¹ Is there not an appointed time to man upon earth? are not his days also like the days of a hireling? ² As a servant earnestly desires the shadow, and as a hireling looks for the reward of his work: ³ So am I made to possess months of vanity, and wearisome nights are appointed to me. ⁴ When I lie down, I say, When shall I arise, and the night be gone? and I am full of tossings to and fro unto the dawning of the day. ⁵ My flesh is clothed with worms and clods of dust; my skin is broken, and become loathsome. ⁶ My days are swifter than a weaver’s shuttle, and are spent without hope. ⁷ O remember that my life is a breath: my eye shall no more see good. ⁸ The eye of him that has seen me shall see me no more: your eyes are upon me, and I am not. ⁹ As the cloud is consumed and vanishes away: so he that goes down to the grave shall come up no more. ¹⁰ He shall return no more to his house, neither shall his place know him any more. ¹¹ Therefore I will not restrain my mouth; I will speak in the anguish of my spirit; I will complain in the bitterness of my soul. ¹² Am I a sea, or a sea monster, that you set a watch over me? ¹³ When I say, My bed shall comfort me, my couch shall ease my complaint; ¹⁴ Then you scare me with dreams, and terrify me through visions: ¹⁵ So that my soul chooses strangling, and death rather than my life. ¹⁶ I loathe it; I would not live always: let me alone; for my days are vanity. ¹⁷ What is man, that you should magnify him? and that you should set your heart upon him? ¹⁸ And that you should visit him every morning, and test him every moment? ¹⁹ How long will you not look away from me, nor let me alone till I swallow down my spittle? ²⁰ I have sinned; what shall I do unto you, O you preserver of men? why have you set me as a mark against you, so that I am a burden to myself? ²¹ And why do you not pardon my transgression, and take away my iniquity? for now shall I sleep in the dust; and you shall seek me in the morning, but I shall not be.

⁵⁰ And he shall reckon with him that bought him from the year that he was sold to him unto the year of jubilee: and the price of his release shall be according unto the number of years, according to the time of a hired servant shall it be with him.

¹⁸ It shall not seem hard unto you, when you send him away free from you; for he has been worth a double hired servant to you, in serving you six years: and the LORD your God shall bless you in all that you do.

⁷ Yet man is born unto trouble, as the sparks fly upward.

⁵ Seeing his days are determined, the number of his months are with you, you have appointed his bounds that he cannot pass; ⁶ Turn from him, that he may rest, till he shall accomplish, as a hireling, his day.

¹³ O that you would hide me in the grave, that you would conceal me, until your wrath is past, that you would appoint me a set time, and remember me! ¹⁴ If a man dies, shall he live again? all the days of my appointed time will I wait, till my change comes.

⁴ LORD, make me to know my end, and the measure of my days, what it is; that I may know how frail I am.

⁸ There is no man that has power over the spirit to retain the spirit; neither has he power in the day of death: and there is no release from that war; neither shall wickedness deliver those that are given to it.

¹⁶ For thus has the Lord said unto me, Within a year, according to the years of a hireling, and all the glory of Kedar shall fail:

⁵ Go, and say to Hezekiah, Thus says the LORD, the God of David your father, I have heard your prayer, I have seen your tears: behold, I will add unto your days fifteen years.

² Speak tenderly to Jerusalem, and cry unto her, that her warfare is accomplished, that her iniquity is pardoned: for she has received of the LORD's hand double for all her sins.

¹ For the kingdom of heaven is like unto a man that is a householder, who went out early in the morning to hire laborers for his vineyard. ² And when he had agreed with the laborers for a penny a day, he sent them into his vineyard. ³ And he went out about the third hour, and saw others standing idle in the marketplace, ⁴ And said unto them; Go you also into the vineyard, and whatsoever is right I will give you. And they went their way. ⁵ Again he went out about the sixth and ninth hour, and did likewise. ⁶ And about the eleventh hour he went out, and found others standing idle, and said unto them, Why stand you here all the day idle? ⁷ They said unto him, Because no man has hired us. He said unto them, Go you also into the vineyard; and whatsoever is right, that shall you receive. ⁸ So when evening came, the lord of the vineyard said unto his steward, Call the laborers, and give them their hire, beginning from the last unto the first. ⁹ And when they came that were hired about the eleventh hour, they received every man a penny. ¹⁰ But when the first came, they supposed that they should have received more; and they likewise received every man a penny. ¹¹ And when they had received it, they murmured against the owner of the house, ¹² Saying, These last have worked but one hour, and you have made them equal unto us, who have borne the burden and heat of the day. ¹³ But he answered one of them, and said, Friend, I do you no wrong: did not you agree with me for a penny? ¹⁴ Take what is yours, and go your way: I will give unto this last, even as unto you. ¹⁵ Is it not lawful for me to do what I will with my own? Is your eye evil, because I am good?

⁹ Jesus answered, Are there not twelve hours in the day? If any man walks in the day, he stumbles not, because he sees the light of this world. ¹⁰ But if a man walks in the night, he stumbles, because there is no light in him.

¹³ You shall not defraud your neighbor, neither rob him: the wages of him that is hired shall not abide with you all night until the morning.

¹⁵ Each day you shall give him his hire, neither shall the sun go down upon it; for he is poor, and sets his heart upon it: lest he cry against you unto the LORD, and it be sin unto you.

¹³¹ I opened my mouth, and panted: for I longed for your commandments.

⁶ I stretch forth my hands unto you: my soul thirsts after you, as a thirsty land. Selah.

⁴ Prepare you war against her; arise, and let us go up at noon. Woe unto us! for the day goes away, for the shadows of the evening are lengthening.

⁵ And I will come near to you for judgment; and I will be a swift witness against the sorcerers, and against the adulterers, and against false swearers, and against those that oppress the hireling in his wages, the widow, and the fatherless, and that turn aside the sojourner from his right, and fear not me, says the LORD of hosts.

⁴ Behold, the hire of the laborers who have reaped down your fields, which is of you kept back by fraud, cries: and the cries of them who have reaped are entered into the ears of the Lord of hosts.

⁷ But now he has made me weary: you have made desolate all my company.

² Oh that I were as in months past, as in the days when God preserved me;

⁶ I am weary with my groaning; all the night make I my bed wet with tears; I water my couch with my tears.

⁵ Behold, you have made my days as a handbreadth; and my age is as nothing before you: verily every man at his best state is altogether vanity. Selah.

¹⁴ I have seen all the works that are done under the sun; and, behold, all is vanity and like grasping the wind.

⁶⁷ In the morning you shall say, Would God it were evening! and at evening you shall say, Would God it were morning! because of the fear of your heart by which you shall fear, and because of the sight of your eyes which you shall see.

¹³ When I say, My bed shall comfort me, my couch shall ease my complaint; ¹⁴ Then you scare me with dreams, and terrify me through visions:

¹² They change the night into day: the light is short because of darkness.

¹⁷ My bones are pierced in me in the night season: and my sinews take no rest.

⁴ You hold my eyes from closing: I am so troubled that I cannot speak.

²³ I am gone like the shadow when it declines: I am shaken off like the locust.

⁶ My soul waits for the Lord more than they that watch for the morning: I say, more than they that watch for the morning.

¹¹ O you afflicted, tossed with tempest, and not comforted, behold, I will lay your stones with colorful gems, and lay your foundations with sapphires.

⁷ So went Satan forth from the presence of the LORD, and struck Job with painful boils from the sole of his foot unto the crown of his head. ⁸ And he took himself a potsherd to scrape himself with; and he sat down among the ashes.

³¹ Yet shall you plunge me in the ditch, and my own clothes shall abhor me.

¹⁴ I have said to corruption, You are my father: to the worm, You are my mother, and my sister.

²⁶ And though after my skin is thus destroyed, yet in my flesh shall I see God:

²⁰ The womb shall forget him; the worm shall feed sweetly on him; he shall be no more remembered; and wickedness shall be broken as a tree.

¹⁸ By the great force of my disease is my garment changed: it binds me about as the collar of my coat. ¹⁹ He has cast me into the mire, and I am become like dust and ashes.

⁵ My wounds are foul and are corrupt because of my foolishness. ⁶ I am troubled; I am bowed down greatly; I go mourning all the day long. ⁷ For my loins are filled with a loathsome disease: and there is no soundness in my flesh.

⁶ From the sole of the foot even unto the head there is no soundness in it; but wounds, and bruises, and putrefying sores: they have not been closed, neither bound up, neither soothed with ointment.

¹¹ Your pomp is brought down to the grave, and the sound of your harps: the maggot is spread under you, and the worms cover you.

²⁴ And they shall go forth, and look upon the corpses of the men that have transgressed against me: for their worm shall not die, neither shall their fire be quenched; and they shall be an abhorrence unto all flesh.

⁴³ And there shall you remember your ways, and all your doings, in which you have been defiled; and you shall loathe yourselves in your own sight for all your evils that you have committed.

²³ And immediately the angel of the Lord smote him, because he gave not God the glory: and he was eaten of worms, and died.

¹¹ What is my strength, that I should hope? and what is my end, that I should prolong my life?

²⁵ Now my days are swifter than a runner: they flee away, they see no good.

¹⁵ Though he slay me, yet will I trust in him: but I will defend my own ways before him.

²² When a few years have come, then I shall go the way where I shall not return.

¹¹ My days are past, my purposes are broken off, even the thoughts of my heart.

¹⁵ And where is now my hope? as for my hope, who shall see it?

⁵ You carry them away as with a flood; they are like a sleep: in the morning they are like grass which grows up. ⁶ In the morning it flourishes, and grows up; in the evening it is cut down, and withers.

¹¹ My days are like a shadow that declines; and I am withered like grass.

¹⁵ As for man, his days are as grass: as a flower of the field, so he flourishes. ¹⁶ For the wind passes over it, and it is gone; and the place there shall know it no more.

⁴ Man is like to vanity: his days are as a shadow that passes away.

³² The wicked is driven away in his wickedness: but the righteous has hope in his death.

¹² My age is departed, and is removed from me as a shepherd's tent: I have cut off like a weaver my life: he will cut me off from the loom: from day even to night will you make an end of me. ¹³ I considered till morning, that, as a lion, so will he break all my bones: from day even to night will you make an end of me.

⁶ The voice said, } Cry. { And he said, What shall I cry? {} All flesh is grass, and all its loveliness is as the flower of the field: ⁷ The grass withers, the flower fades: because the breath of the LORD blows upon it: surely the people are grass.

²⁵ Withhold your foot from being unshod, and your throat from thirst: but you said, There is no hope: no; for I have loved strangers, and after them will I go.

¹² That at that time you were without Christ, being aliens from the commonwealth of Israel, and strangers from the covenants of promise, having no hope, and without God in the world:

¹¹ For the sun is no sooner risen with a burning heat, but it withers the grass, and its flower falls, and the beauty of the appearance of it perishes: so also shall the rich man fade away in his ways.

¹⁴ Whereas you know not what shall be tomorrow. For what is your life? It is even a vapor, that appears for a little time, and then vanishes away.

¹³ Therefore gird up the loins of your mind, be sober, and hope to the end for the grace that is to be brought unto you at the revelation of Jesus Christ;

²⁴ For all flesh is as grass, and all the glory of man as the flower of grass. The grass withers, and the flower thereof falls away:

³⁶ And Jacob their father said unto them, Me have you bereaved of my children: Joseph is not, and Simeon is not, and you will take Benjamin away: all these things are against me.

⁸ Remember, I beseech you, the word that you commanded your servant Moses, saying, If you transgress, I will scatter you abroad among the nations:

⁹ Remember, I beseech you, that you have made me as the clay; and will you bring me into dust again?

²¹ Before I go where I shall not return, even to the land of darkness and the shadow of death; ²² A land of darkness, as darkness itself; and of the shadow of death, without any order, and where the light is as darkness.

¹⁸ Remember this, that the enemy has reproached, O LORD, and that the foolish people have blasphemed your name.

²² Arise, O God, plead your own cause: remember how the foolish man reproaches you daily.

³⁹ For he remembered that they were but flesh; a wind that passes away, and comes not again.

⁴⁷ Remember how short my time is: why have you made all men in vain?

⁵⁰ Remember, Lord, the reproach of your servants; how I do bear in my bosom the reproach of all the mighty people;

¹⁵ O LORD, you know: remember me, and visit me, and avenge me of my persecutors; take me not away in your longsuffering: know that for your sake I have suffered rebuke.

¹⁸ If he is destroyed from his place, then it will deny him, saying, I have not seen you.

²⁷ You put my feet also in the stocks, and watch closely all my paths; you set a bound to the soles of my feet.

³ And do you open your eyes upon such a one, and bring me into judgment with you?

⁹ The eye also which saw him shall see him no more; neither shall his place any more behold him.

³⁶ Yet he passed away, and, lo, he was not: yea, I sought him, but he could not be found.

¹¹ When you with rebukes do correct man for iniquity, you make his beauty melt away like a moth: surely every man is vanity. Selah.

⁸ You have set our iniquities before you, our secret sins in the light of your countenance. ⁹ For all our days are passed away in your wrath: we spend our years as a tale that is told.

²³ But now he is dead, why should I fast? can I bring him back again? I shall go to him, but he shall not return to me.

¹⁴ For we must needs die, and are as water spilt on the ground, which cannot be gathered up again; neither does God respect any person: yet does he devise means, that his banished one be not expelled from him.

²¹ Before I go where I shall not return, even to the land of darkness and the shadow of death;

⁸ It is as high as heaven; what can you do? deeper than Sheol; what can you know?

¹⁰ But man dies, and wastes away: yea, man expires, and where is he? ¹¹ As the waters fail from the sea, and the river decays and dries up: ¹² So man lies down, and rises not: till the heavens be no more, they shall not awake, nor be raised out of their sleep.

¹⁵ Terrors are turned upon me: they pursue my honor as the wind: and my welfare passes away as a cloud.

¹¹ Also with moisture he loads the thick cloud: he scatters his bright cloud:

¹³ O spare me, that I may recover strength, before I go away, and be no more.

¹¹ I said, I shall not see the LORD, even the LORD, in the land of the living: I shall behold man no more with the inhabitants of the world.

²¹ The east wind carries him away, and he is gone: and as a storm hurls him out of his place.

²³ Men shall clap their hands at him, and shall hiss him out of his place.

¹⁶ For the wind passes over it, and it is gone; and the place there shall know it no more.

²¹ And they said one to another, We are verily guilty concerning our brother, in that we saw the anguish of his soul, when he besought us, and we would not hear; therefore is this distress come upon us.

¹⁰ And she was in bitterness of soul, and prayed unto the LORD, and wept bitterly.

²⁷ And when she came to the man of God at the mountain, she caught him by the feet: but Gehazi came near to thrust her away. And the man of God said, Let her alone; for her soul is bitter within her: and the LORD has hid it from me, and has not told me. ²⁸ Then she said, Did I desire a son of my lord? did I not say, Do not deceive me?

²⁶ Do you intend to reprove words, and the speeches of one that is desperate, which are as wind?

¹ My soul is weary of my life; I will leave my complaint upon myself; I will speak in the bitterness of my soul.

¹⁵ If I am wicked, woe unto me; and if I am righteous, yet can I not lift up my head. I am full of disgrace; therefore see my affliction;

¹³ Hold your peace, let me alone, that I may speak, and let come on me what will.

⁶ Though I speak, my grief is not relieved: and though I forbear, how am I eased?

³ Bear with me that I may speak; and after that I have spoken, mock on. ⁴ As for me, is my complaint to man? and if it were so, why should not my spirit be troubled?

²⁵ And another dies in the bitterness of his soul, and never eats with pleasure.

³ My heart was hot within me, while I was meditating the fire burned: then spoke I with my tongue,

⁹ I have preached righteousness in the great congregation: lo, I have not restrained my lips, O LORD, you know.

¹⁵ What shall I say? he has both spoken unto me, and he himself has done it: I shall go softly all my years in the bitterness of my soul.

¹⁷ Behold, for my peace I had great bitterness: but you have in love to my soul delivered it from the pit of corruption: for you have cast all my sins behind your back.

³⁷ And he took with him Peter and the two sons of Zebedee, and began to be sorrowful and very distressed. ³⁸ Then said he unto them, My soul is exceedingly sorrowful, even unto death: tarry you here, and watch with me.

⁴⁴ And being in agony he prayed more earnestly: and his sweat was as it were great drops of blood falling down to the ground.

⁴ For out of much affliction and anguish of heart I wrote unto you with many tears; not that you should be grieved, but that you might know the love which I have more abundantly unto you.

¹⁷ What is man, that you should magnify him? and that you should set your heart upon him?

⁶ On what are its foundations fastened? or who laid its cornerstone; ⁷ When the morning stars sang together, and all the sons of God shouted for joy? ⁸ Or who shut up the sea with doors, when it broke forth, as if it had issued out of the womb? ⁹ When I made the clouds its garment, and thick darkness its swaddling band, ¹⁰ And prescribed bounds for it, and set bars and doors, ¹¹ And said, Thus far shall you come, but no farther: and here shall your proud waves be stopped?

¹ Can you draw out leviathan with a hook? or his tongue with a cord which you let down? ² Can you put a rope in his nose? or pierce his jaw through with a hook? ³ Will he make many supplications unto you? will he speak soft words unto you? ⁴ Will he make a covenant with you? will you take him for a servant forever? ⁵ Will you play with him as with a bird? or will you leash him for your maidens? ⁶ Shall your companions make a banquet of him? shall they apportion him among the merchants? ⁷ Can you fill his skin with harpoons? or his head with fish spears? ⁸ Lay your hand upon him, remember the battle, do no more. ⁹ Behold, the hope of subduing him is in vain: shall one not be cast down even at the sight of him? ¹⁰ None is so fierce that would dare stir him up: who then is able to stand before me? ¹¹ Who has given to me, that I should repay him? whatsoever is under the whole heaven is mine. ¹² I will not conceal his limbs, nor his power, nor his graceful proportion. ¹³ Who can remove the face of his garment? or who can approach him with a double bridle? ¹⁴ Who can open the doors of his face? his teeth are terrible all around. ¹⁵ His scales are his pride, shut up together as with a close seal. ¹⁶ One is so near to another, that no air can come between them. ¹⁷ They are joined one to another, they stick together, that they cannot be parted. ¹⁸ By his sneezings a light flashes, and his eyes are like the eyelids of the morning. ¹⁹ Out of his mouth go burning lamps, and sparks of fire leap out. ²⁰ Out of his nostrils goes smoke, as out of a boiling pot or caldron. ²¹ His breath kindles coals, and a flame goes out of his mouth. ²² In his neck remains strength, and sorrow is turned into dancing before him. ²³ The folds of his flesh are joined together: they are firm on him; they cannot be moved. ²⁴ His heart is as firm as a stone; yea, as hard as a piece of the lower millstone. ²⁵ When he raises up himself, the mighty are afraid: because of his crashings they are beside themselves. ²⁶ The sword of him that reaches him cannot avail: neither the spear, the dart, nor the javelin. ²⁷ He regards iron as straw, and bronze as rotten wood. ²⁸ The arrow cannot make him flee: clingstones with him are turned into stubble. ²⁹ Darts are counted as straw: he laughs at the threat of a javelin. ³⁰ His undersides are like sharp stones: he spreads sharp pointed marks upon the mire. ³¹ He makes the deep boil like a pot: he makes the sea like a pot of ointment. ³² He leaves a path shining after him; one would think the deep to have white hair. ³³ Upon earth there is not his like, which is made without fear. ³⁴ He beholds every high thing: he is a king over all the children of pride.

⁷ He has hedged me in, that I cannot get out: he has made my chain heavy.

² Son of man, take up a lamentation for Pharaoh king of Egypt, and say unto him, You are like a young lion of the nations, and you are as a monster in the seas: and you came forth with your rivers, and troubled the waters with your feet, and fouled their rivers. ³ Thus says the Lord GOD; I will therefore spread out my net over you with a company of many people; and they shall bring you up in my net.

⁵ And they dreamed a dream both of them, each man his dream in one night, each man according to the interpretation of his dream, the butler and the baker of the king of Egypt, who were bound in the prison. ⁶ And Joseph came in unto them in the morning, and looked upon them, and, behold, they were sad. ⁷ And he asked Pharaoh's officers that were with him in custody in his lord's house, saying, Why do you look so sad today?

⁸ And it came to pass in the morning that his spirit was troubled; and he sent and called for all the magicians of Egypt, and all the wise men thereof: and Pharaoh told them his dreams; but there was none that could interpret them unto Pharaoh.

¹³ And when Gideon was come, behold, there was a man that told a dream unto his fellow, and said, Behold, I dreamed a dream, and, lo, a cake of barley bread tumbled into the host of Midian, and came unto a tent, and struck it so that it fell, and overturned it, that the tent lay flat. ¹⁴ And his fellow answered and said, This is nothing else except the sword of Gideon the son of Joash, a man of Israel: for into his hand has God delivered Midian, and all the host.

¹ And in the second year of the reign of Nebuchadnezzar Nebuchadnezzar dreamed dreams, by which his spirit was troubled, and his sleep went from him.

¹⁹ When he was sat down on the judgment seat, his wife sent unto him, saying, Have nothing to do with that just man: for I have suffered many things this day in a dream because of him.

²³ And when Ahithophel saw that his counsel was not followed, he saddled his donkey, and arose, and got him home to his house, to his city, and put his household in order, and hanged himself, and died, and was buried in the sepulcher of his father.

⁵ And he cast down the pieces of silver in the temple, and departed, and went and hanged himself.

⁴⁶ And Rebekah said to Isaac, I am weary of my life because of the daughters of Heth: if Jacob takes a wife of the daughters of Heth, such as these who are of the daughters of the land, what good shall my life do me?

⁴ But he himself went a day’s journey into the wilderness, and came and sat down under a juniper tree: and he requested for himself that he might die; and said, It is enough; now, O LORD, take away my life; for I am not better than my fathers.

²⁰ Therefore is light given to him that is in misery, and life unto the bitter in soul; ²¹ Who long for death, but it comes not; and dig for it more than for hidden treasures; ²² Who rejoice exceedingly, and are glad, when they can find the grave?

⁹ Even that it would please God to destroy me; that he would let loose his hand, and cut me off!

²¹ Though I were blameless, yet would I not know my soul: I would despise my life.

²⁰ Are not my days few? cease then, and let me alone, that I may take comfort a little,

⁶ Turn from him, that he may rest, till he shall accomplish, as a hireling, his day.

¹⁰ Remove your scourge away from me: I am consumed by the blow of your hand.

⁹ Surely men of low degree are vanity, and men of high degree are a lie: if laid on the balance, they are altogether lighter than vanity.

³³ Therefore their days did he consume in vanity, and their years in trouble.

¹¹ Since there are many things that increase vanity, how is man the better? ¹² For who knows what is good for man in this life, all the days of his vain life which he spends like a shadow? for who can tell a man what shall be after him under the sun?

³ Therefore now, O LORD, take, I beseech you, my life from me; for it is better for me to die than to live.

⁸ And it came to pass, when the sun did arise, that God prepared a vehement east wind; and the sun beat upon the head of Jonah, so that he fainted, and wished in himself to die, and said, It is better for me to die than to live.

¹⁴ After whom is the king of Israel come out? after whom do you pursue? after a dead dog, after a flea.

¹² Am I a sea, or a sea monster, that you set a watch over me?

¹⁴ If he should set his heart upon man, if he should gather unto himself his spirit and his breath; ¹⁵ All flesh would perish together, and man would turn again unto dust.

⁴ What is man, that you are mindful of him? and the son of man, that you visit him?

³ LORD, what is man, that you take knowledge of him! or the son of man, that you make account of him!

⁶ But one in a certain place testified, saying, What is man, that you are mindful of him? or the son of man, that you visit him?

¹ And it came to pass after these things, that God did test Abraham, and said unto him, Abraham: and he said, Behold, here am I.

⁵ You shall not bow down yourself to them, nor serve them: for I the LORD your God am a jealous God, visiting the iniquity of the fathers upon the children unto the third and fourth generation of them that hate me;

³⁴ Therefore now go, lead the people unto the place of which I have spoken unto you: behold, my Angel shall go before you: nevertheless in the day when I visit I will visit their sin upon them.

¹⁶ Who fed you in the wilderness with manna, which your fathers knew not, that he might humble you, and that he might test you, to do you good in the end;

¹⁴ They are dead, they shall not live; they are deceased, they shall not rise: therefore have you visited and destroyed them, and made all their memory to perish.

⁷ Therefore thus says the LORD of hosts, Behold, I will refine them, and test them; for how shall I deal with the daughter of my people?

¹⁰ Many shall be purified, and made white, and refined; but the wicked shall do wickedly: and none of the wicked shall understand; but the wise shall understand.

⁹ And I will bring the third part through the fire, and will refine them as silver is refined, and will test them as gold is tested: they shall call on my name, and I will hear them: I will say, They are my people: and they shall say, The LORD is my God.

⁷ That the trial of your faith, being much more precious than of gold that perishes, though it be tried with fire, might be found unto praise and honor and glory at the appearing of Jesus Christ:

¹⁸ He will not permit me to take my breath, but fills me with bitterness.

³ My soul is also greatly troubled: but you, O LORD, how long?

¹ [To the Chief Musician. A Psalm of David.] How long will you forget me, O LORD? forever? how long will you hide your face from me? ² How long shall I take counsel in my soul, having sorrow in my heart daily? how long shall my enemy be exalted over me? ³ Consider and hear me, O LORD my God: lighten my eyes, lest I sleep the sleep of death;

³ LORD, how long shall the wicked, how long shall the wicked triumph?

¹⁰ And they cried with a loud voice, saying, How long, O Lord, holy and true, do you not judge and avenge our blood on them that dwell on the earth?

⁶ You, even you, are LORD alone; you have made heaven, the heaven of heavens, with all their host, the earth, and all things that are therein, the seas, and all that is therein, and you preserve them all; and the host of heaven worships you.

²⁴ For my sighing comes before I eat, and my groanings are poured out like the waters.

⁴ For the arrows of the Almighty are within me, the poison thereof drinks up my spirit: the terrors of God do set themselves in array against me.

¹¹ Therefore I will not restrain my mouth; I will speak in the anguish of my spirit; I will complain in the bitterness of my soul. ¹² Am I a sea, or a sea monster, that you set a watch over me?

²⁹ If I am wicked, why then labor I in vain? ³⁰ If I wash myself with snow water, and make my hands ever so clean; ³¹ Yet shall you plunge me in the ditch, and my own clothes shall abhor me.

²⁶ For you write bitter things against me, and make me possess the iniquities of my youth.

¹⁶ For now you number my steps: do not watch over my sin.

¹² I was at ease, but he has broken me asunder: he has also taken me by my neck, and shaken me to pieces, and set me up for his mark. ¹³ His archers surround me, he slashes my kidneys asunder, and does not spare; he pours out my gall upon the ground. ¹⁴ He breaks me with breach upon breach, he runs upon me like a warrior.

⁵ Is not your wickedness great? and your iniquities without end?

³³ If I covered my transgressions as Adam, by hiding my iniquity in my bosom:

⁹ I am clean without transgression, I am innocent; neither is there iniquity in me.

²⁷ He looks upon men, and if any say, I have sinned, and perverted that which was right, and it profited me not;

⁶ If you sin, what do you accomplish against him? or if your transgressions are multiplied, what do you do unto him?

¹² Therefore shall you make them turn their back, when you shall make ready your arrows upon your strings toward their face.

⁶ Your righteousness is like the great mountains; your judgments are a great deep: O LORD, you preserve man and beast.

⁴ O LORD God of hosts, how long will you be angry against the prayer of your people?

¹² He has bent his bow, and set me as a mark for the arrow.

¹⁰ And David’s heart condemned him after he had numbered the people. And David said unto the LORD, I have sinned greatly in what I have done: and now, I beseech you, O LORD, take away the iniquity of your servant; for I have done very foolishly.

¹³ For now should I have lain still and been quiet, I should have slept: then would I have been at rest,

⁸ The eye of him that has seen me shall see me no more: your eyes are upon me, and I am not.

¹⁴ If I sin, then you mark me, and you will not acquit me from my iniquity.

²³ How many are my iniquities and sins? make me know my transgression and my sin. ²⁴ Why hide you your face, and hold me for your enemy?

³² Yet shall he be brought to the grave, and shall remain in the tomb. ³³ The clods of the valley shall be sweet unto him, and every man shall follow after him, as there are innumerable gone before him.

¹⁵ As for man, his days are as grass: as a flower of the field, so he flourishes.

⁷ Then shall the dust return to the earth as it was: and the spirit shall return unto God who gave it.

¹⁹ Your dead men shall live, together with my dead body shall they arise. Awake and sing, you that dwell in dust: for your dew is like the dew of herbs, and the earth shall cast out the dead.

⁹ Be not exceedingly angry, O LORD, neither remember iniquity forever: behold, see, we beseech you, we are all your people.

⁴² We have transgressed and have rebelled: you have not pardoned. ⁴³ You have covered with anger, and persecuted us: you have slain, you have not pitied. ⁴⁴ You have covered yourself with a cloud, that our prayer should not pass through.

²⁰ Why do you forget us forever, and forsake us for so long a time? ²¹ Turn us back to you, O LORD, and we shall be turned; renew our days as of old. ²² But you have utterly rejected us; you are very angry against us.

² And many of them that sleep in the dust of the earth shall awake, some to everlasting life, and some to shame and everlasting contempt.

² Take with you words, and turn to the LORD: say unto him, Take away all iniquity, and receive us graciously: so will we offer the sacrifices of our lips.

¹⁸ Who is a God like unto you, who pardons iniquity, and passes by the transgression of the remnant of his heritage? he retains not his anger forever, because he delights in mercy. ¹⁹ He will turn again, he will have compassion upon us; he will subdue our iniquities; and you will cast all their sins into the depths of the sea.

²⁹ The next day John saw Jesus coming unto him, and said, Behold the Lamb of God, who takes away the sin of the world.

¹⁴ Who gave himself for us, that he might redeem us from all iniquity, and purify unto himself a people for his own, zealous of good works.

⁹ If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins, and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness.

⁵ And you know that he was manifested to take away our sins; and in him is no sin.
