¹ AND the Pharisees and Sadducees came up to him to tempt him; and they asked him to show them a sign from heaven.

⁷ But when he saw a great many of the Pharisees and Sadducees who were coming to be baptized, he said to them, O offspring of scorpions, who has warned you to escape from the anger which is to come? ⁸ Bring forth therefore fruits which are worthy of repentance;

²⁰ For I say to you, that unless your righteousness exceeds that of the scribes and Pharisees, you shall not enter the kingdom of heaven.

¹¹ And when the Pharisees saw it, they said to his disciples, Why does your master eat with publicans and sinners?

¹⁴ And the Pharisees went out, and they took counsel concerning him, so as to do away with him.

³⁸ Then some of the men of the scribes and Pharisees answered and said to him, Teacher, we would like to see a sign from you. ³⁹ But he answered and said to them, An evil and adulterous generation wants a sign; and no sign will be given to it, except the sign of the prophet Jonah.

¹ THEN Pharisees and scribes from Jerusalem came up to Jesus, saying,

⁶ He said to them, Look out and beware of the leaven of the Pharisees and of the Sadducees.

¹¹ How is it that you did not understand that I was not talking to you about the bread, but to beware of the leaven of the Pharisees and of the Sadducees? ¹² Then they understood, that he did not say that they should beware of the leaven of the bread, but of the teaching of the Pharisees and the Sadducees.

³ And the Pharisees came up to him and were tempting him and saying, Is it lawful for a man to divorce his wife for any cause?

¹⁵ Then the Pharisees went away and took counsel how to trap him by a word.

¹⁸ But Jesus knew their evil, and said, Why do you tempt me, O hypocrites?

²³ That same day the Sadducees came and said to him, There is no resurrection of the dead; and they asked him,

³⁴ But when the Pharisees heard that he had silenced the Sadducees, they gathered together. ³⁵ And one of them who knew the law, asked him, testing him,

² And he said to them, The scribes and the Pharisees sit on the chair of Moses.

⁶² The next day, which is after Friday, the high priests and the Pharisees together came to Pilate,

¹¹ And the Pharisees came out and began to question him, and they asked him for a sign from heaven, so as to test him. ¹² And he sighed in his spirit and said, Why does this generation want a sign? truly I say to you, No sign will be given to this generation. ¹³ And he left them, and went up into the boat, and departed from that port. ¹⁴ And they had forgotten to take bread; except one loaf they had none with them in the boat. ¹⁵ And he commanded them and said to them, Look out, and beware of the leaven of the Pharisees and of the leaven of Herod. ¹⁶ They were reasoning among themselves and saying, It is because we have no bread. ¹⁷ But Jesus knew it and said to them, What are you thinking, because you have no bread? Do you not even yet know, and do you not understand? Is your heart still hard? ¹⁸ You have eyes, and yet do you not see? You have ears, and yet do you not hear? And do you not remember? ¹⁹ When I broke the five loaves of bread for the five thousand, how many full baskets of fragments did you take up? They said to him, Twelve. ²⁰ He said to them, And when the seven for the four thousand, how many baskets full of fragments did you take up? They said, Seven. ²¹ He said to them, How is it then that even yet you cannot understand?

² And the Pharisees came up to him, tempting him and asking, Is it lawful for a man to desert his wife?

¹⁵ Shall we give or shall we not give? But he knew their scheme, and said to them, Why do you tempt me? Bring me a penny, that I may see it.

¹⁸ Then the Sadducees came to him, those who say there is no resurrection; and they asked him, saying,

²⁵ And behold, a scribe stood up to test him, and he said, Teacher, what shall I do to inherit eternal life?

¹⁶ And others, tempting him, asked him for a sign from heaven.

²⁹ And when the people were gathering, he began to say, This evil generation wants a sign; and no sign will be given to it, except the sign of the prophet Jonah. ³⁰ For as Jonah was a sign to the Ninevites, so also will the Son of man be to this generation.

⁵³ When he had said these things to them, the scribes and the Pharisees were displeased, and they were enraged and criticized his words. ⁵⁴ And they plotted against him in many ways, seeking to catch something from his mouth, so that they might be able to accuse him.

⁵⁴ And he said to the people, When you see a cloud rise from the west, you immediately say, It will rain; and it is so. ⁵⁵ And when the wind blows from the south, you say, It will be hot; and it is so. ⁵⁶ O you hypocrites, you know how to discern the face of the earth and of the sky; how then is it that you do not discern this time?

²³ But he understood their craftiness and said, Why do you tempt me?

²⁷ Then came to him some of the men of the Sadducees, those who say there is no resurrection; and they asked him,

³⁰ They said to him, What miracle do you perform that we may see and believe in you? What have you performed? ³¹ Our forefathers ate manna in the wilderness; as it is written, He gave them bread from heaven to eat.

⁶ They said this to tempt him, that they might have a cause to accuse him. While Jesus was bent down, he was writing on the ground.

¹ AND while they were speaking these words to the people, the priests and the SadÆdu-cees and the leaders of the temple rose up against them,

¹⁷ Then the high priest was filled with jealousy and all of those who were with him, for they were adherents to the teachings of the SadÆdu-cees,

⁶ Now when Paul perceived that part of the people were SadÆdu-cees, and the others were PharÆi-sees, he cried out in the assembly, Men, my brethren, I am a PharÆi-see, the son of a PharÆi-see: and it is because of the hope of the resurrection of the dead that I am here to be judged. ⁷ And when he had said this, there arose a dissension between the PharÆi-sees and the SadÆdu-cees: and the people were divided. ⁸ For the SadÆdu-cees say there is no resurrection, neither angels nor soul: but the PharÆi-sees believe in them.
