¹ "For the kingdom of heaven is like a man—the master of the house—who went out early in the morning to hire workers for his vineyard. ² And after* coming to an agreement with the workers for a denarius per day, he sent them into his vineyard. ³ And going out about the third hour, he saw others standing idle in the marketplace. ⁴ And to those people he said, 'You also go into the vineyard, and I will give you whatever is right.' ⁵ So they went. Going out* again about the sixth and ninth hour he did the same thing. ⁶ And about the eleventh hour he went out and* found others standing there and said to them, 'Why are you standing here the whole day unemployed?' ⁷ They said to him, 'Because no one hired us.' He said to them, 'You go also into the vineyard.' ⁸ And when* evening came, the owner of the vineyard said to his manager, 'Call the workers and pay them their* wages, beginning from the last up to the first.' ⁹ And when the ones hired about the eleventh hour came, they received a denarius apiece. ¹⁰ And when* the first came, they thought that they would receive more, and they also received a denarius apiece. ¹¹ And when they* received it,* they began to complain* against the master of the house, ¹² saying, 'These last people worked one hour and you made them equal to us who have endured the burden of the day and the burning heat!' ¹³ But he answered one of them and* said, 'Friend, I am not doing you wrong. Did you not come to an agreement with me for a denarius? ¹⁴ Take what is yours and go! But I want to give to this last person the same as I gave* to you also. ¹⁵ Is it not* permitted for me to do whatever I want with what is mine? Or is your eye evil because I am generous?' ¹⁶ Thus the last will be first and the first last." ¹⁷ And as* Jesus was going up to Jerusalem, he took the twelve disciples by themselves and said to them on the way, ¹⁸ "Behold, we are going up to Jerusalem, and the Son of Man will be handed over to the chief priests and scribes, and they will condemn him to death, ¹⁹ and will hand him over to the Gentiles to mock him* and flog him* and crucify him,* and on the third day he will be raised." ²⁰ Then the mother of the sons of Zebedee came up to him with her sons, and* kneeling down she asked* something from him. ²¹ And he said to her, "What do you want?" She said to him, "Say that these two sons of mine may sit one at your right hand and one at your left in your kingdom." ²² But Jesus answered and* said, "You do not know what you are asking! Are you able to drink the cup that I am about to drink?" They said to him, "We are able." ²³ He said to them, "You will indeed drink my cup, but to sit at my right hand and at my left is not mine* to grant, but is for those for whom it has been prepared by my Father." ²⁴ And when* the ten heard this,* they were indignant concerning the two brothers. ²⁵ But Jesus called them to himself and* said, "You know that the rulers of the Gentiles lord it over them, and those in high positions exercise authority over them. ²⁶ It will not be like this among you! But whoever wants to become great among you must be your servant, ²⁷ and whoever wants to be most prominent among you must be your slave— ²⁸ just as the Son of Man did not come to be served, but to serve, and to give his life as a ransom for many." ²⁹ And as* they were going out of Jericho, a large crowd followed him. ³⁰ And behold, there were two blind men sitting beside the road. When they* heard that Jesus was passing by, they called out, saying, "Lord, have mercy on us,* Son of David!" ³¹ And the crowd rebuked them so that they would be quiet. But they called out all the more, saying, "Lord, have mercy on us,* Son of David!" ³² And Jesus stopped,* called them, and said, "What do you want me to do for you?" ³³ They said to him, "Lord, that our eyes be opened!" ³⁴ And having compassion, Jesus touched their eyes, and immediately they received their sight and followed him.

¹¹ _⌊Solomon had a vineyard_⌋* at Baal-hamon; _⌊he entrusted his vineyard to the keepers_⌋;* _⌊people paid a thousand silver pieces for its fruit_⌋.* ¹² _⌊My own "vineyard" belongs to me_⌋;* the "thousand" are for you, O Solomon, _⌊and "two hundred" for those who tend its fruit_⌋.*

¹ Let me sing for my beloved a song of my love concerning his vineyard: _⌊My beloved had a vineyard_⌋* on _⌊a fertile hill_⌋.* ² And he dug it and cleared it of stones, and he planted it with choice vines,* and he built a watchtower in the middle of it, and he even hewed out a wine vat in it, and he waited for it to yield grapes— but it yielded wild grapes.

³ "From the thirteenth year of Josiah, the son of Amon, the king of Judah, even up to this day, these twenty-three years* the word of Yahweh has come to me, and _⌊I have spoken to you over and over again_⌋,* but you have not listened. ⁴ And though Yahweh has sent all his servants the prophets to you _⌊over and over again_⌋* you have not listened, and you have not inclined your ear to hear,

² and saying, "Repent, for the kingdom of heaven has come near!"

³⁷ Then he said to his disciples, "The harvest is plentiful, but the workers are few. ³⁸ Therefore ask the Lord of the harvest that he send out workers into his harvest."

²⁴ He put before them another parable, saying, "The kingdom of heaven may be compared to a man who sowed good seed in his field.

³³ He told them another parable: "The kingdom of heaven is like yeast that a woman took and* put into three measures of wheat flour until the whole batch was leavened."

²⁸ "Now what do you think? A man had two sons. He approached* the first and* said, 'Son, go work in the vineyard today.'

³³ "Listen to another parable: There was a man—a master of a house—who planted a vineyard, and put a fence around it, and dug a winepress in it, and built a watchtower, and leased it to tenant farmers, and went on a journey. ³⁴ And when the season of fruit drew near, he sent his slaves to the tenant farmers to collect his fruit. ³⁵ And the tenant farmers seized his slaves, one of whom they beat, and one of whom they killed, and one of whom they stoned. ³⁶ Again, he sent other slaves, more than the first ones, and they did the same thing to them. ³⁷ So finally he sent his son to them, saying, 'They will respect my son.' ³⁸ But when* the tenant farmers saw the son, they said among themselves, 'This is the heir. Come, let us kill him and have his inheritance!' ³⁹ And they seized him and* threw him* out of the vineyard and killed him.* ⁴⁰ Now when the master of the vineyard arrives, what will he do to those tenant farmers?" ⁴¹ They said to him, "He will destroy those evil men completely and lease the vineyard to other tenant farmers who will give him the fruits in their season." ⁴² Jesus said to them, "Have you never read in the scriptures,
'The stone which the builders rejected, this has become _⌊the cornerstone_⌋.* This came about from the Lord, and it is marvelous in our eyes'?* ⁴³ For this reason, I tell you that the kingdom of God will be taken away from you and will be given to a people* who produce its fruits.

³⁷ "Jerusalem, Jerusalem, who kills the prophets and stones those who are sent to her! How many times I wanted to gather your children together _⌊the way_⌋* a hen gathers her young together under her* wings, and you were not willing!

¹ "Then the kingdom of heaven may be compared to ten virgins who took their lamps and* went out to meet the bridegroom.

¹⁴ For it is like a man going on a journey. He summoned his own slaves and handed over his property to them.

³⁴ It is like a man away on a journey, who left his house and gave his slaves authority—to each one his work—and to the doorkeeper he gave orders that he should be on the alert.

⁵⁸ So then, my dear brothers, be steadfast, immovable, always abounding in the work of the Lord, because you* know that your labor is not in vain in the Lord.

²¹ equip you with every good thing to do his will, carrying out in us what is pleasing before him through Jesus Christ, to whom be the glory _⌊forever_⌋*.* Amen.

²⁷ You go near and hear _⌊everything_⌋* that Yahweh our God will say; and then you tell us all that Yahweh our God tells you, and we will listen, and we will do it.' ²⁸ "And Yahweh heard the sound of your words _⌊when you spoke to me_⌋,* and Yahweh said to me, 'I have heard the sound of the words of this people that they have spoken to you; they are right with respect to all that they have spoken. ²⁹ _⌊If only_⌋* _⌊they had such a mind_⌋';* that is, to fear me and to keep all my commandments _⌊at all times_⌋,* so that _⌊it will go well_⌋* for them and for their children _⌊forever_⌋.* ³⁰ Go! Say to them, "Return to your tents."

¹⁸ Now Samuel was serving before Yahweh, as a boy wearing a linen ephod.

²⁶ But the boy Samuel _⌊continued to grow in stature and in favor_⌋* with Yahweh and with the people.

¹ Now the boy Samuel was serving Yahweh _⌊in the presence_⌋* of Eli. The word of Yahweh was rare in those days; visions were not widespread.

²¹ And Yahweh appeared again in Shiloh, for Yahweh revealed himself to Samuel in Shiloh through the word of Yahweh.

¹¹ Then Samuel said to Jesse, "_⌊Are all the young men here_⌋?"* And he said, "The youngest still remains, but look, he is shepherding the flock." And Samuel said to Jesse, "Send and bring him, for we cannot _⌊sit down_⌋* until he comes here." ¹² So he sent and brought him. Now he was ruddy with beautiful eyes and of _⌊handsome_⌋* appearance. And Yahweh said, "Arise, anoint him, for this is he."

⁶ Then Solomon said, "You have shown great loyal love with your servant David my father, as he walked before you in faithfulness and in righteousness and in uprightness of heart with you. You have shown for him this great loyal love, and you have given a son to him who is sitting on his throne as it is this day. ⁷ So then, O Yahweh, you are my God. You have made your servant king in place of David my father though I am a young boy. I do not know going out or coming in. ⁸ Your servant is in the middle of your people whom you have chosen; a great people who cannot be counted or numbered because of abundance. ⁹ Give to your servant a listening heart to judge your people, to discern between good and bad, because who is able to judge this, your difficult people?" ¹⁰ The word was good in the eyes of the Lord that Solomon had asked this thing. ¹¹ And God said to him, "Because you have asked this thing and you did not ask for yourself _⌊a long life_⌋* and you did not ask riches for yourself and you did not ask for the life of your enemies, but you have asked for yourself _⌊the ability to make wise judgments_⌋;*

¹² And it will happen that I will go from you and the Spirit of Yahweh will carry you up to where I do not know. Then I will come to tell Ahab, but he will not find you, and then he will kill me, even though your servant has feared Yahweh from my youth.

³ In the eighth year of his reign, while he was still a boy, he began to seek the God of David his ancestor.* And in the twelfth year he began to cleanse Judah and Jerusalem of the high places, the Asherahs, the idols, and the images.

¹ Remember your Creator in the days of your youth— before the days of trouble come and the years draw near when you will say, "I find no pleasure in them!"

²⁸ But that slave went out and* found one of his fellow slaves who owed him a hundred denarii, and taking hold of him, he began to choke him,* saying, 'Pay back everything that you owe!'

¹³ But he answered one of them and* said, 'Friend, I am not doing you wrong. Did you not come to an agreement with me for a denarius?

¹⁹ Show me the coin for the tax!" So they brought him a denarius.

¹⁵ For he will be great in the sight of the Lord, and he must never drink wine or beer, and he will be filled with the Holy Spirit while he is* still in his mother's womb.

³⁵ And on the next day, he took out two denarii and* gave them** to the innkeeper, and said, "Take care of him, and whatever you spend in addition, I will repay to you when I return.

¹⁵ and that from childhood you have known the holy writings that are able to make you wise for salvation through faith in Christ Jesus.

⁶ And I heard something like a voice in the midst of the four living creatures saying, "A quart of wheat for a denarius, and three quarts of barley for a denarius, and do not damage the olive oil and the wine!"

¹⁵ Laziness will bring on a deep sleep, and a person* of idleness will suffer hunger.

⁴⁹ Look! This was the iniquity of Sodom, your sister: Pride, abundance of food, and _⌊prosperous ease_⌋* was to her and to her daughters, and _⌊she did not sustain the needy and the poor_⌋.*

¹⁶ "But to what shall I compare this generation? It is like children sitting in the marketplaces who call out to one another, ¹⁷ saying,
'We played the flute for you and you did not dance; we sang a lament and you did not mourn.'

⁶ And about the eleventh hour he went out and* found others standing there and said to them, 'Why are you standing here the whole day unemployed?' ⁷ They said to him, 'Because no one hired us.' He said to them, 'You go also into the vineyard.'

²⁵ Now it was the third hour when they crucified him.

¹⁵ For these men are not drunk, as you assume, because it is the third hour of the day.

¹⁷ So he was discussing in the synagogue with the Jews and the God-fearing Gentiles,* and in the marketplace every day with those who happened to be there. ¹⁸ And even some of the Epicurean and Stoic philosophers were conversing with him, and some were saying, "What does this babbler want to say?" But others said,* "He appears to be a proclaimer of foreign deities," because he was proclaiming the good news about Jesus and the resurrection. ¹⁹ And they took hold of him and* brought him* to the Areopagus, saying, "May we learn what is this new teaching being proclaimed by you? ²⁰ For you are bringing some astonishing things to our ears. Therefore we want to know what _⌊these things mean_⌋."* ²¹ (Now all the Athenians and the foreigners who stayed there used to spend their time in nothing else than telling something or listening to something new.)

¹³ And at the same time also, going around from house to house, they learn to be idle, and not only idle, but also gossipy and busybodies, saying the things that are not necessary.

¹² in order that you may not be sluggish, but imitators of those who inherit the promises through faith and patience.

⁹ And as* Jesus was going away from there, he saw a man called Matthew sitting at the tax booth and said to him, "Follow me!" And he stood up and* followed him.

²³ And after* he arrived at the temple, the chief priests and the elders of the people came up to him while he* was teaching, saying, "By what authority are you doing these things? And who gave you this authority?" ²⁴ And Jesus answered and* said to them, "I also will ask you one question. If you tell the answer* to me, I also will tell you by what authority I am doing these things. ²⁵ From where was the baptism of John—from heaven or from men?" And they began to discuss* this* among themselves, saying, "If we say 'From heaven,' he will say to us, 'Why then did you not believe him?' ²⁶ But if we say, 'From men,' we are afraid of the crowd, because they all look upon John as a prophet." ²⁷ And they answered and* said to Jesus, "We do not know." And he said to them, "Neither will I tell you by what authority I am doing these things. ²⁸ "Now what do you think? A man had two sons. He approached* the first and* said, 'Son, go work in the vineyard today.' ²⁹ And he answered and* said, 'I do not want to!' But later he changed his mind and* went. ³⁰ And he approached the second* and* said the same thing. So he answered and* said, 'I will, sir,' and he did not go. ³¹ Which of the two did the will of his* father?" They said, "The first." Jesus said to them, "Truly I say to you that the tax collectors and the prostitutes are going ahead of you into the kingdom of God!

⁷ And when they* saw it,* they all began to complain,* saying, "He has gone in to find lodging with a man who is a sinner!" ⁸ And Zacchaeus stopped and* said to the Lord, "Behold, half of my possessions, Lord, I am giving to the poor, and if I have extorted anything from anyone, I am paying it* back four times as much!" ⁹ And Jesus said to him, "Today salvation has come to this house, because he too is a son of Abraham. ¹⁰ For the Son of Man came to seek and to save those who are lost."

¹⁶ Do you not know that to whomever you present yourselves as slaves for obedience, you are slaves to whomever you obey, whether sin, leading to death, or obedience, leading to righteousness? ¹⁷ But thanks be to God that you were slaves of sin, but you have obeyed from the heart the pattern of teaching to which you were entrusted, ¹⁸ and having been set free from sin, you became enslaved to righteousness. ¹⁹ (I am speaking in human terms because of the weakness of your flesh.) For just as you presented your members as slaves to immorality and lawlessness, leading to lawlessness, so now present your members as slaves to righteousness, leading to sanctification. ²⁰ For when you were slaves of sin, you were free with respect to righteousness. ²¹ Therefore what sort of fruit did you have then, about which you are now ashamed? For the end of those things is death. ²² But now, having been set free from sin and having been enslaved to God, you have your fruit leading to sanctification, and its end is eternal life.

¹¹ And some of you were these things, but you were washed, but you were sanctified, but you were justified in the name of the Lord Jesus* and by the Spirit of our God.

¹ Masters, grant your slaves justice and fairness, knowing that you also have a master in heaven.

¹² _⌊I give thanks_⌋* to the one who strengthens me, Christ Jesus our Lord, because he considered me faithful, placing me into ministry,* ¹³ although I* was formerly a blasphemer and a persecutor and a violent man, but I was shown mercy because I acted ignorantly in unbelief,

⁸ The saying is trustworthy, and I want you to insist concerning these things, so that those who have believed in God may be careful to engage in good deeds. These things are good and beneficial for people.

¹³ Therefore, _⌊when you have prepared your minds for action_⌋* by* being self-controlled, put your hope completely in the grace that will be brought to you at the revelation of Jesus Christ.

² in order to live the remaining time in the flesh no longer for human desires, but for the will of God. ³ For the time that has passed was sufficient _⌊to do what the Gentiles desire to do_⌋*, having lived in licentiousness, evil desires, drunkenness, carousing, drinking parties, and wanton idolatries,

¹ And Yahweh said to Abram, "Go out from your land and from your relatives, and from the house of your father, to the land that I will show you. ² And I will make you a great nation, and I will bless you, and I will make your name great. And you will be a blessing. ³ And I will bless those who bless you, and those who curse you I will curse. And all families of the earth will be blessed in you." ⁴ And Abram went out as Yahweh had told him, and Lot went with him. Now Abram _⌊was seventy-five years old_⌋* when he went out from Haran.

¹² And when he was in distress he entreated Yahweh his God and greatly humbled himself before the God of his ancestors* ¹³ and prayed to him. And God responded to him and heard his plea and let him return to Jerusalem to his kingdom. And Manasseh knew that Yahweh was God. ¹⁴ Then afterward he built an outer wall for the city of David west of the Gihon in the valley, and for the entrance into the Gate of the Fishes. And it encircled the Ophel and raised it very high. Then he placed strong commanders in all the fortified cities of Judah. ¹⁵ And he removed the foreign gods and the carved image from the house of Yahweh and all the altars which he built on the mountain of the house of Yahweh and in Jerusalem, and he threw them outside the city. ¹⁶ And he restored the altar of Yahweh and offered sacrifices of peace offerings and thank offerings upon it. And he commanded Judah to serve Yahweh, the God of Israel. ¹⁷ Nevertheless, the people offered at the high places, but only to Yahweh their God. ¹⁸ Now the remainder of the words of Manasseh and his prayer to his God and the words of the seers who spoke to him in the name of Yahweh, the God of Israel, behold, they are in the words of the kings of Israel. ¹⁹ And his prayer, and how he* responded to him, all his sin and his unfaithful acts, and the places where he built the high places and set up Asherahs and idols before he humbled himself, behold, they are written in the words of the seers.

⁴⁵ Now from the sixth hour, darkness came over all the land until the ninth hour.

³³ And when* the sixth hour came, darkness came over the whole land until the ninth hour. ³⁴ And at the ninth hour Jesus cried out with a loud voice, "Eloi, Eloi, lema sabachthani?" (which is translated, "My God, my God, _⌊why_⌋* have you forsaken me?")*

⁴⁴ And by this time it was about the sixth hour, and darkness came over the whole land until the ninth hour ⁴⁵ because* the light of the sun failed. And the curtain of the temple was torn apart down the middle. ⁴⁶ And Jesus, calling out with a loud voice, said, "Father, into your hands I entrust my spirit!"* And after he* said this, he expired.

³⁹ He said to them, "Come and you will see!" So they came and saw where he was staying, and they stayed with him that day (it was about the tenth hour).

⁶ And Jacob's well was there, so Jesus, because he had become tired from the journey, simply sat down at the well. It was about the sixth hour.

⁹ Jesus replied, Are there not twelve hours in the day? If anyone walks around in the daylight, he does not stumble, because he sees the light of this world.

¹ Now Peter and John were going up to the temple at the hour of prayer, the ninth hour.

³ About the ninth hour of the day, he saw clearly in a vision an angel of God coming to him and saying to him, "Cornelius."

⁹ And the next day, as* they were on their way and approaching the city, Peter went up on the housetop to pray at about the sixth hour.

²⁴ By faith Moses, when he* was grown up, refused to be called the son of Pharaoh's daughter, ²⁵ choosing instead to be mistreated with the people of God rather than to experience the transitory enjoyment of sin, ²⁶ considering _⌊reproach endured for the sake of Christ_⌋* greater wealth than the treasures of Egypt, for he was looking to the reward.

¹⁰ Whatever your hand finds to do—do it with all your might; for in Sheol—where you are going—no one works, plans, knows, or thinks about anything.

⁴⁰ But the other answered and* rebuked him, saying, "Do you not even fear God, because you are undergoing the same condemnation? ⁴¹ And we indeed justly, for we are receiving _⌊what we deserve_⌋* for what we have done. But this man has done nothing wrong!" ⁴² And he said, "Jesus, remember me when you come into your kingdom!" ⁴³ And he said to him, "Truly I say to you, today you will be with me in paradise."

⁴ It is necessary for us to do the deeds of the one who sent me while it is day; night is coming, when no one can work!

²¹ (Now all the Athenians and the foreigners who stayed there used to spend their time in nothing else than telling something or listening to something new.)

⁹ Therefore, go out to the places where the roads exit the city and invite to the wedding celebration as many people as you find.' ¹⁰ And those slaves went out into the roads and* gathered everyone whom they found, both evil and good, and the wedding celebration was filled _⌊with dinner guests_⌋.*

²¹ And the slave came and* reported these things to his master. Then the master of the house became angry and* said to his slave, 'Go out quickly into the streets and alleys of the city and bring in here the poor and crippled and blind and lame!' ²² And the slave said, 'Sir, what you ordered has been done, and there is still room.' ²³ And the master said to the slave, 'Go out into the highways and hedges and press them* to come in, so that my house will be filled!

¹⁶ saying, "What should we do with these men? For that a remarkable sign has taken place through them is evident to all those who live in Jerusalem, and we are not able to deny it!*

³⁰ Therefore although* God has overlooked the times of ignorance, he now commands all people everywhere to repent, ³¹ because he has set a day on which he is going to judge the world in righteousness by the man who he has appointed, having provided proof to everyone by* raising him from the dead."

¹⁴ How then will they call upon him in whom they have not believed? And how will they believe in him about whom they have not heard? And how will they hear about him without one who preaches to them? ¹⁵ And how will they preach, unless they are sent? Just as it is written, "How timely are the feet of those who bring good news of good things."* ¹⁶ But not all have obeyed the good news, for Isaiah says, "Lord, who has believed our report?"* ¹⁷ Consequently, faith comes by hearing, and hearing through the word about Christ.

¹¹ Therefore remember that formerly you, the Gentiles in the flesh, the so-called uncircumcision by the so-called circumcision in the flesh, made by hands, ¹² that you were at that time apart from Christ, alienated from the citizenship of Israel, and strangers to the covenants of promise, not having hope, and without God in the world.

⁵ (which in other generations was not made known to the sons of men as it has now been revealed to his holy apostles and prophets by the Spirit): ⁶ that the Gentiles are fellow heirs, and fellow members of the body, and fellow sharers of the promise in Christ Jesus through the gospel,

⁸ because you* know that each one of you, whatever good he should do,* this he will receive back from the Lord, whether slave or free.

²⁶ the mystery which has been hidden from the ages and from the generations, but has now been revealed to his saints,

¹⁰ For God is not unjust, so as to forget your work and the love which you demonstrated for his name by* having served the saints, and continuing to serve them.

² Then* Abram said, "O Yahweh, my Lord, what will you give me? _⌊I continue to be_⌋* childless, and _⌊my heir_⌋* is Eliezer of Damascus."

⁴ And Joseph found favor in his eyes and he served him. Then he appointed him* over his house and all that he owned he put into his hand. ⁵ And it happened that from the time he appointed him over his house and over all that he had, Yahweh blessed the house of the Egyptian on account of Joseph. And the blessing of Yahweh was upon all that he had in the house and in the field. ⁶ And he left all that he had in the hand of Joseph, and _⌊he did not worry about anything_⌋* except the food that he ate. Now Joseph was _⌊well built and handsome_⌋.*

¹⁹ So they approached the man who was over Joseph's house and spoke to him at the doorway of the house.

¹³ " 'You* shall not exploit your* neighbor, and you* shall not rob him; a hired worker's wage you* shall not _⌊withhold_⌋* overnight until morning.

¹⁵ On his day you shall give his wage, and the sun shall not go _⌊down_⌋,* because he is poor and _⌊his life depends on it_⌋;* do this so that he does not cry out against you to Yahweh, _⌊and you incur guilt_⌋.*

³⁹ And the enemy who sowed them is the devil, and the harvest is the end of the age, and the reapers are angels. ⁴⁰ Thus just as the darnel is gathered and burned* with fire, so it will be at the end of the age.

¹⁹ Now after a long time, the master of those slaves came and settled accounts with them.

³¹ Now when the Son of Man comes in his glory and all the angels with him, then he will sit on his glorious throne.

³ and Joanna the wife of Chuza (Herod's household manager), and Susanna, and many others who were helping to support them from their possessions.

⁷ And remain in the same house, eating and drinking _⌊whatever they provide_⌋,* for the worker is worthy of his pay. Do not move from house to house.

⁴² And the Lord said, "Who then is the faithful wise manager whom the master will put in charge over his servants to give them* their* food allowance at the right time?

¹ And he also said to the disciples, "A certain man was rich, who had a manager. And charges were brought to him that this person was squandering his possessions. ² And he summoned him and* said to him, 'What is this I hear about you? Give the account of your management, because you can no longer manage.'

⁶ who will reward each one according to his works: ⁷ to those who, by perseverance in good work, seek glory and honor and immortality, eternal life, ⁸ but to those who act from selfish ambition and who disobey the truth, but who obey unrighteousness, wrath and anger. ⁹ There will be affliction and distress for every _⌊human being_⌋* who does evil, of the Jew first and of the Greek, ¹⁰ but glory and honor and peace to everyone who does good, to the Jew first and to the Greek.

¹ Thus let a person consider us as servants of Christ and stewards of God's mysteries. ² In this case, moreover, it is sought in stewards that one be found faithful.

¹⁰ For we must all appear before the judgment seat of Christ, in order that each one may receive back the things through the body according to what he has done, whether good or bad.

⁷ For it is necessary for the overseer to be blameless as God's steward, not self-willed, not quick-tempered, not addicted to wine, not violent, not greedy for dishonest gain,

²⁸ thus also Christ, having been offered once in order to bear the sins of many, will appear for the second time without reference to sin to those who eagerly await him for salvation.

¹⁰ Just as each one has received a gift, use it for serving one another, as good stewards of the varied grace of God.

¹¹ And I saw a great white throne and the one who was seated on it, _⌊from whose presence_⌋* earth and heaven fled, and a place was not found for them. ¹² And I saw the dead—the great and the small—standing before the throne, and books were opened. And another book was opened, which is the book of life, and the dead were judged by what was written in the books, according to their deeds.

² And after* coming to an agreement with the workers for a denarius per day, he sent them into his vineyard.

³ For what does the scripture say? "And Abraham believed God, and it was credited to him for righteousness."* ⁴ Now to the one who works, his pay is not credited according to grace, but according to his due. ⁵ But to the one who does not work, but who believes in the one who justifies the ungodly, his faith is credited for righteousness, ⁶ just as David also speaks about the blessing of the person to whom God credits righteousness apart from works:

²⁰ Now the law came in as a side issue, in order that the trespass could increase, but where sin increased, grace was present in greater abundance, ²¹ so that just as sin reigned in death, so also grace would reign through righteousness to eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord.

⁶ to the praise of the glory of his grace that he bestowed on us in the beloved, ⁷ in whom we have redemption through his blood, the forgiveness of sins, according to the riches of his grace, ⁸ that he caused to abound to us in all wisdom and insight,

⁸ For by grace you are saved through faith, and this is not from yourselves, it is the gift of God; ⁹ it is not from works, so that no one can boast. ¹⁰ For we are his creation, created in Christ Jesus for good works, which God prepared beforehand, so that we may walk in them.

¹⁴ and the grace of our Lord abounded with the faith and love that are in Christ Jesus. ¹⁵ The saying is trustworthy and worthy of all acceptance: Christ Jesus came into the world to save sinners, of whom I am the foremost. ¹⁶ But because of this I was shown mercy, in order that in me foremost, Christ Jesus might demonstrate his total patience, for an example for those who are going to believe in him for eternal life.

³⁰ And the Pharisees and their scribes began to complain* to his disciples, saying, "Why do you eat and drink with the tax collectors and sinners?"

² And both the Pharisees and the scribes were complaining, saying, "This man welcomes sinners and eats with them!"

²⁸ But he became angry and did not want to go in. So his father came out and* began to implore* him. ²⁹ But he answered and* said to his father, 'Behold, so many years I have served you, and have never disobeyed your command! And you never gave me a young goat so that I could celebrate with my friends! ³⁰ But when this son of yours returned—who has consumed your assets with prostitutes—you killed the fattened calf for him!'

⁷ And when they* saw it,* they all began to complain,* saying, "He has gone in to find lodging with a man who is a sinner!"

² So when Peter went up to Jerusalem, those of the circumcision took issue with him, ³ saying, "You went to men _⌊who were uncircumcised_⌋* and ate with them!"

⁴⁵ But when* the Jews saw the crowds, they were filled with jealousy, and began contradicting what was being said by Paul by* reviling him.*

²¹ And he said to me, 'Go, because I will send you far away to the Gentiles!'" ²² Now they were listening to him until this word, and they raised their voices, saying, "Away with such a man from the earth! For it is not fitting for him to live!"

¹⁶ hindering us from speaking to the Gentiles in order that they may be saved, so that they always fill up their sins. But wrath has come upon them to the end.*

¹⁶ These people are grumblers, discontented, proceeding according to their* desires, and their mouths speaking pompous words, _⌊showing partiality to gain an advantage_⌋*.

² Yet* they seek me day by day, and they desire the knowledge of my ways like a nation that _⌊practiced_⌋* righteousness, and had not forsaken the judgment of its God; they ask me for _⌊righteous judgments_⌋,* they desire the closeness of God. ³ 'Why do we fast, and you do not see it? We humiliate our soul, and you do not notice it?' Look! You find delight on the day of your fast, and you oppress all your workers!

⁸ _⌊And when the sun rose_⌋,* God appointed a scorching east wind, and the sun beat down on Jonah's head and he grew faint. _⌊And he asked that he could die_⌋* and said, "My death is better than my life!"

³ saying to the _⌊priests of the house of Yahweh of hosts_⌋* and to the prophets, "Should I mourn in the fifth month and keep myself separate* as I have done for these many years?" ⁴ And the word of Yahweh of hosts came to me, saying, ⁵ "Say to all the people of the land and to the priests: 'When you fasted and lamented in the fifth and seventh months for these seventy years, did you really fast for me?

¹³ And you say, 'Look! This is a weariness,' and you sniff with disdain at it," says Yahweh of hosts. "And you bring the stolen, the lame, and the one that is sick—this you bring as the offering! Should I _⌊accept it_⌋* from your hand?" says Yahweh.

¹⁴ You have said, 'It is useless* to serve God! What is the gain if we keep* his requirements, and if we walk as mourners _⌊before_⌋* Yahweh of hosts?

⁵⁵ And when you see the south wind blowing, you say, 'There will be burning heat,' and it happens.

¹⁰ But when you are invited, go and* recline at the table in the last place, so that when the one who invited you comes, he will say to you, 'Friend, move up higher.' Then it will be an honor to you in the presence of all those who are reclining at the table with you. ¹¹ For everyone who exalts himself will be humbled, and the one who humbles himself will be exalted."

¹¹ The Pharisee stood and* prayed these things with reference to himself: 'God, I give thanks to you that I am not like other people—swindlers, unrighteous people, adulterers, or even like this tax collector! ¹² I fast twice a week; I give a tenth of all that I get.'

²² that is, the righteousness of God through faith in Jesus Christ* to all who believe. For there is no distinction, ²³ for all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God, ²⁴ being justified as a gift by his grace, through the redemption which is in Christ Jesus,

²⁷ Therefore, where is boasting? It has been excluded. By what kind of law? Of works? No, but by a law* of faith.

³⁰ since God is one, who will justify _⌊those who are circumcised_⌋* by faith and _⌊those who are uncircumcised_⌋* through faith.

³⁰ What then shall we say? That the Gentiles, who did not pursue righteousness, attained righteousness—even the righteousness that is by faith. ³¹ But Israel, pursuing the law of righteousness, did not attain to the law. ³² Why that? Because they did not pursue it by faith, but as if by works. They stumbled over the _⌊stone that causes people to stumble_⌋*,

¹ Brothers, the desire of my heart and my prayer to God on behalf of them is for their salvation. ² For I testify about them that they have a zeal for God, but not according to knowledge. ³ For ignoring the righteousness of God, and seeking to establish their own,* they did not subject themselves to the righteousness of God.

⁵ So in this way also at the present time, there is a remnant _⌊selected by grace_⌋*. ⁶ But if by grace, it is no longer by works, for otherwise grace would no longer be grace.

¹¹ Until the present hour we are both hungry and thirsty and poorly clothed and roughly treated and homeless,

²³ Are they servants of Christ?—I am speaking as though I were beside myself—I am more so, with far greater labors, with far more imprisonments, with beatings to a much greater degree, in danger of death many times. ²⁴ Five times I received at the hands of the Jews forty lashes less one. ²⁵ Three times I was beaten with rods. Once I received a stoning. Three times I was shipwrecked. A day and a night I have spent in the deep water. ²⁶ I have been on journeys many times, in dangers from rivers, in dangers from robbers, in dangers from my own people, in dangers from the Gentiles, in dangers in the city, in dangers in the wilderness, in dangers at sea, in dangers because of false brothers, ²⁷ with toil and hardship, often in sleepless nights, with hunger and thirst, often going hungry, in cold and poorly clothed. ²⁸ Apart from these external things, there is the pressure on me every day of the anxiety about all the churches.

⁶ that the Gentiles are fellow heirs, and fellow members of the body, and fellow sharers of the promise in Christ Jesus through the gospel,

¹¹ For the sun rises with its burning heat and dries up the grass, and its flower falls off, and the beauty of its appearance is lost. So also the rich person in his pursuits* will wither away.

²⁵ Far be it from you to do such a thing as this, to kill the righteous with the wicked, that* the righteous would be as the wicked! Far be it from you! Will not the Judge of all the earth do justice?"

⁸ And he goes on the road in company with instigators of mischief, and walks with men of wickedness. ⁹ Indeed, he says, 'A man does not profit when he takes delight in God.' ¹⁰ "Therefore, listen to me, _⌊people who have sense_⌋:* far be it from God _⌊that he should commit wickedness_⌋* and that Shaddai _⌊should do wrong_⌋.* ¹¹ Indeed, he will repay according to a human being's deeds, and according to a man's way he will let it happen to him. ¹² What's more, God truly does not act wickedly, and Shaddai does not pervert justice.

¹⁷ Shall he who hates justice really govern? Or will you* declare the Righteous One, the Mighty, guilty?— ¹⁸ the one who says to a king, 'You worthless man,' to noblemen, 'You wicked man,'

² "Do you think this is justice when you say, '_⌊I am right_⌋* before God'?

⁸ "Indeed, would you annul my justice? Would you condemn me, so that you might be righteous?

¹² And he said to him, 'Friend, how did you come in here, not having wedding clothes?' But _⌊he could say nothing_⌋.*

⁵⁰ And Jesus said to him, "Friend, do that* for which you have come."* Then they came up and* laid hands on Jesus and arrested him.

¹⁴ What then shall we say? There is no injustice with God, is there?* May it never be! ¹⁵ For to Moses he says, "I will have mercy on whomever I have mercy, and I will have compassion on whomever I have compassion."*

²⁰ On the contrary, O man, who are you who answers back to God? Will what is molded say to the one who molded it, "Why did you make me like this"?*

¹⁶ Then he said, "Come with me! Look at my zeal for Yahweh!" So he let him ride in his chariot.

³⁰ Yahweh said to Jehu, "Because you have done well by doing right in my eyes and you have done to the house of Ahab according to all that was in my heart; therefore, sons of the fourth generation will sit for you on the throne of Israel." ³¹ But Jehu was not careful to walk in the law of Yahweh God of Israel with all his heart; he did not turn from the sins of Jeroboam by which he caused Israel to sin.

¹⁸ "Son of man,* Nebuchadnezzar the king of Babylon, he made his army labor hard against Tyre. Every head was rubbed bare, and every shoulder was rubbed raw, but* a wage was not paid for him and for his army from Tyre for the labor that he did against it." ¹⁹ Therefore thus says the Lord Yahweh: "Look! I am giving to Nebuchadnezzar the king of Babylon the land of Egypt, and he will carry its wealth away, and he will plunder its plunder, and he will loot its loot, and it will be a wage for his army. ²⁰ As his wages that he worked for, I will give to him the land of Egypt, because they worked for me," _⌊declares_⌋* the Lord Yahweh.

² Therefore whenever you practice charitable giving, do not sound a trumpet in front of you, as the hypocrites do in the synagogues and in the streets, in order that they may be praised by people. Truly I say to you, they have received their reward in full!

⁶ But whenever you pray, enter into your inner room and shut your door and* pray to your Father who is in secret, and your Father who sees in secret will reward you.

¹⁶ "Whenever you fast, do not be sullen like the hypocrites, for they make their faces unrecognizable in order that they may be seen fasting by people. Truly I say to you, they have received their reward in full!

³¹ But he said to him, 'Child, you are always with me, and _⌊everything I have belongs to you_⌋.*

²⁵ But Abraham said, 'Child, remember that you received your good things during your life, and Lazarus likewise bad things. But now he is comforted here, but you are suffering pain.

² just as you have given him authority over all flesh, in order that he would give eternal life to them—everyone whom you have given him.

⁴ May it never be! But let God be true but every human being a liar, just as it is written,
"In order that you may be justified in your words, and may prevail when you are* judged."*

¹⁹ Now we know that whatever the law says, it speaks to those under the law, in order that every mouth may be closed and the whole world may become accountable to God.

¹⁹ And he said, "I myself will cause all my goodness to pass over before you, and I will proclaim the name of Yahweh before you, and I will be gracious to whom I will be gracious, and I will show compassion to whom I will show compassion."

⁶ For you are a holy people for Yahweh your God; Yahweh your God has chosen you to be for him a people, a treasured possession from among all the peoples that are on the face* of the earth. ⁷ "Yahweh loved you and chose you not _⌊because of your great number_⌋* exceeding all other peoples, for you are fewer than all of the peoples, ⁸ but* _⌊because of_⌋* the love of Yahweh for you and because of his keeping of the sworn oath that he swore to your ancestors,* Yahweh brought you out with a strong hand and redeemed you from the house of slavery, from the hand of Pharaoh, the king of Egypt.

⁹ _⌊Take care_⌋* so that there* will not be _⌊a thought of wickedness_⌋* in your heart, _⌊saying_⌋,* 'The seventh year, the year of the remission of debt is near,' _⌊and you view your needy neighbor with hostility_⌋,* and so you do not give to him, and he might cry out against you to Yahweh, and _⌊you would incur guilt against yourself_⌋.*

⁵⁴ The most refined and the very sensitive* man among you _⌊shall be mean with his brother_⌋* and _⌊against his beloved wife_⌋* and against the rest* of his children that he has left over,

⁴ But Yahweh the God of Israel chose me from all of the house of my father to be king over Israel forever, for he chose Judah as leader, and in the house of Judah, the house of my father, and among the sons of my father he took pleasure in me to reign over all Israel. ⁵ And from all my sons—for Yahweh has given many sons to me—he has chosen Solomon my son to sit on the throne of the kingdom of Yahweh over Israel.

⁶ Do not eat the bread of _⌊the stingy_⌋,* and do not desire his delicacies.

²² He who hurries for wealth is _⌊a man with an evil eye_⌋,* but he does not know that poverty will come upon him.

⁵ "I have made the earth with humankind and animals* that are on the face of the earth by my great power and by my outstretched arm, and I give it to whomever is right in my eyes. ⁶ And now I myself have given all these lands into the hand of Nebuchadnezzar the king of Babylon, my servant, and also the animals* of the field I have given to him to serve him. ⁷ And all the nations will serve him, and his son, and _⌊his grandson_⌋,* until the coming of the time of _⌊his own_⌋* land. Then many nations and great kings will let him work.

¹ And this* _⌊was greatly displeasing_⌋* to Jonah, and _⌊he became furious_⌋.* ² And he prayed to Yahweh and said, "O Yahweh, was this not _⌊what I said_⌋* while I was in my homeland? Therefore _⌊I originally fled_⌋* to Tarshish, because I knew that you are a gracious and compassionate God, slow to anger _⌊and having great steadfast love_⌋,* and one who relents concerning calamity.* ³ And so then, Yahweh, please take my life from me, because for me death is better than life!" ⁴ And Yahweh said, "_⌊Is it right for you to be angry_⌋?"*

²³ But if your eye is evil, your whole body will be dark. Therefore if the light in you is darkness, how great is the darkness!

²⁵ At that time Jesus answered and* said, "I praise you, Father, Lord of heaven and earth, because you have hidden these things from the wise and intelligent, and have revealed them to young children.*

²² adulteries, acts of greed, malicious deeds, deceit, licentiousness, _⌊envy_⌋,* abusive speech, pride, foolishness.

¹⁵ For to Moses he says, "I will have mercy on whomever I have mercy, and I will have compassion on whomever I have compassion."* ¹⁶ Consequently therefore, _⌊it does not depend on the_⌋* one who wills or on the one who runs, but on God who shows mercy. ¹⁷ For the scripture says to Pharaoh, "For this very reason I have raised you up, so that I may demonstrate my power in you, and so that my name might be proclaimed in all the earth."* ¹⁸ Consequently therefore, he has mercy on whomever he wishes, and he hardens whomever he wishes. ¹⁹ Therefore you will say to me, "Why then does he still find fault? For who has resisted* his will? ²⁰ On the contrary, O man, who are you who answers back to God? Will what is molded say to the one who molded it, "Why did you make me like this"?* ²¹ Or does the potter not have authority over the clay, to make from the same lump a vessel that is for _⌊honorable use_⌋* and one that is for _⌊ordinary use_⌋*? ²² And what if God, wanting to demonstrate his wrath and to make known his power, endured with much patience vessels of wrath prepared for destruction? ²³ And he did so* in order that he could make known the riches of his glory upon vessels of mercy that he prepared beforehand for glory, ²⁴ us whom he also called, not only from the Jews but also from the Gentiles?

⁷ For who concedes you superiority? And what do you have that you did not receive? But if indeed you received it, why do you boast as if you* did not receive it?

¹¹ in whom also we were chosen, having been predestined according to the purpose of the One who works all things according to the counsel of his will,

¹ And you, _⌊although you were dead_⌋** in your trespasses and sins,

⁵ and we being dead in trespasses, he made us alive together with Christ (by grace you are saved),

¹⁸ By his* will he gave birth to us through the message of truth, so that we should be a kind of first fruits of his creatures.

⁹ Brothers, do not complain against one another, in order that you may not be judged. Behold, the judge stands before the doors!

¹³ "Enter through the narrow gate, because broad is the gate and spacious is the road that leads to destruction, and there are many who enter through it,

¹¹ But I say to you that many will come from east and west and _⌊be seated at the banquet_⌋* with Abraham and Isaac and Jacob in the kingdom of heaven. ¹² But the sons of the kingdom will be thrown out into the outer darkness. In that place there will be weeping and gnashing of teeth!"

³⁰ But many who are first will be last, and the last first.

³¹ Which of the two did the will of his* father?" They said, "The first." Jesus said to them, "Truly I say to you that the tax collectors and the prostitutes are going ahead of you into the kingdom of God!

¹⁴ For many are called but few are chosen."

³¹ But many who are first will be last, and the last first."

⁴⁷ _⌊For this reason_⌋* I tell you, her sins—which were many—have been forgiven, for she loved much. But the one to whom little is forgiven loves little."

²⁸ In that place there will be weeping and gnashing of teeth, when you see Abraham and Isaac and Jacob and all the prophets in the kingdom of God, but yourselves thrown outside! ²⁹ And they will come from east and west, and from north and south, and will recline at the table in the kingdom of God. ³⁰ And behold, some are last who will be first, and some are first who will be last."

²⁴ For I say to you that none of those persons who were invited will taste my banquet!'"

⁷ I tell you that in the same way, there will be more joy in heaven over one sinner who repents than over ninety-nine righteous people who have no need of repentance.

¹⁷ So Jesus answered and* said, "Were not ten cleansed? And where are the nine? ¹⁸ Was no one found to turn back and* give praise to God except this foreigner?"

¹⁹ So the Pharisees said to one another, "You see that you are accomplishing nothing! Behold, the world has gone after him." ²⁰ Now some Greeks were among those who had gone up in order to worship at the feast. ²¹ So these approached Philip, who was from Bethsaida in Galilee, and began asking him saying, "Sir, we want to see Jesus." ²² Philip went and told Andrew. Andrew and Philip went and told Jesus.

²⁰ Now the law came in as a side issue, in order that the trespass could increase, but where sin increased, grace was present in greater abundance,

³⁰ And those whom he predestined, these he also called, and those whom he called, these he also justified, and those whom he justified, these he also glorified.

³⁰ What then shall we say? That the Gentiles, who did not pursue righteousness, attained righteousness—even the righteousness that is by faith.

¹³ And because of this we also give thanks to God constantly, that when you* received God's word _⌊that you heard_⌋* from us, you accepted it not as the word of men, but as it truly is, the word of God, which also is at work in you who believe.

¹³ But we ought to give thanks to God always concerning you, brothers dearly loved by the Lord, because God has chosen you as first fruits for salvation by the sanctification of the Spirit and faith in the truth, ¹⁴ for which purpose he called* you through our gospel for the obtaining of the glory of our Lord Jesus Christ.

²³ because if anyone is a hearer of the message and not a doer, this one is like someone* staring at _⌊his own face_⌋* in a mirror, ²⁴ for he looks at himself and goes away and immediately forgets what sort of person he was. ²⁵ But the one who looks into the perfect law of liberty and continues to do it, not being a forgetful hearer but a doer who acts, this one will be blessed _⌊in what he does_⌋*.

¹⁷ Then Yahweh said, "Shall I conceal from Abraham what I am going to do?

¹¹ And he answered and* said to them, "To you it has been granted to know the mysteries of the kingdom of heaven, but to those people it has not been granted.

¹³ Now when* Jesus came to the region of Caesarea _⌊Philippi_⌋,* he began asking* his disciples, saying, "Who do people say that the Son of Man is?"

³² Now they were on the road going up to Jerusalem, and Jesus was going on ahead of them. And they were astounded, but those who were following him* were afraid. And taking aside the twelve again, he began to tell them the things that were about to happen to him: ³³ "Behold, we are going up to Jerusalem, and the Son of Man will be handed over to the chief priests and the scribes, and they will condemn him to death and will hand him over to the Gentiles. ³⁴ And they will mock him and spit on him and flog him and kill him,* and after three days he will rise."

³¹ And taking aside the twelve, he said to them, "Behold, we are going up to Jerusalem, and all the things that are written by the prophets with reference to the Son of Man will be accomplished. ³² For he will be handed over to the Gentiles and will be mocked and mistreated and spit on, ³³ and after* flogging him* they will kill him, and on the third day he will rise." ³⁴ And they understood none of these things, and this saying was concealed from them, and they did not comprehend the things that were said.

¹² On the next day the large crowd who had come to the feast, when they* heard that Jesus was coming to Jerusalem,

¹⁵ No longer do I call you slaves, because the slave does not know what his master is doing. But I have called you friends, because everything that I have heard from my Father I have revealed to you.

⁴¹ not to all the people but to us who had been chosen beforehand by God as witnesses, who ate and drank with him after he rose from the dead.

My God, my God why have you forsaken me? Why are you far from helping me, far from the words of my groaning? ² O my God, I call by day and you do not answer, and by night but I have no rest.* ³ Yet you are holy, enthroned on the praises of Israel. ⁴ Our ancestors* trusted you; they trusted and you delivered them. ⁵ They cried to you and were saved; they trusted you and were not ashamed. ⁶ But I am a worm and not a man, scorned by humankind and despised by people. ⁷ All who see me mock me. They open wide their lips; they shake the head, saying: ⁸ "_⌊He trusts Yahweh_⌋.* Let him rescue him. Let him deliver him because he delights in him." ⁹ Yet you took me from the belly; you made me trust while on my mother's breasts. ¹⁰ On you I was cast from the womb. From my mother's belly you have been my God. ¹¹ Do not be far from me because trouble is near; because there is no helper. ¹² Many bulls have encircled me; mighty bulls of Bashan have surrounded me. ¹³ They open their mouth against me like a lion tearing and roaring. ¹⁴ I am poured out like water, and all my bones are out of joint. My heart is like wax; it is melted _⌊within me_⌋.* ¹⁵ My strength is dry like a potsherd, and my tongue is sticking to my jaws; and you have placed me in the dust of death. ¹⁶ Because dogs have surrounded me; a gang of evildoers has encircled me. O my help, hasten to help me. ²⁰ Rescue my life from the sword, my only life from the power of the dogs.* ²¹ Save me from the mouth of the lion, and from the horns of the wild oxen answer me. ²² I will tell your name to my brothers; inside the assembly I will praise you. ²³ You who revere Yahweh, praise him! Glorify him, all you seed of Jacob, and be in awe of him, all you seed of Israel, ²⁴ because he has not despised nor abhorred the affliction of the afflicted, and has not hid his face from him; but he listened to him when he cried for help. ²⁵ From you is my praise. In the great assembly, I will pay my vows before those who revere him. ²⁶ The afflicted will eat and will be satisfied. Those who seek him will praise Yahweh. May your* heart live forever. ²⁷ All the ends of the earth will remember and turn to Yahweh. All the families of the nations will worship before you. ²⁸ Because the kingship belongs to Yahweh, and he rules over the nations. ²⁹ All the _⌊healthy ones_⌋* of the earth will eat and worship. Before him all of those descending into the dust will kneel, even he who cannot keep his soul alive. ³⁰ Descendants* will serve him. Regarding the Lord, it will be told to the next generation. ³¹ They will come and tell his saving* deeds to a people yet to be born, that he has done it.

Save me, O God, because waters have come up to my neck.* ² I sink in the mud of the deep, and there is no foothold. I have come to watery depths, and the torrent floods over me. ³ I am weary with my calling out; my throat is parched. My eyes are exhausted in my waiting for my God. ⁴ More numerous than the hairs of my head are those hating me without a cause. Those who are destroying me—my enemies wrongfully*— are mighty. What I did not steal, I then must restore. ⁵ O God, _⌊you yourself know_⌋* my foolishness, and my guilty deeds are not hidden from you. ⁶ Let those who wait for you not be put to shame because of me, O Lord Yahweh of hosts. Let those who seek you not be disgraced because of me, O God of Israel. ⁷ Because on account of you I have borne reproach; disgrace has covered my face. ⁸ I have become a stranger to my brothers and a foreigner to my mother's sons, ⁹ because the zeal for your house* has consumed me, and the reproaches of those reproaching you have fallen on me. ¹⁰ When I wept in the fasting of my soul, it became reproaches for me. ¹¹ When I made sackcloth my clothing, I became for them a byword. ¹² Those sitting at the gate talk about me as also* the songs of the drunkards. ¹³ But as for me, my prayer is to you, O Yahweh, for a favorable time, O God, according to the abundance of your loyal love. Answer me with the faithfulness of your salvation. ¹⁴ Deliver me from the mud and do not let me sink. Let me be delivered from those who hate me and from the watery depths. ¹⁵ Do not let the torrent of waters flood over me, or the deep swallow me, or the pit close its mouth over me. ¹⁶ Answer me, O Yahweh, because your loyal love is good; according to your abundant mercies, turn to me, ¹⁷ and do not hide your face from your servant. Because I am in trouble, answer me quickly. ¹⁸ Draw near to my soul; redeem it. Because of my enemies, ransom me. ¹⁹ You know my reproach, my shame and my disgrace. _⌊Fully known_⌋* to you are all my adversaries. ²⁰ Reproach has broken my heart and I am sick. And I hoped for sympathy, but there was none, and for comforters, but I found none. ²¹ They also gave me gall for food,* and for my thirst they gave me vinegar to drink. ²² Let their table before them be a trap, and their times of peace a snare. ²³ Let their eyes be dark so they cannot see, and make their loins continually tremble. ²⁴ Pour out your indignation on them, and let your burning anger overtake them. ²⁵ Let their camp be desolate. O God seekers, let your heart revive,* ³³ because Yahweh hears the needy and does not despise his own who are prisoners. ³⁴ Let heavens and earth praise him, the seas and all that moves in them, ³⁵ because God will save Zion and build the cities of Judah, that they may dwell there and possess it. ³⁶ And the offspring of his servants will inherit it, and those who love his name will abide in it.

¹ Who has believed our message, and to whom has the arm of Yahweh been revealed? ² For* he went* up like a shoot before him, and like a root from dry ground. He had no form and no majesty that* we should see him, and no appearance that* we should take pleasure in him. ³ He was despised and rejected by men, a man of suffering, and acquainted with* sickness, and like _⌊one from whom others hide their faces_⌋,* he was despised, and we did not hold him in high regard. ⁴ However, he was the one who lifted up our sicknesses, and he carried our pain, yet* we ourselves assumed him stricken, struck down by God and afflicted. ⁵ But* he was pierced* because of our transgressions, crushed because of our iniquities; the chastisement for* our peace* was upon him, and by his wounds* _⌊we were healed_⌋.* ⁶ All of us have wandered about like sheep; we each have turned to his own way; and Yahweh let fall on him the iniquity of us all. ⁷ He was oppressed and afflicted, yet* he did not open his mouth; he was brought like a lamb to the slaughter, and like a sheep is dumb before its shearers, so* he did not open his mouth. ⁸ He was taken by restraint of justice, and who concerned himself with his generation? For he was cut off from the land of the living; he received a blow because of the transgression of my people. ⁹ He made* his grave with the wicked, and with the rich in his death, although he had done no violence, and there was no deceit in his mouth. ¹⁰ Yet* Yahweh was pleased to crush him; he _⌊made him sick_⌋.* If she* places* his life a guilt offering,* he will see offspring. He will prolong days, and the will of Yahweh will succeed in his hand. ¹¹ From the trouble of his life* he will see;* he will be satisfied. In his knowledge, the righteous one, my servant, shall declare many righteous,* and he is the one who will bear their iniquities. ¹² Therefore, I will divide to him a portion among the many,* and with the strong ones he will divide bounty, _⌊because_⌋* he poured his life out to death and was counted with the transgressors; and* he was the one who bore the sin of many and will intercede for the transgressors.

²⁴ "Seventy weeks is decreed for your people and _⌊for your holy city_⌋,* to put an end to the transgression and to seal up sin* and to make atonement for guilt and to bring in everlasting righteousness and to seal vision and prophet and to anoint _⌊the most holy place_⌋.* ²⁵ And you must know and you must understand* that from the time of the going out of the word to restore and build Jerusalem until an anointed* one—a leader—will be _⌊seven weeks and sixty-two weeks_⌋;* it will be restored and will be built with streets and a moat, but _⌊in a time of oppression_⌋.* ²⁶ "And after the sixty and two weeks an anointed one* shall be cut off, and _⌊he shall have nothing_⌋,* and the people of the coming leader will destroy the city and the sanctuary,* and its end will be with the flood and on to the end there shall be war; these desolations are determined. ²⁷ And he will make a strong covenant with the many for one week, but in half of the week he will let cease sacrifice and offering _⌊and in its place_⌋* a desolating abomination comes even until _⌊the determined complete destruction_⌋* is poured out on the desolator."

²¹ From that time on Jesus began to show his disciples that he must go to Jerusalem and suffer many things from the elders and chief priests and scribes, and be killed, and be raised on the third day.

²² Now as* they were gathering in Galilee, Jesus said to them, "The Son of Man is going to be betrayed into the hands of men,* ²³ and they will kill him, and on the third day he will be raised." And they were extremely distressed.

² "You know that after two days the Passover takes place, and the Son of Man will be handed over* in order to be crucified."

⁶⁶ What do you think?" And they answered and* said, "_⌊He deserves death_⌋!"*

¹ Now when it* was early morning, all the chief priests and the elders of the people took counsel against Jesus in order to put him to death.

⁶⁴ You have heard the blasphemy! What _⌊do you think_⌋?"* And they all condemned him _⌊as deserving death_⌋.* ⁶⁵ And some began to spit on him and to cover his face and to strike him with their fists, and to say to him "Prophesy!" And the officers received him with slaps in the face.*

⁷¹ And they said, "Why do we have need of further testimony? For we ourselves have heard it* from his mouth!"

²³ this man, delivered up by the determined plan and foreknowledge of God, you executed by* nailing to a cross* through the hand of lawless men.

²⁷ For in truth both Herod and Pontius Pilate, together with the Gentiles and the peoples of Israel, assembled together in this city against your holy servant Jesus whom you anointed, ²⁸ to do all that your hand and plan* had predestined to take place.

⁷ All who see me mock me. They open wide their lips; they shake the head, saying: ⁸ "_⌊He trusts Yahweh_⌋.* Let him rescue him. Let him deliver him because he delights in him."

¹⁶ Among the ungodly of the mockers at feasts,* they gnashed at me with their teeth.

¹⁹ Your dead shall live; _⌊their corpses_⌋* shall rise. Wake up and sing for joy, dwellers of the dust, for your dew is _⌊celestial dew_⌋,* and the earth will give birth to dead spirits.*

³ He was despised and rejected by men, a man of suffering, and acquainted with* sickness, and like _⌊one from whom others hide their faces_⌋,* he was despised, and we did not hold him in high regard.

² He will revive us after two days; on the third day he will raise us up, that we may live in his presence.*

⁴⁰ For just as Jonah was in the belly of the huge fish three days and three nights, so the Son of Man will be in the heart of the earth three days and three nights.

⁶⁷ Then they spat in his face and struck him with their fists, and they slapped him,* ⁶⁸ saying, "Prophesy for us, you Christ! Who is it who hit you?"

² And after* tying him up, they led him* away and handed him* over to Pilate the governor. ³ Then when* Judas, the one who had betrayed him, saw that he had been condemned, he regretted what he had done* and* returned the thirty silver coins to the chief priests and elders, ⁴ saying, "I have sinned by* betraying innocent blood!" But they said, "What is that to us? You see to it!"* ⁵ And throwing the silver coins into the temple he departed. And he went away and* hanged himself. ⁶ But the chief priests took the silver coins and* said, "It is not permitted to put them into the temple treasury, because it is _⌊blood money_⌋."* ⁷ And after* taking counsel, they purchased _⌊with_⌋* them the Potter's Field, for a burial place for strangers. ⁸ (For this reason that field has been called the Field of Blood until today.) ⁹ Then what was spoken by the prophet Jeremiah was fulfilled, who said, "And they took the thirty silver coins, the price of the one who had been priced, on whom a price had been set by the sons of Israel, ¹⁰ and they gave them for the potter's field, just as the Lord directed me."*

²⁷ Then the soldiers of the governor took Jesus into the governor's residence and* gathered the whole cohort to him. ²⁸ And they stripped him and* put a scarlet military cloak around him, ²⁹ and weaving a crown of thorns, they put it* on his head, and put* a reed in his right hand. And kneeling down before him, they mocked him, saying, "Hail, king of the Jews!" ³⁰ And they spat on him and* took the reed and repeatedly struck* him* on his head. ³¹ And when they had mocked him, they stripped him of the military cloak and put his own clothes on him, and led him away in order to crucify him.*

⁶⁵ And some began to spit on him and to cover his face and to strike him with their fists, and to say to him "Prophesy!" And the officers received him with slaps in the face.*

¹ And as soon as morning came, after* formulating a plan, the chief priests, with the elders and scribes and the whole Sanhedrin, tied up Jesus, led him* away, and handed him* over to Pilate.

¹⁶ So the soldiers led him away into the palace (that is, the governor's residence) and called together the whole cohort. ¹⁷ And they put a purple cloak on him, and after* weaving a crown of thorns they placed it* on him. ¹⁸ And they began to greet him, "Hail, king of the Jews!" ¹⁹ And they repeatedly struck* him on the head with a reed, and were spitting on him, and _⌊they knelt down_⌋* and* did obeisance to him. ²⁰ And when they had mocked him, they stripped him of the purple cloak and put his own clothes* on him, and they led him out so that they could crucify him.

²⁹ And those who passed by reviled him, shaking their heads and saying, "Aha! The one who would destroy the temple and rebuild it* in three days, ³⁰ save yourself by* coming down from the cross!" ³¹ In the same way also the chief priests, along with the scribes, were mocking him* to one another, saying, "He saved others; he is not able to save himself!

¹ And the whole assembly of them rose up and* brought him before Pilate. ² And they began to accuse him, saying, "We have found this man misleading our nation and forbidding us* to pay taxes to Caesar, and saying he himself is Christ, a king!" ³ And Pilate asked him, saying, "Are you the king of the Jews?" And he answered him and* said, "You say so." ⁴ So Pilate said to the chief priests and the crowds, "I find no basis for an accusation against this man." ⁵ But they insisted, saying, "He incites the people, teaching throughout the whole of Judea and beginning from Galilee as far as here."

¹¹ And Herod with his soldiers also treated him with contempt, and after* mocking him* and* dressing him* in glistening clothing, he sent him back to Pilate.

⁴⁶ and said to them, "Thus it is written that the Christ would suffer and would rise from the dead on the third day,

²⁸ Then they brought Jesus from Caiaphas to the governor's residence. Now it was early, and they did not enter into the governor's residence so that they would not be defiled, but could eat the Passover. ²⁹ So Pilate came outside to them and said, "What accusation do you bring against this man?" ³⁰ They answered and said to him, "If this man were not doing evil, we would not have handed him over to you!" ³¹ So Pilate said to them, "You take him and judge him according to your law!" The Jews said to him, "It is not permitted for us to kill anyone," ³² in order that the word of Jesus would be fulfilled that he had spoken, indicating by what sort of death he was going to die. ³³ Then Pilate entered again into the governor's residence and summoned Jesus and said to him, "Are you the king of the Jews?" ³⁴ Jesus replied, "Do you say this from yourself, or have others said this* to you about me?" ³⁵ Pilate replied, "I am not a Jew, am I?* Your people and the chief priests handed you over to me! What have you done?" ³⁶ Jesus replied, "My kingdom is not of this world. If my kingdom were of this world, my servants would be fighting so that I would not be handed over to the Jews. But now my kingdom is not from here." ³⁷ Then Pilate said to him, "So then you are a king!" Jesus replied, "You say that I am a king. For this reason I was born, and for this reason I have come into the world: in order that I can testify to the truth. Everyone who is of the truth hears my voice." ³⁸ Pilate said to him, "What is truth?"
And when he* had said this, he went out again to the Jews and said to them, "I find no basis for an accusation against him.

¹ So then Pilate took Jesus and had him flogged.* ² And the soldiers wove a crown of thorns and placed it* on his head, and put a purple robe on him, ³ and were coming up to him and saying, "Hail, king of the Jews!" and were giving him slaps in the face. ⁴ And Pilate came outside again and said to them, "Behold, I am bringing him outside to you, so that you will know that I find no basis for an accusation against him."

¹³ The God of Abraham and of Isaac* and of Jacob,* the God of our fathers, has glorified his servant Jesus, whom you handed over and denied in the presence of Pilate, after* he had decided to release him.* ¹⁴ But you denied the Holy and Righteous One and demanded that a man—a murderer—be granted to you. ¹⁵ And you killed the originator of life, whom God raised from the dead, of which we are witnesses! ¹⁶ And on the basis of faith in his name, his name has made this man strong, whom you see and know, and the faith that is through him has given him this perfect health in the presence of you all.

²⁷ For in truth both Herod and Pontius Pilate, together with the Gentiles and the peoples of Israel, assembled together in this city against your holy servant Jesus whom you anointed,

¹¹ And he came to us and took Paul's belt. Tying up his own feet and hands, he said, "This is what the Holy Spirit says: 'In this way the Jews in Jerusalem will tie up the man whose belt this is, and will deliver him* into the hands of the Gentiles.'"

³ For I passed on to you _⌊as of first importance_⌋* what I also received, that Christ died for our sins according to the scriptures, ⁴ and that he was buried, and that he was raised up on the third day according to the scriptures, ⁵ and that he appeared to Cephas, then to the twelve, ⁶ then he appeared to more than five hundred brothers at once, the majority of whom remain until now, but some have fallen asleep. ⁷ Then he appeared to James, then to all the apostles,

¹¹ And when they* came into the house, they saw the child with Mary his mother, and they fell down and* worshiped him. And opening their treasure boxes, they offered him gifts of gold and frankincense and myrrh.

²¹ And going on from there, he saw two other brothers, James the son of Zebedee and his brother John, in the boat with their father Zebedee, mending their nets, and he called them.

² And behold, a leper approached and* worshiped him, saying, "Lord, if you are willing, you are able to make me clean."

³³ So those in the boat worshiped him, saying, "Truly you are the Son of God!"

²⁵ But she came and* knelt down before him, saying, "Lord, help me!"

⁵⁶ among whom were Mary Magdalene, and Mary the mother of James and Joseph, and the mother of the sons of Zebedee.

¹⁷ And when they* saw him, they worshiped him,* but some doubted.

³⁵ And James and John, the sons of Zebedee, came up to him and* said to him, "Teacher, we want you to do for us whatever we ask you." ³⁶ And he said to them, "What do you want that I do* for you?" ³⁷ So they said to him, "Grant to us that we may sit one at your right hand and one at your left in your glory." ³⁸ But Jesus said to them, "You do not know what you are asking! Are you able to drink the cup that I drink, or to be baptized with the baptism that I am baptized with?" ³⁹ And they said to him, "We are able." So Jesus said to them, "You will drink the cup that I drink, and you will be baptized with the baptism that I am baptized with, ⁴⁰ but to sit at my right hand or at my left is not mine to grant, but is for those for whom it has been prepared." ⁴¹ And when they* heard this,* the ten began to be indignant about James and John. ⁴² And Jesus called them to himself and* said to them, "You know that those who are considered to rule over the Gentiles lord it over them, and their people in high positions exercise authority over them. ⁴³ But it is not like this among you! But whoever wants to become great among you must be your servant, ⁴⁴ and whoever wants to be most prominent among you must be the slave of all. ⁴⁵ For even the Son of Man did not come to be served, but to serve, and to give his life as a ransom for many."

⁴⁰ And there were also women observing from a distance, among whom were Mary Magdalene, and Mary the mother of James the younger* and Joses,* and Salome,

¹⁹ Bathsheba came to King Solomon to speak to him concerning Adonijah, and the king got up to meet her, bowed down to her, and then sat on his throne. Then he set up a throne for the king's mother, and she sat on his right.

⁵ Yahweh appeared to Solomon at Gibeon in a dream at night, and God said, "Ask what I should give to you."

³ And the king said to her, "What is it, Queen Esther? What is your request? It will be given to you—even half the kingdom."

⁹ Kings' daughters are among your noble ladies. The queen stands at your right hand in gold of Ophir.

A declaration of Yahweh to my lord, "Sit at my right hand until I make your enemies your footstool."

⁵ And you, do you seek great things for yourself? Do not seek great things,* for look, I am about to bring disaster upon all flesh," _⌊declares_⌋* Yahweh, "but to you I will give your life as booty in all the places where you may go." '"

¹ At that time the disciples came up to Jesus, saying, "Who then is the greatest in the kingdom of heaven?"

²⁸ And Jesus said to them, "Truly I say to you that in the renewal of the world,* when the Son of Man sits on his glorious throne, you who have followed me—you also will sit on twelve thrones judging the twelve tribes of Israel.

³² And Jesus stopped,* called them, and said, "What do you want me to do for you?"

²² And when* the daughter of Herodias herself* came in and danced and pleased* Herod and _⌊his dinner guests_⌋,* the king said to the girl, "Ask me for whatever you want, and I will give it* to you."

³⁶ And he said to them, "What do you want that I do* for you?" ³⁷ So they said to him, "Grant to us that we may sit one at your right hand and one at your left in your glory."

⁵¹ And Jesus answered him and* said, "What do you want _⌊me to do_⌋* for you?" And the blind man said to him, "Rabboni,* that I may regain my sight."

¹⁹ Then the Lord Jesus, after he had spoken to them, was taken up into heaven and sat down at the right hand of God.

²⁰ Now when he* was asked by the Pharisees when the kingdom of God would come, he answered them and said, "The kingdom of God does not come with _⌊things that can be observed_⌋,* ²¹ nor will they say, 'Behold, here it is!' or 'There!' For behold, the kingdom of God is in your midst."

⁴¹ "What do you want me to do for you?" And he said, "Lord, that I may regain my sight.

¹¹ Now while* they were listening to these things, he went on and* told a parable, because he was near Jerusalem and they thought that the kingdom of God was going to appear immediately.

²⁴ And a dispute also occurred among them as to which of them was recognized as being greatest.

⁷ If you remain in me and my words remain in you, ask whatever you want and it will be done for you.

⁶ So when* they had come together, they began asking* him, saying, "Lord, is it at this time you are restoring the kingdom to Israel?"

³⁴ Who is the one who condemns? Christ* is the one who died, and more than that, who was raised, who is also at the right hand of God, who also intercedes for us.

¹⁰ being devoted to one another in brotherly love, esteeming one another more highly in honor,

¹ Therefore, if you have been raised together with Christ, seek the things above, where Christ is, seated at the right hand of God.

² and to Apphia our sister, and to Archippus our fellow soldier, and to the church in your house. ³ Grace to you and peace from God our Father and the Lord Jesus Christ.

¹⁸ Before destruction comes pride, and before a fall, a haughty spirit.*

¹⁷ Rouse yourself! Rouse yourself! Stand up, Jerusalem, who have drunk from the hand of Yahweh the cup of his wrath; you have drunk the goblet, the cup of staggering; you have drained it out.

²² Thus says your Lord, Yahweh, and your God pleads the cause of his people: "Look! I have taken from your hand the cup of staggering. You shall not _⌊continue_⌋* to drink the goblet, the cup of my wrath, any longer.

¹⁵ For thus said Yahweh, the God of Israel, to me, "Take this cup of the wine of wrath from my hand, and you must give it to all the nations to whom I am sending you to drink. ¹⁶ And they will drink, and they will stagger, and they will act like madmen because of the _⌊presence_⌋* of the sword that I am sending among them." ¹⁷ So I took the cup from the hand of Yahweh and I gave it* to all the nations to whom Yahweh sent me to drink: ¹⁸ Jerusalem and the towns of Judah, and its kings, and its officials, to make them a site of ruins, a horror, an object of hissing, and a curse, as it is this day; ¹⁹ Pharaoh, the king of Egypt, and his servants, and his officials, and all his people; ²⁰ and all the other* people; and all the kings of the land of Uz; and all the kings of the land of the Philistines—*Ashkelon, and Gaza, and Ekron, and the remnant of Ashdod; ²¹ Edom, and Moab, and the _⌊Ammonites_⌋;* ²² and all the kings of Tyre, and all the kings of Sidon, and the kings of the coastland that is across the sea; ²³ and Dedan, and Tema, and Buz, and all those who are trimmed to the side; ²⁴ and all the kings of Arabia, and all the kings of the other* people who dwell in the desert;* ²⁵ and all the kings of Zimri, and all the kings of Elam, and all the kings of Media; ²⁶ and all the kings of the north, near and far, each one to his brother, and all the kingdoms of the world that are on the face of the earth; and the king of Sheshach, he will drink after them. ²⁷ "And you shall say to them, 'Thus says Yahweh of hosts, the God of Israel, "Drink and become drunk, and vomit, and fall, and you must not rise because of the _⌊presence_⌋* of the sword that I am sending among you." ' ²⁸ And it will happen, if they refuse to take the cup from your hand to drink, then you shall say to them, 'Thus says Yahweh of hosts, "You must certainly drink! ²⁹ For look, on the city that is called _⌊by_⌋* my name I am beginning to inflict harm, and you indeed, will you go unpunished? You will not go unpunished, for I am summoning a sword against all the inhabitants of the earth," _⌊declares_⌋* Yahweh of hosts.' ³⁰ And you yourself shall prophesy against them all these words, and you shall say to them:
'Yahweh will roar from on high, and from _⌊his holy dwelling place_⌋* he will give his voice. He will roar mightily against his settlement, a jubilant shout like those who tread grapes, he will answer against all the inhabitants of the earth. ³¹ The rage of battle will resound to the end of the earth, for there is a lawsuit of Yahweh against the nations. He is entering into judgment with all wicked flesh, he will give them to the sword,' _⌊declares_⌋* Yahweh." ³² Thus says Yahweh of hosts,
"Look, disaster is going out from nation to nation, and a great tempest is stirred up from the farthest parts of the earth. ³³ And the slain ones of Yahweh will be on that day from one end of the earth to the other end of the earth, and they will not be mourned, and they will not be gathered, and they will not be buried. They will become like dung on the _⌊surface_⌋* of the ground. ³⁴ Wail, you shepherds, and cry out. And roll about in mourning in the dust, O leaders* of the flock. For your days of slaughter and your dispersions have arrived, and you will fall like a vessel of desire. ³⁵ And flight will perish from the shepherds, and escape from the leaders* of the flock. ³⁶ A sound, the cry of distress of the shepherds and the wailing of the leaders* of the flock, for Yahweh is despoiling their pasture. ³⁷ And the _⌊peaceful settlements_⌋* are devastated because of _⌊the burning anger of Yahweh_⌋.* ³⁸ He has left his den like a lion, for their land has become a horror, because of the anger of the oppressors, and because of _⌊his burning anger_⌋."*

¹² For thus says Yahweh, "Look, those _⌊who are not condemned_⌋* to drink the cup must certainly drink it.* And are you the one who will go entirely unpunished? You will not go unpunished, for you must certainly drink it.*

³⁵ Peter said to him, "Even if it is necessary for me to die with you, I will never deny you!" And all the disciples said the same thing.

³⁹ And going forward a little he fell down on his face, praying and saying, "My Father, if it is possible, let this cup pass from me. Nevertheless, not as I will, but as you will."*

⁴² Again for the second time he went away and* prayed, saying, "My Father, if this cannot pass unless I drink it, your will must be done."

⁵⁶ But all this has happened in order that the scriptures of the prophets would be fulfilled." Then the disciples all abandoned him and* fled.

³⁸ But Jesus said to them, "You do not know what you are asking! Are you able to drink the cup that I drink, or to be baptized with the baptism that I am baptized with?" ³⁹ And they said to him, "We are able." So Jesus said to them, "You will drink the cup that I drink, and you will be baptized with the baptism that I am baptized with,

³⁶ And he said, "Abba,* Father, all things are possible for you! Take away this cup from me! Yet not what I will, but what you will."*

⁵⁰ But I have a baptism to be baptized with, and how I am distressed until it is accomplished!

⁴² saying, "Father, if you are willing, take away this cup from me. Nevertheless, not my will but yours be done."
