¹ And when Saul's son heard that Abner was dead in Hebron, his hands became feeble and all the Israelites were troubled.
² And Saul's son had two men who were captains of bands. The name of the one was Baanah and the name of the other Rechab, the sons of Rimmon the Beerothite, of the sons of Benjamin, for Beeroth also is reckoned to Benjamin. ³ And the Beerothites fled to Gittaim and have been travelers there until this day.
⁴ Now Jonathan, Saul's son, had a son who was lame in his feet. He was five years old when the news came of Saul and Jonathan out of Jezreel and his nurse took him up and fled. And it happened, as she made haste to flee, that he fell and became lame. And his name was Mephibosheth.
⁵ And the sons of Rimmon the Beerothite, Rechab and Baanah, went and came about the heat of the day to the house of Ish-bosheth, as he took his rest at noon. ⁶ And they came there into the midst of the house as though they would have fetched wheat and they killed* him in the body. And Rechab and Baanah his brother escaped.
⁷ Now when they came into the house, as he lay on his bed in his bedroom, they killed* him and killed him and beheaded him and took his head and went by the way of the Arabah all night.
⁸ And they brought the head of Ish-bosheth to David to Hebron and said to the king, Behold, the head of Ish-bosheth, the son of Saul, your enemy, who sought your life. And Jehovah has avenged my lord the king this day of Saul and of his seed.
⁹ And David answered Rechab and Baanah his brother, the sons of Rimmon the Beerothite and said to them, As Jehovah lives, who has redeemed my soul out of all adversity, ¹⁰ when he who told me, saying, Behold, Saul is dead, thinking to have brought good news, I took hold of him and killed him in Ziklag, which was the reward I gave him for his news.
¹¹ How much more, when evil men have slain a righteous man in his own house upon his bed, shall I not now require his blood of your* hand and take you* away from the earth?
¹² And David commanded his young men and they killed them and cut off their hands and their feet and hanged them up beside the pool in Hebron. But they took the head of Ish-bosheth and buried it in the grave of Abner in Hebron.

²⁷ And when Abner was returned to Hebron, Joab took him aside into the midst of the gate to speak with him quietly and killed* him there in the body, so that he died, for the blood of Asahel his brother.

² And I will come upon him while he is weary and weak-handed and will make him afraid. And all the people who are with him will flee. And I will only kill* the king,

⁴ Then the people of the land weakened the hands of the people of Judah and troubled them in building,

⁹ For they all would have made us afraid, saying, Their hands will be weakened from the work that it not be done. But now, O God, strengthen you my hands.

⁷ Therefore all hands will be feeble and every heart of man will melt.

³ Strengthen you* the weak hands and confirm the feeble knees.

²⁴ We have heard the report of it. Our hands grow feeble. Anguish has taken hold of us and pangs as of a woman in travail.

¹⁷ And the sons of Israel journeyed and came to their cities on the third day. Now their cities were Gibeon and Chephirah and Beeroth and Kiriath-jearim.

²⁵ Gibeon and Ramah and Beeroth,

²² And behold, the servants of David and Joab came from a foray and brought in a great spoil with them, but Abner was not with David in Hebron, for he had sent him away and he had gone in peace.

² And the Syrians had gone out in bands and had brought away captive out of the land of Israel a little maiden and she waited on Naaman's wife.

²³ And he prepared great provision for them. And when they had eaten and drunk, he sent them away and they went to their master. And the bands of Syria came no more into the land of Israel.

⁷ And when the men of Israel who were on the other side of the valley and those who were beyond the Jordan, saw that the men of Israel fled and that Saul and his sons were dead, they forsook the cities and fled. And the Philistines came and dwelt in them.

³³ Hazor, Ramah, Gittaim,

¹ Now the Philistines gathered together all their armies to Aphek and the Israelites encamped by the fountain which is in Jezreel.

¹¹ So David rose up early, he and his men, to depart in the morning, to return into the land of the Philistines. And the Philistines went up to Jezreel.

¹ Now the Philistines fought against Israel. And the men of Israel fled from before the Philistines and fell down slain in Mount Gilboa.
² And the Philistines followed hard upon Saul and upon his sons and the Philistines killed Jonathan and Abinadab and Malchi shua, the sons of Saul. ³ And the battle went severely against Saul and the archers overtook him and he was greatly distressed because of the archers.
⁴ Then Saul said to his armor bearer, Draw your sword and thrust me through with it, lest these uncircumcised come and thrust me through and abuse me. But his armor bearer would not, for he was very afraid. Therefore Saul took his sword and fell upon it.
⁵ And when his armor bearer saw that Saul was dead, he likewise fell upon his sword and died with him. ⁶ So Saul died and his three sons and his armor bearer and all his men, that same day together.
⁷ And when the men of Israel who were on the other side of the valley and those who were beyond the Jordan, saw that the men of Israel fled and that Saul and his sons were dead, they forsook the cities and fled. And the Philistines came and dwelt in them. ⁸ And it happened on the morrow, when the Philistines came to strip the slain, that they found Saul and his three sons fallen in Mount Gilboa.
⁹ And they cut off his head and stripped off his armor and sent into the land of the Philistines all around to carry the news to the house of their idols and to the people. ¹⁰ And they put his armor in the house of the Ashtaroth and they fastened his body to the wall of Beth-shan.

³ And the king said, Is there not yet any of the house of Saul that I may show the kindness of God to him? And Ziba said to the king, Jonathan has yet a son who is lame in his feet.

⁶ And Mephibosheth, the son of Jonathan, the son of Saul, came to David and fell on his face and bowed-down. And David said, Mephibosheth. And he answered, Behold, your servant!

³⁴ And the son of Jonathan was Merib-baal and Merib-baal fathered Micah.

⁸ Now Abner the son of Ner, captain of Saul's army, had taken Ish-bosheth the son of Saul and brought him over to Mahanaim.

² And it happened at evening, that David arose from his bed and walked upon the roof of the king's house. And from the roof he saw a woman bathing and the woman was very beautiful to look upon.

⁹ And his servant Zimri, captain of half his chariots, conspired against him. Now he was in Tirzah, drinking himself drunk in the house of Arza, who was over the household in Tirzah.

²⁵ And when they were departed from him (for they left him very sick), his own servants conspired against him for the blood of the sons of Jehoiada the priest and killed him on his bed and he died. And they buried him in the city of David, but they did not bury him in the sepulchers of the kings.

²⁷ Now from the time that Amaziah turned away from following Jehovah they made a conspiracy against him in Jerusalem and he fled to Lachish. But they sent after him to Lachish and killed him there.

²⁴ And his servants conspired against him and put him to death in his own house.

³³ Yet a little sleep, a little slumber, a little folding of the hands to sleep, ³⁴ so your poverty will come as a robber and your want as an armed man.

³ For whenever they are saying, Peace and security; then sudden utter-destruction stands by them, just-like the travail a woman has in her womb, and they may never flee away from it. ⁴ But brethren, you are not in darkness, in order that the day might overtake you like a thief. ⁵ You are all sons of light and sons of the day. We are not of the night, nor of darkness; ⁶ Therefore consequently, we should not sleep, like the rest also do, but let us watch and be sober. ⁷ For those who are sleeping, sleep in the night, and those who are drunken, are drunken in the night.

²³ However he refused to turn aside. Therefore Abner with the hinder end of the spear killed* him in the body, so that the spear came out behind him. And he fell down there and died in the same place. And it happened, that as many as came to the place where Asahel fell down and died stood still.

¹⁰ But Amasa took no heed to the sword that was in Joab's hand. So he killed* him with it in the body and shed out his guts to the ground and struck him not again and he died. And Joab and Abishai his brother pursued after Sheba the son of Bichri.

⁵⁴ And David took the head of the Philistine and brought it to Jerusalem, but he put his armor in his tent.

⁹ And they cut off his head and stripped off his armor and sent into the land of the Philistines all around to carry the news to the house of their idols and to the people.

²⁹ And Abner and his men went all that night through the Arabah and came to Mahanaim.

⁶ Then he wrote a letter the second time to them, saying, If you* are on my side and if you* will listen to my voice, take the heads of the men your* master's sons and come to me to Jezreel by tomorrow this time. Now the king's sons, being seventy persons, were with the great men of the city who reared them.
⁷ And it happened, when the letter came to them, that they took the king's sons and killed them, even seventy persons and put their heads in baskets and sent them to him to Jezreel.

¹¹ And his head was carried upon a platter, and given to the girl, and she brought it to her mother.

²⁸ Now he went and beheaded him in the prison, and brought his head upon a platter and gave it to the girl, and the girl gave it to her mother. ²⁹ And when his disciples heard of it, they came and lifted up his corpse and laid it in a tomb.

¹¹ And Saul cast the spear, for he said, I will kill* David even to the wall. And David turned away from his presence twice.

² And Jonathan told David, saying, Saul my father seeks to kill you. Now therefore, I beseech you, take heed to yourself in the morning and abide in a secret place and hide yourself. ³ And I will go out and stand beside my father in the field where you are and I will speak with my father of you and if I see anything, I will tell you.
⁴ And Jonathan spoke good of David to Saul his father and said to him, Do not let the king sin against his servant, against David, because he has not sinned against you and because his works have been very good toward you. ⁵ For he put his life in his hand and killed* the Philistine and Jehovah worked a great victory for all Israel. You saw it and rejoiced. Why then will you sin against innocent blood, to kill David without a cause?
⁶ And Saul listened to the voice of Jonathan. And Saul swore, As Jehovah lives, he will not be put to death. ⁷ And Jonathan called David and Jonathan showed him all those things. And Jonathan brought David to Saul and he was in his presence as formerly.
⁸ And there was war again. And David went out and fought with the Philistines and killed them with a great slaughter and they fled before him. ⁹ And an evil spirit from Jehovah was upon Saul as he sat in his house with his spear in his hand and David was playing with his hand. ¹⁰ And Saul sought to kill* David even to the wall with the spear, but he slipped away out of Saul's presence and he killed* the spear into the wall. And David fled and escaped that night.
¹¹ And Saul sent messengers to David's house, to watch him and to kill him in the morning. And Michal, David's wife, told him, saying, If you do not save your life tonight, tomorrow you will be slain.

¹⁵ And Saul sent the messengers to see David, saying, Bring him up to me in the bed, that I may kill him.

¹ And David fled from Naioth in Ramah and came and said before Jonathan, What have I done? What is my iniquity and what is my sin before your father, that he seeks my life?

¹⁵ And David saw that Saul came out to seek his life and David was in the wilderness of Ziph in the forest.

⁴ And the men of David said to him, Behold, the day of which Jehovah said to you, Behold, I will deliver your enemy into your hand and you will do to him as it will seem good to you. Then David arose and cut off the skirt of Saul's robe secretly.

²⁹ And though men have risen up to pursue you and to seek your soul, yet the soul of my lord will be bound in the bundle of life with Jehovah your God. And the souls of your enemies, them he will sling out as from the hollow of a sling.

¹⁹ Then Ahimaaz the son of Zadok said, Let me now run and bear the king news, how that Jehovah has avenged him of his enemies.

³¹ And behold, the Cushite came. And the Cushite said, News for my lord the king, for Jehovah has avenged you this day of all those who rose up against you.

⁴⁸ Even the God who executes vengeance for me and who brings down peoples under me,

⁹ But those who seek my soul to destroy it, will go into the lower parts of the earth. ¹⁰ They will be given over to the power of the sword. They will be a portion for foxes.

²⁴ My tongue also will talk of your righteousness all the day long. Because they are put to shame, because they are confounded, who seek my hurt.

²⁰ saying, When you arise, take the young child and his mother, and travel into the land of Israel, for those seeking the young child’s life have died.

⁷ Now, should God not do the avenging of his chosen who are crying to him day and night? Also, should he not have patience upon them?
⁸ I say to you, that he will be doing the avenging on them quickly.
However, when the Son of Man comes, will he then be finding the faith upon the earth?

¹⁰ And they cried with a loud voice, saying, Until when, O holy and true Master, do you not judge and avenge our blood from those who dwell upon the earth?

²⁰ Be joyous over her: heaven and the holy-ones and the apostles and the prophets, because God has judged your condemnation from her
.

¹⁶ the messenger who has redeemed me from all evil, bless the lads and let my name be named on them and the name of my fathers Abraham and Isaac and let them grow into a multitude in the midst of the earth.

²⁹ And the king swore and said, As Jehovah lives, who has redeemed my soul out of all adversity,

⁵ I commend my spirit into your hand. You have redeemed me, O Jehovah, you, God of truth.
⁶ I hate those who regard lying vanities, but I trust in Jehovah.
⁷ I will be glad and rejoice in your loving kindness, for you have seen my affliction. You have known my soul in adversities,

⁶ This poor man cried and Jehovah heard him and saved him out of all his troubles. ⁷ The messenger of Jehovah encamps all around those who fear him and delivers them.

¹⁷ They cried and Jehovah heard and delivered them out of all their troubles.

²² Jehovah redeems the soul of his servants and none of those who take refuge in him will be condemned.

²³ My lips will shout for joy because I sing praises to you and my soul, which you have redeemed.

⁴ who redeems your life from destruction, who crowns you with loving kindness and tender mercies,

¹⁰ And he saved them from the hand of him who hated them and redeemed them from the hand of the enemy.

² Let the redeemed of Jehovah say so, whom he has redeemed from the hand of the adversary,

¹⁷ But the Lord stood beside me and empowered me; in order that the preaching might be fully assured through me and in order that all the Gentiles might hear and I was rescued out of the mouth of the lion. ¹⁸ The Lord will be rescuing me from every evil work and will save me for his heavenly kingdom: in whom is the glory, forevermore. Amen.

² it happened on the third day, that, behold, a man came out of the camp from Saul with his clothes torn and earth upon his head. And so it was, when he came to David, that he fell to the ground and bowed-down.
³ And David said to him, From where did you come? And he said to him, I escaped out of the camp of Israel. ⁴ And David said to him, How did the matter go? I beseech you, tell me. And he answered, The people are fled from the battle and many of the people also are fallen and dead and Saul and Jonathan his son are also dead. ⁵ And David said to the young man who told him, How do you know that Saul and Jonathan his son are dead?
⁶ And the young man who told him said, As I happened by chance upon Mount Gilboa, behold, Saul was leaning upon his spear, and behold, the chariots and the horsemen followed close after him. ⁷ And when he looked behind him, he saw me and called to me. And I answered, Here I am. ⁸ And he said to me, Who are you? And I answered him, I am an Amalekite. ⁹ And he said to me, I beseech you, stand beside me and kill me, for anguish has taken hold of me, because my life is yet whole in me.
¹⁰ So I stood beside him and killed him, because I was sure that he could not live after he was fallen. And I took the crown that was upon his head and the bracelet that was on his arm and have brought them here to my lord.
¹¹ Then David took hold of his clothes and tore them and likewise all the men who were with him. ¹² And they mourned and wept and fasted until evening, for Saul and for Jonathan his son and for the people of Jehovah and for the house of Israel, because they were fallen by the sword.
¹³ And David said to the young man who told him, From where are you? And he answered, I am the son of a traveler, an Amalekite. ¹⁴ And David said to him, Why were you not afraid to put forth your hand to destroy Jehovah's anointed? ¹⁵ And David called one of the young men and said, Go near and fall upon him. And he killed* him so that he died. ¹⁶ And David said to him, Your blood be upon your head, for your mouth has testified against you, saying, I have slain Jehovah's anointed.

¹¹ And now you are cursed from the ground, which has opened its mouth to receive your brother's blood from your hand.

¹³ And God said to Noah, The end of all flesh has come before me, because the earth is filled with violence through them and behold, I will destroy them with the earth.

²³ And every living thing was destroyed that was upon the face of the ground, from man, to cattle, to creeping things and birds of the heavens and they were destroyed from the earth. And only Noah was left and those who were with him in the ark.

⁵ And surely I will require your* blood, the blood of your* lives. I will require it at the hand of every beast. And I will require the life of man at the hand of man, even at the hand of every man's brother. ⁶ Whoever sheds man's blood, his blood will be shed by man. For in the image of God he made man.

¹⁵ For now I have put forth my hand and struck you and your people with pestilence,
and you have been cut off from the earth.

¹² He who slays a man, so that he dies, will surely be put to death.

³¹ Moreover you* will take no ransom for the life of a murderer who is guilty of death, but he will surely be put to death. ³² And you* will take no ransom for him who has fled to his city of refuge, that he may come again to dwell in the land, until the death of the priest.
³³ So you* will not pollute the land in which you* are, for blood, it pollutes the land. And no expiation can be made for the land for the blood that is shed in it, but by the blood of him who shed it. ³⁴ And you will not defile the land which you* inhabit, in the midst of which I dwell, for I, Jehovah, dwell in the midst of the sons of Israel.

³⁹ And I am this day weak, though anointed king and these men the sons of Zeruiah are too hard for me. Jehovah reward the evildoer according to his wickedness.

³² And Jehovah will return his blood upon his own head, because he fell upon two men more righteous and better than he and killed them with the sword and my father David did not know it, namely, Abner the son of Ner, captain of the army of Israel and Amasa the son of Jether, captain of the army of Judah.

¹² Because he who makes inquiry for blood remembers them. He does not forget the cry of the poor.

¹⁵ Let them be before Jehovah continually, that he may cut off the memory of them from the earth,

²² But the wicked will be cut off from the land and the treacherous will be rooted out of it.

²⁶ A troubled fountain and a corrupted spring, is a righteous man who gives way before the wicked.

¹¹ Thus you* will say to them: The gods that have not made the heavens and the earth, these will perish from the earth and from under the heavens.

⁴ Therefore the law is slacked and justice never goes forth. For the wicked man surrounds the righteous man, therefore justice goes forth perverted.

¹² Are not you from long-ago, O Jehovah my God, my Holy One? We will not die. O Jehovah, you have placed him for judgment and you, O Rock, have established him for correction.

¹² not like Cain who was from the evil one and slaughtered his brother. And he slaughtered him because of what? Because his works were evil but the works of his brother were righteous.

²² And if a man has committed a sin worthy of death and he is put to death and you hang him on a tree, ²³ his body will not remain all night upon the tree, but you will surely bury him the same day, for he who is hanged is accursed of God, that you not defile your land which Jehovah your God gives you for an inheritance.

¹⁵ And David called one of the young men and said, Go near and fall upon him. And he killed* him so that he died.

³² And they buried Abner in Hebron. And the king lifted up his voice and wept at the grave of Abner and all the people wept.

⁹ And he delivered them into the hands of the Gibeonites. And they hanged them in the mountain before Jehovah and they fell all seven together. And they were put to death in the days of harvest, in the first days, at the beginning of barley harvest.

²³ But you, O God, will bring them down into the pit of destruction. Bloodthirsty and deceitful men will not live out half their days, but I will trust in you.

² For in what judgment you judge, you will be judged and in what measure you measure, it will be measured to you.
