⁵⁵ And when they* had kindled a fire in the middle of the courtyard and sat down together, Peter sat down among them.

¹ Blessed is the man who does not walk in the advice of the wicked; nor does he stand in the way of sinners; nor does he sit in the assembly of mockers.

⁴ I do not sit with deceitful people, nor will I go about with hypocrites. ⁵ I hate the crowd of evildoers, and with the wicked I will not sit.

³ Do not drag me away with the wicked or with the workers of evil, who speak of peace with their neighbors, while evil is in their heart.

⁶ Lay aside simplicity and live; walk in the way of understanding."

²⁰ Walk with the wise and be wise, but as for the companion of fools, he will suffer harm.

³ Then the chief priests and the elders of the people assembled in the palace of the high priest, who was named Caiaphas,

⁶⁹ Now Peter was sitting outside in the courtyard, and a female slave came up to him and* said, "You also were with Jesus the Galilean." ⁷⁰ But he denied it* in the presence of them all, saying, "I do not know what you mean!" ⁷¹ And when he* went out to the gateway, another female slave* saw him and said to those who were there, "This man was with Jesus the Nazarene." ⁷² And again he denied it* with an oath, "I do not know the man!" ⁷³ And after a little while those who were standing there came up and* said to Peter, "You really are one of them also, because even your accent _⌊reveals who you are_⌋."* ⁷⁴ Then he began to curse and to swear with an oath, "I do not know the man!" And immediately a rooster crowed. ⁷⁵ And Peter remembered the statement Jesus had said, "Before the rooster crows, you will deny me three times," and he went outside and* wept bitterly.

⁶⁶ And while* Peter was below in the courtyard, one of the female slaves of the high priest came up ⁶⁷ And when* she saw Peter warming himself, she looked intently at him and* said, "You also were with the Nazarene, Jesus." ⁶⁸ But he denied it,* saying, "I neither know nor understand what you mean!" And he went out into the gateway, and a rooster crowed.* ⁶⁹ And the female slave, when she* saw him, began to say again to the bystanders, "This man is one of them!" ⁷⁰ But he denied it* again. And after a little while, again the bystanders began to say* to Peter, "You really are one of them, because you also are a Galilean, and your accent _⌊shows it_⌋!"** ⁷¹ And he began to curse and to swear with an oath, "I do not know this man whom you are talking about!" ⁷² And immediately a rooster crowed for the second time. And Peter remembered the statement, how Jesus had said to him, "Before the rooster crows twice, you will deny me three times," and throwing himself down, he began to weep.*

⁴⁴ And being in anguish, he began praying* more fervently and his sweat became like drops of blood falling down to the ground.*

¹⁶ But Peter was standing by the door outside. So the other disciple who was known to the high priest went out and spoke to the doorkeeper and brought Peter in. ¹⁷ Then the female slave who was the doorkeeper said to Peter, "You are not also one of the disciples of this man, are you?"* He said, "I am not!" ¹⁸ (Now the slaves and the officers were standing there, having made a charcoal fire because it was cold, and they were warming themselves. And Peter was also standing there with them and warming himself.)

²⁵ Now Simon Peter was standing there and warming himself. So they said to him, "You are not also one of his disciples, are you?"* He denied it* and said, "I am not!" ²⁶ One of the slaves of the high priest, who was related to the one whose ear Peter had cut off, said, "Did I not see you in the garden with him?" ²⁷ So Peter denied it* again, and immediately a rooster crowed.

³³ Do not be deceived! "Bad company corrupts good morals."*
