¹ These are the words that Moses spoke to all of Israel _⌊on the other side of_⌋* the Jordan in the desert,* in the desert plateau* opposite Suph, between Paran and between Tophel and Laban and Hazeroth and Dizahab. ² It is a journey of _⌊eleven days_⌋* from Herob _⌊by the way of Mount Seir_⌋* up to Kadesh Barnea. ³ _⌊And it was_⌋* in the fortieth year, on the eleventh month, on the first day of the month, Moses spoke to the _⌊Israelites_⌋* according to all that Yahweh had instructed him to speak to them. ⁴ This happened _⌊after defeating_⌋* Sihon king of the Amorites, who was reigning* in Heshbon, and Og the king of Bashan, who was reigning* in Ashtaroth in Edrei. ⁵ On the other side of * the Jordan in the land of Moab Moses began to explain this law,* _⌊saying_⌋:* ⁶ "Yahweh our God spoke to us at Horeb, _⌊saying_⌋,* 'You have stayed _⌊long enough_⌋* at this mountain. ⁷ Turn now and _⌊move on_⌋,* and go into the hill of the Amorites* and to all of the neighboring regions* in the Jordan _⌊Valley_⌋* in the hill country and in the Negev and in the coastal area along the sea, into the land of the Canaanites* and into the Lebanon, as far as the great river Euphrates. ⁸ Look, I have set the land _⌊before you_⌋;* go and take possession of the land that Yahweh swore to your ancestors,* to Abraham, to Isaac, and to Jacob, to give it to them and to their offspring after them.' ⁹ "And I spoke to them at that time, _⌊saying_⌋,* 'I am not able to bear you alone. ¹⁰ Yahweh your God has multiplied you, and look; you are today as the stars of the heaven _⌊in number_⌋.* ¹¹ Yahweh, the God of your ancestors,* may he add to you as you are now a thousand times, and may he bless you just as he _⌊promised you_⌋.* ¹² How can I bear you _⌊by myself_⌋,* your burden and your load and your strife? ¹³ Choose for yourselves _⌊wise and discerning and knowledgeable men_⌋* for each of your tribes, and I will appoint them as your leaders.' ¹⁴ "And you answered me, and you said, 'The thing you have said to do is good.' ¹⁵ And so I took the leaders of your tribes, wise and knowledgeable men, and then I appointed them as leaders over you as commanders of groups of thousands and commanders of groups of hundreds and commanders of groups of fifties and commanders of groups of tens as officials for your tribes. ¹⁶ And at that time I instructed your judges, saying, '_⌊hear out your fellow men_⌋,* and then judge fairly* between a man and between his brother and between _⌊his opponent who is a resident alien_⌋.* ¹⁷ You must not _⌊be partial_⌋* _⌊in your judgment_⌋; * hear out the small person as also the great person; _⌊do not be intimidated by any person_⌋,* because the judgment is God's; and the case that is too difficult* for you, bring it to me, and I will hear it out.' ¹⁸ And so I instructed you at that time concerning all of the things that you should do. ¹⁹ "Then we set out from Horeb, and we went through the whole of that great and terrible desert that you saw on the way to the hill country of the Amorites* as Yahweh our God had commanded us, and so we came up to Kadesh Barnea. ²⁰ I said to you, '_⌊You have reached_⌋* the hill country of the Amorites* that Yahweh our God is giving to us. ²¹ See, Yahweh your God has set before you the land; go up and possess it as Yahweh the God of your ancestors* said to you; do not fear and do not be dismayed.' ²² "Then all of you approached me, and you said, 'Let us send men _⌊before us_⌋,* and let them explore the land for us, and let them bring back _⌊a report_⌋* to us concerning the way that _⌊we should take_⌋* and concerning the cities that we shall come to.' ²³ The plan was good _⌊in my opinion_⌋,* and so I took from among you twelve men, _⌊one from each tribe_⌋.* ²⁴ And they _⌊set out_⌋* and _⌊went up into the hill country_⌋,* and they went up to the wadi* of Eschol, and they spied out the land. ²⁵ They took in their hands* _⌊some of the fruit_⌋* of the land, and they brought it down to us, and they brought to us back _⌊a report_⌋,* and they said, 'The land that Yahweh our God is giving to us is good.' ²⁶ But you were not willing to go up, and you rebelled against the _⌊command_⌋* of Yahweh your God. ²⁷ And you grumbled in your tents, and you said, 'Because of the hatred of Yahweh toward us he has brought us out from the land of Egypt to give us into the hand of the Amorites* to destroy us. ²⁸ Where can we go up? Our brothers have _⌊made our hearts melt_⌋,* _⌊saying_⌋,* "The people are greater* and taller than we are,* and there are great fortified cities reaching up to heaven, and we saw the sons of the Anakites living there." ' ²⁹ "And so I said to you, 'Do not be terrified, and do not fear them. ³⁰ Yahweh your God, who is going _⌊before you_⌋,* will himself* fight for you, _⌊just as_⌋* he did for you in Egypt before your eyes, ³¹ and just as he did in the wilderness* when* you saw that* Yahweh your God carried you, just as someone* carries his son, all along the way that you traveled until _⌊you reached_⌋* this place.' ³² But through all of this you did not trust in Yahweh your God, ³³ _⌊who goes_⌋* _⌊before you_⌋* on your* way, seeking a place for your encampment, in fire at night and in a cloud by day, to show you the way that _⌊you should go_⌋.* ³⁴ "Then Yahweh heard the sound of your words, and he was angry, and he swore, _⌊saying_⌋,* ³⁵ 'No one of these men* of this evil generation will see the good land that I swore to give to your ancestors,* ³⁶ except Caleb, the son of Jephunneh; he himself* shall see it, and to him I will give the land upon which he has trodden and to his sons* because _⌊he followed Yahweh unreservedly_⌋.'* ³⁷ Even with me Yahweh was angry because of you, saying, 'Not even you shall enter there. ³⁸ Joshua, the son of Nun, _⌊your assistant_⌋,* will go there; encourage him because he will cause Israel to inherit it. ³⁹ And your little children, who you thought shall become plunder, and your sons, who do not today know good or bad, shall themselves* go there, and I will give it to them, and they shall take possession of it. ⁴⁰ But you turn and set out in the direction of the wilderness by way of the _⌊Red Sea_⌋.'* ⁴¹ "You replied and said to me, 'We have sinned against Yahweh, and now we will go up and fight according to all that Yahweh our God commanded us'; and so each man fastened on _⌊his battle gear_⌋,* and you regarded it as easy to go up into the hill country. ⁴² So Yahweh said to me, 'Say to them, "You shall not go up, and you shall not fight because I am not in your midst; you will be defeated _⌊before_⌋* your enemies." ' ⁴³ So I spoke to you, but you did not listen; you rebelled against the _⌊command of Yahweh_⌋;* you behaved presumptuously, and you went up into the hill country. ⁴⁴ The Amorites living in the hill country went out _⌊to oppose you_⌋* and chased you as a swarm of wild honey bees do; and so they _⌊beat_⌋* you down in Seir as far as Hormah. ⁴⁵ So you returned and wept _⌊before Yahweh_⌋;* but Yahweh did not listen to your voice and did not pay any attention to you. ⁴⁶ You stayed in Kadesh many days; such were the days that you stayed there.

²¹ And he lived in the wilderness of Paran. And his mother took a wife for him from the land of Egypt.

¹² And the _⌊Israelites_⌋* set out for their journey* from the desert of Sinai, and the cloud dwelled in the desert of Paran.

³⁵ From Kibroth Hattaavah* the people set out to Hazeroth; and they stayed* in Hazeroth.

¹⁶ And afterward the people set out from Hazeroth, and they encamped in the desert of Paran.

³ So Moses sent them from the desert of Paran on the command of Yahweh; all of the men were _⌊leaders_⌋* of the _⌊Israelites_⌋.*

²⁶ And they came* to Moses and Aaron and to the entire community of the _⌊Israelites_⌋* in the desert of Paran at Kadesh; they brought back word to them and to all the community, and they showed them the fruit of the land.

⁵ They said, "If we have found favor in _⌊your sight_⌋,* let this land be given to your servants as property; do not lead us across the Jordan."

¹⁹ For we will not take possession with them from across the Jordan and beyond because our inheritance has come to us from across the Jordan to the east."

³² We ourselves will cross over armed _⌊before_⌋* Yahweh to the land of Canaan, and the property of our inheritance will remain with us beyond the Jordan."

¹⁷ They set out from Kibroth Hattaavah and camped at Hazeroth. ¹⁸ They set out from Hazeroth and camped at Rithmah.

¹⁵ The two and a half tribes have taken their inheritance from beyond the Jordan across Jericho, east toward the sunrise."

¹⁴ You will give three cities across the Jordan and three cities in the land of Canaan; they will be cities of refuge.

² Then* he said,
"Yahweh came from Sinai, and he dawned upon them from Seir; he shone forth from Mount Paran, and he came with myriads of holy ones, at his right hand a fiery law for them.*

¹ Now* when all the kings who were beyond the Jordan in the hill country and in the Shephelah,* and on all the coast of the great sea toward Lebanon*—the Hittites,* the Amorites,* the Canaanites,* the Perizzites,* the Hivites,* and the Jebusites*—heard of this,

¹⁰ and of all that he did to the two kings of the Amorites who were beyond the Jordan—to Sihon king of Heshbon and to Og king of Bashan, who was in Ashtaroth.

⁴ So then, Yahweh your God has given rest to your kinsmen,* just as he promised them; so then, turn and go to your tents to the land of your possession, which Moses Yahweh's servant gave to you beyond the Jordan.

⁷ And to the half-tribe of Manasseh Moses had given a possession in Bashan, but to the other half Joshua had given a possession with their kinsmen* beyond the Jordan to the west; and when Joshua sent them to their tents and blessed them,

¹ Now Samuel died, and all Israel assembled and mourned for him. They buried him at his house at Ramah. Then David got up and went down to the wilderness of Paran.

³ God came from Teman; the Holy One from Mount Paran. Selah His splendor covers the heavens, and his praise fills the earth.

¹ And Moses was a shepherd with the flock* of Jethro, his father-in-law, the priest of Midian, and he led the flock to the west of the desert, and he came to the mountain of God, to Horeb.

¹⁴ " 'And if you bring to Yahweh a grain offering of firstfruits, you must bring an ear of new grain roasted by fire, coarsely crushed ripe grain, as the grain offering of your firstfruits.

²³ Then* Moses and Aaron entered the tent of assembly. When* they came out, they blessed* the people, and Yahweh's glory appeared to all the people.

¹⁷ Please let us go through your land. We will not go through a field or vineyard, and we will not drink water from a well. We will go along the road of the king; we will not turn aside right or left until we have gone through your territory.'" ¹⁸ Then Edom said to him, "You will not pass through us* lest _⌊we will go out_⌋* to meet you with the sword." ¹⁹ The _⌊Israelites_⌋* said to him, "We will go up on the main road, and if we* and our livestock* drink your water, we will pay for it.* It is only a small matter; let us pass through on our feet."* ²⁰ But he said, "You will not go through." And Edom went out to meet _⌊them_⌋* with a large army and a strong hand. ²¹ So Edom refused to give Israel passage through his territory, and Israel turned aside from him.

⁸ This is what your fathers did when I sent them from Kadesh Barnea to see the land.

⁴⁴ The Amorites living in the hill country went out _⌊to oppose you_⌋* and chased you as a swarm of wild honey bees do; and so they _⌊beat_⌋* you down in Seir as far as Hormah.

⁴ and instruct* the people, _⌊saying_⌋,* "You are about to cross through the territory of your brothers, the descendants* of Esau, who are living in Seir; they will be afraid of you, and so be very careful.

⁸ And so we passed by our brothers, the descendants* of Esau, who live in Seir, past the road of the Arabah,* from Elath and Ezion Geber, and we turned and traveled along the route of the desert* of Moab.

²³ And when Yahweh sent you out from Kadesh Barnea, _⌊saying_⌋,* 'Go up and take possession of the land that I have given you,' you rebelled against the command of Yahweh your God, and you did not believe him, and you did not listen to his voice.

⁶ Then the descendants* of Judah came to Joshua at Gilgal; and Caleb son of Jephunneh the Kenizzite said to him, "You know the word that Yahweh said to Moses the man of God at Kadesh Barnea concerning you and me.

¹ Then the entire community of the _⌊Israelites_⌋* came to the desert of Zin on the first month, and the people stayed in Kadesh; Miriam died and was buried there.

³⁸ Aaron the priest went up to Mount Hor at the _⌊command_⌋* of Yahweh, and he died there in the fortieth year after the _⌊Israelites_⌋* had gone out from the land of Egypt, in the fifth month on the first day of the month.

¹ "Now, Israel, listen to the rules and to the regulations that I am teaching you to do, in order that you may live and you may go in and you may take possession of the land that Yahweh, the God of your ancestors,* is giving to you. ² You must not add to the word that I am commanding you, and you shall not take away from it in order to keep* the commands of Yahweh your God that I am commanding you to observe.

²¹ Israel sent messengers to Sihon, the king of the Amorites,* saying, ²² "Let us go through your land; we will not turn aside into a field or vineyard; we will not drink well water along the way of the king until we have gone through your territory." ²³ But Sihon did not allow Israel to go through his territory. Sihon gathered all his people and went out to meet Israel; he came to the desert, to Jahaz, and he fought against Israel. ²⁴ But Israel struck him with the edge of the sword, and they took possession of his land from Arnon to Jabbok, until the _⌊Ammonites_⌋,* because the boundary of the _⌊Ammonites_⌋* was strong. ²⁵ Israel took all these cities, and Israel inhabited all the cities of the Amorites,* in Heshbon, and in all its environs.* ²⁶ Because Heshbon was the city of Sihon king of the Amorites,* who had fought against the former king of Moab and taken all his land from his hand until Arnon. ²⁷ Thus the ones who quote proverbs say,
"Come to Heshbon! Let it be built! And let the city of Sihon be established. ²⁸ Because fire went out from Heshbon, a flame from the city of Sihon; it consumed Ar of Moab, the lords of the* high places of Arnon. ²⁹ Woe to you, Moab! You have perished, people of Chemosh. He has given his sons as fugitives, and his daughters into captivity, to the king of the Amorites,* Sihon. ³⁰ We destroyed them; Heshbon has perished up to Dibon; we laid waste up to Nophah, which _⌊reaches_⌋* Medeba." ³¹ Thus Israel lived in the land of the Amorites.* ³² Moses sent to explore Jaazer; they captured _⌊its environs_⌋* and dispossessed the Amorites* who were there. ³³ Then they turned and went up by the way of the Bashan, and Og king of the Bashan and all his people went out to meet them for battle at Edrei. ³⁴ And Yahweh said to Moses, "Do not fear him because I will give him and all his people and all his land into your hand. You will do to him just as you did to Sihon king of the Amorites,* who was living in Heshbon." ³⁵ And so they destroyed him and his sons, and all his people until they had not spared a survivor; and they took possession of his land.

²⁶ "So I sent messengers from the wilderness* of Kedemoth to Sihon king of Heshbon; I sent terms of peace, _⌊saying_⌋,*

² Sihon king of the Amorites, who lived in Heshbon, and ruled from Aroer, which is on the edge of the wadi* of Arnon, from the middle of the valley and half of Gilead, up to the _⌊Jabbok River_⌋,* which marks the border of the _⌊Ammonites_⌋;* ³ and the Arabah* up to the Kinnereth Sea* to the east, and as far as the sea of Arabah, the Salt Sea* to the east, _⌊in the direction of_⌋* Beth Jeshimoth, and to the area southward, _⌊at the foot of_⌋* the slopes of Pisgah;* ⁴ the territory of Og king of Bashan, one of the last of the Rephaites, who lived at Ashtaroth and Edrei ⁵ and ruled over Mount Hermon and Salecah and over all Bashan up to the border of the Geshurites* and the Maacathites,* and half of Gilead, as far as the border of Sihon king of Heshbon. ⁶ Moses Yahweh's servant and the _⌊Israelites_⌋* defeated them; and Moses Yahweh's servant gave it as a possession to the Reubenites,* the Gadites,* and the half-tribe of Manasseh.

¹⁰ and all the cities of Sihon king of the Amorites,* who reigned in Heshbon up to the border of the _⌊Ammonites_⌋;* ¹¹ and Gilead, and the border of the Geshurite* and the Maacathites,* all of _⌊Mount Hermon_⌋,* and Bashan up to Salecah; ¹² all the kingdom of Og in Bashan, who reigned in Ashtaroth and Edrei—he was left over from the survivors* of the Rephaim; these Moses had defeated and driven out.

²² And you gave them kingdoms and nations and allotted them a portion. They took into possession the land of Sihon king of Heshbon and the land of Og king of Bashan.

¹¹ Sihon the king of the Amorites, and Og the king of Bashan, and all the kingdoms of Canaan—

¹⁹ Sihon the king of the Amorites, for his loyal love endures forever. ²⁰ And Og the king of Bashan, for his loyal love endures forever.

⁸ And what other great nation has for it* just rules and regulations just like* _⌊this whole_⌋* law that I am setting _⌊before_⌋* you _⌊today_⌋?*

¹⁸ "_⌊And then_⌋* _⌊when he is sitting_⌋* on the throne of his kingdom, then he shall write for himself a copy of this law on a scroll _⌊before_⌋* the Levitical priests. ¹⁹ And it shall be with him, and he shall read it* all the days of his life, so that he may learn to revere Yahweh your God by _⌊diligently observing_⌋* all the word of this law and these rules,

⁹ So Moses wrote this law, and he gave it to the priests, the descendants* of Levi, the ones carrying the ark of the covenant of Yahweh, and to all the elders of Israel.

⁴⁶ then he said to them, "_⌊Take to heart all the words_⌋* that I am admonishing against you _⌊today_⌋* concerning which you should instruct them with respect to your children* _⌊so that they will observe diligently_⌋* all the words of this law,

⁶ Look, I will be standing before you there on the rock in Horeb, and you will strike the rock, and water will come out from it, and the people will drink."
And Moses did so before the eyes of the elders of Israel.

¹ In the third month after the _⌊Israelites_⌋* went out from the land of Egypt, on this day they came to the Sinai desert. ² They set out from Rephidim, and they came to the desert of Sinai, and they camped in the desert, and Israel camped there in front of the mountain.

¹¹ And it happened, in the second year, in the second month, on the twentieth of the month the cloud was lifted from upon the tabernacle of the testimony.* ¹² And the _⌊Israelites_⌋* set out for their journey* from the desert of Sinai, and the cloud dwelled in the desert of Paran. ¹³ They set out _⌊for the first time_⌋* on the command of Yahweh in the hand of Moses.*

² Yahweh our God made a covenant with us at Horeb.

¹⁶ And the fourth generation shall return here, for the guilt of the Amorites _⌊is not yet complete_⌋."* ¹⁷ And after the sun had gone down and it was dusk, behold, a smoking firepot and a flaming torch passed between those half pieces. ¹⁸ On that day Yahweh _⌊made_⌋* a covenant with Abram saying, "To your offspring I will give this land, from the river of Egypt to the great river, the Euphrates river, ¹⁹ the land of the Kenites, the Kenizzites, the Kadmonites, ²⁰ the Hittites, the Perizzites, the Rephaim, ²¹ the Amorites, the Canaanites, the Girgashites, and the Jebusites."

³¹ " 'And I will set your boundary from the _⌊Red Sea_⌋* and up to the sea of the Philistines and from the desert up to the river,* because I will give the inhabitants of the land into your hand, and you will drive them out from before you.

³ Your southern edge will be from the desert of Zin toward the side of Edom, and your southern border will be from the end of the Salt Sea* to the east; ⁴ your boundary will turn from the south to the ascent of Akrabbim* and will pass over to Zin, and its limits will be from the south of Kadesh Barnea; it will continue to Hazar Addar and pass over to Azmon. ⁵ The boundary will turn from Azmon to the valley of Egypt, and its limits will be to the sea. ⁶ " 'Your western boundary will be the Great Sea;* this will be your western boundary. ⁷ Your northern border will be from the Great Sea;* you will make a boundary from the Great Sea* to Mount Hor. ⁸ From Mount Hor you will make a boundary to reach Hamath; the limits of the territory will be at Zedad. ⁹ The boundary will go out to Ziphron, and its limits will be at Hazar Enan. This will be your boundary to the north. ¹⁰ " 'You will mark out your eastern boundary from Hazar Enan to Shepham; ¹¹ the boundary will go down from Shepham to Riblah from the east side of Ain, and the boundary will go down and border on the eastern side of the Sea of Kinnereth. ¹² The boundary will go down to the Jordan, and its limits will be at the Salt Sea.* This will be your land according to its boundaries all around.'"

¹¹ But the land that you are about to cross into to take possession of it is a land of hills and valleys, and by the rain of the heaven it drinks water,

²⁴ Every place on which the sole of your foot treads, it shall be yours; your boundary shall be from the desert and Lebanon from the river, the river Euphrates, on up to the western sea.*

⁴ From the wilderness _⌊and the Lebanon_⌋,* up to the great river, the river Euphrates, all of the land of the Hittites, and up to _⌊the great sea in the west_⌋,* will be your territory.

⁴⁰ So Joshua struck all the land—the hill country, the Negev,* the Shephelah,* and the slopes*—and all their kings; he left behind no survivor, and _⌊all that breathed_⌋* he utterly destroyed as Yahweh the God of Israel commanded.

¹⁶ So Joshua took all this land: the hill country, all the Negev,* all the land of Goshen,* the Shephelah,* the Arabah,* and the hill country of Israel and its Shephelah,* ¹⁷ from Mount Halak that rises to Seir and to Baal Gad in the valley of Lebanon* _⌊at the foot of_⌋* Mount Hermon; he captured all their kings, struck them, and killed them.

¹⁵ But if it is bad in your eyes to serve Yahweh, choose for yourselves today whom you want to serve, whether it is the gods that your ancestors* served beyond the river,* or the gods of the Amorites* in whose land you are living; but as for me and my household, we will serve Yahweh."

³ Then David struck down Hadadezer the son of Rehob, king of Zobah, when he went to restore his monument* at the Euphrates River.

⁹ He also lived to the east up to the entrance of the desert _⌊this side of_⌋* the River Euphrates, for their livestock had multiplied in the land of Gilead.

³ And David struck Hadadezer, king of Zobah-Hamath, as he set up his monument at the Euphrates River.

⁹ Yet I destroyed the Amorite _⌊before them_⌋,* _⌊who was as tall as_⌋* cedars and was as strong as the oaks. I destroyed his fruit above and his roots beneath.

⁷ And Yahweh appeared to Abram and said, "To your offspring I will give this land." And he built an altar there to Yahweh, who had appeared to him.

¹⁴ And Yahweh said to Abram after Lot had separated from him, "Now, lift up your eyes and look from the place where you are to the north, and to the south, and to the east and to the west, ¹⁵ for all the land which you see I will give to you, and to your descendants, forever.

¹⁶ And the fourth generation shall return here, for the guilt of the Amorites _⌊is not yet complete_⌋."*

¹⁸ On that day Yahweh _⌊made_⌋* a covenant with Abram saying, "To your offspring I will give this land, from the river of Egypt to the great river, the Euphrates river,

⁷ And I will establish my covenant between me and you, and between your offspring after you, throughout their generations as an everlasting covenant to be as God for you and to your offspring after you. ⁸ And I will give to you and to your offspring after you _⌊the land in which you are living as an alien_⌋,* all the land of Canaan, as an everlasting property. And I will be to them as God."

¹⁶ And he said, "I swear by myself, declares Yahweh, that because you have done this thing and have not withheld your son, your only child, ¹⁷ that I will certainly bless you and greatly multiply your offspring as the stars of heaven, and as the sand that is by the shore of the sea. And your offspring will take possession of the gate of his enemies. ¹⁸ All the nations of the earth will be blessed through your offspring, because you have listened to my voice."

³ Dwell as an alien in this land, and I will be with you, and will bless you, for I will give all these lands to you and to your descendants, and I will establish the oath that I swore to Abraham you father. ⁴ And I will multiply your descendants like the stars of heaven, and I will give to your descendants all these lands. And all nations of the earth will be blessed through your offspring,

¹³ And behold, Yahweh was standing beside him,* and he said, "I am Yahweh, the God of Abraham your father, and the God of Isaac. The ground on which you were sleeping I will give to you and to your descendants. ¹⁴ Your descendants shall be like the dust of the earth, and you will spread out to the west, and to the east, and to the north and to the south. And all the families of the earth will be blessed through you and through your descendants.

¹⁸ Surely you will wear out, both you and this people who are with you, because the thing is too _⌊difficult_⌋* for you. You are not able to do it alone.

¹¹ And Moses said to Yahweh, "Why have you brought trouble to your servant? Why have I not found favor in your eyes, that the burdens of all these people have been placed on me? ¹² Did I conceive all these people? If I have fathered them,* that you could say to me, 'Carry them* in your lap, just as a foster-father carries the suckling on the land that you swore an oath to their ancestors?'* ¹³ From where do I have meat to give all these people? They weep before me, saying, 'Give us meat and let us eat!' ¹⁴ I am not able to carry all these people along alone; they are too heavy for me.

¹⁷ I will come down and speak with you there; I will take away from the spirit that is on you, and I will place it on them; and they will bear the burdens of the people with you; you will not bear it alone.

⁵ And he brought him outside and said, "Look toward the heavens and count the stars if you are able to count them." And he said to him, "So shall your offspring be."

¹⁷ that I will certainly bless you and greatly multiply your offspring as the stars of heaven, and as the sand that is by the shore of the sea. And your offspring will take possession of the gate of his enemies.

¹⁴ Your descendants shall be like the dust of the earth, and you will spread out to the west, and to the east, and to the north and to the south. And all the families of the earth will be blessed through you and through your descendants.

³⁷ And the _⌊Israelites_⌋* set out from Rameses to Succoth; the men were about six hundred thousand on foot,* besides dependents.

¹³ Remember Abraham, Isaac, and Israel, your servants, to whom you swore by yourself, and you told them, 'I will multiply your offspring like the stars of the heavens, and all this land that I promised I will give to your offspring, and they will inherit it forever.'"

⁴⁶ All of the ones counted were six hundred and three thousand, five hundred and fifty.

²² With only seventy persons your ancestors* went down to Egypt, but now Yahweh your God has made you as the stars of the heaven _⌊with respect to multitude_⌋.*

⁶² And you shall remain _⌊only a few people_⌋* in place of the fact you were formerly as the stars of heaven as far as number is concerned, because you did not listen to the voice of Yahweh your God.

²³ And David did not _⌊take a census of those twenty years old or under_⌋* because Yahweh promised* to make Israel more numerous than the stars of heaven.

²³ You made their children* numerous like the stars of the heavens and brought them to the land that you told their ancestors* to enter in order to take possession.

⁴ And I will multiply your descendants like the stars of heaven, and I will give to your descendants all these lands. And all nations of the earth will be blessed through your offspring,

²⁵ Because of the God of your father he will help you and by Shaddai* he will bless you with the blessings of heaven above, blessings of the deep that crouches beneath, blessings of the breasts and the womb.

²⁷ And they will put my name on the _⌊Israelites_⌋,* and I will bless them."

¹² God said to Balaam, "You will not go with them; you will not curse the people, because they* are blessed."

³ Then Joab said to the king, "May Yahweh your God increase the people a hundred times _⌊what they are_⌋* as the eyes of my lord the king are seeing. But my lord the king, why does he desire this thing?"

³ But Joab said, "May Yahweh add to the people a hundred times what they are! Are they not, O my lord the king, all of them the king's servants? Why does my lord seek this? Why would he bring guilt to Israel?"

¹⁴ May Yahweh give you increase, you and your children.

¹³ _⌊And_⌋* the next day, Moses sat to judge the people, and the people stood before Moses from the morning until the evening. ¹⁴ And the father-in-law of Moses saw all that he was doing for the people, and he said, "What is this thing that you are doing for the people? Why are you sitting alone and all the people are standing by you from morning until evening?" ¹⁵ And Moses said to his father-in-law, "Because the people come to me to seek God. ¹⁶ When _⌊they have an issue_⌋,* it comes to me, and I judge between a man and his neighbor, and I make known God's rule and his instructions."

¹¹ And Moses said to Yahweh, "Why have you brought trouble to your servant? Why have I not found favor in your eyes, that the burdens of all these people have been placed on me? ¹² Did I conceive all these people? If I have fathered them,* that you could say to me, 'Carry them* in your lap, just as a foster-father carries the suckling on the land that you swore an oath to their ancestors?'* ¹³ From where do I have meat to give all these people? They weep before me, saying, 'Give us meat and let us eat!' ¹⁴ I am not able to carry all these people along alone; they are too heavy for me. ¹⁵ If this is how you are going to treat me, please kill me immediately if I find favor in your eyes, and do not let me see my misery."

⁹ "And I spoke to them at that time, _⌊saying_⌋,* 'I am not able to bear you alone.

⁷ So then, O Yahweh, you are my God. You have made your servant king in place of David my father though I am a young boy. I do not know going out or coming in. ⁸ Your servant is in the middle of your people whom you have chosen; a great people who cannot be counted or numbered because of abundance. ⁹ Give to your servant a listening heart to judge your people, to discern between good and bad, because who is able to judge this, your difficult people?"

¹⁹ Formerly you spoke in a vision to your faithful ones, and said, "I have bestowed help on a mighty man; I have exalted one chosen from the people.

¹⁶ to those on the one hand an odor from death to death, and to those on the other hand a fragrance from life to life. And who is qualified for these things?

⁵ Not that we are adequate in ourselves to consider anything as from ourselves, but our adequacy is from God,

²¹ And you will select from all the people men of ability, fearers of God, trustworthy men, haters of dishonest gain,* and you will appoint such men over them as commanders of thousands, commanders of hundreds, commanders of fifties, and commanders of tens.

¹⁶ And Yahweh said to Moses, "Gather for me seventy men from the elders of Israel whom you know are elders of the people and their* officials; take them to the tent of assembly, and they will stand there with you. ¹⁷ I will come down and speak with you there; I will take away from the spirit that is on you, and I will place it on them; and they will bear the burdens of the people with you; you will not bear it alone.

²¹ Therefore it is necessary for one of the men who have accompanied us during all the time in which the Lord Jesus went in and went out among us, ²² beginning from the baptism of John until the day on which he was taken up from us—one of these men must become a witness of his resurrection together with us." ²³ And they proposed two men, Joseph called Barsabbas (who was called Justus) and Matthias.

² So the twelve summoned the community of disciples and* said, "It is not desirable that we neglect the word of God to serve tables. ³ So, brothers, select from among you seven men _⌊of good reputation_⌋,* full of the Spirit and wisdom, whom we will put in charge of this need. ⁴ But we will devote ourselves to prayer and to the ministry of the word." ⁵ And the statement pleased the whole group, and they chose Stephen (a man full of faith and of the Holy Spirit), and Philip, and Prochorus, and Nicanor, and Timon, and Parmenas, and Nicolaus (a convert from Antioch), ⁶ whom they stood before the apostles. ²⁵ And Moses chose men of ability from all Israel, and he appointed them as heads over the people, as commanders of thousands, commanders of hundreds, commanders of fifties, and commanders of tens. ²⁶ And they judged the people all the time; the difficult issues* they would bring to Moses, and every minor issue they would judge themselves.

¹⁴ But Moses was angry toward the leaders of the troops, the commanders of the thousands and the commanders of the hundreds, who came from the battle of the war.

¹⁸ "You shall appoint judges and officials for you in all your _⌊towns_⌋* that Yahweh your God is giving to you throughout your tribes, and you shall render for the people _⌊righteous judgments_⌋.*

¹² He will appoint for himself commanders of thousands and commanders of fifties, and those _⌊to do his plowing_⌋* and to reap his harvest, and those to make weapons of war and the equipment for his chariots.

¹⁸ And these ten portions of cheese you will bring to the commander of the thousand; _⌊find out how your brothers are doing_⌋,* and take their pledge."*

⁷ Then Saul said to the servants who were standing around him, "Please listen, _⌊Benjaminites_⌋!* Will the son of Jesse give you all fields and vineyards? Will he make all of you commanders of thousands and commanders of hundreds?

¹¹ And he himself gave some as apostles and some as prophets and some as evangelists and some as pastors and teachers

²¹ " 'You will not mistreat an alien, and you will not oppress him, because you were aliens in the land of Egypt.

² You will not _⌊follow_⌋* a majority* for evil, and you will not testify concerning a legal dispute to turn aside after a majority* to pervert justice. ³ You will not be partial to a powerless person* in his legal dispute.

¹⁵ " 'You* shall not do injustice in judgment; _⌊you* shall not show partiality to the powerless_⌋;* you* shall not give preference _⌊to the powerful_⌋;* you* shall judge your* fellow citizen with justice.

²² _⌊You must have_⌋* one norm; as for the alien, so* it must be for the native, because I am Yahweh your God.'"

¹⁹ Have him stand before Eleazar the priest and before the entire community, and _⌊commission him_⌋* _⌊in their sight_⌋.*

¹⁸ And he executes justice for the orphan and widow, and he is one who loves the alien, to give to them food and clothing. ¹⁹ And you shall love the alien, for you were aliens in the land of Egypt.

¹⁸ "You shall appoint judges and officials for you in all your _⌊towns_⌋* that Yahweh your God is giving to you throughout your tribes, and you shall render for the people _⌊righteous judgments_⌋.* ¹⁹ You shall not subvert* justice; you shall not _⌊show partiality_⌋;* and you shall not take a bribe, for the bribe makes blind the eyes of the wise and misrepresents the words of the righteous.

¹⁴ "You shall not exploit a hired worker, who is needy and poor, from among your fellow men or from among your aliens* who are in your land and in your _⌊towns_⌋.*

¹¹ And Moses charged the people on that day, _⌊saying_⌋,*

¹⁴ Then Yahweh said to Moses, "Look, _⌊you are about to die_⌋;* call Joshua and present yourselves in the tent of assembly,* so that I may instruct him." So Moses and Joshua went and presented themselves in* the tent of assembly.*

³ The God of Israel said to me, the rock of Israel has spoken; 'He who rules over mankind rules righteously, in the fear of God.

⁶ And he said to the judges, "Consider what you are doing, for you are not judging for a man but for Yahweh. Now he is with you in speaking justice. ⁷ So now, let the fear of Yahweh be upon you all. _⌊Be careful what you do_⌋,* for there is neither wickedness nor _⌊showing partiality_⌋* and taking bribes with Yahweh our God." ⁸ Moreover, Jehoshaphat appointed in Jerusalem some of the Levites and the priests and heads of the _⌊families_⌋* of Israel as judges and to decide legal disputes for Yahweh. And they sat* in Jerusalem. ⁹ And he commanded them, saying, "Thus you must do in the fear of Yahweh in faithfulness and with a whole heart. ¹⁰ Any legal dispute that comes before you from your brothers who live in their cities concerning bloodguilt, law, commandment, statutes, and justice, you must warn them, so that they do not incur guilt before Yahweh, and that wrath may not come upon you and your brothers. Thus you must do that you do not incur guilt.

Do you really speak what is right when silent?* Do you judge fairly the children of humankind?*

²⁴ Do not judge according to outward appearance, but judge according to righteous judgment!"

¹¹ just as you know how we treated each one of you, like a father his own children,

²¹ I testify solemnly before God and Christ Jesus and the elect angels that you observe these things without prejudice, doing nothing according to partiality.

¹⁷ Command those who are rich in this present age not to be proud and not to put their hope in the uncertainty of riches, but in God, who provides us all things richly for enjoyment,

²² And let them judge the people all the time, _⌊and_⌋* every major issue they will bring to you, and every minor issue they will judge themselves. And so lighten it for yourself, and they will bear it with you.

²⁶ And they judged the people all the time; the difficult issues* they would bring to Moses, and every minor issue they would judge themselves.

⁶ " 'You will not pervert the justice of your poor in his legal dispute. ⁷ You will stay far from a _⌊false charge_⌋,* and do not kill the innocent and the righteous, because I will not declare the wicked righteous.*

¹⁷ For Yahweh your God, he is God of the gods and Lord of the lords, the great and mighty God, the awesome one who _⌊is not partial_⌋,* and he does not take bribes.

¹⁹ You shall not subvert* justice; you shall not _⌊show partiality_⌋;* and you shall not take a bribe, for the bribe makes blind the eyes of the wise and misrepresents the words of the righteous.

⁸ "_⌊If a matter is too difficult for you_⌋,* for example disputes between blood and blood,* between legal claim and legal claim* and between assault and assault* and between matters of discernment in your _⌊towns_⌋,* then you shall get up and you shall go to the place that Yahweh your God will choose; ⁹ then you shall go to the priests and the Levites and to the judge who will be in office in those days, and you shall enquire, and they shall announce to you _⌊the verdict_⌋.* ¹⁰ "And _⌊you shall carry out exactly the decision_⌋* that they announced to you from that place that Yahweh will choose, and _⌊you shall diligently observe_⌋* according to all that they instruct you.

¹⁷ You shall not subvert the rights of an alien or an orphan, and you shall not take as pledge the garment of a widow.

³ Here I am! Testify against me before Yahweh and before his anointed one! Whose ox have I taken? Or whose donkey have I taken? Or whom have I exploited? Whom have I oppressed? Or from whose hand have I taken a bribe, that I may shut my eyes _⌊regarding_⌋* him?-then I will restore it to you." ⁴ Then they said, "You have not exploited us or oppressed us, and you have not taken anything from the hand of anyone."

⁷ But Yahweh said to Samuel, "Do not look at his appearance or at the height of his stature, because I have rejected him. For God does not see what man sees, for a man _⌊looks on the outward appearance_⌋,* but Yahweh _⌊looks on the heart_⌋."*

¹⁴ For _⌊we must certainly die_⌋,* and we are as the waters spilled to the ground which cannot be gathered. God will not take a life but devises plans for a banished person not to be cast out from him.

⁸ So she wrote letters in the name of Ahab and sealed them with his seal. She sent the letters to the elders and the nobles who were dwelling with Naboth in his city. ⁹ She had written in the letters, saying, "Call a fast and seat Naboth at the head of the people. ¹⁰ Seat two men, _⌊scoundrels_⌋,* opposite him. Let them witness against him saying, 'You cursed God and the king.' Then you shall bring him out and stone him so that he dies." ¹¹ The men of his city and the elders and nobles who were living in his city did according to what Jezebel had sent to them, as was written in the letters which she had sent to them. ¹² They called a fast, and they seated Naboth at the head of the people. ¹³ Then the two men, _⌊scoundrels_⌋,* came, sat opposite him, and the _⌊scoundrels_⌋* witnessed against Naboth before the people, saying, "Naboth cursed God and the king," so they brought him outside of the city and stoned him with stones, and he died. ¹⁴ They sent to Jezebel saying, "Naboth has been stoned, and he is dead."

⁶ And he said to the judges, "Consider what you are doing, for you are not judging for a man but for Yahweh. Now he is with you in speaking justice.

⁶ "Indeed, you have required a pledge from your family for nothing, and you have stripped off the clothes of the naked. ⁷ You have given no water for the weary to drink, and you withheld food from the hungry. ⁸ And the land _⌊belongs to the man of power_⌋,* and _⌊the favored_⌋* lives in it. ⁹ You have sent widows away empty-handed, and the arms of orphans were crushed.

¹¹ "When the ear heard and commended me, and the eye saw and testified in support of me ¹² because I saved the needy who cried for help, and I saved* the orphan for whom there was no helper. ¹³ The blessing of the wretched came upon me, and I caused the widow's heart to sing for joy. ¹⁴ I put on righteousness, and it clothed me; my justice was like a robe and a headband. ¹⁵ "I was eyes to the blind, and I was feet to the lame. ¹⁶ I was a father to the poor, and I investigated _⌊the stranger's_⌋* legal dispute. ¹⁷ And I broke the evil one's jaw bones, and I made his prey drop from his teeth.

¹³ "If I have rejected my male or* female slave's case when their complaint was against me, ¹⁴ then* what shall I do when God rises up? And when he enquires, how shall I answer him? ¹⁵ Did not he who made me in the womb make them? And did not one fashion us in the womb? ¹⁶ "If I have withheld the desire of the poor from them, or* I have caused the widow's eyes to fail,

³⁴ because I dreaded the great multitude, and the contempt of clans terrified me, so that I kept quiet, I did not go out of the doorway?

³ Judge on behalf of the helpless and the orphan; provide justice to the afflicted and the poor. ⁴ Rescue the helpless and the needy; deliver them from the hand of the wicked."

²² Do not rob the poor because he is poor, and do not crush the afflicted at the gate; ²³ For Yahweh will plead their case and despoil those who despoil them of life.*

²³ These sayings are also for the wise: _⌊Partiality_⌋* in judgment is not good.

²⁵ The fear of a person will lay a snare, but he who trusts in Yahweh will be secure.

¹⁷ But you, you must gird your loins, and stand, and speak to them all that I command you. _⌊Do not be afraid of them_⌋,* or I will shatter you _⌊before_⌋* them.

²⁸ They have grown fat, they have grown sleek, also, _⌊their evil deeds have no limit_⌋.* They do not judge with justice, the legal cause of the orphan, or allow it to succeed, and the legal case of the poor, they do not defend. ²⁹ Because of these things shall I not punish?" _⌊declares_⌋* Yahweh, "and on a nation who is like this, shall I not take revenge?

¹¹ Therefore, because you trample on the poor and you take a grain tax from them, you built houses of dressed stone, but you will not live in them. You built vineyards of delightfulness, but you will not drink their wine. ¹² For I know your transgressions are many and your sins are numerous, you foes of the righteous, those who take a bribe, and _⌊those who_⌋* push aside the poor ones in the gate!

¹ Woe to those who plan wickedness and evil deeds upon their beds! In the light of the morning they did it, because they have power in their hands. ² They covet fields and seize them, and houses, and they take them away. They oppress a man and his house; a man and his inheritance. ³ Therefore, thus says Yahweh: Look! I am planning disaster against this family from which you will not be able to remove your necks. You will not walk proudly, for it is a time of disaster.

¹ And I said, "Listen, O heads of Jacob and leaders of the house of Israel! Is it not for you to know justice? ² Those of you who are haters of good and lovers of evil, who tear their skin from them and their flesh from their bones, ³ and who eat the flesh of my people, and strip their skin from them, and break their bones, and chop them like meat in the pot, and like flesh in the midst of a cooking pot." ⁴ Then they will cry to Yahweh, but he will not answer them. He will hide his face from them at that time, when they have made their deeds evil.

³ Their hands are upon evil, to do it well; the official and the judge ask for the bribe, and the great man utters the evil desire of his soul; and they weave it together. ⁴ The best of them is like a brier; the most upright worse than a thorn hedge. The day of your watchman, your punishment, has come; now their confusion will come.

¹⁶ And they sent their disciples to him with the Herodians, saying, "Teacher, we know that you are truthful and teach the way of God in truth, and _⌊you do not care what anyone thinks_⌋,* _⌊because you do not regard the opinion of people_⌋.*

¹⁴ And when they* came, they said to him, "Teacher, we know that you are truthful and _⌊you do not care what anyone thinks_⌋,* _⌊because you do not regard the opinion of people_⌋* but teach the way of God in truth. Is it permitted to pay taxes to Caesar or not? Should we pay or should we not pay?"

²¹ And they asked him, saying, "Teacher, we know that you speak and teach rightly, and do not _⌊show partiality_⌋,* but teach the way of God in truth.

³⁴ So Peter opened his* mouth and* said, "In truth I understand that God is not one who shows partiality, ³⁵ but in every nation the one who fears him and who does what is right is acceptable to him.

¹¹ For there is no partiality with God.

⁹ And masters, do the same things to them, giving up threats, knowing that both their Lord and yours is in heaven, and there is no partiality with him.

²⁵ For the one who does wrong will receive back whatever wrong he has done, and there is no partiality.

⁴ but just as we have been approved by God to be entrusted with the gospel, thus we speak, not as pleasing people but God, who examines our hearts.

¹ My brothers, do not hold your faith in our glorious Lord Jesus Christ with partiality. ² For if someone* enters into your assembly* in fine clothing with a gold ring on his finger, and a poor person in filthy clothing also enters, ³ and you look favorably on the one wearing the fine clothing and you say, "Be seated here in a good place," and to the poor person you say, "You stand or be seated there* by my footstool," ⁴ have you not made distinctions among yourselves and become judges with evil thoughts? ⁵ Listen, my dear brothers! Did not God choose the poor of the world to be rich in faith, and heirs of the kingdom that he has promised to those who love him?

⁹ But if you show partiality, you commit sin, and thus* are convicted by the law as transgressors.

¹⁷ And if you call on him as Father who judges impartially according to each one's work, conduct yourselves with fear during the time of your temporary residence,

⁵ See, I now teach* you rules and regulations just as Yahweh my God has commanded me, to observe them just so in the midst of the land where you are going, to take possession of it.

⁴⁰ And you shall keep his rules and his commandments that I am commanding you _⌊today_⌋,* so that _⌊it may go well_⌋* for you and for your children* after you, and so that _⌊you may remain a long time_⌋* on the land that Yahweh your God is giving to you during all of those days."

²⁸ _⌊Be careful to obey_⌋* all these things that I am commanding you, so that _⌊it will go well_⌋* for you and for your children after you _⌊forever_⌋,* because then you will be doing what is* good and right* in the eyes of Yahweh your God.

³² * All of the things* that I am commanding you, _⌊you must diligently observe_⌋;* you shall not add to it, and you shall not take away from it."

²⁰ teaching them to observe everything I have commanded you, and behold, I am with you all the days until the end of the age."

²⁰ how I did not shrink from proclaiming to you anything that would be profitable, and from teaching you in public and from house to house,

²⁷ for I did not shrink from proclaiming to you the whole purpose of God.

¹⁵ the one leading you in the great and terrible desert infested with _⌊dangerous_⌋* snakes* and scorpions* and parched ground, where there is* no water, and the one bringing out water for you from flint rock,

¹⁰ He found him in a desert land, and in a howling, desert wasteland; he _⌊encircled him_⌋,* he cared for him, he protected him like the _⌊apple_⌋* of his eye.

⁶ And they did not say, 'Where is Yahweh, the one who brought us up from the land of Egypt, the one who led us in the desert,* in a land of desert plains and gorges,* in a land of dryness and deep darkness, in a land _⌊that no one passes through_⌋,* and no human lives there?'

⁷ Turn now and _⌊move on_⌋,* and go into the hill of the Amorites* and to all of the neighboring regions* in the Jordan _⌊Valley_⌋* in the hill country and in the Negev and in the coastal area along the sea, into the land of the Canaanites* and into the Lebanon, as far as the great river Euphrates. ⁸ Look, I have set the land _⌊before you_⌋;* go and take possession of the land that Yahweh swore to your ancestors,* to Abraham, to Isaac, and to Jacob, to give it to them and to their offspring after them.'

³⁰ And Caleb silenced the people before Moses and said, "Surely, let us go up and let us take possession of it because surely we will be able to prevail over it."

⁸ If Yahweh delights in us, then he will bring us into this land, and he will give it to us, a land that is flowing with milk and honey. ⁹ Only do not rebel against Yahweh, and you will not fear the people of the land, because they will be our food. _⌊Their protection_⌋* has been turned from them; Yahweh is with us. You should not fear them."

¹ "If you go out to war against your enemies and you see a horse and a chariot, _⌊an army_⌋* larger that you, you shall not be afraid because of them; for Yahweh your God is with you, the one who brought you from the land of Egypt.

⁶ Be strong and courageous, for you will give the people this land as an inheritance that I swore to their ancestors* to give them.

⁹ Did I not command you? Be strong and courageous! Do not fear or be dismayed, for Yahweh your God is with you _⌊wherever you go_⌋."*

³² "Do not be afraid, little flock, because your Father is well pleased to give you the kingdom.

⁶ So then, we can say with confidence,
"The Lord is my helper, I will not be afraid.* What will man do to me?"*

¹ And Yahweh spoke to Moses, saying, ² "Send for yourself men, and let them explore the land of Canaan, which I am about to give to the _⌊Israelites_⌋;* _⌊from each tribe of his father send one man_⌋,* everyone a leader among them." ³ So Moses sent them from the desert of Paran on the command of Yahweh; all of the men were _⌊leaders_⌋* of the _⌊Israelites_⌋.* ⁴ And these are their names: from the tribe of Reuben, Shammua son of Zaccur; ⁵ from the tribe of Simeon, Shaphat son of Hori; ⁶ from the tribe of Judah, Caleb son of Jephunneh; ⁷ from the tribe of Issachar, Igal son of Joseph; ⁸ from the tribe of Ephraim, Hoshea son of Nun; ⁹ from the tribe of Benjamin, Palti son of Raphu; ¹⁰ from the tribe of Zebulun, Gaddiel son of Sodi; ¹¹ from the tribe of Joseph, from the tribe of Manasseh, Gaddi son of Susi; ¹² from the tribe of Dan, Ammiel son of Gemalli; ¹³ from the tribe of Asher, Sethur son of Michael; ¹⁴ from the tribe of Naphtali, Nahbi son of Vophsi; ¹⁵ from the tribe of Gad, Geuel son of Maki. ¹⁶ These are the names of the men whom Moses sent to explore the land. And Moses called Hoshea son of Nun Joshua. ¹⁷ Moses sent them to explore the land of Canaan, and he said to them, "Go up like this to the Negev,* and go up into the hill country, ¹⁸ and you will see what the land is like and if the people who inhabit it are strong or weak, or whether they are few or many, ¹⁹ and whether the land that they are inhabiting is good or bad, and whether the cities they are inhabiting are camps or fortifications, ²⁰ and whether the land is fertile or lean, and whether there are trees on it or not. You will show yourself courageous, and you will take some of the fruit of the land." It was the time of first ripe grapes.

(Hebron was built seven years before Zoan in Egypt.) ²³ And they came up to the valley* of Eshcol, and they cut off a vine branch and one cluster of grapes from there; they carried it on a pole between two men, with pomegranates and figs. ²⁴ That place he called the valley* of Eshcol on account of the cluster of grapes that the _⌊Israelites_⌋* cut off from there. ²⁵ They returned from exploring the land at the end of forty days.* ²⁶ And they came* to Moses and Aaron and to the entire community of the _⌊Israelites_⌋* in the desert of Paran at Kadesh; they brought back word to them and to all the community, and they showed them the fruit of the land. ²⁷ And they told him,* "We came to the land that you sent us, and it is flowing of milk and honey; this is its fruit. ²⁸ Yet the people who are inhabiting it are strong and the cities are fortified and very large; moreover, we saw the descendants of the Anakites there. ²⁹ The Amalekites are living in the land of the Negev;* the Hittites, Jebusites, and the Amorites are living in the hill country; and the Canaanites are living at the sea and on the banks of the Jordan." ³⁰ And Caleb silenced the people before Moses and said, "Surely, let us go up and let us take possession of it because surely we will be able to prevail over it." ³¹ And the men who went up with him said, "We are not able to go up to the people because they are stronger than us." ³² And they presented the report of the land that they explored to the _⌊Israelites_⌋,* saying, "The land that we went through to explore is a land that eats its inhabitants, and all the people whom we saw in its midst are _⌊men of great size_⌋.* ³³ There we saw the Nephilim (the descendants* of Anak came from the Nephilim), and we were like grasshoppers in our own sight, and so we were in their eyes."

¹ Then Joshua son of Nun secretly sent two men from Acacia Grove* as spies, saying, "Go, view the land, especially Jericho." So they went, and entered the house of a prostitute whose name was Rahab, and _⌊spent the night_⌋* there. ² The king of Jericho was told, "Look, some men from the _⌊Israelites_⌋* have come here tonight to search out the land."

¹ Then all the community _⌊lifted up their voices_⌋,* and the people wept during that night. ² And all the _⌊Israelites_⌋* grumbled against Moses and Aaron, and all the community said to them, "If only we had died in the land of Egypt or in this desert! ³ Why did Yahweh bring us into this land to fall by the sword? Our wives and our little children will become plunder; would it not be better for us to return to Egypt?" ⁴ _⌊They said to each other_⌋,* "Let us appoint a leader, and we will return to Egypt."

²⁴ Then they refused the desirable land; they did not believe his word, ²⁵ but grumbled in their tents. They did not obey the voice of Yahweh.

¹⁰ But* they _⌊were the ones who_⌋* rebelled, and they grieved _⌊his Holy Spirit_⌋,* so* he _⌊became an enemy to them_⌋;* he himself fought against them.

⁵¹ "You stiff-necked people and uncircumcised in hearts and in your* ears! You constantly resist the Holy Spirit! As your fathers did, so also do you!

³ And the _⌊Israelites_⌋* said to them, "_⌊If only we had died_⌋* by the hand of Yahweh in the land of Egypt, when we sat by the pots* of meat, when we ate bread _⌊until we were full_⌋,* because you have brought us out to this desert to kill all of this assembly with hunger."

⁸ And Moses said, "When in the evening Yahweh gives you meat to eat and bread in the morning _⌊to fill up on_⌋,* _⌊for he hears_⌋* your grumblings that you grumble against him—and what are we? Your grumblings are not against us but against Yahweh."

³ Why did Yahweh bring us into this land to fall by the sword? Our wives and our little children will become plunder; would it not be better for us to return to Egypt?"

⁵ The people spoke against God and against Moses, "Why have you brought us from Egypt to die in the desert? There is no food and no water, and our hearts detest this miserable food."

²⁸ lest the people of the land from which you brought us out from there say, "Because Yahweh was not able to bring them to the land that he _⌊promised_⌋* to them and because of his hatred toward them, he has brought them out to kill them in the desert."

²⁵ but grumbled in their tents. They did not obey the voice of Yahweh.

²⁴ And the one who had received the one talent came up also and* said, 'Master, because I* knew you, that you are a hard man, reaping where you did not sow and gathering from where you did not scatter seed.*

²¹ For I was afraid of you, because you are a severe man—you withdraw what you did not deposit, and you reap what you did not sow!'

¹⁵ Then the chiefs of Edom were horrified; great distress seized the leaders of Moab; all of the inhabitants of Canaan melted away.

¹ "Hear, Israel, you are about to cross the Jordan today to go to dispossess nations larger and more numerous than you, great cities fortified _⌊with high walls_⌋,* ² a great and tall people, the sons of the Anakites, whom you know and of whom you have heard it said, 'Who could stand before the sons of Anak?'

⁸ And the officials shall continue to speak to the troops, and they shall say, '_⌊What man_⌋* is afraid _⌊and disheartened_⌋?* Let him go, and let him return to his house, and let him not cause the heart of his brothers to melt* like his.'

⁹ and said to the men, "I know that Yahweh has given you the land, and that dread of you has fallen on us, and that all the inhabitants of the land melt away in fear because of your presence.

¹¹ We heard this, and our hearts* melted, and _⌊no courage was left in anyone_⌋* because of your presence. For Yahweh your God is God in the heavens above and on the earth below.

²⁴ They said to Joshua, "Surely Yahweh has given all the land into our hand; also, all the inhabitants of the land melt away in fear because of our presence."

²² None of the Anakites were left in the land of the _⌊Israelites_⌋;* some remained only in Gaza, Gath, and Ashdod.

⁸ My companions who went up with me made the hearts* of the people melt, but I remained true to Yahweh my God.

¹⁴ Caleb drove out from there three of Anak's sons, Sheshai, Ahiman, and Talmai, the descendants* of Anak.

¹⁰ And Judah went against the Canaanites* living in Hebron (the former name of Hebron was Kiriath Arba). And they defeated Sheshai, Ahiman, and Talmai.

²⁰ They gave Hebron to Caleb just as Moses said, and he drove out the three sons of Anak from there.

¹⁶ Now Yishbi in Nob, who was among the descendents of Raphah* (now the weight of his spearhead was three hundredweight of bronze, and he was newly armed), said that he would kill David. ¹⁷ But Abishai the son of Zeruiah helped him, and he attacked the Philistine and killed him. Then the men of David swore to him, saying, "You shall not go out with us any longer to the battle, so that you do not quench the lamp of Israel." ¹⁸ It happened afterward that there was again battle at Gob with the Philistines. Then Sibbecai the Hushathite killed Saph who was among the descendants of the Raphah. ¹⁹ There was again a battle with the Philistines at Gob. And Elhanan the son of Jaare-Oregim, the Bethlehemite, killed Goliath* the Gittite, the shaft of whose spear was like the beam of a weaver. ²⁰ Once again there was battle at Gath, and there was _⌊a man of great size_⌋.* The fingers of his hand and the toes of his feet were six and six, twenty-four in number. He was also born to the Raphah. ²¹ He taunted Israel but Jonathan the son of Shimei, the brother of David, killed him. ²² These four were born for the Raphah in Gath, and they fell by the hand of David and by the hand of his servants.

⁷ Therefore all hands will grow slack, and every human heart will melt,

⁷ _⌊And then_⌋* when they say to you, 'On account of what are you groaning?' then you must say, 'On account of the report, for it is coming, and every heart will be weak and all hands will hang limp and every spirit will be disheartened, and all knees will go like water.' Look! It is coming, and it will happen!" _⌊declares_⌋* the Lord Yahweh.

¹ And Yahweh said to Moses, "See, I have made you as a god to Pharaoh, and Aaron your brother will be your prophet. ² You will speak all that I will command you, and Aaron your brother will speak to Pharaoh, and he will release the _⌊Israelites_⌋* from his land. ³ And I myself will harden the heart of Pharaoh, and I will make my signs and my wonders numerous in the land of Egypt. ⁴ And Pharaoh will not listen to you, and I will put my hand into Egypt and bring out my divisions, my people, the _⌊Israelites_⌋,* from the land of Egypt with great punishments. ⁵ And the Egyptians will know that I am Yahweh when I stretch out my hand over Egypt and bring the _⌊Israelites_⌋* out from their midst." ⁶ And Moses and Aaron did it; as Yahweh commanded them, so they did. ⁷ (And Moses was _⌊eighty years old_⌋,* and Aaron was _⌊eighty-three years old_⌋* when they spoke to Pharaoh.) ⁸ And Yahweh said to Moses and to Aaron, saying, ⁹ "When Pharaoh speaks to you, saying, 'Do a wonder for yourselves,' you will say to Aaron, 'Take your staff and throw it before Pharaoh, and it will become a snake.'" ¹⁰ And Moses and Aaron came to Pharaoh, and they did so, as Yahweh had commanded. And Aaron threw his staff before Pharaoh and before his servants, and it became a snake. ¹¹ And Pharaoh also called the wise men and the sorcerers, and they also, the magicians of Egypt, did likewise with their secret arts. ¹² Each threw down his staff, and they became snakes, and Aaron's staff swallowed up their staffs. ¹³ And Pharaoh's heart was hard, and he did not listen to them, as Yahweh had said. ¹⁴ And Yahweh said to Moses, "Pharaoh's heart is _⌊insensitive_⌋;* he refuses to release the people. ¹⁵ Go to Pharaoh in the morning. Look, he is going out to the water, and you must wait to meet him on the bank of the Nile, and you must take in your hand the staff that was changed into a snake. ¹⁶ And you must say to him, 'Yahweh, the God of the Hebrews, has sent me to you, saying, "Release my people that they may serve me in the desert, and, look, you have not listened until now." ¹⁷ Thus says Yahweh, "By this you will know that I am Yahweh. Look, I am about to strike with the staff that is in my hand the water that is in the Nile, and it will be changed to blood. ¹⁸ And the fish that are in the Nile will die, and the Nile will stink, and the Egyptians will be unable to drink water from the Nile." '" ¹⁹ And Yahweh said to Moses, "Say to Aaron, 'Take your staff and stretch your hand out over the waters of Egypt and over their rivers, over their canals, and over their pools and over all of their reservoirs of water, so that they become blood,' and blood will be in all the land of Egypt and in vessels of wood and of stone." ²⁰ And Moses and Aaron did so, as Yahweh had commanded, and he raised the staff and struck the water that was in the Nile before the eyes of Pharaoh and before the eyes of his servants, and all of the water that was in the Nile was changed to blood. ²¹ And the fish that were in the Nile died, and the Nile stank, and the Egyptians were not able to drink water from the Nile, and the blood was in all the land of Egypt. ²² And the magicians of Egypt did likewise with their secret arts, and Pharaoh's heart was hard, and he did not listen to them, as Yahweh had spoken. ²³ And Pharaoh turned and went to his house, and _⌊he did not take also this to heart_⌋.* ²⁴ And all of the Egyptians dug around the Nile for water to drink, because they were unable to drink from the water of the Nile. ²⁵ And seven days passed after Yahweh struck the Nile.

¹⁴ Yahweh will fight for you, and you must be quiet."

²⁵ And he removed* the wheels of their chariots so that they drove them with difficulty, and the Egyptians said, "We must flee away* from Israel because Yahweh is fighting for them against Egypt."

¹ Then Moses and the _⌊Israelites_⌋* sang this song to Yahweh, _⌊and they said_⌋,*
"Let me sing to Yahweh because he is highly exalted; the horse and its rider he hurled into the sea. ² Yah* is my strength and song, and he has become my salvation;* this is my God, and I will praise him—the God of my father—and I will exalt him. ³ Yahweh is a man of war; Yahweh is his name. ⁴ The chariots of Pharaoh and his army he cast into the sea, and his choice adjutants were sunk in the _⌊Red Sea_⌋.* ⁵ The deep waters covered them; they went down into the depths like a stone. ⁶ Yahweh, your right hand is glorious in power; Yahweh, your right hand destroyed the enemy. ⁷ And in the greatness of your majesty you overthrew those standing up to you; you released your fierce anger, and it consumed them like stubble. ⁸ And by the breath of your nostrils waters were piled up; waves stood like a heap; deep waters in the middle of the sea congealed. ⁹ The enemy said, 'I will pursue, I will overtake, I will divide plunder, my desire will be full of them, I will draw my sword, my hand will destroy them.' ¹⁰ You blew with your breath; the sea covered them; they dropped like lead in the mighty waters. ¹¹ Who is like you among the gods, Yahweh? Who is like you—glorious in holiness, awesome in praiseworthy actions, doing wonders?* ¹² You stretched out your right hand; the earth swallowed them. ¹³ In your loyal love you led the people whom you redeemed; in your strength you guided them to the abode of your holiness.* ¹⁴ Peoples heard; they trembled; anguish seized the inhabitants of Philistia. ¹⁵ Then the chiefs of Edom were horrified; great distress seized the leaders of Moab; all of the inhabitants of Canaan melted away. ¹⁶ Terror and dread fell on them; at the greatness of your arm they became silent like the stone, until your people passed by, Yahweh, until the people whom you bought passed by. ¹⁷ You brought them and planted them on the mountain of your inheritance, a place you made for yourself to inhabit, Yahweh, a sanctuary, Lord, that your hands established. ¹⁸ Yahweh will reign as king forever and ever." ¹⁹ When the horses* of Pharaoh came into the sea with his chariots* and with his charioteers, Yahweh brought back upon them the waters of the sea, and the _⌊Israelites_⌋* traveled on dry ground through the middle of the sea. ²⁰ And Miriam the prophetess, the sister of Aaron, took her* tambourine in her hand, and all of the women went out after her with tambourines and with dances. ²¹ And Miriam answered,* "Sing to Yahweh because he is highly exalted; the horse and its rider he hurled into the sea." ²² And Moses caused Israel to set out from the _⌊Red Sea_⌋,* and they went out into the desert of Shur, and they traveled three days in the desert, and they did not find water. ²³ And they came to Marah, and they were not able to drink water from Marah because it was bitter. Therefore _⌊it was named_⌋* Marah. ²⁴ And the people grumbled against Moses, saying, "What shall we drink?" ²⁵ And he cried out to Yahweh, and Yahweh showed him a piece of wood, and he threw it into the water, and the water became sweet. There he made a rule and regulation for them, and there he tested them. ²⁶ And he said, "If you carefully listen to the voice of Yahweh your God and you do what is right in his eyes and give heed to his commands and you keep all his rules, then I will not bring about on you any of the diseases* that I brought about on Egypt, because I am Yahweh your healer. ²⁷ And they came to Elim, and twelve springs of water and seventy palm trees were there, and they encamped there at the water.

²² You shall not fear them, for Yahweh your God is the one fighting for you.

¹ "If you go out to war against your enemies and you see a horse and a chariot, _⌊an army_⌋* larger that you, you shall not be afraid because of them; for Yahweh your God is with you, the one who brought you from the land of Egypt. ² _⌊And then_⌋* when you approach the battle, then the priest shall come near and speak to the troops. ³ And he shall say to them, 'Hear, Israel, you are near _⌊today_⌋* to the battle against your enemies; _⌊do not lose heart_⌋;* you shall not be afraid, and you shall not panic, and you shall not be terrified _⌊because of them_⌋,* ⁴ for Yahweh your God is going with you to fight for you against your enemies to help you.'

⁴² all of these kings and their land Joshua captured at one time, because Yahweh the God of Israel fought for Israel.

⁴⁵ Then David said to the Philistine, "You are coming to me with a sword and with a spear and with a javelin, but I am coming to you in the name of Yahweh of hosts, the God of the battle lines of Israel, whom you have defied! ⁴⁶ This day Yahweh will deliver you into my hand, and I will strike you down _⌊and cut off your head_⌋!* Then I will give the corpses of the army of the Philistines this day to the birds of heaven and to the animals of the earth, so that all the earth may know that there is a God who is for Israel.

¹¹ Then Asa cried out to Yahweh his God. And he said, "O Yahweh, there is none with you to help between the great and the powerless. Help us, O Yahweh our God, for we rely upon you, and in your name we have come against this multitude. O Yahweh, you are our God! Let no man prevail against you!" ¹² So Yahweh defeated the Cushites before Asa and before Judah, and the Cushites fled.

⁸ With him is the arm of flesh, and with us is Yahweh our God, to help us and to fight our battles." And the people took confidence with the words of Hezekiah, king of Judah.

²⁰ Wherever you hear the sound of the trumpet, come together to us there. Our God will fight for us."

¹¹ They also forgot his deeds, and his wonders that he had shown them. ¹² In front of their ancestors* he did a wonder, in the land of Egypt, in the region of Zoan. ¹³ He split the sea and caused them to go over, and he caused waters to stand like a heap.

⁴³ how he performed* his signs in Egypt and his wonders in the region of Zoan, ⁴⁴ when he turned their rivers* to blood so they could not drink from their streams. ⁴⁵ He sent among them flies that devoured them and frogs that destroyed them. ⁴⁶ And he gave their crop to the locusts and their labor to the locust.* ⁴⁷ He destroyed their vines with hail and their sycamore trees with sleet.* ⁴⁸ He also handed their cattle over to the hail and their livestock to the lightning bolts. ⁴⁹ He sent against them his fierce anger, rage and indignation and trouble, a band of _⌊destroying_⌋* angels. ⁵⁰ He cleared a path for his anger. He did not spare them* from death but handed their life over to the plague. ⁵¹ And he struck down all the firstborn in Egypt, the first of their virility in the tents of Ham.

²⁷ They set before them the words concerning his signs and portents in the land of Ham. ²⁸ He sent darkness and made it dark, and they did not rebel against his words. ²⁹ He turned their waters into blood and it killed their fish. ³⁰ Their land swarmed with frogs, even in the chambers of their kings. ³¹ He spoke, and there came flies and gnats throughout all their territory.* ³² He gave hail for their rains and the fire of lightning in their land. ³³ And he struck their vines and fig trees, and shattered the trees of their territory. ³⁴ He spoke and there came locusts and young locusts without number. ³⁵ And they ate up all the vegetation in their land, and they ate up the fruit of their ground. ³⁶ And he struck down all the firstborn in their land, the first of all their virility.

⁹ Be broken, you peoples, and be dismayed. And listen, all distant parts of the earth; gird yourselves and be dismayed; gird yourselves and be dismayed! ¹⁰ _⌊Make a plan_⌋,* but it will be frustrated! Speak a word, but it will not stand, for God is with us!

³¹ What then shall we say about these things? If God is for us, who can be against us?

³⁷ No, but in all these things we prevail completely through the one who loved us.

¹ And they set out from Elim, and all the community of the _⌊Israelites_⌋* came to the desert of Sin, which is between Elim _⌊and Sinai_⌋,* in the fifteenth day of the second month of their going out from the land of Egypt. ² And all the community of the _⌊Israelites_⌋* grumbled against Moses and against Aaron in the desert. ³ And the _⌊Israelites_⌋* said to them, "_⌊If only we had died_⌋* by the hand of Yahweh in the land of Egypt, when we sat by the pots* of meat, when we ate bread _⌊until we were full_⌋,* because you have brought us out to this desert to kill all of this assembly with hunger." ⁴ And Yahweh said to Moses, "Look, I am going to rain down for you bread from the heavens, and the people will go out and gather enough for the day on its day; in that way I will test them: Will they go according to my law or not? ⁵ And then on the sixth day, they will prepare what they bring, and it will be twice over what they will gather every other day." ⁶ And Moses and Aaron said to all the _⌊Israelites_⌋,* "In the evening, you will know that Yahweh has brought you out from the land of Egypt, ⁷ and in the morning, you will see the glory of Yahweh, _⌊for he hears_⌋* your grumblings against Yahweh, and what are we that you grumble against us?" ⁸ And Moses said, "When in the evening Yahweh gives you meat to eat and bread in the morning _⌊to fill up on_⌋,* _⌊for he hears_⌋* your grumblings that you grumble against him—and what are we? Your grumblings are not against us but against Yahweh." ⁹ And Moses said to Aaron, "Say to all the community of the _⌊Israelites_⌋,* 'Come near before Yahweh because he has heard your grumblings.'" ¹⁰ And at the moment of Aaron's speaking to all the community of the _⌊Israelites_⌋,* they turned to the desert, _⌊and just then_⌋* the glory of Yahweh appeared in the cloud. ¹¹ And Yahweh spoke to Moses, saying, ¹² "I have heard the grumblings of the _⌊Israelites_⌋.* Speak to them, saying, '_⌊At twilight_⌋* you will eat meat, and in the morning you will be full with bread, and you will know that I am Yahweh your God.'" ¹³ And so it was, in the evening, the quail came up and covered the camp, and in the morning, a layer of dew was all around the camp. ¹⁴ And the layer of dew came up, _⌊and there_⌋* on the face of the desert was a fine granular substance, fine like frost on the ground. ¹⁵ And the _⌊Israelites_⌋* saw, and they said _⌊to each other_⌋,* "What is this?" because they did not know what it was. And Moses said to them, "That is the bread that Yahweh has given to you as food. ¹⁶ This is the word that Yahweh commanded, 'Gather from it, _⌊each according to what he can eat_⌋,* an omer per person* according to the number of you.* You each shall take enough for whoever is in his tent.'" ¹⁷ And the _⌊Israelites_⌋* did so, and they gathered, some more and some less.

⁴ 'You yourselves have seen what I did to Egypt and how I bore you on eagles' wings and I brought you to me.

¹¹ And Moses said to Yahweh, "Why have you brought trouble to your servant? Why have I not found favor in your eyes, that the burdens of all these people have been placed on me? ¹² Did I conceive all these people? If I have fathered them,* that you could say to me, 'Carry them* in your lap, just as a foster-father carries the suckling on the land that you swore an oath to their ancestors?'*

¹⁴ I am not able to carry all these people along alone; they are too heavy for me.

¹⁰ He found him in a desert land, and in a howling, desert wasteland; he _⌊encircled him_⌋,* he cared for him, he protected him like the _⌊apple_⌋* of his eye. ¹¹ As an eagle stirs up its nest, hovers over its young, spreads out its wings, takes them,* carries them* on its pinions,* ¹² so Yahweh alone guided him,* and _⌊there was no foreign god accompanying him_⌋.*

¹² You led them by day with a column of cloud and with a column of fire by night, to give them light on the way that they were to go. ¹³ Then you came down on Mount Sinai and spoke with them from heaven and gave them right judgments and true teachings, good regulations and commandments. ¹⁴ You made known your holy Sabbath to them and gave them commandments, regulations, and law* by the hand of your servant Moses. ¹⁵ You gave them bread from heaven for their starvation, and you caused water to go out from a rock for their thirst. You told them to go in order to take into possession the land that you have sworn by your hand to give to them. ¹⁶ "But they and our ancestors* acted arrogantly and stiffened their neck and did not listen to your commandments. ¹⁷ They refused to listen and did not remember your wonders that you did among them. They stiffened their neck and in their rebellion _⌊determined_⌋* to return to their slavery. But you are a God of forgiveness, gracious and compassionate, _⌊slow to anger_⌋,* abundant in loyal love, so you did not abandon them. ¹⁸ Even when they made for themselves a molten idol of a calf and said, 'This is your God who brought you out from Egypt,' and committed great blasphemies. ¹⁹ But you in your many mercies did not abandon them in the desert. The column of cloud that was over them in the day did not cease to leave them on the way, and the column of fire by night that gave light to them on the way that they went. ²⁰ And you gave your good Spirit to instruct them and did not withhold your manna from their mouth and gave them water for their thirst. ²¹ Forty years you sustained them in the desert—they were not in need. Their clothing did not wear out and their feet did not swell. ²² And you gave them kingdoms and nations and allotted them a portion. They took into possession the land of Sihon king of Heshbon and the land of Og king of Bashan. ²³ You made their children* numerous like the stars of the heavens and brought them to the land that you told their ancestors* to enter in order to take possession.

¹⁴ And he led them with the cloud by day, and all night with a fiery light. ¹⁵ He caused rocks to split in the wilderness and provided drink abundantly as from the depths. ¹⁶ And he brought streams out of the rock and caused water to flow down like rivers. ¹⁷ But they sinned still further against him by rebelling against the Most High in the desert. ¹⁸ And they tested God in their heart by asking food _⌊for their craving_⌋.* ¹⁹ And they spoke against God. They said, "Is God able to prepare a table in the wilderness? ²⁰ Yes, he struck the rock and water flowed and streams gushed out, but can he also give food or provide meat for his people?" ²¹ Therefore Yahweh heard and he was very angry, and a fire was kindled against Jacob, and his anger also rose up against Israel, ²² because they did not believe God, and they did not trust his salvation. ²³ Nevertheless, he commanded the skies above and opened the doors of heaven, ²⁴ and rained down on them manna to eat and gave them the grain of heaven. ²⁵ Humankind ate the bread of _⌊angels_⌋.* He sent them food enough to be satisfied. ²⁶ He caused the east wind to blow in the heavens and drove along the south wind by his strength. ²⁷ Then he rained meat on them like dust, even winged birds* like the sand of the seas. ²⁸ He caused them to fall in the midst of his camp, all around his dwellings.

³⁹ He spread out a cloud for a covering, and fire to give light at night. ⁴⁰ They* asked, and he brought quail, and satisfied them with the bread of heaven. ⁴¹ He opened the rock and waters flowed; they coursed* through the dry places like a river.

¹¹ He will feed his flock like a shepherd; he will gather the lambs in his arm, and he will carry them in his bosom; he will lead those who nurse.

³ "Listen to me, house of Jacob, and all the remnant of the house of Israel who have been carried from the belly, who have been carried from the womb: ⁴ Even* to your old age I am he; even* to your advanced age I myself will support you. I myself have made you, and I myself will carry you, and I myself will support you, and I will save you.

⁹ In all their distress, _⌊there was no distress_⌋,* and the messenger of his _⌊presence_⌋* saved them, in his love and compassion he himself redeemed them, and he lifted them up, and he supported them all the days of old.

³ And I myself taught Ephraim to walk; I took them* in my* arms, but they did not know that I healed them. ⁴ I drew them _⌊with human ties_⌋,* with the bands of love. I was to them like one who lifted up* a yoke on their jaws,* though I bent down to them* and let them* eat.

¹⁸ And for a period of time of about forty years, he put up with them in the wilderness.

²⁰ And they rose up early in the morning and went out to the desert of Tekoa. And when they went out, Jehoshaphat stood and said, "Hear me, O Judah and inhabitants of Jerusalem! Believe in Yahweh your God, and you shall be established! Believe in his prophets, and you shall succeed!"

²² because they did not believe God, and they did not trust his salvation.

²⁴ Then they refused the desirable land; they did not believe his word,

⁹ And the head of Ephraim is Samaria, and the head of Samaria is the son of Remaliah. If you do not believe then you will not endure." '"

¹² Watch out, brothers, lest there be in some of you an evil, unbelieving heart, with the result that you fall away* from the living God.

¹⁸ And to whom did he swear they would not enter into his rest, except those who were disobedient? ¹⁹ And so we see that they were not able to enter because of unbelief.

⁵ Now I want to remind you, although you know everything once and for all,* that Jesus,* having saved the people out of the land of Egypt, the second time destroyed those who did not believe.

²¹ And Yahweh was going before them by day in a column of cloud to lead them on the way and by night in a column of fire to give light to them to go by day and night. ²² The column of cloud by day and the column of fire by night did not depart from before the people.

¹⁹ And the angel of God who was going before the camp of Israel set out and went behind them. And the column of cloud set out ahead of them, and it stood still behind them, ²⁰ so that it came between the camp of Egypt and the camp of Israel. And _⌊it was a dark cloud_⌋,* but it gave light to the night,* so that _⌊neither approached the other_⌋* all night.

²⁴ And during the morning watch, Yahweh looked down to the Egyptian camp from in the column of fire and cloud, and he threw the Egyptian camp into a panic.

³⁴ And the cloud covered the tent of assembly, and the glory of Yahweh filled the tabernacle. ³⁵ And Moses was unable to go into the tent of assembly because the cloud settled on it and the glory of Yahweh filled the tabernacle. ³⁶ And when the cloud was lifted from the tabernacle, the _⌊Israelites_⌋* set out on all their journeys. ³⁷ But if the cloud was not lifted, they did not set out until the day of its being lifted. ³⁸ For the cloud of Yahweh was on the tabernacle by day, and fire was on it by night before the eyes of all the house of Israel throughout all their journeys.

¹⁵ And on a day setting up the tabernacle, the cloud covered the tent of the tabernacle, the tent of the testimony; in the evening it was on the tabernacle as an appearance of fire until morning. ¹⁶ So it was* continually; the cloud would cover it and the appearance of fire by night. ¹⁷ Whenever the cloud lifted up from on the tent, after that the _⌊Israelites_⌋* would set out, and in the place where the cloud dwelled, there the _⌊Israelites_⌋* camped. ¹⁸ On the _⌊command of Yahweh_⌋* the _⌊Israelites_⌋* would set out, and on the _⌊command of Yahweh_⌋* they encamped; all the days that the cloud dwelled on the tabernacle they encamped. ¹⁹ And when the cloud prolonged on the tabernacle many days the _⌊Israelites_⌋* kept the kept requirement of Yahweh and did not set out. ²⁰ When the cloud _⌊remained_⌋* a number of days on the tabernacle, on the _⌊command of Yahweh_⌋* they encamped; and on the _⌊command of Yahweh_⌋* they set out. ²¹ When the cloud _⌊remained_⌋* from evening until morning, and the cloud lifted up in the morning, they would set out, or if it remained in the daytime and at night, when the cloud lifted up they set out. ²² When it was two days, a month, _⌊or a year_⌋* that the cloud prolonged to dwell on the tabernacle, the _⌊Israelites_⌋* encamped, and they did not set out; when it lifted up they set out.

¹¹ And it happened, in the second year, in the second month, on the twentieth of the month the cloud was lifted from upon the tabernacle of the testimony.* ¹² And the _⌊Israelites_⌋* set out for their journey* from the desert of Sinai, and the cloud dwelled in the desert of Paran.

³³ And so they set out from the mountain of Yahweh a journey of three days, with the ark of the covenant of Yahweh setting out ahead of them* three days' journey to search out a resting place for them;

¹⁴ and they will _⌊tell it_⌋* to the inhabitants of this land. They heard that you, Yahweh, are in the midst of this people, that you are seen eye to eye, and your cloud is standing over them, and in a column of cloud you go before them by day and in a column of fire at night.

¹² You led them by day with a column of cloud and with a column of fire by night, to give them light on the way that they were to go.

²⁰ You led your people like a flock by the hand of Moses and Aaron.

¹⁴ And he led them with the cloud by day, and all night with a fiery light.

³⁹ He spread out a cloud for a covering, and fire to give light at night.

⁵ Then Yahweh will create over all of the site* of _⌊Mount Zion_⌋* and over her assembly a cloud by day and smoke and the brightness of flaming fire by night. Indeed, over all the glory there will be a canopy, ⁶ and it will be a shelter for shade from the heat by day, and a refuge and a hiding place from rainstorm and from rain.

⁶ On that day _⌊I swore_⌋* to them to bring them out from the land of Egypt to the land that I had searched out for them, flowing with milk and honey—it is the most beautiful of all of the lands.

⁵ And I will be for it a wall of fire all around,' _⌊declares_⌋* Yahweh, 'and I will be the glory in its midst.'"

²² But because all the men who have seen my glory and my signs that I did in Egypt and in the desert yet tested me these ten times and did not listen to my voice, ²³ they will not see the land that I swore by oath to their ancestors,* and all those who despised me will not see it. ²⁴ But my servant Caleb, because another spirit was with him, he remained true after me, and I will bring him into the land that _⌊he entered_⌋,* and his offspring will take possession of it. ²⁵ And the Amalekites and the Canaanites live in the valleys; tomorrow turn and set out for the desert by way of the _⌊Red Sea_⌋."* ²⁶ And Yahweh spoke to Moses and Aaron, saying, ²⁷ "How long will I bear this evil community who are grumbling against me? I have heard the grumbling of the _⌊Israelites_⌋* which _⌊they are making_⌋* against me. ²⁸ Say to them, 'Surely as I live,' _⌊declares_⌋* Yahweh, 'just as you spoke _⌊in my hearing_⌋,* so I will do to you; ²⁹ in this desert your corpses will fall, and all your counted ones, according to all your number, from _⌊twenty years old_⌋* and above who grumbled against me. ³⁰ You yourselves will not come into the land that _⌊I swore by oath_⌋* to make you to dwell in it, but Caleb son of Jephunneh and Joshua son of Nun.

⁸ This is what your fathers did when I sent them from Kadesh Barnea to see the land. ⁹ When they went up to the valley* of Eshcol and saw the land, they discouraged the heart of the _⌊Israelites_⌋* so that they did not come to the land that Yahweh gave to them. ¹⁰ So _⌊Yahweh's anger burned_⌋* on that day, and he swore an oath, saying, ¹¹ 'The men who went up from Egypt, from _⌊those twenty years old_⌋* and above, will not see the land that I swore with an oath to Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob because they have not wholly followed me, ¹² except Caleb son of Jephunneh the Kenizzite and Joshua son of Nun, because they followed Yahweh wholly.' ¹³ And _⌊Yahweh became angry_⌋,* and he made them wander in the desert forty years until the entire generation who did evil in the _⌊sight of Yahweh_⌋* _⌊had died_⌋.*

¹⁴ Now the _⌊length of time_⌋* that we had traveled from Kadesh Barnea until the time when we crossed the wadi* of Zered was thirty-eight years, until the perishing of all of that generation; that is, the men of war from the midst of the camp as Yahweh had sworn to them. ¹⁵ The hand of Yahweh was against them to root them out from the midst of the camp until they perished completely.

¹¹ Therefore I swore in my anger, 'They shall surely not enter into my rest.'"

¹⁵ And also _⌊I myself swore_⌋* to them in the desert not to bring them into the land that I had given to them, flowing with milk and honey—it is the most beautiful of all of the lands—

⁸ do not harden your hearts as in the rebellion, in the day of testing in the wilderness, ⁹ where your fathers tested me by trial and saw my works ¹⁰ for forty years. Therefore I was angry with this generation, and I said, 'They always go astray in their heart, and they do not know my ways.' ¹¹ As I swore in my anger, '_⌊They will never enter_⌋* into my rest.'"*

⁶ from the tribe of Judah, Caleb son of Jephunneh;

²⁴ But my servant Caleb, because another spirit was with him, he remained true after me, and I will bring him into the land that _⌊he entered_⌋,* and his offspring will take possession of it.

⁶⁵ For Yahweh said to them, "They will surely die in the desert." And not a man was left over from them, except Caleb son of Jephunneh and Joshua son of Nun.

¹² except Caleb son of Jephunneh the Kenizzite and Joshua son of Nun, because they followed Yahweh wholly.'

¹⁹ These are the names of the men: of the tribe of Judah, Caleb son of Jephunneh;

⁶ Then the descendants* of Judah came to Joshua at Gilgal; and Caleb son of Jephunneh the Kenizzite said to him, "You know the word that Yahweh said to Moses the man of God at Kadesh Barnea concerning you and me. ⁷ _⌊I was forty years old_⌋* when Moses Yahweh's servant sent me from Kadesh Barnea to spy out the land, and I returned _⌊with an honest report_⌋.* ⁸ My companions who went up with me made the hearts* of the people melt, but I remained true to Yahweh my God. ⁹ And Moses swore on that day, saying, 'Surely the land that your foot has trodden on will be an inheritance to you and your sons forever, because you remained true to Yahweh my God.' ¹⁰ So then, look, Yahweh has kept me alive just as he promised these forty-five years,* from the time that Yahweh spoke this word to Moses while Israel _⌊wandered_⌋* in the wilderness. Now look, today _⌊I am eighty-five years old_⌋.* ¹¹ Today I am still strong, just as on the day that Moses sent me; as my strength was then, so now also is my strength for war _⌊and for daily activities_⌋.* ¹² So now give me this hill country that Yahweh spoke of on that day, for you heard on that day that the Anakites were there, with great and fortified cities. Perhaps Yahweh is with me, and I will drive them out just as Yahweh promised."* ¹³ And Joshua blessed him and gave Hebron to Caleb son of Jephunneh as an inheritance. ¹⁴ Thus Hebron became the inheritance of Caleb son of Jephunneh the Kenizzite to this day, because he remained true to Yahweh the God of Israel.

¹² And Caleb said, "Whoever attacks Kiriath Sepher and captures it, I will give to him Acsah my daughter as a wife." ¹³ Othniel son of Kenaz, the younger brother of Caleb, captured it, and he gave to him Acsah his daughter as a wife. ¹⁴ When she came to him, she urged him to ask her father for a field. As she dismounted from the donkey, Caleb said to her, "_⌊What do you want_⌋?"* ¹⁵ And she said to him, "Give me _⌊a gift_⌋;* you have given me the land of the Negev,* and give me also a spring of water." And Caleb gave to her the upper and lower spring.*

¹² But Yahweh said to Moses and Aaron, "Because you have not trusted in me, to regard me as holy _⌊in the sight of_⌋* the _⌊Israelites_⌋,* you will not bring this assembly into the land that I have given to them."

¹³ When you see it, you will be gathered to your people, just as Aaron your brother was gathered, ¹⁴ because you rebelled against my word in the desert of Zin when the community quarreled regarding my holiness at the waters." (These are the waters of Meribah-Kadesh in the desert of Zin.)

²³ "And I pleaded with Yahweh at that time, saying, ²⁴ 'Lord Yahweh, you have begun to show your servant your greatness and your strong hand, for what* god is there in the heaven or on the earth who can do according to your works and according to your mighty deeds? ²⁵ Let me cross over, please, and let me see the good land _⌊that is beyond the Jordan_⌋,* this good hill country and Lebanon.' ²⁶ But Yahweh was very angry with me because of you, and he would not listen to me, and Yahweh said, '_⌊Enough of that from you_⌋!* You shall not speak to me any longer about this matter!

²¹ "And Yahweh was angry with me _⌊because of you_⌋,* and he swore _⌊that I would not cross the Jordan_⌋* and _⌊that I would not go to the good land_⌋* that Yahweh your God is giving you as an inheritance.

⁴ And Yahweh said to him, "This is the land that I swore to Abraham to Isaac and to Jacob, _⌊saying_⌋,* 'To your offspring I will give it.' I have let you see it with your eyes, but you shall not cross _⌊into it_⌋."*

³² They also angered God at the waters of Meribah, and it went badly for Moses on account of them, ³³ because they rebelled against his Spirit,* and he spoke thoughtlessly with his lips.

⁹ And Moses said to Joshua, "Choose men for us, and go out, fight against Amalek tomorrow. I will be standing on the top of the hill, and the staff of God will be in my hand." ¹⁰ And Joshua did as Moses had said to him to fight with Amalek. And Moses, Aaron, and Hur went up to the top of the hill. ¹¹ And* when Moses raised his hand, Israel would prevail, but when he rested his hand, Amalek would prevail. ¹² But the hands of Moses were heavy, and they took a stone and placed it under him, and he sat on it; Aaron and Hur supported his hands, _⌊one on each side_⌋,* and his hands were steady until _⌊sundown_⌋.* ¹³ And Joshua defeated Amalek and his people with the _⌊edge of the sword_⌋.* ¹⁴ And Yahweh said to Moses, "Write this as a memorial in the scroll and _⌊recite it in the hearing of_⌋* Joshua, because I will utterly blot out the remembrance of Amalek from under the heavens."

¹³ And Moses got up, and Joshua, his assistant, and Moses went up to the mountain of God.

¹¹ And Yahweh would speak to Moses face to face, as a man speaks to his neighbor. And he would return to the camp, and his assistant Joshua the son of Nun, a young man, did not leave the middle of the tent.

⁸ from the tribe of Ephraim, Hoshea son of Nun;

¹⁶ These are the names of the men whom Moses sent to explore the land. And Moses called Hoshea son of Nun Joshua.

³⁰ You yourselves will not come into the land that _⌊I swore by oath_⌋* to make you to dwell in it, but Caleb son of Jephunneh and Joshua son of Nun.

³⁸ But Joshua son of Nun and Caleb son of Jephunneh lived from among the men who went to explore the land.

¹⁸ Then Yahweh said to Moses, "Take Joshua son of Nun, a man in whom is the spirit, and place your hand on him. ¹⁹ Have him stand before Eleazar the priest and before the entire community, and _⌊commission him_⌋* _⌊in their sight_⌋.* ²⁰ You will give to him from your authority so that the entire community of Israel will _⌊obey him_⌋.* ²¹ He will stand before Eleazar the priest, who will ask for him by the decision* of the Urim before Yahweh. On _⌊his command_⌋* they will go out, and at _⌊his command_⌋* they will come in, both he and all of the _⌊Israelites_⌋* with him, the entire community." ²² Moses did just as Yahweh commanded him, and he took Joshua and set him before Eleazar the priest and before the entire community. ²³ And he placed his hands on him and _⌊commissioned him_⌋* just as Yahweh spoke by the hand of Moses.*

²⁸ Now instruct Joshua and support him and encourage him because he himself* will cross over before this people and enable them to inherit the land that you will see.'

⁷ Then Moses summoned Joshua, and he said to him _⌊in the presence of all Israel_⌋,* "Be strong and be courageous, for you will go with this people into the land that Yahweh swore to their ancestors* to give to them, and you will give it to them as an inheritance. ⁸ Yahweh is the one going _⌊before you_⌋;* he will be with you, and he will not leave you alone, and he will not forsake you; you shall not be afraid, and you shall not be discouraged."

²³ Then he* told Joshua the son of Nun, and said to him, "Be strong and be courageous, for you shall bring the _⌊Israelites_⌋* into the land that I swore to them, and I will be with you."

¹ After the death of Moses the servant of Yahweh, Yahweh said to Joshua son of Nun, the assistant* of Moses, saying,

⁶ Be strong and courageous, for you will give the people this land as an inheritance that I swore to their ancestors* to give them. ⁷ Only be strong and very courageous _⌊to observe diligently the whole law_⌋* that Moses my servant commanded you. Do not turn aside from it, to the right or left, so that you may succeed _⌊wherever you go_⌋.* ⁸ The scroll of this law will not depart from your mouth; you will meditate on it day and night so that _⌊you may observe diligently all that is written_⌋* in it. For then you will succeed in your ways and prosper. ⁹ Did I not command you? Be strong and courageous! Do not fear or be dismayed, for Yahweh your God is with you _⌊wherever you go_⌋."*

²² Then Saul sent word to Jesse, saying, "Please let David stand before me, because he has found favor _⌊in my sight_⌋."*

²⁹ A man who is skillful in his work, you shall see: before kings, he will serve; he will not serve before the commoners.

³¹ But your little children, whom you said would be plunder, I will bring them, and they will know the land that you rejected.

¹⁵ He shall eat curds and honey until he knows to reject the evil and to choose the good. ¹⁶ For before the boy knows to reject the evil and to choose the good, _⌊the land whose two kings you dread will be abandoned._⌋*

¹¹ And should I not be concerned about Nineveh, the great city, _⌊in which there are_⌋* more _⌊than one hundred and twenty thousand_⌋* people who do not know right from left,* plus many animals?"

¹¹ for although they* had not yet been born, or done anything good or evil, in order that the purpose of God according to election might remain,

³ among whom also we all formerly lived in the desires of our flesh, doing the will* of the flesh and of the mind, and we were children of wrath* by nature, as also the rest of them were.

²⁵ And the Amalekites and the Canaanites live in the valleys; tomorrow turn and set out for the desert by way of the _⌊Red Sea_⌋."*

³⁹ And Moses spoke words to all the _⌊Israelites_⌋,* and the people mourned greatly. ⁴⁰ They rose early in the morning and went to the top of the mount, saying, "Here we are. We will go up to the place that Yahweh said, because we have sinned." ⁴¹ But Moses said, "Why are you going against the command of Yahweh? It will not succeed. ⁴² You should not go up because Yahweh is not in your midst; do not let yourselves be defeated in the presence of your enemies, ⁴³ because the Amalekites* and the Canaanites* are there _⌊before you_⌋,* and you will fall by the sword; because you have turned back from Yahweh, and Yahweh will not be with you." ⁴⁴ But they dared to go to the top of the mountain, and the ark of the covenant of Yahweh and Moses did not depart from the midst of the camp. ⁴⁵ So the Amalekites* and the Canaanites* who were living on the mountain descended, and they beat them down, up to Hormah.

³⁴ Balaam said to the angel of Yahweh, "I have sinned because I did not know that you were standing to meet me in the road. Now, _⌊if it is displeasing to you_⌋,* I will turn back."

³ As for the folly of humankind, its way leads to ruin, and against Yahweh his heart* will rage.

¹⁷ And I will set my face against you, and you shall be defeated _⌊before_⌋* your enemies; and your haters shall rule over you, and you shall flee away, but* there shall not be _⌊anybody who is pursuing_⌋* you.

⁴¹ But Moses said, "Why are you going against the command of Yahweh? It will not succeed. ⁴² You should not go up because Yahweh is not in your midst; do not let yourselves be defeated in the presence of your enemies, ⁴³ because the Amalekites* and the Canaanites* are there _⌊before you_⌋,* and you will fall by the sword; because you have turned back from Yahweh, and Yahweh will not be with you."

⁸ Please, my Lord! What can I say after _⌊Israel has fled from its enemies_⌋?* ⁹ The Canaanites and all the inhabitants of the land will hear of this, and they will surround us and cut off our name from the land. What will you do, for your great name?" ¹⁰ And Yahweh said to Joshua, "Stand up! _⌊Why_⌋* have you fallen on your face? ¹¹ Israel has sinned and _⌊transgressed my covenant_⌋* that I commanded them. They have taken from the devoted things;* they have stolen and acted deceitfully, and they have put them among their belongings. ¹² The _⌊Israelites_⌋* were unable to stand before their enemies; _⌊they fled from their enemies_⌋* because they have become a thing devoted* for destruction. _⌊I will be with you no more_⌋* unless you destroy the devoted things* from among you. ¹³ Get up, sanctify the people, and say, 'Sanctify yourselves for tomorrow. Thus says Yahweh the God of Israel: "There are devoted things* in your midst, O Israel. You will be unable to stand before you enemies until you remove the devoted things* from your midst."

² The Philistines lined up for the battle to meet Israel, and the battle was prolonged* until Israel was defeated before the Philistines, _⌊who_⌋* killed about four thousand men _⌊on the battlefield_⌋.*

¹⁰ So the Philistines fought and Israel was defeated and each man fled to his tent, for the slaughter was very great. Thirty thousand foot soldiers from Israel fell.

¹⁷ One thousand _⌊because of_⌋* a threat of one, _⌊because_⌋* of a threat of five you shall flee, until you are left like a flagstaff on _⌊top_⌋* of a mountain, and like a signal on a hill.

¹ Look! The hand of Yahweh is not too short _⌊to save_⌋,* and his ear is not too dull _⌊to hear_⌋.* ² Rather, your iniquities have been _⌊barriers_⌋* between you and your God, and your sins have hidden his face from you, from hearing.

¹² Even though they bring up their children, I will bereave them before maturity.* Woe to them indeed, when I depart from them!

⁴⁴ But they dared to go to the top of the mountain, and the ark of the covenant of Yahweh and Moses did not depart from the midst of the camp.

⁷ because the mindset of the flesh is enmity toward God, for it is not subjected to the law of God, for it is not able to do so, ⁸ and those who are in the flesh are not able to please God.

⁴⁵ So the Amalekites* and the Canaanites* who were living on the mountain descended, and they beat them down, up to Hormah.

³ Yahweh heard the voice of Israel; he gave to them the Canaanites, and _⌊they destroyed them_⌋* and their cities. They called the name of the place Hormah.

²⁵ "Yahweh shall cause you to be defeated _⌊before_⌋* your enemies; on one road you shall go _⌊against_⌋* them,* but you will flee on seven roads _⌊before_⌋* them,* and you shall become a thing of horror to all of the kingdoms of the earth.

³⁰ How could one chase a thousand and two could cause a myriad to flee, if their Rock had not sold them, and Yahweh had not given them up?

¹² They surrounded me like bees; they were extinguished like a fire of thorns. In the name of Yahweh I opposed them indeed.

¹⁸ And this shall happen: On that day, Yahweh will whistle for the fly that is at the end of the stream of Egypt and the bee that is in the land of Assyria.

³⁴ When he killed some of them, then they sought him, and repented and earnestly sought God.

¹⁷ For you know that also afterwards, when he* wanted to inherit the blessing, he was rejected, because he did not find an occasion for repentance, although he sought it with tears.

³⁴ According to the number of the days* that you explored the land, forty days,* _⌊a day for each year_⌋,* you will bear your sins forty years,* and you will know my opposition.'

²² And they set out from Kadesh. The _⌊Israelites_⌋,* the whole community, came to Mount Hor.

¹⁶ because when they came up from Egypt, Israel went through the wilderness to the _⌊Red Sea_⌋* and went to Kadesh. ¹⁷ Israel sent messengers to the king of Edom, saying, "Please let us cross through your land," but the king of Edom would not listen. And they also sent messengers to the king of Moab, but he was not willing. So Israel stayed in Kadesh.
