To Makir, the firstborn of Manasseh, the father of Gilead, _⌊were allotted_⌋* Gilead and Bashan, because he was a warrior.* ² An allotment was made for the remaining descendants* of Manasseh, according to their families: For the children of Abiezer, Helek, Asriel, Shechem, Hepher, and Shemida—these were the male descendants* of Manasseh son of Joseph according to their families. ³ But Zelophehad son of Hepher, son of Gilead, son of Makir, son of Manasseh, had no sons, only daughters. These are the names of his daughters: Mahlah, Noah, Hoglah, Milcah, and Tirzah. ⁴ They came before Eleazar the priest, Joshua son of Nun, and the leaders, saying, "Yahweh commanded Moses to give an inheritance to us among our kinsmen."* Therefore, according to the _⌊command of Yahweh_⌋* he gave them an inheritance among the kinsmen* of their father. ⁵ Thus ten shares fell to Manasseh, besides the land of Gilead and Bashan, which is beyond the Jordan, ⁶ because the daughters of Manasseh received an inheritance among his sons. And the land of Gilead was allotted to the remaining descendants* of Manasseh. ⁷ The border of Manasseh was from Asher to Micmethath, which is opposite Shechem;* then the border goes to the south, to the inhabitants of En Tappuah. ⁸ The land of Tappuah _⌊belonged to Manasseh_⌋,* but Tuppuah on the border of Manasseh _⌊belonged to the descendants of Ephraim_⌋.* ⁹ Then the border goes down to the wadi* of Kanah to the south of the wadi. These cities belong to Ephraim among the cities of Manasseh. The border of Manasseh is north of the wadi, and _⌊it ends_⌋* at the sea. ¹⁰ The south is Ephraim's, and the north is Manasseh's; the sea is their* border; Asher touches the north and on the east Issachar. ¹¹ In Issachar and Asher, Manasseh had Beth-shean and its villages, Ibleam and its villages, the inhabitants of Dor and its villages, the inhabitants of En-dor and its villages, the inhabitants of Taanach and its villages, the inhabitants of Megiddo and its villages; the third is Napheth. ¹² But the descendants* of Manasseh were not able to take possession of these towns; the Canaanites* were determined to live in this land. ¹³ And it happened, when the _⌊Israelites_⌋* grew strong, they put the Canaanites* to forced labor but never drove them out completely. ¹⁴ The descendants* of Joseph spoke with Joshua, saying, "Why have you given us* one allotment and one share as an inheritance? We are many people, which Yahweh has blessed." ¹⁵ And Joshua said to them, "If you are many people, go up to the forest and clear a place there for yourselves in the land of the Perizzites* and Rephaim, since the hill country of Ephraim is too narrow for you." ¹⁶ And the descendants* of Joseph said, "The hill country is not enough for us, and all of the Canaanites* living in the land of the valley have chariots* of iron, those in Beth-shean and its villages, and those in the Jezreel Valley." ¹⁷ And Joshua said to the house of Joseph, to Ephraim and Manasseh, "You are many people and have great power; you will not have one allotment only; ¹⁸ the hill country will be yours. Even though it is a forest, you will clear it, and it will be yours to its farthest borders. You will drive out the Canaanites,* even though they have iron chariots and are strong."

⁵¹ And Joseph called the name of the firstborn Manasseh, for he said, "God has caused me to forget all my hardship and all my father's house."

²⁰ And Ephraim and Manasseh, whom Asenath, daughter of Potiphera, priest of On bore to him, were born to Joseph in the land of Egypt.

¹⁸ And Joseph said to his father, "Not so, my father; because this one is the firstborn. Put your right hand upon his head."

²³ And Joseph saw Ephraim's children to the third generation. Moreover, the children of Makir, son of Manasseh, were born on the knees of Joseph.

²⁹ The descendants* of Manasseh: of Makir, the clan of the Makirites.* And Makir fathered Gilead; of Gilead, the clan of the Gileadites.*

¹ Then the daughters of Zelophehad, the son of Hepher, the son of Gilead, the son of Makir, the son of Manasseh, of the clan of Manasseh the son of Joseph, came near; and these were the names of his daughters: Mahlah, Noah, Hoglah, and Tirzah.

³³ So Moses gave to them, to the descendants* of Gad and the descendants* of Reuben, and to half of the tribe of Joseph's son Manasseh, the kingdom of Sihon the king of Amorites and the kingdom of Og the king of the Bashan, the land with its cities and their territories, the cities of the surrounding land.

³⁹ The descendants* of Makir son of Manasseh went to Gilead, and they captured it and drove out the Amorites* who were in it. ⁴⁰ So Moses gave Gilead to Makir son of Manasseh, and he lived in it.

¹³ And the remainder of Gilead and all of Bashan, the kingdom of Og, I gave to the half-tribe of Manasseh, the whole region of Argo. All of that area of Bashan was called the land of the Rephaim. ¹⁴ Jair the descendant* of Manasseh acquired the whole region of Argob, up to the boundary of the Geshurites and the Maacathites, and he called it,* that is Bashan, after his own name, Havvoth Jair, _⌊as it still is today_⌋.* ¹⁵ And also I gave Gilead to Makir.

¹⁷ But he shall acknowledge the firstborn son of the disliked wife _⌊by giving_⌋* him a double portion of _⌊all that he has_⌋,* for he is the firstfruit of his vigor;* to him is the legal claim of the birthright.*

¹⁴ From Ephraim is their root into Amalek, after you, Benjamin, with your family; from Makir the commanders went down, and from Zebulun those carrying the scepter of the military commander.

²³ And Geshur and Aram took Havvoth-Jair from them, Kenath and its villages, sixty cities. All these were the _⌊descendants_⌋* of Makir, the father of Gilead.

¹⁴ The sons of Manasseh: Asriel, whom his Aramean concubine bore; she gave birth to Makir the father of Gilead. ¹⁵ And Machir took a wife for Huppim and for Shuppim. And the name of his sister was Maacah. And the name of the second, Zelophehad. And Zelophehad had daughters.

²⁹ The descendants* of Manasseh: of Makir, the clan of the Makirites.* And Makir fathered Gilead; of Gilead, the clan of the Gileadites.* ³⁰ These were the descendants* of Gilead: of Iezer, the clan of the Iezerites;* of Helek, the clan of the Helekites;* ³¹ and of Asriel, the clan of the Asrielites;* and of Shechem, the clan of the Shechemites;* ³² and of Shemida, the clan of the Shemidaites;* and of Hepher, the clan of the Hepherites.*

¹¹ The angel of Yahweh came and sat under the oak* that was at Ophrah that belonged to Jehoash the Abiezrite; and Gideon his son was threshing wheat in the winepress to hide it* from the Midianites.*

² And he said to them, "What I have done now in comparison with you? Are not the gleanings of Ephraim better than the grape harvest of Abiezer?

¹⁸ And his sister, Hammolecheth, gave birth to Ishhod, Abiezer, and Mahlah.

³³ Zelophehad son of Hepher did not have sons, but only daughters; and the names* of the daughters of Zelophehad were Mahlah, Noah, Hoglah, Milcah, and Tirzah.

² And they said, "Yahweh commanded my lord to give the land by lot as an inheritance to the _⌊Israelites_⌋,* and my lord was commanded by Yahweh to give the inheritance of Zelophehad our brother to his daughters. ³ But if they become wives to one of the sons from another tribe of the _⌊Israelites_⌋,* their inheritance will disappear from the inheritance of our ancestors,* and it will be added to the inheritance of the tribe to which they belong; the lot of our inheritance would disappear. ⁴ When the Jubilee of the _⌊Israelites_⌋* _⌊comes_⌋,* it will be added to the inheritance of the tribe to which they belong; and their inheritance will disappear from the tribe of our father." ⁵ Then Moses commanded the _⌊Israelites_⌋* by the command of Yahweh, saying, "The tribe of the descendants* of Joseph is right regarding what they are speaking. ⁶ This is the word that Yahweh commanded the daughters of Zelophehad, saying, '_⌊Let them marry_⌋* _⌊whomever they like_⌋;* only _⌊they must marry_⌋* from within the clan of the tribe of their father. ⁷ Thus an inheritance of the _⌊Israelites_⌋* will not go around from tribe to tribe. Rather, the inheritance of each tribe of his father will remain with the _⌊Israelites_⌋.* ⁸ Every daughter who possesses an inheritance from the tribes of the _⌊Israelites_⌋* will _⌊marry_⌋* one of the clan of the tribe of her father, so that the _⌊Israelites_⌋* will possess the inheritance of his ancestors.* ⁹ Therefore an inheritance will not go around from one tribe to another tribe because the tribes of the _⌊Israelites_⌋* will each hold to their own inheritance.'" ¹⁰ Just as Yahweh commanded to Moses, so the daughters of Zelophehad did: ¹¹ Mahlah, Tirzah, Hoglah, Milcah, and Noah, the daughters of Zelophehad, _⌊married_⌋* the sons of their uncles.

⁵ So Moses brought their case before Yahweh. ⁶ And Yahweh said to Moses, saying, ⁷ "_⌊The statements of the daughters of Zelophehad are right_⌋.* You must surely give them the property of an inheritance in the midst of their father's brothers, and you must transfer the inheritance of their father to them.

¹⁷ "These are the names of the men who divide up the land for your inheritance: Eleazar the priest and Joshua son of Nun. ¹⁸ You will take one leader from every tribe to divide up the land for inheritance. ¹⁹ These are the names of the men: of the tribe of Judah, Caleb son of Jephunneh; ²⁰ of the tribe of the descendants of Simeon, Samuel son of Ammihud; ²¹ of the tribe of Benjamin, Elidad son of Chislon; ²² of the tribe of the descendants* of Dan, the leader Bukki son of Jogli; ²³ of the descendants* of Joseph, the tribe of the descendants* of Manasseh, the leader Hanniel son of Ephod. ²⁴ Of the tribe of the descendants* of Ephraim, the leader Kemuel son of Shiphtan; ²⁵ of the tribe of the descendants* of Zebulum, the leader Elizaphan son of Parnach; ²⁶ of the tribe of the descendants* of Issachar, the leader Paltiel son of Azzan; ²⁷ of the tribe of the descendants* of Asher, the leader Ahihud son of Shelomi; ²⁸ of the tribe of the descendants* of Naphtali, the leader Pedahel son of Ammihud." ²⁹ These are those whom Yahweh commanded to allot to the _⌊Israelites_⌋* the land of Canaan.

¹ These are the territories that the _⌊Israelites_⌋* inherited in the land of Canaan, which Eleazar the priest, Joshua son of Nun, and the heads of the families of the tribes of the _⌊Israelites_⌋* gave as an inheritance to them.

²⁸ There is neither Jew nor Greek, there is neither slave nor free, there is neither male and female, for you are all one in Christ Jesus.

³⁰ But if they will not cross over with you armed, they will acquire land in your midst in Canaan." ³¹ The descendants* of Gad and the descendants of Reuben answered and said, "What Yahweh has commanded your servants, we will do. ³² We ourselves will cross over armed _⌊before_⌋* Yahweh to the land of Canaan, and the property of our inheritance will remain with us beyond the Jordan." ³³ So Moses gave to them, to the descendants* of Gad and the descendants* of Reuben, and to half of the tribe of Joseph's son Manasseh, the kingdom of Sihon the king of Amorites and the kingdom of Og the king of the Bashan, the land with its cities and their territories, the cities of the surrounding land. ³⁴ The descendants* of Gad rebuilt Dibon, Ataroth, and Aroer, ³⁵ and Atroth Shophan, Jazer, and Jogbehah, ³⁶ and Beth Nimrah and Beth Haran, the cities of Mibzar, and the sheep pens for flocks. ³⁷ The descendants* of Reuben rebuilt Heshbon, Elealeh, and Kiriathaim, ³⁸ and Nebo, Baal Meon (their names* were changed), and Sibmah, and _⌊they renamed_⌋* the cities that they rebuilt. ³⁹ The descendants* of Makir son of Manasseh went to Gilead, and they captured it and drove out the Amorites* who were in it. ⁴⁰ So Moses gave Gilead to Makir son of Manasseh, and he lived in it. ⁴¹ And Jair son of Manasseh went and captured their unwalled villages, and he called them Havvoth Jair. ⁴² Nobah went and captured Kenath and its villages, and he called it Nobah after his own name.

²⁹ Moses gave an inheritance to the half-tribe of Manasseh; it was for the half-tribe of the descendants* of Manasseh according to their families. ³⁰ Their territory was from Mahanaim, all Bashan, all the kingdom of Og king of Bashan, and all the settlements* of Jair, which are in Bashan, sixty cities, ³¹ and half of Gilead, with Ashtaroth, Edrei, and the cities of the kingdom of Og in Bashan; these were allotted to the children of Makir son of Manasseh, for half of the children of Makir according to their families.

¹² Now his brothers went to pasture the flock of their father in Shechem.

¹⁴ Then he said to him, "Go now, see _⌊if it goes well for your brothers and for the flock_⌋,* then return word to me." And he sent him from the valley of Hebron, and he arrived at Shechem.

⁶ The border continues to the sea; from Micmethath to the north, the border turns to the east to Taanath Shiloh, and it passes along it from the east to Janoah. ⁷ Then it goes down from Janoah to Ataroth and to Naarah; it touches Jericho and ends at the Jordan; ⁸ from Tappuah the border goes to the west, to the wadi* of Kanah, and _⌊it ends_⌋* at the sea. This is the inheritance of the tribe of the descendants* of Ephraim according to their families,

⁷ So _⌊they set apart_⌋* Kedesh in Galilee in the hill country of Naphtali, Shechem in the hill country of Ephraim, and Kiriath Arba* (that is, Hebron) in the hill country of Judah.

²¹ They gave them Shechem, the city of refuge for the killer, and its pasturelands in the hill country of Ephraim, Gezer and its pasturelands,

¹ And Joshua gathered all the tribes of Israel to Shechem; he summoned the elders of Israel, their heads, their judges, and their officials, and they presented themselves before God.

³² The bones of Jacob, which the _⌊Israelites_⌋* had brought out from Egypt, they buried at Shechem, in a piece of land that Jacob had bought from the children of Hamor, the father of Shechem, for one hundred pieces of money;* it became an inheritance for the descendants* of Joseph.

¹ And Abimelech son of Jerub-Baal went to Shechem, to the relatives of his mother, and he said to them and to the house of his mother's father,

¹ Then Rehoboam went to Shechem, for all of Israel had come to Shechem to make him king.

²⁵ Then Jeroboam built Shechem in the hill country of Ephraim, and he resided in it. Then he went out from there and built Penuel.

⁶⁷ And they gave them the cities of refuge: Shechem with its pasturelands in the hill country of Ephraim, Gezer with its pasturelands,

¹⁷ the king of Tappuah, one; the king of Hepher, one;

³⁴ Zanoah, En Gannim, Tappuah, Enam,

⁵³ Janim, Beth-tappuah, Aphekah,

⁸ from Tappuah the border goes to the west, to the wadi* of Kanah, and _⌊it ends_⌋* at the sea. This is the inheritance of the tribe of the descendants* of Ephraim according to their families,

³ Then it goes down, to the west, to the territory of the Japhletites,* up to the territory of Lower Beth-horon, then to Gezer, and _⌊it ends_⌋* at the sea.

⁸ from Tappuah the border goes to the west, to the wadi* of Kanah, and _⌊it ends_⌋* at the sea. This is the inheritance of the tribe of the descendants* of Ephraim according to their families, ⁹ with the cities that were set apart for the descendants* of Ephraim in the midst of the inheritance of the descendants* of Manasseh, all the cities and their villages.

²⁹ then the border turns to Ramah, and up to the fortified city of Tyre, where the border turns to Hosah; _⌊it ends_⌋* at the sea, from Hebel to Aczib.

² and to the kings who were in the north in the hill country, in the Arabah* south of Kinnereth,* in the Shephelah,* and in Naphoth Dor* in the west,

²¹ the king of Taanach, one; the king of Megiddo, one;

²³ the king of Dor in Naphath Dor, one; the king of Goiim for Gilgal, one;

⁹ with the cities that were set apart for the descendants* of Ephraim in the midst of the inheritance of the descendants* of Manasseh, all the cities and their villages.

²⁷ Manasseh did not drive out Beth-Sean and its towns, or Taanach and its towns, or the inhabitants* of Dor and its towns, or the inhabitants of Ibleam and its towns, or the inhabitants of Megiddo and its towns; the Canaanites* were determined to live in this land.

¹⁹ "The kings came, they fought; then the kings of Canaan fought; at Taanach by the waters of Megiddo, they got no plunder in silver.

⁷ So Saul said to his servants, "Search for me _⌊a woman who is a medium_⌋* so that I may go to her and inquire of her." His servants said to him, "Look there is a woman who is a medium in Endor."

¹⁰ And they put his armor in the temple* of the Ashtoreth,* and they fastened his corpse to the wall of Beth Shan.

¹² all of _⌊the valiant men_⌋* set out and went all night and took the corpse of Saul and the corpses of his sons from the wall of Beth Shan, and they came to Jabesh and burned them there.

¹¹ Ben-Abinadab was in all of Naphat of Dor; Taphath the daughter of Solomon was his wife. ¹² Baanah the son of Ahilud was in Taanach and Megiddo and all Beth-Shean which is beside Zarethan below Jezreel, of Beth-Shean up to Abel-Meholah up to the other side of Jokmeam.

¹⁵ This is the account of the forced labor that King Solomon conscripted to build the house of Yahweh and his house, the Millo, the walls of Jerusalem, Hazor, Megiddo, and Gezer.

²⁷ When Ahaziah king of Judah saw, he fled the way of Beth-Haggen. Jehu pursued after him and said, "Shoot him also, in the chariot." They shot him at the ascent of Gur which is in Ibleam, and he fled to Megiddo, but he died there.

²⁹ In his days, Pharaoh Neco, king of Egypt, went up against the king of Assyria at the Euphrates River. King Josiah went to meet him, and he* killed him at Megiddo as soon as he saw him. ³⁰ So his servants drove him dead in a chariot from Megiddo, and they brought him to Jerusalem and buried him in his tomb. Then the people of the land took Jehoahaz the son of Josiah and anointed him and made him king in place of his father.

⁷⁰ And out of the half-tribe of Manasseh: Aner with its pasturelands, and Bileam with its pasturelands for the remaining the clans of the Kohathites.

²⁹ And along the borders of the sons of Manasseh: Beth-Shean and its towns, Taanach and its towns, Megiddo and its towns, and Dor and its towns. In these lived the sons of Joseph the son of Israel.

²² But Josiah did not turn his face from him, but he disguised himself to fight with him. He did not listen to the words of Neco from the mouth of God, and he went out to fight in the plain of Megiddo.

¹⁰ They were destroyed at En-dor; they became dung for the ground.

¹¹ On that day the wailing will be great in Jerusalem, like the wailing for Hadad Rimmon in the plain of Megiddo.

²⁹ I will not drive them out from before you in one year, lest the land become a desolation and _⌊the wild animals_⌋* multiply against you. ³⁰ Little by little I will drive them out from before you until you are fruitful and take possession of the land. ³¹ " 'And I will set your boundary from the _⌊Red Sea_⌋* and up to the sea of the Philistines and from the desert up to the river,* because I will give the inhabitants of the land into your hand, and you will drive them out from before you. ³² You will not make a covenant with them and with their gods. ³³ They will not live in your land, lest they cause you to sin against me when you serve their gods, for it will be a snare to you.'"

⁵² you will drive out the inhabitants of the land from your presence, and you will destroy all their idols and all the images of their molten idols, and you will demolish all their high places; ⁵³ you will dispossess the land and live in it because I have given the land to you to possess it. ⁵⁴ You will distribute the land by lot according to your clans; to the larger group you will give a larger inheritance, and to the smaller group you will give less inheritance. However the lot falls for him, there the lot will be. You will distribute it according to the tribes of your ancestors.* ⁵⁵ But if you do not drive out the inhabitants of the land from your presence, then it will happen that whomever you let remain of them will be like irritants in your eyes and like thorns in your sides; they will be your enemies in the land in which you live. ⁵⁶ And just as I planned to do to them, I will do to you.'"

⁶³ But the descendants* of Judah were unable to drive out the Jebusites, the inhabitants of Jerusalem, so the Jebusites live with the descendants* of Judah in Jerusalem to this day.

¹⁰ But they did not drive out the Canananites* who were dwelling in Gezer, and so the Canaanites* live in the midst of Ephraim to this day, but they became forced laborers.

²⁷ Manasseh did not drive out Beth-Sean and its towns, or Taanach and its towns, or the inhabitants* of Dor and its towns, or the inhabitants of Ibleam and its towns, or the inhabitants of Megiddo and its towns; the Canaanites* were determined to live in this land. ²⁸ And it happened, when Israel grew strong, they put the Canaanites* to forced labor, but they never totally drove them out.

¹² Therefore do not let sin reign in your mortal body, so that you obey its desires, ¹³ and do not present your members to sin as instruments of unrighteousness, but present yourselves to God as those who are alive from the dead, and your members to God as instruments of righteousness. ¹⁴ For sin will not be master over you, because you are not under law, but under grace.

¹¹ _⌊And then_⌋* if _⌊they accept your terms of peace_⌋* and _⌊they surrender to you_⌋,* _⌊and then_⌋* all the people _⌊inhabiting it_⌋* shall be forced labor for you, and they shall serve you. ¹² But if they _⌊do not accept your terms of peace_⌋* and they want to make war with you, then you shall lay siege against it.* ¹³ And Yahweh your God will give it into your hand, and you shall kill all its males with the _⌊edge_⌋* of the sword. ¹⁴ Only the women and the little children and the domestic animals* and all that shall be in the city, all of its spoil you may loot for yourselves, and you may enjoy the spoil of your enemies that Yahweh you God has given to you. ¹⁵ Thus you shall do to all the far* cities from you, which are not from the cities of these nations located _⌊nearby_⌋.* ¹⁶ But from the cities of these peoples that Yahweh your God is giving to you as an inheritance, you shall not let anything live that breathes.* ¹⁷ Rather, you shall utterly destroy them, the Hittites* and the Amorites,* the Canaanites* and the Perizzites,* the Hivites,* and the Jebusites,* just as Yahweh your God has commanded you, ¹⁸ so that they may not teach you to do like all their detestable things that they do for their gods and thereby you sin against Yahweh your God.

²⁸ And it happened, when Israel grew strong, they put the Canaanites* to forced labor, but they never totally drove them out.

³⁰ Zebulun did not drive out the inhabitants of Kitron or Nahalol, so the Canaanites* lived in their midst and became subjected to forced labor.

³³ Naphtali did not drive out the inhabitants of Beth Shemesh or Beth-anath, but lived in the midst of the Canaanites,* the inhabitants of the land; the inhabitants of Beth Shemesh and Beth-anath became forced labor for them.

³⁵ the Amorites were determined to live in Har-heres,* in Aijalon, and in Shaalbim, but the hand of the house of Joseph was heavy on them, and they became subjected to forced labor.

¹ The battle was prolonged between the house of Saul and the house of David, but David _⌊was growing stronger and stronger_⌋* while the house of Saul _⌊was becoming weaker and weaker_⌋.*

⁷ All the people who remained from the Hittites, the Amorites, the Perizzites, the Hivites, and the Jebusites who were not from Israel, ⁸ from the descendants* who were left over after them in the land, whom the Israelites had not destroyed, Solomon conscripted them as forced labor until this day.

¹⁰ Finally, become strong in the Lord and in the might of his strength.

¹³ I am able to do all things by the one who strengthens me.

¹⁸ But grow in the grace and knowledge of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. To him be the glory, both now and to the day of eternity. Amen.

¹⁹ But his father refused and said, "I know, my son; I know. He also shall become a people, and he also shall be great, but his younger brother shall be greater than him, and his offspring shall become a multitude of nations."

²² And I have given to you one slope of land rather than your brothers, which I took from the hand of the Amorites by my sword and with my bow."

²² Joseph is the bough* of a fruitful vine, a fruitful bough* by a spring. His branches climb over the wall. ²³ _⌊The archers_⌋* fiercely attacked him. They shot arrows at him and were hostile to him. ²⁴ But his bow remained in a steady position; _⌊his arms_⌋* were made agile by the hands of the Mighty One of Jacob. From there is the Shepherd, the Rock of Israel. ²⁵ Because of the God of your father he will help you and by Shaddai* he will bless you with the blessings of heaven above, blessings of the deep that crouches beneath, blessings of the breasts and the womb. ²⁶ The blessings of your father are superior to the blessings of my ancestors, to the bounty of the everlasting hills. May they be on the head of Joseph, and on the forehead of the prince of his brothers.

³⁴ These were the clans of Manasseh, and the ones counted of them were fifty-two thousand seven hundred. ³⁵ These were the descendants* of Ephraim according to their clans: of Shuthelah, the clan of the Shuthelahites;* of Beker, the clan of the Bekerites;* of Tahan, the clan of the Tahanites.* ³⁶ And these were the descendants* of Shuthelah: of Eran, the family of the Eranites.* ³⁷ These were the clans of the descendants* of Ephraim according to the ones counted of them, thirty-two thousand five hundred. These were the descendants* of Joseph according to their clans.

¹³ And of Joseph he said, "Blessed by Yahweh is his land, with* the choice things of heaven, with* dew, and with* the deep lying down beneath, ¹⁴ and with* the choice things of the fruits* of the the sun, and with the choice things of the yield of the _⌊seasons_⌋,* ¹⁵ and with* the finest things of the ancient mountains, and with* the choice things of the _⌊eternal hills_⌋,* ¹⁶ and with* the choice things of the earth and its fullness, and the favor of the one _⌊who dwelt_⌋* in the bush.* Let them come to the head of Joseph, and to the crown of the prince among his brothers. ¹⁷ As the firstborn of his ox, majesty _⌊belongs to him_⌋,* and his horns are the horns of a wild ox; with them he drives people together,* and they are the myriads of Ephraim, and they are the thousands of Manasseh."

⁷ And there was a quarrel between the herdsmen of the livestock of Abram and the herdsmen of the livestock of Lot. Now at that time the Canaanites and the Perizzites were living in the land.

⁵ In the fourteenth year Kedorlaomer and the kings who were with him came and defeated the Rephaim in Ashteroth-Karnaim, and the Zuzim in Ham, and the Emim in Shaveh-Kiriathaim,

²⁰ the Hittites, the Perizzites, the Rephaim,

² And I will send an angel before you, and I will drive out the Canaanites,* the Amorites,* and the Hittites* and the Perizzites,* the Hivites,* and the Jebusites,*

¹⁸ Now the Philistines had come, and they spread out in the Valley of Rephaim.

²² _⌊Once again_⌋* the Philistines came up and spread out in the Valley of Rephaim.

¹ After finishing these things the officials approached me saying, "The people of Israel, the priests, and the Levites have not separated from the people of the lands with their detestable things, and from the Canaanites, Hittites, Perizzites, Jebusites, Ammonites, Moabites, Egyptians, and Amorites.

⁴⁸ But the one who did not know and did things deserving blows _⌊will be given a light beating_⌋.* And from everyone to whom much has been given, much will be demanded, and from him to whom they entrusted much, they will ask him for even more.

¹¹ In Issachar and Asher, Manasseh had Beth-shean and its villages, Ibleam and its villages, the inhabitants of Dor and its villages, the inhabitants of En-dor and its villages, the inhabitants of Taanach and its villages, the inhabitants of Megiddo and its villages; the third is Napheth.

¹⁸ the hill country will be yours. Even though it is a forest, you will clear it, and it will be yours to its farthest borders. You will drive out the Canaanites,* even though they have iron chariots and are strong."

¹⁸ Their border went to Jezreel, Chesulloth, Shunem,

¹⁹ And Yahweh was with Judah, and he took possession of the hill country, but they could not drive out the inhabitants of the plain because they had chariots of iron.

³ And the _⌊Israelites_⌋* cried to Yahweh, as he had nine hundred iron chariots,* and he oppressed the _⌊Israelites_⌋* _⌊cruelly_⌋* for twenty years.*

¹³ Sisera summoned all his chariots—all nine hundred chariots* of iron—and the entire army that was with him from Harosheth Haggoyim to the wadi* of Kishon.

³³ Then all the Midianites,* Amalekites,* and the people of the east gathered together and crossed the Jordan; and they camped in the valley of Jezreel.

¹² Baanah the son of Ahilud was in Taanach and Megiddo and all Beth-Shean which is beside Zarethan below Jezreel, of Beth-Shean up to Abel-Meholah up to the other side of Jokmeam.

⁴⁶ but the hand of Yahweh was on Elijah; he girded up his loins and ran before Ahab as one comes to Jezreel.

¹ It happened after these things that Naboth the Jezreelite had a vineyard which was in Jezreel beside the palace of Ahab king of Samaria.

²³ Moreover, concerning Jezebel, Yahweh has said, 'The dogs will eat Jezebel in the outer rampart of Jezreel.'

¹⁰ The dogs will eat Jezebel in the territory of Jezreel, and there shall not be _⌊anyone to bury her_⌋.'"* Then he opened the door and fled.

³⁷ So the dead body of Jezebel became dung on the surface spread on the field in the plot of ground of Jezreel, so one cannot say, "This is Jezebel."

⁴ And Yahweh said to him, "_⌊Name him_⌋* Jezreel;* because in a little while _⌊I will punish_⌋* the house of Jehu* for the blood* of Jezreel,* and I will put an end to the kingdom of the house of Israel.* ⁵ _⌊On that day_⌋* I will break the bow of Israel in the Valley of Jezreel."

⁶ Joshua son of Nun and Caleb son of Jephunneh, from the explorers of the land, tore their garments. ⁷ And they said to all the community of the _⌊Israelites_⌋,* "The land that we went through to explore is an _⌊exceptionally good land_⌋.* ⁸ If Yahweh delights in us, then he will bring us into this land, and he will give it to us, a land that is flowing with milk and honey. ⁹ Only do not rebel against Yahweh, and you will not fear the people of the land, because they will be our food. _⌊Their protection_⌋* has been turned from them; Yahweh is with us. You should not fear them."

¹ "If you go out to war against your enemies and you see a horse and a chariot, _⌊an army_⌋* larger that you, you shall not be afraid because of them; for Yahweh your God is with you, the one who brought you from the land of Egypt. ² _⌊And then_⌋* when you approach the battle, then the priest shall come near and speak to the troops. ³ And he shall say to them, 'Hear, Israel, you are near _⌊today_⌋* to the battle against your enemies; _⌊do not lose heart_⌋;* you shall not be afraid, and you shall not panic, and you shall not be terrified _⌊because of them_⌋,* ⁴ for Yahweh your God is going with you to fight for you against your enemies to help you.'

⁴ They came out, they and all their armies with them, as a great army like the sand on the seashore, with very many horses and chariots. ⁵ And all these kings joined forces, and they came and camped together by the waters of Merom to fight with Israel. ⁶ And Yahweh said to Joshua, "Do not be afraid because of their presence, for tomorrow at this time I will hand them over slain to Israel; you will hamstring their horses and burn their chariots with fire."

⁶ all the inhabitants of the hill country, from the Lebanon* up to Misrephoth Maim, and all the Sidonians. I will drive them out from before the _⌊Israelites_⌋;* only allocate it to Israel as an inheritance just as I have commanded you.

⁹ then the border turns from the top of the mountain to the spring of the waters of Nephtoah, and continues* from there to the cities of Mount Ephron; the border then turns to Baalah (that is, Kiriath Jearim);

¹⁵ And Joshua said to them, "If you are many people, go up to the forest and clear a place there for yourselves in the land of the Perizzites* and Rephaim, since the hill country of Ephraim is too narrow for you." ¹⁶ And the descendants* of Joseph said, "The hill country is not enough for us, and all of the Canaanites* living in the land of the valley have chariots* of iron, those in Beth-shean and its villages, and those in the Jezreel Valley."

Yahweh is my light and my salvation; whom shall I fear? Yahweh is the refuge of my life; of whom shall I be afraid? ² When evildoers drew near against me to eat my flesh— my adversaries and my enemies who drew near to me— they themselves stumbled and fell.

¹⁰ You must not fear, for I am with you; you must not be afraid, for I am your God. I will strengthen you, indeed I will help you, indeed I will take hold of you with the right hand of my salvation. ¹¹ Look! All those who are angry with you shall be ashamed and humiliated; _⌊your opponents_⌋* shall be like nothing and shall become lost. ¹² You shall seek them, but* you shall not find them; _⌊your opponents_⌋* shall be like nothing, and the men of your war like nothing. ¹³ For I, Yahweh your God, am grasping your right hand; _⌊it is I who say_⌋* to you, "You must not fear; I myself, I will help you. ¹⁴ You must not fear, O worm of Jacob; people of Israel, I myself, I will help you," _⌊declares_⌋* Yahweh, "and your redeemer is the holy one of Israel. ¹⁵ Look! I will make you into a new sharp threshing sledge, _⌊with_⌋* sharp edges. You shall thresh and crush the mountains, and you shall make the hills like chaff. ¹⁶ You shall winnow them and the wind shall carry them, and the tempest shall scatter them. And you yourself shall rejoice in Yahweh; you shall boast in the holy one of Israel.

¹² "I, I am he who comforts you; who are you that* you are afraid of man? He dies! And of the son of humankind? He is _⌊sacrificed_⌋* as grass! ¹³ And you have forgotten Yahweh, your maker, who stretched out the heavens, and founded the earth. And you tremble continually, all day, because of the wrath of the oppressor when he _⌊takes aim_⌋* to destroy. But* where is the wrath of the oppressor?

³¹ What then shall we say about these things? If God is for us, who can be against us?

³⁷ No, but in all these things we prevail completely through the one who loved us.

⁶ So then, we can say with confidence,
"The Lord is my helper, I will not be afraid.* What will man do to me?"*
