And the sons of Dedan were Asshurim and Letushim and Leummim. ⁴ And the sons of Midian were Ephah, Epher, Hanoch, Abidah, and Eldaah. All of these were the children of Keturah. ⁵ And Abraham gave all he had to Isaac. ⁶ But to the sons of Abraham's concubines Abraham gave gifts. And while he was still living he sent them away eastward, away from his son Isaac, to the land of the east. ⁷ Now these are the days of the years of _⌊the life of Abraham_⌋:* one hundred and seventy-five years. ⁸ And Abraham passed away and died in a good old age, old and full of years. And he was gathered to his people. ⁹ And Isaac and Ishmael his sons buried him in the cave of Machpelah, in the field of Ephron, son of Zohar the Hittite, that was east of Mamre, ¹⁰ the field that Abraham had bought from the Hittites.* There Abraham was buried and Sarah his wife. ¹¹ And it happened that after the death of Abraham God blessed Isaac his son, and Isaac settled at Beer-Lahai-Roi. ¹² Now these are the generations* of Ishmael, the son of Abraham, that Hagar the Egyptian, the maidservant of Sarah, bore to Abraham. ¹³ And these are the names of the sons of Ishmael, by their names according to their family records. The firstborn of Ishmael was Nebaioth, then Kedar, Adbeel, Mibsam, ¹⁴ Mishma, Dumah, Massa, ¹⁵ Hadad, Tema, Jetur, Naphish, and Kedemah. ¹⁶ These are the sons of Ishmael, and these are their names by their villages and by their encampments—12 leaders according to their tribes. ¹⁷ Now these are the years of the life of Ishmael: 137 years. And he passed away and died, and was gathered to his people. ¹⁸ They settled from Havilah to Shur, which was opposite* Egypt, going toward Asshur, opposite;* he _⌊settled_⌋* opposite* all his brothers. ¹⁹ Now these are the generations* of Isaac, the son of Abraham. Abraham fathered Isaac, ²⁰ And Isaac was _⌊forty years old_⌋* when he took Rebekah, the daughter of Bethuel the Aramean of Paddan-Aram, the sister of Laban the Aramean, as his wife. ²¹ And Isaac prayed to Yahweh on behalf of his wife, for she was barren. And Yahweh responded to his prayer, and Rebekah his wife conceived. ²² And the children in her womb jostled each other, and she said, "_⌊If it is going to be like this, why be pregnant_⌋?"* And she went to inquire of Yahweh. ²³ And Yahweh said to her, "Two nations are in your womb, and two peoples _⌊from birth_⌋* shall be divided. And _⌊one people shall be stronger than the other_⌋.* And the elder shall serve the younger." ²⁴ And when her days to give birth were completed,* then—behold—twins were in her womb. ²⁵ And the first came out red, all _⌊his body_⌋* was like a hairy coat, so they called his name Esau. ²⁶ And afterward his brother came out, and his hand grasped the heel of Esau, so his name was called Jacob. And Isaac _⌊was sixty years old_⌋* at their birth. ²⁷ And the boys grew up. And Esau was a skilled* hunter, a man of the field, but Jacob was a peaceful man, living in tents. ²⁸ And Isaac loved Esau because _⌊he could eat of his game_⌋,* but Rebekah loved Jacob. ²⁹ Once* Jacob cooked a thick stew, and Esau came in from the field, and he was exhausted. ³⁰ And Esau said to Jacob, "Give me _⌊some of that red stuff_⌋* to gulp down, for I am exhausted!" (Therefore his name was called Edom). ³¹ Then Jacob said, "Sell me your birthright _⌊first_⌋."* ³² And Esau said, "Look, I am going to die; now what is this birthright to me?" ³³ Then Jacob said, "Swear to me _⌊first_⌋."* And he swore to him, and sold his birthright to Jacob. ³⁴ Then Jacob gave Esau bread, and thick lentil stew, and he ate and drank. Then he got up and went away. So Esau despised his birthright.

¹ And _⌊Sarah lived_⌋* one hundred and twenty-seven years; these were the years of the life of Sarah. ² And Sarah died in Kiriath Arba; that is Hebron, in the land of Canaan.

¹ Then Isaac called Jacob and blessed him. And he instructed him and said to him, "You must not take a wife from the daughters of Canaan.

³² And the sons of Keturah, Abraham's concubine: she gave birth to Zimran, Jokshan, Medan, Midian, Ishbak, and Shuah. And the sons of Jokshan: Sheba and Dedan. ³³ And the sons of Midian: Ephah, Epher, Enoch, Abida, and Eldaah. All these were the sons of Keturah.

³⁵ And Husham died, and Hadad, son of Bedad, who defeated Midian in the field* of Moab reigned in his place. And the name of his city was Avith.

²⁸ Then Midianite traders passed by. And they* drew Joseph up and brought him up from the pit, and they sold Joseph to the Ishmaelites for twenty pieces of silver. And they brought Joseph to Egypt.

³⁶ And the Midianites sold him in Egypt to Potiphar, a court official of Pharaoh, a commander of the imperial guard.

¹⁵ And Pharaoh heard this matter, and he sought to kill Moses, and Moses fled from Pharaoh, and he lived in the land of Midian, and he lived at _⌊a certain well_⌋.* ¹⁶ Now the priest of Midian had seven daughters, and they came and drew water and filled the troughs to water their father's flock.*

¹ And Jethro, the priest of Midian, the father-in-law of Moses, heard all that God had done for Moses and for Israel, his people, that Yahweh had brought Israel out from Egypt. ² And Jethro, the father-in-law of Moses, took Zipporah the wife of Moses after her sending away, ³ and her two sons—the one whose name was Gershom, for he had said, "I have been an alien in a foreign land," ⁴ and the one whose name was Eliezer, for "the God of my father was my help, and he delivered me from the sword of Pharaoh."

⁴ And Moab said to the elders of Midian, "Now the crowd will lick up all around us, like a bull devours the grass of the field." And Balak son of Zippor was king of Moab at that time.

¹⁷ "Attack the Midianites and strike them ¹⁸ because they were attacking you with their deception, with which they have deceived you on the matter of Peor and on the matter of Cozbi the daughter of the leader of Midian, their sister who was struck on the day of the plague because of the matter of Peor."

² "Seek vengeance for the _⌊Israelites_⌋* on the Midianites; afterward you will be gathered to your people."

⁸ They killed the kings of Midian in addition to the ones they had slain: Evi and Rekem and Zur and Hur and Reba, the five kings of Midian; they also killed Balaam son of Beor by the sword.

¹ The _⌊Israelites_⌋* did evil in the eyes of Yahweh, and Yahweh gave them into the hand of the Midianites* for seven years. ² The hand of the Midianites* prevailed over Israel; because of the presence of the Midianites,* the _⌊Israelites_⌋* made for themselves hiding places that were in the mountains, caves, and strongholds. ³ And whenever Israel sowed seed, the Midianites,* Amalekites,* and the people of the east would come up against them. ⁴ They would camp against them and destroy the produce of the land _⌊as far as_⌋* Gaza; they left no produce in Israel, or sheep, ox, or donkey. ⁵ For they, their livestock, and their tents would come up like a great number of locusts; they and their camels could not be counted; they came into the land and devoured it. ⁶ Israel was very poor because of the presence of the Midianites,* and the _⌊Israelites_⌋* cried out to Yahweh. ⁷ When the _⌊Israelites_⌋* cried out to Yahweh on account of the Midianites,* ⁸ Yahweh sent a prophet to the _⌊Israelites_⌋,* and he said to them, "Thus says Yahweh the God of Israel: 'I brought you up from Egypt; I brought you from the house of slavery.*

¹¹ Thus* Job's three friends heard of this calamity that had come upon him. So* each set out from his own place: Eliphaz the Temanite and Bildad the Shuhite and Zophar the Naamathite. And they met* together to come to console him and to comfort him.

²⁵ and all the kings of Zimri, and all the kings of Elam, and all the kings of Media;

⁹ He made him king over Gilead, over the Ashurites, over Jezreel, over Ephraim, over Benjamin, and over Israel, all of it.

¹ Now the queen of Sheba had heard of the fame of Solomon regarding the name of Yahweh, and she came to test him with hard questions.

¹⁹ The caravans of Tema looked; the traveling merchants of Sheba hope for them.

¹⁰ Let the kings of Tarshish and the islands bring tribute. Let the kings of Sheba and Seba present gifts,

²³ and Dedan, and Tema, and Buz, and all those who are trimmed to the side;

⁸ Flee! Turn back! _⌊Get down low_⌋!* O inhabitants of Dedan. For I will bring upon him the disaster of Esau at the time when I will punish him.

¹³ therefore thus says the Lord Yahweh: "so* I will stretch out my hand against Edom and I will cut off from it both human and animal, and I will make it a ruin from Teman and Dedan; they will fall by the sword.

⁶ They made your oars with oaks from Bashan; your deck they made with inlaid ivory, with cypress trees from the coastlands of Cyprus.*

²⁰ Dedan was trading with you, with garments of woven material for riding.

⁶ A multitude of camels shall cover you, the young male camels of Midian and Ephah. All those from Sheba shall come; they shall bring gold and frankincense, and they shall proclaim the praise of Yahweh.

¹⁰ Then she said to Abraham, "Drive out this slave woman and her son, for the son of this slave woman will not be heir with my son, with Isaac." ¹¹ And the matter _⌊displeased Abraham very much_⌋* on account of his son. ¹² Then God said to Abraham, "_⌊Do not be displeased_⌋* on account of the boy and on account of the slave woman. _⌊Listen to everything that Sarah said to you_⌋,* for through Isaac your offspring will be named.

³⁶ And Sarah, the wife of my master, has borne a son to my master after her old age. And he* has given to him all that he has.

¹⁸ You have ascended on high; you have led away captives. You have received gifts from among humankind, and even from the rebellious, so that Yah* God may dwell there.

²⁷ All things have been handed over to me by my Father, and no one knows the Son except the Father, and no one knows the Father except the Son and _⌊anyone to whom_⌋* the Son wants to reveal him.*

¹⁸ And Jesus approached and* spoke to them, saying, "All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to me.

³⁵ The Father loves the Son and has given all things into his hand.

² just as you have given him authority over all flesh, in order that he would give eternal life to them—everyone whom you have given him.

¹⁷ and if children, also heirs—heirs of God and fellow heirs with Christ, if indeed we suffer together with him so that we may also be glorified together with him.

³² Indeed, he who did not spare his own Son, but gave him up for us all, how will he not also, together with him, freely give us all things?

⁷ nor are they all children because they are descendants of Abraham, but "In Isaac will your descendants be named."* ⁸ That is, it is not the children _⌊by human descent_⌋* who are children of God, but the children of the promise are counted as descendants. ⁹ For the statement of the promise is this: "At this time I will return and _⌊Sarah will have_⌋* a son."*

²¹ So then, let no one boast in people. For all things are yours, ²² whether Paul or Apollos or Cephas or the world or life or death or things present or things to come, all things are yours, ²³ and you are Christ's, and Christ is God's.

²⁹ And if you are Christ's, then you are descendants of Abraham, heirs according to the promise.

²⁸ But you, brothers, are children of the promise, just as Isaac.

¹⁹ because he was well pleased for all the fullness to dwell in him,

² in these last days he has spoken to us by a Son, whom he appointed heir of all things, through whom also he made the world,*

³ Then* Sarai, the wife of Abram, took Hagar, her Egyptian servant, after Abram had lived ten years in the land of Canaan, and gave her to Abram her husband as his wife.

¹⁴ Then Abraham rose up early in the morning and took bread and a skin of water and gave it to Hagar, putting it on her shoulder. And he sent her away with the child, and she went, wandering about in the wilderness, in Beersheba.

¹ Now Abraham again took a wife, and her name was Keturah.

⁴ Then she gave him Bilhah, her female servant, as a wife, and Jacob went in to her

⁹ When Leah saw that she had ceased bearing children, she took Zilpah her female servant and gave her to Jacob as a wife.

²² That night he arose and took his two wives, his two female servants, and his eleven children and crossed the ford of the Jabbok.

²² And while Israel was living in that land Reuben went and had sexual relations with Bilhah, his father's concubine. And Israel heard about it.

³ And whenever Israel sowed seed, the Midianites,* Amalekites,* and the people of the east would come up against them.

¹ In those days there was no king in Israel; there was a man, a Levite, who dwelled as a foreigner* in the remote areas of the hill country of Ephraim. And he took for himself a concubine from Bethlehem in Judah. ² But his concubine felt repugnance toward him,* and she left him and went to her father's house, to Bethlehem in Judah; she was there some four months.

⁴ His father-in-law, the young woman's father, urged him to stay with him three days; and they ate and drank, and they spent the night there.

¹ There was a man in the land of Uz whose* name was Job. That* man was blameless and upright and God-fearing and turning away from evil.

³ Then* his livestock came to be seven thousand sheep and goats and three thousand camels and five hundred pairs* of oxen and five hundred female donkeys, and he had very many slaves, and that man was greater than all the people of the east.

¹⁴ from men by your hand, O Yahweh, from men of this world. Their share is in _⌊this life_⌋,* and you fill their stomach with your treasure. They are satisfied with children. They bequeath their excess to their children. ¹⁵ By contrast, I in righteousness shall see your face. Upon awakening I will be satisfied seeing your form.

⁴⁵ in order that you may be sons of your Father who is in heaven, because he causes his sun to rise on the evil and the good, and he sends rain on the just and the unjust.

¹¹ But what father from among you, if his* son will ask for a fish, instead of a fish will give him a snake? ¹² Or also, if he will ask for an egg, will give him a scorpion? ¹³ Therefore if you, although you* are evil, know how to give good gifts to your children, how much more will the Father from heaven give the Holy Spirit to those who ask him?"

¹⁷ And yet he did not leave himself without witness by* doing good, giving you rain from heaven and fruitful seasons, satisfying you* with food and your hearts with gladness."

⁴ And Abram went out as Yahweh had told him, and Lot went with him. Now Abram _⌊was seventy-five years old_⌋* when he went out from Haran.

¹⁵ And as for you, you shall go to your ancestors* in peace; you shall be buried in a good old age.

⁷ Now these are the days of the years of _⌊the life of Abraham_⌋:* one hundred and seventy-five years.

¹⁷ Now these are the years of the life of Ishmael: 137 years. And he passed away and died, and was gathered to his people.

¹⁸ And it happened that when her life was departing (for she was dying), she called his name Ben-Oni.* But his father called him Benjamin.*

²⁸ Now the days of Isaac were one hundred and eighty years. ²⁹ And Isaac passed away and died, and was gathered to his people, old and full of days. And his sons Esau and Jacob buried him.

⁸ Then Pharaoh said to Jacob, "_⌊How old are you_⌋?"* ⁹ And Jacob said to Pharaoh, "The days of the years of my sojourning are one hundred and thirty years. Few and hard have been the days of the years of my life, and they have not reached the days of the years of the lives of my ancestors* in the days of their sojourning."

²⁹ Then he instructed them and said to them, "I am about to be gathered to my people. Bury me among my ancestors* in the cave that is in the field of Ephron the Hittite,

³³ When Jacob finished instructing his sons he drew his feet up to the bed. Then he took his last breath and was gathered to his people.

²⁴ "Let Aaron be gathered to his people; he will not come into the land that I have given to the _⌊Israelites_⌋* because you rebelled against _⌊my word_⌋* at the waters of Meribah.

¹³ When you see it, you will be gathered to your people, just as Aaron your brother was gathered,

¹⁰ Moreover, that entire generation was gathered to their* ancestors,* and another generation grew up after them who did not know Yahweh or the work he had done for Israel.*

³² And Gideon son of Joash died at a good old age, and he was buried in the tomb of Jehoash his father, in Ophrah of the Abiezrites.*

²⁸ And he died in a good old age, full of days, wealth, and honor. And Solomon his son reigned in his place.

²⁶ You shall come in maturity to the grave, as the raising up of a stack of sheaves in its season.

¹⁷ Then* Job died old and full of days.

²⁹ The glory of young men is their strength,* but the beauty of the aged is gray hair.

¹¹ But I am full with the wrath of Yahweh, I struggle to hold it* in. Pour it out on the children* in the street, and on the assemblies* of young men at the same time. For even husband with wife will get trapped, the old with him who is full of days.

⁵ And when* Ananias heard these words, he fell down and* died. And great fear came on all those who heard about it.*

¹⁰ And immediately she fell down at his feet and died. So when* the young men came in, they found her dead, and carried her* out and* buried her* with her husband.

²³ And immediately an angel of the Lord struck him down _⌊because_⌋* he did not give the glory to God. And he was eaten by worms and* died.

³⁶ For David, after* serving the purpose of God in his own generation, fell asleep and _⌊was buried with_⌋* his fathers, and experienced decay.

⁹ And Sarah saw the son of Hagar the Egyptian, whom she had borne Abraham, mocking. ¹⁰ Then she said to Abraham, "Drive out this slave woman and her son, for the son of this slave woman will not be heir with my son, with Isaac."

⁹ that he may sell* to me the cave of Machpelah which _⌊belongs to him_⌋,* which is at the end of his field. At full value let him sell* it to me in your midst as _⌊a burial site_⌋."* ¹⁰ Now Ephron was sitting among the Hittites.* And Ephron the Hittite answered Abraham in the hearing of the Hittites* with respect to all who were entering the gate of his city, and said, ¹¹ "No, my lord, hear me. I give you the field and the cave which is in it, I also give it to you in the sight of the children of my people I give it to you. Bury your dead." ¹² And Abraham bowed before the people of the land. ¹³ And he spoke to Ephron in the hearing of the people of the land, saying, "_⌊If only you will hear me_⌋*—I give the price of the field. Take it from me that I may bury my dead there." ¹⁴ And Ephron answered Abraham, saying to him, ¹⁵ "My lord, hear me. A piece of land worth four hundred shekels of silver—what is that between me and you? Bury your dead." ¹⁶ Then Abraham listened to Ephron, and Abraham weighed for Ephron the silver that he had named* in the hearing of the Hittites:* four hundred shekels of silver _⌊at the merchants' current rate_⌋.* ¹⁷ So the field of Ephron which was in the Machpelah, which was near Mamre—the field and the cave which was in it, with all the trees that were in the field, which were within all its surrounding boundaries—_⌊passed_⌋* ¹⁸ to Abraham as a property in the presence of the Hittites,* with respect to all who were entering the gate of his city. ¹⁹ And thus afterward Abraham buried Sarah his wife in the cave of the field of Machpelah near Mamre; that is Hebron, in the land of Canaan. ²⁰ And the field and the cave which was in it _⌊passed_⌋* to Abraham as _⌊a burial site_⌋* from the Hittites.*

²⁹ And Isaac passed away and died, and was gathered to his people, old and full of days. And his sons Esau and Jacob buried him.

²⁹ Then he instructed them and said to them, "I am about to be gathered to my people. Bury me among my ancestors* in the cave that is in the field of Ephron the Hittite, ³⁰ in the cave that is in the field of Machpelah that is before* Mamre in the land of Canaan, which Abraham bought with the field from Ephron the Hittite as a burial site.

¹³ And his sons carried him to the land of Canaan and buried him in the cave of the field of Machpelah, which field Abraham had bought as a burial site from Ephron the Hittite before* Mamre.

¹⁶ Then Abraham listened to Ephron, and Abraham weighed for Ephron the silver that he had named* in the hearing of the Hittites:* four hundred shekels of silver _⌊at the merchants' current rate_⌋.*

³¹ There they buried Abraham and Sarah his wife. There they buried Isaac and Rebekah his wife. And there I buried Leah—

² And I will make you a great nation, and I will bless you, and I will make your name great. And you will be a blessing.

¹⁴ Therefore the well was called Beer-Lahai-Roi; behold, it is between Kadesh and Bered.

¹⁹ And God said, "No, but Sarah your wife shall bear a son for you, and you shall call his name Isaac. And I will establish my covenant with him as an everlasting covenant to his offspring after him.

¹⁷ that I will certainly bless you and greatly multiply your offspring as the stars of heaven, and as the sand that is by the shore of the sea. And your offspring will take possession of the gate of his enemies.

⁶² Now Isaac was coming from the direction of Beer-Lahai-Roi. And he was living in the land of the Negev.

²⁴ And Joseph said to his brothers, "I am about to die, but God will certainly visit you and bring you up from this land to the land that he swore to Abraham, to Isaac, and to Jacob."

¹⁰ And the angel of Yahweh said to her, "_⌊I will greatly multiply_⌋* your offspring, so that they cannot be counted for their abundance." ¹¹ And the angel of Yahweh said to her:
"Behold, you are pregnant and shall have a son. And you shall call his name Ishmael, for Yahweh has listened to your suffering. ¹² And he shall be a wild donkey of a man, his hand will be against everyone, and the hand of everyone will be against him, and he will live _⌊in hostility with all his brothers_⌋."* ¹³ So* she called the name of Yahweh who spoke to her, "You are El-Roi,"* for she said, "Here I have seen after he who sees me." ¹⁴ Therefore the well was called Beer-Lahai-Roi; behold, it is between Kadesh and Bered. ¹⁵ And Hagar had a child for Abram, a son. And Abram called the name of his son whom Hagar bore to him, Ishmael.

²⁰ And as for Ishmael, I have heard you. Behold, I will bless him and I will make him fruitful, and I will multiply him _⌊exceedingly_⌋.* He shall father twelve princes, and I will make him a great nation.

¹³ And I will also make the son of the slave woman into a nation, for he is your offspring."

⁶ the tents of Edom and the Ishmaelites, Moab and the Hagrites,

³ and Basemath, the daughter of Ishmael, the sister of Nebaioth.

²⁹ These are their generations: the firstborn of Ishmael, Nebaioth, and Kedar, Abdeel, Mibsam, ³⁰ Mishma, Dumah, Massa, Hadad, Tema, ³¹ Jetur, Naphish, and Kedmah. These are the sons of Ishmael.

⁵ Woe to me, that I sojourn in Meshech, that I dwell among the tents of Kedar.

⁵ I am black but beautiful,* _⌊O maidens of Jerusalem_⌋,* like the tents of Kedar, like the curtains of Solomon.

¹⁶ For the Lord said this to me:
"_⌊In one more year_⌋,* like the years of a hired worker,
all the glory of Kedar will come to an end. ¹⁷ And the remainder of the number of the bows* of the warriors of the sons of Kedar will be few."
For Yahweh, the God of Israel, has spoken.

¹¹ Let the desert and its towns lift up their voice, the villages that Kedar inhabits. Let the inhabitants of Sela sing for joy; let them shout loudly from the _⌊top_⌋* of the mountains.

⁷ All the flocks of Kedar shall be gathered to you; the rams of Nebaioth shall serve you. They shall present a sacrifice for favor on my altar, and I will glorify _⌊my honorable house_⌋.*

¹¹ The oracle of Dumah:
One is calling to me from Seir,
"Watchman, what _⌊of_⌋* the night? Watchman, what _⌊of_⌋* the night?"

¹⁶ For the Lord said this to me:
"_⌊In one more year_⌋,* like the years of a hired worker,
all the glory of Kedar will come to an end.

¹⁹ And they made war against the Hagrites, Jetur, Naphish, and Nodab.

²³ And Abraham took Ishmael his son and all who were born of his house, and all those acquired by his money, every male among the men of Abraham's house, and he circumcised the flesh of their foreskin on the same day that God spoke with him.

⁷ Now these are the days of the years of _⌊the life of Abraham_⌋:* one hundred and seventy-five years. ⁸ And Abraham passed away and died in a good old age, old and full of years. And he was gathered to his people.

¹¹ The name of the first is the Pishon. It went around all the land of Havilah, where there is gold.

⁷ And the sons of Cush: Seba, Havilah, Sabtah, Raamah, and Sabteca. The sons of Raamah: Sheba and Dedan.

²⁹ Ophir, Havilah, and Jobab. All these were the sons of Joktan.

¹⁰ And Lot lifted up his eyes and saw the whole plain of the Jordan, that all of it was well-watered land—this was before Yahweh destroyed Sodom and Gomorrah—like the garden of Yahweh, like the land of Egypt _⌊in the direction of_⌋* Zoar.

¹⁰ Now* the Valley of Siddim _⌊was full of tar pits_⌋.* And the kings of Sodom and Gomorrah fled and _⌊fell into them_⌋,* but the rest fled to the mountains.

¹² And he shall be a wild donkey of a man, his hand will be against everyone, and the hand of everyone will be against him, and he will live _⌊in hostility with all his brothers_⌋."*

¹ And Abraham journeyed from there to the land of the Negev, and he settled between Kadesh and Shur. And he dwelled as an alien in Gerar.

²¹ And he lived in the wilderness of Paran. And his mother took a wife for him from the land of Egypt.

⁷ Then Saul defeated the Amalekites from Havilah as one goes to Shur which is _⌊east of_⌋* Egypt.

²⁹ In his days, Pharaoh Neco, king of Egypt, went up against the king of Assyria at the Euphrates River. King Josiah went to meet him, and he* killed him at Megiddo as soon as he saw him.

⁶⁴ His priests fell by the sword, and his widows did not weep.

²³ On that day, there will be a highway from Egypt to Assyria, and Assyria will come into Egypt, and Egypt into Assyria, and Egypt will worship together with Assyria. ²⁴ On that day, Israel will be the third with Egypt and Assyria, a blessing in the midst of the earth,

³² And the sons of Keturah, Abraham's concubine: she gave birth to Zimran, Jokshan, Medan, Midian, Ishbak, and Shuah. And the sons of Jokshan: Sheba and Dedan.

² Abraham became the father of Isaac, and Isaac became the father of Jacob, and Jacob became the father of Judah and his brothers,

³⁴ the son of Jacob, the son of Isaac, the son of Abraham, the son of Terah, the son of Nahor,

⁸ And he gave him the covenant of circumcision, and so he became the father of Isaac and circumcised him on the eighth day, and Isaac did so with* Jacob, and Jacob did so with* the twelve patriarchs.

²³ (Now, Bethuel fathered Rebekah). These eight Milcah bore to Nahor, the brother of Abraham.

²⁹ Now Rebekah had a brother, and his name was Laban. And Laban ran out to the man toward the spring.

⁶⁷ And Isaac brought her to the tent of Sarah his mother. And he took Rebekah, and she became his wife. And Isaac loved her and was comforted after the death of his mother.

⁵ Then Isaac sent Jacob away, and he went to Paddan-Aram, to Laban the son of Bethuel the Aramean, the brother of Rebekah, the mother of Jacob and Esau. ⁶ Now Esau saw that Isaac had blessed Jacob and sent him away to Paddan-Aram, to take for himself a wife from there, and* he blessed him and instructed him, saying, "You must not take a wife from the daughters of Canaan,"

¹⁸ And he drove all his livestock and his possessions that he had acquired, the livestock of his possession that he had acquired in Paddan-Aram, in order to go to Isaac his father, to the land of Canaan.

²⁰ And Jacob _⌊tricked_⌋* Laban the Aramean by not telling him that he intended to flee.

²⁴ And God came to Laban the Aramean in a dream at night and said to him, "_⌊Take care_⌋* that you not speak with Jacob, whether good or evil."

⁹ And God appeared to Jacob again when he came from Paddan-Aram, and he blessed him.

⁵ And _⌊you shall declare_⌋* and you shall say _⌊before_⌋* your God, 'My ancestor* was a wandering Aramean, and he went down to Egypt, and there he dwelt as an alien _⌊few in number_⌋,* and there he became a great nation, mighty and numerous.

²⁷ And there were many lepers in Israel in the time of the prophet Elisha, and none of them was made clean except Naaman the Syrian."

³⁰ And Sarai was barren; she had no child.

² Then* Abram said, "O Yahweh, my Lord, what will you give me? _⌊I continue to be_⌋* childless, and _⌊my heir_⌋* is Eliezer of Damascus." ³ And Abram said, "Look, you have not given me a descendant, and here, _⌊a member of my household_⌋* is _⌊my heir_⌋."*

² And Sarai said to Abram, "Look, please, Yahweh has prevented me from bearing children. Please go in to my servant; perhaps _⌊I will have children by her_⌋."* And Abram listened to the voice of Sarai.

¹⁶ And I will bless her; moreover, I give to you from her a son. And I will bless her, and _⌊she shall give rise to nations_⌋.* Kings of peoples shall come* from her." ¹⁷ And Abraham fell upon his face and laughed. And he said in his heart, "_⌊Can a child be born to a man a hundred years old_⌋,* or _⌊can Sarah bear a child at ninety_⌋?"* ¹⁸ And Abraham said to God, "Oh that Ishmael might live before you!" ¹⁹ And God said, "No, but Sarah your wife shall bear a son for you, and you shall call his name Isaac. And I will establish my covenant with him as an everlasting covenant to his offspring after him.

² He had two wives; the name of the first was Hannah, and the name of the second was Peninnah. Now Peninnah had children, but Hannah had no children.

¹¹ She _⌊made a vow_⌋* and said: "O Yahweh of hosts, if you will look with compassion on the misery of your female servant, and will remember me, and not forget your female servant, and will give to your female servant _⌊a male child_⌋* then I will give him to Yahweh all the days of his life, and a razor will never pass over his head."*

²⁷ I prayed for this boy, and Yahweh has given me my request that I asked from him.

²⁰ And they were helped against them, and the Hagrites and all who were with them were given into their hand, for they cried out to God in the battle, and he responded to their prayer because they trusted in him.

¹³ and prayed to him. And God responded to him and heard his plea and let him return to Jerusalem to his kingdom. And Manasseh knew that Yahweh was God.

²³ So we fasted and sought our God for this and he responded to our prayer.

¹⁵ And call me in the day of trouble; I will deliver you, and you will glorify me."

² O you who hear prayer, to you all flesh will come.

¹⁵ He will call upon me and I will answer him; I will be with him in trouble; I will rescue and honor him.

³ Look, children* are the heritage* of Yahweh; the fruit of the womb is a reward.

¹⁹ He fulfills the desire of those who fear him; he also hears their cry for help, and saves them.

²⁴ The dread of the wicked will come upon him, but the desire of the righteous will be granted.

¹¹ Thus says Yahweh, the holy one of Israel, and its _⌊maker_⌋:* "Ask me of the things to come _⌊about_⌋* my children, and you command me about the work of my hands.

⁹ Then you shall call, and Yahweh himself will answer. You shall cry for help, and he will say, 'Here I am!' If you remove from among you the yoke, the _⌊finger-pointing_⌋* and _⌊evil speech_⌋,*

²⁴ And this will happen: before they call, I myself will answer; while still they are speaking, I myself will hear.

⁷ And _⌊they did not have_⌋* a child, because Elizabeth was barren. And they were both advanced _⌊in years_⌋.*

¹³ But the angel said to him,
"Do not be afraid, Zechariah, because your prayer has been heard, and your wife Elizabeth will bear you a son, and you will call his name John.

¹⁰ And not only this, but also when* Rebecca conceived children by one man,* Isaac our father— ¹¹ for although they* had not yet been born, or done anything good or evil, in order that the purpose of God according to election might remain, ¹² not by works but by the one who calls—it was said to her, "The older will serve the younger,"*

⁹ (Formerly in Israel, when a man went to inquire of God, he would say: "Come, let us go up to the seer." For the prophet of today was formerly called a seer.)

²² So they inquired again of Yahweh, "_⌊Did the man come here_⌋?" * And Yahweh said, "Look, he is hiding himself among the baggage."

¹⁵ Only today I began to inquire of God for him. Far be it from me that _⌊the king should impute anything against his servant_⌋* or against my father's household, for your servant has not known any of this matter, little or much."

⁶ And Saul inquired of Yahweh, but Yahweh did not answer him, not by dreams or by the Urim* or by the prophets.

⁸ And David inquired of Yahweh, saying, "Should I pursue after this band of raiders? Will I overtake them?" He said to him, "Pursue them, for you will certainly overtake them, and you will certainly rescue them."

³¹ And _⌊when you lift up your gifts, sacrificing your children_⌋* through the fire, you are defiling yourself through all of your idols until _⌊today_⌋,* and will I let myself* be consulted by you, house of Israel?" ' _⌊As I live_⌋,"* _⌊declares_⌋* the Lord Yahweh, "I will not let myself* be consulted by you!

³⁷ "Thus says the Lord Yahweh: 'Again this time I will let _⌊myself be inquired of_⌋* by the house of Israel, to do something for them; I will cause them to increase _⌊their population like a flock_⌋.*

⁴ "As for me, behold, my covenant shall be with you, and you shall be the father of a multitude of nations.

¹⁶ And I will bless her; moreover, I give to you from her a son. And I will bless her, and _⌊she shall give rise to nations_⌋.* Kings of peoples shall come* from her."

⁶⁰ And they blessed Rebekah and said to her, "You are our sister; may you become countless thousands; and may your offspring take possession of the gate of his enemies."

²⁷ And the boys grew up. And Esau was a skilled* hunter, a man of the field, but Jacob was a peaceful man, living in tents.

²⁹ Let peoples serve you, and nations bow down to you; Be lord of your brothers, and may the sons of your mother bow down to you. Cursed be those cursing you, and blessed be those blessing you."

⁴⁰ But by your sword you shall live, and you shall serve your brother. But it shall be that when free yourself you shall tear off his yoke from your neck.

⁶ And the messengers returned to Jacob and said, "We came to your brother, to Esau, and he is coming to meet you, and four hundred men are with him."

³ And he himself passed on before them and bowed down to the ground seven times until he came to his brother.

³¹ Now these are the kings who reigned in the land of Edom before any king ruled over the _⌊Israelites_⌋.*

¹⁴ From Kadesh Moses sent messengers to the king of Edom: "Thus your brother Israel has said, 'You know all the hardship that has found us;

¹⁴ He put garrisons in Edom; all over Edom he put garrisons, and all of Edom became servants of David. Yahweh protected David wherever he went.

⁴⁷ There was not a king in Edom; a governor served as king.

¹³ And he put garrisons in Edom, and all Edom became servants to David. And Yahweh delivered David wherever he went.

¹¹ Then Amaziah strengthened himself, and leading his army, he went to the Valley of Salt. And he struck down ten thousand men* of Seir. ¹² Now the _⌊troops_⌋* captured ten thousand others alive, and they brought them to the top of the rock and threw them from the top of the rock. So all of them were smashed to pieces.

⁸ Moab is my washing pot; over Edom, I will cast my sandal. On account of me, O Philistia, raise a shout." ⁹ Who will bring me to the fortified city? Who will lead me to Edom?

⁵ For they have consulted together _⌊with a unified purpose_⌋.* They have made a covenant against you: ⁶ the tents of Edom and the Ishmaelites, Moab and the Hagrites, ⁷ Gebal and Ammon and Amalek, Philistia, with the inhabitants of Tyre. ⁸ Assyria also has joined with them. They _⌊provide help_⌋* to the children of Lot. Selah ⁹ Do to them as you did with Midian, as with Sisera, as with Jabin at the wadi of Kishon. ¹⁰ They were destroyed at En-dor; they became dung for the ground. ¹¹ Make their leaders like Oreb and Zeeb, and all their chiefs like Zebah and Zalmunna, ¹² who said, "Let us take as our possession the pastures of God." ¹³ O my God, make them like the tumbleweed, like the chaff before wind. ¹⁴ As fire burns a forest, and as a flame sets afire mountains, ¹⁵ so pursue them with your tempest and terrify them with your storm.

¹ Come near, nations, to hear; and peoples, listen attentively! Let the earth hear, and that which fills it; the world and all its offspring. ² For the anger of Yahweh is against all the nations, and his wrath is against all their armies; he has put them under a ban, he has given them up for slaughter. ³ And their slain shall be cast out; as for* their corpses, their stench shall go up. And the mountains shall melt with* their blood, ⁴ and all the host of heaven shall rot. And the skies shall roll up like a scroll, and all their host shall wither like the withering of a leaf from a vine, or* like the withering from a fig tree. ⁵ When my sword is drenched in the heavens,
look! It will descend upon Edom, and upon the people of my ban, for judgment. ⁶ _⌊Yahweh has a sword_⌋;*
it is full of blood. It is covered with* fat, with* the blood of lambs and goats, with* the fat of the kidneys of rams, for _⌊Yahweh has a sacrifice_⌋* in Bozrah and a great slaughter in the land of Edom. ⁷ And wild oxen shall go down with them, and steers with strong bulls. And their land shall be drenched with* blood, and their soil shall be fattened with* fat. ⁸ For _⌊Yahweh has a day of vengeance_⌋,* a year of retribution for the strife of Zion. ⁹ And its streams shall be changed to pitch and its soil to sulfur, and its land shall become like burning pitch. ¹⁰ Night and day it shall not be quenched; its smoke shall go up forever. From generation to generation it shall be in ruins; forever and ever there will be no one who passes through her. ¹¹ But* the large bird and the hedgehog shall take possession of it, and the owl and the raven shall live in it. And he shall stretch the measuring line of confusion out over it, and the plumb line of emptiness. ¹² Its nobles—but no kingdom is there—shall call, and all its princes shall be nothing. ¹³ And thorns shall go up her citadel fortress, weeds* and thistle plants* in her fortresses; and it shall be the settlement of jackals, green grass for the daughters of an ostrich. ¹⁴ And desert creatures shall meet with hyenas, and a goat-demon shall call to his neighbor; surely there Lilith* shall repose, and she shall find a resting place for herself. ¹⁵ There the owl shall nest and lay and hatch and care for her chicks in her shadow; surely there the birds of prey shall be gathered, each one with her mate. ¹⁶ Seek from the book of Yahweh and _⌊read_⌋;*
none of these shall be missing; none shall miss her mate. For my* mouth _⌊is the one that_⌋* has commanded, and his spirit _⌊is the one that_⌋* has gathered them. ¹⁷ And he _⌊is the one that_⌋* has cast the lot for them, and his hand has apportioned it to them with the measuring line; they shall take possession of it forever, they shall live in it _⌊from generation to generation_⌋.*

¹ Who is this, coming from Edom, from Bozrah in bright red garments? Who is this honored in his garment, lying down in his great strength? "It is I, speaking in justice, _⌊mighty_⌋* to save!" ² Why are your garments* red, and your garments like he who treads in the winepress? ³ "I have trodden the winepress alone, and there was no man from the peoples with me. And I trod them in my anger, and I trampled them in my wrath, and spattered their juice on my garments, and stained all my clothing, ⁴ for the day of vengeance was in my heart, and the year of my blood-vengeance has come! ⁵ And I looked, but* there was no helper, and I was appalled, but* there was no one who sustains, so* my arm came to assist me, and my wrath _⌊was what_⌋* sustained me. ⁶ And I trampled peoples in my anger, and I made them drunk in my wrath, and I brought their juice down to the earth."

⁷ Concerning Edom, thus says Yahweh of hosts:
"Is there no longer wisdom in Teman? Has counsel become lost from those who understand? Is their wisdom rotting? ⁸ Flee! Turn back! _⌊Get down low_⌋!* O inhabitants of Dedan. For I will bring upon him the disaster of Esau at the time when I will punish him. ⁹ If grape-gatherers come to you, would they not leave gleanings? If thieves in the night, they destroy only _⌊enough for them_⌋.* ¹⁰ But I have stripped Esau bare. I have uncovered his hiding places, and he is not able to hide himself. His offspring are devastated, _⌊along with_⌋* his brothers, and his neighbors, and _⌊he is no more_⌋.* ¹¹ Leave your orphans. I will let them* live. And your widows, let them trust in me." ¹² For thus says Yahweh, "Look, those _⌊who are not condemned_⌋* to drink the cup must certainly drink it.* And are you the one who will go entirely unpunished? You will not go unpunished, for you must certainly drink it.* ¹³ For I have sworn by myself," _⌊declares_⌋* Yahweh, "that Bozrah will become as a horror, as a disgrace, as a waste, and as a curse. And all her towns will be _⌊everlasting sites of ruins_⌋."* ¹⁴ I have heard a message from Yahweh, and a messenger has been sent among the nations. "Gather and come against her, and rise for the battle." ¹⁵ "For look, I will make you small among the nations, despised by the humankind. ¹⁶ Your terror has deceived you, the pride of your heart, O you who dwell in the clefts of the rock, you who seize the height of the hill. Though you make your nest high like the eagle, from there I will bring you down," _⌊declares_⌋* Yahweh. ¹⁷ "And Edom will become as a horror, _⌊everyone who passes by it_⌋* will be appalled, and will hiss because of all its blows. ¹⁸ As the overthrow of Sodom and Gomorrah and their neighbors," says Yahweh, "_⌊no one_⌋* will live there, and the son of humankind will not dwell as an alien in it. ¹⁹ Look, like a lion he comes up from the thickets of the Jordan to _⌊a pastureland by a constantly flowing stream_⌋.* So _⌊I will chase him away hurriedly_⌋* from it. And whoever is chosen I will appoint over it. For who is like me, and who can summon me? And who is this, the shepherd who can stand _⌊before me_⌋?"* ²⁰ _⌊Therefore_⌋* hear the plan of Yahweh that he has planned against Edom, and his plans that he has planned against the inhabitants of Teman. _⌊Surely_⌋* they will drag them away, the little ones of the flock. _⌊Surely_⌋* he will cause to be desolated over them their grazing place. ²¹ The earth will quake from the sound of their falling. A cry of distress! Their voice will be heard at _⌊the Red Sea_⌋.* ²² Look, like an eagle he will go up and he will swoop down, and he will spread out his wings against Bozrah. And the heart of the warriors of Edom will be in that day like the heart of a woman who is in labor.

¹² Thus says the Lord Yahweh: "Because of the doings of Edom in avenging himself with vengeance for* the house of Judah, and so they became very guilty and* they avenged themselves on them," ¹³ therefore thus says the Lord Yahweh: "so* I will stretch out my hand against Edom and I will cut off from it both human and animal, and I will make it a ruin from Teman and Dedan; they will fall by the sword. ¹⁴ And I will exact my vengeance on Edom by the hand of my people Israel, and they will do in Edom according to my anger and according to my rage, and they will know my vengeance," _⌊declares_⌋* the Lord Yahweh.

¹ And the word of Yahweh _⌊came_⌋* to me, _⌊saying_⌋,* ² "Son of man,* set your face against the mountain of Seir and prophesy against it, ³ and you must say to it, 'Thus says the Lord Yahweh: "Look! I am against you, mountain of Seir, and I will stretch out my hand against you, and I will make you a desolation and a wasteland. ⁴ Your cities I will make ruins, and you will be a desolation, and then you will know that I am Yahweh, ⁵ because there has been to you _⌊an ancient hostility_⌋,* and you handed over the _⌊Israelites_⌋* to the power of the sword at the time of their disaster, at the time of _⌊their final punishment_⌋.* ⁶ Therefore _⌊as I live_⌋,"* _⌊declares_⌋* the Lord Yahweh, "Certainly to blood guilt I will prepare you and blood* will pursue; _⌊since_⌋* _⌊you did not hate blood_⌋,* it will pursue you. ⁷ And I will make the mountain of Seir into a desolation and ruin, and I will cut off from it both he who is crossing over and he who is returning. ⁸ And I will fill its mountains with its slain; your hills and your valleys and all of your watercourses, the slain by the sword will fall in them. ⁹ _⌊An everlasting desolation_⌋* I will make you, and your cities will not return, and you will know that I am Yahweh. ¹⁰ I do this because of your saying,* 'The two nations and the two lands, they will be _⌊mine_⌋,* and we will take possession of it,' and yet Yahweh was there. ¹¹ Therefore, _⌊as I live_⌋,"* _⌊declares_⌋* the Lord Yahweh, "so I will deal with you according to your anger and according to your jealousy that you did,* because of your hatred against them, and I will make myself known among them when I judge you. ¹² And you will know that I, Yahweh, I have heard all of your contemptible words that you said* against the mountains of Israel, _⌊saying_⌋,* 'They will be desolate; they are given to us as food.' ¹³ And you magnified yourself against me with your _⌊insolent speech_⌋,* and you spoke voluminously against me with your words—I heard! ¹⁴ Thus the Lord Yahweh says, '_⌊As the whole world rejoices_⌋,* I will make you a desolation. ¹⁵ _⌊Like your rejoicing over the inheritance of the house of Israel_⌋* _⌊because_⌋* it was desolate, I will do to you; you will be a desolation, mountain of Seir and all of Edom, indeed all of it; and they will know that I am Yahweh.'" '

¹¹ Thus says Yahweh: "For three transgressions of Edom and for four I will not revoke the punishment,* because he pursued his brother with the sword! He stifled his compassion and his anger tore them apart _⌊continually_⌋,* and he kept his rage forever. ¹² So I will send a fire against Teman and it will devour the citadel fortresses of Bozrah."

¹ The vision of Obadiah. Thus says my Lord Yahweh concerning Edom: ² "Look, I will* make you insignificant among the nations. You will be utterly despised! ³ The pride of your heart has deceived you, you who live in the clefts of a rock, the heights of its dwelling, you who say in your heart: 'Who can bring me down to the ground?' ⁴ Even if you soar like the eagle, even if your nest is set among the stars, from there I will bring you down!" _⌊declares_⌋* Yahweh: ⁵ "If thieves came to you, if plunderers of the night—How you have been destroyed!—would they not steal _⌊what they wanted_⌋?* If grape gatherers came, would they not leave gleanings? ⁶ How Esau has been pillaged; his treasures have been ransacked! ⁷ All of your _⌊allies_⌋* have driven you up to the boundary; your _⌊confederates_⌋* have deceived you and have prevailed against you. Those who eat your bread have set an ambush for you, there is no* understanding of it.* ⁸ On that day," _⌊declares_⌋* Yahweh, "will I not destroy the wise men from Edom, and understanding from the mountain of Esau? ⁹ And your warriors will be shattered, O Teman, so that _⌊everyone_⌋* from the mountain of Esau will be cut off because of the slaughter! ¹⁰ "Because of the violence done to your brother Jacob, shame will cover you and you will be cut off forever. ¹¹ On _⌊the day you stood nearby_⌋,* _⌊on the day strangers took_⌋* his wealth, and foreigners entered his gates and cast lots over Jerusalem, you were also like one of them. ¹² But you should not have gloated* over your brother's day, on the day of his misfortune, and you should not have rejoiced over the _⌊people_⌋* of Judah on the day of their perishing, and you should not have opened your mouth wide on the day of distress. ¹³ You should not have entered the gate of my people on the day of their disaster. You also should not have gloated over his misery on the day of his disaster, and you should not have stretched out your hands on the day of his disaster. ¹⁴ And you should not have stood at the crossroads to cut off his fugitives and you should not have handed over his survivors on the day of distress. ¹⁵ "For the day of Yahweh is near against all the nations! Just as you have done, it will be done to you. Your deeds will return on your own head. ¹⁶ For just as you have drunk on _⌊my holy mountain_⌋,* all the nations will drink continually. They will drink and they will slurp, and they will be as if they had never been.

² "I have loved you," says Yahweh, but you say, "How have you loved us?" "Is Esau not Jacob's brother?" _⌊declares_⌋* Yahweh. "I have loved Jacob, ³ but Esau I have hated. I have made his* mountain ranges a desolation, and given his inheritance to the jackals of the desert." ⁴ If Edom says, "We are shattered, but we will return and rebuild the ruins," Yahweh of hosts says this: "They may build, but I will tear down; and they will be called a territory of wickedness, and the people with whom Yahweh is angry forever." ⁵ Your eyes will see this, and you will say, "Yahweh is great beyond the borders* of Israel."

¹⁰ And not only this, but also when* Rebecca conceived children by one man,* Isaac our father— ¹¹ for although they* had not yet been born, or done anything good or evil, in order that the purpose of God according to election might remain, ¹² not by works but by the one who calls—it was said to her, "The older will serve the younger,"* ¹³ just as it is written, "Jacob I loved, but Esau I hated."*

¹¹ Then Jacob said to his mother, "Behold, Esau my brother is a hairy man, but I am a smooth man.

¹⁶ And she put the skins of the young goats over his hands and over the smooth part of his neck.

²³ And he did not recognize him because his hands were hairy like the hands of Esau his brother. And he blessed him.

³⁶ Then he said, "_⌊Isn't that why he is named Jacob_⌋?* He has deceived me these two times. He took my birthright and, look, now he has taken my blessing!" Then he said, "Have you not reserved a blessing for me?"

²⁸ And it happened that at her labor one child put out a hand. And the midwife took it and tied a crimson thread on his hand saying, "This one came out first." ²⁹ Then his hand drew back and, behold, his brother came out, and she said, "What a breach you have made for yourself!" And she called his name Perez. ³⁰ And afterward his brother who had the crimson thread on his hand came out. And his name was called Zerah.

³ In the womb he deceived his brother, and in his manhood he struggled with God.

⁹ These are the generations* of Noah. Noah was a righteous man, without defect in his generations. Noah walked with God.

⁹ He was a mighty hunter before Yahweh. Therefore it was said, "Like Nimrod a mighty hunter before Yahweh."

²⁰ And God was with the boy, and he grew and lived in the wilderness. And he became _⌊an expert with a bow_⌋.*

³ So now, take your weapons, your quiver and your bow, and go out to the field and hunt food for me. ⁴ Then make for me tasty food like I love, and bring it to me. And I will eat it so that I* can bless you before I die. ⁵ Now Rebekah was listening as Isaac spoke to Esau his son, and when Esau went to the field to hunt wild game to bring back,

¹⁰ Then Jacob went out from Beersheba and went to Haran. ¹¹ And he arrived at a certain place and spent the night there, because the sun had set. And he took one of the stones of the place and put it under his head and slept at that place.

³⁹ I brought no mangled carcass to you—I bore its loss. From my hand you sought it, whether stolen by day or stolen by night. ⁴⁰ There I was, during the day the heat consumed me, and the cold by night, and my sleep fled from my eyes. ⁴¹ These twenty years I have been in your house. I served you fourteen years for your two daughters and six years for your flock, and you have changed my wages ten times.

³⁴ Then you must say, 'You servants are men of livestock from our childhood until now, both we and also our ancestors,'* so that you may dwell in the land of Goshen, for every shepherd is a detestable thing to Egyptians."

⁸ So* Yahweh said to Satan,* "Have you _⌊considered_⌋* my servant Job? Indeed,* there is no one like him on the earth—a blameless man and upright and God-fearing and turning away from evil."

³ So* Yahweh _⌊asked_⌋* Satan,* "Have you _⌊considered_⌋* my servant Job? Indeed,* there is no one like him on the earth—a blameless man and upright and God-fearing and turning away from evil. And still he persists in his blamelessness _⌊even though_⌋* you incited me against him to destroy him for nothing."

³⁷ Observe the blameless and look at the upright, for there is a future for a man of peace.

⁹ By faith he lived in the land of promise as a stranger, living in tents with Isaac and Jacob, the fellow heirs of the same promise.

⁴ Then make for me tasty food like I love, and bring it to me. And I will eat it so that I* can bless you before I die.

⁹ Go to the flock and take two good young goats from it for me, and I will prepare them as tasty food for your father, just as he likes.

²⁵ Then he said, "Bring it near to me that I may eat from the game of my son, so that I* may bless you." And he brought it to him, and he ate. And he brought wine to him, and he drank.

³¹ He too prepared tasty food and brought it to his father. And he said to his father, "Let my father arise and eat from the wild game of his son, that you* may bless me."

⁴ Then Gideon came to the Jordan, crossing it with the three hundred men who were with him, weary and pursuing. ⁵ He said to the men of Succoth, "Please give loaves of bread to the people who are _⌊following me_⌋,* for they are weary, and I am pursuing Zebah and Zalmunna, the kings of Midian."

²⁸ Then a man from the army informed him and said, "Your father made the army swear a solemn oath, saying, 'Cursed be the man who eats food today,'" so the army is exhausted.

³¹ They defeated the Philistines that day from Micmash to Aijalon, and the troops were very weary.

²⁵ The righteous eats to satisfy his life,* but the belly of the wicked will lack.

³⁰ Even* young people will be faint and grow weary, and the young will stumble, exhausted. ³¹ But* those who wait for Yahweh shall renew their strength. They shall go up with wings* like eagles; they shall run and not grow weary; they shall walk and not be faint.

⁴³ Magdiel, and Iram. These are the chiefs of Edom (that is, Esau, the father of Edom) according to their settlements in the land of their possession.

¹⁵ Then the chiefs of Edom were horrified; great distress seized the leaders of Moab; all of the inhabitants of Canaan melted away.

¹⁴ From Kadesh Moses sent messengers to the king of Edom: "Thus your brother Israel has said, 'You know all the hardship that has found us; ¹⁵ our ancestors* went down to Egypt, and we lived in Egypt _⌊a long time_⌋,* and the Egyptians mistreated us and our ancestors.* ¹⁶ Then we cried to Yahweh, and he heard our voice; he sent an angel and brought us out from Egypt. And Edom went out to meet _⌊them_⌋* with a large army and a strong hand. ²¹ So Edom refused to give Israel passage through his territory, and Israel turned aside from him.

⁷ "You shall not abhor an Edomite, because he is your brother; you shall not abhor an Egyptian because you were an alien in his land.

⁹ Concerning every account of transgression—concerning an ox, concerning a donkey, concerning small livestock, concerning clothing, concerning all lost property—where someone says, "This belongs to me," the matter of the two of them will come to God;* whomever God declares guilty will make double restitution to his neighbor.

¹⁵ Who is Shaddai that we should serve him, or* what would we benefit when we plead with him?'

¹⁷ Those who said to God, 'Turn away from us,' and 'What can Shaddai do to us?'

⁹ Indeed, he says, 'A man does not profit when he takes delight in God.'

¹⁴ You have said, 'It is useless* to serve God! What is the gain if we keep* his requirements, and if we walk as mourners _⌊before_⌋* Yahweh of hosts?

²² And Abram said to the king of Sodom, "I have raised my hand to Yahweh, God Most High, Maker of heaven and earth,

³ that I may make you swear by Yahweh, the God of heaven and the God of earth, that you will not take a wife for my son from the daughters of the Canaanites in whose midst I am dwelling,

⁶ And Esau took his wives and his sons and his daughters, and all the persons of his household, and his sheep and goats, and all his cattle, and all the goods that he had acquired in the land of Canaan, and went to a land away from his brother Jacob. ⁷ For their possessions were _⌊too many to live together_⌋,* so that the land of their sojourning was not able to support them on account of their livestock.

²³ And he swore to her,* "Anything whatever you ask me for I will give you, up to half my kingdom!"

¹⁶ For people swear by what is greater than themselves, and the oath for confirmation is the end of all dispute for them.

²⁴ Then they refused the desirable land; they did not believe his word,

¹⁵ So I recommend enjoyment. For there is nothing better for man under the sun than to eat and to drink and to rejoice. This will accompany him in his toil the days of his life that God gives to him under the sun.

¹³ But look! Joy and gladness, the killing of oxen* and the slaughtering of sheep, the eating of meat and the drinking of wine! "Let us eat and drink, for tomorrow we die!"

¹³ And Yahweh said to me, "Throw it to the potter,"* _⌊this noble price_⌋* at which I was valued by them!" So I took the thirty silver shekels and I threw them to the potter* in the house of Yahweh.

⁵ But they paid no attention and* went away—this one to his own field, that one to his business.

¹⁵ and* said, "What are you willing to give me if I in turn deliver him to you?" So they set out for him thirty silver coins.

¹⁸ And they all _⌊alike_⌋* began to excuse themselves. The first said to him, 'I have purchased a field, and _⌊I must_⌋* go out to look at it. I ask you, consider me excused.' ¹⁹ And another said, 'I have purchased five yoke of oxen, and I am going to examine them. I ask you, consider me excused.' ²⁰ And another said, 'I have married a wife, and for this reason I am not able to come.'

⁴¹ 'Look, you scoffers, and be astonished and perish! For I am doing a work in your days, a work that you would never believe even if someone were to tell it* to you.'"*

³² If according to a human perspective I fought wild beasts at Ephesus, what benefit is it to me? If the dead are not raised, let us eat and drink, for tomorrow we die.*

¹⁸ For many live, of whom I spoke about to you many times, but now speak about even weeping, as the enemies of the cross of Christ, ¹⁹ whose end is destruction, whose God is the stomach, and whose glory is in their shame, the ones who think on earthly things.

¹⁶ that no one be a sexually immoral or totally worldly person like Esau, who for one meal traded his own birthright. ¹⁷ For you know that also afterwards, when he* wanted to inherit the blessing, he was rejected, because he did not find an occasion for repentance, although he sought it with tears.
