¹ But now, those who are younger than I mock me, whose fathers I disdained to set with the dogs of my flock.
² Yes, the strength of their hands, to what should it profit me? Men in whom ripe age has perished. ³ They are barren with want and famine. They gnaw the dry ground in the gloom of waste and desolation. ⁴ They pluck mallows by the bushes and the roots of the juniper are their food.
⁵ They are driven forth from the midst of men. They cry out after them as after a thief, ⁶ so that they dwell in frightful valleys, in holes of the earth and of the rocks. ⁷ Among the bushes they bray, under the nettles they are gathered together. ⁸ They are sons of fools, yes, sons of base men. They were scourged out of the land.
⁹ And now I have become their song, Yes, I am a parable to them. ¹⁰ They abhor me. They stand far away from me and do not refrain to spit in my face. ¹¹ For he has loosed his cord and afflicted me. And they have cast off the bridle before me.
¹² Upon my right hand rise the rabble. They thrust aside my feet and they cast up against me their ways of destruction. ¹³ They mar my path. They set forward my calamity, even men who have no helper. ¹⁴ As through a wide breach they come. In the midst of the ruin they roll themselves upon me. ¹⁵ Terrors are turned upon me. They chase my honor as the wind and my welfare is passed away as a cloud.
¹⁶ And now my soul is poured out within me. Days of affliction have taken hold upon me. ¹⁷ In the night season my bones are pierced in me and the pains that gnaw me take no rest. ¹⁸ By the great force my garment is disfigured. It binds me about as the collar of my coat. ¹⁹ He has cast me into the mud and I have become like dust and ashes.
²⁰ I cry to you and you do not answer me. I stand up and you gaze at me. ²¹ You have turned to be cruel to me. With the might of your hand you persecute me. ²² You lift me up to the wind. You cause me to ride upon it and you disintegrate me in the storm. ²³ For I know that you will bring me to death and to the house appointed for all living.
²⁴ However does not a man stretch out the hand in his fall? Or in his calamity therefore cry for help? ²⁵ Did I not weep for him who was in trouble? Was not my soul grieved for the needy?
²⁶ When I looked for good, then evil came. And when I waited for light, there came darkness. ²⁷ My heart is troubled and does not rest. Days of affliction have come upon me. ²⁸ I go mourning without the sun. I stand up in the assembly and cry for help.
²⁹ I am a brother to jackals and a companion to ostriches. ³⁰ My skin is black, and falls from me. And my bones are burned with heat. ³¹ Therefore my harp has turned to mourning and my pipe into the voice of those who weep.

²³ And he went up from there to Bethel. And as he was going up by the way, there came out young lads out of the city and mocked him and said to him, Go up, you baldheaded; go up, you baldheaded.

⁴ I am as a man who is a laughing-stock to his neighbor. I who called upon God and he answered. The just, the perfect man is a laughing-stock.

¹³ He has put my brothers far from me and my acquaintances are entirely estranged from me. ¹⁴ My kinsfolk have failed and my familiar friends have forgotten me. ¹⁵ Those who dwell in my house and my maids, reckon me for a stranger; I am an alien in their sight. ¹⁶ I call to my servant and he gives me no answer. I entreat him with my mouth. ¹⁷ My breath is strange to my wife and my supplication to the sons of my own mother.
¹⁸ Even young children despise me. If I arise, they speak against me. ¹⁹ All my familiar friends abhor me and those whom I loved are turned against me.

⁸ The young men saw me and hid themselves and the aged rose up and stood. ⁹ The rulers refrained from talking and laid their hand on their mouth. ¹⁰ The voice of the ranking men was hushed and their tongue stuck to the roof of their mouth.

¹⁵ But in my adversity they rejoiced and gathered themselves together. The slayers gathered themselves together against me and I did not know it. They tore me and ceased not. ¹⁶ Like the profane mockers in feasts, they gnashed upon me with their teeth.

³⁵ And the people stood viewing and the rulers together with them were also ridiculing him, saying, He saved others; let him save himself, if this one is the Christ, the chosen of God.

³⁹ Now one of the criminals who was hung there, was blaspheming him, saying, If you are the Christ save yourself and us!

⁵ But the disobedient Jews took for themselves some evil men from among the market-loafers, and having amassed a crowd, the city was in an uproar, and standing against the house of Jason, they were seeking to lead them into the public court.

Wise men die. The fool and the stupid alike perish and leave their wealth to others. ¹¹ Their inward thought is that their houses are everlasting, their dwelling-places to all generations. They call their lands after their own names.
¹² Even a man in splendor does not abide. He is like the beasts that perish. ¹³ This way of theirs is their folly. Yet men approve their sayings after them. Selah.

⁷ The fear of Jehovah is the beginning of knowledge. The foolish despise wisdom and instruction.

²² How long, you* simple ones, will you* love simplicity? And scoffers delight in their scoffing and fools hate knowledge?

²² Understanding is a well-spring of life to him who has it, but the correction of fools is folly.

⁶ For the fool will do senselessness and his heart will work wickedness, to practice profaneness and to utter error against Jehovah, to make empty the soul of the hungry and to cause the drink of the thirsty to fail.

¹⁸ The sons gather wood and the fathers kindle the fire and the women knead the dough, to make cakes to the queen of heaven and to pour out drink offerings to other gods, that they may provoke me to anger.

²⁴ Now she went out and said to her mother, What shall I ask for?
Now she said, The head of John the Immerser.

⁶ But he has made me a parable of the people and they spit in my face.

¹⁴ You make us a proverb among the nations, a shaking of the head among the peoples.

¹¹ When I made sackcloth my clothing, I became a parable to them. ¹² Those who sit at the gate talk of me and I am the song of the drunkards.

¹⁸ He loosens the bond of kings and he binds their loins with a belt.

²¹ He pours contempt upon rulers and weakens the strength of the strong.

⁹ Do not become as the horse, or as the mule, which have no understanding, whose trappings must be a bit and bridle to hold them in, else they will not come near to you.

²¹ Yes, they opened their mouth wide against me. They said, Aha, aha, our eye has seen it.

⁶⁷ Then they spat at his face and battered him, and some slapped him, ⁶⁸ saying, Prophesy to us, you Christ. Who is he who struck you?

³⁹ Now those who traveled by were blaspheming him, wagging their heads, ⁴⁰ and saying, He who tears-down the temple and builds it in three days, save yourself. If you are the Son of God, come down from the cross.
⁴¹ Now likewise, also the high-priests with the scribes and elders and Pharisees, mocking him, and were saying, ⁴² He saved others, yet he is not able to save himself. If he is the King of Israel; let him come down now from the cross and we will believe in him. ⁴³ He has confidence upon God. Let him rescue him now, if he is willing to save him; for he said, I am the Son of God. ⁴⁴ Now the robbers who were also crucified together with him were reproaching him with the same thing.

²⁶ If anyone among you thinks himself to be outwardly religious, though he does not bridle his tongue but deceiving his heart; this one’s religion is futile.

¹² As for my people, children are their oppressors and women rule over them. O my people, those who advance you, are making you go-astray and destroy the way of your paths.

¹⁵ And I am very greatly displeased with the nations that are at ease. For I was but a little displeased and they helped forward the affliction.

¹⁶ Who were snatched away before their time, whose foundation was poured out as a stream,

⁴ The cords of death encompassed me and the torrents of wickness made me afraid.

¹⁴ Deliver me out of the mud and do not let me sink. Let me be delivered from those who hate me and out of the deep waters. ¹⁵ Do not let the water flood overwhelm me, nor let the deep swallow me up. And do not let the pit shut its mouth upon me.

⁷ now therefore, behold, the Lord brings up upon them the waters of the River, strong and many, even the king of Assyria and all his glory. And it will come up over all its channels and go over all its banks, ⁸ and it will sweep onward into Judah. It will overflow and pass through; it will reach even to the neck. And the stretching out of its wings will fill the breadth of your land, O Immanuel.

²⁵ For the thing which I fear comes upon me and what I am afraid of comes to me.

⁴ For the arrows of the Almighty are within me, the poison of which my spirit drinks up. The terrors of God set themselves in array against me.

⁹ As the cloud is consumed and vanishes away, so he who goes down to Sheol will come up no more.

¹⁴ Then you scare me with dreams and terrify me through visions,

²⁷ If I say, I will forget my complaint. I will put off my sad countenance and be of good cheer, ²⁸ I am afraid of all my sorrows. I know that you will not hold me innocent.

¹⁶ And if my head exalts itself, you hunt me as a lion. And again you show yourself marvelous upon me.

²³ For calamity from God is a terror to me and I can do nothing because of his majesty.

⁴ My heart is greatly pained within me and the terrors of death have fallen upon me. ⁵ Fearfulness and trembling have come upon me and horror has overwhelmed me.

¹⁵ I am afflicted and ready to die from my youth up. While I suffer your terrors I am confounded.

²² I have blotted out, as a thick cloud, your transgressions, and as a cloud, your sins. Return to me, for I have redeemed you.

⁴ O Ephraim, what shall I do to you? O Judah, what shall I do to you? For your* goodness is as a morning cloud and as the dew that goes away early.

³ Therefore they will be as the morning cloud and as the dew that passes away early, as the chaff that is driven with the whirlwind out of the threshing-floor and as the smoke out of the chimney.

⁶ I am weary with my groaning. Every night I make my bed to swim. I water my couch with my tears.

² O my God, I cry in the daytime, but you do not answer; and in the night, and there is no silence for me.

² Because your arrows stick fast in me and your hand presses me severely. ³ There is no soundness in my flesh because of your indignation, nor is there any health in my bones because of my sin.

¹³ I quieted myself until morning. As a lion, so he breaks all my bones. From day even to night will you make an end of me.

⁷ So Satan went forth from the presence of Jehovah and killed* Job with severe boils from the sole of his foot to his crown.

⁵ My flesh is clothed with worms and clods of dust. My skin closes up and breaks out afresh.

²⁰ My bone cleaves to my skin and to my flesh and I have escaped with the skin of my teeth.

⁵ My wounds are loathsome and corrupt, because of my foolishness.

⁵ Why will you* still be stricken, that you* revolt more and more? The whole head is sick and the whole heart faint. ⁶ From the sole of the foot even to the head there is no soundness in it, but wounds and bruises and fresh stripes. They have not been closed nor bound up nor soothed with oil.

²⁷ And Abraham answered and said, Behold now, I have taken it upon me to speak to the Lord, who am I but dust and ashes.

⁸ And he took an earthen vessel for him to scrape himself with it and he sat among the ashes.

³¹ yet you will plunge me in the ditch and my own clothes will abhor me.

¹ Save me, O God, because the waters have come in to my soul. ² I sink in deep mud where there is no standing. I have come into deep waters, where the floods overflow me.

¹⁴ Deliver me out of the mud and do not let me sink. Let me be delivered from those who hate me and out of the deep waters.

⁶ Then they took Jeremiah and cast him into the pit of Malchijah the king's son, that was in the court of the guard. And they let Jeremiah down with cords. And in the pit there was no water, but mud and Jeremiah sank in the mud.

⁷ Behold, I cry out of wrong, but I am not heard. I cry for help, but there is no justice.

⁹ Will God hear his cry when trouble comes upon him?

⁴ O Jehovah God of hosts, how long will you be angry against the prayer of your people? ⁵ You have fed them with the bread of tears and given them tears to drink in large measure.

⁸ Yes, when I cry and call for help, he shuts out my prayer.

⁴⁴ You have covered yourself with a cloud, so that no prayer can pass through.

²³ But he answered her not a word.
And his disciples came and asked him, saying, Dismiss her, because she is crying behind us.

⁹ Even that it would please God to crush me, that he would let loose his hand and cut me off!

²⁰ If I have sinned, what do I do to you, O you, watcher of men? Why have you set me as a mark for you, so that I am a burden to myself? ²¹ And why do you not pardon my transgression and take away my iniquity? For now I will lie down in the dust and you will seek me diligently, but I will not be.

³ Is it good to you that you should oppress, that you should despise the work of your hands and shine upon the counsel of the wicked?

¹⁴ If I sin, then you mark me. And you will not acquit me from my iniquity. ¹⁵ If I am wicked, woe to me. And if I am righteous, yet I will not lift up my head, being filled with shame and looking upon my affliction.
¹⁶ And if my head exalts itself, you hunt me as a lion. And again you show yourself marvelous upon me. ¹⁷ You renew your witnesses against me and increase your indignation upon me. Changes and warfare are with me.

²⁵ Will you harass a driven leaf? And will you pursue the dry stubble?
²⁶ For you write bitter things against me and make me to inherit the iniquities of my youth. ²⁷ You also put my feet in the stocks and mark all my paths. You set a bound to the soles of my feet. ²⁸ Though I am like a rotten thing that decays, like a garment that is moth-eaten.

⁹ He has torn me in his wrath and persecuted me. He has gnashed upon me with his teeth. My adversary sharpens his eyes upon me. ¹⁰ They have opened wide their mouth upon me. They have struck me upon the cheek reproachfully. They gather themselves together against me. ¹¹ God delivers me to the perverse and casts me into the hands of the wicked.
¹² I was at ease and he broke me apart. Yes, he has taken me by the neck and dashed me to pieces. He has also set me up for his mark. ¹³ His archers encompass me all around. He splits my reins apart and does not spare. He pours out my gall upon the ground. ¹⁴ He breaks me with breach upon breach. He runs upon me like a giant.

⁶ know now that God has subverted me and has encompassed me with his net.
⁷ Behold, I cry out of wrong, but I am not heard. I cry for help, but there is no justice.
⁸ He has walled up my way that I cannot pass and has set darkness in my paths. ⁹ He has stripped me of my glory and taken the crown from my head.

²² Why do you* persecute me as God and are not satisfied with my flesh?

⁶ Would he contend with me in the greatness of his power? No, but he would give heed to me.

⁷ Will the Lord cast off everlasting? And will he be favorable no more? ⁸ Has his loving kindness ceased forever? Does his promise come to an end in this generation? ⁹ Has God forgotten to be gracious? Has he shut up his tender mercies in anger? Selah.

¹³ You have a mighty arm. Strong is your hand and high is your right hand.

¹⁴ All who love you have forgotten you; they do not seek you. For I have wounded you with the wound of an enemy, with the chastisement of a cruel one, for the greatness of your iniquity, because your sins were increased.

⁶ Therefore humble yourselves under the powerful hand of God, in order that he may exalt you in time;

¹⁷ For he breaks me with a tempest and multiplies my wounds without cause.

¹⁸ that they are as stubble before the wind and as chaff that the storm carries away?

²¹ The east wind carries him away and he departs and it whirlwinds him out of his place.

⁴ The wicked are not so, because they are like the chaff which the wind drives away.

¹⁰ And he rode upon a cherub and flew. Yes, he soared upon the wings of the wind.

³ who lays the beams of his chambers in the waters, who makes the clouds his chariot, who walks upon the wings of the wind,

¹³ The nations will rush like the rushing of many waters, but he will rebuke them. And they will flee far off and will be chased as the chaff of the mountains before the wind and like the whirling dust before the storm.

¹¹ At that time it will be said to this people and to Jerusalem, A hot wind from the bare heights in the wilderness toward the daughter of my people, not to winnow, nor to cleanse, ¹² a full wind from these will come for me. Now I will also utter judgments against them.

² A third part you will burn in the fire in the midst of the city when the days of the siege are fulfilled and you will take a third part and kill* with the sword all around it and a third part you will scatter to the wind. And I will draw out a sword after them.

¹⁹ The wind has wrapped her up in its wings and they will be put to shame because of their sacrifices.

¹⁹ You will eat bread by the sweat of your face, till you return to the ground, because out of it you were taken. For you are dust and you will return to dust.

¹⁴ For we must die and are as water split on the ground, which cannot be gathered up again; God does not take away life, but devises means that he who is banished is not an outcast from him.

¹⁹ The small and the great are there. And the servant is free from his master.

²² It is all one thing. Therefore I say, He destroys the perfect and the wicked.

⁸ Your hands have made me and fashioned me together all around, yet you destroy me.

⁵ Seeing his days are determined, the number of his months is with you and you have appointed his bounds that he cannot pass,

³³ The clods of the valley will be sweet to him. And all men will draw after him, as there were innumerable before him.

⁸ There is no man who has power over the spirit to retain the spirit, nor has he power over the day of death. And there is no discharge in war. Neither will wickedness deliver he who is given to it.

⁵ Because the living know that they will die, but the dead do not know anything, nor have they anymore a reward, because the memory of them is forgotten.

⁵ yes, they will be afraid of height and terrors will be in the way and the almond tree will blossom and the grasshopper will be a burden and desire will fail, because man goes to his everlasting home and the mourners go about the streets, ⁶ before the silver cord is loosed, or the golden bowl is broken, or the pitcher is broken at the fountain, or the wheel broken at the cistern, ⁷ and the dust returns to the earth as it was and the spirit returns to God who gave it.

²⁷ And inasmuch as it is laid up for men to die once but after this is the judgment;

³¹ So let all your enemies perish, O Jehovah, but let those who love him be as the sun when he goes forth in his might.
And the land had rest forty years.

²⁵ Do not let them say in their heart, Aha, so would we have it. Do not let them say, We have swallowed him up.

⁴ They turn the needy out of the way. The poor of the earth all hide themselves.

¹⁶ If I have withheld the poor from their desire, or have caused the eyes of the widow to fail, ¹⁷ or have eaten my morsel alone and the fatherless has not eaten of it ¹⁸ (no, from my youth he grew up with me as with a father and her I have guided from my mother's womb); ¹⁹ if I have seen any perish for lack of clothing, or that the needy had no covering; ²⁰ if his loins have not blessed me and if he has not been warmed with the fleece of my sheep; ²¹ if I have lifted up my hand against the fatherless, because I saw my help in the gate,

¹ Help, Jehovah, because the holy man ceases, because the faithful fail from among the sons of men.

¹³ But as for me, when they were sick my clothing was sackcloth. I afflicted my soul with fasting and my prayer returned into my own bosom. ¹⁴ I behaved myself as though it had been my friend or my brother. I bowed down mourning, as he who weeps for his mother.

²¹ He who despises his neighbor sins, but he who has pity on the poor, he is fortunate.

³¹ He who oppresses a poor man reproaches his maker, but he who has mercy on a needy man honors him.

⁵ He who mocks a poor man reproaches his maker. He who is glad at calamity will not be unpunished.

¹⁷ He who has pity upon a poor man lends to Jehovah and he will repay him his good deed.

⁸ He who multiplies his substance by interest and increase, gathers it for him who has pity on the poor.

⁷ Is it not to deal your bread to a hungry man and that you bring the poor who are cast out to your house, when you see a naked man, that you cover him and that you not hide yourself from your own flesh?
⁸ Then your light will break forth as the morning and your healing will spring forth speedily. And your righteousness will go before you. The glory of Jehovah will be your rearward.

¹⁷ But if you* will not hear it, my soul will weep in secret for your* pride. And my eye will weep greatly and run down with tears, because Jehovah's flock is taken captive.

²⁰ Shall evil be recompensed for good? For they have dug a pit for my soul. Remember how I stood before you to speak good for them, to turn away your wrath from them.

²⁷ Therefore, O king, let my counsel be acceptable to you and break off your sins by righteousness and your iniquities by showing mercy to the poor, if there may be a lengthening of your tranquility.

⁴¹ And as he drew near, he saw the city and wept over it,

³⁵ Jesus shed-tears.

¹⁵ Ready to rejoice with the ones rejoicing and to weep with the ones weeping.

⁹ as it has been written, ‘He has scattered them, he has given to the poor; his righteousness remains forever.’

²⁵ For the thing which I fear comes upon me and what I am afraid of comes to me. ²⁶ I am not at ease, nor am I quiet, neither have I rest, but trouble comes.

⁶ The light will be dark in his tent and his lamp above him will be put out.

¹⁸ He will be driven from light into darkness and chased out of the world.

⁸ He has walled up my way that I cannot pass and has set darkness in my paths.

¹⁷ because I was not cut off before the darkness, nor did he cover the thick darkness from my face.

¹⁸ Then I said, I will die in my nest and I will multiply my days as the sand.

¹¹ Light is sown for the righteous man and gladness for the upright in heart.

¹⁰ Who is among you* that fears Jehovah, who obeys the voice of his servant? He who walks in darkness and has no light, let him trust in the name of Jehovah and rely upon his God.

¹⁵ We looked for peace, but no good came, for a time of healing, and behold, dismay!

¹⁹ Have you utterly rejected Judah? Has your soul loathed Zion? Why have you struck us and there is no healing for us? We looked for peace, but no good came and for a time of healing, and behold, dismay!

⁴ Our fathers trusted in you. They trusted and you delivered them.

¹⁹ My anguish, my anguish! I am pained at my very heart. My heart is in an uproar in me. I cannot hold my peace, because you have heard, O my soul, the sound of the trumpet, the alarm of war.

²⁰ Is Ephraim my dear son? Is he a darling child? For as often as I speak against him, I do earnestly remember him still. Therefore my heart yearns for him. I will surely have mercy upon him, says Jehovah.

²⁰ Behold, O Jehovah, for I am in distress. My heart is troubled. My heart is turned within me. For I have grievously rebelled. Abroad the sword bereaves; at home there is as death.

¹¹ My eyes fail with tears, my heart is troubled, my liver is poured upon the earth, because of the destruction of the daughter of my people, because the young sons and the nursing-babes faint in the streets of the city.

⁶ I am pained and bowed down greatly. I go mourning all the day long.

⁹ I will say to God my rock, Why have you forgotten me? Why do I go mourning because of the oppression of the enemy?

² Because you are the God of my strength. Why have you cast me off? Why do I go mourning because of the oppression of the enemy?

³ He was despised and rejected by men, a man of sorrows and acquainted with grief. And as him from whom men hide their face he was despised and we esteemed him not.
⁴ Surely he has borne our griefs and has carried our sorrows.
Yet we esteemed him stricken, struck by God and afflicted.

¹ I am the man who has seen affliction by the rod of his wrath. ² He has led me and caused me to walk in darkness and not in light. ³ Surely he turns his hand against me, again and again all the day.

¹⁴ if I have said to corruption, You are my father, to the worm, My mother and my sister,

¹⁹ that you have greatly broken us in the place of jackals and covered us with the shadow of death.

⁶ I am like a pelican of the wilderness. I have become as an owl of the waste places.

²¹ But wild beasts of the desert will lie there and their houses will be full of doleful creatures. And ostriches will dwell there and wild goats will dance there. ²² And wolves will cry in their castles and jackals in the pleasant palaces. And her time is near to come and her days will not be prolonged.

¹⁴ Like a swallow or a crane, so I chattered. I moaned as a dove. My eyes fail with looking upward. O Lord, I am oppressed, be my surety.

⁸ For this I will lament and wail. I will go stripped and naked. I will make a wailing like the jackals and a lamentation like the ostriches.

³ but Esau I hated and made his mountains a desolation and gave his heritage to the jackals of the wilderness.

⁴ He has made my flesh and my skin old. He has broken my bones.

⁸ Their visage is blacker than a coal. They are not known in the streets. Their skin clings to their bones. It is withered. It has become like a stick.

¹⁰ Our skin is black like an oven, because of the burning heat of famine.

¹ We sat down there by the rivers of Babylon, yes, we wept when we remembered Zion. ² We hung up our harps upon the willows in the midst of it.
³ Because those who led us captive there required of us songs and those who wasted us, gladness, saying, Sing for us one of the songs of Zion.
⁴ How will we sing Jehovah's song in a foreign land?

⁴ a time to weep and a time to laugh, a time to mourn and a time to dance,

⁴ My heart wanders. Horror has frightened me. The twilight that I desired has been turned into trembling to me.

¹² And in that day the Lord, Jehovah of hosts, called for weeping and for mourning and for baldness and for girding with sackcloth.

⁷ The new wine mourns. The vine languishes. All the merry-hearted do sigh. ⁸ The joy of tambourine ceases. The noise of those who rejoice ends. The joy of the harp ceases. ⁹ They will not drink wine with a song. Strong drink will be bitter to those who drink it.

¹⁵ The joy of our heart is ceased, our dance is turned into mourning.

¹⁸ Then the king went to his palace and passed the night fasting, nor were instruments of music brought before him. And his sleep fled from him.
