¹⁹ For he has oppressed and forsaken the poor; he has seized houses he did not build.

³³ A people you do not know will eat the produce of your land and of all your toil. All your days you will be oppressed and crushed.

³ Here I am. Bear witness against me before the LORD and before His anointed: Whose ox or donkey have I taken? Whom have I cheated or oppressed? From whose hand have I accepted a bribe and closed my eyes? Tell me, and I will restore it to you.” ⁴ “You have not wronged us or oppressed us,” they replied, “nor have you taken anything from the hand of man.”

¹⁹ Tell him that this is what the LORD says: ‘Have you not murdered a man and seized his land?’ Then tell him that this is also what the LORD says: ‘In the place where the dogs licked up the blood of Naboth, there also the dogs will lick up your blood—yes, yours!’”

¹⁵ Fire resides in his tent; burning sulfur rains down on his dwelling.

²⁷ Behold, I know your thoughts full well, the schemes by which you would wrong me. ²⁸ For you say, ‘Where now is the nobleman’s house, and where are the tents in which the wicked dwell?’

⁶ For you needlessly demanded security from your brothers and deprived the naked of their clothing.

² Men move boundary stones; they pasture stolen flocks. ³ They drive away the donkey of the fatherless and take the widow’s ox in pledge. ⁴ They push the needy off the road and force all the poor of the land into hiding. ⁵ Indeed, like wild donkeys in the desert, the poor go to work foraging for food; the wasteland is food for their children. ⁶ They gather fodder in the fields and glean the vineyards of the wicked. ⁷ Without clothing, they spend the night naked; they have no covering against the cold. ⁸ Drenched by mountain rains, they huddle against the rocks for want of shelter. ⁹ The fatherless infant is snatched from the breast; the nursing child of the poor is seized for a debt. ¹⁰ Without clothing, they wander about naked. They carry the sheaves, but still go hungry. ¹¹ They crush olives within their walls; they tread the winepresses, but go thirsty. ¹² From the city, men groan, and the souls of the wounded cry out, yet God charges no one with wrongdoing.

¹³ If I have rejected the cause of my manservant or maidservant when they made a complaint against me, ¹⁴ what will I do when God rises to judge? How will I answer when called to account? ¹⁵ Did not He who made me in the womb also make them? Did not the same One form us in the womb? ¹⁶ If I have denied the desires of the poor or allowed the widow’s eyes to fail, ¹⁷ if I have eaten my morsel alone, not sharing it with the fatherless— ¹⁸ though from my youth I reared him as would a father, and from my mother’s womb I guided the widow— ¹⁹ if I have seen one perish for lack of clothing, or a needy man without a cloak, ²⁰ if his heart has not blessed me for warming him with the fleece of my sheep, ²¹ if I have lifted up my hand against the fatherless because I saw that I had support in the gate, ²² then may my arm fall from my shoulder and be torn from its socket.

³⁸ if my land cries out against me and its furrows weep together, ³⁹ if I have devoured its produce without payment or broken the spirit of its tenants,

⁹ Men cry out under great oppression; they plead for relief from the arm of the mighty.

¹⁸ to vindicate the fatherless and oppressed, that the men of the earth may strike terror no more.

⁵ “For the cause of the oppressed and for the groaning of the needy, I will now arise,” says the LORD. “I will bring safety to him who yearns.”

³¹ Whoever oppresses the poor taunts their Maker, but whoever is kind to the needy honors Him.

²² Do not rob a poor man because he is poor, and do not crush the afflicted at the gate, ²³ for the LORD will take up their case and will plunder those who rob them.

¹ Again I looked, and I considered all the oppression taking place under the sun. I saw the tears of the oppressed, and they had no comforter; the power lay in the hands of their oppressors, and there was no comforter.

⁸ If you see the oppression of the poor and the denial of justice and righteousness in the province, do not be astonished at the matter; for one official is watched by a superior, and others higher still are over them.

⁷ For the vineyard of the LORD of Hosts is the house of Israel, and the men of Judah are the plant of His delight. He looked for justice, but saw bloodshed; for righteousness, but heard a cry of distress. ⁸ Woe to you who add house to house and join field to field until no place is left and you live alone in the land.

³⁴ To crush underfoot all the prisoners of the land,

²⁹ The people of the land have practiced extortion and committed robbery. They have oppressed the poor and needy and have exploited the foreign resident without justice.

¹ Hear this word, you cows of Bashan on Mount Samaria, you women who oppress the poor and crush the needy, who say to your husbands, “Bring us more to drink.” ² The Lord GOD has sworn by His holiness: “Behold, the days are coming when you will be taken away with hooks, and your posterity with fishhooks. ³ You will go out through broken walls, each one straight ahead of her, and you will be cast out toward Harmon,” declares the LORD.

² They covet fields and seize them; they take away houses. They deprive a man of his home, a fellow man of his inheritance.

⁹ You drive the women of My people from their pleasant homes. You take away My blessing from their children forever.

⁶ But you have dishonored the poor. Is it not the rich who oppress you and drag you into court?

¹³ For judgment without mercy will be shown to anyone who has not been merciful. Mercy triumphs over judgment.

⁴ Look, the wages you withheld from the workmen who mowed your fields are crying out against you. The cries of the harvesters have reached the ears of the Lord of Hosts.
