² “How you have helped the powerless and saved the arm that is feeble!

²⁷ At noon Elijah began to taunt them, saying, “Shout louder, for he is a god! Perhaps he is deep in thought, or occupied, or on a journey. Perhaps he is sleeping and must be awakened!”

³ Surely you have instructed many, and have strengthened their feeble hands. ⁴ Your words have steadied those who stumbled; you have braced the knees that were buckling.

¹² Is my strength like that of stone, or my flesh made of bronze?

²⁵ How painful are honest words! But what does your argument prove?

² “Truly then you are the people with whom wisdom itself will die!

⁴ I could also speak like you if you were in my place; I could heap up words against you and shake my head at you. ⁵ But I would encourage you with my mouth, and the consolation of my lips would bring relief.

⁹ Do not discard me in my old age; do not forsake me when my strength fails.

³ Strengthen the limp hands and steady the feeble knees! ⁴ Say to those with anxious hearts: “Be strong, do not fear! Behold, your God will come with vengeance. With divine retribution He will come to save you.”

¹⁴ Whom did He consult to enlighten Him, and who taught Him the paths of justice? Who imparted knowledge to Him and showed Him the way of understanding?

⁵ The islands see and fear; the ends of the earth tremble. They approach and come forward. ⁶ Each one helps the other and says to his brother, “Be strong!” ⁷ The craftsman encourages the goldsmith, and he who wields the hammer cheers him who strikes the anvil, saying of the welding, “It is good.” He nails it down so it will not be toppled.
