¹² And he sighed in his spirit and said, Why does this generation want a sign? truly I say to you, No sign will be given to this generation.

³⁹ But he answered and said to them, An evil and adulterous generation wants a sign; and no sign will be given to it, except the sign of the prophet Jonah. ⁴⁰ For as Jonah was in the whaleÆs belly three days and three nights, so the Son of man will be in the heart of the earth, three days and three nights.

⁵ And he looked at them with anger, sad because of the hardness of their hearts; and he said to the man, Stretch out your hand, and he stretched it out; and his hand was restored.

⁶ And he wondered at their lack of faith. And he travelled in the villages teaching.

³⁴ And he looked up to heaven, and sighed, and he said to him, Ethpatakh, which means, Be opened.

¹⁹ Jesus answered and said to him, O faithless generation, how long shall I be with you? and how long shall I preach to you? bring him to me.

²⁹ And when the people were gathering, he began to say, This evil generation wants a sign; and no sign will be given to it, except the sign of the prophet Jonah. ³⁰ For as Jonah was a sign to the Ninevites, so also will the Son of man be to this generation.

²⁹ Abraham said to him, They have Moses and the prophets; * let them hear them. ³⁰ But he said to him, No, my father Abraham; but if only a man from the dead go to them, they will repent. ³¹ Abraham said to him, If they will not hear Moses and the prophets, neither will they believe even if a man should rise from the dead.

⁶⁷ And they said to him, If you are the Christ, tell us. He said to them, If I tell you, you will not believe me. ⁶⁸ And if I ask you, you will not answer me nor release me. ⁶⁹ From henceforth the Son of man will sit at the right hand of the power of God. ⁷⁰ And they all said, Are you then the Son of God? Jesus said to them, You say that I am.

³³ When Jesus saw her weeping, and the Jews weeping, who had come with her, he was moved in his spirit, and was greatly disturbed. ³⁴ And he said, Where have you laid him? They said to him, Our Lord, come and see. ³⁵ And Jesus was in tears. ³⁶ The Jews then said, Look, how much he loved him! ³⁷ Some of them said, Could not this man, who opened the eyes of that blind man, have also kept this man from dying? ³⁸ As Jesus was disturbed in himself because of them, he came to the tomb. That tomb was a cave, and a stone was placed at the entrance.

³⁷ Even though he had performed all of these miracles before them, yet they did not believe in him; ³⁸ So that the word of the prophet Isaiah might be fulfilled, who said, My Lord, who will believe our report, and to whom has the arm of the Lord been revealed? ³⁹ For this reason, they could not believe, because Isaiah said again, ⁴⁰ Their eyes have become blind and their heart darkened, so that they cannot see with their eyes and understand with their heart; let them return and I will heal them. ⁴¹ Isaiah said these things, when he saw his glory and spoke concerning him. ⁴² Many of the leading men also believed in him; but because of the Pharisees they did not confess it, so that they might not be cast out of the synagogue. ⁴³ For they loved the honor of men more than the glory of God.
