¹¹ And the Pharisees came out and began to question him, and they asked him for a sign from heaven, so as to test him.

³⁸ Then some of the men of the scribes and Pharisees answered and said to him, Teacher, we would like to see a sign from you.

¹ AND the Pharisees and Sadducees came up to him to tempt him; and they asked him to show them a sign from heaven. ² But he answered and said to them, When it is evening, you say, It is clear, for the sky is red. ³ And in the morning you say, It is a winter day, for the sky is red and cloudy. O hypocrites, you know how to judge the face of the sky, but the signs of the present time you are not able to distinguish. ⁴ A wicked and adulterous generation wants a sign; and no sign shall be given to it, except the sign of the prophet Jonah. And he left them and went away. ⁵ When his disciples came to the crossing place, they had forgotten to take bread with them. ⁶ He said to them, Look out and beware of the leaven of the Pharisees and of the Sadducees. ⁷ And they were reasoning among themselves and saying, It is because we have not brought bread. ⁸ But Jesus knew it and said to them, What are you thinking among yourselves, O you of little faith; is it because you have not brought bread? ⁹ Do you not yet understand? Do you not remember the five loaves of bread of the five thousand, and how many baskets you took up? ¹⁰ Neither the seven loaves of bread of the four thousand, and how many baskets you took up? ¹¹ How is it that you did not understand that I was not talking to you about the bread, but to beware of the leaven of the Pharisees and of the Sadducees? ¹² Then they understood, that he did not say that they should beware of the leaven of the bread, but of the teaching of the Pharisees and the Sadducees.

³ And the Pharisees came up to him and were tempting him and saying, Is it lawful for a man to divorce his wife for any cause?

²³ When Jesus came to the temple, the high priests and the elders of the people came up to him, while he was teaching, and said to him, By what authority do you do these things? and who gave you this authority?

¹⁵ Then the Pharisees went away and took counsel how to trap him by a word.

¹⁸ But Jesus knew their evil, and said, Why do you tempt me, O hypocrites?

²³ That same day the Sadducees came and said to him, There is no resurrection of the dead; and they asked him,

³⁴ But when the Pharisees heard that he had silenced the Sadducees, they gathered together. ³⁵ And one of them who knew the law, asked him, testing him,

¹⁶ And when the scribes and the Pharisees saw him eating with the publicans and sinners, they said to his disciples, Why does he eat and drink with publicans and sinners?

¹ THEN there gathered unto him Pharisees and scribes, who had come from Jerusalem. ² And they saw some of his disciples eating bread with their hands unwashed; and they reproached them.

¹⁵ Shall we give or shall we not give? But he knew their scheme, and said to them, Why do you tempt me? Bring me a penny, that I may see it.

²⁵ And behold, a scribe stood up to test him, and he said, Teacher, what shall I do to inherit eternal life?

¹⁶ And others, tempting him, asked him for a sign from heaven.

⁵³ When he had said these things to them, the scribes and the Pharisees were displeased, and they were enraged and criticized his words. ⁵⁴ And they plotted against him in many ways, seeking to catch something from his mouth, so that they might be able to accuse him.

⁵⁴ And he said to the people, When you see a cloud rise from the west, you immediately say, It will rain; and it is so. ⁵⁵ And when the wind blows from the south, you say, It will be hot; and it is so. ⁵⁶ O you hypocrites, you know how to discern the face of the earth and of the sky; how then is it that you do not discern this time? ⁵⁷ Why do you not of yourselves judge what is right?

⁴⁸ Jesus said to him, Unless you see miracles and wonders, you will not believe.

³⁰ They said to him, What miracle do you perform that we may see and believe in you? What have you performed?

⁴⁸ Why, have any of the leaders or of the Pharisees believed in him,

⁹ Then Simon Peter said to her, Because you have been partners to tempt the Spirit of the LORD, behold the feet of the men who have buried your husband are at the door, and they shall carry you out also.

²² For the Jews demand signs, and the Syrians seek after wisdom: ²³ But we preach Christ crucified, which is a stumbling block to the Jews and foolishness to the Syrians. *

⁹ Neither should we tempt Christ, as some of them tempted; for they were destroyed by snakes.
