings: for there the shield of the mighty is vilely cast away, the shield of Saul, as though he had not been anointed with oil.

¹² And David went and took the bones of Saul and the bones of Jonathan his son from the men of Jabesh-gilead, who had stolen them from the street of Beth-shan, where the Philistines had hanged them, when the Philistines had slain Saul in Gilboa:

⁸ And it fell on a day, that Elisha passed to Shunem, where there was a wealthy woman; and she urged him to eat some food. And so it was, that as often as he passed by, he turned in there to eat some food.

²¹ A dreadful sound is in his ears: in prosperity the destroyer shall come upon him.

¹¹ Terrors shall make him afraid on every side, and shall drive him to his feet.

⁵ They saw it, and so they marveled; they were troubled, and hastened away. ⁶ Fear took hold upon them there, and pain, as of a woman in travail.

¹⁹ How are they brought into desolation, as in a moment! they are utterly consumed with terrors.

²⁴ The fear of the wicked, it shall come upon him: but the desire of the righteous shall be granted.

² And it was told the house of David, saying, Syria is allied with Ephraim. And his heart was moved, and the heart of his people, as the trees of the forest are moved with the wind.

³ Therefore are my loins filled with pain: pangs have taken hold upon me, as the pangs of a woman that travails: I was bowed down at the hearing of it; I was dismayed at the seeing of it. ⁴ My heart panted, fearfulness appalled me: the night of my pleasure has he turned into fear unto me.

²⁰ But the wicked are like the troubled sea, when it cannot rest, whose waters cast up mire and dirt. ²¹ There is no peace, says my God, to the wicked.

⁶ Then the king's countenance was changed, and his thoughts troubled him, so that the joints of his hips were loosened, and his knees struck one against another.

¹² And he dreamed, and behold a ladder set up on the earth, and the top of it reached to heaven: and behold the angels of God ascending and descending on it. ¹³ And, behold, the LORD stood above it, and said, I am the LORD God of Abraham your father, and the God of Isaac: the land on which you lie, to you will I give it, and to your descendants; ¹⁴ And your descendants shall be as the dust of the earth, and you shall spread abroad to the west, and to the east, and to the north, and to the south: and in you and in your descendants shall all the families of the earth be blessed. ¹⁵ And, behold, I am with you, and will keep you in all places wherever you go, and will bring you again into this land; for I will not leave you, until I have done that which I have spoken to you of.

² And God spoke unto Israel in the visions of the night, and said, Jacob, Jacob. And he said, Here am I. ³ And he said, I am God, the God of your father: fear not to go down into Egypt; for I will there make of you a great nation: ⁴ I will go down with you into Egypt; and I will also surely bring you up again: and Joseph shall put his hand upon your eyes.

²⁰ And the fourth row a beryl, and an onyx, and a jasper: they shall be set in gold settings .

³⁰ And you shall put in the breastplate of judgment the Urim and the Thummim; and they shall be upon Aaron's heart, when he goes in before the LORD: and Aaron shall bear the judgment of the children of Israel upon his heart before the LORD continually.

⁶ And he said, Hear now my words: If there be a prophet among you, I the LORD will make myself known unto him in a vision, and will speak unto him in a dream.

²¹ And he shall stand before Eleazar the priest, who shall ask counsel for him after the judgment of Urim before the LORD: at his word shall they go out, and at his word they shall come in, both he, and all the children of Israel with him, even all the congregation.

⁸ And of Levi he said, Let your Thummim and your Urim be with your holy one, whom you did test at Massah, and with whom you did strive at the waters of Meribah;

³⁷ And Saul asked counsel of God, Shall I go down after the Philistines? will you deliver them into the hand of Israel? But he answered him not that day.

¹³ So Saul died for his transgression which he committed against the LORD, even against the word of the LORD, which he kept not, and also for asking counsel of one that was a medium, to seek council; ¹⁴ And inquired not of the LORD: therefore he slew him, and turned the kingdom over to David the son of Jesse.

¹⁴ For God speaks once, yea twice, yet man perceives it not. ¹⁵ In a dream, in a vision of the night, when deep sleep falls upon men, in slumberings upon the bed; ¹⁶ Then he opens the ears of men, and seals their instruction,

⁹ We see not our signs: there is no more any prophet: neither is there among us any that knows how long.

¹ The proverbs of Solomon the son of David, king of Israel; ² To know wisdom and instruction; to perceive the words of understanding; ³ To receive the instruction of wisdom, justice, and judgment, and equity; ⁴ To give prudence to the simple, to the young man knowledge and discretion. ⁵ A wise man will hear, and will increase learning; and a man of understanding shall attain unto wise counsels: ⁶ To understand a proverb, and the interpretation; the words of the wise, and their riddles. ⁷ The fear of the LORD is the beginning of knowledge: but fools despise wisdom and instruction. ⁸ My son, hear the instruction of your father, and forsake not the law of your mother: ⁹ For they shall be an ornament of grace unto your head, and chains about your neck. ¹⁰ My son, if sinners entice you, consent not. ¹¹ If they say, Come with us, let us lie in wait for blood, let us lurk secretly for the innocent without cause: ¹² Let us swallow them up alive as the grave; and whole, as those that go down into the pit: ¹³ We shall find all kinds of precious substance, we shall fill our houses with spoil: ¹⁴ Cast in your lot among us; let us all have one purse: ¹⁵ My son, walk not in the way with them; refrain your foot from their path: ¹⁶ For their feet run to evil, and make haste to shed blood. ¹⁷ Surely in vain the net is spread in the sight of any bird. ¹⁸ And they lie in wait for their own blood; they lurk secretly for their own lives. ¹⁹ So are the ways of everyone that is greedy of gain; which takes away the life of its owners. ²⁰ Wisdom cries aloud outside; she raises her voice in the open square: ²¹ She cries in the chief place of concourse, in the openings of the gates: in the city she utters her words, saying, ²² How long, you simple ones, will you love simplicity? and the scoffers delight in their scoffing, and fools hate knowledge? ²³ Turn you at my reproof: behold, I will pour out my spirit unto you, I will make known my words unto you. ²⁴ Because I have called, and you refused; I have stretched out my hand, and no man regarded; ²⁵ But you have ignored all my counsel, and would have none of my reproof: ²⁶ I also will laugh at your calamity; I will mock when your fear comes; ²⁷ When your terror comes as desolation, and your destruction comes as a whirlwind; when distress and anguish comes upon you. ²⁸ Then shall they call upon me, but I will not answer; they shall seek me early, but they shall not find me: ²⁹ Because they hated knowledge, and did not choose the fear of the LORD: ³⁰ They would have none of my counsel: they despised all my reproof. ³¹ Therefore shall they eat of the fruit of their own way, and be filled with their own devices. ³² For the turning away of the simple shall slay them, and the prosperity of fools shall destroy them. ³³ But whosoever hearkens unto me shall dwell safely, and shall be secure from the fear of evil.

¹ Boast not yourself of tomorrow; for you know not what a day may bring forth. ² Let another man praise you, and not your own mouth; a stranger, and not your own lips. ³ A stone is heavy, and the sand weighty; but a fool's wrath is heavier than them both. ⁴ Wrath is cruel, and anger is outrageous; but which is able to stand before jealousy? ⁵ Open rebuke is better than hidden love. ⁶ Faithful are the wounds of a friend; but the kisses of an enemy are deceitful. ⁷ The full soul loathes a honeycomb; but to the hungry soul every bitter thing is sweet. ⁸ As a bird that wanders from her nest, so is a man that wanders from his place. ⁹ Ointment and perfume rejoice the heart: so does the sweetness of a man's friend by hearty counsel. ¹⁰ Your own friend, and your father's friend, forsake not; neither go into your brother's house in the day of your calamity: for better is a neighbor that is near than a brother far off. ¹¹ My son, be wise, and make my heart glad, that I may answer him that reproaches me. ¹² A prudent man foresees the evil, and hides himself; but the simple pass on, and are punished. ¹³ Take his garment who is surety for a stranger, and hold it as a pledge of him for an immoral woman. ¹⁴ He that blesses his friend with a loud voice, rising early in the morning, it shall be counted a curse to him. ¹⁵ A continual dripping on a very rainy day and a contentious woman are alike. ¹⁶ Whosoever restrains her restrains the wind, or grasps oil with his right hand. ¹⁷ Iron sharpens iron; so a man sharpens the countenance of his friend. ¹⁸ Whosoever keeps the fig tree shall eat its fruit: so he that waits on his master shall be honored. ¹⁹ As in water face reflects face, so the heart of man to man. ²⁰ Sheol and destruction are never full; so the eyes of man are never satisfied. ²¹ As the refining pot for silver, and the furnace for gold; so is a man judged by his praise. ²² Though you should crush a fool in a mortar among grain with a pestle, yet will not his foolishness depart from him. ²³ Be diligent to know the state of your flocks, and look well to your herds. ²⁴ For riches are not forever: and does the crown endure to every generation? ²⁵ The hay appears, and the tender grass shows itself, and herbs of the mountains are gathered. ²⁶ The lambs are for your clothing, and the goats are for the price of the field. ²⁷ And you shall have goats' milk enough for your food, for the food of your household, and for the maintenance for your maidservants.

¹ The wicked flee when no man pursues: but the righteous are bold as a lion. ² For the transgression of a land many are the princes thereof: but by a man of understanding and knowledge its state shall be prolonged. ³ A poor man that oppresses the poor is like a sweeping rain which leaves no food. ⁴ They that forsake the law praise the wicked: but such as keep the law contend with them. ⁵ Evil men understand not justice: but they that seek the LORD understand all things. ⁶ Better is the poor who walks in his uprightness, than he that is perverse in his ways, though he be rich. ⁷ Whosoever keeps the law is a wise son: but he that is a companion of gluttonous men shames his father. ⁸ He that by usury and unjust gain increases his substance, he shall gather it for him that will pity the poor. ⁹ He that turns away his ear from hearing the law, even his prayer shall be abomination. ¹⁰ Whosoever causes the righteous to go astray in an evil way, he shall fall himself into his own pit: but the upright shall have good things in possession. ¹¹ The rich man is wise in his own eyes; but the poor that has understanding will find him out. ¹² When righteous men do rejoice, there is great glory: but when the wicked rise, men hide themselves. ¹³ He that covers his sins shall not prosper: but whosoever confesses and forsakes them shall have mercy. ¹⁴ Happy is the man that is reverent always: but he that hardens his heart shall fall into calamity. ¹⁵ As a roaring lion, and a charging bear; so is a wicked ruler over the poor people. ¹⁶ The prince that lacks understanding is also a great oppressor: but he that hates covetousness shall prolong his days. ¹⁷ A man that does violence to the blood of any person shall flee to a pit; let no man help him. ¹⁸ Whosoever walks uprightly shall be saved: but he that is perverse in his ways shall fall at once. ¹⁹ He that tills his land shall have plenty of bread: but he that follows after worthless pursuits shall have poverty enough. ²⁰ A faithful man shall abound with blessings: but he that makes haste to be rich shall not go unpunished. ²¹ To show partiality is not good: because for a piece of bread that man will transgress. ²² He that hastens to be rich has an evil eye, and considers not that poverty shall come upon him. ²³ He that rebukes a man shall find more favor afterwards than he that flatters with the tongue. ²⁴ Whosoever robs his father or his mother, and says, It is no transgression; the same is the companion of a destroyer. ²⁵ He that is of a proud heart stirs up strife: but he that puts his trust in the LORD shall be prospered. ²⁶ He that trusts in his own heart is a fool: but whosoever walks wisely, he shall be delivered. ²⁷ He that gives unto the poor shall not lack: but he that hides his eyes shall have many a curse. ²⁸ When the wicked arise, men hide themselves: but when they perish, the righteous increase.

²⁸ The prophet that has a dream, let him tell a dream; and he that has my word, let him speak my word faithfully. What is the chaff to the wheat? says the LORD.

⁹ Her gates are sunk into the ground; he has destroyed and broken her bars: her king and her princes are among the nations: the law is no more; her prophets also find no vision from the LORD.

¹ And it came to pass in the seventh year, in the fifth month, the tenth day of the month, that certain of the elders of Israel came to inquire of the LORD, and sat before me. ² Then came the word of the LORD unto me, saying, ³ Son of man, speak unto the elders of Israel, and say unto them, Thus says the Lord GOD; Have you come to inquire of me? As I live, says the Lord GOD, I will not be inquired of by you.

²⁰ But while he thought on these things, behold, the angel of the Lord appeared unto him in a dream, saying, Joseph, son of David, fear not to take unto you Mary your wife: for that which is conceived in her is of the Holy Spirit.

³¹ Now we know that God hears not sinners: but if any man be a worshiper of God, and does his will, him he hears.

³ You ask, and receive not, because you ask amiss, that you may spend it upon your lusts.

¹¹ Or casts spells, or is a medium, or a wizard, or consults the dead.

¹¹ And Manasseh had in Issachar and in Asher Bethshean and its villages, and Ibleam and its villages, and the inhabitants of Dor and its villages, and the inhabitants of Endor and its villages, and the inhabitants of Taanach and its villages, and the inhabitants of Megiddo and its villages, even three regions.

³ Now Samuel was dead, and all Israel had lamented him, and buried him in Ramah, even in his own city. And Saul had put away the mediums, and the wizards, out of the land.

² And Ahaziah fell down through a lattice in his upper chamber that was in Samaria, and was sick: and he sent messengers, and said unto them, Go, inquire of Baal-zebub the god of Ekron whether I shall recover of this disease. ³ But the angel of the LORD said to Elijah the Tishbite, Arise, go up to meet the messengers of the king of Samaria, and say unto them, Is it because there is not a God in Israel, that you go to inquire of Baal-zebub the god of Ekron?

³³ And while he yet talked with them, behold, the messenger came down unto him: and he said, Behold, this evil is of the LORD; why should I wait for the LORD any longer?

¹³ So Saul died for his transgression which he committed against the LORD, even against the word of the LORD, which he kept not, and also for asking counsel of one that was a medium, to seek council;

¹⁰ Who perished at Endor: they became as refuse for the earth.

¹⁹ And when they shall say unto you, Seek unto them that are mediums, and unto wizards that whisper, and that mutter: should not a people seek unto their God? rather than the dead on behalf of the living? ²⁰ To the law and to the testimony: if they speak not according to this word, it is because there is no light in them.

³ And the spirit of Egypt shall fail in its midst; and I will destroy its counsel: and they shall seek after the idols, and the charmers, and the mediums, and the wizards.

²⁵ The LORD is good unto them that wait for him, to the soul that seeks him. ²⁶ It is good that a man should both hope and quietly wait for the salvation of the LORD.

³ For the vision is yet for an appointed time, but at the end it shall speak, and not lie: though it tarries, wait for it; because it will surely come, it will not delay.

² And Jeroboam said to his wife, Arise, I pray you, and disguise yourself, that you be not known to be the wife of Jeroboam; and get you to Shiloh: behold, there is Ahijah the prophet, who told me that I should be king over this people. ³ And take with you ten loaves, and cakes, and a jar of honey, and go to him: he shall tell you what shall become of the child.

³⁰ And the king of Israel said unto Jehoshaphat, I will disguise myself, and enter into the battle; but put you on your robes. And the king of Israel disguised himself, and went into the battle.

³⁴ And a certain man drew a bow at random, and struck the king of Israel between the joints of his armor: therefore he said unto the driver of his chariot, Turn your hand, and carry me out of the battle; for I am wounded.

²⁹ And the king of Israel said unto Jehoshaphat, I will disguise myself, and will go to the battle; but put you on your robes. So the king of Israel disguised himself; and they went to the battle.

²² Nevertheless Josiah would not turn his face from him, but disguised himself, that he might fight with him, and hearkened not unto the words of Necho from the mouth of God, and came to fight in the valley of Megiddo.

¹³ They are of those that rebel against the light; they know not its ways, nor abide in its paths. ¹⁴ The murderer rising with the light kills the poor and needy, and in the night is as a thief. ¹⁵ The eye also of the adulterer waits for the twilight, saying, No eye shall see me: and disguises his face.

¹⁹ And when they shall say unto you, Seek unto them that are mediums, and unto wizards that whisper, and that mutter: should not a people seek unto their God? rather than the dead on behalf of the living?

²⁴ Can any hide himself in secret places that I shall not see him? says the LORD. Do not I fill heaven and earth? says the LORD.

¹⁹ And this is the condemnation, that light is come into the world, and men loved darkness rather than light, because their deeds were evil.

¹³ Otherwise I should have dealt falsely against my own life: for there is no matter hid from the king, and you yourself would have set yourself against me.

⁷ And it came to pass, when the king of Israel had read the letter, that he tore his clothes, and said, Am I God, to kill and to make alive, that this man does send unto me to cure a man of his leprosy? therefore consider, I pray you, and see how he seeks a quarrel against me.

⁵ For God does know that in the day you eat thereof, then your eyes shall be opened, and you shall be as gods, knowing good and evil.

⁷ You shall not take the name of the LORD your God in vain; for the LORD will not hold him guiltless that takes his name in vain.

¹⁰ There shall not be found among you any one that makes his son or his daughter to pass through the fire, or that uses divination, or sorcery, or interprets omens, or is a witch, ¹¹ Or casts spells, or is a medium, or a wizard, or consults the dead. ¹² For all that do these things are an abomination unto the LORD: and because of these abominations the LORD your God does drive them out from before you.

³⁹ For, as the LORD lives, who saves Israel, though it be in Jonathan my son, he shall surely die. But there was not a man among all the people that answered him.

⁶ And Saul hearkened unto the voice of Jonathan: and Saul swore, As the LORD lives, he shall not be slain.

¹¹ Then said she, I pray you, let the king remember the LORD your God, that you would not allow the revengers of blood to destroy any more, lest they destroy my son. And he said, As the LORD lives, there shall not one hair of your son fall to the earth.

⁷² And again he denied it with an oath, I do not know the man.

²³ And he swore unto her, Whatsoever you shall ask of me, I will give it to you, unto the half of my kingdom.

⁵ And the LORD said unto Ahijah, Behold, the wife of Jeroboam comes to ask a thing of you for her son; for he is sick: thus and thus shall you say unto her: for it shall be, when she comes in, that she shall pretend to be another woman.

¹⁶ And he shall be your spokesman unto the people: and he shall be, even he shall be to you instead of a mouth, and you shall be to him instead of God.

²⁸ You shall not revile God, nor curse the ruler of your people.

⁶ I have said, You are gods; and all of you are children of the most High. ⁷ But you shall die like men, and fall like one of the princes.

³⁴ Jesus answered them, Is it not written in your law, I said, You are gods? ³⁵ If he called them gods, unto whom the word of God came, and the scripture cannot be broken;

²⁷ And as Samuel turned about to go away, he laid hold upon the skirt of his mantle, and it tore.

⁸ David also arose afterward, and went out of the cave, and called after Saul, saying, My lord the king. And when Saul looked behind him, David stooped with his face to the earth, and bowed himself.

⁸ And Elijah took his mantle, and wrapped it together, and struck the waters, and they were divided here and there, so that they both went over on dry ground.

¹³ He took up also the mantle of Elijah that fell from him, and went back, and stood by the bank of Jordan; ¹⁴ And he took the mantle of Elijah that fell from him, and struck the waters, and said, Where is the LORD God of Elijah? and when he also had struck the waters, they parted to the one side and to the other: and Elisha went over.

²⁰ And she said, The Philistines be upon you, Samson. And he awoke out of his sleep, and said, I will go out as at other times before, and shake myself. And he knew not that the LORD was departed from him.

¹³ Then Samuel took the horn of oil, and anointed him in the midst of his brethren: and the spirit of the LORD came upon David from that day forward. So Samuel rose up, and went to Ramah. ¹⁴ But the spirit of the LORD departed from Saul, and an evil spirit from the LORD troubled him.

¹² And Saul was afraid of David, because the LORD was with him, and was departed from Saul.

² Therefore David inquired of the LORD, saying, Shall I go and strike these Philistines? And the LORD said unto David, Go, and strike the Philistines, and save Keilah.

⁴ Then David inquired of the LORD yet again. And the LORD answered him and said, Arise, go down to Keilah: for I will deliver the Philistines into your hand.

⁹ And David knew that Saul secretly plotted evil against him; and he said to Abiathar the priest, Bring here the ephod. ¹⁰ Then said David, O LORD God of Israel, your servant has certainly heard that Saul seeks to come to Keilah, to destroy the city for my sake.

⁶ And when Saul inquired of the LORD, the LORD answered him not, neither by dreams, nor by Urim, nor by prophets.

⁸ And Saul disguised himself, and put on other clothing, and he went, and two men with him, and they came to the woman by night: and he said, I pray you, divine unto me as a medium, and bring me him up, whom I shall name unto you.

¹¹ Then said the woman, Whom shall I bring up unto you? And he said, Bring me up Samuel.

¹¹ Cast me not away from your presence; and take not your holy Spirit from me.

¹¹ And you mourn at the last, when your flesh and your body are consumed, ¹² And say, How have I hated instruction, and my heart despised reproof; ¹³ And have not obeyed the voice of my teachers, nor inclined my ear to them that instructed me!

¹⁴ The backslider in heart shall be filled with his own ways: and a good man shall be satisfied from above himself.

¹⁷ Have you not brought this unto yourself, in that you have forsaken the LORD your God, when he led you by the way? ¹⁸ And now what have you to do in the way to Egypt, to drink the waters of Sihor? or what have you to do in the way to Assyria, to drink the waters of the river?

¹² Though they bring up their children, yet will I bereave them, that there shall not be a man left: yea, woe also to them when I depart from them!

⁴¹ Then shall he say also unto them on the left hand, Depart from me, you cursed, into everlasting fire, prepared for the devil and his angels:

²³ And in hades he lifted up his eyes, being in torment, and seeing Abraham far off, and Lazarus in his bosom. ²⁴ And he cried and said, Father Abraham, have mercy on me, and send Lazarus, that he may dip the tip of his finger in water, and cool my tongue; for I am tormented in this flame. ²⁵ But Abraham said, Son, remember that you in your lifetime received your good things, and likewise Lazarus evil things: but now he is comforted, and you are tormented. ²⁶ And besides all this, between us and you there is a great gulf fixed: so that they who would pass from here to you cannot; neither can they pass to us, that would come from there.

³¹ So let all your enemies perish, O LORD: but let them that love him be as the sun when it goes forth in its might. And the land had rest forty years.

²⁷ And he said, If the LORD does not help you, how shall I help you? out of the barnfloor, or out of the winepress?

¹ [To the Chief Musician. A Psalm or Song of David.] Let God arise, let his enemies be scattered: let them also that hate him flee before him. ² As smoke is driven away, so drive them away: as wax melts before the fire, so let the wicked perish at the presence of God. ³ But let the righteous be glad; let them rejoice before God: yea, let them exceedingly rejoice.

⁵ The Lord was as an enemy: he has swallowed up Israel, he has swallowed up all her palaces: he has destroyed his strongholds, and has increased in the daughter of Judah mourning and lamentation.

²⁰ Rejoice over her, you heaven, and you holy apostles and prophets; for God has avenged you on her.

²⁴ And in her was found the blood of prophets, and of saints, and of all that were slain upon the earth.

¹³ And Samuel said to Saul, You have done foolishly: you have not kept the commandment of the LORD your God, which he commanded you: for now would the LORD have established your kingdom upon Israel forever. ¹⁴ But now your kingdom shall not continue: the LORD has sought him a man after his own heart, and the LORD has commanded him to be ruler over his people, because you have not kept that which the LORD commanded you.

²⁷ And as Samuel turned about to go away, he laid hold upon the skirt of his mantle, and it tore. ²⁸ And Samuel said unto him, The LORD has torn the kingdom of Israel from you this day, and has given it to a neighbor of yours, who is better than you. ²⁹ And also the Strength of Israel will not lie nor repent: for he is not a man, that he should repent.

¹³ Then Samuel took the horn of oil, and anointed him in the midst of his brethren: and the spirit of the LORD came upon David from that day forward. So Samuel rose up, and went to Ramah.

²⁰ And now, behold, I know well that you shall surely be king, and that the kingdom of Israel shall be established in your hand.

⁴ The LORD has made all things for himself: yea, even the wicked for the day of evil.

⁹ And Saul said, Bring here a burnt offering to me, and peace offerings. And he offered the burnt offering.

⁹ But Saul and the people spared Agag, and the best of the sheep, and of the oxen, and of the fatlings, and the lambs, and all that was good, and would not utterly destroy them: but everything that was despised and worthless, that they destroyed utterly.

²⁰ And Saul said unto Samuel, Yea, I have obeyed the voice of the LORD, and have gone the way which the LORD sent me, and have brought Agag the king of Amalek, and have utterly destroyed the Amalekites.

²³ For rebellion is as the sin of witchcraft, and stubbornness is as iniquity and idolatry. Because you have rejected the word of the LORD, he has also rejected you from being king. ²⁴ And Saul said unto Samuel, I have sinned: for I have transgressed the commandment of the LORD, and your words: because I feared the people, and obeyed their voice. ²⁵ Now therefore, I pray you, pardon my sin, and turn again with me, that I may worship the LORD. ²⁶ And Samuel said unto Saul, I will not return with you: for you have rejected the word of the LORD, and the LORD has rejected you from being king over Israel.

⁴² And he said unto him, Thus says the LORD, Because you have let go out of your hand a man whom I appointed to utter destruction, therefore your life shall go for his life, and your people for his people.

²¹ These things have you done, and I kept silence; you thought that I was altogether such a one as yourself: but I will rebuke you, and set them in order before your eyes. ²² Now consider this, you that forget God, lest I tear you in pieces, and there be none to deliver.

¹⁰ Cursed is he that does the work of the LORD deceitfully, and cursed is he that keeps back his sword from blood.

¹⁸ Behold, tomorrow about this time I will cause it to rain a very grievous hail, such as has not been in Egypt since the foundation of it even until now.

²⁵ But if you shall still do wickedly, you shall be consumed, both you and your king.

¹ Now the Philistines fought against Israel: and the men of Israel fled from before the Philistines, and fell down slain in mount Gilboa. ² And the Philistines followed close upon Saul and upon his sons; and the Philistines slew Jonathan, and Abinadab, and Malchishua, Saul's sons. ³ And the battle went hard against Saul, and the archers hit him; and he was severely wounded of the archers. ⁴ Then said Saul unto his armorbearer, Draw your sword, and thrust me through with it; lest these uncircumcised come and thrust me through, and abuse me. But his armorbearer would not; for he was greatly afraid. Therefore Saul took a sword, and fell upon it. ⁵ And when his armorbearer saw that Saul was dead, he fell likewise upon his sword, and died with him. ⁶ So Saul died, and his three sons, and his armorbearer, and all his men, that same day together.

²⁰ And the LORD said, Who shall persuade Ahab, that he may go up and fall at Ramoth-gilead? And one said on this manner, and another said on that manner.

²⁸ And Micaiah said, If you return at all in peace, the LORD has not spoken by me. And he said, Hearken, O people, every one of you.

¹⁶ Therefore thus says the LORD; Behold, I will cast you from off the face of the earth: this year you shall die, because you have taught rebellion against the LORD. ¹⁷ So Hananiah the prophet died the same year in the seventh month.

²⁵ And this is the writing that was written, MENE, MENE, TEKEL, UPHARSIN. ²⁶ This is the interpretation of the matter: MENE; God has numbered your kingdom, and finished it. ²⁷ TEKEL; you are weighed in the balances, and are found wanting. ²⁸ PERES; Your kingdom is divided, and given to the Medes and Persians.

²⁴ The Son of man goes as it is written of him: but woe unto that man by whom the Son of man is betrayed! It would have been good for that man if he had not been born.

⁵ And Ananias hearing these words fell down, and died: and great fear came on all them that heard these things.

⁹ Then Peter said unto her, How is it that you have agreed together to tempt the Spirit of the Lord? behold, the feet of them who have buried your husband are at the door, and shall carry you out. ¹⁰ Then she fell down immediately at his feet, and died: and the young men came in, and found her dead, and, carrying her forth, buried her by her husband.

³⁷ But it came to pass in the morning, when the wine was gone out of Nabal, and his wife had told him these things, that his heart died within him, and he became as a stone.

⁵ And when Saul saw the host of the Philistines, he was afraid, and his heart greatly trembled.

²⁰ The wicked man travails with pain all his days, and the number of years is hidden for the oppressor. ²¹ A dreadful sound is in his ears: in prosperity the destroyer shall come upon him. ²² He believes not that he shall return out of darkness, and he is waited for by the sword. ²³ He wanders abroad for bread, saying, Where is it? he knows that the day of darkness is ready at his hand. ²⁴ Trouble and anguish shall make him afraid; they shall prevail against him, as a king ready for battle.

² How have you helped him that is without power? how save you the arm that has no strength?

³ And when I saw that you delivered me not, I put my life in my hands, and passed over against the children of Ammon, and the LORD delivered them into my hand: why then are you come up unto me this day, to fight against me?

⁵ For he did put his life in his hand, and slew the Philistine, and the LORD worked a great salvation for all Israel: you saw it, and did rejoice: therefore then will you sin against innocent blood, to slay David without a cause?

¹⁴ Why do I take my flesh in my teeth, and put my life in my hand?

⁴ And Ahab came into his house sullen and displeased because of the word which Naboth the Jezreelite had spoken to him: for he had said, I will not give you the inheritance of my fathers. And he laid himself down upon his bed, and turned away his face, and would eat no bread.

¹³ And his servants came near, and spoke unto him, and said, My father, if the prophet had bid you do some great thing, would you not have done it? how much rather then, when he says to you, Wash, and be clean?

²⁰ As he that takes away a garment in cold weather, and as vinegar upon soda, so is he that sings songs to a heavy heart.

²³ And the lord said unto the servant, Go out into the highways and hedges, and compel them to come in, that my house may be filled.

²⁹ But they constrained him, saying, Abide with us: for it is toward evening, and the day is far spent. And he went in to tarry with them.

¹⁵ And when she was baptized, and her household, she besought us, saying, If you have judged me to be faithful to the Lord, come into my house, and abide there. And she prevailed upon us.

¹⁴ For the love of Christ constrains us; because we thus judge, that if one died for all, then were all dead:

⁷ And Abraham ran unto the herd, and fetched a calf tender and good, and gave it unto a young man; and he hastened to dress it. ⁸ And he took butter, and milk, and the calf which he had dressed, and set it before them; and he stood by them under the tree, and they did eat.

²³ And bring here the fatted calf, and kill it; and let us eat, and be merry:
