¹ After he had finished all his statements in the hearing of the people, he entered into Capernaum. ² Now a certain centurion's slave, who was esteemed by him, _⌊was sick_⌋* and* was about to die. ³ So when he* heard about Jesus, he sent Jewish elders to him, asking him that he would come and* cure his slave. ⁴ And when they* came to Jesus, they began imploring* him earnestly, saying, "He is worthy that you grant this for him, ⁵ because he loves our nation and he himself built the synagogue for us." ⁶ So Jesus went with them. Now by this time he was not far away from the house, and* the centurion sent friends, saying to him, "Lord, do not trouble yourself, for I am not worthy that you should come in under my roof. ⁷ For this reason neither did I consider myself worthy to come to you. But say the word and my slave must be healed. ⁸ For I also am a man placed under authority, who has soldiers under me, and I say to this one, 'Go!' and he goes, and to another one, 'Come!' and he comes, and to my slave, 'Do this!' and he does it."* ⁹ And when* Jesus heard these things, he marveled at him, and turning around to the crowd that was following him, he said, "I tell you, not even in Israel have I found such great faith!" ¹⁰ And when they* returned to the house, those who had been sent found the slave healthy. ¹¹ And it happened that on the next day he went to a town called Nain, and his disciples and a large crowd went with him. ¹² And as he approached the gate of the town, behold, a man who had died was being carried out, his mother's only son, and she was a widow. And a large crowd from the town was with her. ¹³ And when* the Lord saw her, he had compassion for her and said to her, "Do not weep!" ¹⁴ And he came up and* touched the bier, and those who were carrying it* stopped. And he said, "Young man, I say to you, get up!" ¹⁵ And the dead man sat up and began to speak, and he gave him to his mother. ¹⁶ And fear seized them all, and they began to glorify* God, saying, "A great prophet has appeared among us!" and "God has visited to help his people!" ¹⁷ And this report about him went out in the whole of Judea and in all the surrounding region. ¹⁸ And his disciples reported to John about all these things. And summoning a certain two of his disciples, John ¹⁹ sent them* to the Lord,* saying, "Are you the one who is to come, or should we look for another?" ²⁰ And when* the men came to him, they said, "John the Baptist sent us to you, saying, 'Are you the one who is to come, or should we look for another?'" ²¹ In that hour he healed many people of diseases and suffering and evil spirits, and he granted sight to many blind people. ²² And he answered and* said to them, "Go and* tell John what you have seen and heard: the blind receive sight, the lame walk, lepers are cleansed, the deaf hear;* the dead are raised, the poor have good news announced to them.* ²³ And whoever is not offended by me is blessed." ²⁴ And when* the messengers of John had departed, he began to speak to the crowds concerning John: "What did you go out into the wilderness to see? A reed shaken by the wind? ²⁵ But what did you go out to see? A man dressed in soft clothing? Behold, those who are in splendid clothing and luxury are in the royal palaces. ²⁶ But what did you go out to see? A prophet? Yes, I tell you, and even more than a prophet! ²⁷ It is this man about whom it is written:
'Behold, I am sending my messenger before your face, who will prepare your way before you.'* ²⁸ I tell you, there is no one greater among those born of women than John, but the one who is least in the kingdom of God is greater than he. ²⁹ (And all the people, when they* heard this*—even the tax collectors—affirmed the righteousness of God, because they* had been baptized with the baptism of John, ³⁰ but the Pharisees and the legal experts rejected the purpose of God for themselves, because they* had not been baptized by him.) ³¹ "To what then shall I compare the people of this generation, and what are they like? ³² They are like children sitting in the marketplace and calling out to one another, who say,
'We played the flute for you and you did not dance; we sang a lament and you did not weep.' ³³ For John the Baptist has come not eating bread or drinking wine, and you say, 'He has a demon!' ³⁴ The Son of Man has come eating and drinking, and you say, 'Behold, a man who is a glutton and a drunkard, a friend of tax collectors and sinners!' ³⁵ And wisdom is vindicated by all her children." ³⁶ Now one of the Pharisees asked him to eat with him, and he entered into the house of the Pharisee and* reclined at the table. ³⁷ And behold, a woman in the town who was a sinner, when she* learned that he was dining in the Pharisee's house, brought an alabaster flask of perfumed oil, ³⁸ and standing behind him at his feet weeping, she began to wet his feet with her tears and was wiping them* with the hair of her head and was kissing his feet and anointing them* with the perfumed oil. ³⁹ Now when* the Pharisee who invited him saw this,* he spoke to himself, saying, "If this man were a prophet, he would have known who and what kind of woman this is who is touching him, that she is a sinner." ⁴⁰ And Jesus answered and* said to him, "Simon, I have something to say to you." And he said, "Teacher, say it."* ⁴¹ "There were two debtors who owed a certain creditor. One owed five hundred denarii and the other fifty. ⁴² When* they were not able to repay him,* he forgave the debts* of both. Now which of them will love him more?" ⁴³ Simon answered and* said, "I suppose that it is the one to whom he forgave more." And he said to him, "You have judged correctly." ⁴⁴ And turning toward the woman, he said to Simon, "Do you see this woman? I entered into your house. You did not give me water for my feet, but she wet my feet with her tears and wiped them* with her hair. ⁴⁵ You did not give me a kiss, but from the time I entered, she has not stopped kissing my feet. ⁴⁶ You did not anoint my head with olive oil, but she anointed my feet with perfumed oil. ⁴⁷ _⌊For this reason_⌋* I tell you, her sins—which were many—have been forgiven, for she loved much. But the one to whom little is forgiven loves little." ⁴⁸ And he said to her, "Your sins are forgiven." ⁴⁹ And those who were reclining at the table with him began to say among themselves, "Who is this who even forgives sins?" ⁵⁰ And he said to the woman, "Your faith has saved you. Go in peace."

²⁸ And it happened when Jesus finished these words the crowds were amazed at his teaching, ²⁹ because he was teaching them like one who had authority, and not like their scribes.

⁵ Now when* he entered Capernaum, a centurion approached him, appealing to him ⁶ and saying, "Lord, my slave* is lying paralyzed in my* house, terribly tormented!" ⁷ And he said to him, "I will come and* heal him." ⁸ And the centurion answered and* said, "Lord, I am not worthy that you should come in under my roof. But only say the word and my slave will be healed. ⁹ For I also am a man under authority who has soldiers under me, and I say to this one, 'Go!' and he goes, and to another one, 'Come!' and he comes, and to my slave, 'Do this!' and he does it*." ¹⁰ Now when* Jesus heard this,* he was astonished, and said to those who were following him,* "Truly I say to you, I have found such great faith with no one in Israel. ¹¹ But I say to you that many will come from east and west and _⌊be seated at the banquet_⌋* with Abraham and Isaac and Jacob in the kingdom of heaven. ¹² But the sons of the kingdom will be thrown out into the outer darkness. In that place there will be weeping and gnashing of teeth!" ¹³ And Jesus said to the centurion, "Go, as you have believed it will be done for you." And the slave* was healed at that hour.

² And Abraham said to his servant, the oldest of his house, who had charge of all he had, "Please put your hand under my thigh ³ that I may make you swear by Yahweh, the God of heaven and the God of earth, that you will not take a wife for my son from the daughters of the Canaanites in whose midst I am dwelling, ⁴ but that you will go to my land and to my family, and take a wife for my son, for Isaac." ⁵ And the servant said to him, "Perhaps the woman will not be willing _⌊to follow_⌋* me to this land—must I then return your son to the land from whence you came?" ⁶ Abraham said to him, "_⌊You must take care_⌋* that you do not return my son there. ⁷ Yahweh, the God of heaven who took me from the house of my father and from the land of my family, and who spoke to me and swore to me, saying, 'to your offspring I will give this land,' he will send his angel before you, and you shall take a wife for my son from there. ⁸ And if the woman is not willing _⌊to follow_⌋* you, then you shall be released from this oath of mine—only you must not return my son there." ⁹ Then the servant put his hand under the thigh of Abraham his master, and he swore to him concerning this matter. ¹⁰ And the servant took ten camels from his master's camels, and he went with all kinds of his master's good things in his hand. And he arose and went to Aram-Naharaim, to the city of Nahor. ¹¹ And he made the camels kneel outside the city at the well of water, at the time of evening, toward the time the women went out to draw water. ¹² And he said, "O Yahweh, God of my master Abraham, please grant me success today and show loyal love to my master Abraham. ¹³ Behold, I am standing by the spring of water, and the daughters of the men of the city are going out to draw water. ¹⁴ And let it be that the girl to whom I shall say, 'Please, offer your jar that I may drink' and who says, 'Drink—and I will also water your camels,' she is the one you have chosen for your servant, for Isaac. By her I will know that you have shown loyal love to my master."

²⁷ And he said, "Blessed be Yahweh, God of my master Abraham, who has not withheld* his loyal love and his faithfulness from my master. I was on the way and Yahweh led me to the house of my master's brother."

³⁵ Now Yahweh has blessed my master exceedingly, and he has become great. He has given to him sheep and cattle, silver and gold, male slaves and female slaves, and camels and donkeys. ³⁶ And Sarah, the wife of my master, has borne a son to my master after her old age. And he* has given to him all that he has. ³⁷ And my master made me swear, saying, 'Do not take a wife for my son from the daughters of the Canaanites in whose land I am living. ³⁸ But you shall go to the house of my father, and to my family, and you shall take a wife for my son.' ³⁹ And I said to my master, 'Perhaps the woman will not _⌊follow_⌋* me.' ⁴⁰ And he said to me, 'Yahweh, before whom I have walked, shall send his angel with you and will make your journey successful. And you shall take a wife for my son from my family, and from the house of my father. ⁴¹ Then you shall be released from my oath, when you come to my family. And if they will not give a woman to you, then you will be released from my oath.' ⁴² Then today I came to the spring, and I said, 'O Yahweh, God of my master Abraham, _⌊if you would please make my journey successful_⌋,* upon which I am going. ⁴³ Behold, I am standing by the spring of water. Let it be that the young woman who comes out to draw water and to whom I say, "Please give me a little water to drink from your jar," ⁴⁴ let her say to me, "Drink; I will also draw water for your camels," she is the woman whom Yahweh has appointed for the son of my master.' ⁴⁵ I had not yet finished speaking to myself* when, behold, Rebekah was coming out with* her jar on her shoulder. And she went down to the spring and drew water. And I said to her, 'Please give me a drink.' ⁴⁶ And she hastened and let down her jar _⌊from her shoulder_⌋* and said, 'Drink, and I will give a drink to your camels also.' Then I drank and she gave a drink to the camels also. ⁴⁷ Then I asked her and said, 'Whose daughter are you?' And she said, 'The daughter of Bethuel, son of Nahor, whom Milcah bore to him.' And I put the ring on her nose and the bracelets on her arms. ⁴⁸ And I knelt down and worshiped Yahweh, and I praised Yahweh, the God of my master Abraham, who led me on the right way, to take the daughter of the brother of my master for his son. ⁴⁹ So now, _⌊if you are going to deal loyally and truly_⌋* with my master, tell me. And if not, tell me, so that I may turn to the right or to the left."*

⁸ And Deborah, the nurse of Rebekah, died. And she was buried below Bethel, under the oak. And its name was called Allon-Bacuth.*

⁴ And Joseph found favor in his eyes and he served him. Then he appointed him* over his house and all that he owned he put into his hand. ⁵ And it happened that from the time he appointed him over his house and over all that he had, Yahweh blessed the house of the Egyptian on account of Joseph. And the blessing of Yahweh was upon all that he had in the house and in the field. ⁶ And he left all that he had in the hand of Joseph, and _⌊he did not worry about anything_⌋* except the food that he ate. Now Joseph was _⌊well built and handsome_⌋.*

² When the Arameans went on a raid, they brought back a young girl from the land of Israel, and _⌊she came into the service of_⌋* the wife of Naaman. ³ She said to her mistress, "If only my lord would come before the prophet who is in Samaria; then _⌊he would cure his skin disease_⌋."*

⁵ "If I have walked with falseness, and my foot has hastened to deceit,

²¹ He who pampers his servant from childhood, _⌊arrogance will be his end_⌋.*

⁵⁴ Now the centurion and those with him who were guarding Jesus, when they* saw the earthquake and the things that took place, were extremely frightened, saying, "Truly this man was God's Son!"

⁴² because _⌊he had_⌋* an only daughter, about twelve years old, and she was dying.
Now as he was going, the crowds were pressing against him.

⁴⁷ Now when* the centurion saw what had happened, he began to praise* God, saying, "Certainly this man was righteous!"

⁴⁶ Now he came again to Cana in Galilee, where he had made the water wine. And there was at Capernaum a certain royal official whose son was sick. ⁴⁷ This man, when he* heard that Jesus had come from Judea into Galilee, went to him and asked that he come down and heal his son, for he was about to die.

² (Now it was Mary who anointed the Lord with perfumed oil and wiped his feet with her hair, whose brother Lazarus was sick.) ³ So the sisters sent word* to him, saying, "Lord, behold, the one whom you love is sick."

¹ Now there was a certain man in Caesarea _⌊named_⌋* Cornelius, a centurion of what was called the Italian Cohort,

⁷ And when the angel who spoke to him departed, he summoned two of the household slaves and a devout soldier from those who attended him,

²⁶ And when* the centurion heard this,* he went to the military tribune and* reported it,* saying, "What are you about to do? For this man is a Roman citizen!"

¹⁷ So Paul called one of the centurions and* said, "Bring this young man to the military tribune, because he has something to report to him."

¹ And when it was decided that we would sail away to Italy, they handed over Paul and some other prisoners to a centurion _⌊named_⌋* Julius of the Augustan* Cohort.

³ And on the next day, we put in at Sidon. And Julius, treating Paul kindly, allowed him* to go to his* friends _⌊to be cared for_⌋.*

⁴³ but the centurion, because he* wanted to save Paul, prevented them _⌊from doing what they intended_⌋,* and gave orders that those who were able to swim should jump in first to get to the land,

²² Slaves, obey your _⌊human_⌋* masters in everything, not _⌊while being watched_⌋*, as people pleasers, but with sincerity of heart, fearing the Lord.

⁵ Now when* he entered Capernaum, a centurion approached him, appealing to him

⁴¹ And behold, a man _⌊who was named_⌋* Jairus came, and this man was a ruler of the synagogue. And he fell down at the feet of Jesus and* began imploring* him to come to his house,

³⁸ And behold, a man from the crowd cried out, saying, "Teacher, I beg you to look with concern on my son, because he is my only son!

⁴⁷ This man, when he* heard that Jesus had come from Judea into Galilee, went to him and asked that he come down and heal his son, for he was about to die.

¹⁰ I am appealing to you concerning my child whom I became the father of during my imprisonment, Onesimus.

¹¹ And into whatever town or village you enter, inquire who in it is worthy, and stay there until you depart.

¹³ And if the house is worthy, let your peace come upon it, but if it is not worthy, let your peace return to you.

³⁷ The one who loves father or mother more than me is not worthy of me, and the one who loves son or daughter more than me is not worthy of me. ³⁸ And whoever does not take up his cross and follow me is not worthy of me.

⁶ So Jesus went with them. Now by this time he was not far away from the house, and* the centurion sent friends, saying to him, "Lord, do not trouble yourself, for I am not worthy that you should come in under my roof. ⁷ For this reason neither did I consider myself worthy to come to you. But say the word and my slave must be healed.

³⁵ but those who are considered worthy to attain to that age and to the resurrection from the dead neither marry nor are given in marriage,

⁴ But you have a few _⌊people_⌋* in Sardis who have not defiled their clothing, and they will walk with me in white, because they are worthy.

¹ Hiram king of Tyre sent his servants to Solomon when he heard that they had anointed him as king in place of his father, for Hiram had always been a friend for David.

³ And moreover, with respect to my provisions for the house of my God I have a treasure of gold and silver that I have given to the house of my God above all that I have provided for the holy house: ⁴ three thousand talents of gold from the gold of Ophir and seven thousand talents of refined silver to overlay the walls of the houses, ⁵ gold for the golden things and silver for the silver things, for all the work by the hand of skilled craftsmen. Now who will offer willingly, _⌊consecrating himself_⌋* today to Yahweh?" ⁶ Then the commanders of the _⌊families_⌋,* the commanders of the tribes of Israel, and the commanders of thousands and hundreds, and the commanders of the work of the king offered themselves willingly. ⁷ And they gave for the service of the house of God five thousand talents and ten thousand darics of gold, ten thousand talents of silver, eighteen thousand talents of bronze, and one hundred thousand talents of iron. ⁸ And whoever had precious stones gave them to the treasury of the house of Yahweh under the authority* of Jehiel the Gershonite. ⁹ And the people rejoiced over their freewill offering, for with a whole heart they had willingly offered to Yahweh, and King David also rejoiced with great joy.

¹¹ Then Huram* king of Tyre answered in a letter, and he sent word to Solomon: "Because Yahweh loves his people, he has made you king over them." ¹² Then Huram* said, "Blessed be Yahweh, the God of Israel, who has made the heavens and the earth, who has given to King David a wise son knowing discretion and understanding, who will build for Yahweh a house and a royal palace for himself.

²⁷ Blessed be Yahweh the God of our ancestors,* who put this in the heart of the king to glorify the house of Yahweh in Jerusalem ²⁸ and who extended to me loyal love before the king and his counselors, and before all of the mighty officials of the king. I took courage, for the hand of Yahweh my God was upon me, and I gathered leaders from Israel to go up with me.

⁶ For in Christ Jesus neither circumcision counts for anything nor uncircumcision, but faith working through love.

¹⁴ We know that we have passed over from death to life because we love the brothers. The one who does not love remains in death.

¹⁸ Little children, let us not love with word or with tongue, but in deed and truth. ¹⁹ By this* we know that we are of the truth and will convince our heart before him,

¹ Everyone who believes that Jesus is the Christ has been fathered by God, and everyone who loves _⌊the father_⌋* also loves the child fathered by him. ² By this we know that we love the children of God: whenever we love God and keep his commandments. ³ For this is the love of God: that we keep his commandments. And his commandments are not burdensome,

¹⁰ _⌊I am not worthy_⌋* of all the loyal love and all the faithfulness that you have shown* your servant, for with only my staff I crossed this Jordan, and now I have become two camps.

²³ The pride of a person will bring him humiliation, and the lowly of spirit will obtain honor.

¹¹ I baptize you with water for repentance, but the one who comes after me is more powerful than I am, whose sandals I am not worthy to carry. He will baptize you with the Holy Spirit and fire.

²⁶ Truly I say to you, you will never come out of there until you have paid back the last penny! ²⁷ "You have heard that it was said, 'Do not commit adultery.'*

²⁸ just as the Son of Man did not come to be served, but to serve, and to give his life as a ransom for many."

²⁴ And he went with him, and a large crowd was following him and pressing around him.

⁸ And when he* saw it,* Simon Peter fell down at Jesus' knees, saying, "Depart from me, Lord, because I am _⌊a sinful man_⌋!"*

⁴ And when they* came to Jesus, they began imploring* him earnestly, saying, "He is worthy that you grant this for him,

⁴⁹ While* he was still speaking, someone came from the synagogue ruler's house, saying, "Your daughter is dead! Trouble the Teacher no longer!"

¹⁹ I am no longer worthy to be called your son! Make me like one of your hired workers.' ²⁰ And he set out and* came to his own father. But while* he was still a long way away, his father saw him and had compassion, and ran _⌊and embraced him_⌋* and kissed him. ²¹ And his* son said to him, 'Father, I have sinned against heaven and _⌊in your sight_⌋!* I am no longer worthy to be called your son!'

³⁸ Jesus of Nazareth—how God anointed him with the Holy Spirit and with power, who went about doing good and healing all who were oppressed by the devil, because God was with him.

⁶ But he gives greater grace. Therefore it says,
"God opposes the proud, but gives grace to the humble."*

¹⁰ Humble yourselves before the Lord, and he will exalt you.

²⁶ And he said, "If you carefully listen to the voice of Yahweh your God and you do what is right in his eyes and give heed to his commands and you keep all his rules, then I will not bring about on you any of the diseases* that I brought about on Egypt, because I am Yahweh your healer.

³⁹ See, now, that I, even I am he, and there is not a god besides me; I put to death and I give life; I wound and I heal; there is not one who delivers from my hand!

⁶ Yahweh kills and restores alive, he brings down to Sheol* and raises up.

⁹ For _⌊he himself spoke_⌋* and it came to pass. _⌊He himself commanded_⌋* and it stood firm.

²⁰ He sent his word and healed them, and he delivered them from their pits.*

²⁷ And they were all amazed, so that they began to discuss with one another, saying, "What is this? A new teaching with authority! He even commands the unclean spirits and they obey him."

³⁶ And amazement came upon them all, and they began to talk* with one another, saying, "What word* is this? For he commands the unclean spirits with authority and power, and they come out!"

¹³ And extending his* hand he touched him, saying, "I am willing; be clean." And immediately the leprosy went away from him.

⁷ And when the angel who spoke to him departed, he summoned two of the household slaves and a devout soldier from those who attended him, ⁸ and after he* had explained everything to them, he sent them to Joppa.

²⁵ But when they had stretched him out for the lash,* Paul said to the centurion standing there, "Is it permitted for you to flog a man who is a Roman citizen and uncondemned?" ²⁶ And when* the centurion heard this,* he went to the military tribune and* reported it,* saying, "What are you about to do? For this man is a Roman citizen!"

²³ And he summoned two of the centurions and* said, "Make ready from the third hour of the night two hundred soldiers and seventy horsemen and two hundred spearmen,* in order that they may proceed as far as Caesarea.

Greetings!

²³ He ordered* the centurion for him to be guarded and to have some freedom, and in no way to prevent any of his own people* from serving him.

²⁶ I do not have anything definite to write to my* lord about _⌊him_⌋.* Therefore I have brought him before you all*—and especially before you, King Agrippa—so that after* this preliminary hearing has taken place, I may have something to write.

²² Slaves, obey your _⌊human_⌋* masters in everything, not _⌊while being watched_⌋*, as people pleasers, but with sincerity of heart, fearing the Lord.

¹ All those who are under the yoke as slaves must regard their own masters as worthy of all honor, lest the name of God and the teaching be slandered. ² And those who have believing masters must not look down on them because they are brothers, but rather they must serve, because those who benefit by their service are believers and dearly loved.

¹⁹ He declares his word to Jacob, his statutes and his ordinances to Israel. ²⁰ He has not done so for any nation, and they do not know his ordinances. Praise Yah.*

¹⁰ Now when* Jesus heard this,* he was astonished, and said to those who were following him,* "Truly I say to you, I have found such great faith with no one in Israel.

³³ And after* the demon had been expelled, the one who had been mute spoke, and the crowds were astonished, saying, "_⌊This has never been seen before_⌋* in Israel!"

²⁸ Then Jesus answered and said to her, "O woman, your faith is great! Let it be done for you as you want." And her daughter was healed from that hour.

¹ Therefore, what is the advantage of the Jew, or what is the use of circumcision? ² Much in every way. For first, that they were entrusted with the oracles of God. ³ _⌊What is the result_⌋* if some refused to believe? Their unbelief will not nullify the faithfulness of God, will it?

⁴ who are Israelites, to whom belong the adoption, and the glory, and the covenants, and the giving of the law, and the temple service, and the promises, ⁵ to whom belong the patriarchs, and from whom is the Christ according to human descent, who is God over all, blessed _⌊forever_⌋*! Amen.

¹³ And Jesus said to the centurion, "Go, as you have believed it will be done for you." And the slave* was healed at that hour.

²³ But Jesus said to him, "If you are able! All things are possible for the one who believes!"

⁵⁰ Jesus said to him, "Go, your son will live." The man believed the word that Jesus spoke to him, and he departed. ⁵¹ Now as* he was going down, his slaves met him, saying that his child was alive. ⁵² So he inquired from them the hour at which he had gotten better. Then they said to him, "Yesterday at the seventh hour the fever left him." ⁵³ So the father knew that it was that* same hour at which Jesus said to him, "Your son will live," and he himself believed, and his whole household.

² And he said, "Take your son, your only child, Isaac, whom you love, and go to the land of Moriah, and offer him there as a burnt offering on one of the mountains where* I will tell you."

¹² And he said, "Do not stretch out your hand against the boy; do not do anything to him. For now I know that you are _⌊one who fears_⌋* God, since you have not withheld your son, your only child, from me."

⁷ And look, all of the family has risen up against your servant, and they said, 'Give up the one who struck his brother, that we may kill him in exchange for the life of his brother whom he murdered. We will also wipe out the heir,' and so they would put out my embers which remain, by not preserving for my husband a name and a remnant on the face of the earth."

⁹ "Get up and go to Zarephath which belongs to Sidon and stay there. Look, I have commanded a woman there, a widow, to sustain you."

¹² She said, "_⌊As Yahweh your God lives_⌋,* surely I do not have a cake, _⌊but only a handful of flour_⌋* in the jar and a little olive oil in the jug. Here I am gathering a few pieces of wood, and I will go and prepare it for me and my son, that we might eat it and die."

¹⁸ She said to Elijah, "_⌊What do you have against me_⌋,* O man of God, that you have come to me to make known my guilt and to cause my son to die?"

²³ Elijah then took the child and brought him down from the upper room to the house and gave him to his mother. Elijah said, "Look, your son is alive."

¹⁶ And he said, "At this time _⌊next spring_⌋,* you will be embracing a son." She said, "No, my lord, O man of God! You must not tell a lie to your servant!"

²⁰ So they carried him and brought him to his mother; he sat on her lap until noon and then died.

¹³ The blessing of the wretched came upon me, and I caused the widow's heart to sing for joy.

¹⁰ " 'I will pour on the house of David and on the inhabitants* of Jerusalem a spirit of grace and supplication, and they will look to me whom they pierced, and they shall mourn over him, as one wails over an only child, and they will grieve bitterly over him as one grieves bitterly over a firstborn.

⁵² And they were all weeping and mourning for her, but he said, "Do not weep! For she is not dead, but is sleeping."

¹⁹ So many of the Jews came to Martha and Mary in order to console them concerning their* brother.)

³⁹ So Peter got up and* accompanied them. When he* arrived, they brought him* up to the upstairs room, and all the widows came to him, weeping and showing him* tunics and other clothing that Dorcas used to make while she* was with them.

⁴¹ And he gave her his hand and* raised her up. And he called the saints and the widows and* presented her alive.

⁴ But if any widow has children or grandchildren, they must learn to show profound respect for their own household first, and to pay back recompense to their parents, for this is pleasing in the sight of God. ⁵ But the widow who is one truly, and is left alone, has put her hope in God and continues in her petitions and prayers night and day.

²⁷ Pure and undefiled religion in the sight of our* God and Father is this: to look after orphans and widows in their affliction, and to keep oneself unstained by the world.

¹⁶ So they removed the foreign gods from their midst and served Yahweh; and _⌊he could no longer bear_⌋* the misery of Israel.

⁵ For you, O Lord, are good and forgiving, and abundant in loyal love* for all who call to you.

¹⁵ But you, O Lord, are a compassionate and gracious God, _⌊slow to anger_⌋* and abundant in loyal love and faithfulness.

¹³ As a father pities* his children, so Yahweh pities* those who fear him.

⁹ In all their distress, _⌊there was no distress_⌋,* and the messenger of his _⌊presence_⌋* saved them, in his love and compassion he himself redeemed them, and he lifted them up, and he supported them all the days of old.

¹⁵ Thus says Yahweh, "A voice is heard in Ramah, lamentation, the weeping of bitterness. Rachel is weeping for her children; she refuses to be comforted because of her children, for they are no more." ¹⁶ Thus says Yahweh:
"Restrain your voice from weeping, and your eyes from tears, for there is a reward for your work," _⌊declares_⌋* Yahweh, "and they will return from the land of the enemy.

²⁰ Is Ephraim my dear son, or the child of my delight? For _⌊as often as_⌋* I have earnestly spoken against him, I still remember him. _⌊Therefore_⌋* my bowels are turbulent for him, surely I will have compassion on him," _⌊declares_⌋* Yahweh.

³² For even though he causes grief he has compassion according to the greatness of his royal love. ³³ He does not _⌊afflict willingly_⌋,* or grieve _⌊anyone_⌋.*

² "I have compassion on the crowd, because they have remained with me three days already and do not have anything to eat.

¹⁹ sent them* to the Lord,* saying, "Are you the one who is to come, or should we look for another?"

¹ And after these things, the Lord also* appointed seventy-two others and sent them out two by two before _⌊him_⌋* into every town and place where he was about to go.

¹⁵ But the Lord answered and said to him, "Hypocrites! Does not each one of you untie his ox or his* donkey from the feeding trough on the Sabbath and lead it* away to water it?*

⁵ And the apostles said to the Lord, "Increase our faith!"

⁶¹ And the Lord turned around and* looked intently at Peter. And Peter remembered the word of the Lord,* how he said to him, "Before the rooster crows today, you will deny me three times."

³⁴ saying, "The Lord has really been raised, and has appeared to Simon!"

² (Now it was Mary who anointed the Lord with perfumed oil and wiped his feet with her hair, whose brother Lazarus was sick.)

³³ Then Jesus, when he saw her weeping and the Jews who came with her weeping, was deeply moved in spirit and was troubled within himself. ³⁴ And he said, "Where have you laid him?" They said to him, "Lord, come and see." ³⁵ Jesus wept.

¹³ And they said to her, "Woman, why are you weeping?" She said to them, "They have taken away my Lord, and I do not know where they have put him!"

¹⁵ Jesus said to her, "Woman, why are you weeping? Who are you looking for?" She thought that it was the gardener, and* said to him, "Sir, if you have carried him away, tell me where you have put him, and I will take him."

³⁰ and those who weep as if they do not weep, and those who rejoice as if they do not rejoice, and those who buy as if they do not possess,

¹³ Now we do not want you to be ignorant, brothers, concerning those who have fallen asleep, so that you will not grieve as also the rest, who have no hope.

¹⁷ Therefore he was obligated to be made like his brothers in all respects, in order that he could become a merciful and faithful high priest in the things relating to God, in order to make atonement for the sins of the people.

¹⁵ For we do not have a high priest who is not able to sympathize with our weaknesses, but who has been tempted in all things in the same way, without sin.

²¹ He stretched himself out on the child three times and called to Yahweh and said, "O Yahweh my God, please let the life of this child return within him."

¹² _⌊so_⌋* a man lies down, and he does not arise. _⌊Until the heavens are no more_⌋,* they will not awaken, and they will not be roused out of their sleep.

¹⁴ If a man dies, will he live again? All the days of my compulsory service I will wait, until the coming of my relief.

¹⁹ Your dead shall live; _⌊their corpses_⌋* shall rise. Wake up and sing for joy, dwellers of the dust, for your dew is _⌊celestial dew_⌋,* and the earth will give birth to dead spirits.*

³ And he said to me, "Son of man,* can these bones live?" And I said, "Lord Yahweh, you know." ⁴ And he said to me, "Prophesy to these bones, and you must say to them, to the dry bones, 'Hear the word of Yahweh! ⁵ Thus says the Lord Yahweh to these bones: "Look! I am bringing into you breath, and you will live! ⁶ And I will lay on you sinews, and I will let flesh come upon you, and I will cover you over with skin, and I will put breath into you, and you will live, and you will know that I am Yahweh." '" ⁷ And I prophesied _⌊just as_⌋* I had been commanded, and there was a sound at my prophesying, and look! A rattling, and they came together—the bones! Bone to its bone! ⁸ And I looked, and indeed, sinews were on them, and flesh went up,* and skin covered over* them _⌊upward_⌋,* but breath was not in them. ⁹ And he said to me, "Prophesy to the breath; prophesy, son of man,* and you must say to the breath, 'Thus says the Lord Yahweh _⌊from the four winds_⌋,* "Come, O spirit and breath, on these dead ones, so that they may live!" '" ¹⁰ And I prophesied _⌊as_⌋* he commanded me, and the breath came into them, and they became alive, and they stood on their feet, a very, very large group.

⁵⁴ But he took her hand and* called, saying, "Child, get up." ⁵⁵ And her spirit returned, and she got up immediately, and he ordered something* to be given to her to eat.

²¹ For just as the Father raises the dead and makes them* alive, thus also the Son makes alive whomever he wishes.

²⁵ "Truly, truly I say to you, that an hour is coming—and now is here—when the dead will hear the voice of the Son of God, and the ones who hear will live.

²⁸ "Do not be astonished at this, because an hour is coming in which all those in the tombs will hear his voice ²⁹ and they will come out—those who have done good things to a resurrection of life, but those who have practiced evil things to a resurrection of judgment.

²⁵ Jesus said to her, "I am the resurrection and the life. The one who believes in me, even if he dies, will live,

⁴³ And when he* had said these things, he cried out with a loud voice, "Lazarus, come out!" ⁴⁴ The one who had died came out, his* feet and his* hands bound with strips of cloth, and his face wrapped with a facecloth. Jesus said to them, "Untie him and let him go."

⁴⁰ But Peter sent them all outside, and, falling to his* knees, he prayed. And turning toward the body, he said, "Tabitha, get up!" And she opened her eyes, and when she* saw Peter, she sat up. ⁴¹ And he gave her his hand and* raised her up. And he called the saints and the widows and* presented her alive.

¹⁷ (just as it is written, "I have made you the father of many nations")* before God, in whom he believed, the one who makes the dead alive and who calls the things that are not as though they are,

¹² For it is shameful even to speak about the things being done by them in secret,

²³ Elijah then took the child and brought him down from the upper room to the house and gave him to his mother. Elijah said, "Look, your son is alive." ²⁴ Then the woman said to Elijah, "Now this I know, that you are a man of God and the word of Yahweh in your mouth is truth."

³² When Elisha came to the house, here was the boy dead, lying on his bed. ³³ He went and closed the door behind the two of them and prayed to Yahweh. ³⁴ Then he went up and lay upon the child and put his mouth on his mouth, his eyes on his eyes, and his palms on his palms. As he bent down over him, the flesh of the boy became warm. ³⁵ He returned and went _⌊to and fro_⌋* in the house one time, then he went up and bent over him. Then the boy sneezed seven times and opened his eyes. ³⁶ Elisha called to Gehazi and said, "Call this Shunammite." So he called her and she came to him; then he said, "Pick up your son." ³⁷ She came and fell at his feet and bowed down to the ground; then she picked up her son and went out.

²¹ And it happened that they were burying a man; suddenly they saw the marauding band, so they threw the man in the grave of Elisha. As he went in, the man touched the bones of Elisha, and became alive and got up on his feet!

³¹ And the people believed when they heard that Yahweh had attended to the _⌊Israelites_⌋* and that he had seen their misery, and they knelt down and they worshiped.

⁹ You care for* the land* and water it; you greatly enrich it. The stream of God is filled with waters. You provide their grain, for so you have established it.

⁴ Remember me, O Yahweh, when you show favor to your people. Look after me when you deliver, ⁵ that I may see the good done your chosen ones, to be glad in the joy of your nation, to glory together with your inheritance.

⁹ And it will be to me a name of jubilation, a praise, and a glory before all the nations of the earth, who will hear all the good that I will do for them, and they will fear,* and they will tremble because of all the good, and because of all the prosperity that I will provide for it.'

⁸ But when* the crowds saw this,* they were afraid and glorified God who had given such authority to men.

³¹ So then the crowd was astonished when they* saw the mute speaking, the crippled healthy, and the lame walking, and the blind seeing, and they praised the God of Israel.

¹¹ And the crowds were saying, "This is the prophet Jesus from Nazareth of Galilee!"

⁸ And they departed quickly from the tomb with fear and great joy, and* ran to tell his disciples.

⁶⁵ And fear came on all those who lived near them, and in all the hill country of Judea all these events were discussed.

⁶⁸ "Blessed be the Lord, the God of Israel, because he has visited to help and _⌊has redeemed_⌋* his people,

²⁰ And the shepherds returned, glorifying and praising God for all that they had heard and seen, just as it had been told to them.

²⁶ And amazement seized them all, and they began to glorify* God. And they were filled with fear, saying, "We have seen wonderful things today!"

³⁹ Now when* the Pharisee who invited him saw this,* he spoke to himself, saying, "If this man were a prophet, he would have known who and what kind of woman this is who is touching him, that she is a sinner."

³⁷ And all the people of the surrounding region of the Gerasenes asked him to depart from them, because they had been seized with great fear. So he got into the boat and* returned.

¹⁹ And they answered and* said, "John the Baptist, but others, Elijah, and others, that one of the ancient prophets has risen."

⁴⁴ And they will raze you to the ground, you and your children within you, and will not leave a stone upon a stone within you, _⌊because_⌋* you did not recognize the time of your visitation."

¹⁹ And he said to them, "What things?" So they said to him, "The things concerning Jesus the Nazarene, a man who was a prophet, powerful in deed and word before God and all the people,

²¹ And they asked him, "Then who are you? Are you Elijah?" And he said, "I am not!" "Are you the Prophet?"* And he answered, "No!"

²⁵ And they asked him and said to him, "Why then are you baptizing, if you are not the Christ, nor Elijah, nor the Prophet?"

¹⁹ The woman said to him, "Sir, I see that you are a prophet.

¹⁴ Now when* the people saw the sign that he performed, they began to say,* "This one is truly the Prophet who is to come into the world!"

⁴⁰ Then, when they* heard these words, some from the crowd began to say,* "This man is truly the Prophet!" ⁴¹ Others were saying, "This man is the Christ!" But others were saying, "No, for the Christ does not come from Galilee, does he?*

¹⁷ So they said to the blind man again, "What do you say about him, because he opened your eyes?" And he said, "He is a prophet."

²² Moses said, 'The Lord God* will raise up for you a prophet like me from your brothers. You will listen to him in everything that he says to you.* ²³ And it will be that every soul who does not listen to that prophet will be destroyed utterly from the people.'*

⁵ And when* Ananias heard these words, he fell down and* died. And great fear came on all those who heard about it.*

¹¹ And great fear came on the whole church and on all who heard about these things. ¹² Now many signs and wonders were being performed among the people through the hands of the apostles. And they were all together* in Solomon's Portico. ¹³ And none of the rest dared to join them, but the people spoke highly of them.

³⁷ "This is the Moses who said to the sons of Israel, 'God will raise up for you a prophet like me from among your brothers.'*

²⁴ and they were glorifying God because of me.

²⁴ And a report about him went out _⌊throughout_⌋* Syria, and they brought to him all those _⌊who were sick_⌋* with various diseases and afflicted by torments, demon-possessed* and epileptics and paralytics, and he healed them.

²⁶ And this report went out into that whole region.

³¹ But they went out and* spread the report about him in that whole region.

²⁸ And the report about him then went out everywhere in the whole surrounding region of Galilee.

¹⁴ And King Herod heard it,* because his name had become known. And they were saying, "John, the one who baptizes, has been raised from the dead, and because of this these miraculous powers are at work in him."

¹⁴ And he came up and* touched the bier, and those who were carrying it* stopped. And he said, "Young man, I say to you, get up!"

² Now when* John* heard in prison the deeds of Christ, he sent word* by his disciples ³ and* said to him, "Are you the one who is to come, or should we look for another?" ⁴ And Jesus answered and* said to them, "Go and* tell John what you hear and see: ⁵ the blind receive sight and the lame walk, lepers are cleansed and the deaf hear, and the dead are raised, and the poor have good news announced to them.* ⁶ And whoever is not offended by me is blessed." ⁷ Now as* these were going away, Jesus began to speak to the crowds concerning John: "What did you go out into the wilderness to see? A reed shaken by the wind? ⁸ But what did you go out to see? A man dressed in soft clothing? Behold, those who wear soft clothing are in the houses of kings. ⁹ But why did you go out? To see a prophet?* Yes, I tell you, and even more than a prophet! ¹⁰ It is this man about whom it is written:
'Behold, I am sending my messenger before your face, who will prepare your way before you.'* ¹¹ Truly I say to you, among those born of women there has not arisen one greater than John the Baptist. But the one who is least in the kingdom of heaven is greater than he. ¹² But from the days of John the Baptist until now, the kingdom of heaven is treated violently, and the violent claim* it. ¹³ For all the prophets and the law prophesied until John, ¹⁴ and if you are willing to accept it,* he is Elijah, the one who is going to come. ¹⁵ The one who has ears, let him hear! ¹⁶ "But to what shall I compare this generation? It is like children sitting in the marketplaces who call out to one another, ¹⁷ saying,
'We played the flute for you and you did not dance; we sang a lament and you did not mourn.' ¹⁸ For John came neither eating nor drinking, and they say, 'He has a demon!' ¹⁹ The Son of Man came eating and drinking, and they say, 'Behold, a man who is a glutton and a drunkard, a friend of tax collectors and sinners!' But wisdom is vindicated by her deeds."*

²⁶ And they came to John and said to him, "Rabbi, he who was with you on the other side of the Jordan, about whom you testified—look, this one is baptizing, and all are coming to him!"

¹⁵ And I will put hostility between you and between the woman, and between your offspring* and between her offspring;* he will strike you on the head, and you will strike him on the heel."

¹⁸ All the nations of the earth will be blessed through your offspring, because you have listened to my voice."

¹⁰ The scepter shall not depart from Judah, nor the ruler's staff between his feet, until Shiloh comes. And to him shall be the obedience of nations.

¹⁵ "Yahweh your God will raise up for you a prophet like me from your midst, from your countrymen,* and to him you shall listen. ¹⁶ This is _⌊according to all that you asked_⌋* from Yahweh your God at Horeb, on the day of the assembly, _⌊saying_⌋,* '_⌊I do not want again to hear_⌋* the voice of Yahweh my God, and I do not want to see again this great fire, so that I may not die!' ¹⁷ And Yahweh said to me, 'They are right in what they have said. ¹⁸ I will raise up a prophet for them _⌊from among their countrymen_⌋* like you, and I will place* my words into his mouth, and he shall speak to them _⌊everything that I command him_⌋.*

¹ Then Joshua son of Nun secretly sent two men from Acacia Grove* as spies, saying, "Go, view the land, especially Jericho." So they went, and entered the house of a prostitute whose name was Rahab, and _⌊spent the night_⌋* there.

¹ Of David. A psalm.*
A declaration of Yahweh to my lord, "Sit at my right hand until I make your enemies your footstool." ² Yahweh will send out your mighty scepter from Zion; rule in the midst of your enemies. ³ Your people _⌊will volunteer_⌋* in the day of your power.* In holy splendor, from the womb of the dawn, you will have the dew of your youth.* ⁴ Yahweh has sworn and he will not change his mind, "You are a priest forever according to the manner of Melchizedek."

¹⁴ Therefore the Lord himself will give you* a sign. Look! the virgin* is with child and she is about to give birth to a son, and she shall call his name 'God with us.'

⁶ For a child has been born for us; a son has been given to us. And the dominion will be on his shoulder, and his name is called Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace. ⁷ _⌊His dominion will grow continually, and to peace there will be no end_⌋* on* the throne of David and over* his kingdom, to establish it* and sustain it with justice and righteousness now and forever. The zeal of Yahweh of hosts will do this.

¹ And a shoot will come out from the stump of Jesse, and a branch from its roots will bear fruit.

¹⁰ Look! The Lord Yahweh comes with _⌊strength_⌋,* and his arm rules for him. Look! His reward is with him, and his recompense _⌊in his presence_⌋.* ¹¹ He will feed his flock like a shepherd; he will gather the lambs in his arm, and he will carry them in his bosom; he will lead those who nurse.

²⁰ "And a redeemer will come to Zion, to those in Jacob who turn away from transgression,"
_⌊declares_⌋* Yahweh. ²¹ "And as for me, this is my covenant with them, says Yahweh:
my spirit that is upon you, and my words that I have placed in your mouth shall not depart from your mouth, or* from the mouths* of your _⌊children_⌋,* or* from the mouths* of _⌊your children's children_⌋,"* says Yahweh, "from now on and forever."

⁵ "Look, days are coming," _⌊declares_⌋* Yahweh, "when I will raise up for David a righteous branch, and he will reign as king, and he will achieve success, and he will do justice and righteousness in the land. ⁶ In his days Judah will be saved, and Israel will dwell _⌊in safety_⌋,* and this is his name by which he will be called: 'Yahweh is our righteousness.'

²⁴ "Seventy weeks is decreed for your people and _⌊for your holy city_⌋,* to put an end to the transgression and to seal up sin* and to make atonement for guilt and to bring in everlasting righteousness and to seal vision and prophet and to anoint _⌊the most holy place_⌋.* ²⁵ And you must know and you must understand* that from the time of the going out of the word to restore and build Jerusalem until an anointed* one—a leader—will be _⌊seven weeks and sixty-two weeks_⌋;* it will be restored and will be built with streets and a moat, but _⌊in a time of oppression_⌋.* ²⁶ "And after the sixty and two weeks an anointed one* shall be cut off, and _⌊he shall have nothing_⌋,* and the people of the coming leader will destroy the city and the sanctuary,* and its end will be with the flood and on to the end there shall be war; these desolations are determined.

² But you, O Bethlehem Ephrathah, too small to be among the clans of Judah, from you one will go out for me, to be ruler in Israel; and his origins are from of old, from ancient days.

⁷ I will shake all the nations so that the treasure of all the nations will come, and I will fill this house* with glory,' says Yahweh of hosts.

⁹ Rejoice greatly, O daughter of Zion! Shout aloud, O daughter of Jerusalem! Look! Your king comes to you; he is righteous and victorious, humble and riding on a donkey, and on a male donkey, _⌊the foal of_⌋* a female donkey!

¹ "Look! I am going to send my messenger,* and he will prepare* the way _⌊before me_⌋.* And the Lord whom you are seeking will come suddenly to his temple, and the messenger of the covenant, in whom you are taking pleasure—look!—he is about to come," says Yahweh of hosts. ² And who can endure the day of his coming? And who is the one who can stand _⌊when he appears_⌋?* For he is like a refiner's fire, like launderers' alkali.* ³ He will sit as a refiner and purifier of silver; he will purify the children of Levi, and he will refine them like gold and like silver, and they will present to Yahweh offerings* in righteousness.

² But for you who revere* my name, the sun of righteousness will rise, with healing in its wings, and you will go out and leap like _⌊fattened calves_⌋.*

⁷ And he summoned the twelve and began to send them out two by two, and gave them authority over the unclean spirits.

²⁵ The woman said to him, "I know that Messiah is coming" (the one called Christ); "whenever that one comes, he will proclaim all things to us."

³ And I will grant authority* to my two witnesses, and they will prophesy for one thousand two hundred sixty days, dressed in sackcloth."

³⁷ If there should be in the land famine or disease, if there should be blight or mildew or locust or caterpillars, if it happens that his enemy lays siege against him in the land of his gates, if any plague or any disease,

⁷ For we are brought to an end by your anger, and we hasten off* by your wrath. ⁸ You have put our iniquities before you, our hidden sins into the light of your countenance. ⁹ For all of our days dwindle away in your rage; we complete our years like a sigh.

²³ And he went around through all of Galilee, teaching in their synagogues and proclaiming the good news of the kingdom and healing every disease and every sickness among the people.

¹⁰ For he had healed many, so that all those who _⌊were suffering from diseases_⌋* pressed about him in order that they could touch him.

²⁹ And immediately her _⌊hemorrhage stopped_⌋* and she realized in her* body that she was healed of her* suffering.

³⁴ But he said to her, "Daughter, your faith has healed you. Go in peace and be well from your suffering."

³⁰ Because of this, many are weak and sick among you, and quite a few _⌊have died_⌋*. ³¹ But if we were evaluating ourselves, we would not be judged. ³² But if we* are judged by the Lord, we are being disciplined, in order that we will not be condemned with the world.

⁶ For the Lord disciplines the one whom he loves, and punishes every son whom he accepts."*

¹⁴ Is anyone among you sick? He should summon the elders of the church and they should pray over him, anointing him with olive oil in the name of the Lord. ¹⁵ And the prayer of faith will save the one who is sick, and the Lord will raise him up, and if he has committed sins _⌊he will be forgiven_⌋*.

¹⁵ "I was eyes to the blind, and I was feet to the lame.

⁸ Yahweh opens the eyes of the blind; Yahweh raises up those bowed down; Yahweh loves the righteous;

¹⁸ And on that day, the deaf shall hear the words of a scroll, and the eyes of the blind shall see out of gloom and darkness. ¹⁹ And the meek _⌊have joy after joy_⌋* in Yahweh, and the needy of the people shall rejoice in the holy one of Israel.

³ And the eyes of those who see will not gaze,* and the ears of those who hear will listen. ⁴ And the _⌊minds_⌋* of the rash will understand _⌊knowledge_⌋,* and the tongues* of stammerers will hasten to speak clearly.

⁵ Then the eyes of the blind shall be opened, and the ears of the deaf shall be opened. ⁶ Then the lame shall leap like the deer, and the tongue of the dumb shall sing for joy, for waters shall break forth in the wilderness and streams in the desert.

⁶ "I am Yahweh; I have called you in righteousness, and I have grasped your hand and watched over you; and I have given you as a covenant of the people, as a light of the nations, ⁷ to open the blind eyes, to bring the prisoner out from the dungeon, those who sit in darkness from the house of imprisonment.

¹⁶ And I will lead the blind by a road they do not know; I will cause them to tread on paths they have not known. I will make darkness _⌊in their presence_⌋* into light and rough places into level ground. These are the things I will do, and I will not forsake them.

⁸ Bring out the people blind yet* with eyes, and deaf, though* they have ears.

¹ The Spirit of the Lord Yahweh is upon me, because Yahweh has anointed me, he has sent me to bring good news to the oppressed, to bind up _⌊the brokenhearted_⌋,* to _⌊proclaim_⌋* release to the captives and liberation to those who are bound, ² to _⌊proclaim_⌋* the year of Yahweh's favor, and our God's day of vengeance, to comfort all those in mourning, ³ to _⌊give_⌋* for those in mourning in Zion, to give them a head wrap instead of ashes, the oil of joy instead of mourning, a garment of praise instead of a faint spirit. And _⌊they will be called_⌋* oaks of righteousness, the planting of Yahweh, to show his glory.

⁸ Look, I am going to bring them from the land of the north, and I will gather them from the remotest part of the earth. Among them the blind, and the lame, those who are pregnant, and those who give birth, together, a great assembly, they will return here.

¹² And I will leave in your midst a people afflicted and poor, and they shall take refuge in the name of Yahweh.

²⁸ And when he* came into the house, the blind men approached him, and Jesus said to them, "Do you believe that I am able to do this?" They said to him, "Yes, Lord." ²⁹ Then he touched their eyes, saying, "According to your faith let it be done for you." ³⁰ And their eyes were opened, and Jesus sternly warned them, saying, "See that no one finds out."

³⁰ And large crowds came to him, having with them the mute, blind, lame, crippled,* and many others, and they put them down at his feet, and he healed them. ³¹ So then the crowd was astonished when they* saw the mute speaking, the crippled healthy, and the lame walking, and the blind seeing, and they praised the God of Israel.

¹⁴ And the blind and the lame came up to him in the temple courts* and he healed them.

³² And they brought to him a man who was deaf and had difficulty speaking, and they were imploring him that he would place his* hand on him. ³³ And he took him away from the crowd by himself and* put his fingers into his ears, and after* spitting, he touched his tongue. ³⁴ And looking up to heaven, he sighed and said to him, "Ephphatha!" (that is, "Be opened!"). ³⁵ And* his ears were opened and _⌊his difficulty in speaking was removed_⌋* and he began to speak normally. ³⁶ And he ordered them that they should say nothing, but as much as he ordered them not to, they proclaimed it* even more instead. ³⁷ And they were amazed beyond all measure, saying, "He has done all things well! He even makes the deaf hear and the mute speak!"

¹⁸ "The Spirit of the Lord is upon me, because of which he has anointed me to proclaim good news to the poor. He has sent me to proclaim release to the captives, and recovery of sight to the blind, to send out in freedom those who are oppressed,

¹² And it happened that while he was in one of the towns, _⌊there was_⌋* a man _⌊covered with leprosy_⌋.* And when he* saw Jesus, he fell down on his face and* begged him, saying, "Lord, if you are willing, you are able to make me clean." ¹³ And extending his* hand he touched him, saying, "I am willing; be clean." And immediately the leprosy went away from him. ¹⁴ And he ordered him, "Tell no one, but go and* show yourself to the priest and bring the offering* for your cleansing just as Moses commanded, for a testimony to them. ¹⁵ But the report about him spread even more, and large crowds were gathering to hear him* and to be healed of their illnesses.

¹⁴ And he came up and* touched the bier, and those who were carrying it* stopped. And he said, "Young man, I say to you, get up!" ¹⁵ And the dead man sat up and began to speak, and he gave him to his mother.

²¹ In that hour he healed many people of diseases and suffering and evil spirits, and he granted sight to many blind people.

⁵³ And they began laughing* at him, because they* knew that she was dead.

¹² And as* he was entering into a certain village, ten men met him**—lepers, who stood at a distance. ¹³ And they raised their voices, saying, "Jesus, Master, have mercy on us!" ¹⁴ And when he* saw them* he said to them, "Go and* show yourselves to the priests." And it happened that as they were going, they were cleansed. ¹⁵ But one of them, when he* saw that he was healed, turned back, praising God with a loud voice. ¹⁶ And he fell on his face at his feet, giving thanks to him. And he was a Samaritan. ¹⁷ So Jesus answered and* said, "Were not ten cleansed? And where are the nine? ¹⁸ Was no one found to turn back and* give praise to God except this foreigner?" ¹⁹ And he said to him, "Get up and* go your way. Your faith has saved you."

³⁵ Now it happened that as he drew near to Jericho, a certain blind man was sitting on the side of the road begging. ³⁶ And when he* heard a crowd going by, he inquired what this meant. ³⁷ And they told him, "Jesus the Nazarene is passing by." ³⁸ And he called out, saying, "Jesus, Son of David, have mercy on me!" ³⁹ And those who were in front rebuked him, that he should be silent, but he cried out _⌊even more loudly_⌋,* "Son of David, have mercy on me!" ⁴⁰ So Jesus stopped and* ordered him to be brought to him. And when* he approached, he asked him, ⁴¹ "What do you want me to do for you?" And he said, "Lord, that I may regain my sight. ⁴² And Jesus said to him, "Regain your sight! Your faith has saved you." ⁴³ And immediately he regained his sight and began to follow* him, glorifying God. And all the people, when they* saw it,* gave praise to God.

⁴⁶ And Nathanael said to him, "Can anything good come out of Nazareth?" Philip said to him, "Come and see!"

³⁰ The man answered and said to them, "For the remarkable thing is this, that you do not know where he is from, and he opened my eyes! ³¹ We know that God does not listen to sinners, but if someone is devout and does his will, he listens to this one. ³² From _⌊time immemorial_⌋* it has not been heard that someone opened the eyes of one born blind. ³³ If this man were not from God, he would not be able to do anything!"

² And a certain man was being carried who was lame _⌊from birth_⌋.* _⌊He_⌋* was placed every day at the gate of the temple called "Beautiful," so that he could ask for charitable gifts from those who were going into the temple courts.* ³ When he* saw Peter and John about to go into the temple courts,* he began asking to receive alms. ⁴ And Peter looked intently at him, together with John, and* said, "Look at us!" ⁵ So he fixed his attention on them, expecting to receive something from them. ⁶ But Peter said, "Silver and gold _⌊I do not possess_⌋,* but what I have, this I give to you—in the name of Jesus Christ the Nazarene, walk!"* ⁷ And taking hold of him by the right hand, he raised him up, and immediately his feet and ankles were made strong. ⁸ And leaping up, he stood and began walking around* and entered into the temple courts* with them, walking and leaping and praising God.

⁷ For many of those who had unclean spirits, they were coming out of them,* crying out with a loud voice, and many who were paralyzed and lame were healed.

⁸ And in Lystra a certain man was sitting powerless in his feet, lame from _⌊birth_⌋,* who had never walked. ⁹ This man listened while* Paul was speaking. _⌊Paul_⌋,* looking intently at him and seeing that he had faith to be healed, ¹⁰ said with a loud voice, "Stand upright on your feet!" And he leaped up and began walking.*

¹⁸ to open their eyes so that they may turn from darkness to light and from the power of Satan to God, so that they may receive forgiveness of sins and a share among those who are sanctified by faith in me.'

⁵ Listen, my dear brothers! Did not God choose the poor of the world to be rich in faith, and heirs of the kingdom that he has promised to those who love him?

¹⁴ And he will become like a sanctuary and a stumbling-stone, and like a stumbling-rock for the two houses of Israel, like a trap and a snare for the inhabitants of Jerusalem. ¹⁵ And many shall stumble among them, and they shall fall and they shall be broken, and they shall be ensnared and they shall be caught."

⁶ And whoever is not offended by me is blessed."

⁵⁷ And they were offended by him. But Jesus said to them, "A prophet is not without honor except in his own hometown and in his own household." ⁵⁸ And he did not perform many miracles in that place because of their unbelief.

³⁴ And Simeon blessed them and said to his mother Mary, "Behold, this child is appointed for the fall and rise of many in Israel, and for a sign that is opposed*—

⁶⁰ Thus many of his disciples, when they* heard it,* said, "This saying is hard! Who can understand it?" ⁶¹ But Jesus, because he* knew within himself that his disciples were grumbling about this, said to them, "Does this cause you to be offended? ⁶² Then what if you see the Son of Man ascending where he was before? ⁶³ The Spirit is the one who gives life; the flesh profits nothing. The words that I have spoken to you are spirit and are life. ⁶⁴ But there are some of you who do not believe." (For Jesus knew from the beginning who they were who did not believe, and who it was who would betray him.) ⁶⁵ And he said, "Because of this I said to you that no one can come to me unless it has been granted to him by the Father." ⁶⁶ For this reason many of his disciples _⌊drew back_⌋* and were not walking with him any longer.

³² Why that? Because they did not pursue it by faith, but as if by works. They stumbled over the _⌊stone that causes people to stumble_⌋*, ³³ just as it is written,
"Behold, I am laying in Zion _⌊a stone that causes people to stumble_⌋*, and _⌊a rock that causes them to fall_⌋*, and the one who believes in him will not be put to shame."*

²¹ For since, in the wisdom of God, the world through its wisdom did not know God, God was pleased through the foolishness of preaching to save those who believe. ²² For indeed, Jews ask for sign miracles and Greeks seek wisdom, ²³ but we preach Christ crucified, to the Jews a cause for stumbling, but to the Gentiles foolishness, ²⁴ but to those who are called, both Jews and Greeks, Christ is the power of God and the wisdom of God. ²⁵ For the foolishness of God is wiser than human wisdom,* and the weakness of God is stronger than human strength.* ²⁶ For consider your calling, brothers, that not many were wise according to human standards,* not many were powerful, not many were well born. ²⁷ But the foolish things of the world God chose in order that he might put to shame the wise, and the weak things of the world God chose in order that he might put to shame the strong, ²⁸ and the insignificant of the world, and the despised, God chose, the things that are not, in order that he might abolish the things that are,

¹⁴ But the natural man does not accept the things of the Spirit of God, for they are foolishness to him, and he is not able to understand them, because they are spiritually discerned.

⁷ Therefore the honor is for you who believe, but for those who refuse to believe,
"The stone that the builders rejected, this one has become _⌊the cornerstone_⌋*," ⁸ and
"A stone of stumbling and a rock of offense,"*
who stumble because they* disobey the word to which also they were consigned.

⁴ Unstable* as water, you shall not excel any longer, for you went up upon the bed of your father, then defiled it. You went up upon my couch!

¹ Now in those days John the Baptist came preaching in the Judean wilderness ² and saying, "Repent, for the kingdom of heaven has come near!" ³ For this is the one who was spoken about by the prophet Isaiah, saying,
"The voice of one crying out in the wilderness, 'Prepare the way of the Lord, make his paths straight.'"* ⁴ Now John himself had his clothing made from camel's hair and a belt made of leather around his waist, and his food was locusts and wild honey. ⁵ Then Jerusalem and all Judea and all the district around the Jordan were going out to him,

⁷ Now as* these were going away, Jesus began to speak to the crowds concerning John: "What did you go out into the wilderness to see? A reed shaken by the wind? ⁸ But what did you go out to see? A man dressed in soft clothing? Behold, those who wear soft clothing are in the houses of kings.

⁴ John was there baptizing in the wilderness, proclaiming* a baptism of repentance for the forgiveness of sins. ⁵ And all the Judean region and all the inhabitants of Jerusalem went out to him and were being baptized by him in the Jordan River, confessing their sins.

⁸⁰ And the child kept growing and becoming strong in spirit, and was in the wilderness until the day of his public appearance to Israel.

² in the time of the high priest Annas and Caiaphas, the word of God came to John the son of Zechariah in the wilderness.

²³ He said,
"I am 'the voice of one crying out in the wilderness, "Make straight the way of the Lord," '*
just as Isaiah the prophet said."

¹⁷ Therefore, when I* was wanting to do this, perhaps then was I making use of vacillation? Or was I deciding what I was deciding according to the flesh, in order that with me my "yes" may be "yes" and my "no" may be "no" at the same time?* ¹⁸ But God is faithful, so that our word to you is not "yes" and "no." ¹⁹ For the Son of God, Jesus Christ, the one who was proclaimed among you by us, by me and Silvanus and Timothy, did not become "yes" and "no," but has become "yes" in him. ²⁰ For as many as are the promises of God, in him they are "yes"; therefore also through him is the "amen" to the glory of God through us.

¹⁴ so that we may no longer be infants, tossed about by waves and carried about by every wind of teaching, by the trickery of people, by craftiness with reference to the scheming of deceit.

⁶ But let him ask for it in faith, without any doubting, for the one who doubts is like the surf of the sea, driven by the wind and tossed about. ⁷ For that person must not suppose that he will receive anything from the Lord; ⁸ he is a double-minded man, unstable in all his ways.

¹⁷ These people are waterless springs and mists driven by a hurricane, for whom the gloom of darkness has been reserved.

¹⁷ Therefore, dear friends, because you* know this beforehand, guard yourselves so that you do not lose your own safe position because you* have been led away by the error of lawless persons.

³⁵ I am eighty years old today. Can I discern between good and bad? Or can your servant taste what I eat or what I drink? Or can I still hear the voice of singing men and women? Why should your servant be a burden any longer to my lord the king?

⁵ the food of his table, the seat of his servants, the _⌊manner_⌋* of his servants and their clothing, his cupbearers, and his burnt offerings which he offered in the house of Yahweh, _⌊she was breathless_⌋.*

⁸ They answered him, "A _⌊hairy man_⌋* with a leather belt girded around his waist." And he said, "It is Elijah the Tishbite."

³ he gave a banquet in the third year of his reign for all his officials and servants. The army of Persia and Media and the nobles and officials of the provinces were in his presence

¹¹ to bring Queen Vashti before the king _⌊with her royal crown_⌋* to show the people and the officials her beauty, _⌊for she was very attractive_⌋.*

² he went up to the entrance of the gate of the king, for he could not go to the gate of the king in sackcloth.

¹ And it happened, on the third day, and Esther put on royal clothes, and she stood in the inner courtyard of the _⌊king's palace_⌋,* opposite the _⌊king's palace_⌋;* the king was sitting on his royal throne in the _⌊throne room_⌋* opposite the doorway of the palace.

¹⁵ Mordecai went out from the presence of the king in _⌊royal clothing_⌋* of blue cloth and white linen, and a great crown of gold and a robe of fine white linen and purple, and the city of Susa was shouting and rejoicing.

¹⁷ And he put on righteousness like a breastplate, and a helmet of salvation on his head, and he put on garments of vengeance for clothing, and he wrapped himself in zeal as in a robe.

⁴ Now John himself had his clothing made from camel's hair and a belt made of leather around his waist, and his food was locusts and wild honey.

²⁹ but I say to you that not even Solomon in all his glory was dressed like one of these.

³ Let your* adornment not be the external kind, braiding hair and putting on gold jewelry or putting on fine clothing, ⁴ but the hidden person of the heart, with the imperishable quality of a gentle and quiet spirit, which is highly valuable in the sight of God.

⁹ But why did you go out? To see a prophet?* Yes, I tell you, and even more than a prophet! ¹⁰ It is this man about whom it is written:
'Behold, I am sending my messenger before your face, who will prepare your way before you.'* ¹¹ Truly I say to you, among those born of women there has not arisen one greater than John the Baptist. But the one who is least in the kingdom of heaven is greater than he. ¹² But from the days of John the Baptist until now, the kingdom of heaven is treated violently, and the violent claim* it. ¹³ For all the prophets and the law prophesied until John, ¹⁴ and if you are willing to accept it,* he is Elijah, the one who is going to come.

⁷⁶ And so you, child, will be called the prophet of the Most High, for you will go on before the Lord to prepare his ways,

¹⁶ "The law and the prophets were until John; from that time on the kingdom of God has been proclaimed, and everyone is urgently pressed* into it.

⁶ But if we say, 'From men,' all the people will stone us to death, because they are convinced that John was a prophet."

²⁶ And they came to John and said to him, "Rabbi, he who was with you on the other side of the Jordan, about whom you testified—look, this one is baptizing, and all are coming to him!" ²⁷ John answered and said, "A man can receive not one thing unless it is granted to him from heaven! ²⁸ You yourselves testify about me that I said, 'I am not the Christ, but I am sent before that one.' ²⁹ The one who has the bride is the bridegroom. But the friend of the bridegroom, who stands and hears him, rejoices _⌊greatly_⌋* because of the bridegroom's voice. So this joy of mine is complete. ³⁰ It is necessary for that one to increase, but for me to decrease."

³⁵ That one was the lamp which was burning and shining, and you wanted to rejoice for an hour in his light.

³ A voice is calling in the wilderness, "Clear the way of Yahweh! Make a highway smooth in the desert for our God!

¹ "Look! I am going to send my messenger,* and he will prepare* the way _⌊before me_⌋.* And the Lord whom you are seeking will come suddenly to his temple, and the messenger of the covenant, in whom you are taking pleasure—look!—he is about to come," says Yahweh of hosts.

⁵ Look! I am going to send to you Elijah the prophet before the coming of the great and awesome day of Yahweh! ⁶ And he will bring back* the hearts of the fathers to the sons, and the hearts of the sons to their fathers, so that I will not come and strike the land with a ban."

¹⁰ It is this man about whom it is written:
'Behold, I am sending my messenger before your face, who will prepare your way before you.'*

² Just as it is written in the prophet Isaiah,
"Behold, I am sending my messenger before your face, who will prepare your way,

¹⁵ For he will be great in the sight of the Lord, and he must never drink wine or beer, and he will be filled with the Holy Spirit while he is* still in his mother's womb. ¹⁶ And he will turn many of the sons of Israel to the Lord their God. ¹⁷ And he will go on before him in the spirit and power of Elijah, to turn the hearts of the fathers to the children, and the disobedient to the wisdom of the righteous, to prepare for the Lord a people made ready."

¹¹ Truly I say to you, among those born of women there has not arisen one greater than John the Baptist. But the one who is least in the kingdom of heaven is greater than he.

¹⁶ But your eyes are blessed because they see, and your ears because they hear. ¹⁷ For truly I say to you that many prophets and righteous people longed to see what you see, and did not see it,* and to hear what you hear, and did not hear it!*

¹⁴ And _⌊you will experience joy and exultation_⌋,* and many will rejoice at his birth. ¹⁵ For he will be great in the sight of the Lord, and he must never drink wine or beer, and he will be filled with the Holy Spirit while he is* still in his mother's womb.

¹⁶ John answered them all, saying, "I baptize you with water, but the one who is more powerful than I am is coming, of whom I am not worthy to untie the strap of his sandals. He will baptize you with the Holy Spirit and fire.

⁴⁸ and said to them, "Whoever welcomes this child in my name welcomes me, and whoever welcomes me welcomes the one who sent me. For the one who is least among you all—this one is great."

²³ And turning to the disciples, he said privately, "Blessed are the eyes that see the things which you see! ²⁴ For I tell you that many prophets and kings desired to see the things which you see, and did not see them,* and to hear the things which you hear, and did not hear them."*

⁸ To me, the least of all the saints, was given this grace: to proclaim the good news of the fathomless riches of Christ to the Gentiles, ⁹ and to enlighten everyone as to what is the administration of the mystery hidden from the ages by God, who created all things,

²⁵ of which I became a minister, according to God's stewardship which was given to me for you, to complete the word of God, ²⁶ the mystery which has been hidden from the ages and from the generations, but has now been revealed to his saints, ²⁷ to whom God wanted to make known what is the glorious wealth of this mystery among the Gentiles, which is Christ in you, the hope of glory,

³⁹ And although they* all were approved* through their faith, they did not receive what was promised, ⁴⁰ because* God had provided something better for us, so that they would not be made perfect without us.

¹⁰ Concerning this* salvation, the prophets who prophesied about the grace meant for you sought and made careful inquiry, ¹¹ investigating for what person or which time the Spirit of Christ in them was indicating when he* testified beforehand to the sufferings with reference to Christ and the glories after these things, ¹² to whom it was revealed that they were serving not themselves but you with reference to the same things which now have been announced to you through those who proclaimed the gospel to you by the Holy Spirit sent from heaven, _⌊things into which_⌋* angels desire to look.

⁷ Adoni-bezek said, "Seventy kings with _⌊their thumbs and big toes_⌋* cut off used to pick up scraps under my table; just as I have done, so God has repaid to me. And they brought him to Jerusalem, and he died there.

⁴ Against you, only you, I have sinned and have done this evil* in your eyes, so that you are correct when you speak, you are blameless when you judge.

⁵ Then Jerusalem and all Judea and all the district around the Jordan were going out to him, ⁶ and they were being baptized by him in the Jordan River as they* confessed their sins.

³¹ Which of the two did the will of his* father?" They said, "The first." Jesus said to them, "Truly I say to you that the tax collectors and the prostitutes are going ahead of you into the kingdom of God! ³² For John came to you in the way of righteousness and you did not believe him, but the tax collectors and the prostitutes did believe him. And when* you saw it,* you did not even change your minds later so as to believe in him.

¹² And tax collectors also came to be baptized, and they said to him, "Teacher, what should we do?"

³⁵ And wisdom is vindicated by all her children."

²⁵ This man had been instructed in the way of the Lord, and being enthusiastic in spirit, he was speaking and teaching accurately the things about Jesus, although he* knew only the baptism of John.

³ And he said, "Into what then were you baptized?" And they said, "Into the baptism of John."

⁴ May it never be! But let God be true but every human being a liar, just as it is written,
"In order that you may be justified in your words, and may prevail when you are* judged."* ⁵ But if our unrighteousness demonstrates the righteousness of God, what shall we say? God, who inflicts wrath, is not unjust, is he? (I am speaking according to a human perspective.) ⁶ May it never be! For otherwise, how will God judge the world?

³ For ignoring the righteousness of God, and seeking to establish their own,* they did not subject themselves to the righteousness of God.

³ And they were singing the song of Moses, the slave of God, and the song of the Lamb, saying:
"Great and marvelous are your works, Lord God All-Powerful; righteous and true are your ways, King of the ages!*

⁵ And I heard the angel of the waters saying,
"You are righteous, the one who is and the one who was, the Holy One, because you have judged these things,

⁸ How can you say, 'We are wise and the law of Yahweh is with us'? Look, surely _⌊the lying stylus of the scribes_⌋* has made it a lie.

³⁵ And one of them, a legal expert, put a question to him* to test him:

³⁴ "Jerusalem, Jerusalem, the one who kills the prophets and stones those who are sent to her! How many times I wanted to gather your children together _⌊the way_⌋* a hen gathers* her own brood under her* wings, and you were not willing!

²⁷ for I did not shrink from proclaiming to you the whole purpose of God.

²¹ But about Israel he says,
"The whole day long I held out my hands to a disobedient and resistant people."*

¹ Now because we* are fellow workers, we also urge you not to receive the grace of God in vain.

²¹ I do not declare invalid the grace of God, for if righteousness is through the law, then Christ died to no purpose.

¹¹ in whom also we were chosen, having been predestined according to the purpose of the One who works all things according to the counsel of his will,

¹³ What can I say for you? What can I compare to you, O daughter of Jerusalem? To what can I liken you so that I can comfort you, O virgin daughter of Zion? For your destruction is as vast as the sea; who can heal you?

³⁰ And he said, "With what can we compare the kingdom of God, or by what parable can we present it?

¹⁶ Why is this? A price in the hand of a fool, in order to buy wisdom where* there is no _⌊sense_⌋.*

⁹ To whom will he teach knowledge, and to whom will he explain the message? Those who are weaned from milk, those taken from the breast? ¹⁰ For it is blah-blah upon blah-blah, blah-blah upon blah-blah, gah-gah upon gah-gah, gah-gah upon gah-gah,* a little here, a little there. ¹¹ For he will speak with _⌊stammering_⌋* and another tongue to this people, ¹² to whom he has said,
"This is rest; give rest to the weary; and this is repose"; yet* they were not willing to hear. ¹³ And to them the word of Yahweh will be
blah-blah upon blah-blah blah-blah upon blah-blah gah-gah upon gah-gah gah-gah upon gah-gah,* a little here, a little there, so that they may go and stumble backward and be broken and ensnared and captured.

¹¹ And the vision of all this has become for you like the words of a sealed document. When they give it to one who knows the* document, saying, "_⌊Read_⌋* this now!" He says, "I am not able, for it is sealed." ¹² And if the document is given to one who does not _⌊know how to read_⌋,* saying, "_⌊Read_⌋* this now!" he says, "I do not _⌊know how to read_⌋."*

³ O Yahweh, do not your eyes look for honesty? You have struck them, but they felt no pain, you have destroyed them, they refused to take discipline. They have hardened their faces more than rock, they have refused to turn back. ⁴ Then I said, "They are just simple people, they are foolish, for they know not the way of Yahweh, the law* of their God. ⁵ Let me go to the great, and let me speak with them, for they know the way of Yahweh, the law* of their God." However, they together have broken the yoke, they have torn to pieces the bonds.

⁵ And the public squares of the city will be filled with boys and girls playing in its public squares.'

⁸ And you shall not enter the house of the banquet, to sit with them, to eat and drink." ⁹ For thus says Yahweh of hosts, the God of Israel, "Look, I am about to cause to disappear from this place, before your eyes and in your days, the voice of jubilation, and the voice of joy, and the voice of the bridegroom, and the voice of the bride. ¹⁰ _⌊And then_⌋* when you tell this people all these words and they ask you, '_⌊Why_⌋* has Yahweh pronounced against us all this great evil, and what is our iniquity, and what is our sin that we have sinned against Yahweh our God?'

²⁵ It is enough for the disciple that he become like his teacher, and the slave like his master. If they have called the master of the house Beelzebul, how much more the members of his household?

⁶ And John was dressed in camel's hair and a belt made of leather around his waist, and he ate locusts and wild honey.

¹⁵ For he will be great in the sight of the Lord, and he must never drink wine or beer, and he will be filled with the Holy Spirit while he is* still in his mother's womb.

⁴⁸ The Jews answered and said to him, "Do we not correctly say that you are a Samaritan and have a demon?"

⁵² The Jews* said to him, "Now we know that you have a demon! Abraham and the prophets died, and you say, 'If anyone keeps my word, he will never taste death _⌊forever_⌋.'*

²⁰ And many of them were saying, "He has a demon and is out of his mind! Why do you listen to him?"

¹³ But others jeered and* said, "They are full of sweet new wine!"

¹¹ And when they* saw it,* the Pharisees began to say to his disciples, "Why does your teacher eat with tax collectors and sinners?"

²⁹ And Levi gave a great banquet for him in his house, and there was a large crowd of tax collectors and others who were reclining for the meal with them.

³⁶ Now one of the Pharisees asked him to eat with him, and he entered into the house of the Pharisee and* reclined at the table.

³⁷ And as he was speaking, a Pharisee asked him _⌊to have a meal_⌋* with him, and he went in and* reclined at table.

¹ And it happened that when he came to the house of a certain one of the leaders of the Pharisees on a Sabbath to eat _⌊a meal_⌋,* they were watching him closely.

² And both the Pharisees and the scribes were complaining, saying, "This man welcomes sinners and eats with them!"

⁷ And when they* saw it,* they all began to complain,* saying, "He has gone in to find lodging with a man who is a sinner!"

² And both Jesus and his disciples were invited to the wedding.

² So they made him a dinner there, and Martha was serving, but Lazarus was one of the ones reclining at table with him.

³² "And now, children, listen to me; happy are those who will keep my ways. ³³ Hear teaching and be wise; do not neglect it. ³⁴ Happy is the person who listens to me, in order to keep watch at my doors day by day, in order to guard the frames of my entrances. ³⁵ For he who finds me is he who finds* life, and he obtains favor from Yahweh. ³⁶ But he who misses me injures himself.* All those who hate me love death."

⁹ Who is wise that he can understand these things? Who is discerning that he knows them? The ways of Yahweh are right, and the righteous walk in them; but transgressors stumble in them.

¹⁹ The Son of Man came eating and drinking, and they say, 'Behold, a man who is a glutton and a drunkard, a friend of tax collectors and sinners!' But wisdom is vindicated by her deeds."*

²⁹ (And all the people, when they* heard this*—even the tax collectors—affirmed the righteousness of God, because they* had been baptized with the baptism of John,

¹⁴ But the natural man does not accept the things of the Spirit of God, for they are foolishness to him, and he is not able to understand them, because they are spiritually discerned. ¹⁵ Now the spiritual person discerns all things, but he himself is judged by no one.

⁵ But they were saying, "Not during the feast, so that there will not be an uproar among the people." ⁶ Now while* Jesus was at Bethany in the house of Simon the leper,

³ And while* he was at Bethany in the house of Simon the leper, as* he was reclining for a meal, a woman came holding an alabaster flask of very costly perfumed oil of genuine nard. After* breaking the alabaster flask, she poured it* out on his head. ⁴ But some were expressing indignation to one another:* "Why has there been this waste of perfumed oil? ⁵ For this perfumed oil could have been sold for more than three hundred denarii and given to the poor!" And they began to scold* her. ⁶ But Jesus said, "Leave her alone. Why do you cause trouble for her? She has done a good deed to me. ⁷ For the poor you always have with you, and you can do good for them whenever you want, but you do not always have me. ⁸ She has done what she could; _⌊she has anointed my body beforehand_⌋* for burial. ⁹ And truly I say to you, wherever the gospel is proclaimed in the whole world, what she has done will also be told in memory of her.

³⁴ The Son of Man has come eating and drinking, and you say, 'Behold, a man who is a glutton and a drunkard, a friend of tax collectors and sinners!'

² (Now it was Mary who anointed the Lord with perfumed oil and wiped his feet with her hair, whose brother Lazarus was sick.) ³ So the sisters sent word* to him, saying, "Lord, behold, the one whom you love is sick." ⁴ And when he* heard it,* Jesus said, "This sickness is not to death, but for the glory of God, in order that the Son of God may be glorified through it." ⁵ (Now Jesus loved Martha and her sister and Lazarus.) ⁶ So when he heard that he was sick, then he remained in the place _⌊where_⌋* he was two days. ⁷ Then after this he said to the disciples, "Let us go to Judea again." ⁸ The disciples said to him, "Rabbi, the Jews were seeking just now to stone you, and are you going there again?" ⁹ Jesus replied, Are there not twelve hours in the day? If anyone walks around in the daylight, he does not stumble, because he sees the light of this world. ¹⁰ But if anyone walks around in the night, he stumbles, because the light is not in him. ¹¹ He said these things, and after this he said to them, "Our friend Lazarus has fallen asleep, but I am going so that I can awaken him." ¹² So the disciples said to him, "Lord, if he has fallen asleep, he will get well." ¹³ (Now Jesus had been speaking about his death, but they thought that he was speaking about _⌊real sleep_⌋.*) ¹⁴ So Jesus then said to them plainly, "Lazarus has died, ¹⁵ and I am glad _⌊for your sake_⌋* that I was not there, so that you may believe. But let us go to him." ¹⁶ Then Thomas (the one who is called Didymus)* said to his fellow disciples, "Let us go also, so that we may die with him."

³¹ Which of the two did the will of his* father?" They said, "The first." Jesus said to them, "Truly I say to you that the tax collectors and the prostitutes are going ahead of you into the kingdom of God!

⁶ Now while* Jesus was at Bethany in the house of Simon the leper, ⁷ a woman came up to him holding an alabaster flask of very expensive perfumed oil, and poured it* out on his head while he* was reclining at table. ⁸ And when* the disciples saw it* they were indignant, saying, "_⌊Why_⌋* this waste? ⁹ For this could have been sold for a large sum and given to the poor!" ¹⁰ But Jesus, knowing this,* said to them, "Why do you cause trouble for the woman? For she has done a good deed for me. ¹¹ For the poor you always have with you, but you do not always have me. ¹² For when* this woman poured this ointment on my body, she did it* in order to prepare me for burial. ¹³ Truly I say to you, wherever this gospel is proclaimed in the whole world, what this woman has done will also be told in memory of her."

³⁰ And the Pharisees and their scribes began to complain* to his disciples, saying, "Why do you eat and drink with the tax collectors and sinners?"

³² I have not come to call the righteous but sinners to repentance."

³⁷ And behold, a woman in the town who was a sinner, when she* learned that he was dining in the Pharisee's house, brought an alabaster flask of perfumed oil, ³⁸ and standing behind him at his feet weeping, she began to wet his feet with her tears and was wiping them* with the hair of her head and was kissing his feet and anointing them* with the perfumed oil. ³⁹ Now when* the Pharisee who invited him saw this,* he spoke to himself, saying, "If this man were a prophet, he would have known who and what kind of woman this is who is touching him, that she is a sinner."

¹³ But the tax collector, standing far away, did not want even to raise his eyes to heaven, but was beating his breast, saying, 'God, be merciful to me, a sinner!'

²⁴ So they summoned the man who had been blind for the second time and said to him, "Give glory to God! We know that this man is a sinner!"

³¹ We know that God does not listen to sinners, but if someone is devout and does his will, he listens to this one.

¹ Then, six days before the Passover, Jesus came to Bethany, where Lazarus was, whom Jesus had raised from the dead. ² So they made him a dinner there, and Martha was serving, but Lazarus was one of the ones reclining at table with him. ³ Then Mary took a pound* of ointment of very valuable genuine nard and* anointed the feet of Jesus, and wiped his feet with her hair. And the house was filled with the fragrance of the ointment. ⁴ But Judas Iscariot, one of his disciples (the one who was going to betray him) said, ⁵ "_⌊Why_⌋* was this ointment not sold for three hundred denarii and given to the poor?" ⁶ (Now he said this not because _⌊he was concerned_⌋* about the poor, but because he was a thief, and having the money box, he used to steal what was put into it.)* ⁷ So Jesus said, "Leave her alone, so that she may keep it for the day of my preparation for burial. ⁸ For you have the poor with you always, but you do not always have me."

⁸ but God demonstrates his own love for us, in that while* we were still sinners, Christ died for us.

⁹ knowing this, that the law is not given for a righteous person but for the lawless and rebellious, for the ungodly and sinners, for the unholy and totally worldly, for the one who kills his father and the one who kills his mother, for murderers,

¹⁵ The saying is trustworthy and worthy of all acceptance: Christ Jesus came into the world to save sinners, of whom I am the foremost.

¹⁸ And if the righteous are saved with difficulty, _⌊what will become of the ungodly and the sinner_⌋*?*

⁴ Let a little water be brought and wash your feet, and rest under the tree.

⁴ And as the angel of Yahweh spoke these words to all the _⌊Israelites_⌋,* the people _⌊wept bitterly_⌋.* ⁵ And they called the name of this place Bokim,* and there they sacrificed to Yahweh.

¹ While Ezra was praying and confessing, weeping and throwing himself down before the house of God, a very great assembly of men, women, and children from Israel gathered to him. And the people wept bitterly.

⁶ I am weary with my groaning; _⌊I flood_⌋* my bed every night. With my tears _⌊I drench_⌋* my couch. ⁷ My eye wastes away because of vexation; it grows old because of all my oppressors. ⁸ Depart from me, all workers of evil, for Yahweh has heard the sound of my weeping.

¹⁸ For my iniquity I confess; I am anxious because of my sin.

¹⁷ The sacrifices of God are a broken spirit; A broken and contrite heart, O God, you will not despise.

⁵ Those who sow with tears shall reap with rejoicing. ⁶ He who diligently goes out with weeping, carrying the seed bag, shall certainly come in with rejoicing, carrying his sheaves.

⁸ Always be clothed in white garments, and never let your head lack oil!

³ As fragrance, _⌊your perfumes_⌋* are _⌊delightful_⌋;* your name is poured out _⌊perfume_⌋;* therefore young women love you.

⁹ And you climbed down to the king with oil, and you made your perfumes numerous, and you sent your envoys _⌊far away_⌋,* and you _⌊sent down deep_⌋* to Sheol.

³ to _⌊give_⌋* for those in mourning in Zion, to give them a head wrap instead of ashes, the oil of joy instead of mourning, a garment of praise instead of a faint spirit. And _⌊they will be called_⌋* oaks of righteousness, the planting of Yahweh, to show his glory.

⁹ With weeping they will come, and with pleas for mercy I will bring them; I will let them walk by streams of water in a straight path. They will not stumble in it, for I have become to Israel a father, and Ephraim, he is my firstborn."

¹⁸ Indeed I heard Ephraim pitying themselves, 'You disciplined me, and I was disciplined, like a calf that is not trained. Bring me back and let me return, for you are Yahweh my God. ¹⁹ For after my turning back I repented, and after coming to understand I struck my thigh. I was ashamed and also humiliated, because I bore the disgrace of my youth.' ²⁰ Is Ephraim my dear son, or the child of my delight? For _⌊as often as_⌋* I have earnestly spoken against him, I still remember him. _⌊Therefore_⌋* my bowels are turbulent for him, surely I will have compassion on him," _⌊declares_⌋* Yahweh.

¹² "And even now," _⌊declares_⌋* Yahweh, "return to me with all your heart, with fasting, and weeping, and wailing."

⁴ Blessed are the ones who mourn, because they will be comforted.

²¹ Blessed are those who are hungry now, because you will be satisfied. Blessed are those who weep now, Because you will laugh.

⁴⁴ And turning toward the woman, he said to Simon, "Do you see this woman? I entered into your house. You did not give me water for my feet, but she wet my feet with her tears and wiped them* with her hair. ⁴⁵ You did not give me a kiss, but from the time I entered, she has not stopped kissing my feet. ⁴⁶ You did not anoint my head with olive oil, but she anointed my feet with perfumed oil.

⁶² And he went outside and* wept bitterly.

⁴ he got up from the dinner and took off his* outer clothing, and taking a towel, tied it* around himself. ⁵ Then he poured water into the washbasin and began to wash the feet of the disciples, and to wipe them* dry with the towel _⌊which he had tied around himself_⌋.*

¹⁰ For grief according to the will of God brings about a repentance leading to salvation, not to be regretted, but worldly grief brings about death. ¹¹ For behold how much diligence this very thing, being grieved according to the will of God, has brought about in you: what defense of yourselves, what indignation, what fear, what longing, what zeal, what punishment! In everything you have demonstrated yourselves to be innocent in this matter.

⁹ Lament and mourn and weep! Let your laughter be turned to mourning, and your* joy to gloominess.

²⁰ But Gehazi the servant of Elisha, the man of God, thought, "Look, my master has refrained from taking what this Aramean Naaman brought from his hand. _⌊As Yahweh lives_⌋,* I will certainly run after him, and I will accept something from him."

⁷ For, like hair in his _⌊throat_⌋,* so it is.* "Eat and drink!" he will say to you, but his heart will not be with you.

⁵ _⌊who say_⌋,* "_⌊Keep to yourself_⌋!* You must not come near me, for I am too holy for you!" These are a smoke in my _⌊nostrils_⌋,* a fire burning all day.

¹² And when he* heard it,* he said, "Those who are healthy do not have need of a physician, but those _⌊who are sick_⌋.* ¹³ But go and* learn what it means, "I want mercy and not sacrifice."* For I did not come to call the righteous, but sinners."

¹⁶ Thus the last will be first and the first last."

²⁸ "Now what do you think? A man had two sons. He approached* the first and* said, 'Son, go work in the vineyard today.' ²⁹ And he answered and* said, 'I do not want to!' But later he changed his mind and* went. ³⁰ And he approached the second* and* said the same thing. So he answered and* said, 'I will, sir,' and he did not go. ³¹ Which of the two did the will of his* father?" They said, "The first." Jesus said to them, "Truly I say to you that the tax collectors and the prostitutes are going ahead of you into the kingdom of God!

⁶ Now some of the scribes were sitting there and reasoning in their hearts, ⁷ "Why does this man speak like this? He is blaspheming! Who is able to forgive sins except God alone?"

²¹ For from within, from the heart of people, come evil plans, sexual immoralities, thefts, murders,

⁸ Therefore produce fruit worthy of repentance! And do not begin to say to yourselves, 'We have Abraham as father.' For I say to you that God is able to raise up children for Abraham from these stones!

¹⁶ And fear seized them all, and they began to glorify* God, saying, "A great prophet has appeared among us!" and "God has visited to help his people!"

³⁷ And behold, a woman in the town who was a sinner, when she* learned that he was dining in the Pharisee's house, brought an alabaster flask of perfumed oil,

¹⁷ And he reasoned to himself, saying, 'What should I do? For I do not have anywhere I can gather in my crops.'

²⁸ But he became angry and did not want to go in. So his father came out and* began to implore* him. ²⁹ But he answered and* said to his father, 'Behold, so many years I have served you, and have never disobeyed your command! And you never gave me a young goat so that I could celebrate with my friends! ³⁰ But when this son of yours returned—who has consumed your assets with prostitutes—you killed the fattened calf for him!'

³ And the manager said to himself, 'What should I do, because my master is taking away the management from me? I am not strong enough to dig; I am ashamed to beg.

⁴ And he was not willing for a time, but after these things he said to himself, 'Even if I do not fear God or respect people,

⁹ And he also told this parable to some who trusted in themselves that they were righteous, and looked down on _⌊everyone else_⌋:* ¹⁰ "Two men went up to the temple to pray, one a Pharisee and the other a tax collector. ¹¹ The Pharisee stood and* prayed these things with reference to himself: 'God, I give thanks to you that I am not like other people—swindlers, unrighteous people, adulterers, or even like this tax collector!

¹² And there was a lot of grumbling concerning him among the crowds; some were saying, "He is a good man," but others were saying, "No, but he deceives the crowd."

⁴⁷ Then the Pharisees replied to them, "You have not also been deceived, have you?* ⁴⁸ _⌊None_⌋* of the rulers or of the Pharisees have believed in him, have they?* ⁴⁹ But this crowd who does not know the law is accursed!" ⁵⁰ Nicodemus, the one who came to him previously—who was one of them—said to them, ⁵¹ "Our law does not condemn a man unless it first hears from him and knows what he is doing, does it?"* ⁵² They answered and said to him, "You are not also from Galilee, are you?* Investigate and see that a prophet does not arise from Galilee!"
