⁷ And on the tenth of this seventh month you shall have a holy gathering; you shall do no work of service, you shall humble your souls.

²⁹ And it shall be for a never ending statute, in the seventh month, in the tenth of the month, you shall humble yourself and do no work, the native, and the alien who is staying in your midst. ³⁰ For on this day he shall atone for you, to cleanse you from all your sins you shall be clean before Jehovah. ³¹ It is a sabbath of rest to you, and you shall humble yourself. It is a never ending statute.

²⁶ And Jehovah spoke to Moses saying, ²⁷ Also, on the tenth of this seventh month shall be a day of atonement; there shall be a holy gathering, and you shall humble your souls and shall bring a fire offering to Jehovah. ²⁸ And you shall do no work in this same day, for it is a day of atonement, to atone for you before Jehovah your God. ²⁹ For any person who is not humbled in this same day shall be cut off from his people. ³⁰ And any person who does any work in this same day, I shall even destroy that person from the midst of his people. ³¹ You shall do no work; it is a never ending statute throughout your generations, in all your dwellings. ³² It is a sabbath of rest to you, and you shall humble your souls in the ninth of the month at evening; from evening until evening you shall keep your sabbath.

²¹ Then I called a fast there at the river Ahava, so that we might humble ourselves before our God, in order to seek from Him a right way for us, and for our little ones, and for all our goods.

¹³ But in their sickness, my clothing was sackcloth; I humbled my soul with fastings; and my prayer returned to my bosom.

⁵ Those who sow in tears shall reap with joyful shouting. ⁶ Surely he who walks and weeps, bearing a trail of seed, shall come again with joyful shouting, bearing his sheaves.

¹² And in that day the Lord Jehovah of Hosts called to weeping and mourning; and to baldness, and to girding with sackcloth.

³ They say, Why have we fasted, and You did not see? We have afflicted our soul, and You did not acknowledge. Behold, on the day of your fast you find pleasure; and you drive all your laborers hard. ⁴ Look! You fast for strife, and for debate, and to strike with the fist of wickedness. Do not fast as today, to sound your voice in the high place. ⁵ Is this like the fast I will choose, a day for a man to afflict his soul? To bow his head down like a bulrush, and he spreads sackcloth and ashes? Will you call to this as a fast and a day of delight to Jehovah?

³ to speak to the priests who belong to the house of Jehovah of hosts, and to the prophets, saying, Should I weep in the fifth month, consecrating myself as I have done these many years?

¹⁰ And I will pour on the house of David, and on the inhabitants of Jerusalem, the Spirit of grace and of prayers. And they shall look on Me whom they have pierced; and they shall mourn for Him, as one mourns for an only son, and they shall be bitter over Him, like the bitterness over the first-born.

⁴ Blessed are they who mourn! For they shall be comforted.

³ No, I say to you; but if you do not repent, you will all perish in the same way.

⁹ And much time having passed, and the voyage already being dangerous, because the Fast already had gone by, Paul warned them,

⁶ knowing this, that our old man was crucified with Him, that the body of sin might be nullified, so that we no longer serve sin.

²⁷ but I buffet my body and lead it captive, lest proclaiming to others I myself might be rejected.

⁹ Now I rejoice, not that you were grieved, but that you were grieved to repentance. For you were grieved according to God, that you might suffer loss in nothing by us. ¹⁰ For the grief according to God works repentance to salvation, not to be regretted. But the grief of the world works out death. ¹¹ For behold this same thing, you being grieved according to God, how much it worked out earnestness in you, but also defense, but also indignation, but also fear, but also desire, but also zeal, but also vengeance! In everything you commended yourselves to be clear in the matter.

⁸ Draw near to God, and He will draw near to you. Cleanse your hands, sinners! And purify your hearts, double minded ones! ⁹ Be distressed, and mourn, and weep. Let your laughter be turned to mourning, and your joy into shame. ¹⁰ Be humbled before the Lord, and He will exalt you.
