¹ Hear, you children, the instruction of a father, and attend to know understanding. ² For I give you good doctrine, forsake not my law. ³ For I was my father's son, tender and the only one in the sight of my mother. ⁴ He taught me also, and said unto me, Let your heart retain my words: keep my commandments, and live. ⁵ Get wisdom, get understanding: forget it not; neither turn away from the words of my mouth. ⁶ Forsake her not, and she shall preserve you: love her, and she shall keep you. ⁷ Wisdom is the principal thing; therefore get wisdom: and with all your getting get understanding. ⁸ Exalt her, and she shall promote you: she shall bring you to honor, when you do embrace her. ⁹ She shall give to your head an ornament of grace: a crown of glory shall she deliver to you. ¹⁰ Hear, O my son, and receive my sayings; and the years of your life shall be many. ¹¹ I have taught you in the way of wisdom; I have led you in right paths. ¹² When you go, your steps shall not be hindered; and when you run, you shall not stumble. ¹³ Take fast hold of instruction; let her not go: keep her; for she is your life. ¹⁴ Enter not into the path of the wicked, and go not in the way of evil men. ¹⁵ Avoid it, pass not by it, turn from it, and pass away. ¹⁶ For they sleep not, unless they have done mischief; and their sleep is taken away, unless they cause someone to fall. ¹⁷ For they eat the bread of wickedness, and drink the wine of violence. ¹⁸ But the path of the just is as the shining light, that shines more and more unto the perfect day. ¹⁹ The way of the wicked is as darkness: they know not at what they stumble. ²⁰ My son, attend to my words; incline your ear unto my sayings. ²¹ Let them not depart from your eyes; keep them in the midst of your heart. ²² For they are life unto those that find them, and health to all their flesh. ²³ Keep your heart with all diligence; for out of it are the issues of life. ²⁴ Put away from you a deceitful mouth, and perverse lips put far from you. ²⁵ Let your eyes look directly forward, and let your eyelids look straight before you. ²⁶ Ponder the path of your feet, and let all your ways be established. ²⁷ Turn not to the right hand nor to the left: remove your foot from evil.

¹¹ Come, you children, hearken unto me: I will teach you the fear of the LORD.

⁸ My son, hear the instruction of your father, and forsake not the law of your mother:

¹ My son, if you will receive my words, and lay up my commandments with you; ² So that you incline your ear unto wisdom, and apply your heart to understanding; ³ Yea, if you cry after knowledge, and lift up your voice for understanding; ⁴ If you seek her as silver, and search for her as for hid treasures; ⁵ Then shall you understand the fear of the LORD, and find the knowledge of God.

¹ My son, be attentive to my wisdom, and incline your ear to my understanding:

²⁰ My son, keep your father's commandment, and forsake not the law of your mother: ²¹ Bind them continually upon your heart, and tie them about your neck. ²² When you go, it shall lead you; when you sleep, it shall keep you; and when you awake, it shall talk with you. ²³ For the commandment is a lamp; and the law is light; and reproofs of instruction are the way of life:

⁴ Say unto wisdom, you are my sister; and call understanding your kinswoman:

³² Now therefore hearken unto me, O you children: for blessed are they that keep my ways. ³³ Hear instruction, and be wise, and refuse it not. ³⁴ Blessed is the man that hears me, watching daily at my gates, waiting at the posts of my doors. ³⁵ For whosoever finds me finds life, and shall obtain favor of the LORD. ³⁶ But he that sins against me wrongs his own soul: all they that hate me love death.

²⁰ Hear counsel, and receive instruction, that you may be wise in your latter days.

¹⁷ Bow down your ear, and hear the words of the wise, and apply your heart unto my knowledge.

¹¹ As you know how we exhorted and encouraged and charged every one of you, as a father does his children, ¹² That you would walk worthy of God, who has called you unto his kingdom and glory.

¹ Therefore we ought to give the more earnest heed to the things which we have heard, lest at any time we should let them slip.

² My teaching shall drop as the rain, my speech shall distil as the dew, as the small rain upon the tender herb, and as the showers upon the grass:

⁹ And you, Solomon my son, know you the God of your father, and serve him with a perfect heart and with a willing mind: for the LORD searches all hearts, and understands all the imaginations of the thoughts: if you seek him, he will be found of you; but if you forsake him, he will cast you off forever.

¹⁹ But if you turn away, and forsake my statutes and my commandments, which I have set before you, and shall go and serve other gods, and worship them;

⁴ For you have said, My doctrine is pure, and I am clean in your eyes.

³ My words shall be of the uprightness of my heart: and my lips shall utter knowledge clearly.

¹ [To the Chief Musician. A Psalm of the sons of Korah.] Hear this, all you people; give ear, all you inhabitants of the world: ² Both low and high, rich and poor, together. ³ My mouth shall speak of wisdom; and the meditation of my heart shall be of understanding.

³⁰ If his children forsake my law, and walk not in my judgments; ³¹ If they break my statutes, and keep not my commandments; ³² Then will I visit their transgression with the rod, and their iniquity with stripes.

⁶ Hear; for I will speak of excellent things; and from the opening of my lips shall come right things. ⁷ For my mouth shall speak truth; and wickedness is an abomination to my lips. ⁸ All the words of my mouth are in righteousness; there is nothing crooked or perverse in them. ⁹ They are all plain to him that understands, and right to them that find knowledge.

²⁰ Have not I written to you excellent things in counsels and knowledge, ²¹ That I might make you know the certainty of the words of truth; that you might answer the words of truth to them that send unto you?

¹⁶ Jesus answered them, and said, My doctrine is not mine, but his that sent me. ¹⁷ If any man will do his will, he shall know of the doctrine, whether it be of God, or whether I speak of myself.

⁶ If you put the brethren in remembrance of these things, you shall be a good minister of Jesus Christ, nourished up in the words of faith and of good doctrine, which you have attained.

⁹ Holding fast the faithful word as he has been taught, that he may be able by sound doctrine both to exhort and to refute the opposition.

²⁴ And David comforted Bath-sheba his wife, and went in unto her, and lay with her: and she bore a son, and he called his name Solomon: and the LORD loved him. ²⁵ And he sent by the hand of Nathan the prophet; and he called his name Jedidiah, because of the LORD.

¹³ Go and get in unto king David, and say unto him, Did not you, my lord, O king, swear unto your handmaid, saying, Assuredly Solomon your son shall reign after me, and he shall sit upon my throne? why then does Adonijah reign? ¹⁴ Behold, while you yet talk there with the king, I also will come in after you, and confirm your words. ¹⁵ And Bath-sheba went in unto the king into the chamber: and the king was very old; and Abishag the Shunammite ministered unto the king. ¹⁶ And Bath-sheba bowed, and knelt before the king. And the king said, What would you? ¹⁷ And she said unto him, My lord, you swore by the LORD your God unto your handmaid, saying, Assuredly Solomon your son shall reign after me, and he shall sit upon my throne.

⁵ And these were born unto him in Jerusalem; Shimea, and Shobab, and Nathan, and Solomon, four, of Bath-shua the daughter of Ammiel:

⁵ And David said, Solomon my son is young and tender, and the house that is to be built for the LORD must be exceedingly magnificent, of fame and of glory throughout all countries: I will therefore now make preparation for it. So David prepared abundantly before his death.

¹ Furthermore David the king said unto all the congregation, Solomon my son, whom alone God has chosen, is yet young and tender, and the work is great: for the palace is not for man, but for the LORD God.

²³ O LORD, I know that the way of man is not in himself: it is not in man who walks to direct his steps.

¹⁰ And I will pour upon the house of David, and upon the inhabitants of Jerusalem, the Spirit of grace and of supplications: and they shall look upon me whom they have pierced, and they shall mourn for him, as one mourns for his only son, and shall be in bitterness for him, as one that is in bitterness for his firstborn.

¹⁶ Be of the same mind one toward another. Mind not high things, but condescend to men of low estate. Be not wise in your own conceits.

¹⁹ For I know him, that he will command his children and his household after him, and they shall keep the way of the LORD, to do righteousness and justice; that the LORD may bring upon Abraham that which he has spoken of him.

³ According to the practices in the land of Egypt, wherein you dwelt, shall you not do: and according to the practices of the land of Canaan, where I bring you, shall you not do: neither shall you walk in their ordinances. ⁴ You shall do my ordinances, and keep my statutes, to walk therein: I am the LORD your God. ⁵ You shall therefore keep my statutes, and my judgments: which if a man do, he shall live in them: I am the LORD.

⁹ Only take heed to yourself, and keep your soul diligently, lest you forget the things which your eyes have seen, and lest they depart from your heart all the days of your life: but teach them to your sons, and your sons' sons;

⁶ And these words, which I command you this day, shall be in your heart:

¹¹ Now, my son, the LORD be with you; and prosper you, and build the house of the LORD your God, as he has said of you. ¹² Only the LORD give you wisdom and understanding, and give you charge concerning Israel, that you may keep the law of the LORD your God. ¹³ Then shall you prosper, if you take heed to fulfill the statutes and judgments which the LORD charged Moses with concerning Israel: be strong, and of good courage; dread not, nor be dismayed. ¹⁴ Now, behold, in my trouble I have prepared for the house of the LORD a hundred thousand talents of gold, and a thousand thousand talents of silver; and of bronze and iron beyond weighing; for it is in abundance: timber also and stone have I prepared; and you may add to it. ¹⁵ Moreover there are workmen with you in abundance, hewers and workers of stone and timber, and all manner of skillful men for every manner of work. ¹⁶ Of the gold, the silver, and the bronze, and the iron, there is no limit. Arise therefore, and begin working, and the LORD be with you.

¹¹ Your word have I hid in my heart, that I might not sin against you.

¹ My son, forget not my law; but let your heart keep my commandments:

² Keep my commandments, and live; and my law as the apple of your eye.

⁶ Train up a child in the way he should go: and when he is old, he will not depart from it.

³ Incline your ear, and come unto me: hear, and your soul shall live; and I will make an everlasting covenant with you, even the sure mercies of David.

⁵⁰ And I know that his commandment is life everlasting: whatsoever I speak therefore, even as the Father said unto me, so I speak.

⁴ And, you fathers, provoke not your children to wrath: but bring them up in the nurture and admonition of the Lord.

⁵ When I call to remembrance the unfeigned faith that is in you, which dwelt first in your grandmother Lois, and your mother Eunice; and I am persuaded in you also.

¹⁵ And that from a child you have known the holy scriptures, which are able to make you wise unto salvation through faith which is in Christ Jesus.

⁹ And being made perfect, he became the author of eternal salvation unto all them that obey him;

² And he did that which was right in the sight of the LORD, and walked in the ways of David his father, and turned aside neither to the right hand, nor to the left.

¹¹ My foot has held fast to his steps, his way have I kept, and not turned aside.

¹⁸ Our heart is not turned back, neither have our steps declined from your way;

⁵¹ The proud have had me greatly in derision: yet have I not turned from your law.

¹⁵⁷ Many are my persecutors and my enemies; yet do I not turn from your testimonies.

²² How long, you simple ones, will you love simplicity? and the scoffers delight in their scoffing, and fools hate knowledge? ²³ Turn you at my reproof: behold, I will pour out my spirit unto you, I will make known my words unto you.

² So that you incline your ear unto wisdom, and apply your heart to understanding; ³ Yea, if you cry after knowledge, and lift up your voice for understanding; ⁴ If you seek her as silver, and search for her as for hid treasures;

¹³ Happy is the man that finds wisdom, and the man that gets understanding. ¹⁴ For the gain from it is better than the gain from silver, and the profit thereof than fine gold. ¹⁵ She is more precious than rubies: and all the things you can desire are not to be compared unto her. ¹⁶ Length of days is in her right hand; and in her left hand riches and honor. ¹⁷ Her ways are ways of pleasantness, and all her paths are peace. ¹⁸ She is a tree of life to them that lay hold upon her: and happy is everyone that retains her.

⁵ O you simple, understand wisdom: and, you fools, be of an understanding heart.

¹⁶ How much better is it to get wisdom than gold! and to get understanding rather to be chosen than silver!

¹⁶ Why is there a price in the hand of a fool to get wisdom, seeing he has no heart for it?

¹ A man, having separated himself, seeks his own desire, and rages against all sound wisdom.

⁸ He that gets wisdom loves his own soul: he that keeps understanding shall find good.

²³ Buy the truth, and sell it not; also wisdom, and instruction, and understanding.

⁵ If any of you lacks wisdom, let him ask of God, who gives to all men liberally, and reproaches not; and it shall be given him.

¹⁰ When wisdom enters into your heart, and knowledge is pleasant unto your soul; ¹¹ Discretion shall preserve you, understanding shall keep you: ¹² To deliver you from the way of the evil man, from the man that speaks perverse things;

²¹ Let them not depart from your eyes; keep them in the midst of your heart. ²² For they are life unto those that find them, and health to all their flesh.

¹⁷ That Christ may dwell in your hearts by faith; that you, being rooted and grounded in love,

¹⁰ And with all deception of unrighteousness in them that perish; because they received not the love of the truth, that they might be saved.

¹⁶ Be not afraid when one is made rich, when the glory of his house is increased; ¹⁷ For when he dies he shall carry nothing away: his glory shall not descend after him. ¹⁸ Though while he lived he blessed his soul: and men will praise you, when you do well for yourself. ¹⁹ He shall go to the generation of his fathers; they shall never see light. ²⁰ Man that is in honor, and understands not, is like the beasts that perish.

¹⁰⁴ Through your precepts I get understanding: therefore I hate every false way.

⁶ The getting of treasures by a lying tongue is a vanity tossed to and fro of them that seek death.

⁴ I made myself great works; I built houses; I planted vineyards: ⁵ I made myself gardens and orchards, and I planted trees in them with all kind of fruit: ⁶ I made myself pools of water, with which to water the forest that brings forth trees: ⁷ I got myself male and female servants, and had servants born in my house; also I had great possessions of great and small cattle more than all that were in Jerusalem before me: ⁸ I gathered for myself also silver and gold, and the special treasures of kings and of the provinces: I got men singers and women singers, the delights of the sons of men, and musical instruments of all sorts. ⁹ So I was great, and increased more than all that were before me in Jerusalem: also my wisdom remained with me.

⁸ There is one alone, and there is not a second; yea, he has neither child nor brother: yet is there no end of all his labor; neither is his eye satisfied with riches; neither says he, For whom do I labor, and deprive my soul of good? This is also vanity, yea, it is a heavy travail.

¹² For wisdom is a defense, and money is a defense: but the excellence of knowledge is, that wisdom gives life to them that have it.

¹⁶ Then said I, Wisdom is better than strength: nevertheless the poor man's wisdom is despised, and his words are not heard. ¹⁷ The words of wise men are heard in quiet more than the cry of him that rules among fools. ¹⁸ Wisdom is better than weapons of war: but one sinner destroys much good.

⁴⁴ Again, the kingdom of heaven is like unto treasure hid in a field; which when a man has found, he hides, and for joy thereof goes and sells all that he has, and buys that field. ⁴⁵ Again, the kingdom of heaven is like unto a merchant man, seeking fine pearls: ⁴⁶ Who, when he had found one pearl of great price, went and sold all that he had, and bought it.

³⁶ For what shall it profit a man, if he shall gain the whole world, and lose his own life? ³⁷ Or what shall a man give in exchange for his life?

⁴² But one thing is needful: and Mary has chosen that good part, which shall not be taken away from her.

²⁰ But God said unto him, You fool, this night your soul shall be required of you: then whose shall those things be, which you have prepared?

⁸ Yea doubtless, and I count all things but loss for the excellency of the knowledge of Christ Jesus my Lord: for whom I have suffered the loss of all things, and do count them but rubbish, that I may win Christ,

³⁰ Therefore the LORD God of Israel says, I said indeed that your house, and the house of your father, should walk before me forever: but now the LORD says, Be it far from me; for them that honor me I will honor, and they that despise me shall be lightly esteemed.

⁵ In Gibeon the LORD appeared to Solomon in a dream by night: and God said, Ask what I shall give you. ⁶ And Solomon said, You have shown unto your servant David my father great mercy, according as he walked before you in truth, and in righteousness, and in uprightness of heart with you; and you have kept for him this great kindness, that you have given him a son to sit on his throne, as it is this day. ⁷ And now, O LORD my God, you have made your servant king instead of David my father: and I am but a little child: I know not how to go out or come in. ⁸ And your servant is in the midst of your people whom you have chosen, a great people, that cannot be numbered nor counted for multitude. ⁹ Give therefore your servant an understanding heart to judge your people, that I may discern between good and bad: for who is able to judge this your so great a people? ¹⁰ And the speech pleased the Lord, that Solomon had asked this thing. ¹¹ And God said unto him, Because you have asked this thing, and have not asked for yourself long life; neither have asked riches for yourself, nor have asked the life of your enemies; but have asked for yourself understanding to discern justice; ¹² Behold, I have done according to your words: lo, I have given you a wise and an understanding heart; so that there was none like you before you, neither after you shall any arise like unto you. ¹³ And I have also given you that which you have not asked, both riches, and honor: so that there shall not be any among the kings like unto you all your days.

³⁵ The wise shall inherit glory: but shame shall be the recompense of fools.

⁴ By humility and the fear of the LORD are riches, and honor, and life.

³ And they that are wise shall shine as the brightness of the firmament; and they that turn many to righteousness as the stars forever and ever.

⁹ For they shall be an ornament of grace unto your head, and chains about your neck.

²² So shall they be life unto your soul, and grace to your neck.

³¹ White hair is a crown of glory, if it is found in the way of righteousness.

⁵ In that day shall the LORD of hosts be a crown of glory, and for a diadem of beauty, unto the remnant of his people,

⁹ In like manner also, that women adorn themselves in modest apparel, with decency and propriety; not with braided hair, or gold, or pearls, or costly array; ¹⁰ But (as becomes women professing godliness) with good works.

⁷ You made him a little lower than the angels; you crowned him with glory and honor, and did set him over the works of your hands: ⁸ You have put all things in subjection under his feet. For in that he put all in subjection under him, he left nothing that is not put under him. But now we see not yet all things put under him. ⁹ But we see Jesus, who was made a little lower than the angels for the suffering of death, crowned with glory and honor; that he by the grace of God should taste death for every man.

⁴ But let it be the hidden man of the heart, in that which is not corruptible, even the ornament of a meek and quiet spirit, which is in the sight of God of great price.

⁴ And when the chief Shepherd shall appear, you shall receive a crown of glory that fades not away.

²¹ To him that overcomes will I grant to sit with me in my throne, even as I also overcame, and sat down with my Father in his throne.

¹⁶ Honor your father and your mother, as the LORD your God has commanded you; that your days may be prolonged, and that it may go well with you, in the land which the LORD your God gives you.

² That you might fear the LORD your God, to keep all his statutes and his commandments, which I command you, you, and your son, and your son's son, all the days of your life; and that your days may be prolonged.

²² Receive, I pray you, the law from his mouth, and lay up his words in your heart.

¹ My son, if you will receive my words, and lay up my commandments with you;

² For length of days, and long life, and peace, shall they add to you.

¹⁶ Length of days is in her right hand; and in her left hand riches and honor.

¹⁰ Receive my instruction, and not silver; and knowledge rather than choice gold.

²⁰ Yet hear the word of the LORD, O you women, and let your ear receive the word of his mouth, and teach your daughters wailing, and everyone her neighbor lamentation.

³² And what he has seen and heard, that he testifies; and no man receives his testimony. ³³ He that has received his testimony has set his seal to this that God is true.

¹³ For this cause also thank we God without ceasing, because, when you received the word of God which you heard of us, you received it not as the word of men, but as it is in truth, the word of God, which effectually works also in you that believe.

¹⁵ This is a faithful saying, and worthy of all acceptance, that Christ Jesus came into the world to save sinners; of whom I am chief.

⁵ Behold, I have taught you statutes and judgments, even as the LORD my God commanded me, that you should do so in the land where you go to possess it.

²³ Moreover as for me, God forbid that I should sin against the LORD in ceasing to pray for you: but I will teach you the good and the right way: ²⁴ Only fear the LORD, and serve him in truth with all your heart; for consider what great things he has done for you.

³ He restores my soul: he leads me in the paths of righteousness for his name's sake.

⁴ Show me your ways, O LORD; teach me your paths. ⁵ Lead me in your truth, and teach me: for you are the God of my salvation; on you do I wait all the day.

⁴ He taught me also, and said unto me, Let your heart retain my words: keep my commandments, and live.

⁹ And moreover, because the preacher was wise, he still taught the people knowledge; yea, he pondered, and sought out, and set in order many proverbs.

¹⁰ And said, O full of all deceit and all mischief, you child of the devil, you enemy of all righteousness, will you not cease to pervert the right ways of the Lord?

³⁷ You have enlarged my path under me; so that my feet did not slip.

⁷ The steps of his strength shall be shortened, and his own counsel shall cast him down. ⁸ For he is cast into a net by his own feet, and he walks upon a snare.

³⁶ You have enlarged my path under me, that my feet did not slip.

¹¹ For he shall give his angels charge over you, to keep you in all your ways. ¹² They shall bear you up in their hands, lest you dash your foot against a stone.

¹⁶⁵ Great peace have they who love your law: and nothing shall offend them.

²³ Then shall you walk in your way safely, and your foot shall not stumble.

⁹ Jesus answered, Are there not twelve hours in the day? If any man walks in the day, he stumbles not, because he sees the light of this world. ¹⁰ But if a man walks in the night, he stumbles, because there is no light in him.

³² Why? Because they sought it not by faith, but as it were by the works of the law. For they stumbled at that stumbling stone; ³³ As it is written, Behold, I lay in Zion a stumbling stone and rock of offense: and whosoever believes on him shall not be ashamed.

⁸ And, A stone of stumbling, and a rock of offense, even to them who stumble at the word, being disobedient: to which also they were appointed.

¹⁰ He that loves his brother abides in the light, and there is no occasion of stumbling in him. ¹¹ But he that hates his brother is in darkness, and walks in darkness, and knows not where he goes, because that darkness has blinded his eyes.

²⁶ And he said, Let me go, for the day breaks. And he said, I will not let you go, except you bless me.

⁴⁷ For it is not a vain thing for you; because it is your life: and through this thing you shall prolong your days in the land, which you go over Jordan to possess.

⁴ It was but a little after I passed by them, when I found him whom my soul loves: I held him, and would not let him go, until I had brought him into my mother's house, and into the chamber of her that conceived me.

²⁷ And beginning at Moses and all the prophets, he expounded unto them in all the scriptures the things concerning himself. ²⁸ And they drew near unto the village, where they were going: and he made as though he would have gone further. ²⁹ But they constrained him, saying, Abide with us: for it is toward evening, and the day is far spent. And he went in to tarry with them.

³⁹ And many of the Samaritans of that city believed on him for the saying of the woman, who testified, He told me all that ever I did. ⁴⁰ So when the Samaritans were come unto him, they besought him that he would tarry with them: and he abode there two days. ⁴¹ And many more believed because of his own word; ⁴² And said unto the woman, Now we believe, not because of your saying: for we have heard him ourselves, and know that this is indeed the Christ, the Savior of the world.

⁶⁸ Then Simon Peter answered him, Lord, to whom shall we go? you have the words of eternal life.

⁴² And they continued steadfastly in the apostles' doctrine and fellowship, and in breaking of bread, and in prayers.

²³ Who, when he came, and had seen the grace of God, was glad, and exhorted them all, that with purpose of heart they would cling unto the Lord.

²¹ Test all things; hold fast that which is good.

¹³ I know your works and where you dwell, even where Satan's throne is: and you hold fast my name, and have not denied my faith, even in those days when Antipas was my faithful martyr, who was slain among you, where Satan dwells.

¹¹ And they overcame him by the blood of the Lamb, and by the word of their testimony; and they loved not their lives unto death.

¹ Blessed is the man that walks not in the counsel of the ungodly, nor stands in the way of sinners, nor sits in the seat of the scornful.

⁴ I have not sat with vain persons, neither will I go in with hypocrites. ⁵ I have hated the congregation of evildoers; and will not sit with the wicked.

¹⁰ My son, if sinners entice you, consent not.

⁶ Forsake the foolish, and live; and go in the way of understanding.

²⁰ He that walks with wise men shall be wise: but a companion of fools shall be destroyed.

³³ Be not deceived: evil companions corrupt good morals.

⁷ Keep far from a false matter; and the innocent and righteous slay you not: for I will not justify the wicked.

¹⁴ If iniquity be in your hand, put it far away, and let not wickedness dwell in your tents.

²³ If you return to the Almighty, you shall be built up, you shall put away iniquity far from your tents.

⁸ Remove your way far from her, and come not near the door of her house:

⁵ Deliver yourself as a gazelle from the hand of the hunter, and as a bird from the hand of the fowler.

¹⁵ He that walks righteously, and speaks uprightly; he that despises the gain of oppressions, that keeps his hands from the holding of bribes, that stops his ears from hearing of bloodshed, and shuts his eyes from seeing evil;

¹¹ And have no fellowship with the unfruitful works of darkness, but rather reprove them.

²² Abstain from all appearance of evil.

⁴ He devises mischief upon his bed; he sets himself in a way that is not good; he abhors not evil.

¹⁶ For their feet run to evil, and make haste to shed blood.

²⁰ But the wicked are like the troubled sea, when it cannot rest, whose waters cast up mire and dirt.

¹ Woe to them that devise iniquity, and work evil upon their beds! when the morning is light, they practice it, because it is in the power of their hand.

⁶⁶ And as soon as it was day, the elders of the people and the chief priests and the scribes came together, and led him into their council, saying,

²⁸ Then led they Jesus from Caiaphas unto the hall of judgment: and it was early; and they themselves went not into the judgment hall, lest they should be defiled; but that they might eat the passover.

¹⁴ Having eyes full of adultery, and that cannot cease from sin; beguiling unstable souls: a heart they have exercised with covetous practices; cursed children:

⁵ Behold, as wild donkeys in the desert, go they forth to their work; rising early for a prey: the wilderness yields food for them and for their children. ⁶ They reap every one his grain in the field: and they gather the vineyard of the wicked.

⁴ Have all the workers of iniquity no knowledge? who eat up my people as they eat bread, and call not upon the LORD.

¹⁷ Stolen waters are sweet, and bread eaten in secret is pleasant.

¹⁷ Bread gained by deceit is sweet to a man; but afterwards his mouth shall be filled with gravel.

²⁶ For among my people are found wicked men: they lie in wait, as he that sets snares; they set a trap, they catch men. ²⁷ As a cage is full of birds, so are their houses full of deceit: therefore they have become great, and grown rich. ²⁸ They have grown fat, they shine: yea, they pass over the deeds of the wicked: they judge not the cause, the cause of the fatherless, yet they prosper; and the right of the needy do they not defend.

²⁵ There is a conspiracy of her prophets in her midst, like a roaring lion tearing the prey; they have devoured souls; they have taken the treasure and precious things; they have made her many widows in her midst. ²⁶ Her priests have violated my law, and have profaned my holy things: they have put no difference between the holy and the common, neither have they shown difference between the unclean and the clean, and have hid their eyes from my sabbaths, and I am profaned among them. ²⁷ Her princes in her midst are like wolves tearing the prey, to shed blood, and to destroy souls, to get dishonest gain. ²⁸ And her prophets have daubed them with untempered mortar, seeing false visions, and divining lies unto them, saying, Thus says the Lord GOD, when the LORD has not spoken. ²⁹ The people of the land have used oppression, and committed robbery, and have oppressed the poor and needy: yea, they have oppressed the stranger wrongfully.

⁴ Hear this, O you that swallow up the needy, even to make the poor of the land to fail, ⁵ Saying, When will the new moon be gone, that we may sell grain? and the sabbath, that we may set forth wheat, making the ephah small, and the shekel great, and falsifying the balances by deceit? ⁶ That we may buy the poor for silver, and the needy for a pair of shoes; yea, and sell the refuse of the wheat?

⁵ Thus says the LORD : Concerning the prophets who make my people stray, who bite with their teeth, and cry, Peace; and he that puts nothing into their mouths, they even prepare war against him.

¹² For her rich men are full of violence, and her inhabitants have spoken lies, and their tongue is deceitful in their mouth.

³ Her princes within her are roaring lions; her judges are evening wolves; they leave not a bone till the morning.

¹³ But woe unto you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! for you shut up the kingdom of heaven against men: for you neither go in yourselves, neither allow you them that are entering to go in.

⁴ Behold, the hire of the laborers who have reaped down your fields, which is of you kept back by fraud, cries: and the cries of them who have reaped are entered into the ears of the Lord of hosts. ⁵ You have lived in pleasure on the earth, and been wanton; you have nourished your hearts, as in a day of slaughter.

⁴ And he shall be as the light of the morning, when the sun rises, even a morning without clouds; as the tender grass springing out of the earth, by clear shining after rain.

¹⁷ And your life shall be brighter than the noonday; you shall shine forth, you shall be as the morning.

¹⁰ But he knows the way that I take: when he has tested me, I shall come forth as gold.

⁷ They go from strength to strength, every one of them in Zion appears before God.

⁷ The way of the just is uprightness: you, most upright, do smooth the path of the just.

³ Let us know, let us press on to know the LORD: his going forth is prepared as the morning; and he shall come unto us as the rain, as the latter and former rain unto the earth.

⁶ And it shall come to pass in that day, that the light shall not be clear, nor dark: ⁷ But it shall be one day which shall be known to the LORD, not day, nor night: but it shall come to pass, that at evening time it shall be light.

¹⁴ You are the light of the world. A city that is set on a hill cannot be hid.

¹⁶ Let your light so shine before men, that they may see your good works, and glorify your Father who is in heaven.

⁴⁵ That you may be the children of your Father who is in heaven: for he makes his sun to rise on the evil and on the good, and sends rain on the just and on the unjust.

¹² Then spoke Jesus again unto them, saying, I am the light of the world: he that follows me shall not walk in darkness, but shall have the light of life.

¹⁸ But we all, with unveiled face beholding as in a mirror the glory of the Lord, are changed into the same image from glory to glory, even as by the Spirit of the Lord.

¹⁵ That you may be blameless and harmless, the sons of God, without rebuke, in the midst of a crooked and perverse nation, among whom you shine as lights in the world;

¹⁹ We have also a more sure word of prophecy; to which you do well that you take heed, as unto a light that shines in a dark place, until the day dawn, and the day star arise in your hearts:

¹⁸ But grow in grace, and in the knowledge of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. To him be glory both now and forever. Amen.

²³ And the city had no need of the sun, neither of the moon, to shine in it: for the glory of God is its light, and the Lamb is its lamp.

⁵ And there shall be no night there; and they need no lamp, neither light of the sun; for the Lord God gives them light: and they shall reign forever and ever.

⁹ He will keep the feet of his saints, and the wicked shall be silent in darkness; for by strength shall no man prevail.

¹⁴ They meet with darkness in the daytime, and grope in the noonday as in the night.

²⁵ They grope in the dark without light, and he makes them to stagger like a drunken man.

⁵ Yea, the light of the wicked shall be put out, and the flame of his fire shall not shine. ⁶ The light shall be dark in his tent, and his lamp shall be put out with him.

¹⁸ He shall be driven from light into darkness, and chased out of the world.

¹³ Who leave the paths of uprightness, to walk in the ways of darkness;

⁹ Therefore is justice far from us, neither does righteousness overtake us: we wait for light, but behold darkness; for brightness, but we walk in gloom. ¹⁰ We grope for the wall like the blind, and we grope as if we had no eyes: we stumble at noonday as in the twilight; we are in desolate places as dead men.

¹⁶ Give glory to the LORD your God, before he causes darkness, and before your feet stumble upon the dark mountains, and, while you look for light, he turns it into the shadow of death, and makes it gross darkness.

¹² Therefore their way shall be unto them as slippery ways in the darkness: they shall be driven on, and fall in it: for I will bring evil upon them, even the year of their punishment, says the LORD.

²³ And then will I profess unto them, I never knew you: depart from me, you that work iniquity.

¹⁴ Let them alone: they are blind leaders of the blind. And if the blind lead the blind, both shall fall into the ditch.

¹⁰ But if a man walks in the night, he stumbles, because there is no light in him.

³⁵ Then Jesus said unto them, Yet a little while is the light with you. Walk while you have the light, lest darkness come upon you: for he that walks in darkness knows not where he goes.

¹¹ But he that hates his brother is in darkness, and walks in darkness, and knows not where he goes, because that darkness has blinded his eyes.

¹ [A maschil of Asaph.] Give ear, O my people, to my law: incline your ears to the words of my mouth.

¹² So teach us to number our days, that we may apply our hearts unto wisdom.

²⁰ My son, keep your father's commandment, and forsake not the law of your mother: ²¹ Bind them continually upon your heart, and tie them about your neck.

¹ My son, keep my words, and lay up my commandments with you.

⁵ While he yet spoke, behold, a bright cloud overshadowed them: and behold a voice out of the cloud, which said, This is my beloved Son, in whom I am well pleased; hear you him.

⁸ I delight to do your will, O my God: yea, your law is within my heart.

³ Let not mercy and truth forsake you: bind them about your neck; write them upon the table of your heart:

²¹ My son, let not them depart from your eyes: keep sound wisdom and discretion:

¹ My son, keep my words, and lay up my commandments with you. ² Keep my commandments, and live; and my law as the apple of your eye.

⁸ It shall be health to your body, and strength to your bones.

¹⁰ Hear, O my son, and receive my sayings; and the years of your life shall be many.

¹⁸ There is one that speaks like the piercings of a sword: but the tongue of the wise brings health.

⁶ Behold, I will bring it health and healing, and I will heal them, and will reveal unto them the abundance of peace and truth.

²³ Search me, O God, and know my heart: try me, and know my thoughts: ²⁴ And see if there be any wicked way in me, and lead me in the way everlasting.

⁷ Wisdom is the principal thing; therefore get wisdom: and with all your getting get understanding.

¹⁶ A gracious woman retains honor: and strong men retain riches.

³ He that keeps his mouth keeps his life: but he that opens wide his lips shall have destruction.

⁵ Thorns and snares are in the way of the perverse: he that does keep his soul shall be far from them.

¹⁹ Hear you, my son, and be wise, and guide your heart in the way.

²⁶ He that trusts in his own heart is a fool: but whosoever walks wisely, he shall be delivered.

¹³ There is a great evil which I have seen under the sun, namely, riches kept by their owners to their hurt.

⁹ The heart is deceitful above all things, and desperately wicked: who can know it?

³⁴ O generation of vipers, how can you, being evil, speak good things? for out of the abundance of the heart the mouth speaks. ³⁵ A good man out of the good treasure of the heart brings forth good things: and an evil man out of the evil treasure brings forth evil things.

¹⁹ For out of the heart proceed evil thoughts, murders, adulteries, fornications, thefts, false witness, blasphemies:

²¹ For from within, out of the heart of men, proceed evil thoughts, adulteries, fornications, murders, ²² Thefts, covetousness, wickedness, deceit, licentiousness, an evil eye, blasphemy, pride, foolishness: ²³ All these evil things come from within, and defile the man.

³⁸ Watch and pray, lest you enter into temptation. The spirit truly is ready, but the flesh is weak.

⁴⁵ A good man out of the good treasure of his heart brings forth that which is good; and an evil man out of the evil treasure of his heart brings forth that which is evil: for of the abundance of the heart his mouth speaks.

¹⁵ Looking diligently lest any man fall short of the grace of God; lest any root of bitterness springing up trouble you, and thereby many be defiled;

¹⁴ But every man is tempted, when he is drawn away of his own lust, and enticed. ¹⁵ Then when lust has conceived, it brings forth sin: and sin, when it is finished, brings forth death.

¹² A worthless person, a wicked man, walks with a perverse mouth.

⁸ All the words of my mouth are in righteousness; there is nothing crooked or perverse in them.

¹³ The fear of the LORD is to hate evil: pride, and arrogance, and the evil way, and the perverse mouth, do I hate.

²⁰ He that has a crooked heart finds no good: and he that has a perverse tongue falls into calamity.

³¹ Cast away from you all your transgressions, by which you have transgressed; and make you a new heart and a new spirit: for why will you die, O house of Israel?

²⁵ Therefore putting away lying, speak every man truth with his neighbor: for we are members one of another. ²⁶ Be angry, and sin not: let not the sun go down upon your wrath: ²⁷ Neither give place to the devil. ²⁸ Let him that stole steal no more: but rather let him labor, working with his hands the thing which is good, that he may have to give to him that needs. ²⁹ Let no corrupt communication proceed out of your mouth, but that which is good to the use of edifying, that it may minister grace unto the hearers. ³⁰ And grieve not the holy Spirit of God, by whom you are sealed unto the day of redemption. ³¹ Let all bitterness, and wrath, and anger, and clamor, and evil speaking, be put away from you, with all malice:

⁸ But now you also put off all these; anger, wrath, malice, blasphemy, filthy talk out of your mouth.

⁵ Perverse wranglings of men of corrupt minds, and destitute of the truth, supposing that gain is godliness: from such withdraw yourself.

²¹ Therefore put away all filthiness and extreme wickedness, and receive with meekness the engrafted word, which is able to save your souls.

²⁶ If any man among you seems to be religious, and bridles not his tongue, but deceives his own heart, this man's religion is vain.

¹ Therefore laying aside all malice, and all guile, and hypocrisies, and envies, and all evil speaking,

¹ I made a covenant with my eyes; why then should I think upon a maiden?

³⁷ Turn away my eyes from beholding vanity; and revive me in your way.

⁵ Will you set your eyes upon that which is not? for riches certainly make themselves wings; they fly away as an eagle toward heaven.

³³ Your eyes shall behold strange things, and your heart shall utter perverse things.

²² The light of the body is the eye: if therefore your eye be sound, your whole body shall be full of light.

²³ The steps of a good man are ordered by the LORD: and he delights in his way.

² He brought me up also out of a horrible pit, out of the miry clay, and set my feet upon a rock, and established my steps.

⁵ O that my ways were directed to keep your statutes!

⁵⁹ I thought on my ways, and turned my feet unto your testimonies.

⁶ Lest you should ponder the path of life, her ways are unstable, that you can not know them.

²¹ For the ways of man are before the eyes of the LORD, and he ponders all his paths.

²⁸ Because he considers, and turns away from all his transgressions that he has committed, he shall surely live, he shall not die.

⁵ Now therefore thus says the LORD of hosts; Consider your ways.

⁷ Thus says the LORD of hosts; Consider your ways.

¹⁵ See then that you walk carefully, not as fools, but as wise,

¹⁷ Therefore be not unwise, but understanding what the will of the Lord is.

¹³ To the end he may establish your hearts unblamable in holiness before God, even our Father, at the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ with all his saints.

³ But the Lord is faithful, who shall establish you, and keep you from evil.

¹³ And make straight paths for your feet, lest that which is lame be turned out of the way; but let it rather be healed.

¹⁰ But the God of all grace, who has called us unto his eternal glory by Christ Jesus, after that you have suffered a while, restore, establish, strengthen, settle you.

³² You shall observe to do therefore as the LORD your God has commanded you: you shall not turn aside to the right hand or to the left.

³² Whatsoever thing I command you, observe to do it: you shall not add thereto, nor take away from it.

¹⁴ And you shall not go aside from any of the words which I command you this day, to the right hand, or to the left, to go after other gods to serve them.

⁷ Only be strong and very courageous, that you may observe to do according to all the law, which Moses my servant commanded you: turn not from it to the right hand or to the left, that you may prosper wherever you go.

¹⁷ The highway of the upright is to depart from evil: he that keeps his way preserves his soul.

¹⁶ Wash you, make yourself clean; put away the evil of your doings from before my eyes; cease to do evil;

⁹ Let love be without hypocrisy. Abhor that which is evil; cleave to that which is good.
