⁵² My enemies hunt me without cause, like a bird.

¹⁰ Look, this day your eyes have seen that Yahweh gave you today into my hand in the cave, and some said to kill you. But _⌊I took pity_⌋* on you and said, 'I will not stretch out my hand against my lord, because he is Yahweh's anointed one.' ¹¹ Now, my father, see, yes, see, the hem of your robe in my hand! For _⌊when I cut_⌋* the hem of your robe I did not kill you. Know and _⌊realize_⌋* that there is no evil or rebellion in my hand. I did not sin against you, but you are hunting down my life to take it. ¹² May Yahweh judge between me and you, and may Yahweh avenge me on you, but my hand will not be against you! ¹³ Just as the ancient proverb says, 'From the wicked, wickedness goes out,' but my hand will not be against you! ¹⁴ After whom did the king of Israel go out? After whom are you pursuing? After a dead dog? After one flea? ¹⁵ May Yahweh be the judge, and let him judge between me and you, and may he see and plead my case. _⌊May he vindicate me against you_⌋!"*

²⁸ Please forgive the transgression of your female servant, because Yahweh will certainly make a lasting house* for my lord, because my lord is fighting the battles of Yahweh, and evil will not be found in you _⌊as long as you live_⌋.* ²⁹ Should a man arise to pursue you and to seek your life, may the life of my lord be wrapped in the pouch* of the living with Yahweh your God. But as for the life of your enemy, he will sling it from within* the pocket of the sling!

¹⁸ Then he said, "Why is my lord pursuing after his servant? For what have I done? And what evil is in my hand? ¹⁹ And so then, please let my lord the king listen to the words of his servant: If Yahweh has incited you against me, may he delight in an offering; but if _⌊it is mortals_⌋,* may they be accursed _⌊before_⌋* Yahweh, for they have driven me away today from sharing in the inheritance of Yahweh, saying, 'Go, serve other gods!' ²⁰ And so then, do not let my blood fall to the ground _⌊away from_⌋* the presence of Yahweh, for the king of Israel has gone out to seek a single flea, as one hunts a partridge in the mountains."

In Yahweh I have taken refuge; how can you say to my soul, "Flee to your mountain like a bird"?

⁷ For without cause they secretly hide the pit with their net for me; without cause they dug it for my life.

¹⁹ Let not those who are wrongfully my enemies* rejoice over me. Nor let those who hate me without cause wink the eye.

⁴ More numerous than the hairs of my head are those hating me without a cause. Those who are destroying me—my enemies wrongfully*— are mighty. What I did not steal, I then must restore.

³ They also surround me with words of hate, and fight me without cause.

¹⁶¹ Princes persecute me without cause, but my heart trembles because of your word.*

¹⁵ And the officials were angry at Jeremiah and they struck him. And they put him in _⌊prison_⌋,* in the house of Jonathan the secretary, for they had converted it to the _⌊prison_⌋*. ¹⁶ So Jeremiah came to the _⌊dungeon_⌋*, even to the vaulted cells, and Jeremiah stayed there many days.

¹⁸ Then Jeremiah said to King Zedekiah, "What did I do wrong to you, or to your servants, or to this people, that you have put me in _⌊prison_⌋?*

⁴ Then the officials said to the king, "Please, this man must be killed, _⌊because_⌋* he is making slack the hands of _⌊the soldiers_⌋* who are left in this city, and the hands of all the people, by speaking to them words like these, for this man is not seeking for welfare* to this people, _⌊but only_⌋* for harm." ⁵ And Zedekiah the king said, "Look, he is in your hand, for the king is not able to do a thing against you." ⁶ So they took Jeremiah and threw him into the pit* of Malchiah, the son of the king, which was in the courtyard of the guard. And they let Jeremiah down by ropes. Now in the pit* there was no water,* _⌊but only_⌋* mud, and Jeremiah sank in the mud.

²⁵ But this happened* so that the word that is written in their law would be fulfilled, 'They hated me without a reason.'
