¹ My son, if you become surety for your friend, if you have struck your hand with a stranger, ² You are snared with the words of your mouth, you are taken with the words of your mouth. ³ Do this now, my son, and deliver yourself, when you have come into the hand of your friend; go, humble yourself, and plead with your friend. ⁴ Give not sleep to your eyes, nor slumber to your eyelids. ⁵ Deliver yourself as a gazelle from the hand of the hunter, and as a bird from the hand of the fowler. ⁶ Go to the ant, you sluggard; consider her ways, and be wise: ⁷ Who having no guide, overseer, or ruler, ⁸ Provides her food in the summer, and gathers her food in the harvest. ⁹ How long will you sleep, O sluggard? when will you arise out of your sleep? ¹⁰ Yet a little sleep, a little slumber, a little folding of the hands to sleep: ¹¹ So shall your poverty come upon you like a vagabond, and your want like an armed man. ¹² A worthless person, a wicked man, walks with a perverse mouth. ¹³ He winks with his eyes, he signals with his feet, he motions with his fingers; ¹⁴ Perversity is in his heart, he devises evil continually; he sows discord. ¹⁵ Therefore shall his calamity come suddenly; suddenly shall he be broken without remedy. ¹⁶ These six things does the LORD hate: yea, seven are an abomination unto him: ¹⁷ A proud look, a lying tongue, and hands that shed innocent blood, ¹⁸ A heart that devises wicked imaginations, feet that are swift in running to evil, ¹⁹ A false witness that speaks lies, and he that sows discord among brethren. ²⁰ My son, keep your father's commandment, and forsake not the law of your mother: ²¹ Bind them continually upon your heart, and tie them about your neck. ²² When you go, it shall lead you; when you sleep, it shall keep you; and when you awake, it shall talk with you. ²³ For the commandment is a lamp; and the law is light; and reproofs of instruction are the way of life: ²⁴ To keep you from the evil woman, from the flattery of the tongue of a seductress. ²⁵ Lust not after her beauty in your heart; neither let her allure you with her eyelids. ²⁶ For by means of a harlot a man is reduced to a piece of bread: and the adulteress will prey upon his precious life. ²⁷ Can a man take fire in his bosom, and his clothes not be burned? ²⁸ Can one go upon hot coals, and his feet not be burned? ²⁹ So is he that goes in to his neighbor's wife; whosoever touches her shall not be innocent. ³⁰ Men do not despise a thief, if he steals to satisfy his soul when he is hungry; ³¹ But if he is found, he shall restore sevenfold; he shall give up all the goods of his house. ³² But whosoever commits adultery with a woman lacks understanding: he that does it destroys his own soul. ³³ A wound and dishonor shall he get; and his reproach shall not be wiped away. ³⁴ For jealousy causes the rage of a man: therefore he will not spare in the day of vengeance. ³⁵ He will not regard any ransom; neither will he be appeased, though you give many gifts.

⁹ I will be surety for him; of my hand shall you require him: if I bring him not unto you, and set him before you, then let me bear the blame forever:

³² For your servant became surety for the lad unto my father, saying, If I bring him not unto you, then I shall bear the blame to my father forever. ³³ Now therefore, I pray you, let your servant abide instead of the lad a slave to my lord; and let the lad go up with his brothers.

³ Lay down a surety for me with you; who is he that will give surety for me?

¹⁵ He that is surety for a stranger shall suffer for it: and he that hates being surety is secure.

¹ [To the Chief Musician. A Psalm of David.] In the LORD put I my trust: how say you to my soul, Flee as a bird to your mountain?

³ Surely he shall deliver you from the snare of the fowler, and from the deadly pestilence.

⁷ Our soul is escaped as a bird out of the snare of the fowlers: the snare is broken, and we are escaped.

¹⁷ Surely in vain the net is spread in the sight of any bird.

⁷ But ask now the beasts, and they shall teach you; and the fowls of the air, and they shall tell you: ⁸ Or speak to the earth, and it shall teach you: and the fish of the sea shall declare unto you.

⁹ How long will you sleep, O sluggard? when will you arise out of your sleep?

²⁶ As vinegar to the teeth, and as smoke to the eyes, so is the sluggard to them that send him.

⁴ The soul of the sluggard desires, and has nothing: but the soul of the diligent shall be made rich.

¹⁹ The way of the slothful man is as a hedge of thorns: but the way of the righteous is made a highway.

⁹ He also that is slothful in his work is brother to him that is a great waster.

¹⁵ Slothfulness casts into a deep sleep; and an idle soul shall suffer hunger.

²⁴ A slothful man hides his hand in his dish, and will not so much as bring it to his mouth again.

⁴ The sluggard will not plow by reason of the cold; therefore shall he beg in harvest, and have nothing.

²⁵ The desire of the slothful kills him; for his hands refuse to labor.

¹³ The slothful man says, There is a lion outside, I shall be slain in the streets.

³⁰ I went by the field of the slothful, and by the vineyard of the man void of understanding; ³¹ And, lo, it was all grown over with thorns, and weeds had covered its face, and its stone wall was broken down. ³² Then I saw, and considered it well: I looked upon it, and received instruction. ³³ Yet a little sleep, a little slumber, a little folding of the hands to sleep: ³⁴ So shall your poverty come like a robber; and your want like an armed man.

¹³ The slothful man says, There is a lion in the way; a lion is in the streets. ¹⁴ As the door turns upon its hinges, so does the slothful upon his bed. ¹⁵ The slothful hides his hand in his dish; it grieves him to bring it again to his mouth. ¹⁶ The sluggard is wiser in his own eyes than seven men that can answer reasonably.

²⁵ The ants are a people not strong, yet they prepare their food in the summer;

³ The ox knows his owner, and the donkey his master's crib: but Israel does not know, my people do not consider.

²⁶ Behold the fowls of the air: for they sow not, neither do they reap, nor gather into barns; yet your heavenly Father feeds them. Are you not much better than they?

²⁶ His lord answered and said unto him, You wicked and slothful servant, you knew that I reap where I sowed not, and gather where I have not spread:

¹¹ Not slothful in business; fervent in spirit; serving the Lord;

¹² That you be not slothful, but followers of them who through faith and patience inherit the promises.

³⁹ Will you hunt the prey for the lion? or satisfy the appetite of the young lions,

²⁶ Does the hawk fly by your wisdom, and stretch her wings toward the south? ²⁷ Does the eagle mount up at your command, and make her nest on high? ²⁸ She dwells and abides on the rock, upon the crag of the rock, and the stronghold. ²⁹ From there she seeks the prey, and her eyes behold afar off. ³⁰ Her young ones also suck up blood: and where the slain are, there is she.

⁴ Will he make a covenant with you? will you take him for a servant forever? ⁵ Will you play with him as with a bird? or will you leash him for your maidens? ⁶ Shall your companions make a banquet of him? shall they apportion him among the merchants? ⁷ Can you fill his skin with harpoons? or his head with fish spears? ⁸ Lay your hand upon him, remember the battle, do no more. ⁹ Behold, the hope of subduing him is in vain: shall one not be cast down even at the sight of him? ¹⁰ None is so fierce that would dare stir him up: who then is able to stand before me? ¹¹ Who has given to me, that I should repay him? whatsoever is under the whole heaven is mine. ¹² I will not conceal his limbs, nor his power, nor his graceful proportion. ¹³ Who can remove the face of his garment? or who can approach him with a double bridle? ¹⁴ Who can open the doors of his face? his teeth are terrible all around. ¹⁵ His scales are his pride, shut up together as with a close seal. ¹⁶ One is so near to another, that no air can come between them. ¹⁷ They are joined one to another, they stick together, that they cannot be parted. ¹⁸ By his sneezings a light flashes, and his eyes are like the eyelids of the morning. ¹⁹ Out of his mouth go burning lamps, and sparks of fire leap out. ²⁰ Out of his nostrils goes smoke, as out of a boiling pot or caldron. ²¹ His breath kindles coals, and a flame goes out of his mouth. ²² In his neck remains strength, and sorrow is turned into dancing before him. ²³ The folds of his flesh are joined together: they are firm on him; they cannot be moved. ²⁴ His heart is as firm as a stone; yea, as hard as a piece of the lower millstone. ²⁵ When he raises up himself, the mighty are afraid: because of his crashings they are beside themselves. ²⁶ The sword of him that reaches him cannot avail: neither the spear, the dart, nor the javelin. ²⁷ He regards iron as straw, and bronze as rotten wood. ²⁸ The arrow cannot make him flee: clingstones with him are turned into stubble. ²⁹ Darts are counted as straw: he laughs at the threat of a javelin. ³⁰ His undersides are like sharp stones: he spreads sharp pointed marks upon the mire. ³¹ He makes the deep boil like a pot: he makes the sea like a pot of ointment. ³² He leaves a path shining after him; one would think the deep to have white hair. ³³ Upon earth there is not his like, which is made without fear. ³⁴ He beholds every high thing: he is a king over all the children of pride.

²⁷ The locusts have no king, yet they go forth all of them by bands;

⁵ He that gathers in summer is a wise son: but he that sleeps in harvest is a son that causes shame.

¹⁹ Laying up in store for themselves a good foundation against the time to come, that they may lay hold on eternal life.

⁸ Understand, you senseless among the people: and you fools, when will you be wise?

²² How long, you simple ones, will you love simplicity? and the scoffers delight in their scoffing, and fools hate knowledge?

¹⁴ O Jerusalem, wash your heart from wickedness, that you may be saved. How long shall your vain thoughts lodge within you?

⁶ There was a man sent from God, whose name was John.

¹¹ And this, knowing the time, that now it is high time to awake out of sleep: for now is our salvation nearer than when we believed.

¹⁴ Therefore he says, Awake you that sleep, and arise from the dead, and Christ shall give you light.

² For you yourselves know perfectly that the day of the Lord so comes as a thief in the night. ³ For when they shall say, Peace and safety; then sudden destruction comes upon them, as travail upon a woman with child; and they shall not escape. ⁴ But you, brethren, are not in darkness, that that day should overtake you as a thief. ⁵ You are all the children of light, and the children of the day: we are not of the night, nor of darkness. ⁶ Therefore let us not sleep, as do others; but let us watch and be sober. ⁷ For they that sleep sleep in the night; and they that are drunk are drunk in the night.

⁶ Go to the ant, you sluggard; consider her ways, and be wise:

³³ Your eyes shall behold strange things, and your heart shall utter perverse things. ³⁴ Yea, you shall be as he that lies down in the midst of the sea, or as he that lies upon the top of a mast.

⁴ He becomes poor who has a slack hand: but the hand of the diligent makes rich.

³⁴ So shall your poverty come like a robber; and your want like an armed man.

²⁸ And Eliab his eldest brother heard when he spoke unto the men; and Eliab's anger was kindled against David, and he said, Why came you down here? and with whom have you left those few sheep in the wilderness? I know your pride, and the insolence of your heart; for you are come down that you might see the battle.

³ For the wicked boasts of his heart's desire, and blesses the covetous, whom the LORD abhors.

⁷ His mouth is full of cursing and deceit and fraud: under his tongue is mischief and vanity.

³ The words of his mouth are iniquity and deceit: he has ceased to be wise, and to do good.

² Your tongue devises evil; like a sharp razor, working deceitfully. ³ You love evil more than good; and lying rather than to speak righteousness. Selah. ⁴ You love all devouring words, O you deceitful tongue.

⁷ Behold, they bellow out with their mouths: swords are in their lips: for who, say they, does hear?

⁸ They are corrupt, and speak wickedly concerning oppression: they speak loftily. ⁹ They set their mouth against the heavens, and their tongue walks through the earth.

¹² To deliver you from the way of the evil man, from the man that speaks perverse things;

²⁴ Put away from you a deceitful mouth, and perverse lips put far from you.

¹⁴ Perversity is in his heart, he devises evil continually; he sows discord.

¹³ The fear of the LORD is to hate evil: pride, and arrogance, and the evil way, and the perverse mouth, do I hate.

⁶ The righteousness of the upright shall deliver them: but transgressors shall be taken in their own lust.

²⁷ An ungodly man digs up evil: and in his lips there is as a burning fire.

⁴ A wicked doer gives heed to false lips; and a liar gives ear to a mischievous tongue.

² One basket had very good figs, even like the figs that are first ripe: and the other basket had very bad figs, which could not be eaten, they were so bad.

⁸ And as the bad figs, which cannot be eaten, they are so bad; surely thus says the LORD, So will I give Zedekiah the king of Judah, and his princes, and the rest of Jerusalem, that remain in this land, and them that dwell in the land of Egypt: ⁹ And I will deliver them to be removed into all the kingdoms of the earth for their harm, to be a reproach and a proverb, a taunt and a curse, in all places where I shall drive them. ¹⁰ And I will send the sword, the famine, and the pestilence, among them, till they be consumed from off the land that I gave unto them and to their fathers.

³⁴ O generation of vipers, how can you, being evil, speak good things? for out of the abundance of the heart the mouth speaks.

³⁰ Also of your own selves shall men arise, speaking perverse things, to draw away disciples after them.

¹³ And at the same time they learn to be idle, wandering about from house to house; and not only idle, but gossips also and busybodies, speaking things which they ought not.

¹⁰ For there are many unruly and vain talkers and deceivers, especially they of the circumcision: ¹¹ Whose mouths must be stopped, who ruin whole households, teaching things which they ought not, for dishonest gain.

²¹ Therefore put away all filthiness and extreme wickedness, and receive with meekness the engrafted word, which is able to save your souls.

⁶ And the tongue is a fire, a world of iniquity: so is the tongue among our members, that it defiles the whole body, and sets on fire the course of nature; and it is set on fire by hell.

¹² Why does your heart carry you away? and what do your eyes wink at,

¹⁹ Let not them that are my enemies wrongfully rejoice over me: neither let them wink with the eye that hate me without a cause.

⁶ Lest you should ponder the path of life, her ways are unstable, that you can not know them.

¹⁰ He that winks with the eye causes trouble: but a prating fool shall fall.

⁴ He devises mischief upon his bed; he sets himself in a way that is not good; he abhors not evil.

¹⁴ Who rejoice to do evil, and delight in the perverseness of the wicked;

²⁹ Devise not evil against your neighbor, seeing he dwells securely by you.

¹⁸ A heart that devises wicked imaginations, feet that are swift in running to evil, ¹⁹ A false witness that speaks lies, and he that sows discord among brethren.

²⁸ A perverse man sows strife: and a whisperer separates best friends. ²⁹ A violent man entices his neighbor, and leads him into the way that is not good. ³⁰ He shuts his eyes to devise perverse things: moving his lips he brings evil to pass.

⁸ The way of man is perverse and strange: but as for the pure, his work is right.

⁸ He that sows iniquity shall reap trouble: and the rod of his anger shall fail.

¹⁷ He that passes by, and meddles with a quarrel not belonging to him, is like one that takes a dog by the ears. ¹⁸ As a madman who throws firebrands, arrows, and death, ¹⁹ So is the man that deceives his neighbor, and says, Am I not jesting? ²⁰ Where no wood is, there the fire goes out: so where there is no talebearer, the strife ceases. ²¹ As coals are to burning coals, and wood to fire; so is a contentious man to kindle strife. ²² The words of a talebearer are tasty morsels, and they go down into the innermost parts of the body.

⁷ The schemes also of the schemer are evil: he devises wicked plans to destroy the poor with lying words, even when the needy speaks justly.

²⁰ But the wicked are like the troubled sea, when it cannot rest, whose waters cast up mire and dirt.

² Then said he unto me, Son of man, these are the men that devise iniquity, and give wicked counsel in this city:

⁷ For they have sown the wind, and they shall reap the whirlwind: the stalk has no bud: it shall yield no meal: if so be it does yield, the aliens shall swallow it up.

¹ Woe to them that devise iniquity, and work evil upon their beds! when the morning is light, they practice it, because it is in the power of their hand.

¹⁷ Now I beseech you, brethren, mark them who cause divisions and offenses contrary to the doctrine which you have learned; and avoid them.

⁷ Be not deceived; God is not mocked: for whatsoever a man sows, that shall he also reap. ⁸ For he that sows to his flesh shall of the flesh reap corruption; but he that sows to the Spirit shall of the Spirit reap life everlasting.

¹⁶ But they mocked the messengers of God, and despised his words, and scoffed at his prophets, until the wrath of the LORD arose against his people, till there was no remedy.

²² Now consider this, you that forget God, lest I tear you in pieces, and there be none to deliver.

¹⁸ Surely you did set them in slippery places: you cast them down into destruction. ¹⁹ How are they brought into desolation, as in a moment! they are utterly consumed with terrors. ²⁰ As a dream when one awakes; so, O Lord, when you awake, you shall despise their image.

²⁷ When your terror comes as desolation, and your destruction comes as a whirlwind; when distress and anguish comes upon you.

¹ He, that being often reproved hardens his neck, shall suddenly be destroyed, and that without remedy.

¹³ Therefore this iniquity shall be to you like a breach ready to fall, a bulge in a high wall, whose breaking comes suddenly, in an instant. ¹⁴ And he shall break it as the breaking of the potters' vessel that is broken in pieces; he shall not spare: so that there shall not be found among the fragments of it a sherd to take fire from the hearth, or to dip water out of the cistern.

¹¹ And shall say unto them, Thus says the LORD of hosts; Even so will I break this people and this city, as one breaks a potter’s vessel, that cannot be made whole again: and they shall bury them in Topheth, till there be no place to bury.

³ For when they shall say, Peace and safety; then sudden destruction comes upon them, as travail upon a woman with child; and they shall not escape.

¹⁰ There shall not be found among you any one that makes his son or his daughter to pass through the fire, or that uses divination, or sorcery, or interprets omens, or is a witch, ¹¹ Or casts spells, or is a medium, or a wizard, or consults the dead. ¹² For all that do these things are an abomination unto the LORD: and because of these abominations the LORD your God does drive them out from before you.

¹⁸ You shall not bring the wages of a harlot, or the price of a dog, into the house of the LORD your God for any vow: for even both of these are an abomination unto the LORD your God.

⁴ Her former husband, who sent her away, may not take her again to be his wife, after she is defiled; for that is abomination before the LORD: and you shall not cause the land to sin, which the LORD your God gives you for an inheritance.

¹⁶ For all that do such things, and all that do unrighteously, are an abomination unto the LORD your God.

⁵ The LORD tests the righteous: but the wicked and him that loves violence his soul hates.

³² For the perverse is abomination to the LORD: but his secret is with the righteous.

¹ A false balance is abomination to the LORD: but a just weight is his delight.

²⁰ They that are of a perverse heart are abomination to the LORD: but such as are upright in their way are his delight.

⁸ The sacrifice of the wicked is an abomination to the LORD: but the prayer of the upright is his delight. ⁹ The way of the wicked is an abomination unto the LORD: but he loves him that follows after righteousness.

¹⁵ He that justifies the wicked, and he that condemns the just, even they both are abomination to the LORD.

¹⁰ Diverse weights, and diverse measures, both of them are alike abomination to the LORD.

²³ Diverse weights are an abomination unto the LORD; and a false balance is not good.

¹⁸ There are three things which are too wonderful for me, yea, four which I know not:

²¹ For three things the earth trembles, under four it cannot bear up:

²⁴ There are four things which are little upon the earth, but they are exceeding wise:

²⁹ There are three things which are stately in stride, yea, four are stately in their walk:

³ Thus says the LORD; For three transgressions of Damascus, and for four, I will not turn away its punishment; because they have threshed Gilead with threshing instruments of iron:

⁶ Thus says the LORD; For three transgressions of Gaza, and for four, I will not turn away its punishment; because they carried away captive the whole captivity, to deliver them up to Edom:

⁹ Thus says the LORD; For three transgressions of Tyre, and for four, I will not turn away its punishment; because they delivered up the whole captivity to Edom, and remembered not the brotherly covenant:

¹¹ Thus says the LORD; For three transgressions of Edom, and for four, I will not turn away its punishment; because he did pursue his brother with the sword, and did cast off all pity, and his anger did tear perpetually, and he kept his wrath forever:

¹ Thus says the LORD; For three transgressions of Moab, and for four, I will not turn away its punishment; because he burned the bones of the king of Edom into lime:

⁴ Thus says the LORD; For three transgressions of Judah, and for four, I will not turn away its punishment; because they have despised the law of the LORD, and have not kept his commandments, and their lies caused them to err, after which their fathers have walked:

⁶ Thus says the LORD; For three transgressions of Israel, and for four, I will not turn away its punishment; because they sold the righteous for silver, and the poor for a pair of shoes;

²⁷ And there shall in no way enter into it anything that defiles, neither whatsoever works abomination, or makes a lie: but they who are written in the Lamb's book of life.

¹⁰ That innocent blood be not shed in your land, which the LORD your God gives you for an inheritance, and so blood be upon you.

²⁵ Cursed be he that takes a bribe to slay an innocent person. And all the people shall say, Amen.

⁴ And also for the innocent blood that he shed: for he filled Jerusalem with innocent blood; which the LORD would not pardon.

⁶ You shall destroy them that speak falsehood: the LORD will abhor the bloody and deceitful man.

⁴ The wicked, through the pride of his countenance, will not seek after God: God is not in any of his thoughts.

²⁷ For you will save the humble people; but will bring down haughty looks.

¹⁸ Let the lying lips be put to silence; who speak grievous things proudly and contemptuously against the righteous.

⁶ Therefore pride surrounds them as a chain; violence covers them as a garment. ⁷ Their eyes stand out with abundance: they have more than heart could wish. ⁸ They are corrupt, and speak wickedly concerning oppression: they speak loftily.

⁵ Whoever secretly slanders his neighbor, him will I cut off: he that has a haughty look and a proud heart will I not endure.

² Deliver my soul, O LORD, from lying lips, and from a deceitful tongue. ³ What shall be given unto you? or what shall be done unto you, you false tongue?

¹ [A song of ascents. Of David.] LORD, my heart is not haughty, nor my eyes lofty: neither do I exercise myself in great matters, or in things too high for me.

¹¹ If they say, Come with us, let us lie in wait for blood, let us lurk secretly for the innocent without cause:

²² Lying lips are abomination to the LORD: but they that deal truly are his delight.

⁵ A faithful witness will not lie: but a false witness will utter lies.

⁷ Excellent speech becomes not a fool: much less do lying lips a prince.

⁴ A haughty look, a proud heart, and the plowing of the wicked, is sin.

²⁸ A lying tongue hates those that are afflicted by it; and a flattering mouth works ruin.

¹³ There is a generation, O how lofty are their eyes! and their eyelids are lifted up.

¹⁵ And when you spread forth your hands, I will hide my eyes from you: yea, when you make many prayers, I will not hear: your hands are full of blood.

¹¹ The lofty looks of man shall be humbled, and the haughtiness of men shall be bowed down, and the LORD alone shall be exalted in that day.

⁹ The look on their countenance does witness against them; and they declare their sin as Sodom, they hide it not. Woe unto their soul! for they have brought evil unto themselves.

¹⁶ Moreover the LORD says, Because the daughters of Zion are haughty, and walk with outstretched necks and wanton eyes, walking and tripping as they go, and making a jingling with their feet:

³ For your hands are defiled with blood, and your fingers with iniquity; your lips have spoken lies, your tongue has muttered perverseness. ⁴ None calls for justice, nor does any plead for truth: they trust in empty words, and speak lies; they conceive mischief, and bring forth iniquity. ⁵ They hatch viper’s eggs, and weave the spider's web: he that eats of their eggs dies, and from that which is crushed a viper breaks out. ⁶ Their webs shall not become garments, neither shall they cover themselves with their works: their works are works of iniquity, and the act of violence is in their hands. ⁷ Their feet run to evil, and they make haste to shed innocent blood: their thoughts are thoughts of iniquity; wasting and destruction are in their paths.

¹ Hear the word of the LORD, you children of Israel: for the LORD has a controversy with the inhabitants of the land: Because there is no truth, nor mercy, nor knowledge of God in the land. ² By swearing, and lying, and killing, and stealing, and committing adultery, they break all restraint, and bloodshed touches bloodshed.

⁴⁴ You are of your father the devil, and the lusts of your father you will do. He was a murderer from the beginning, and abode not in the truth, because there is no truth in him. When he speaks a lie, he speaks of his own: for he is a liar, and the father of it.

⁵ Likewise, you younger, submit yourselves unto the elder. Yea, all of you be subject one to another, and be clothed with humility: for God resists the proud, and gives grace to the humble.

¹⁵ For outside are dogs, and sorcerers, and fornicators, and murderers, and idolaters, and whosoever loves and makes a lie.

⁵ And God saw that the wickedness of man was great in the earth, and that every imagination of the thoughts of his heart was only evil continually.

¹⁶ For their feet run to evil, and make haste to shed blood.

⁸ He that plans to do evil shall be called a mischievous person.

⁷ Their feet run to evil, and they make haste to shed innocent blood: their thoughts are thoughts of iniquity; wasting and destruction are in their paths.

¹⁷ And let none of you imagine evil in your hearts against his neighbor; and love no false oath: for all these are things that I hate, says the LORD.

¹⁵ Their feet are swift to shed blood:

¹⁶ You shall not bear false witness against your neighbor.

¹ You shall not raise a false report: put not your hand with the wicked to be an unrighteous witness.

¹⁶ If a false witness rises up against any man to testify against him that which is wrong; ¹⁷ Then both the men, between whom the controversy is, shall stand before the LORD, before the priests and the judges, who shall be in those days; ¹⁸ And the judges shall make diligent inquiry: and, behold, if the witness is a false witness, and has testified falsely against his brother; ¹⁹ Then shall you do unto him, as he had thought to have done unto his brother: so shall you put the evil away from among you. ²⁰ And those who remain shall hear, and fear, and shall hereafter commit no more any such evil among you.

¹⁰ And set two men, sons of Belial, before him, to bear witness against him, saying, You did blaspheme God and the king. And then carry him out, and stone him, that he may die. ¹¹ And the men of his city, even the elders and the nobles who were the inhabitants in his city, did as Jezebel had sent unto them, and as it was written in the letters which she had sent unto them. ¹² They proclaimed a fast, and set Naboth on high among the people. ¹³ And there came in two men, children of Belial, and sat before him: and the men of Belial witnessed against him, even against Naboth, in the presence of the people, saying, Naboth did blaspheme God and the king. Then they carried him forth out of the city, and stoned him with stones, so that he died. ¹⁴ Then they sent to Jezebel, saying, Naboth is stoned, and is dead. ¹⁵ And it came to pass, when Jezebel heard that Naboth was stoned, and was dead, that Jezebel said to Ahab, Arise, take possession of the vineyard of Naboth the Jezreelite, which he refused to give you for money: for Naboth is not alive, but dead.

¹² Deliver me not over unto the will of my enemies: for false witnesses are risen up against me, and such as breathe out cruelty.

¹¹ False witnesses did rise up; they laid to my charge things that I knew not.

¹⁷ He that speaks truth shows forth righteousness: but a false witness, deceit.

²⁸ A perverse man sows strife: and a whisperer separates best friends.

⁵ A false witness shall not be unpunished, and he that speaks lies shall not escape.

⁹ A false witness shall not be unpunished, and he that speaks lies shall perish.

¹⁰ Cast out the scoffer, and contention shall go out; yea, strife and reproach shall cease.

¹⁸ A man that bears false witness against his neighbor is a club, and a sword, and a sharp arrow.

²⁰ Where no wood is, there the fire goes out: so where there is no talebearer, the strife ceases.

¹⁹ For out of the heart proceed evil thoughts, murders, adulteries, fornications, thefts, false witness, blasphemies:

⁵⁹ Now the chief priests, and elders, and all the council, sought false witness against Jesus, to put him to death;

¹³ And set up false witnesses, who said, This man ceases not to speak blasphemous words against this holy place, and the law:

²³ But foolish and ignorant questions avoid, knowing that they do produce strifes.

¹⁴ But if you have bitter envying and strife in your hearts, boast not, and lie not against the truth. ¹⁵ This wisdom descends not from above, but is earthly, sensual, demonic. ¹⁶ For where envying and strife is, there is confusion and every evil work.

¹⁸ And the fruit of righteousness is sown in peace by them that make peace.

⁹ I wrote unto the church: but Diotrephes, who loves to have the preeminence among them, receives us not. ¹⁰ Therefore, if I come, I will remember his deeds which he does, speaking against us with malicious words: and not content with that, neither does he himself receive the brethren, and forbids them that would, and casts them out of the church.

¹⁸ If a man has a stubborn and rebellious son, who will not obey the voice of his father, or the voice of his mother, and when they have chastened him, will not hearken unto them:

¹⁶ Cursed be he that dishonors his father or his mother. And all the people shall say, Amen.

⁸ My son, hear the instruction of your father, and forsake not the law of your mother: ⁹ For they shall be an ornament of grace unto your head, and chains about your neck.

¹ My son, keep my words, and lay up my commandments with you. ² Keep my commandments, and live; and my law as the apple of your eye. ³ Bind them upon your fingers, write them upon the table of your heart. ⁴ Say unto wisdom, you are my sister; and call understanding your kinswoman:

²² Hearken unto your father that begat you, and despise not your mother when she is old.

¹¹ There is a generation that curses their father, and does not bless their mother.

¹ Children, obey your parents in the Lord: for this is right.

¹⁶ And it shall be for a sign upon your hand, and for frontlets between your eyes: for by strength of hand the LORD brought us forth out of Egypt.

⁸ And you shall bind them for a sign upon your hand, and they shall be as frontlets between your eyes.

³ Let not mercy and truth forsake you: bind them about your neck; write them upon the table of your heart:

⁶ Forsake her not, and she shall preserve you: love her, and she shall keep you.

²¹ Let them not depart from your eyes; keep them in the midst of your heart.

³ Since you are manifestly declared to be the epistle of Christ ministered by us, written not with ink, but with the Spirit of the living God; not in tables of stone, but in fleshly tables of the heart.

⁴ Concerning the works of men, by the word of your lips I have kept myself from the paths of the destroyer.

³ O send out your light and your truth: let them lead me; let them bring me unto your holy hill, and to your tabernacles.

⁹ [Beth] How shall a young man cleanse his way? by taking heed thereto according to your word.

¹⁷ You shall not hate your brother in your heart: you shall surely rebuke your neighbor, and not bear sin because of him.

⁸ The statutes of the LORD are right, rejoicing the heart: the commandment of the LORD is pure, enlightening the eyes.

⁹⁸ You through your commandments have made me wiser than my enemies: for they are ever with me. ⁹⁹ I have more understanding than all my teachers: for your testimonies are my meditation. ¹⁰⁰ I understand more than the ancients, because I keep your precepts.

¹⁰⁵ [Nun] Your word is a lamp unto my feet, and a light unto my path.

⁵ Let the righteous strike me; it shall be a kindness: and let him reprove me; it shall be an excellent oil, which shall not break my head: for yet my prayer also shall be against their evil.

¹⁸ She is a tree of life to them that lay hold upon her: and happy is everyone that retains her.

⁴ He taught me also, and said unto me, Let your heart retain my words: keep my commandments, and live.

¹³ Take fast hold of instruction; let her not go: keep her; for she is your life.

¹⁹ We have also a more sure word of prophecy; to which you do well that you take heed, as unto a light that shines in a dark place, until the day dawn, and the day star arise in your hearts:

⁵ Remember therefore from where you are fallen, and repent, and do the first works; or else I will come unto you quickly, and will remove your lampstand out of its place, except you repent.

¹⁶ To deliver you from the immoral woman, even from the seductress who flatters with her words;

³ For the lips of an immoral woman drop as a honeycomb, and her mouth is smoother than oil:

⁵ That they may keep you from the immoral woman, from the seductress who flatters with her words.

²⁶ And I find more bitter than death the woman whose heart is snares and nets, and her hands are fetters: whosoever pleases God shall escape from her; but the sinner shall be taken by her.

⁹ You have ravished my heart, my sister, my spouse; you have ravished my heart with one look of your eyes, with one jewel of your necklace.

²⁸ But I say unto you, That whosoever looks on a woman to lust after her has committed adultery with her already in his heart.

¹⁴ But every man is tempted, when he is drawn away of his own lust, and enticed. ¹⁵ Then when lust has conceived, it brings forth sin: and sin, when it is finished, brings forth death.

¹⁸ And say, Thus says the Lord GOD; Woe to the women that sew charms upon all wrists, and make veils for the heads, of every length, to hunt souls! Will you hunt the souls of my people, and will you save the souls alive that belong to you?

¹³ And not many days later the younger son gathered everything together, and took his journey into a far country, and there wasted his substance with riotous living. ¹⁴ And when he had spent everything, there arose a great famine in that land; and he began to be in want. ¹⁵ And he went and joined himself to a citizen of that country; and he sent him into his fields to feed swine.

³⁰ But as soon as this your son came, who has devoured your living with harlots, you have killed for him the fatted calf.

⁹ If my heart has been deceived by a woman, or if I have laid wait at my neighbor’s door; ¹⁰ Then let my wife grind for another, and let others bow down upon her. ¹¹ For this is a heinous crime; yea, it is an iniquity to be punished by the judges. ¹² For it is a fire that consumes to destruction, and would root out all my increase.

⁴ They are all adulterers, as an oven heated by the baker, who ceases to stir the fire after he has kneaded the dough, until it is leavened. ⁵ In the day of our king the princes have made him sick with bottles of wine; he stretched out his hand with scoffers. ⁶ For they have made ready their heart like an oven, while they lie in wait: their baker sleeps all the night; in the morning it burns as a flaming fire. ⁷ They are all hot as an oven, and have devoured their judges; all their kings have fallen: there is none among them that calls unto me.

⁵ Even so the tongue is a little member, and boasts great things. Behold, how great a forest a little fire kindles!

¹⁸ And Pharaoh called Abram, and said, What is this that you have done unto me? why did you not tell me that she was your wife? ¹⁹ Why did you say, She is my sister? so I might have taken her to me as a wife: now therefore behold your wife, take her, and go your way.

⁴ But Abimelech had not come near her: and he said, Lord, will you slay also a righteous nation? ⁵ Said he not unto me, She is my sister? and she, even she herself said, He is my brother: in the integrity of my heart and innocence of my hands have I done this. ⁶ And God said unto him in a dream, Yea, I know that you did this in the integrity of your heart; for I also have kept you from sinning against me: therefore I permitted you not to touch her. ⁷ Now therefore restore the man his wife; for he is a prophet, and he shall pray for you, and you shall live: and if you restore her not, know that you shall surely die, you, and all that are yours.

¹⁰ And Abimelech said, What is this you have done unto us? one of the people might easily have lain with your wife, and you would have brought guiltiness upon us. ¹¹ And Abimelech charged all his people, saying, He that touches this man or his wife shall surely be put to death.

¹⁰ And the man that commits adultery with another man's wife, even he that commits adultery with his neighbor's wife, the adulterer and the adulteress shall surely be put to death.

⁹ Why have you despised the commandment of the LORD, to do evil in his sight? you have killed Uriah the Hittite with the sword, and have taken his wife to be your wife, and have slain him with the sword of the children of Ammon. ¹⁰ Now therefore the sword shall never depart from your house; because you have despised me, and have taken the wife of Uriah the Hittite to be your wife.

²¹ And Ahithophel said unto Absalom, Go in unto your father’s concubines, which he has left to keep the house; and all Israel shall hear that you are abhorred by your father: then shall the hands of all that are with you be strong.

⁵ Everyone that is proud in heart is an abomination to the LORD: though they join hand in hand, none shall be unpunished.

⁸ They were as fed horses in the morning: everyone neighed after his neighbor’s wife. ⁹ Shall I not punish for these things? says the LORD: and shall not my soul be avenged on such a nation as this?

¹¹ And one has committed abomination with his neighbor’s wife; and another has lewdly defiled his daughter-in-law; and another in you has violated his sister, his father’s daughter.

⁵ And I will come near to you for judgment; and I will be a swift witness against the sorcerers, and against the adulterers, and against false swearers, and against those that oppress the hireling in his wages, the widow, and the fatherless, and that turn aside the sojourner from his right, and fear not me, says the LORD of hosts.

¹ Now concerning the things of which you wrote unto me: It is good for a man not to touch a woman.

³⁹ Will you hunt the prey for the lion? or satisfy the appetite of the young lions,

¹ If a man shall steal an ox, or a sheep, and kill it, or sell it; he shall restore five oxen for an ox, and four sheep for a sheep. ² If a thief be found breaking in, and be smitten that he dies, there shall no blood be shed for him. ³ If the sun be risen upon him, there shall be blood shed for him; for he should make full restitution; if he has nothing, then he shall be sold for his theft. ⁴ If the theft be certainly found in his hand alive, whether it be ox, or donkey, or sheep; he shall restore double.

⁶ And he shall restore the lamb fourfold, because he did this thing, and because he had no pity.

¹⁸ That which he labored for shall he restore, and shall not swallow it down: from the proceeds of business he shall not rejoice.

²¹ Hear now this, O foolish people, and without understanding; who have eyes, and see not; who have ears, and hear not:

³¹ Cast away from you all your transgressions, by which you have transgressed; and make you a new heart and a new spirit: for why will you die, O house of Israel?

¹¹ Harlotry and wine and new wine take away the heart. ¹² My people ask counsel of their idols of wood, and their staff advises unto them: for the spirit of harlotry has caused them to err, and they have played the harlot against their God.

⁹ O Israel, you have destroyed yourself; but in me is your help.

²² Professing themselves to be wise, they became fools, ²³ And changed the glory of the incorruptible God into an image made like to corruptible man, and to birds, and four-footed beasts, and creeping things. ²⁴ Therefore God also gave them up to uncleanness through the lusts of their own hearts, to dishonor their own bodies between themselves:

⁴ Let marriage be held in honor by all, and the bed undefiled: but fornicators and adulterers God will judge.

⁴ Unstable as water, you shall not excel; because you went up to your father's bed; then you defiled it: he went up to my couch.

¹⁹ And she made him sleep upon her knees; and she called for a man, and she caused him to shave off the seven locks of his head; and she began to afflict him, and his strength went from him. ²⁰ And she said, The Philistines be upon you, Samson. And he awoke out of his sleep, and said, I will go out as at other times before, and shake myself. And he knew not that the LORD was departed from him. ²¹ But the Philistines took him, and put out his eyes, and brought him down to Gaza, and bound him with fetters of bronze; and he did grind in the prison house.

⁵ Because David did that which was right in the eyes of the LORD, and turned not aside from anything that he commanded him all the days of his life, except only in the matter of Uriah the Hittite.

²⁶ Did not Solomon king of Israel sin by these things? yet among many nations was there no king like him, who was beloved of his God, and God made him king over all Israel: nevertheless even him did foreign women cause to sin.

To bring to remembrance.] O LORD, rebuke me not in your wrath: neither chasten me in your hot displeasure. ² For your arrows stick fast in me, and your hand presses me down. ³ There is no soundness in my flesh because of your anger; neither is there any rest in my bones because of my sin. ⁴ For my iniquities are gone over my head: as a heavy burden they are too heavy for me. ⁵ My wounds are foul and are corrupt because of my foolishness. ⁶ I am troubled; I am bowed down greatly; I go mourning all the day long. ⁷ For my loins are filled with a loathsome disease: and there is no soundness in my flesh. ⁸ I am feeble and utterly broken: I have groaned by reason of the turmoil of my heart.

⁸ Make me to hear joy and gladness; that the bones which you have broken may rejoice.

⁹ Lest you give your honor unto others, and your years unto the merciless: ¹⁰ Lest strangers be filled with your wealth; and your labors go to the house of a foreigner; ¹¹ And you mourn at the last, when your flesh and your body are consumed,

⁶ And Jesse begat David the king; and David the king begat Solomon of her that had been the wife of Uriah;

¹⁴ And the spirit of jealousy comes upon him, and he is jealous of his wife, and she is defiled: or if the spirit of jealousy comes upon him, and he is jealous of his wife, and she is not defiled:

¹¹ Phinehas, the son of Eleazar, the son of Aaron the priest, has turned my wrath away from the children of Israel, because he was zealous for my sake among them, that I consumed not the children of Israel in my jealousy.

²⁹ And when he was come into his house, he took a knife, and laid hold on his concubine, and divided her, together with her bones, into twelve pieces, and sent her into all the territory of Israel. ³⁰ And it was so, that all that saw it said, There was no such deed done nor seen from the day that the children of Israel came up out of the land of Egypt unto this day: consider it, take counsel, and speak your minds.

⁴ Wrath is cruel, and anger is outrageous; but which is able to stand before jealousy?

⁶ Set me as a seal upon your heart, as a seal upon your arm: for love is as strong as death; jealousy is cruel as the grave: its flames are flames of fire, a most vehement flame.

²² Do we provoke the Lord to jealousy? are we stronger than he?

¹ Now Naaman, captain of the army of the king of Syria, was a great man with his master, and honorable, because by him the LORD had given deliverance unto Syria: he was also a mighty man in valor, but he was a leper.

³ For I was my father's son, tender and the only one in the sight of my mother.

¹³ So she caught him, and kissed him, and with an impudent face said unto him,

²⁵ Before the mountains were settled, before the hills was I brought forth:

⁹ And man bows down, and the great man humbles himself: therefore forgive them not.

⁹ Therefore have I also made you contemptible and base before all the people, according as you have not kept my ways, but have been partial in the law.
