¹ "You shall not sacrifice to Yahweh your God an ox or sheep _⌊that has a physical defect_⌋* _⌊of anything seriously wrong_⌋,* for that is a detestable thing to Yahweh your God. ² If there is found in one of your _⌊towns_⌋* that Yahweh your God is giving to you a man or a woman that does evil in the eyes of Yahweh your God to transgress his covenant ³ and by going and serving other gods and so he bows down to them and to the sun or to the moon or to any of the host of heaven _⌊which I have forbidden_⌋,* ⁴ and it is reported to you or you hear about it and you enquire about it thoroughly and, indeed,* the trustworthiness of the deed* has been established, it _⌊has occurred_⌋,* this detestable thing, in Israel, ⁵ then you shall bring out that man or that woman who has* done this evil thing to your gates; that is, the man or the woman, and you shall stone them with stones _⌊to death_⌋.* ⁶ _⌊On the evidence of_⌋* two or three witnesses _⌊the person shall be put to death_⌋.* The person* shall not be put to death by the mouth of one witness. ⁷ The hand of the witnesses shall be first against the person* to kill the person,* and afterward the hands* of all the people, and so you shall purge the evil from your midst. ⁸ "_⌊If a matter is too difficult for you_⌋,* for example disputes between blood and blood,* between legal claim and legal claim* and between assault and assault* and between matters of discernment in your _⌊towns_⌋,* then you shall get up and you shall go to the place that Yahweh your God will choose; ⁹ then you shall go to the priests and the Levites and to the judge who will be in office in those days, and you shall enquire, and they shall announce to you _⌊the verdict_⌋.* ¹⁰ "And _⌊you shall carry out exactly the decision_⌋* that they announced to you from that place that Yahweh will choose, and _⌊you shall diligently observe_⌋* according to all that they instruct you. ¹¹ And so according to _⌊the instruction of the law_⌋* that they teach you and according to the decisions that they say to you, you shall do; you shall not turn from the word that they tell you to the right or to the left. ¹² And the man who treats with contempt* so as not to listen to the priest who is standing to minister on behalf of Yahweh your God or to the judge, that man shall die; so you shall purge the evil from Israel. ¹³ And all the people will hear and will be afraid, and they will not behave presumptuously again. ¹⁴ "When you have come to that land that Yahweh your God is giving to you and you have taken possession of it and you have settled in it, and you say, 'I will set over me a king like all the nations that are around me,' ¹⁵ indeed, you may set a king over you whom Yahweh your God will choose, from the midst of your countrymen* you must set a king over you; you are not allowed to appoint over you a man, a foreigner, who is not your countryman.* ¹⁶ Except, he may _⌊not make numerous_⌋* for himself horses, and he may not allow the people to to go to Egypt _⌊in order to increase horses_⌋,* for Yahweh has said to you that _⌊you may never return_⌋.* ¹⁷ And he must not _⌊acquire many_⌋* wives for himself, so that his heart would turn aside; and _⌊he must not accumulate silver and gold for himself excessively_⌋.* ¹⁸ "_⌊And then_⌋* _⌊when he is sitting_⌋* on the throne of his kingdom, then he shall write for himself a copy of this law on a scroll _⌊before_⌋* the Levitical priests. ¹⁹ And it shall be with him, and he shall read it* all the days of his life, so that he may learn to revere Yahweh your God by _⌊diligently observing_⌋* all the word of this law and these rules, ²⁰ so as not to exalt his heart above his countrymen* and not to turn aside from the commandment to the right or to the left, so that _⌊he may reign long over his kingdom_⌋,* he and his children in the midst of Israel."

³ And behold, seven other cows came up after them from the Nile, _⌊ugly and gaunt_⌋,* and they stood beside those* cows on the bank of the Nile. ⁴ And the _⌊ugly and gaunt_⌋* cows ate the seven _⌊well built and fat_⌋* cows. Then Pharaoh awoke.

¹⁹ And behold, seven other cows came up after them from the Nile, very _⌊ugly and gaunt_⌋*—never have I seen any as them in all the land of Egypt for ugliness.

⁵ The lamb for you must be a male, without defect, in its first year; you will take it from the sheep or from the goats.

²⁰ You shall not present any animal in which is a physical defect, because it shall not be _⌊acceptable_⌋* for you. ²¹ And if anyone brings a sacrifice of fellowship offerings for Yahweh to fulfill a vow or as a freewill offering from* the cattle or from* the flock,* it must be without defect _⌊to be acceptable_⌋;* there must not be any physical defect in it. ²² The blind or the injured or the maimed or the seeping or one with a skin disorder or one with a skin eruption—these you shall not present to Yahweh, nor shall you give from them an offering made by fire on the altar for Yahweh. ²³ As for* an ox or sheep that is deformed or* that is stunted, you may present it as a freewill offering, but* for a vow it will not be accepted. ²⁴ And you shall not present anything for Yahweh with bruised or* shattered or* torn or* cut-off testicles, and you shall not _⌊sacrifice_⌋* such in your land. ²⁵ And you shall not present your God's food from any of these by the hand of _⌊a foreigner_⌋,* because their deformity is in them; a physical defect is in them; they shall not be accepted for you.'"

²¹ But if there is a physical defect in it, such as lameness or blindness, any serious defect, you shall not sacrifice it to Yahweh your God.

¹⁸ You may not bring the _⌊hire_⌋* of a prostitute or _⌊the earnings of a male prostitute_⌋* into the house of Yahweh your God, for any vow offerings, because _⌊both_⌋* are a detestable thing to Yahweh your God.

⁴ her first husband who sent her away is not allowed _⌊to take her again_⌋* to become a wife to him after she has _⌊been defiled_⌋,* for that is a detestable thing _⌊before_⌋* Yahweh, and so you shall not mislead into sin the land that Yahweh your God is giving to you as an inheritance.

¹⁶ For detestable to* Yahweh your God is everyone who is doing such things,* everyone who is acting* dishonestly.

¹⁶ There are six things Yahweh hates, and seven things are abominations of his soul:*

¹ Balances of deceit are an abomination of Yahweh, but _⌊an accurate weight_⌋* delights him.

⁸ The sacrifice of the wicked is an abomination of Yahweh, but the prayer of the upright is his delight.

¹⁰ Stone and stone, measure and measure, _⌊both of them_⌋* are an abomination of Yahweh.

⁸ When you offer a blind animal for sacrifice, is that not wrong?* And when you offer the lame and the one who is ill, is that not wrong?* Present it, please, to your governor! Will he be pleased with you? _⌊Will he show you favor_⌋?"* says Yahweh of hosts.

¹³ And you say, 'Look! This is a weariness,' and you sniff with disdain at it," says Yahweh of hosts. "And you bring the stolen, the lame, and the one that is sick—this you bring as the offering! Should I _⌊accept it_⌋* from your hand?" says Yahweh. ¹⁴ "Cursed is the one who cheats, who has in his flock a male and vows it, but instead sacrifices a blemished one to the Lord! For I am a great king," says Yahweh of hosts, "and my name is awesome among the nations."

¹⁴ how much more will the blood of Christ, who through the eternal Spirit offered himself without blemish to God, cleanse our consciences from dead works to serve the living God?

¹⁹ but with the precious blood of Christ, like that of an unblemished and spotless lamb

¹⁵ and if you reject my statutes and if your inner self* abhors my regulations, to not carry out* all my commands by your breaking my covenant,

²⁵ And I will bring upon you a sword that seeks vengeance for the covenant, and you shall be gathered to your cities; and I will send a plague in your midst, and you shall be given into the hand of an enemy.

²³ Watch out for yourselves so that you do not forget the covenant of Yahweh your God that he had _⌊made_⌋* with you and make for yourselves a divine image of the form of anything that Yahweh your God _⌊has forbidden_⌋,*

⁶ "If your brother, the son of your mother or your son or your daughter _⌊or your wife whom you embrace_⌋* or _⌊your intimate friend_⌋* in secrecy _⌊says_⌋,* 'Let us go and let us serve other gods!' gods that you and your ancestors* have not known, ⁷ from among the gods of the people who are around you, _⌊those near you or those far from you_⌋,* from one end of the earth and up to the other end of the earth, ⁸ you must not give in to him, and you shall not listen to him, and your eye shall not take pity on him, and you shall not have compassion, and you shall not cover up* for him. ⁹ But you shall certainly kill him; your hand shall be first against him to kill him and next the hand of all of the people. ¹⁰ And you shall stone him with stones and let him die, for he tried to seduce you from Yahweh your God, the one bringing you from the land of Egypt, from the house of slavery. ¹¹ And all of Israel shall hear, and they shall fear, and _⌊they shall not continue to act_⌋* according to this evil thing in your midst. ¹² "If you hear in one of your towns which Yahweh your God is giving to you to live in, someone _⌊saying that_⌋* ¹³ _⌊worthless men_⌋* have gone out from your midst and have seduced the inhabitants of their town, _⌊saying_⌋,* 'Let us go and serve other gods!' whom you have not known, ¹⁴ then you shall inquire and examine and interrogate thoroughly, and, look! It is true; the thing has actually been done, this detestable thing in your midst, ¹⁵ then you shall certainly strike down the inhabitants of that town with the _⌊edge_⌋* of the sword; you shall destroy it and everything in it, its domestic animals with the _⌊edge_⌋* of the sword. ¹⁶ And then you shall gather all of its booty into the middle of its public square, and you shall burn the town and all of its war-booty totally for Yahweh your God, and it shall be _⌊a pile of rubble forever_⌋;* it shall not be built again. ¹⁷ And let not something cling to your hand from the things devoted to destruction, so that Yahweh may turn back _⌊from his burning anger_⌋,* and he may show compassion to you and he may continue to show compassion and so multiply you _⌊just as he swore_⌋* to your ancestors,* ¹⁸ if you listen to the voice of Yahweh your God, to keep all of his commandments that I am commanding to you _⌊today_⌋* so as to do the right thing in the eyes of Yahweh your God."

⁵ then you shall bring out that man or that woman who has* done this evil thing to your gates; that is, the man or the woman, and you shall stone them with stones _⌊to death_⌋.*

¹⁸ so that _⌊there is not_⌋* among you a man or a woman or a clan or a tribe _⌊whose heart_⌋* turns _⌊today_⌋* from being with Yahweh our God to go to serve the gods of these nations, so that there is not among you a root sprouting poison and wormwood.

²⁵ And they will say,* 'It is because they abandoned the covenant of Yahweh, the God of their ancestors,* which he _⌊made_⌋* with them _⌊when he brought them out_⌋* from the land of Egypt.

²⁰ For when I bring them* into the land that I swore to their* ancestors,* a land flowing with milk and honey, _⌊they will eat their fill_⌋,* and they* will become fat, and then they* will turn to other gods, and they will serve them, and they will spurn me, and they* will break my covenant.

¹¹ Israel has sinned and _⌊transgressed my covenant_⌋* that I commanded them. They have taken from the devoted things;* they have stolen and acted deceitfully, and they have put them among their belongings.

¹⁵ The one caught with the devoted things* will be burned with fire, he and all that belongs to him, because _⌊he transgressed the covenant_⌋* of Yahweh, and because he did a disgraceful thing in Israel." '"

¹⁶ If you transgress the covenant of Yahweh your God, which he commanded to you, and you go and serve other gods and bow down to them, _⌊Yahweh's anger will be kindled_⌋* against you, and you will perish quickly from the good land that he has given to you."

²⁰ _⌊So the anger of Yahweh burned_⌋* against Israel, and he said, "Because this people transgressed my covenant that I commanded their ancestors,* and have not obeyed my voice,

¹² because they did not listen to the voice of Yahweh their God, and they transgressed his covenant; all that he had commanded Moses, the servant of Yahweh, they did not listen to nor did they obey.

³² not like the covenant that I _⌊made_⌋* with their ancestors* on the day of my grasping them* by their hand, bringing them out from the land of Egypt, my covenant that they themselves broke, though I myself was a master over them," _⌊declares_⌋* Yahweh.

³⁸ And I will judge you with the judgment of women committing adultery and shedding blood, and I will give you the blood of rage and jealousy.

⁷ But like Adam, they transgressed the covenant; there they dealt faithlessly with me.

¹ Put to your lips the trumpet like a vulture over the house of Yahweh, because they have _⌊broken my covenant_⌋* and rebelled against my law.

⁹ not like the covenant which I made with their fathers on the day I took hold of them by my hand to lead them out of the land of Egypt, because they did not continue in my covenant and I disregarded them, says the Lord. ¹⁰ For this is the covenant that I will decree with the house of Israel after those days, says the Lord: I am putting my laws in their minds and I will write them on their hearts, and I will be _⌊their_⌋* God and they will be _⌊my_⌋* people.

¹⁹ _⌊And do this so that you do not lift_⌋* your eyes toward heaven and _⌊observe_⌋* the sun and the moon and the stars, all the host of the heaven, and be led astray and bow down to them and serve them, things that Yahweh your God has allotted to all of the peoples under all of the heaven.

³ He returned and rebuilt the high places which Hezekiah his father had destroyed. He erected altars for Baal and made a pole of Asherah worship just as Ahab king of Israel had made, and he bowed down to all of the host of heaven and served them.

²⁶ if I looked at the sun when it shone or* at the moon moving in splendor, ²⁷ and _⌊I was secretly enticed_⌋,* and _⌊my hand threw them a kiss_⌋,*

²² For I did not speak with your ancestors,* nor did I command them in the day of bringing them out from the land of Egypt, concerning the matter of burnt offering and sacrifice. ²³ But I only commanded them this word, _⌊saying_⌋,* 'Obey my voice, and I will be to you God, and you will be to me people, and you must walk in all of the way that I command you, so that it goes well with you.'

³¹ And they built the high place of Topheth, which is in the Valley of Ben Hinnom, to burn their sons and their daughters in the fire, which I have not commanded, and it did not come into my mind.*

² And they shall spread them out before the sun, and before the moon, and before all the host of heaven, which they have loved, and which they have served, and which they have gone after, and which they have inquired about, and to which they have bowed in worship. They shall not be gathered, and they shall not be buried; they will be like dung on the surface of the ground.

⁵ and they have built the high places of Baal, to burn their children in the fire, burnt offerings to Baal, which I commanded not, and I ordered not, and it did not come to my _⌊mind_⌋.*

³⁵ And they built the high places of Baal that are in the Valley of Ben Hinnom to present as offerings their sons and their daughters to Molech, which I had not commanded them, and it had not come to my _⌊mind_⌋* to do this detestable thing in order to cause Judah to sin."

¹⁶ And he brought me to the inner courtyard of the house of Yahweh, and look, at the doorway of the temple of Yahweh, between the portico and the altar, there were about twenty-five men with their backs to the temple of Yahweh and their faces toward the east, and they were bowing down toward the east before the sun.

¹² "If you hear in one of your towns which Yahweh your God is giving to you to live in, someone _⌊saying that_⌋* ¹³ _⌊worthless men_⌋* have gone out from your midst and have seduced the inhabitants of their town, _⌊saying_⌋,* 'Let us go and serve other gods!' whom you have not known, ¹⁴ then you shall inquire and examine and interrogate thoroughly, and, look! It is true; the thing has actually been done, this detestable thing in your midst,

¹⁸ Then judges shall make a thorough inquiry, and if it turns out* that the witness is a false witness and he testified falsely against his brother,

² The glory of God* conceals things, but the glory of kings searches out things.

⁵¹ "Our law does not condemn a man unless it first hears from him and knows what he is doing, does it?"*

¹⁴ "Bring the curser _⌊outside the camp_⌋,* and all the hearers shall place their hands on his head, and the whole community shall stone him.

¹⁶ And he who blasphemes Yahweh's name certainly shall be put to death; the whole community certainly shall stone him. As the alien, so the native shall be put to death at blaspheming his name.

¹⁰ And you shall stone him with stones and let him die, for he tried to seduce you from Yahweh your God, the one bringing you from the land of Egypt, from the house of slavery. ¹¹ And all of Israel shall hear, and they shall fear, and _⌊they shall not continue to act_⌋* according to this evil thing in your midst.

²¹ Then all the men of his city shall stone him with stones and let him die; and so you shall purge the evil from your midst, and all of Israel will hear, and they will fear.

²¹ and then they shall bring out the young woman to the doorway of the house of her father, and the men of her city shall stone her with stones, and she shall die, because she did a disgraceful thing in Israel _⌊by playing the harlot_⌋* in the house of her father, and so you shall purge the evil from your midst.

²⁴ then you shall bring out _⌊both of them_⌋* to the gate of that city, and you shall stone them with stones so that they shall die, the young woman because she did not cry out in the town, and the man because* he violated his neighbor's wife; and so you shall purge the evil from your midst.

²⁵ And Joshua said, "Why did you bring us trouble? Yahweh will bring you trouble on this day." And all Israel stoned them* with stones;* and they burned them with fire after they stoned them with stones.

³⁰ " 'If anyone kills a person, the killer will be put to death _⌊according to the testimony_⌋* of witnesses, but someone cannot die on testimony of one person.

¹⁵ _⌊The testimony of a single witness may not be used to convict_⌋* with respect to any crime and for any wrongdoing in any offense that a person* committed; on the _⌊evidence_⌋* of two witnesses or on the _⌊evidence_⌋* of three witnesses _⌊a charge shall be sustained_⌋.*

¹⁶ But if he does not listen, take with you in addition one or two others, so that by _⌊the testimony_⌋* of two or three witnesses every matter may be established.

¹⁷ And even in your law it is written that the testimony of two men is true.* ¹⁸ I am the one who testifies concerning myself, and the Father who sent me testifies concerning me."

¹ This is the third time I am coming to you. _⌊By the testimony_⌋* of two or three witnesses every word* will be established.

¹⁹ Do not accept an accusation against an elder except on the evidence of two or three witnesses.

²⁸ Anyone who rejected the law of Moses dies without mercy on the testimony of two or three witnesses.

⁵ But that prophet or the dreamer of that dream shall be executed, for he spoke falsely about Yahweh your God, the one bringing you out from the land of Egypt and the one redeeming you from the house of slavery, in order to seduce you from the way that Yahweh your God commanded you to go in it; so in this way you shall purge the evil from your midst.

⁹ But you shall certainly kill him; your hand shall be first against him to kill him and next the hand of all of the people.

¹² And the man who treats with contempt* so as not to listen to the priest who is standing to minister on behalf of Yahweh your God or to the judge, that man shall die; so you shall purge the evil from Israel.

¹⁹ then you shall do to him as he meant* to do to his brother, and so you shall purge the evil from your midst.

⁷ "If a man is _⌊caught_⌋* kidnapping somebody from among his countrymen,* the _⌊Israelites_⌋,* and he treats him as a slave or he sells him, then that kidnapper shall die, and so you shall purge the evil _⌊from among you_⌋.*

¹³ So then, hand over the men, _⌊the perverse lot_⌋,* who are in Gibeah, so that we may kill them and purge this wickedness from Israel." But the descendants* of Benjamin were not willing to listen to the voice of their relatives,* the _⌊Israelites_⌋.*

⁵⁸ And after they* had driven him* out of the city, they began to stone* him,* and the witnesses laid aside their cloaks at the feet of a young man named Saul. ⁵⁹ And they kept on stoning Stephen as he* was calling out and saying, "Lord Jesus, receive my spirit!"

¹³ But those outside God will judge. Remove the evil person _⌊from among yourselves_⌋*.

²⁶ And they judged the people all the time; the difficult issues* they would bring to Moses, and every minor issue they would judge themselves.

¹² " '_⌊Whoever strikes someone_⌋* and he dies will surely be put to death. ¹³ But if he did not lie in wait _⌊and it was an accident_⌋,* I will appoint for you a place to which he may flee. ¹⁴ But if a man schemes against his neighbor to kill him by treachery,* you will take him from my altar to die.

²⁰ And if a man strikes his male slave or his female slave with the rod and he dies under his hand, he will surely be avenged.

²² " 'And if men fight and they injure a pregnant woman, and her children go out and there is not serious injury, he will surely be fined as the woman's husband demands concerning him _⌊and as the judges determine_⌋.*

²⁸ " 'And if an ox gores a man or a woman and he dies, the ox will surely be stoned, and its meat will not be eaten, and the owner of the ox is innocent.

² " 'If a thief is found in the act of breaking in and he is struck and he dies, there is not bloodguilt for him.

¹¹ you will select for yourselves cities for your cities of refuge, that a killer who has killed a person unintentionally can flee there.

¹⁶ " 'But if he hit him with an object of iron, so that he dies, the killer must surely be put to death.

¹⁹ The blood avenger himself will put the killer to death; he must put him to death when meeting him. ²⁰ If he shoves him in hatred, or he throws something at him with intention, and he dies, ²¹ or if he hits him in hostility with his hand, and he dies, the one that struck him will put to death the killer when meeting him. ²² " 'Or if in an instant he shoved him, not in hostility, or threw something at him without intention, ²³ or with any stone, without seeing it dropped on him so that he dies, while he was not seeking his injury, ²⁴ then the community will judge between the striker and between the blood avenger according to these ordinances. ²⁵ The community will deliver the killer from the hand of the blood avenger, and the community will restore him to the city of his refuge to which he fled; and he will live there in it until the death of the high priest who was anointed with holy oil. ²⁶ But if the killer surely goes out of the territory of the city of his refuge to which he fled, ²⁷ and the blood avenger finds him outside the territory of the city of his refuge, and the blood avenger kills the killer, _⌊he will not be guilty of blood_⌋* ²⁸ because he must live in the city of his refuge until the death of the high priest. But after the death of the high priest the killer will return to the land of his property. ²⁹ These things will be as a decree of justice for you for your generations in all your dwellings. ³⁰ " 'If anyone kills a person, the killer will be put to death _⌊according to the testimony_⌋* of witnesses, but someone cannot die on testimony of one person. ³¹ Also, you will not take a ransom payment for the life of a killer who is guilty of death; indeed, he must surely be put to death. ³² You will not take a ransom payment for the one that flees to the city of his refuge, so that he may return to live in the land before the death of the priest. ³³ So you will not pollute the land in which you are; because blood pollutes the land, and no atonement can be made for the land for the blood that is poured out on it except with the blood of the one who poured it out. ³⁴ You will not defile the land on which you are living because I am living in the midst of it; I am Yahweh; I am living in the midst of the _⌊Israelites_⌋.'"*

¹⁷ You must not _⌊be partial_⌋* _⌊in your judgment_⌋; * hear out the small person as also the great person; _⌊do not be intimidated by any person_⌋,* because the judgment is God's; and the case that is too difficult* for you, bring it to me, and I will hear it out.'

⁵ _⌊But only_⌋* to the place that Yahweh your God will choose from all of your tribes to place his name there as his dwelling shall you seek, and there you shall go.

⁴ "Now this is the case of the manslayer who may flee there and live there who has killed his neighbor _⌊unintentionally_⌋,* and he did not hate him _⌊previously_⌋.*

¹⁰ Do this so that innocent blood will not be shed* in the midst of your land that Yahweh your God is giving to you as an inheritance and thereby bloodguilt would be on you.* ¹¹ But if someone hates* his neighbor and lies in wait for him and rises up* against him _⌊and murders him_⌋,* and the murderer flees to one of these cities,

¹⁷ then the two men _⌊to whom the legal dispute pertains_⌋* shall stand _⌊before_⌋* Yahweh, _⌊before_⌋* the priests and the judges who are in office in those days.

¹⁶ Then two prostitutes came to the king, and they stood before him. ¹⁷ The one woman said, "Please my lord, I and this woman are living in one house, and I gave birth, with her in the house. ¹⁸ It happened on the third day after my giving birth, this woman also gave birth, and we were together. There was not anyone with us in the house, only the two of us were in the house. ¹⁹ Then the son of this woman died in the night because she laid on him. ²⁰ So she got up in the middle of the night, and she took my son from beside me while your servant was asleep, and she put him in her lap, and she put her dead son in my lap. ²¹ When I got up in the morning to nurse my son, behold, he was dead! When I looked closely at him in the morning, behold, it was not my son whom I had borne." ²² Then the other woman said, "No, for my son is the living one, and your son is the dead one." The other kept on saying, "No, for your son is the dead one, and my son is the living one," and so they argued in front of the king. ²³ Then the king said, "This one is saying, 'This is my son, the living one, but your son is the dead one,' and the other one keeps saying, 'But no! Your son is the dead one, and my son is living!'" ²⁴ So the king said, "Bring me a sword," and they brought the sword before the king. ²⁵ Then the king said, "Divide the living child into two, and give half to the one and half to the other." ²⁶ Then the woman whose son was the living one spoke to the king because her compassion was aroused for her son, and she said, "Please, my lord, give her the living child, but certainly do not kill him!" The other one was saying, "As for me, so for you! Divide him!" ²⁷ Then the king answered and said, "Give the living child to her, and do not kill him; she is his mother." ²⁸ When all of Israel heard the judgment that the king had rendered, they _⌊stood in awe_⌋* of the king, because they realized that the wisdom of God was in him to execute justice.

⁸ Moreover, Jehoshaphat appointed in Jerusalem some of the Levites and the priests and heads of the _⌊families_⌋* of Israel as judges and to decide legal disputes for Yahweh. And they sat* in Jerusalem. ⁹ And he commanded them, saying, "Thus you must do in the fear of Yahweh in faithfulness and with a whole heart. ¹⁰ Any legal dispute that comes before you from your brothers who live in their cities concerning bloodguilt, law, commandment, statutes, and justice, you must warn them, so that they do not incur guilt before Yahweh, and that wrath may not come upon you and your brothers. Thus you must do that you do not incur guilt.

⁴ where the tribes go up, the tribes of Yah* as a testimony for Israel, to give thanks to the name of Yahweh. ⁵ For there the thrones sit* for judgment, thrones of David's house.

¹¹ "Thus says Yahweh of hosts: 'Ask now the priests for a ruling:*

⁷ For the lips of the priest should guard knowledge, and they should seek instruction* from his mouth, for he is the messenger of Yahweh of hosts.

¹⁷ then the two men _⌊to whom the legal dispute pertains_⌋* shall stand _⌊before_⌋* Yahweh, _⌊before_⌋* the priests and the judges who are in office in those days. ¹⁸ Then judges shall make a thorough inquiry, and if it turns out* that the witness is a false witness and he testified falsely against his brother, ¹⁹ then you shall do to him as he meant* to do to his brother, and so you shall purge the evil from your midst. ²⁰ _⌊And the rest_⌋* shall hear and shall fear, and _⌊they shall not continue to do such a thing again_⌋* as this evil thing in your midst. ²¹ _⌊You must show no pity_⌋:* life for life, eye for eye, tooth for tooth, hand for hand, foot for foot."

¹⁸ Then they said, "Come and let us plan plans against Jeremiah, for instruction will not be lost from the priest, nor advice from the wise man, nor the word from the prophet. Come and _⌊let us bring charges against him_⌋,* and let us not listen attentively to any of his words."

²⁴ And at a legal dispute they themselves shall stand to judge; employing* my judgments they shall judge it, and with respect to my laws and my statutes. All my festivals they shall keep and my Sabbaths they shall consecrate.

² "The kingdom of heaven may be compared to a man—a king—who gave a wedding celebration for his son. ³ And he sent his slaves to summon those who had been invited to the wedding celebration, and they did not want to come.

³² "So you must be careful to do just as Yahweh your God commanded you; you shall not turn to the right or to the left.

²⁰ so as not to exalt his heart above his countrymen* and not to turn aside from the commandment to the right or to the left, so that _⌊he may reign long over his kingdom_⌋,* he and his children in the midst of Israel."

¹ "When a legal dispute _⌊takes place_⌋* between men and they come near to the court, and the judges judge with respect to them, then they shall declare the righteous to be in the right and they shall condemn the wicked,

¹⁴ And you shall not turn aside from _⌊any of_⌋* the words that I am commanding you _⌊today_⌋* to the right or left by going after other gods to serve them.

⁷ Only be strong and very courageous _⌊to observe diligently the whole law_⌋* that Moses my servant commanded you. Do not turn aside from it, to the right or left, so that you may succeed _⌊wherever you go_⌋.*

⁶ Be very strong to observe carefully all that is written in the scroll of the law of Moses so as not to turn aside from it, to the right or left,

¹⁹ The king asked, "Was the hand of Joab with you in all of this?" The woman answered and said, "_⌊As your soul lives_⌋,* my lord the king, surely one cannot go to the right or to the left from all that my lord the king has spoken. Yes, your servant Joab himself commanded me, and he put all of these words in the mouth of your servant.

²⁷ Do not swerve right or left; remove your foot from evil.

⁸ But you, you have turned from the way; you have caused many to stumble by your instruction;* you have ruined the covenant of Levi," says Yahweh of hosts. ⁹ "And in turn I have made you despised and humbled before all the people, inasmuch as you are not keeping* my way, but are _⌊favoring your own instruction_⌋."*

¹ Let every person be subject to the governing authorities, for there is no authority except by God, and those that exist are put in place by God. ² So then, the one who resists authority resists the ordinance which is from God, and those who resist will receive condemnation on themselves. ³ For rulers are not a cause of terror for a good deed, but for bad conduct. So do you want not to be afraid of authority? Do what is good, and you will have praise from it, ⁴ for it is God's servant to you for what is good. But if you do what is bad, be afraid, because it does not bear the sword to no purpose. For it is God's servant, the one who avenges for punishment on the one who does what is bad. ⁵ Therefore it is necessary to be in subjection, not only because of wrath but also because of conscience. ⁶ For because of this you also pay taxes, for the authorities* are servants of God, busily engaged in this very thing.

¹ Remind them to be subject to the rulers and to the authorities, to obey, to be prepared for every good work,

¹³ Subject yourselves to every human authority for the sake of the Lord, whether to a king* as having supreme authority, ¹⁴ or to governors as those sent out by him for the punishment of those who do evil and the praise of those who do good. ¹⁵ For the will of God is as follows: by* doing good to silence the ignorance of foolish people.

¹⁰ and especially those who go after the flesh in defiling lust* and who despise authority.
Bold and arrogant, they do not tremble in awe as they* blaspheme majestic beings,

⁸ Despite that, in the same way also these men, because of their* dreams, defile the flesh and reject authority and blaspheme majestic beings.

³⁰ But the one _⌊who acts presumptuously_⌋* from among the native or alien blasphemes against Yahweh, and that person must be cut off from the midst of the people.

⁸ At that time Yahweh set apart the tribe of Levi to carry the ark of the covenant of Yahweh to stand _⌊before_⌋* Yahweh, to serve him and to bless the people in his name until this day.

¹¹ And all of Israel shall hear, and they shall fear, and _⌊they shall not continue to act_⌋* according to this evil thing in your midst.

⁷ The hand of the witnesses shall be first against the person* to kill the person,* and afterward the hands* of all the people, and so you shall purge the evil from your midst.

⁵ For Yahweh your God has chosen him from among all your tribes to stand to minister in the name of Yahweh, he and his sons _⌊forever_⌋.*

⁷ and he may minister in the name of Yahweh his God, just like all his brothers, _⌊the Levites who stand there_⌋* _⌊before_⌋* Yahweh.

²⁰ However, the prophet that behaves presumptuously by speaking a word in my name that I have not commanded him to speak, and who speaks in the name of other gods, then that prophet shall die.'

⁸ Anyone who did not come within three days, by decision of the officials and elders, all of his possessions would be devoted to God, and he himself would be excluded from the assembly of exiles.

¹³ Also, keep back your servant from arrogant sins;* let them not rule over me. Then I shall be blameless, and I shall be innocent of great transgression.

¹¹ With the punishment of a scoffer, the simple will become wise, and with the instruction of the wise, he will obtain knowledge.

³ "From the thirteenth year of Josiah, the son of Amon, the king of Judah, even up to this day, these twenty-three years* the word of Yahweh has come to me, and _⌊I have spoken to you over and over again_⌋,* but you have not listened. ⁴ And though Yahweh has sent all his servants the prophets to you _⌊over and over again_⌋* you have not listened, and you have not inclined your ear to hear, ⁵ _⌊saying_⌋,* 'Turn back please, each one from his evil way, and from the evil of your deeds, and live on the land that Yahweh has given to you and to your ancestors* from a long time back and until forever, ⁶ and you must not go after other gods to serve them, and to bow in worship to them, and you must not provoke me to anger with the work of your hands, then I will not do something bad to you.' ⁷ 'Yet you have not listened to me,' _⌊declares_⌋* Yahweh, 'so that you* have provoked me to anger with the work of your hands for your own harm.' ⁸ _⌊Therefore_⌋* thus says Yahweh of hosts, 'Because you have not obeyed my words, ⁹ look, I am going to send and take all the clans* of the north,' _⌊declares_⌋* Yahweh, 'and I will send* to Nebuchadnezzar the king of Babylon, my servant, and I will bring them against this land, and against its inhabitants, and against all these nations all around, and I will destroy them, and I will make them a horror, and an object of hissing, and _⌊everlasting ruins_⌋.* ¹⁰ And I will exterminate from them the sound of jubilation, and the sound of joy, the voice of the bridegroom, and the voice of the bride, the sound of the millstones, and the light of the lamp. ¹¹ And all this land will become a site of ruins, a desolation, and these nations will serve the king of Babylon seventy years.* ¹² _⌊And then_⌋* when the seventy years* are fulfilled, I will punish the king of Babylon and that nation,' _⌊declares_⌋* Yahweh, 'for their iniquity, and the land of the Chaldeans, and I will make it _⌊an everlasting waste_⌋.* ¹³ And I will bring upon that land all my words that I have spoken against it, everything that is written in this scroll which Jeremiah prophesied against all the nations. ¹⁴ For many nations and great kings will let them work, even them, and I will repay them according to their deeds, and according to the work of their hands.'"

⁴ Yet, let no one contend, and let no one accuse, for with you, O priest, is my contention.*

¹⁴ And whoever does not welcome you or listen to your words, shake off the dust from your feet as you* are going out of that house or that* town.

¹⁶ The one who listens to you listens to me, and the one who rejects you rejects me. But the one who rejects me rejects the one who sent me."

⁴⁸ The one who rejects me and does not accept my words has one who judges him; the word that I have spoken will judge him on the last day.

²³ If you forgive the sins of any, they are forgiven them. If you retain the sins* of any, they are retained."

² For you know what commands we gave to you through the Lord Jesus.

⁸ Therefore the one who rejects this is not rejecting man, but God, who also gives his Holy Spirit to you.

²⁰ Reprove those who sin in the presence of all, in order that the rest also may experience fear.

²⁶ For if* we keep on sinning deliberately after receiving the knowledge of the truth, there no longer remains a sacrifice for sins, ²⁷ but a certain fearful expectation of judgment and a fury of fire that is about to consume the adversaries. ²⁸ Anyone who rejected the law of Moses dies without mercy on the testimony of two or three witnesses. ²⁹ How much worse punishment do you think the person will be considered worthy of who treats with disdain the Son of God and who considers ordinary the blood of the covenant by which he was made holy and who insults the Spirit of grace?

³⁰ But the one _⌊who acts presumptuously_⌋* from among the native or alien blasphemes against Yahweh, and that person must be cut off from the midst of the people. ³¹ Because he despised the word of Yahweh and broke his command, that person will be surely cut off and bear the guilt.'"

²⁰ _⌊And the rest_⌋* shall hear and shall fear, and _⌊they shall not continue to do such a thing again_⌋* as this evil thing in your midst.

³⁴ "When you come into the land of Canaan, which I am about to give to you as your possession, and I put _⌊mildew_⌋* in a house in the land of your possession,

¹ "When Yahweh your God brings you into the land that you are about to enter _⌊into it_⌋* to take possession of it, and he drives* out many nations _⌊before you_⌋,* the Hittites* and the Girgashites* and the Amorites* and the Canaanites* and the Hivites* and the Jebusites,* seven nations mightier and more numerous than you,

³¹ For you are now about to cross the Jordan to go to take possession of the land that Yahweh, your God, is giving to you, and you will take possession of it and live in it,

⁹ For you have not come up to now to the resting place and to the inheritance that Yahweh your God is giving to you. ¹⁰ But you will cross the Jordan, and you will settle in the land that Yahweh your God is giving you as an inheritance, and he will give rest to you from all your enemies from all around, and you will live securely,

⁹ "When you come to the land that Yahweh your God is giving to you, you must not learn to do like the detestable practices of those nations.

¹ "_⌊And then_⌋* when you come to the land that Yahweh your God is giving to you as an inheritance, and you take possession of it and you settle in it,

⁹ And he brought us to this place and gave to us this land, a land flowing with milk and honey.

¹³ "Remember the word that Moses Yahweh's servant commanded you, saying, 'Yahweh your God is giving rest to you, and he is giving* you this land.'

⁵ They said to him, "Look, you are old and your sons do not follow in your ways. So then appoint a king for us to judge* us, like all the nations. ⁶ But the matter _⌊was displeasing to Samuel_⌋* when they said, "Give us a king to judge* us," so Samuel prayed to Yahweh. ⁷ Then Yahweh said to Samuel, "Listen to the voice of the people concerning all that they say to you; for they have not rejected you, but they have rejected me from being king over them.

¹⁹ However, the people refused to listen to the voice of Samuel and they said, "No, but there must be a king over us, ²⁰ so that we _⌊also_⌋* may be like all the nations, and our king may rule us and go out before us and fight our battles."

¹⁹ Then all the people said to Samuel, "Pray for your servants to Yahweh your God so that we will not die, because we have added to all our sins by requesting a king for ourselves."

¹⁵ Now Yahweh _⌊had revealed this to_⌋* Samuel the day before Saul arrived, saying, ¹⁶ "This time tomorrow I will send to you a man from the land of Benjamin, and you must anoint him as leader over my people Israel. He will deliver my people from the hand of the Philistines. For I have seen the suffering of my people, because their cry of distress has come to me." ¹⁷ When Samuel saw Saul, Yahweh answered him, "Here is the man about whom I told you! This is the one who will govern my people."

²⁴ Then Samuel said to all the people, "Do you see him whom Yahweh has chosen? For there is no one like him among all the people!" And all the people shouted and said, "Long live the king!"

¹² So he sent and brought him. Now he was ruddy with beautiful eyes and of _⌊handsome_⌋* appearance. And Yahweh said, "Arise, anoint him, for this is he." ¹³ So Samuel took the horn of oil and anointed him in the midst of his brothers. Then the Spirit of Yahweh rushed upon David from that day _⌊on_⌋.* Then Samuel got up and went to Ramah.

² _⌊For some time_⌋,* when Saul was king over us, _⌊you were leading Israel in and out_⌋.* Yahweh had said to you, 'You shall be the shepherd of my people Israel, and you will be the leader over Israel.'"

²³ And these are the numbers of the chiefs of those prepared for the army who came to David at Hebron to turn the kingdom of Saul over to him according to the word of Yahweh.

¹⁰ He himself will build a house for my name, and he himself will be to me a son, and I will be to him as a father, and I will establish the throne of his kingdom over Israel forever.'

⁵ And from all my sons—for Yahweh has given many sons to me—he has chosen Solomon my son to sit on the throne of the kingdom of Yahweh over Israel.

² The kings of the earth establish themselves, and the rulers conspire* together against Yahweh and his anointed:

⁶ "But as for me, I have set my king on Zion, my holy mountain."

²⁵ Restrain your foot from being barefoot, and your throat from thirst. But you said, 'It is hopeless. No! For I have loved strangers, and after them I will go.'*

²¹ And their noble will be from them, and their ruler will come out from their midst. And I will bring him near and he will approach me. For who is he that would pledge his heart to approach me?' _⌊declares_⌋* Yahweh.

¹⁷ Therefore tell us what you think. Is it permitted to pay taxes to Caesar or not?"

¹⁷ And when Pharaoh released the people, God did not lead them the way of the land of the Philistines, though it was nearer, because God said, "Lest the people change their mind when they see war and return to Egypt."

¹³ And Moses said to the people, "You must not be afraid. Stand still and see the salvation of Yahweh, which he will accomplish for you today, because the Egyptians whom you see today you will see never again.

³ Why did Yahweh bring us into this land to fall by the sword? Our wives and our little children will become plunder; would it not be better for us to return to Egypt?" ⁴ _⌊They said to each other_⌋,* "Let us appoint a leader, and we will return to Egypt."

⁶⁸ And Yahweh shall bring you back to Egypt in ships by the route that I _⌊promised_⌋* to you that '_⌊You shall not see it again_⌋!'* And you shall sell yourself there to your enemies as slaves and as female slaves, but there will not be a buyer."

¹¹ He said, "This will be the custom of the king who will reign over you: he will take your sons and appoint them to his chariots and his horsemen, and they will run before his chariots.

⁴ David captured from him one thousand and seven hundred horsemen and twenty thousand _⌊foot soldiers_⌋.* David hamstrung all the chariot horses, but _⌊from them_⌋* he spared a hundred chariot horses.

⁵ Now Adonijah the son of Haggith was exalting himself, saying, "I will be king," so he prepared for himself a chariot and horsemen and fifty men running before him.

²⁶ Now Solomon had forty thousand stalls of horses for his war chariots and twelve thousand horsemen.

²⁶ Solomon gathered chariots and horses; he had fourteen hundred chariots and twelve thousand horses. He stationed them in the cities of the chariots and with the king in Jerusalem. ²⁷ The king made the silver in Jerusalem as the stones, and the cedars he made as the sycamore fig trees which are in the Shephelah in abundance. ²⁸ The import of the horses which were Solomon's was from Egypt and from Kue; the traders of the king received horses from Kue at a price.

²⁵ And Solomon had four thousand stalls for horses and chariots, and twelve thousand horsemen. And he stationed them in the chariot cities and with the king in Jerusalem.

⁷ _⌊Some boast in chariots and others in horses_⌋,* but we boast in the name of Yahweh, our God.

¹ Ah! Those who go down to Egypt for help!
They rely on horses
and trust in chariots because they are many, and in horsemen because they are very numerous, and they do not look to the holy one of Israel, and they do not consult Yahweh. ² And indeed, he is wise, and he brings disaster, and he does not remove his words, and he will rise against the house of evildoers and against the help of workers of iniquity. ³ And the Egyptians are human and not God, and their horses are flesh and not spirit. And Yahweh stretches out his hand, and the helper will stumble, and the one being helped will fall, and together all of them will come to an end.*

⁸ And now please make a wager with my master the king of Assyria, and I will give you two thousand horses, that is, if you are able _⌊put_⌋* riders for yourself on them! ⁹ But how can you drive back _⌊one governor among the least of my master's servants_⌋,* when* you trust in Egypt for chariots* and horsemen?

¹⁴ saying, "No, for we will go to the land of Egypt where we will not see war, and we will not hear the sound of a horn, and we will not be hungry for bread, and there we will stay," ¹⁵ then _⌊therefore_⌋* hear the word of Yahweh, O remnant of Judah. Thus says Yahweh of hosts, the God of Israel: "_⌊If you are determined_⌋* to go to Egypt, and you go to dwell as aliens there, ¹⁶ then it will be that the sword that you are in fear of will overtake you there in the land of Egypt, and the famine that you are anxious of will pursue after you there into Egypt, and there you will die.

¹⁵ But he rebelled against him by sending his messengers to Egypt to give to him horses and a large army. Will he succeed? Will he escape doing these things, and can he break the covenant and escape?

⁵ He will return* to the land of Egypt, and Assyria will be his king,* because they refused to return.

³ Assyria will not save us; we will not ride on horses,* and we will say no more, "Our God," to the work of our hands because in you the fatherless child finds mercy.

²⁴ Therefore a man shall leave his father and his mother and shall cling to his wife, and they shall be as one flesh.

² And sons were born to David in Hebron; his firstborn was Amnon by Ahinoam _⌊from Jezreel_⌋*. ³ His second was Kileab by Abigail the wife of Nabal the Carmelite; the third was Absalom the son of Maacah, who was the daughter of Talmai the king of Geshur. ⁴ The fourth was Adonijah the son of Haggith; the fifth was Shephatiah the son of Abital. ⁵ The sixth was Ithream by Eglah the wife of David. These were born to David in Hebron.

²¹ All of the drinking vessels of King Solomon were gold, and all the vessels for the House of the Forest of Lebanon were pure gold. There was no silver; it was not considered as something valuable in the days of Solomon.

¹ King Solomon loved many foreign women: the daughter of Pharaoh, Moabite, Ammonite, Edomite, Sidonian, Hittite; ² from the nations which Yahweh had said to the _⌊Israelites_⌋,* "You shall not _⌊marry them_⌋,* and they shall not _⌊marry you_⌋.* They will certainly turn your heart after other gods." But Solomon clung to them to love. ³ He had seven hundred princesses and three hundred concubines, and his wives turned his heart. ⁴ It happened at the time of Solomon's old age that his wives guided his heart after other gods, and his heart was not fully with Yahweh his God as the heart of David his father had been.

²⁶ Did not King Solomon of Israel sin in this way? And among the many nations there was no king like him, and he was beloved by his God, and God made him king over all Israel. Yet the foreign women made even him sin.

¹⁰ Do not trust in extortion, and do not put vain confidence in robbery. If wealth increases, do not set your heart on it.

⁸ Keep falsehood and a _⌊lying word_⌋* far from me; do not give me poverty or wealth; provide me with food only for my need. ⁹ Or else I will be satisfied and will deny him and say "Who is Yahweh?" Or* I will be poor and will steal and profane the name of my God.

¹⁵ _⌊Did not one God make them?_⌋* But a remnant of the spirit is his.* And what does the one God desire? An offspring of God.* _⌊You must be attentive to_⌋* your spirit, and you must not be unfaithful to the wife of your youth.

¹⁹ "Do not store up for yourselves treasures on earth, where moth and consuming insect* destroy and where thieves break in and steal, ²⁰ but store up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where neither moth nor consuming insect* destroy and where thieves do not break in or steal.

²² And what was sown into the thorn plants—this is the one who hears the word, and the anxiety of this world* and the deceitfulness of wealth choke the word and it becomes unproductive.

⁵ and said, 'On account of this a man will leave his* father and his* mother and will be joined to his wife, and the two will become one flesh'?*

²³ And Jesus said to his disciples, "Truly I say to you that with difficulty a rich person will enter into the kingdom of heaven! ²⁴ And again I say to you, it is easier for a camel to go through the eye of a needle than a rich person into* the kingdom of God."

¹⁵ And he said to them, "Watch out and guard yourselves from all greediness, because not even when someone has an abundance _⌊does_⌋* his life consist of his possessions."

⁹ But those who want to be rich fall into temptation and a trap and many foolish and harmful desires, which plunge those people into ruin and destruction.

¹⁷ Command those who are rich in this present age not to be proud and not to put their hope in the uncertainty of riches, but in God, who provides us all things richly for enjoyment,

⁹ So Moses wrote this law, and he gave it to the priests, the descendants* of Levi, the ones carrying the ark of the covenant of Yahweh, and to all the elders of Israel.

²⁴ _⌊And then when Moses finished writing_⌋* the words of this law on the scroll _⌊until they were complete_⌋,* ²⁵ then Moses commanded the Levites carrying the ark of the covenant of Yahweh, _⌊saying_⌋,* ²⁶ "Take the scroll of this law and put it at the side of the ark of the covenant of Yahweh your God, and it will be there as a witness against you.

¹² Then he brought out the son of the king, put the crown on him with the testimony, and they made him king, anointed him, clapped their hands, and said, "Long live the king!"

⁸ Then Hilkiah the high priest said to Shaphan the secretary, "I have found the scroll of the Torah in the temple of Yahweh," and Hilkiah gave the scroll to Shaphan and he read it.

¹⁵ And Hilkiah answered and said to Shaphan the scribe, "I have found a scroll of the law in the house of Yahweh!" Then Hilkiah gave the scroll to Shaphan.

¹⁰ Remember the day that you stood _⌊before_⌋* Yahweh your God at Horeb _⌊when Yahweh said to me_⌋,* 'Summon for me the people so that I can tell them my words, that they may learn to fear me all of the days they are alive on the earth and so that they may teach their children.'

⁶ And these words that I am commanding you _⌊today_⌋* shall be on* your heart.* ⁷ And you shall recite them to your children, and you shall talk about them at the time of your living in your house and at the time of your going on the road and at the time of your lying down and at the time of your rising up. ⁸ And you shall bind them as a sign on your hand, and they shall be as an emblem between your eyes. ⁹ And you shall write them on the doorframe of your house and on your gates.

¹⁸ "And you shall put these, my words, on your heart and on your inner self,* and you shall bind them as a sign on your hand and let them be as an emblem between your eyes.

⁸ The scroll of this law will not depart from your mouth; you will meditate on it day and night so that _⌊you may observe diligently all that is written_⌋* in it. For then you will succeed in your ways and prosper.

² Instead, in the law of Yahweh is his delight, and on his law he meditates day and night.

⁹⁷ How I love your law! The whole day it is my meditation. ⁹⁸ Your commands make me wiser than my enemies, because they* are ever with me. ⁹⁹ I have more insight than all my teachers, for your testimonies are my meditation. ¹⁰⁰ I understand more than the elders, for I keep your precepts.

³⁹ You search* the scriptures because you think that you have eternal life in them, and it is these that testify about me.

¹⁵ and that from childhood you have known the holy writings that are able to make you wise for salvation through faith in Christ Jesus. ¹⁶ All scripture is inspired by God and profitable for teaching, for reproof, for correction, for training in righteousness, ¹⁷ in order that the person of God may be competent, equipped for every good work.

² You must not add to the word that I am commanding you, and you shall not take away from it in order to keep* the commands of Yahweh your God that I am commanding you to observe.

² And you shall remember all of the way that Yahweh your God led you during these forty years in the desert in order to humble you and to test you to know what is in your heart, whether you would diligently keep his commandments or not.

¹³ and your herds and your flocks have multiplied, and _⌊you have accumulated silver and gold_⌋,* and all that _⌊you have_⌋* has multiplied, ¹⁴ then your heart _⌊becomes proud_⌋* and you forget Yahweh your God, _⌊the one who brought you out_⌋* from the land of Egypt, from the house of slavery,

²⁵ You shall not eat it, so that _⌊it will go well_⌋* for you and your children after you, because then you will be doing what is* right in the eyes of Yahweh.

²⁸ _⌊Be careful to obey_⌋* all these things that I am commanding you, so that _⌊it will go well_⌋* for you and for your children after you _⌊forever_⌋,* because then you will be doing what is* good and right* in the eyes of Yahweh your God.

³² * All of the things* that I am commanding you, _⌊you must diligently observe_⌋;* you shall not add to it, and you shall not take away from it."

¹¹ And so according to _⌊the instruction of the law_⌋* that they teach you and according to the decisions that they say to you, you shall do; you shall not turn from the word that they tell you to the right or to the left.

¹³ Then Samuel said to Saul, "You have behaved foolishly! You have not kept the command of Yahweh your God which he commanded you. For then, Yahweh would have established your kingdom over Israel forever. ¹⁴ But now, your kingdom will not endure. Yahweh has sought for himself a man according to his own heart, and Yahweh has appointed him as leader over his people, because you have not kept what Yahweh commanded you."

²³ For rebellion is like the sin of divination; arrogance is like iniquity and idolatry. Because you have rejected the word of Yahweh, he has rejected you from being king!"

¹² However, I will not do it in your days, for the sake of David your father; from the hand of your son I will tear it away. ¹³ Yet all of the kingdom I will not tear away. I will give one tribe to your son for the sake of my servant David and for the sake of Jerusalem which I have chosen."

³⁴ But I will not take all of the kingdom from his hand, but I will make him a leader all the days of his life for the sake of David my servant whom I chose, who kept my commandments and my ordinances.

³⁶ To his son I will give one tribe in order to be a lamp for my servant David, always before my face, in Jerusalem the city in which I have chosen to place my name.

⁵ because David did right in the eyes of Yahweh and he didn't turn aside from all that he commanded him all the days of his life, except in the matter of Uriah the Hittite.

³⁰ Yahweh said to Jehu, "Because you have done well by doing right in my eyes and you have done to the house of Ahab according to all that was in my heart; therefore, sons of the fourth generation will sit for you on the throne of Israel."

¹⁰ You have indeed defeated Edom and your heart is lifted up; enjoy the honor and stay home. Why should you provoke trouble so that you fall and Judah with you?"

¹⁹ Look, you say that you have struck Edom, and your heart has lifted you up to boast. Now remain at your home. Why stir up disaster that you fall, you and Judah with you?"

¹⁶ But on account of his strength his heart grew proud unto destruction. And he acted unfaithfully against Yahweh his God and went into the temple of Yahweh to offer an incense offering on the altar.

²⁵ But Hezekiah did not reciprocate according to the benefit placed upon him, because his heart became proud. So wrath was upon him and upon Judah and Jerusalem. ²⁶ But Hezekiah humbled himself with respect to the arrogance of his heart, he and the inhabitants of Jerusalem, so that the wrath of Yahweh did not come upon them in the days of Hezekiah.

¹² And when he was in distress he entreated Yahweh his God and greatly humbled himself before the God of his ancestors*

¹⁹ And his prayer, and how he* responded to him, all his sin and his unfaithful acts, and the places where he built the high places and set up Asherahs and idols before he humbled himself, behold, they are written in the words of the seers.

²³ And he did not humble himself before Yahweh, as Manasseh his father humbled himself, but Amon himself multiplied his guilt.

²⁷ because your heart was responsive and you humbled yourself before God when you heard his words against this place and against its inhabitants and you humbled yourself before me and tore your garments and wept before me, now I also have heard,' _⌊declares_⌋* Yahweh.

¹¹ Moreover, your servant is warned* by them; in keeping them is great reward.

¹ A song of ascents. Of David.*
My heart is not haughty nor my eyes _⌊arrogant_⌋.* And I do not _⌊concern myself_⌋* with things too great and difficult for me. ² Rather I have soothed and quieted my soul, like a weaned child with its mother, like the weaned child is my soul with me.

¹² If your sons will heed my covenant and my testimonies that I will teach them, their sons also forever will sit on your throne."

²⁷ The fear of Yahweh adds life, but the years of the wicked are shortened.

²⁴ For riches are not forever, nor a crown for generation after generation.

¹³ But it will not go well with the wicked, and they will not prolong their days, like the shadow; because there is no fearing _⌊God's presence_⌋.*

¹² For there is a day for Yahweh of hosts against all of the proud and the lofty and against all that is lifted up and humble,*

²⁰ But _⌊when_⌋* his heart became arrogant and his spirit became hard so as to act proudly, he was deposed from the throne of his kingdom and the* glory _⌊was taken away from him_⌋.* ²¹ And he was driven away _⌊from human society_⌋* and his mind was made like the animals* and his dwelling was with the wild asses; and _⌊he was given_⌋* grass like oxen to eat, and with* the dew of heaven his body was bathed, until he acknowledged that the Most High God is sovereign over the kingdom of humankind, and _⌊whoever_⌋* he wants he sets over it. ²² "But you his _⌊successor_⌋,* Belshazzar, have not humbled your heart _⌊even though_⌋* you knew all this. ²³ And now you have exalted yourself against the Lord of heaven, and the vessels of his temple you have brought in before you, and you and your lords,* your wives and your concubines, have been drinking wine from* them, and you have praised the gods of silver, gold, bronze, iron, wood, and stone* that do not see and do not hear and do not know, but the God _⌊who holds your life in his hand_⌋* and all of your ways _⌊come from him_⌋,* you have not honored.

⁴ Look! His spirit within him is puffed up; it is not upright. But the righteous shall live by his faithfulness.

⁷ even because of the extraordinary degree of the revelations. Therefore, so that I would not exalt myself, a thorn in the flesh was given to me, a messenger of Satan, in order that it would torment me so that I would not exalt myself.

⁵ In the same way, younger men, be subject to the elders, and all of you clothe yourselves with humility toward one another, because God opposes the proud, but gives grace to the humble.
