²⁹ And as* the crowds were increasing, he began to say, "This generation is an evil generation! It demands a sign, and no sign will be given to it except the sign of Jonah!

³ "But* you, come near here, you children of a soothsayer, offspring of an adulterer and she who commits fornication. ⁴ At whom do you make fun? At whom do you _⌊open_⌋* your mouth and _⌊stick out_⌋* your tongue? Are you not children of transgression, offspring of deception,

⁷ But when he* saw many of the Pharisees and Sadducees coming to his baptism, he said to them, "Offspring of vipers! Who warned you to flee from the coming wrath?

³⁸ Then some of the scribes and Pharisees answered him saying, "Teacher, we want to see a sign from you!" ³⁹ But he answered and* said to them, "An evil and adulterous generation desires a sign, and no sign will be given to it except the sign of the prophet Jonah! ⁴⁰ For just as Jonah was in the belly of the huge fish three days and three nights, so the Son of Man will be in the heart of the earth three days and three nights. ⁴¹ The people of Nineveh will stand up at the judgment with this generation and condemn it, because they repented at the proclamation of Jonah, and behold, something* greater than Jonah is here! ⁴² The queen of the south will rise up at the judgment with this generation and condemn it, because she came from the ends of the earth to hear the wisdom of Solomon, and behold, something* greater than Solomon is here!

¹ And when* the Pharisees and Sadducees came to test him,* they asked him to show them a sign from heaven. ² So he answered and* said to them, "When* evening comes you say, 'It will be fair weather because the sky is red,' ³ and early in the morning, 'Today it will be stormy weather, because the sky is red and* darkening.' You know how to evaluate correctly the appearance of the sky, but you are not able to evaluate* the signs of the times. ⁴ An evil and adulterous generation seeks for a sign, and a sign will not be given to it except the sign of Jonah!" And he left them and* went away.

³⁴ For this reason, behold, I am sending to you prophets and wise men and scribes. Some of them you will kill and crucify, and some of them you will flog in your synagogues and will pursue from town to town, ³⁵ so that upon you will come all the righteous blood shed on the earth from the blood of righteous Abel up to the blood of Zechariah son of Barachiah, whom you murdered between the temple and the altar. ³⁶ Truly I say to you, all these things will come upon this generation!

¹¹ And the Pharisees came and began to argue with him, demanding from him a sign from heaven in order to* test him. ¹² And sighing deeply in his spirit, he said, "Why does this generation demand a sign? Truly I say to you, no sign will be given to this generation!"

³⁸ For whoever is ashamed of me and my words in this adulterous and sinful generation, the Son of Man will also be ashamed of him when he comes in the glory of his Father with the holy angels."

⁴¹ So Jesus answered and* said, "O unbelieving and perverted generation! _⌊How long_⌋* will I be with you and put up with you? Bring your son here!"

¹⁶ And others, in order to* test him,* were demanding from him a sign from heaven.

⁵⁰ so that the blood of all the prophets that has been shed from the foundation of the world may be required of this generation,

¹ During _⌊this time_⌋* when* a crowd of many thousands had gathered together, so that they were trampling one another, he began to say to his disciples first, "Beware for yourselves of the leaven of the Pharisees, which is hypocrisy.

²⁵ Now large crowds were going along with him, and he turned around and* said to them, ²⁶ "If anyone comes to me and does not hate his own father and mother and wife and children and brothers and sisters, and furthermore, even his own life, _⌊he cannot be_⌋* my disciple.

¹⁸ So the Jews answered and said to him, "What sign do you show to us, because you are doing these things?"

³⁰ So they said to him, "Then what sign will you perform, so that we can see it* and believe you? What will you do?

⁴⁴ You are of your father the devil, and you want to do the desires of your father! That one was a murderer from the beginning, and does not stand firm in the truth, because truth is not in him. Whenever he speaks the lie, he speaks from his own nature,* because he is a liar and the father _⌊of lies_⌋.*

⁵¹ "You stiff-necked people and uncircumcised in hearts and in your* ears! You constantly resist the Holy Spirit! As your fathers did, so also do you! ⁵² Which of the prophets did your fathers not persecute? And they killed those who announced beforehand about the coming of the Righteous One, whose betrayers and murderers you have now become,
