⁸ Likewise must the deacons be grave, not double tongued, not given to much wine, not greedy of dishonest gain;

⁹ Do not drink wine nor strong drink, you, nor your sons with you, when you go into the tabernacle of meeting, lest you die: it shall be a statute forever throughout your generations:

⁹ For there is no faithfulness in their mouth; their inward part is pure wickedness; their throat is an open sepulcher; they flatter with their tongue.

² They speak vanity every one with his neighbor: with flattering lips and with a double heart do they speak.

¹⁹ You give your mouth to evil, and your tongue frames deceit.

² Your tongue devises evil; like a sharp razor, working deceitfully.

²¹ Neither shall any priest drink wine, when they enter into the inner court.

³ Therefore, brethren, pick out from among you seven men of honest report, full of the Holy Spirit and wisdom, whom we may appoint over this business. ⁴ But we will give ourselves continually to prayer, and to the ministry of the word. ⁵ And the saying pleased the whole multitude: and they chose Stephen, a man full of faith and of the Holy Spirit, and Philip, and Prochorus, and Nicanor, and Timon, and Parmenas, and Nicolaus a proselyte of Antioch: ⁶ Whom they set before the apostles: and when they had prayed, they laid their hands on them.

³ Not given to wine, not violent, not greedy of money; but patient, not a brawler, not covetous;

¹² Let the deacons be the husbands of one wife, ruling their children and their own houses well.

²³ Drink no longer water only, but use a little wine for your stomach's sake and your frequent illnesses.

⁷ For a bishop must be blameless, as the steward of God; not self-willed, not soon angry, not given to wine, not violent, not given to dishonest gain;

³ The aged women likewise, that they be in behavior as becomes holiness, not false accusers, not given to much wine, teachers of good things;

¹⁰ Out of the same mouth proceeds blessing and cursing. My brethren, these things ought not so to be.

² Feed the flock of God which is among you, taking the oversight thereof, not by constraint, but willingly; not for dishonest gain, but of a ready mind;
