¹ The allotment for the tribe of the descendants* of Judah according to their families reached to the border of Edom, to the wilderness of Zin, _⌊to the far south_⌋.* ² Their southern border was from the end of the Salt Sea,* from the bay facing southward; ³ it continues* to the south to the ascent of Akrabbim, passes along to Zin, it goes up south of Kadesh Barnea, passes along Hezron, goes up to Addar, and makes a turn to Karka; ⁴ _⌊it passes on_⌋* to Azmon, continues* by the wadi of Egypt, and _⌊it ends_⌋* at the sea. This will be your southern border. ⁵ The eastern border is the Salt Sea* up to the mouth* of the Jordan. The border on the northern side runs from the bay of the sea at the mouth* of the Jordan; ⁶ the border goes up to Beth-hoglah and passes along north of Beth Arabah; and the border goes up the stone of Bohan son of Reuben; ⁷ and the border goes up to Debir from the valley of Achor, and to the north, turning to Gilgal, which is opposite the ascent of Adummim, which is south of the wadi;* and the border passes on to the waters of En Shemesh, and it ends at En Rogel. ⁸ Then the border goes up by the Valley of Ben Hinnom* to the slope of the Jebusites* from the south (that is, Jerusalem); and the border goes up to the top of the mountain that lies opposite the valley of Hinnom to the west, which is at the end of the valley of Rephaim to the north; ⁹ then the border turns from the top of the mountain to the spring of the waters of Nephtoah, and continues* from there to the cities of Mount Ephron; the border then turns to Baalah (that is, Kiriath Jearim); ¹⁰ and the border goes around from Baalah to the west, to Mount Seir, and passes on to the slope of Mount Jearim from the north (that is, Kesalon), and goes down to Beth Shemesh, and passes along by Timnah. ¹¹ The border continues* to the slope of Ekron to the north, then bends around to Shikkeron, it passes on to Mount Baalah and continues to Jabneel; and _⌊the border ends_⌋* at the sea. ¹² And the western border is to the Great Sea* and its coast. This is the border surrounding the descendants* of Judah according to their families. ¹³ _⌊According to the commandment of Yahweh to Joshua_⌋,* he gave to Caleb son of Jephunneh a plot of ground among the descendants* of Judah, Kiriath Arba,* which is Hebron (Arba was Anak's father). ¹⁴ Caleb drove out from there three of Anak's sons, Sheshai, Ahiman, and Talmai, the descendants* of Anak. ¹⁵ And from there he went up against the inhabitants of Debir (the former name of Debir was Kiriath Sepher). ¹⁶ And Caleb said, "Whoever attacks Kiriath Sepher and captures it, I will give to him my daughter Acsah as a wife." ¹⁷ Othniel son of Kenaz, the brother of Caleb, captured it, and he gave to him Acsah his daughter as a wife. ¹⁸ When she came to him she urged him to ask her father for a field. So she dismounted from the donkey, and Caleb said to her, "_⌊What do you want_⌋?"* ¹⁹ And she said to him, "Give to me a gift;* you have given me the land of the Negev,* and you must give to me a spring of water." And he gave to her the upper and lower spring.* ²⁰ This is the inheritance of the tribe of the descendants* of Judah according to their families: ²¹ the cities belonging to the tribe of the descendants* of Judah to the far south, to the border of Edom to the south, were Kabzeel, Eder, Jagur, ²² Kinah, Dimonah, Adadah, ²³ Kedesh, Hazor, Ithnan, ²⁴ Ziph, Telem, Bealoth, ²⁵ Hazor Hadattah, Kerioth Hezron (that is, Hazor), ²⁶ Amam, Shema, Moladah, ²⁷ Hazar Gaddah, Heshmon, Beth Pelet, ²⁸ Hazar Shual, Beersheba, Biziothiah, ²⁹ Baalah, Iim, Ezem, ³⁰ Eltolad, Kesil, Hormah, ³¹ Ziklag, Madmannah, Sansannah, ³² Lebaoth, Shilhim, Ain, and Rimmon; in all, twenty-nine cities and their villages. ³³ In the Shephelah:* Eshtaol, Zorah, Ashnah, ³⁴ Zanoah, En Gannim, Tappuah, Enam, ³⁵ Jarmuth, Adullam, Socoh, Azekah, ³⁶ Shaaraim, Adithaim, Gederah, and Gederothaim; fourteen cities and their villages. ³⁷ Zenan, Hadashah, Migdal Gad, ³⁸ Dilean, Mizpah, Joktheel, ³⁹ Lachish, Bozkath, Eglon, ⁴⁰ Cabbon, Lahma, Kitlish, ⁴¹ Gederoth, Beth Dagon, Naamah, and Makkedah; sixteen cities and their villages. ⁴² Libnah, Ether, Ashan, ⁴³ Jephthah, Ashnah, Nezib, ⁴⁴ Keilah, Aczib, and Mareshah; nine cities and their villages. ⁴⁵ Ekron, its towns and villages; ⁴⁶ from Ekron to the sea, and all that _⌊were near_⌋* Ashdod and their villages. ⁴⁷ Ashdod, its towns and villages; Gaza, its towns and villages, up to the wadi* of Egypt and the Great Sea* and its coast.* ⁴⁸ And in the hill country: Shamir, Jattir, Socoh, ⁴⁹ Dannah, Kiriath Sanna (that is, Debir), ⁵⁰ Anab, Eshtemoh, Anim, ⁵¹ Goshen, Holon, and Giloh; eleven cities and their villages. ⁵² Arab, Dumah, Eshan, ⁵³ Janim, Beth-tappuah, Aphekah, ⁵⁴ Humtah, Kiriath Arba* (that is, Hebron), and Zior; nine cities and their villages. ⁵⁵ Moan, Carmel, Ziph, Juttah, ⁵⁶ Jezreel, Jokdeam, Zanoah, ⁵⁷ Kain, Gibeah, and Timnah; ten cities and their villages. ⁵⁸ Halhul, Beth Zur, Gedor, ⁵⁹ Maarath, Beth Anoth, and Eltekon; six cities and their villages. ⁶⁰ Kiriath Baal (that is, Kiriath Jearim) and Rabbah; two cities and their villages. ⁶¹ In the wilderness: Beth Arabah, Middin, Secacah, ⁶² Nibshan, the city of Salt, and En Gedi; six cities and their villages. ⁶³ But the descendants* of Judah were unable to drive out the Jebusites, the inhabitants of Jerusalem, so the Jebusites live with the descendants* of Judah in Jerusalem to this day.

⁵⁵ Surely the land will be divided by lot. They will inherit according to the names of the tribes of their ancestors.* ⁵⁶ _⌊Their_⌋* inheritance must be divided according to the lot between the larger and smaller groups."

³⁶ They set out from Ezion Geber and camped in the desert of Zin, that is, Kadesh. ³⁷ They set out from Kadesh and camped at Mount Hor, at the edge of the land of Edom.

³ Your southern edge will be from the desert of Zin toward the side of Edom, and your southern border will be from the end of the Salt Sea* to the east; ⁴ your boundary will turn from the south to the ascent of Akrabbim* and will pass over to Zin, and its limits will be from the south of Kadesh Barnea; it will continue to Hazar Addar and pass over to Azmon. ⁵ The boundary will turn from Azmon to the valley of Egypt, and its limits will be to the sea.

² Their inheritance was by lot, just as Yahweh commanded through the hand of Moses, for the nine tribes and the half-tribe.

¹⁹ _⌊And on the south side the border_⌋* will run from Tamar up to the waters of Meribot Kadesh and along the wadi* to the Great Sea.* And this is _⌊the boundary to the south_⌋.*

³ All these joined forces at the valley of Siddim (that is, the sea of the salt).

³ Your southern edge will be from the desert of Zin toward the side of Edom, and your southern border will be from the end of the Salt Sea* to the east;

¹⁶ the waters flowing down from above stood still; they stood up in one heap very far from Adam, the city that is beside Zarethan, while the waters flowing down to the sea of the Arabah, the Salt Sea,* _⌊were completely cut off_⌋;* and the people crossed over opposite Jericho.

¹⁵ And Yahweh will divide* the tongue* of the sea of Egypt,* and he will wave his hand over the river* with his scorching wind; and he will strike it into seven streams, and he will _⌊make it passable by foot_⌋.*

⁸ And he said to me, "These waters are going out to the eastern region, and they go down to the _⌊Jordan Valley_⌋,* and they come to the sea* and flow into the sea where _⌊they issue out_⌋,* and the waters in the sea will be healed.*

¹⁸ _⌊And the eastern boundary_⌋* will be between Hauran and Damascus, and from between Gilead and the land of Israel along the Jordan River from* the boundary on the eastern sea to Tamar. And* _⌊this is the border on the east_⌋.*

⁷ Then* they turned back and came to En-Mishpat (that is, Kadesh). And they defeated the whole territory of the Amalekites, and also the Amorites who were living in Hazazon-Tamar.

¹ Then the entire community of the _⌊Israelites_⌋* came to the desert of Zin on the first month, and the people stayed in Kadesh; Miriam died and was buried there.

⁸ This is what your fathers did when I sent them from Kadesh Barnea to see the land.

⁴ your boundary will turn from the south to the ascent of Akrabbim* and will pass over to Zin, and its limits will be from the south of Kadesh Barnea; it will continue to Hazar Addar and pass over to Azmon.

³⁶ The border of the Amorites* ran from the ascent of Akrabbim from Sela and upward.

¹⁸ On that day Yahweh _⌊made_⌋* a covenant with Abram saying, "To your offspring I will give this land, from the river of Egypt to the great river, the Euphrates river,

³¹ " 'And I will set your boundary from the _⌊Red Sea_⌋* and up to the sea of the Philistines and from the desert up to the river,* because I will give the inhabitants of the land into your hand, and you will drive them out from before you.

⁵ The boundary will turn from Azmon to the valley of Egypt, and its limits will be to the sea.

³ from the Shihor, which is _⌊east of Egypt_⌋,* up to the border of Ekron to the north, which is reckoned as Canaanite; there are five Philistine rulers: the Gazites,* Ashdodites,* Ashkelonites,* Gittites,* Ekronites,* and the Avvim.

¹⁰ " 'You will mark out your eastern boundary from Hazar Enan to Shepham;

¹² The boundary will go down to the Jordan, and its limits will be at the Salt Sea.* This will be your land according to its boundaries all around.'"

¹⁵ The southern side begins on the outskirts of Kiriath Jearim, and the border continues to the west to the spring of the waters of Nephtoah; ¹⁶ the border goes down to the foot* of the mountain, which is opposite the Valley of Ben Hinnom,* which is in the valley of Rephaim to the north; then it does down the valley of Hinnom to the slope of the Jebusites* to the south, and then it goes down to En Rogel. ¹⁷ It changes direction from the north, and it continues to En Shemesh; it goes out to Geliloth, which is opposite the ascent of Adummim, and it goes down to the stone of Bohan, son of Reuben. ¹⁸ It passes on to the slope opposite the Arabah* to the north, and it goes down to the Arabah.* ¹⁹ The border passes on to the slope of Beth-hoglah to the north and _⌊ends_⌋* at the north bay of the Salt Sea* at the south end of the Jordan. This is the southern border.

¹⁷ It changes direction from the north, and it continues to En Shemesh; it goes out to Geliloth, which is opposite the ascent of Adummim, and it goes down to the stone of Bohan, son of Reuben.

¹⁹ The border passes on to the slope of Beth-hoglah to the north and _⌊ends_⌋* at the north bay of the Salt Sea* at the south end of the Jordan. This is the southern border. ²⁰ The Jordan forms its border on the eastern side. This is the inheritance of the tribe of Benjamin, its borders that surrounds them, according to their families. ²¹ Now the towns of the tribes of the descendants* of Benjamin, according to their families, were Jericho, Beth-hoglah, Emek Keziz,

¹⁹ And the people came up from the Jordan on the tenth day of the first month, and they camped in Gilgal on the eastern edge* of Jericho.

⁹ And Yahweh said to Joshua, "Today I have rolled away the disgrace of Egypt from you." Therefore, the name of that place is called Gilgal* to this day. ¹⁰ And the _⌊Israelites_⌋* camped at Gilgal, and they kept the Passover on the fourteenth day of the month, in the evening, on the plains of Jericho.

²⁴ Then Joshua, and all Israel with him, took Achan son of Zerah, the silver, the robe, the bar of gold, his sons and daughters, his cattle and donkeys, his sheep, his tent, and everything that was his, and they brought them to the valley of Achor.*

²⁶ Then _⌊they placed_⌋* on top of him a great pile of stones that remains to this day. And Yahweh _⌊turned from his burning anger_⌋,* and thus the name of that place to this day is called the valley of Achor.*

³⁸ Then Joshua returned to Debir, and all of Israel with him, and they fought against it, ³⁹ and he captured it and its king and all its cities, and they struck them with _⌊the the edge of the sword_⌋,* and they utterly destroyed all the people that were in it; he left behind no survivor, just as he had done to Hebron. Thus he did to Debir and its king what he had done to Libnah and its king.

⁴³ And Joshua returned, and all Israel with him, to the camp at Gilgal.

¹⁵ And from there he went up against the inhabitants of Debir (the former name of Debir was Kiriath Sepher).

¹⁷ Now Jonathan and Ahimaaz were staying at En Rogel, so a servant girl used to go and tell them, then they would go and tell King David, for they were not able to be seen coming to the city.

⁹ And Adonijah sacrificed sheep, oxen, and fattened animals near the stone of Zoheleth, which is beside En Rogel. He invited all of his brothers, the sons of the king, and all the men of Judah, the servants of the king.

¹⁰ And Sharon shall become a pasture for* flocks,* and the valley of Achor a resting place for* herds* for my people who have sought me.

⁵ Because their mother was unfaithful;* she who conceived them has acted shamefully, for she said: "I will go after my lovers, the ones who give me my bread, my water, my wool, and my flax, my oil, and my drink."

⁶³ But the descendants* of Judah were unable to drive out the Jebusites, the inhabitants of Jerusalem, so the Jebusites live with the descendants* of Judah in Jerusalem to this day.

¹⁶ the border goes down to the foot* of the mountain, which is opposite the Valley of Ben Hinnom,* which is in the valley of Rephaim to the north; then it does down the valley of Hinnom to the slope of the Jebusites* to the south, and then it goes down to En Rogel.

²⁸ Zela, Haeleph, Jebus (that is, Jerusalem), Gibeah, and Kiriath; fourteen cities and their villages. This is the inheritance of the descendants* of Benjamin according to their families.

⁸ The descendants* of Judah fought against Jerusalem, and they captured it, _⌊put it to the sword_⌋,* and _⌊set the city on fire_⌋.*

²¹ But the descendants* of Benjamin did not drive out the Jebusites* who lived in Jerusalem, so the Jebusites have lived among the descendants* of Benjamin in Jerusalem to this day.

¹⁰ But the man was not willing to spend the night, and he got up and went; and he arrived opposite Jebus (that is, Jerusalem). He had with him a pair of saddled donkeys and his concubine.

¹⁸ Now the Philistines had come, and they spread out in the Valley of Rephaim.

²² _⌊Once again_⌋* the Philistines came up and spread out in the Valley of Rephaim.

¹⁰ He defiled the Topheth which is in the Valley of Ben-Hinnom, _⌊to prevent_⌋* anyone causing his sons or his daughters to pass through the fire for Molech.

³ And he himself burned incense in the valley of Ben-Hinnom and burned his sons in the fire, according to the detestable practices of the nations whom Yahweh drove out before the Israelites.

⁵ And it shall be as _⌊when a reaper gathers_⌋* standing grain and he reaps grain with his arm, and it shall be like one who gathers ears of grain in the valley of Rephaim.

³¹ And they built the high place of Topheth, which is in the Valley of Ben Hinnom, to burn their sons and their daughters in the fire, which I have not commanded, and it did not come into my mind.* ³² Therefore look, days are about to come," _⌊declares_⌋* Yahweh, "and it will no longer be called Topheth or the Valley of Ben Hinnom, but the Valley of the Slaughter, and they will bury in Topheth _⌊until there is no more place_⌋.*

² and go out to the Valley of Ben Hinnom, which is at the entrance of the Gate of the Potsherd, and proclaim there the words that I speak to you.

⁶ "_⌊Therefore_⌋* look, days are about to come," _⌊declares_⌋* Yahweh, "when this place will no longer be called Topheth or the Valley of Ben Hinnom, _⌊but_⌋* the Valley of the Slaughter.

¹⁴ Then Jeremiah came from Topheth, where Yahweh had sent him to prophesy, and he stood in the courtyard of the house of Yahweh and said to all the people,

¹⁷ And the _⌊Israelites_⌋* set out and went to their cities on the third day (their cities were Gibeon, Kephirah, Beeroth, and Kiriath Jearim).

¹⁵ The southern side begins on the outskirts of Kiriath Jearim, and the border continues to the west to the spring of the waters of Nephtoah;

¹² They went up and encamped at Kiriath Jearim in Judah. Therefore they called this place Camp of Dan* to this day; it is west of Kiriath Jearim.

² David got up and went and all the people who were with him, from Baale-judah to bring up from there the ark of God which is called the name, the name of Yahweh of hosts, _⌊upon which the cherubim sit_⌋.*

⁶ And David and all Israel went up to Baalah, Kiriath-Jearim of Judah, to bring up from there the ark of Yahweh God who is enthroned between the cherubim, which is called the name.

¹² _⌊And in the course of time_⌋* the daughter of Shua, the wife of Judah, died. When Judah was consoled he went up to his sheepshearers, he and his friend Hirah the Adullamite, to Timnah. ¹³ And it was told to Tamar, saying, "Look, your father-in-law is going up to Timnah to shear his sheep."

⁵⁷ Kain, Gibeah, and Timnah; ten cities and their villages.

¹ And Samson went down to Timnah, and he saw a woman in Timnah from the daughters of the Philistines.

⁵ And Samson and his father and mother went down to Timnah, and they came to the vineyards of Timnah, and suddenly a young lion came roaring to meet him.

¹² The cows went straight on the way on the road to Beth Shemesh, on the one main road, _⌊lowing as they went_⌋.* They did not turn aside to the right or to the left, and the rulers of the Philistines were walking after them up to the border of Beth Shemesh. ¹³ Now the people of Beth Shemesh were reaping the wheat harvest in the valley. They lifted their eyes and saw the ark, and they were glad to see it. ¹⁴ The utility cart came to the field of Joshua of Beth Shemesh and stopped there where there was a large stone. They split the wood of the utility cart and sacrificed the cows as a burnt offering to Yahweh. ¹⁵ Then the Levites took down the ark of Yahweh and the container* that was beside it, in which were the gold objects, and they set them on the large stone.* Then the men of Beth Shemesh offered burnt offerings, and they _⌊made_⌋* sacrifices to Yahweh on that day. ¹⁶ The five rulers of the Philistines saw it and returned to Ekron that same day. ¹⁷ Now these are the gold tumors which the Philistines returned as a guilt offering to Yahweh: one for Ashdod, one for Gaza, one for Ashkelon, one for Gath, one for Ekron. ¹⁸ And the gold mice according to the number of all the cities of the Philistines, for their five rulers, from the fortified city to the unwalled village of the open country as far as the great stone, _⌊where they set_⌋* the ark of Yahweh until this day in the field of Joshua of Beth Shemesh. ¹⁹ He* struck seventy men* among the men of Beth Shemesh because they looked into the ark of Yahweh. So the people mourned because Yahweh had struck a great blow among the people. ²⁰ Then the men of Beth Shemesh asked, "Who is able to stand before Yahweh, this holy God? And to whom shall it* go up from us?" ²¹ So they sent messengers to the inhabitants of Kiriath Jearim saying, "The Philistines have returned the ark of Yahweh. Come down and take it up to yourselves."

⁴⁵ Ekron, its towns and villages;

⁴³ Elon, Timnah, Ekron, ⁴⁴ Eltekeh, Gibbethon, Baalath,

¹⁰ So they sent the ark of God to Ekron. But when the ark of God came to Ekron, the Ekronites cried out, saying, "They have brought around the ark of the God of Israel to kill us and our* people!"

¹⁴ The towns* which the Philistines had taken from Israel were returned to Israel from Ekron to Gath, and Israel delivered their territories from the hand of the Philistines. Then there was peace between Israel and the Amorites.

² Ahaziah had fallen through the lattice in his upper room, which was in Samaria, and he was injured. So he sent messengers, and he said to them, "Go, inquire of Baal-Zebub, the god of Ekron, if I will survive this injury." ³ Then the angel of Yahweh spoke to Elijah the Tishbite, "Get up, go up to meet the messengers of the king of Samaria and speak to them, 'Is it because there is no God in Israel that you are going to inquire of Baal-Zebub, the god of Ekron?'

⁶ Then they said to him, "A man came up to meet us, and he said to us, 'Go, return to the king who sent you and speak to him, "Thus says Yahweh, 'Is it because there is no God in Israel that you are sending to inquire of Baal-Zebub the god of Ekron? Therefore the bed upon which you have gone, you will not come down from it, for you will surely die.'" '"

¹⁶ and he said to him, "Thus says Yahweh, 'Because you have sent messengers to inquire of Baal-Zebub, the god of Ekron—is it because there is no God in Israel from whom to inquire his word?—therefore the bed upon which you went, you shall not come down from it, for you shall surely die.'"

⁶ " 'Your western boundary will be the Great Sea;* this will be your western boundary. ⁷ Your northern border will be from the Great Sea;* you will make a boundary from the Great Sea* to Mount Hor.

²⁴ Every place on which the sole of your foot treads, it shall be yours; your boundary shall be from the desert and Lebanon from the river, the river Euphrates, on up to the western sea.*

⁴⁷ Ashdod, its towns and villages; Gaza, its towns and villages, up to the wadi* of Egypt and the Great Sea* and its coast.*

²⁰ _⌊And on the west side_⌋* the Great Sea* shall be the boundary up to opposite Lebo-Hamath. _⌊This is the western boundary_⌋.*

³⁰ And Caleb silenced the people before Moses and said, "Surely, let us go up and let us take possession of it because surely we will be able to prevail over it."

²³ they will not see the land that I swore by oath to their ancestors,* and all those who despised me will not see it. ²⁴ But my servant Caleb, because another spirit was with him, he remained true after me, and I will bring him into the land that _⌊he entered_⌋,* and his offspring will take possession of it.

³⁴ "Then Yahweh heard the sound of your words, and he was angry, and he swore, _⌊saying_⌋,* ³⁵ 'No one of these men* of this evil generation will see the good land that I swore to give to your ancestors,* ³⁶ except Caleb, the son of Jephunneh; he himself* shall see it, and to him I will give the land upon which he has trodden and to his sons* because _⌊he followed Yahweh unreservedly_⌋.'*

⁶ Then the descendants* of Judah came to Joshua at Gilgal; and Caleb son of Jephunneh the Kenizzite said to him, "You know the word that Yahweh said to Moses the man of God at Kadesh Barnea concerning you and me. ⁷ _⌊I was forty years old_⌋* when Moses Yahweh's servant sent me from Kadesh Barnea to spy out the land, and I returned _⌊with an honest report_⌋.* ⁸ My companions who went up with me made the hearts* of the people melt, but I remained true to Yahweh my God. ⁹ And Moses swore on that day, saying, 'Surely the land that your foot has trodden on will be an inheritance to you and your sons forever, because you remained true to Yahweh my God.' ¹⁰ So then, look, Yahweh has kept me alive just as he promised these forty-five years,* from the time that Yahweh spoke this word to Moses while Israel _⌊wandered_⌋* in the wilderness. Now look, today _⌊I am eighty-five years old_⌋.* ¹¹ Today I am still strong, just as on the day that Moses sent me; as my strength was then, so now also is my strength for war _⌊and for daily activities_⌋.* ¹² So now give me this hill country that Yahweh spoke of on that day, for you heard on that day that the Anakites were there, with great and fortified cities. Perhaps Yahweh is with me, and I will drive them out just as Yahweh promised."* ¹³ And Joshua blessed him and gave Hebron to Caleb son of Jephunneh as an inheritance. ¹⁴ Thus Hebron became the inheritance of Caleb son of Jephunneh the Kenizzite to this day, because he remained true to Yahweh the God of Israel. ¹⁵ And the name of Hebron formerly was Kiriath Arba;* Arba was the greatest person among the Anakites. And the land rested from war.

²² They went up through the Negev* and came to Hebron, where* Ahiman, Sheshai, and Talmai the descendants of the Anakites were. (Hebron was built seven years before Zoan in Egypt.) ²³ And they came up to the valley* of Eshcol, and they cut off a vine branch and one cluster of grapes from there; they carried it on a pole between two men, with pomegranates and figs.

³³ There we saw the Nephilim (the descendants* of Anak came from the Nephilim), and we were like grasshoppers in our own sight, and so we were in their eyes."

³⁶ And Joshua went up, and all Israel with him, from Eglon to Hebron, and they fought against it ³⁷ and captured it, and they struck it with _⌊the edge of the sword_⌋,* its king and all its cities, and all the people that were in it; he left behind no survivor, as he had done to Eglon, and he utterly destroyed it and all the people that were in it.

²¹ At that time Joshua came and exterminated the Anakites from the hill country, from Hebron, Debir, Anab, and from all the hill country of Judah, and from all the hill country of Israel; Joshua utterly destroyed them with their cities.

¹⁰ And Judah went against the Canaanites* living in Hebron (the former name of Hebron was Kiriath Arba). And they defeated Sheshai, Ahiman, and Talmai.

²⁰ They gave Hebron to Caleb just as Moses said, and he drove out the three sons of Anak from there.

³ So Adoni-Zedek king of Jerusalem sent word to Hohman king of Hebron, to Piram king of Jarmuth, to Japhia king of Lachish, and to Debir king of Eglon, saying,

³⁸ Then Joshua returned to Debir, and all of Israel with him, and they fought against it,

¹¹ And from there they went to the inhabitants of Debir (the former name of Debir was Kiriath Sepher). ¹² And Caleb said, "Whoever attacks Kiriath Sepher and captures it, I will give to him Acsah my daughter as a wife." ¹³ Othniel son of Kenaz, the younger brother of Caleb, captured it, and he gave to him Acsah his daughter as a wife.

⁶ And Adoni-bezek fled, but they pursued after him; they caught him and cut off _⌊his thumbs and big toes_⌋.*

¹² except Caleb son of Jephunneh the Kenizzite and Joshua son of Nun, because they followed Yahweh wholly.'

⁶ Then the descendants* of Judah came to Joshua at Gilgal; and Caleb son of Jephunneh the Kenizzite said to him, "You know the word that Yahweh said to Moses the man of God at Kadesh Barnea concerning you and me.

¹³ Othniel son of Kenaz, the younger brother of Caleb, captured it, and he gave to him Acsah his daughter as a wife.

⁹ The _⌊Israelites_⌋* cried out to Yahweh, and Yahweh raised up a deliverer for the _⌊Israelites_⌋* who delivered them, Othniel son of Kenaz, Caleb's younger brother.

¹¹ So the land rested forty years. Then Othniel son of Kenaz died.

⁴⁹ She also gave birth to Shaaph the father of Madmannah, Sheva the father of Machbenah and the father of Gibea; and the daughter of Caleb was Acsah.

⁶⁴ And Rebekah lifted up her eyes and saw Isaac. And she got down from the camel.

²³ When Abigail saw David, she hurried and got down from the donkey and fell on her face before _⌊David's anger_⌋,* and she bowed down to the ground.

¹¹ Please take my gift which has been brought to you, for God has dealt graciously with me, and because _⌊I have enough_⌋."* And he urged him, so he took it.

⁷ _⌊And he said this of Judah_⌋,* "Hear, O Yahweh, the voice of Judah, and bring him to his people; his own hands strive* for him, and may you be a help _⌊against_⌋* his foes."

¹⁴ When she came to him, she urged him to ask her father for a field. As she dismounted from the donkey, Caleb said to her, "_⌊What do you want_⌋?"* ¹⁵ And she said to him, "Give me _⌊a gift_⌋;* you have given me the land of the Negev,* and give me also a spring of water." And Caleb gave to her the upper and lower spring.*

²⁷ So then, this gift which your female servant has brought to my lord, may it be given to the young men _⌊who follow my lord_⌋.*

⁵ Therefore I considered it necessary to urge the brothers that they should go on ahead to you and make arrangements in advance for your generous gift that was promised previously, so this would be prepared as a generous gift and not as grudgingly granted.

⁸ Judah, as for you, your brothers shall praise you. Your hand shall be on the neck of your enemies. The sons of your father shall bow down to you. ⁹ Judah is a lion's cub. From the prey, my son, you have gone up. He bowed down; he crouched like a lion and as a lioness. Who shall rouse him? ¹⁰ The scepter shall not depart from Judah, nor the ruler's staff between his feet, until Shiloh comes. And to him shall be the obedience of nations. ¹¹ Binding his donkey to the vine and his donkey's colt to the choice vine, he washes his clothing in the wine and his garment in the blood of grapes. ¹² The eyes are darker than wine, and the teeth whiter than milk.

²¹ And Israel journeyed on and pitched his tent beyond the tower of Eder.*

²⁵ As for the villages in their territories, some from the descendants* of Judah lived in Kiriath-Arba and _⌊its settlements_⌋,* Dibon and _⌊its settlements_⌋,* Jekabzeel and _⌊its settlements_⌋,*

³⁷ They set out from Kadesh and camped at Mount Hor, at the edge of the land of Edom.

¹⁹ "Then we set out from Horeb, and we went through the whole of that great and terrible desert that you saw on the way to the hill country of the Amorites* as Yahweh our God had commanded us, and so we came up to Kadesh Barnea.

²² the king of Kedesh, one; the king of Jokneam in Carmel, one;

⁴ Saul summoned the army and mustered them at Telaim; two hundred thousand foot soldiers and ten thousand men of Judah.

¹⁴ David remained in the wilderness, in the strongholds, and in the hill country in the wilderness of Ziph. And Saul sought him _⌊continually_⌋,* but God did not give him into his hand.

¹⁹ Then the Ziphites went up to Saul at Gibeah, saying, "Is not David hiding among us in the strongholds at Horesh on the hill of Hakilah, which is south of Jeshimon?

²⁴ Then they got up and went to Ziph before Saul.
Now David and his men were in the wilderness of Maon in the Arabah, to the south of Jeshimon.

¹ For the music director, with stringed instruments. A maskil of David, when the Ziphites went and said to Saul, "Is not David hiding himself among us?"*
O God, by your name save me, and by your power vindicate me.

²⁸ And they lived in Beersheba, Moladah, Hazar Shual,

¹⁴ Then Abraham rose up early in the morning and took bread and a skin of water and gave it to Hagar, putting it on her shoulder. And he sent her away with the child, and she went, wandering about in the wilderness, in Beersheba.

³¹ Therefore that place is called Beersheba, because there the two of them swore an oath. ³² And they _⌊made_⌋* a covenant at Beersheba. And Abimelech, and Phicol his army commander stood and returned to the land of the Philistines. ³³ And he* planted a tamarisk tree in Beersheba, and there he called on the name of Yahweh, _⌊the everlasting God_⌋.*

³³ And he called it Sheba. Therefore the name of the city is Beersheba unto this day.

² And they had as their inheritance Beersheba, Sheba, Moladah, ³ Hazar Shual, Balah, Ezem,

⁹ then the border turns from the top of the mountain to the spring of the waters of Nephtoah, and continues* from there to the cities of Mount Ephron; the border then turns to Baalah (that is, Kiriath Jearim); ¹⁰ and the border goes around from Baalah to the west, to Mount Seir, and passes on to the slope of Mount Jearim from the north (that is, Kesalon), and goes down to Beth Shemesh, and passes along by Timnah. ¹¹ The border continues* to the slope of Ekron to the north, then bends around to Shikkeron, it passes on to Mount Baalah and continues to Jabneel; and _⌊the border ends_⌋* at the sea.

²⁹ Bilhah, Ezem, Tolad,

⁴⁵ So the Amalekites* and the Canaanites* who were living on the mountain descended, and they beat them down, up to Hormah.

⁴⁴ The Amorites living in the hill country went out _⌊to oppose you_⌋* and chased you as a swarm of wild honey bees do; and so they _⌊beat_⌋* you down in Seir as far as Hormah.

⁴ Eltolad, Bethul, Hormah,

¹⁷ And Judah went with his brother Simeon, and they defeated the Canaanites* inhabiting Zephath; they utterly destroyed it, so he called the name of the city Hormah.

⁵ Ziklag, Beth Marcaboth, Hazar Susah,

⁶ So Achish gave him Ziklag on that day. (Therefore, Ziklag has belonged to the kings of Judah until this day.)

¹ _⌊Now_⌋* when David and his men came to Ziklag on the third day, the Amalekites had raided the Negev and Ziklag. When they attacked Ziklag, they burned it with fire.

¹ Now these are the ones who came to David at Ziklag while he was still shut up because _⌊of Saul_⌋,* the son of Kish. And they were the mighty warriors helping with the war.

¹¹ the boundary will go down from Shepham to Riblah from the east side of Ain, and the boundary will go down and border on the eastern side of the Sea of Kinnereth.

²⁹ En-Rimmon, Zorah, Jarmuch,

²³ And they came up to the valley* of Eshcol, and they cut off a vine branch and one cluster of grapes from there; they carried it on a pole between two men, with pomegranates and figs.

⁴¹ The border of their inheritance was Zorah, Eshtaol, Ir Shemesh,

²⁵ And the Spirit of Yahweh began to stir him in the camp of Dan, between Zorah and Eshtaol.

³¹ His brothers and _⌊his whole family_⌋* came down and picked him up; and they brought him up and buried him between Zorah and Eshtaol in the tomb of Manoah his father; he judged Israel twenty years.

¹⁷ the king of Tappuah, one; the king of Hepher, one;

⁵³ Janim, Beth-tappuah, Aphekah,

¹⁰ And Yahweh threw them into panic before Israel, who* struck them with a great blow at Gibeon and pursued them by the way of the ascent of Beth-horon and struck them as far as Azekah and Makkedah.

²³ And they did so, and brought him these five kings from the cave, the king of Jerusalem, the king of Hebron, the king of Jarmuth, the king of Lachish, and the king of Eglon.

¹¹ the king of Jarmuth, one; the king of Lachish, one;

¹⁵ the king of Libnah, one; the king of Adullam, one;

⁴⁸ And in the hill country: Shamir, Jattir, Socoh,

¹ The Philistines gathered their camps* for battle and they were gathered at Socoh which belongs to Judah. They camped between Socoh and Azekah in Ephes Dammim.

¹ David went from there and escaped to the cave of Adullam. When his brothers and all his father's household* heard, they came down to him there.

¹⁸ And his Judahite wife bore Jered the father of Gedor, Heber the father of Soco, and Jekuthiel the father of Zanoah. And these were the sons of Bithiah daughter of Pharaoh, whom Mered married.

¹⁵ I will again bring the conqueror upon you, O inhabitants of Mareshah; the glory of Israel will come to Adullam.

⁵² The men of Israel and Judah got up, raised the war cry, and pursued the Philistines _⌊as far as_⌋* the valley* and up to the gates of Ekron. So the slain of the Philistines fell on the way* to Shaaraim up to Gath and as far as Ekron.

⁴⁸ Then Laban said, "This pile of stones is a witness between me and you today." Therefore its name is called Galeed,* ⁴⁹ and Mizpah,* because he said, "Yahweh watch between me and you when _⌊we are out of sight of each other_⌋.*

¹ All the _⌊Israelites_⌋* went out, from Dan to Beersheba, including the land of Gilead, and they gathered as one body* to Yahweh at Mizpah.

⁵ And the _⌊Israelites_⌋* said, "Who in the assembly has not come up from all the tribes of Israel to Yahweh?" For a solemn oath was taken concerning whoever did not come up to Yahweh at Mizpah, saying, "He will certainly be put to death."

⁵ Then Samuel said, "Gather all Israel to Mizpah, and I will pray to Yahweh for you." ⁶ So they gathered to Mizpah and drew water and poured it out before Yahweh. They fasted on that day and said there, "We have sinned against Yahweh!" So Samuel judged the _⌊Israelites_⌋* at Mizpah.

¹⁶ He used to go on the circuit _⌊from year to year_⌋.* He went around Bethel, Gilgal, and Mizpah, and he judged Israel in all these places.

¹⁷ Then Samuel summoned the people to Yahweh at Mizpah,

⁷ He also killed ten thousand Edomites in the Valley of Salt, and he seized Sela in the battle, and he called its name Jokteel, until this day.

³¹ And Joshua passed on, and all of Israel with him, from Libnah to Lachish, and _⌊he laid siege to it_⌋* and fought against it. ³² And Yahweh gave Lachish into the hand of Israel, and he captured it on the second day. He struck it with _⌊the edge of the sword_⌋,* and everyone in it, just as he did to Libnah.

¹¹ the king of Jarmuth, one; the king of Lachish, one; ¹² the king of Eglon, one; the king of Gezer, one;

¹⁹ They conspired against him in Jerusalem, so he fled to Lachish. But they sent men after him to Lachish, and they killed him there.

¹⁴ So Hezekiah king of Judah sent word to the king of Assyria at Lachish, saying, "I have done wrong. Withdraw from me. What you impose on me I will bear." So the king of Assyria imposed on Hezekiah king of Judah three hundred talents of silver and thirty talents of gold.

¹⁷ So the king of Assyria sent the commander in chief, the chief eunuch, and the _⌊chief advisor_⌋* from Lachish to King Hezekiah at Jerusalem with a heavy army. They went up and came to Jerusalem, then they went up and came and stood at the aqueduct of the upper pool which is on the main road of the _⌊washer's_⌋* field.

⁸ When the chief commander returned, he found the king of Assyria fighting against Libnah, for he had heard that he had departed from Lachish.

¹ Josiah was eight years old when he began to reign, and he reigned thirty-one years in Jerusalem. The name of his mother was Jedidah the daughter of Adaiah from Bozkath.

²¹ and all the people returned to the camp safely* to Joshua at Makkedah. _⌊No one spoke_⌋* against the _⌊Israelites_⌋.*

²⁸ Joshua captured Makkedah on that day, and he struck it and its king with _⌊the edge of the sword_⌋;* he utterly destroyed it and everyone that was in it. He did not leave behind a survivor. So he did to the king of Makkedah just as he did to the king of Jericho.

¹⁶ the king of Makkedah, one; the king of Bethel, one;

²⁹ And Joshua passed on, and all of Israel with him, from Makkedah to Libnah, and he fought against Libnah.

⁷ Ain, Rimmon, Ether, and Ashan; four cities and their villages,

²² So Edom has rebelled _⌊against the rule_⌋* of Judah until this day; then Libnah also rebelled at that time.

⁵ And once again she bore a son, and she called his name Shelah. And he* was in Chezib when she bore him.

¹ Now they told David, "Look, the Philistines are fighting in Keilah and they are raiding the threshing floors." ² So David inquired of Yahweh, saying, "Shall I go and attack these Philistines?" And Yahweh said to David, "Go and attack the Philistines and save* Keilah." ³ But David's men said to him, "Look, we are afraid here in Judah. _⌊How much more_⌋* if we go to Keilah to the battle lines of the Philistines?" ⁴ So David again inquired of Yahweh, and Yahweh answered him and said, "Get up, go down to Keilah, for I am giving the Philistines into your hand." ⁵ So David and his men went to Keilah and fought with the Philistines. They drove off their livestock and _⌊dealt them a heavy blow_⌋.* So David saved* the inhabitants of Keilah. ⁶ _⌊Now when Abiathar the son of Ahimelech fled_⌋* to David at Keilah, he went down with an ephod in his hand. ⁷ When it was told to Saul that David had gone to Keilah, Saul said, "God _⌊has given him_⌋* into my hand, because he has shut himself in by going into a city with _⌊two barred gates_⌋.* ⁸ Saul then summoned all of the army for the battle, to go down to Keilah to lay a siege against David and his men. ⁹ When David learned that Saul was plotting evil against him, he said to Abiathar the priest, "Bring the ephod here." ¹⁰ And David said, "O Yahweh, God of Israel, your servant has clearly heard that Saul is seeking to come to Keilah to destroy the city because of me. ¹¹ Will the rulers of Keilah deliver me into his hand? Will Saul come down as your servant has heard? O Yahweh, God of Israel, please tell your servant!" And Yahweh said, "He will come down." ¹² Then David said, "Will the rulers of Keilah deliver me and my men into the hand of Saul?" And Yahweh said, "They will deliver you." ¹³ So David and his men got up, about six hundred men, and went out from Keilah and wandered wherever they could go. When it was told to Saul that David had escaped from Keilah, _⌊he stopped his pursuit_⌋.* ¹⁴ David remained in the wilderness, in the strongholds, and in the hill country in the wilderness of Ziph. And Saul sought him _⌊continually_⌋,* but God did not give him into his hand.

¹⁴ Therefore you will give parting gifts to Moresheth-Gath; the houses of Achzib will be a deception to the kings of Israel. ¹⁵ I will again bring the conqueror upon you, O inhabitants of Mareshah; the glory of Israel will come to Adullam.

¹⁷ Now these are the gold tumors which the Philistines returned as a guilt offering to Yahweh: one for Ashdod, one for Gaza, one for Ashkelon, one for Gath, one for Ekron.

⁸ And I will cut off the inhabitants from Ashdod and the one who takes hold of the scepter of Ashkelon. I will also turn my hand against Ekron, and the remnant of the Philistines will perish," says the Lord Yahweh.

⁴ For Gaza will be abandoned, and Ashkelon as a desolation. As for Ashdod, at noon they will drive her away, and Ekron shall be uprooted.

⁵ Ashkelon will see and will be afraid, and Gaza will writhe exceedingly, and Ekron also, because its hope is ruined.* And the king from Gaza will perish, and Ashkelon will not be inhabited. ⁶ A mongrel people* will dwell in Ashdod, and I will cut down the pride of the Philistines. ⁷ I will remove its* blood from its* mouth, and its* abominations from between its* teeth. And it* too will be a remnant for our God; and it* will be like a tribal chief* in Judah, and Ekron will be like the Jebusite.

¹ Now the Philistines had captured* the ark of God and brought it from Ebenezer to Ashdod.

⁶ Now the hand of Yahweh was heavy against the Ashdodites and he destroyed them and struck them with tumors,* both in Ashdod and its territories.

⁶ And he went out and made war against the Philistines, and he broke down the wall of Gath and the wall of Jabneh and the wall of Ashdod, and he built cities in Ashdod and among the Philistines.

²³ Also in those days I saw Jews who had married women of Ashdod, Ammon, and Moab. ²⁴ Half of their children spoke Ashdodite and could not speak Judean, but only the tongues of other nations.

¹ In the year _⌊the commander-in-chief came_⌋* to Ashdod, when Sargon the king of Assyria sent him, and he fought against Ashdod and he took it,

⁵ The boundary will turn from Azmon to the valley of Egypt, and its limits will be to the sea. ⁶ " 'Your western boundary will be the Great Sea;* this will be your western boundary.

⁴ _⌊it passes on_⌋* to Azmon, continues* by the wadi of Egypt, and _⌊it ends_⌋* at the sea. This will be your southern border.

¹ Samson went down to Gaza; there he saw a prostitute and _⌊had sex with her_⌋.* ² The Gazites were told, "Samson has come here," so they surrounded the place and lay in ambush for him all night at the city gate. They kept silent all night, saying, "We will wait until the morning light, and then we will kill him." ³ But Samson lay until the middle of the night; he got up in the middle of the night and took hold of the doors of the city gate and the two door posts, tore them loose with the bar, put them on his shoulders, and carried them up to the top of the hill that is _⌊in front of_⌋* Hebron. ⁴ After this he fell in love with a woman in the wadi* of Sorek, and her name was Delilah. ⁵ And the rulers of the Philistines came up to her and said, "Entice him and find out what makes his strength so great, and how we can overpower him, so that we may bind him up in order to subdue him; each of us will give you eleven hundred pieces of silver. ⁶ So Delilah said to Samson, "Please tell me what makes your strength so great, and with what can you be tied up to subdue you?" ⁷ Samson said to her, "If you tie me up with seven fresh bowstrings that are not dried up, I will become weak like everyone else." ⁸ So the rulers of the Philistines brought up to her seven fresh bowstrings that were not dried up, and she tied him up with them. ⁹ The ambush was sitting in wait for her in an inner room. And she said to him, "The Philistines are upon you Samson!" And he snapped the bowstrings just as flax fiber snaps when it comes close to fire. And the secret of his strength remained unknown. ¹⁰ Delilah said to Samson, "Look, you have mocked me and told me lies. Please tell me how you can be bound." ¹¹ He said to her, "If they tie me tightly with new ropes that have not been used, I will become weak and be like everyone else." ¹² So Delilah took new ropes and tied him up with them, and she said to him, "The Philistines are upon you, Samson!" (The ambush was sitting in an inner room.) But he snapped them from his arms like thread. ¹³ And Delilah said to Samson, "Until now you have mocked me and told lies to me. Tell me how you can be bound." And he said to her, "If you weave seven locks of my head with warp-threads."* ¹⁴ She fastened it with the pin and said to him, "The Philistines are upon you, Samson!" And Samson woke up from his sleep and tore loose the loom pin of the web and the warp-threads.* ¹⁵ And she said to him, "How can you say, 'I love you,' when your heart is not with me? You have mocked me these three times, and you have not told me how your strength is so great." ¹⁶ And because she nagged him day after day with her words, and pestered him, _⌊his soul grew impatient to the point of death_⌋.* ¹⁷ So _⌊he confided everything to her_⌋,* and he said to her, "A razor _⌊has never touched_⌋* my head, for I am a _⌊Nazirite of God_⌋* _⌊from birth_⌋.* If I am shaved my strength will leave me, and I will become weak, like everyone else. ¹⁸ Delilah realized that _⌊he had confided in her_⌋,* so she sent and called the rulers of the Philistines, saying, "Come up one more time, for _⌊he has confided in me_⌋."* And the rulers of the Philistines came up, and they brought the money _⌊with them_⌋.* ¹⁹ And she put him to sleep on her lap; then she called the men* and shaved off seven locks of his head. Then she began to subdue him,* and his strength went away from him. ²⁰ And she said to him, "The Philistines are upon you, Samson!" And he woke up from his sleep and said, "I will go out just like every other time and shake myself free," but he did not know that Yahweh had left him. ²¹ And the Philistines seized him, gouged his eyes, and brought him to Gaza. They tied him up with bronze shackles, and he became a grinder _⌊in the prison_⌋.*

¹ The word of Yahweh that came to Jeremiah the prophet concerning the Philistines _⌊before_⌋* Pharaoh attacked Gaza.

⁵ Baldness has come upon Gaza, Ashkelon is destroyed. O remnant of their valley, _⌊how long_⌋* will you cut yourself with a blade?

⁶ Thus says Yahweh: "For three transgressions of Gaza and for four I will not revoke the punishment,* because they exiled a whole community, handing them over to Edom! ⁷ So I will send a fire against the wall of Gaza and it will devour its citadel fortresses.

²⁶ Now an angel of the Lord spoke to Philip, saying, "Get up and go toward the south* on the road that goes down from Jerusalem to Gaza." (This is a desert road.)

¹⁴ Jattir and its pasturelands, Eshtemoa and its pasturelands,

¹¹ And from there they went to the inhabitants of Debir (the former name of Debir was Kiriath Sepher).

⁴¹ Joshua struck them from Kadesh Barnea to Gaza, and all the land of Goshen up to Gibeon;

¹⁶ So Joshua took all this land: the hill country, all the Negev,* all the land of Goshen,* the Shephelah,* the Arabah,* and the hill country of Israel and its Shephelah,*

¹² Absalom sent for Ahithophel the Gilonite, the advisor of David, from his city Giloh, while he offered the sacrifices. The conspiracy _⌊grew in strength_⌋,* and the people were going and _⌊increasing_⌋* with Absalom.

¹¹ The oracle of Dumah:
One is calling to me from Seir,
"Watchman, what _⌊of_⌋* the night? Watchman, what _⌊of_⌋* the night?"

² And Sarah died in Kiriath Arba; that is Hebron, in the land of Canaan.

¹⁵ And the name of Hebron formerly was Kiriath Arba;* Arba was the greatest person among the Anakites. And the land rested from war.

¹³ _⌊According to the commandment of Yahweh to Joshua_⌋,* he gave to Caleb son of Jephunneh a plot of ground among the descendants* of Judah, Kiriath Arba,* which is Hebron (Arba was Anak's father).

²⁴ Ziph, Telem, Bealoth,

¹⁴ David remained in the wilderness, in the strongholds, and in the hill country in the wilderness of Ziph. And Saul sought him _⌊continually_⌋,* but God did not give him into his hand. ¹⁵ When David realized that Saul had gone out to seek his life, David was in the wilderness of Ziph at Horesh.

²⁵ And Saul and his men went to seek him, and they told David, so he went down to the rock and stayed in the wilderness of Maon. When Saul heard this, he pursued David into the wilderness of Maon.

² Now there was a man in Maon, whose business was in Carmel. The man was very rich and _⌊owned_⌋* three thousand sheep and a thousand goats. _⌊Now_⌋* the shearing of his sheep was taking place in Carmel.

⁷ Now I have heard that _⌊you have shearers_⌋.* Now while your shepherds were with us, we did not mistreat them, and nothing of theirs was missing, all the days they were in Carmel.

¹ The Ziphites came to Saul at Gibeah, saying, "Is not David hiding on the hill of Hakilah opposite Jeshimon?" ² Then Saul got up and went down to the wilderness of Ziph, and three thousand chosen men of Israel with him, to seek David in the wilderness of Ziph.

⁴² So Ahab went up to eat and to drink while Elijah went to the top of Carmel, bent down to the earth, and put his face between his knees.

¹⁰ And he built towers in the desert and hewed many cisterns, for he had much livestock, both in the Shephelah and on the plain, along with farmers and vinedressers in the hills and in the fertile lands, for he loved the soil.

² It shall blossom abundantly, and it shall rejoice indeed with rejoicing and exulting. The glory of Lebanon shall be given to it, the majesty of Carmel and Sharon. _⌊They are the ones who_⌋* shall see the glory of Yahweh, the majesty of our God.

¹² _⌊And in the course of time_⌋* the daughter of Shua, the wife of Judah, died. When Judah was consoled he went up to his sheepshearers, he and his friend Hirah the Adullamite, to Timnah.

¹⁰ and the border goes around from Baalah to the west, to Mount Seir, and passes on to the slope of Mount Jearim from the north (that is, Kesalon), and goes down to Beth Shemesh, and passes along by Timnah.

¹ That which came as the word of Yahweh to Jeremiah concerning the matter* of the severe drought.

³⁹ And they went to the entrance of Gedor, up to the east side of the valley, to seek pasture for their flocks.

¹⁴ Then the border changes direction and turns to the western side southward, from the mountain that _⌊is opposite_⌋* Beth-Horon to the south. _⌊It ends_⌋* at Kiriath Baal (that is, Kiriath Jearim), a town belonging to the descendants* of Judah. This is the western side.

¹ The men of Kiriath Jearim came and brought up the ark of Yahweh, and they brought it to the house of Abinadab in Gibeah. They consecrated Eleazer his son to guard the ark of Yahweh.

⁶ the border goes up to Beth-hoglah and passes along north of Beth Arabah; and the border goes up the stone of Bohan son of Reuben;

¹⁸ It passes on to the slope opposite the Arabah* to the north, and it goes down to the Arabah.*

²⁹ * David went up from there and stayed in the strongholds of En Gedi.

² And they came and reported it to Jehoshaphat, saying, "A great multitude from beyond the sea, from Aram,* is coming against you. Now behold, they are in Hazazon Tamar" (that is, En Gedi).

⁶ The king and his men went to Jerusalem, to the Jebusites, the inhabitants of the land. They said to David, "You will not come here, for even the blind and the lame can turn you back, saying, 'David cannot come here.'" ⁷ David captured the fortress of Zion, the city of David. ⁸ David had said, "On that day _⌊when we attack the Jebusites_⌋,* one must attack the lame and the blind, those who hate the soul of David, by means of the water supply." For thus the blind and the lame would say, "He cannot come into the house." ⁹ David occupied the fortress and called it the city of David. And David built all around it from the Millo and _⌊inward_⌋.*

⁴ And David and all Israel went to Jerusalem (that is Jebus). And the Jebusites, the inhabitants of the land, were there. ⁵ And the inhabitants of Jebus said to David, "You will not enter here." But David captured the stronghold of Zion; that is, the city of David. ⁶ Then David said, "Whoever strikes the Jebusites first will be chief and commander." And Joab the son of Zeruiah went up first and became chief. ⁷ And David lived in the fortress. Therefore they called it the city of David. ⁸ And he built the city all around from the Millo and up to the circuit. And Joab restored the remainder of the city.

¹⁴ For we know that the law is spiritual, but I am fleshly, _⌊sold into slavery to sin_⌋*. ¹⁵ For what I am doing I do not understand, because what I want to do, this I do not practice, but what I hate, this I do. ¹⁶ But if what I do not want to do, this I do, I agree with the law that it is good. ¹⁷ But now I am no longer the one doing it, but sin that lives in me. ¹⁸ For I know that good does not live in me, that is, in my flesh. For the willing is present in me, but the doing of the good is not. ¹⁹ For the good that I want to do, I do not do, but the evil that I do not want to do, this I do. ²⁰ But if what I do not want to do, this I am doing, I am no longer the one doing it, but sin that lives in me. ²¹ Consequently, I find the principle with me, the one who wants to do good, that evil is present with me.*
