⁵ And although he* wanted to kill him, he feared the crowd, because they looked upon him as a prophet.

⁹ But why did you go out? To see a prophet?* Yes, I tell you, and even more than a prophet!

²⁶ But if we say, 'From men,' we are afraid of the crowd, because they all look upon John as a prophet."

³² For John came to you in the way of righteousness and you did not believe him, but the tax collectors and the prostitutes did believe him. And when* you saw it,* you did not even change your minds later so as to believe in him.

¹⁹ So Herodias held a grudge against him and was wanting to kill him, and was not able to do so. ²⁰ For Herod was afraid of John, because he* knew him to be a righteous and holy man and protected him. And when he* listened to him, he was greatly perplexed, and yet he listened to him gladly.

³⁰ The baptism of John—was it from heaven or from men? Answer me!" ³¹ And they began to discuss* this* with one another, saying, "What should we say?* If we say 'From heaven,' he will say, 'Why then did you not believe him?' ³² But if we say, 'From men'"—they were afraid of the crowd, because they all looked upon John _⌊as truly a prophet_⌋.*

¹ Now after two days it was the Passover and the feast of Unleavened Bread, and the chief priests and the scribes were seeking how, after* arresting him by stealth, they could kill him.* ² For they said, "Not at the feast, lest there be an uproar by the people."

⁶ But if we say, 'From men,' all the people will stone us to death, because they are convinced that John was a prophet."

²¹ So after* threatening them* further, they released them, finding no way to punish them on account of the people, because they were all praising God for what had happened.

²⁶ Then the captain went with the officers and* brought them, not with force (for they were afraid of the people, lest they be stoned by them).*
