²³ Jesus then said to his disciples, Truly I say to you, It is difficult for a rich man to enter into the kingdom of heaven.

²⁰ For I say to you, that unless your righteousness exceeds that of the scribes and Pharisees, you shall not enter the kingdom of heaven.

²² That which was sown among thistles, this is he who hears the word, but worldly thoughts and the deception caused by riches choke the word, and it becomes fruitless.

³ And he said, Truly I say to you, Unless you change and become like little boys, you shall not enter into the kingdom of heaven.

³¹ Which of these two did the will of his father? They said to him, The first one. Jesus said to them, Truly I say to you, that even the publicans and the harlots will precede you into the kingdom of God.

²³ Then Jesus looked at his disciples and said to them, How hard it is for those who have wealth, to enter into the kingdom of God!

¹⁵ And he said to his disciples, Beware of all covetousness, because life does not depend on abundance of wealth. ¹⁶ Then he told them a parable. The land of a rich man brought him a great many crops. ¹⁷ And he reasoned within himself and said, What shall I do, for I have no place to gather my crops? ¹⁸ So he said, I will do this; I will tear down my barns, and build them and enlarge them; and gather there all my wheat and my good things. ¹⁹ And I will say to myself, Myself, you have many good things stored up for many years; rest, eat, drink, and be happy. ²⁰ But God said to him, O you shortsighted, this very night your life will be demanded of you; and these things which you have prepared, to whom will they he left? ²¹ Such is he who lays up treasures for himself, and is not rich in the things in God.

¹³ No servant can serve two masters; for either he will hate the one and like the other; or he will honor one and despise the other. You cannot serve God and mammon (wealth). ¹⁴ When the Pharisees heard all these things, because they loved money, they ridiculed him.

¹⁹ There was a rich man, who used to wear purple and fine linen, and every day he made merry very lavishly. ²⁰ And there was a poor man named Lazarus, who was laid down at that rich manÆs door, afflicted with boils; ²¹ He longed to fill his stomach with the crumbs that fell from the rich manÆs tray; the dogs also came and licked his boils. ²² Now it happened that the poor man died, and the angels carried him into AbrahamÆs bosom; and the rich man also died and was buried. ²³ And while he was tormented in Sheol, he lifted up his eyes from a distance, and saw Abraham, with Lazarus in his bosom. ²⁴ And he called in a loud voice and said, O my father Abraham, have mercy on me, and send Lazarus to dip his finger in water and wet my tongue; for I am tormented in this flame. ²⁵ Abraham said to him, My son, remember you received your pleasures when you were living, and Lazarus his hardships; and behold now he is comfortable here, and you are suffering. ²⁶ Besides all these things, a great gulf is fixed between us and you; so that those who wish to cross over from here to you cannot, neither from there to cross over to us. ²⁷ He said to him, If that is so, I beseech you, O my father, to send him to my fatherÆs house; ²⁸ For I have five brothers; let him go and testify to them, so that they may not also come to this place of torment.

²⁴ And when Jesus saw that he felt sad, he said, How difficult it is for those who have wealth to enter into the kingdom of God!

³ Jesus answered and said to him, Truly, truly, I say to you, If a man is not born again,* he cannot see the kingdom of God.

⁵ Jesus answered and said to him, Truly, truly, I say to you, If a man is not born of water and the Spirit, he cannot enter into the kingdom of God.

²² Strengthening the souls of the converts, and exhorting them to continue in the faith, and telling them that only through much tribulation can we enter into the kingdom of God.

²⁶ For consider also your own calling, my brethren, not many among you are wise in terms of worldly things, and not many among you are mighty, and not many among you belong to the nobility.

⁹ For those who desire to be rich, fall into temptations, and snares, and into many foolish and hurtful lusts, which drown men in degeneration and destruction. ¹⁰ For the love of money is the root of all evil: and there are some men who have coveted it and have thereby erred from the faith, they have brought to themselves many sorrows.

⁹ Let the brother of low estate rejoice because he is exalted. ¹⁰ Let the rich man rejoice in his humbleness: because as the flower of the grass, so shall he pass away. ¹¹ For as the sun rises with its burning heat and causes the grass to wither, and the flower to fall and its beauty to perish: so also shall the rich man fade away in his ways.

⁶ But you have despised the poor. Do not rich men exalt themselves over you and drag you before the judgment seat?

¹ O YOU rich men, weep and howl for the miseries which shall come upon you! ² Your riches are destroyed and rotted, and your garments are moth-eaten. ³ Your gold and silver are tarnished, and the rust of them will be a testimony against you, and shall eat your flesh. The treasures which you have heaped together will be as fire to you for the last days. ⁴ Behold, the wage of the labourers, who have reaped down your fields, that which you have fraudulently kept back, cries: and the cry of the reapers has already entered into the ears of the LORD of sabaoth.
