¹ Then Jesus was led by the Spirit into the wilderness to be tempted by the devil. ² After fasting forty days and forty nights, He was hungry. ³ The tempter came to Him and said, “If You are the Son of God, tell these stones to become bread.” ⁴ But Jesus answered, “It is written: ‘Man shall not live on bread alone, but on every word that comes from the mouth of God.’” ⁵ Then the devil took Him to the holy city and set Him on the pinnacle of the temple. ⁶ “If You are the Son of God,” he said, “throw Yourself down. For it is written: ‘He will command His angels concerning You, and they will lift You up in their hands, so that You will not strike Your foot against a stone.’” ⁷ Jesus replied, “It is also written: ‘Do not put the Lord your God to the test.’” ⁸ Again, the devil took Him to a very high mountain and showed Him all the kingdoms of the world and their glory. ⁹ “All this I will give You,” he said, “if You will fall down and worship me.” ¹⁰ “Get behind Me, Satan!” Jesus declared. “For it is written: ‘Worship the Lord your God and serve Him only.’” ¹¹ Then the devil left Him, and angels came and ministered to Him. ¹² When Jesus heard that John had been imprisoned, He withdrew to Galilee. ¹³ Leaving Nazareth, He went and lived in Capernaum, which is by the sea in the region of Zebulun and Naphtali, ¹⁴ to fulfill what was spoken through the prophet Isaiah: ¹⁵ “Land of Zebulun and land of Naphtali, the Way of the Sea, beyond the Jordan, Galilee of the Gentiles— ¹⁶ the people living in darkness have seen a great light; on those living in the land of the shadow of death, a light has dawned.” ¹⁷ From that time on Jesus began to preach, “Repent, for the kingdom of heaven is near.” ¹⁸ As Jesus was walking beside the Sea of Galilee, He saw two brothers, Simon called Peter and his brother Andrew. They were casting a net into the sea, for they were fishermen. ¹⁹ “Come, follow Me,” Jesus said, “and I will make you fishers of men.” ²⁰ And at once they left their nets and followed Him. ²¹ Going on from there, He saw two other brothers, James son of Zebedee and his brother John. They were in a boat with their father Zebedee, mending their nets. Jesus called them, ²² and immediately they left the boat and their father and followed Him. ²³ Jesus went throughout Galilee, teaching in their synagogues, preaching the gospel of the kingdom, and healing every disease and sickness among the people. ²⁴ News about Him spread all over Syria, and people brought to Him all who were ill with various diseases, those suffering acute pain, the demon-possessed, those having seizures, and the paralyzed—and He healed them. ²⁵ The large crowds that followed Him came from Galilee, the Decapolis, Jerusalem, Judea, and beyond the Jordan.

¹⁵ And I will put enmity between you and the woman, and between your seed and her seed. He will crush your head, and you will strike his heel.”

¹² I do not know where the Spirit of the LORD may carry you off when I leave you. Then when I go and tell Ahab and he does not find you, he will kill me. But I, your servant, have feared the LORD from my youth.

¹⁶ “Look now,” they said to Elisha, “we your servants have fifty valiant men. Please let them go and search for your master. Perhaps the Spirit of the LORD has taken him up and put him on one of the mountains or in one of the valleys.” “Do not send them,” Elisha replied.

¹² Then the Spirit lifted me up, and I heard a great rumbling sound behind me: ‘Blessed be the glory of the LORD in His dwelling place!’

¹⁴ So the Spirit lifted me up and took me away, and I went in bitterness and in the anger of my spirit, with the strong hand of the LORD upon me.

³ He stretched out what looked like a hand and took me by the hair of my head. Then the Spirit lifted me up between earth and heaven and carried me in visions of God to Jerusalem, to the entrance of the north gate of the inner court, where the idol that provokes jealousy was seated.

¹ Then the Spirit lifted me up and brought me to the gate of the house of the LORD that faces east. And there at the entrance of the gate were twenty-five men. Among them I saw Jaazaniah son of Azzur and Pelatiah son of Benaiah, who were leaders of the people.

²⁴ And the Spirit lifted me up and carried me back to Chaldea, to the exiles in the vision given by the Spirit of God. After the vision had gone up from me,

² In visions of God He took me to the land of Israel and set me on a very high mountain, on whose southern slope was a structure that resembled a city.

⁵ Then the Spirit lifted me up and brought me into the inner court, and the glory of the LORD filled the temple.

¹² At once the Spirit drove Jesus into the wilderness, ¹³ and He was there for forty days, being tempted by Satan. He was with the wild animals, and the angels ministered to Him. ¹⁴ After the arrest of John, Jesus went into Galilee and proclaimed the gospel of the kingdom of God. ¹⁵ “The time is fulfilled,” He said, “and the kingdom of God is near. Repent and believe in the gospel!”

¹ Then Jesus, full of the Holy Spirit, returned from the Jordan and was led by the Spirit into the wilderness, ² where for forty days He was tempted by the devil. He ate nothing during those days, and afterward, when they had ended, He was hungry. ³ The devil said to Him, “If You are the Son of God, tell this stone to become bread.” ⁴ But Jesus answered, “It is written: ‘Man shall not live on bread alone, but on every word of God.’” ⁵ Then the devil led Him up to a high mountain and showed Him in an instant all the kingdoms of the world. ⁶ “I will give You authority over all these kingdoms and all their glory,” he said. “For it has been relinquished to me, and I can give it to anyone I wish. ⁷ So if You worship me, it will all be Yours.” ⁸ But Jesus answered, “Get behind Me, Satan! It is written: ‘Worship the Lord your God and serve Him only.’” ⁹ Then the devil led Him to Jerusalem and set Him on the pinnacle of the temple. “If You are the Son of God,” he said, “throw Yourself down from here. ¹⁰ For it is written: ‘He will command His angels concerning You to guard You carefully; ¹¹ and they will lift You up in their hands, so that You will not strike Your foot against a stone.’” ¹² But Jesus answered, “It also says, ‘Do not put the Lord your God to the test.’” ¹³ When the devil had finished every temptation, he left Him until an opportune time.

³⁰ I will not speak with you much longer, for the prince of this world is coming, and he has no claim on Me.

³⁹ When they came up out of the water, the Spirit of the Lord carried Philip away, and the eunuch saw him no more, but went on his way rejoicing.

¹⁴ For all who are led by the Spirit of God are sons of God.

¹⁸ Because He Himself suffered when He was tempted, He is able to help those who are being tempted.

¹⁵ For we do not have a high priest who is unable to sympathize with our weaknesses, but we have one who was tempted in every way that we are, yet was without sin. ¹⁶ Let us then approach the throne of grace with confidence, so that we may receive mercy and find grace to help us in our time of need.

¹⁸ Moses entered the cloud as he went up on the mountain, and he remained on the mountain forty days and forty nights.

²⁸ So Moses was there with the LORD forty days and forty nights without eating bread or drinking water. He wrote on the tablets the words of the covenant—the Ten Commandments.

⁹ When I went up on the mountain to receive the tablets of stone, the tablets of the covenant that the LORD made with you, I stayed on the mountain forty days and forty nights. I ate no bread and drank no water.

¹⁸ Then I fell down before the LORD for forty days and forty nights, as I had done the first time. I did not eat bread or drink water because of all the sin you had committed in doing what was evil in the sight of the LORD and provoking Him to anger.

²⁵ So I fell down before the LORD for forty days and forty nights, because the LORD had said He would destroy you.

¹⁸ I will raise up for them a prophet like you from among their brothers. I will put My words in his mouth, and he will tell them everything I command him.

⁸ So he got up and ate and drank. And strengthened by that food, he walked forty days and forty nights until he reached Horeb, the mountain of God.

¹⁸ In the morning, as Jesus was returning to the city, He was hungry.

¹² The next day, when they had left Bethany, Jesus was hungry.

² where for forty days He was tempted by the devil. He ate nothing during those days, and afterward, when they had ended, He was hungry.

⁶ Since Jacob’s well was there, Jesus, weary from His journey, sat down by the well. It was about the sixth hour.

¹⁴ Now since the children have flesh and blood, He too shared in their humanity, so that by His death He might destroy him who holds the power of death, that is, the devil, ¹⁵ and free those who all their lives were held in slavery by their fear of death. ¹⁶ For surely it is not the angels He helps, but the descendants of Abraham. ¹⁷ For this reason He had to be made like His brothers in every way, so that He might become a merciful and faithful high priest in service to God, in order to make atonement for the sins of the people.

¹ Now the serpent was more crafty than any beast of the field that the LORD God had made. And he said to the woman, “Did God really say, ‘You must not eat from any tree in the garden?’” ² The woman answered the serpent, “We may eat the fruit of the trees of the garden, ³ but about the fruit of the tree in the middle of the garden, God has said, ‘You must not eat of it or touch it, or you will die.’” ⁴ “You will not surely die,” the serpent told her. ⁵ “For God knows that in the day you eat of it, your eyes will be opened and you will be like God, knowing good and evil.”

²⁹ One day, while Jacob was cooking some stew, Esau came in from the field and was famished. ³⁰ He said to Jacob, “Let me eat some of that red stew, for I am famished.” (That is why he was also called Edom.) ³¹ “First sell me your birthright,” Jacob replied. ³² “Look,” said Esau, “I am about to die, so what good is a birthright to me?” ³³ “Swear to me first,” Jacob said. So Esau swore to Jacob and sold him the birthright. ³⁴ Then Jacob gave some bread and lentil stew to Esau, who ate and drank and then got up and went away. Thus Esau despised his birthright.

³ “If only we had died by the LORD’s hand in the land of Egypt!” they said. “There we sat by pots of meat and ate our fill of bread, but you have brought us into this desert to starve this whole assembly to death!”

⁴ Meanwhile, the rabble among them had a strong craving for other food, and again the Israelites wept and said, “Who will feed us meat? ⁵ We remember the fish we ate freely in Egypt, along with the cucumbers, melons, leeks, onions, and garlic. ⁶ But now our appetite is gone; there is nothing to see but this manna!”

⁹ Satan answered the LORD, “Does Job fear God for nothing? ¹⁰ Have You not placed a hedge on every side around him and his household and all that he owns? You have blessed the work of his hands, and his possessions have increased in the land. ¹¹ But stretch out Your hand and strike all that he has, and he will surely curse You to Your face.” ¹² “Very well,” said the LORD to Satan. “Everything he has is in your hands, but you must not lay a hand on the man himself.” Then Satan went out from the presence of the LORD.

⁴ “Skin for skin!” Satan replied. “A man will give up all he owns in exchange for his life. ⁵ But stretch out Your hand and strike his flesh and bones, and he will surely curse You to Your face.” ⁶ “Very well,” said the LORD to Satan. “He is in your hands, but you must spare his life.” ⁷ So Satan went out from the presence of the LORD and infected Job with terrible boils from the soles of his feet to the crown of his head.

¹⁷ But they continued to sin against Him, rebelling in the desert against the Most High. ¹⁸ They willfully tested God by demanding the food they craved. ¹⁹ They spoke against God, saying, “Can God really prepare a table in the wilderness? ²⁰ When He struck the rock, water gushed out and torrents raged. But can He also give bread or supply His people with meat?”

¹⁷ And a voice from heaven said, “This is My beloved Son, in whom I am well pleased!”

³³ Then those who were in the boat came and worshipped Him, saying, “Truly You are the Son of God!”

³ The devil said to Him, “If You are the Son of God, tell this stone to become bread.”

⁹ Then the devil led Him to Jerusalem and set Him on the pinnacle of the temple. “If You are the Son of God,” he said, “throw Yourself down from here.

³¹ And the Lord said “Simon, Simon, Satan has asked to sift each of you like wheat. ³² But I have prayed for you, Simon, that your faith will not fail. And when you have turned back, strengthen your brothers.”

²⁰ Saul promptly began to proclaim Christ in the synagogues, declaring, “He is the Son of God.”

⁵ For this reason, when I could bear it no longer, I sent to find out about your faith, for fear that the tempter had somehow tempted you and caused our labor to be in vain.

¹⁶ See to it that no one is sexually immoral, or is godless like Esau, who for a single meal sold his birthright.

¹⁰ Do not fear what you are about to suffer. Look, the devil is about to throw some of you into prison to test you, and you will suffer tribulation for ten days. Be faithful even unto death, and I will give you the crown of life.

⁹ And the great dragon was hurled down—that ancient serpent called the devil and Satan, the deceiver of the whole world. He was hurled to the earth, and his angels with him. ¹⁰ And I heard a loud voice in heaven saying: “Now have come the salvation and the power and the kingdom of our God, and the authority of His Christ. For the accuser of our brothers has been thrown down—he who accuses them day and night before our God. ¹¹ They have conquered him by the blood of the Lamb and by the word of their testimony. And they did not love their lives so as to shy away from death.

⁸ And Moses added, “The LORD will give you meat to eat this evening and bread to fill you in the morning, for He has heard your grumbling against Him. Who are we? Your grumblings are not against us but against the LORD.”

¹⁵ When the Israelites saw it, they asked one another, “What is it?” For they did not know what it was. So Moses told them, “It is the bread that the LORD has given you to eat.

³⁵ The Israelites ate manna forty years, until they came to a land where they could settle; they ate manna until they reached the border of Canaan.

¹⁵ You are to keep the Feast of Unleavened Bread as I commanded you: At the appointed time in the month of Abib you are to eat unleavened bread for seven days, because that was the month you came out of Egypt. No one may appear before Me empty-handed.

³ He humbled you, and in your hunger He gave you manna to eat, which neither you nor your fathers had known, so that you might understand that man does not live on bread alone, but on every word that comes from the mouth of the LORD.

¹² But she replied, “As surely as the LORD your God lives, I have no bread—only a handful of flour in a jar and a little oil in a jug. Look, I am gathering a couple of sticks to take home and prepare a meal for myself and my son, so that we may eat it and die.” ¹³ “Do not be afraid,” Elijah said to her. “Go and do as you have said. But first make me a small cake of bread from what you have, and bring it out to me. Afterward, make some for yourself and your son, ¹⁴ for this is what the LORD, the God of Israel, says: ‘The jar of flour will not be exhausted and the jug of oil will not run dry until the day the LORD sends rain upon the face of the earth.’” ¹⁵ So she went and did according to the word of Elijah, and there was food every day for Elijah and the woman and her household. ¹⁶ The jar of flour was not exhausted and the jug of oil did not run dry, according to the word that the LORD had spoken through Elijah.

⁴² Now a man from Baal-shalishah came to the man of God with a sack of twenty loaves of barley bread from the first ripe grain. “Give it to the people to eat,” said Elisha. ⁴³ But his servant asked, “How am I to set twenty loaves before a hundred men?” “Give it to the people to eat,” said Elisha, “for this is what the LORD says: ‘They will eat and have some left over.’” ⁴⁴ So he set it before them, and they ate and had some left over, according to the word of the LORD.

¹ Then Elisha said, “Hear the word of the LORD! This is what the LORD says: ‘About this time tomorrow at the gate of Samaria, a seah of fine flour will sell for a shekel, and two seahs of barley will sell for a shekel.’” ² But the officer on whose arm the king leaned answered the man of God, “Look, even if the LORD were to make windows in heaven, could this really happen?” “You will see it with your own eyes,” replied Elisha, “but you will not eat any of it.”

¹⁶ from that time, when one came expecting a heap of twenty ephahs of grain, there were but ten. When one came to the winepress to draw out fifty baths, there were but twenty. ¹⁷ I struck you—all the work of your hands—with blight, mildew, and hail, but you did not turn to Me, declares the LORD. ¹⁸ Consider carefully from this day forward—from the twenty-fourth day of the ninth month, the day the foundation of the LORD’s temple was laid—consider carefully: ¹⁹ Is there still seed in the barn? The vine, the fig, the pomegranate, and the olive tree have not yet yielded fruit. But from this day on, I will bless you.”

⁹ You are cursed with a curse, yet you—the whole nation—are still robbing Me. ¹⁰ Bring the full tithe into the storehouse, so that there may be food in My house. Test Me in this,” says the LORD of Hosts. “See if I will not open the windows of heaven and pour out for you blessing without measure. ¹¹ I will rebuke the devourer for you, so that it will not destroy the fruits of your land, and the vine in your field will not fail to produce fruit,” says the LORD of Hosts.

⁷ Jesus replied, “It is also written: ‘Do not put the Lord your God to the test.’”

¹⁰ “Get behind Me, Satan!” Jesus declared. “For it is written: ‘Worship the Lord your God and serve Him only.’”

¹⁶ “They do not need to go away,” Jesus replied. “You give them something to eat.” ¹⁷ “We have here only five loaves of bread and two fish,” they answered. ¹⁸ “Bring them here to Me,” Jesus said. ¹⁹ And He directed the crowds to sit down on the grass. Taking the five loaves and the two fish and looking up to heaven, He spoke a blessing. Then He broke the loaves and gave them to the disciples, and the disciples gave them to the people. ²⁰ They all ate and were satisfied, and the disciples picked up twelve basketfuls of broken pieces that were left over. ²¹ About five thousand men were fed, in addition to women and children.

³⁸ “Go and see how many loaves you have,” He told them. And after checking, they said, “Five—and two fish.” ³⁹ Then Jesus directed them to have the people sit in groups on the green grass. ⁴⁰ So they sat down in groups of hundreds and fifties. ⁴¹ Taking the five loaves and the two fish and looking up to heaven, Jesus spoke a blessing and broke the loaves. Then He gave them to His disciples to set before the people. And He divided the two fish among them all. ⁴² They all ate and were satisfied, ⁴³ and the disciples picked up twelve basketfuls of broken pieces of bread and fish. ⁴⁴ And there were five thousand men who had eaten the loaves.

⁴ His disciples replied, “Where in this desolate place could anyone find enough bread to feed all these people?” ⁵ “How many loaves do you have?” Jesus asked. “Seven,” they replied. ⁶ And He instructed the crowd to sit down on the ground. Then He took the seven loaves, gave thanks and broke them, and gave them to His disciples to set before the people. And they distributed them to the crowd. ⁷ They also had a few small fish, and Jesus blessed them and ordered that these be set before them as well. ⁸ The people ate and were satisfied, and the disciples picked up seven basketfuls of broken pieces that were left over. ⁹ And about four thousand men who had eaten were present. As soon as Jesus had dismissed the crowd,

⁴ But Jesus answered, “It is written: ‘Man shall not live on bread alone, but on every word of God.’”

⁸ But Jesus answered, “Get behind Me, Satan! It is written: ‘Worship the Lord your God and serve Him only.’”

¹² But Jesus answered, “It also says, ‘Do not put the Lord your God to the test.’”

⁵ When Jesus looked up and saw a large crowd coming toward Him, He said to Philip, “Where can we buy bread for these people to eat?” ⁶ But He was asking this to test him, for He knew what He was about to do. ⁷ Philip answered, “Two hundred denarii would not buy enough bread for each of them to have a small piece.” ⁸ One of His disciples, Andrew, Simon Peter’s brother, said to Him, ⁹ “Here is a boy with five barley loaves and two small fish. But what difference will these make among so many?” ¹⁰ “Have the people sit down,” Jesus said. Now there was plenty of grass in that place, so the men sat down, about five thousand of them. ¹¹ Then Jesus took the loaves, gave thanks, and distributed them to the disciples, and the disciples to those who were seated—and the fish—as much as they wanted. ¹² And when everyone was full, He said to His disciples, “Gather the pieces that are left over, so that nothing will be wasted.” ¹³ So they collected them and filled twelve baskets with the pieces of the five barley loaves left over by those who had eaten. ¹⁴ When the people saw the sign that Jesus had performed, they began to say, “Truly this is the Prophet who is to come into the world.” ¹⁵ Then Jesus, realizing that they were about to come and make Him king by force, withdrew to a mountain by Himself.

³¹ Our fathers ate the manna in the wilderness, as it is written: ‘He gave them bread from heaven to eat.’” ³² Jesus said to them, “Truly, truly, I tell you, it was not Moses who gave you the bread from heaven, but it is My Father who gives you the true bread from heaven. ³³ For the bread of God is He who comes down from heaven and gives life to the world.” ³⁴ “Sir,” they said, “give us this bread at all times.” ³⁵ Jesus answered, “I am the bread of life. Whoever comes to Me will never hunger, and whoever believes in Me will never thirst. ³⁶ But as I stated, you have seen Me and still you do not believe. ³⁷ Everyone the Father gives Me will come to Me, and the one who comes to Me I will never drive away. ³⁸ For I have come down from heaven, not to do My own will, but to do the will of Him who sent Me. ³⁹ And this is the will of the Father who sent Me, that I shall lose none of those He has given Me, but raise them up at the last day. ⁴⁰ And it is the will of Him who sent Me that everyone who looks to the Son and believes in Him shall have eternal life, and I will raise him up at the last day.” ⁴¹ At this, the Jews began to grumble about Jesus because He had said, “I am the bread that came down from heaven.” ⁴² They were asking, “Is this not Jesus, the son of Joseph, whose father and mother we know? How then can He say, ‘I have come down from heaven?’” ⁴³ “Stop grumbling among yourselves,” Jesus therefore replied. ⁴⁴ “No one can come to Me unless the Father who sent Me draws him, and I will raise him up at the last day. ⁴⁵ It is written in the Prophets: ‘And they will all be taught by God.’ Therefore everyone who has heard the Father and learned from Him comes to Me— ⁴⁶ not that anyone has seen the Father except the One who is from God; only He has seen the Father. ⁴⁷ Truly, truly, I tell you, he who believes in Me has eternal life. ⁴⁸ I am the bread of life. ⁴⁹ Your fathers ate the manna in the wilderness, yet they died. ⁵⁰ This is the bread that comes down from heaven, so that anyone may eat of it and not die. ⁵¹ I am the living bread that came down from heaven. If anyone eats of this bread, he will live forever. And this bread, which I will give for the life of the world, is My flesh.” ⁵² At this, the Jews began to argue among themselves, “How can this man give us His flesh to eat?” ⁵³ So Jesus said to them, “Truly, truly, I tell you, unless you eat the flesh and drink the blood of the Son of Man, you have no life in you. ⁵⁴ Whoever eats My flesh and drinks My blood has eternal life, and I will raise him up at the last day. ⁵⁵ For My flesh is truly food, and My blood is truly drink. ⁵⁶ Whoever eats My flesh and drinks My blood remains in Me, and I in him. ⁵⁷ Just as the living Father sent Me and I live because of the Father, so also the one who feeds on Me will live because of Me. ⁵⁸ This is the bread that came down from heaven. Unlike your fathers, who ate the manna and died, the one who eats this bread will live forever.” ⁵⁹ Jesus said this while teaching in the synagogue in Capernaum.

⁶³ The Spirit gives life; the flesh profits nothing. The words I speak to you are spirit and they are life.

⁴ For what was written in the past was written for our instruction, so that through endurance and the encouragement of the Scriptures, we might have hope.

¹⁷ And take the helmet of salvation and the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God.

⁴ The portico at the front, extending across the width of the temple, was twenty cubits long and twenty cubits high. He overlaid the inside with pure gold.

¹ Now the leaders of the people settled in Jerusalem, and the rest of the people cast lots to bring one out of ten to live in the holy city of Jerusalem, while the remaining nine were to dwell in their own towns.

¹⁸ The Levites in the holy city totaled 284.

² who indeed call yourselves after the holy city and lean on the God of Israel; the LORD of Hosts is His name.

¹ Awake, awake, clothe yourself with strength, O Zion! Put on your garments of splendor, O Jerusalem, holy city! For the uncircumcised and unclean will no longer enter you.

¹⁶ O Lord, in keeping with all Your righteous acts, I pray that Your anger and wrath may turn away from Your city Jerusalem, Your holy mountain; for because of our sins and the iniquities of our fathers, Jerusalem and Your people are a reproach to all around us.

²⁴ Seventy weeks are decreed for your people and your holy city to stop their transgression, to put an end to sin, to make atonement for iniquity, to bring in everlasting righteousness, to seal up vision and prophecy, and to anoint the Most Holy Place.

⁵³ After Jesus’ resurrection, when they had come out of the tombs, they entered the holy city and appeared to many people.

¹¹ Jesus answered, “You would have no authority over Me if it were not given to you from above. Therefore the one who handed Me over to you is guilty of greater sin.”

² But exclude the courtyard outside the temple. Do not measure it, because it has been given over to the nations, and they will trample the holy city for 42 months.

¹⁰ Have You not placed a hedge on every side around him and his household and all that he owns? You have blessed the work of his hands, and his possessions have increased in the land.

²³ For you will have a covenant with the stones of the field, and the wild animals will be at peace with you.

⁷ The angel of the LORD encamps around those who fear Him, and he delivers them.

²⁰ He protects all his bones; not one of them will be broken.

¹¹ For He will command His angels concerning you to guard you in all your ways. ¹² They will lift you up in their hands, so that you will not strike your foot against a stone.

⁴ But Jesus answered, “It is written: ‘Man shall not live on bread alone, but on every word that comes from the mouth of God.’”

⁹ Then the devil led Him to Jerusalem and set Him on the pinnacle of the temple. “If You are the Son of God,” he said, “throw Yourself down from here. ¹⁰ For it is written: ‘He will command His angels concerning You to guard You carefully; ¹¹ and they will lift You up in their hands, so that You will not strike Your foot against a stone.’” ¹² But Jesus answered, “It also says, ‘Do not put the Lord your God to the test.’”

¹⁴ And no wonder, for Satan himself masquerades as an angel of light.

¹⁴ Are not the angels ministering spirits sent to serve those who will inherit salvation?

² So the people contended with Moses, “Give us water to drink.” “Why do you contend with me?” Moses replied. “Why do you test the LORD?”

⁷ He named the place Massah and Meribah because the Israelites quarreled, and because they tested the LORD, saying, “Is the LORD among us or not?”

²² not one of the men who have seen My glory and the signs I performed in Egypt and in the wilderness—yet have tested Me and disobeyed Me these ten times—

¹⁶ Do not test the LORD your God as you tested Him at Massah.

¹⁸ They willfully tested God by demanding the food they craved.

⁴¹ Again and again they tested God and provoked the Holy One of Israel.

⁵⁶ But they tested and disobeyed God Most High, for they did not keep His decrees.

⁹ where your fathers tested and tried Me, though they had seen My work.

¹⁴ They craved intensely in the wilderness and tested God in the desert.

²⁰ To the law and to the testimony! If they do not speak according to this word, they have no light of dawn.

¹⁵ So now we call the arrogant blessed. Not only do evildoers prosper, they even test God and escape.’”

¹⁶ “Do You hear what these children are saying?” they asked. “Yes,” Jesus answered. “Have you never read: ‘From the mouths of children and infants You have ordained praise’?”

⁴² Jesus said to them, “Have you never read in the Scriptures: ‘The stone the builders rejected has become the cornerstone. This is from the Lord, and it is marvelous in our eyes’?

³¹ But concerning the resurrection of the dead, have you not read what God said to you: ³² ‘I am the God of Abraham, the God of Isaac, and the God of Jacob’? He is not the God of the dead, but of the living.”

⁹ “How could you agree to test the Spirit of the Lord?” Peter replied. “Look, the feet of the men who buried your husband are at the door, and they will carry you out also.”

⁹ We should not test Christ, as some of them also did, and were killed by snakes.

⁹ where your fathers tested and tried Me, and for forty years saw My works.

⁴ And for a full 180 days he displayed the glorious riches of his kingdom and the magnificent splendor of his greatness.

¹¹ Haman recounted to them his glorious wealth, his many sons, and all the ways the king had honored and promoted him over the other officials and servants.

¹⁶ Do not be amazed when a man grows rich, when the splendor of his house increases. ¹⁷ For when he dies, he will carry nothing away; his abundance will not follow him down.

³⁰ the king exclaimed, “Is this not Babylon the Great, which I myself have built by the might of my power as a royal residence and for the glory of my majesty?”

⁵ Then the devil took Him to the holy city and set Him on the pinnacle of the temple.

²⁶ What does it profit a man if he gains the whole world, yet forfeits his soul? Or what can a man give in exchange for his soul?

⁵ Then the devil led Him up to a high mountain and showed Him in an instant all the kingdoms of the world. ⁶ “I will give You authority over all these kingdoms and all their glory,” he said. “For it has been relinquished to me, and I can give it to anyone I wish. ⁷ So if You worship me, it will all be Yours.”

²⁴ By faith Moses, when he was grown, refused to be called the son of Pharaoh’s daughter. ²⁵ He chose to suffer oppression with God’s people rather than to experience the fleeting enjoyment of sin. ²⁶ He valued disgrace for Christ above the treasures of Egypt, for he was looking ahead to his reward.

²⁴ For, “All flesh is like grass, and all the glory of man like the flowers of the field; the grass withers and the flowers fall,

¹⁵ Do not love the world or anything in the world. If anyone loves the world, the love of the Father is not in him. ¹⁶ For all that is in the world—the desires of the flesh, the desires of the eyes, and the pride of life—is not from the Father but from the world.

¹⁵ Then the seventh angel sounded his trumpet, and loud voices called out in heaven: “The kingdom of the world has become the kingdom of our Lord and of His Christ, and He will reign forever and ever.”

⁷ The LORD sends poverty and wealth; He humbles and He exalts. ⁸ He raises the poor from the dust and lifts the needy from the ash heap. He seats them among princes and bestows on them a throne of honor. For the foundations of the earth are the LORD’s, and upon them He has set the world.

¹¹ May all kings bow down to him and all nations serve him.

⁷ He raises the poor from the dust and lifts the needy from the dump ⁸ to seat them with nobles, with the princes of His people.

¹⁵ By me kings reign, and rulers enact just laws;

⁵ By My great power and outstretched arm, I made the earth and the men and beasts on the face of it, and I give it to whom I please. ⁶ So now I have placed all these lands under the authority of My servant Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon. I have even made the beasts of the field subject to him.

³⁷ You, O king, are the king of kings, to whom the God of heaven has given sovereignty, power, strength, and glory. ³⁸ Wherever the sons of men or beasts of the field or birds of the air dwell, He has given them into your hand and has made you ruler over them all. You are that head of gold.

³² You will be driven away from mankind to live with the beasts of the field, and you will feed on grass like an ox. And seven times will pass you by, until you acknowledge that the Most High rules over the kingdom of mankind and gives it to whom He wishes.”

¹⁸ As for you, O king, the Most High God gave your father Nebuchadnezzar sovereignty and greatness, glory and honor. ¹⁹ Because of the greatness that He bestowed on him, the people of every nation and language trembled in fear before him. He killed whom he wished and kept alive whom he wished; he exalted whom he wished and humbled whom he wished.

²⁶ And this is the interpretation of the message: MENE means that God has numbered the days of your reign and brought it to an end. ²⁷ TEKEL means that you have been weighed on the scales and found deficient. ²⁸ PERES means that your kingdom has been divided and given over to the Medes and Persians.”

¹⁵ and asked, “What are you willing to give me if I hand Him over to you?” And they set out for him thirty pieces of silver.

³¹ Now judgment is upon this world; now the prince of this world will be cast out.

³ Jesus knew that the Father had delivered all things into His hands, and that He had come from God and was returning to God.

¹¹ and in regard to judgment, because the prince of this world has been condemned.

²⁰ No, but the sacrifices of pagans are offered to demons, not to God. And I do not want you to be participants with demons. ²¹ You cannot drink the cup of the Lord and the cup of demons too; you cannot partake in the table of the Lord and the table of demons too.

⁴ The god of this age has blinded the minds of unbelievers so they cannot see the light of the gospel of the glory of Christ, who is the image of God.

⁶ He must not be a recent convert, or he may become conceited and fall under the same condemnation as the devil.

¹⁰ So I fell at his feet to worship him. But he told me, “Do not do that! I am a fellow servant with you and your brothers who rely on the testimony of Jesus. Worship God! For the testimony of Jesus is the spirit of prophecy.”

¹⁶ And He has a name written on His robe and on His thigh: KING OF KINGS AND LORD OF LORDS.

⁸ And I am John, who heard and saw these things. And when I had heard and seen them, I fell down to worship at the feet of the angel who had shown me these things. ⁹ But he said to me, “Do not do that! I am a fellow servant with you and your brothers the prophets, and with those who keep the words of this book. Worship God!”

¹³ Fear the LORD your God, serve Him only, and take your oaths in His name. ¹⁴ Do not follow other gods, the gods of the peoples around you.

²⁰ You are to fear the LORD your God and serve Him. Hold fast to Him and take your oaths in His name.

¹⁴ Now, therefore, fear the LORD and serve Him in sincerity and truth; cast aside the gods your fathers served beyond the Euphrates and in Egypt, and serve the LORD.

³ Then Samuel said to all the house of Israel, “If you are returning to the LORD with all your hearts, then rid yourselves of the foreign gods and Ashtoreths among you, prepare your hearts for the LORD, and serve Him only. And He will deliver you from the hand of the Philistines.”

¹ Then Satan rose up against Israel and incited David to take a census of Israel.

⁶ One day the sons of God came to present themselves before the LORD, and Satan also came with them.

¹² “Very well,” said the LORD to Satan. “Everything he has is in your hands, but you must not lay a hand on the man himself.” Then Satan went out from the presence of the LORD.

⁶ Set over him a wicked man; let an accuser stand at his right hand.

¹ Then the angel showed me Joshua the high priest standing before the angel of the LORD, with Satan standing at his right hand to accuse him. ² And the LORD said to Satan: “The LORD rebukes you, Satan! Indeed, the LORD, who has chosen Jerusalem, rebukes you! Is not this man a firebrand snatched from the fire?”

²³ But Jesus turned and said to Peter, “Get behind Me, Satan! You are a stumbling block to Me. For you do not have in mind the things of God, but the things of men.”

⁷ Submit yourselves, then, to God. Resist the devil, and he will flee from you.

⁹ Resist him, standing firm in your faith and in the knowledge that your brothers throughout the world are undergoing the same kinds of suffering.

⁶ “If You are the Son of God,” he said, “throw Yourself down. For it is written: ‘He will command His angels concerning You, and they will lift You up in their hands, so that You will not strike Your foot against a stone.’”

⁵³ Are you not aware that I can call on My Father right now, and He will at once put at My disposal more than twelve legions of angels?

² Suddenly there was a great earthquake, for an angel of the Lord descended from heaven, rolled away the stone from the entrance, and sat on it. ³ His appearance was like lightning, and his clothes were white as snow. ⁴ The guards trembled in fear of him and became like dead men. ⁵ But the angel said to the women, “Do not be afraid, for I know that you are looking for Jesus, who was crucified.

¹³ and He was there for forty days, being tempted by Satan. He was with the wild animals, and the angels ministered to Him.

¹³ When the devil had finished every temptation, he left Him until an opportune time.

⁴³ Then an angel from heaven appeared to Him and strengthened Him.

⁵³ Every day I was with you in the temple courts, and you did not lay a hand on Me. But this hour belongs to you and to the power of darkness.”

¹⁶ By common confession, the mystery of godliness is great: God appeared in the flesh, was vindicated by the Spirit, was seen by angels, was proclaimed among the nations, was believed in throughout the world, was taken up in glory.

⁶ And again, when God brings His firstborn into the world, He says: “Let all God’s angels worship Him.”

¹¹ Then I looked, and I heard the voices of many angels and living creatures and elders encircling the throne, and their number was myriads of myriads and thousands of thousands. ¹² In a loud voice they were saying: “Worthy is the Lamb, who was slain, to receive power and riches and wisdom and strength and honor and glory and blessing!”

³ Now Herod had arrested John and bound him and put him in prison on account of Herodias, his brother Philip’s wife,

¹⁴ After the arrest of John, Jesus went into Galilee and proclaimed the gospel of the kingdom of God.

¹⁷ For Herod himself had ordered that John be arrested and bound and imprisoned, on account of his brother Philip’s wife Herodias, whom Herod had married.

²⁰ Herod added this to them all: He locked John up in prison.

¹⁴ Jesus returned to Galilee in the power of the Spirit, and the news about Him spread throughout the surrounding region.

³¹ Then He went down to Capernaum, a town in Galilee, and on the Sabbath He began to teach the people.

²⁴ (For John had not yet been thrown into prison.)

⁴³ After two days, Jesus left for Galilee.

⁵⁴ This was now the second sign that Jesus performed after coming from Judea into Galilee.

¹⁰ The third lot came up for the clans of the tribe of Zebulun: The border of their inheritance stretched as far as Sarid. ¹¹ It went up westward to Maralah, reached Dabbesheth, and met the brook east of Jokneam. ¹² From Sarid it turned eastward along the border of Chisloth-tabor and went on to Daberath and up to Japhia. ¹³ From there it crossed eastward to Gath-hepher and to Eth-kazin; it extended to Rimmon and curved around toward Neah. ¹⁴ Then the border circled around the north side of Neah to Hannathon and ended at the Valley of Iphtah-el. ¹⁵ It also included Kattath, Nahalal, Shimron, Idalah, and Bethlehem. There were twelve cities, along with their villages. ¹⁶ This was the inheritance of the clans of the tribe of Zebulun, including these cities and their villages.

³² The sixth lot came out for the clans of the tribe of Naphtali: ³³ Their border started at Heleph and the great tree of Zaanannim, passing Adami-nekeb and Jabneel as far as Lakkum and ending at the Jordan. ³⁴ Then the border turned westward to Aznoth-tabor and ran from there to Hukkok, touching Zebulun on the south side, Asher on the west, and Judah at the Jordan on the east. ³⁵ The fortified cities were Ziddim, Zer, Hammath, Rakkath, Chinnereth, ³⁶ Adamah, Ramah, Hazor, ³⁷ Kedesh, Edrei, En-hazor, ³⁸ Iron, Migdal-el, Horem, Beth-anath, and Beth-shemesh. There were nineteen cities, along with their villages. ³⁹ This was the inheritance of the clans of the tribe of Naphtali, including these cities and their villages.

²³ And you, Capernaum, which is lifted up to heaven, will be brought down to Hades! For if the miracles that were performed in you had been performed in Sodom, it would have remained to this day.

²⁴ After they had arrived in Capernaum, the collectors of the two-drachma tax came to Peter and asked, “Does your Teacher pay the two drachmas?”

²¹ Then Jesus and His companions went to Capernaum, and right away Jesus entered the synagogue on the Sabbath and began to teach.

²³ Jesus said to them, “Surely you will quote this proverb to Me: ‘Physician, heal yourself! Do here in Your hometown what we have heard that You did in Capernaum.’”

³⁰ But Jesus passed through the crowd and went on His way. ³¹ Then He went down to Capernaum, a town in Galilee, and on the Sabbath He began to teach the people.

¹² After this, He went down to Capernaum with His mother and brothers and His disciples, and they stayed there a few days.

⁴⁶ So once again Jesus came to Cana in Galilee, where He had turned the water into wine. And there was a royal official whose son lay sick at Capernaum.

¹⁷ got into a boat, and started across the sea to Capernaum. It was already dark, and Jesus had not gone out to them.

²⁴ So when the crowd saw that neither Jesus nor His disciples were there, they got into the boats and went to Capernaum to look for Him.

⁵⁹ Jesus said this while teaching in the synagogue in Capernaum.

¹ Nevertheless, there will be no more gloom for those in distress. In the past He humbled the land of Zebulun and the land of Naphtali, but in the future He will honor the Way of the Sea, beyond the Jordan, Galilee of the nations: ² The people walking in darkness have seen a great light; on those living in the land of the shadow of death, a light has dawned.

²² All this took place to fulfill what the Lord had said through the prophet:

¹⁵ where he stayed until the death of Herod. This fulfilled what the Lord had spoken through the prophet: “Out of Egypt I called My Son.”

²³ and he went and lived in a town called Nazareth. So was fulfilled what was spoken through the prophets: “He will be called a Nazarene.”

¹⁷ This was to fulfill what was spoken through the prophet Isaiah: “He took on our infirmities and carried our diseases.”

¹⁷ This was to fulfill what was spoken through the prophet Isaiah: ¹⁸ “Here is My Servant, whom I have chosen, My beloved, in whom My soul delights. I will put My Spirit on Him, and He will proclaim justice to the nations. ¹⁹ He will not quarrel or cry out; no one will hear His voice in the streets. ²⁰ A bruised reed He will not break, and a smoldering wick He will not extinguish, till He leads justice to victory. ²¹ In His name the nations will put their hope.”

⁵⁴ But how then would the Scriptures be fulfilled that say it must happen this way?”

⁵⁶ But this has all happened so that the writings of the prophets would be fulfilled.” Then all the disciples deserted Him and fled.

³⁷ For I tell you that this Scripture must yet be fulfilled in Me: ‘And He was numbered with the transgressors.’ For what is written about Me is reaching its fulfillment.”

⁴⁴ Jesus said to them, “These are the words I spoke to you while I was still with you: Everything must be fulfilled that is written about Me in the Law of Moses, the Prophets, and the Psalms.”

²⁵ But this is to fulfill what is written in their Law: ‘They hated Me without reason.’

²⁸ After this, knowing that everything had now been accomplished, and to fulfill the Scripture, Jesus said, “I am thirsty.”

³⁶ Now these things happened so that the Scripture would be fulfilled: “Not one of His bones will be broken.” ³⁷ And, as another Scripture says: “They will look on the One they have pierced.”

⁷ So they set apart Kedesh in Galilee in the hill country of Naphtali, Shechem in the hill country of Ephraim, and Kiriath-arba (that is, Hebron) in the hill country of Judah.

³² And from the tribe of Naphtali they were given Kedesh in Galilee (a city of refuge for the manslayer), Hammoth-dor, and Kartan—three cities, together with their pasturelands.

¹¹ King Solomon gave twenty towns in the land of Galilee to Hiram king of Tyre, who had supplied him with cedar and cypress logs and gold for his every desire.

²⁹ In the days of Pekah king of Israel, Tiglath-pileser king of Assyria came and captured Ijon, Abel-beth-maacah, Janoah, Kedesh, Hazor, Gilead, and Galilee, including all the land of Naphtali, and he took the people as captives to Assyria.

¹ Nevertheless, there will be no more gloom for those in distress. In the past He humbled the land of Zebulun and the land of Naphtali, but in the future He will honor the Way of the Sea, beyond the Jordan, Galilee of the nations:

⁵ May darkness and gloom reclaim it, and a cloud settle over it; may the blackness of the day overwhelm it.

²² to a land of utter darkness, of deep shadow and disorder, where even the light is like darkness.”

²² There is no darkness or deep shadow where the workers of iniquity can hide.

¹⁹ But You have crushed us in the lair of jackals; You have covered us with deepest darkness.

¹⁰ Some sat in darkness and in the shadow of death, prisoners in affliction and chains, ¹¹ because they rebelled against the words of God and despised the counsel of the Most High. ¹² He humbled their hearts with hard labor; they stumbled, and there was no one to help. ¹³ Then they cried out to the LORD in their trouble, and He saved them from their distress. ¹⁴ He brought them out of darkness and the shadow of death and broke away their chains.

² The people walking in darkness have seen a great light; on those living in the land of the shadow of death, a light has dawned.

⁶ “I, the LORD, have called you for a righteous purpose, and I will take hold of your hand. I will keep you and appoint you to be a covenant for the people and a light to the nations, ⁷ to open the eyes of the blind, to bring prisoners out of the dungeon and those sitting in darkness out from the prison house.

¹ Arise, shine, for your light has come, and the glory of the LORD rises upon you. ² For behold, darkness covers the earth, and thick darkness is over the peoples; but the LORD will rise upon you, and His glory will appear over you. ³ Nations will come to your light, and kings to the brightness of your dawn.

¹⁶ Give glory to the LORD your God before He brings darkness, before your feet stumble on the dusky mountains. You wait for light, but He turns it into deep gloom and thick darkness.

⁸ He who made the Pleiades and Orion, who turns darkness into dawn and darkens day into night, who summons the waters of the sea and pours them over the face of the earth—the LORD is His name—

⁸ Do not gloat over me, my enemy! Though I have fallen, I will arise; though I sit in darkness, the LORD will be my light.

⁷⁸ because of the tender mercy of our God, by which the Dawn has visited us from on high, ⁷⁹ to shine on those who live in darkness and in the shadow of death, to guide our feet into the path of peace.”

³² a light for revelation to the Gentiles, and for glory to Your people Israel.”

² and saying, “Repent, for the kingdom of heaven is near.”

¹³ But go and learn what this means: ‘I desire mercy, not sacrifice.’ For I have not come to call the righteous, but sinners, to repentance.”

⁷ As you go, preach this message: ‘The kingdom of heaven is near.’

¹² From the days of John the Baptist until now, the kingdom of heaven has been subject to violence, and the violent lay claim to it.

⁹ He who has ears to hear, let him hear.”

¹¹ He replied, “The knowledge of the mysteries of the kingdom of heaven has been given to you, but not to them.

²⁴ Jesus put before them another parable: “The kingdom of heaven is like a man who sowed good seed in his field.

⁴⁷ Once again, the kingdom of heaven is like a net that was cast into the sea and caught all kinds of fish.

¹ “At that time the kingdom of heaven will be like ten virgins who took their lamps and went out to meet the bridegroom.

³² I have not come to call the righteous, but sinners, to repentance.”

² And He sent them out to proclaim the kingdom of God and to heal the sick.

¹¹ ‘Even the dust of your town that clings to us, we wipe off as a testimony against you. Yet be sure of this: The kingdom of God is near to you.’ ¹² I tell you, it will be more bearable on that day for Sodom than for that town. ¹³ Woe to you, Chorazin! Woe to you, Bethsaida! For if the miracles that were performed in you had been performed in Tyre and Sidon, they would have repented long ago, sitting in sackcloth and ashes. ¹⁴ But it will be more bearable for Tyre and Sidon at the judgment than for you.

⁷ In the same way, I tell you that there will be more joy in heaven over one sinner who repents than over ninety-nine righteous ones who do not need to repent.

¹⁰ In the same way, I tell you, there is joy in the presence of God’s angels over one sinner who repents.”

⁴⁷ and in His name repentance and forgiveness of sins will be proclaimed to all nations, beginning in Jerusalem.

³⁸ Peter replied, “Repent and be baptized, every one of you, in the name of Jesus Christ for the forgiveness of sins, and you will receive the gift of the Holy Spirit.

¹⁹ Repent, then, and turn back, so that your sins may be wiped away,

¹⁸ When they heard this, their objections were put to rest, and they glorified God, saying, “So then, God has granted even the Gentiles repentance unto life.”

³⁰ Although God overlooked the ignorance of earlier times, He now commands all people everywhere to repent.

²¹ testifying to Jews and Greeks alike about repentance to God and faith in our Lord Jesus.

²⁰ First to those in Damascus and Jerusalem, then to everyone throughout the region of Judea, and then to the Gentiles, I declared that they should repent and turn to God, performing deeds worthy of their repentance.

²⁵ He must gently reprove those who oppose him, in the hope that God may grant them repentance leading to a knowledge of the truth. ²⁶ Then they will come to their senses and escape the snare of the devil, who has taken them captive to his will.

¹ Therefore let us leave the elementary teachings about Christ and go on to maturity, not laying again the foundation of repentance from dead works, and of faith in God,

¹ Meanwhile, Moses was shepherding the flock of his father-in-law Jethro, the priest of Midian. He led the flock to the far side of the wilderness and came to Horeb, the mountain of God.

¹⁰ Therefore, go! I am sending you to Pharaoh to bring My people the Israelites out of Egypt.”

¹¹ then go down from Shepham to Riblah on the east side of Ain and continue along the slopes east of the Sea of Chinnereth.

¹⁷ The Jordan River in the Arabah bordered it from Chinnereth to the Sea of the Arabah (the Salt Sea) with the slopes of Pisgah to the east.

¹¹ Then the angel of the LORD came and sat down under the oak in Ophrah that belonged to Joash the Abiezrite, where his son Gideon was threshing wheat in a winepress to hide it from the Midianites. ¹² And the angel of the LORD appeared to Gideon and said, “The LORD is with you, O mighty man of valor.”

¹⁹ So Elijah departed and found Elisha son of Shaphat. He was plowing with twelve teams of oxen, and he was with the twelfth team. Elijah passed by him and threw his cloak around him. ²⁰ So Elisha left the oxen, ran after Elijah, and said, “Please let me kiss my father and mother goodbye, and then I will follow you.” “Go on back,” Elijah replied, “for what have I done to you?” ²¹ So Elisha turned back from him, took his pair of oxen, and slaughtered them. With the oxen’s equipment, he cooked the meat and gave it to the people, and they ate. Then he set out to follow and serve Elijah.

⁷⁰ He chose David His servant and took him from the sheepfolds; ⁷¹ from tending the ewes He brought him to be shepherd of His people Jacob, of Israel His inheritance. ⁷² So David shepherded them with integrity of heart and guided them with skillful hands.

¹⁴ “I was not a prophet,” Amos replied, “nor was I the son of a prophet; rather, I was a herdsman and a tender of sycamore-fig trees. ¹⁵ But the LORD took me from following the flock and said to me, ‘Go, prophesy to My people Israel.’

¹⁶ and Jacob the father of Joseph, the husband of Mary, of whom was born Jesus, who is called Christ. ¹⁷ In all, then, there were fourteen generations from Abraham to David, fourteen from David to the exile to Babylon, and fourteen from the exile to the Christ. ¹⁸ This is how the birth of Jesus Christ came about: His mother Mary was pledged in marriage to Joseph, but before they came together, she was found to be with child through the Holy Spirit.

² These are the names of the twelve apostles: first Simon, called Peter, and his brother Andrew; James son of Zebedee, and his brother John;

²⁹ Moving on from there, Jesus went along the Sea of Galilee. Then He went up on a mountain and sat down.

¹⁸ And I tell you that you are Peter, and on this rock I will build My church, and the gates of Hades will not prevail against it.

¹⁶ As Jesus was walking beside the Sea of Galilee, He saw Simon and his brother Andrew. They were casting a net into the sea, for they were fishermen. ¹⁷ “Come, follow Me,” Jesus said, “and I will make you fishers of men.” ¹⁸ And at once they left their nets and followed Him. ¹⁹ Going on a little farther from there, He saw James son of Zebedee and his brother John. They were in a boat, mending their nets. ²⁰ Immediately Jesus called them, and they left their father Zebedee in the boat with the hired men and followed Him.

³¹ Then Jesus left the region of Tyre and Sidon and went toward the Sea of Galilee and into the region of the Decapolis.

¹ On one occasion, while Jesus was standing by the Lake of Gennesaret with the crowd pressing in on Him to hear the word of God, ² He saw two boats at the edge of the lake. The fishermen had left them and were washing their nets. ³ Jesus got into the boat belonging to Simon and asked him to put out a little from shore. And sitting down, He taught the people from the boat. ⁴ When Jesus had finished speaking, He said to Simon, “Put out into deep water and let down your nets for a catch.” ⁵ “Master,” Simon replied, “we have worked hard all night without catching anything. But because You say so, I will let down the net.” ⁶ When they had done so, they caught such a large number of fish that their net began to tear. ⁷ So they signaled to their partners in the other boat to come and help them, and they came and filled both boats so full that they began to sink. ⁸ When Simon Peter saw this, he fell at Jesus’ knees. “Go away from me, Lord,” he said, “for I am a sinful man.” ⁹ For he and his companions were astonished at the catch of fish they had taken, ¹⁰ and so were his partners James and John, the sons of Zebedee. “Do not be afraid,” Jesus said to Simon. “From now on you will catch men.” ¹¹ And when they had brought their boats ashore, they left everything and followed Him.

¹⁴ Simon, whom He named Peter, and his brother Andrew; James and John; Philip and Bartholomew;

⁴⁰ Andrew, Simon Peter’s brother, was one of the two who heard John’s testimony and followed Jesus. ⁴¹ He first found his brother Simon and told him, “We have found the Messiah” (which is translated as Christ). ⁴² Andrew brought him to Jesus, who looked at him and said, “You are Simon son of Jonah. You will be called Cephas” (which is translated as Peter).

¹ After this, Jesus crossed to the other side of the Sea of Galilee (that is, the Sea of Tiberias).

⁸ One of His disciples, Andrew, Simon Peter’s brother, said to Him,

¹ Later, by the Sea of Tiberias, Jesus again revealed Himself to the disciples. He made Himself known in this way:

²⁷ But God chose the foolish things of the world to shame the wise; God chose the weak things of the world to shame the strong. ²⁸ He chose the lowly and despised things of the world, and the things that are not, to nullify the things that are, ²⁹ so that no one may boast in His presence.

⁹ Wherever the river flows, there will be swarms of living creatures and a great number of fish, because it flows there and makes the waters fresh; so wherever the river flows, everything will flourish. ¹⁰ Fishermen will stand by the shore; from En-gedi to En-eglaim they will spread their nets to catch fish of many kinds, like the fish of the Great Sea.

²² But Jesus told him, “Follow Me, and let the dead bury their own dead.”

⁹ As Jesus went on from there, He saw a man named Matthew sitting at the tax booth. “Follow Me,” He told him, and Matthew got up and followed Him.

²⁴ Then Jesus told His disciples, “If anyone wants to come after Me, he must deny himself and take up his cross and follow Me.

²¹ Jesus told him, “If you want to be perfect, go, sell your possessions and give to the poor, and you will have treasure in heaven. Then come, follow Me.”

¹⁷ “Come, follow Me,” Jesus said, “and I will make you fishers of men.” ¹⁸ And at once they left their nets and followed Him.

¹⁴ As He was walking along, He saw Levi son of Alphaeus sitting at the tax booth. “Follow Me,” He told him, and Levi got up and followed Him.

²⁷ After this, Jesus went out and saw a tax collector named Levi sitting at the tax booth. “Follow Me,” He told him,

⁵⁹ Then He said to another man, “Follow Me.” The man replied, “Lord, first let me go and bury my father.”

⁴³ The next day Jesus decided to set out for Galilee. Finding Philip, He told him, “Follow Me.”

²⁶ If anyone serves Me, he must follow Me; and where I am, My servant will be as well. If anyone serves Me, the Father will honor him.

²² Jesus answered, “If I want him to remain until I return, what is that to you? You follow Me!”

²⁰ To the Jews I became like a Jew, to win the Jews. To those under the law I became like one under the law, to win those under the law. ²¹ To those without the law I became like one without the law (though I am not outside the law of God but am under the law of Christ), to win those without the law. ²² To the weak I became like one who is weak, to win the weak. I have become all things to all people so that by all possible means I might save some.

¹⁶ Be that as it may, I was not a burden to you; but crafty as I am, I caught you by trickery.

²¹ So Elisha turned back from him, took his pair of oxen, and slaughtered them. With the oxen’s equipment, he cooked the meat and gave it to the people, and they ate. Then he set out to follow and serve Elijah.

⁶⁰ I hurried without hesitating to keep Your commandments.

³⁷ Anyone who loves his father or mother more than Me is not worthy of Me; anyone who loves his son or daughter more than Me is not worthy of Me;

²⁷ “Look,” Peter replied, “we have left everything to follow You. What then will there be for us?”

²⁸ Peter began to say to Him, “Look, we have left everything and followed You.” ²⁹ “Truly I tell you,” Jesus replied, “no one who has left home or brothers or sisters or mother or father or wife or children or fields for My sake and for the gospel ³⁰ will fail to receive a hundredfold in the present age—houses and brothers and sisters and mothers and children and fields, along with persecutions—and in the age to come, eternal life. ³¹ But many who are first will be last, and the last will be first.”

²⁸ “Look,” said Peter, “we have left all we had to follow You.” ²⁹ “Truly I tell you,” Jesus replied, “no one who has left home or wife or brothers or parents or children for the sake of the kingdom of God ³⁰ will fail to receive many times more in this age—and in the age to come, eternal life.”

¹⁶ to reveal His Son in me so that I might preach Him among the Gentiles, I did not rush to consult with flesh and blood,

¹ After six days Jesus took with Him Peter, James, and John the brother of James, and led them up a high mountain by themselves.

²⁰ Then the mother of Zebedee’s sons came to Jesus with her sons and knelt down to make a request of Him. ²¹ “What do you want?” He inquired. She answered, “Declare that in Your kingdom one of these two sons of mine may sit at Your right hand, and the other at Your left.”

³⁷ He took with Him Peter and the two sons of Zebedee and began to be sorrowful and deeply distressed.

¹⁷ James son of Zebedee and his brother John (whom He named Boanerges, meaning “Sons of Thunder”),

³⁷ And He did not allow anyone to accompany Him except Peter, James, and John the brother of James.

² Simon Peter, Thomas called Didymus, Nathanael from Cana in Galilee, the sons of Zebedee, and two other disciples were together.

² He had James, the brother of John, put to death with the sword.

⁹ He said of his father and mother, ‘I do not consider them.’ He disregarded his brothers and did not know his own sons, for he kept Your word and maintained Your covenant. ¹⁰ He will teach Your ordinances to Jacob and Your law to Israel; he will set incense before You and whole burnt offerings on Your altar.

²⁰ Immediately Jesus called them, and they left their father Zebedee in the boat with the hired men and followed Him.

⁵⁹ Then He said to another man, “Follow Me.” The man replied, “Lord, first let me go and bury my father.” ⁶⁰ But Jesus told him, “Let the dead bury their own dead. You, however, go and proclaim the kingdom of God.”

²⁶ “If anyone comes to Me and does not hate his father and mother and wife and children and brothers and sisters—yes, even his own life—he cannot be My disciple.

³³ In the same way, any one of you who does not give up everything he has cannot be My disciple.

¹⁶ So from now on we regard no one according to the flesh. Although we once regarded Christ in this way, we do so no longer.

⁸ They said in their hearts, “We will crush them completely.” They burned down every place where God met us in the land.

³ He who forgives all your iniquities and heals all your diseases,

¹⁶ When evening came, many who were demon-possessed were brought to Jesus, and He drove out the spirits with a word and healed all the sick. ¹⁷ This was to fulfill what was spoken through the prophet Isaiah: “He took on our infirmities and carried our diseases.”

³⁵ Jesus went through all the towns and villages, teaching in their synagogues, preaching the gospel of the kingdom, and healing every disease and sickness among the people.

⁷ As you go, preach this message: ‘The kingdom of heaven is near.’ ⁸ Heal the sick, cleanse the lepers, drive out demons. Freely you have received; freely give.

⁵ The blind receive sight, the lame walk, the lepers are cleansed, the deaf hear, the dead are raised, and the good news is preached to the poor.

⁹ Moving on from there, Jesus entered their synagogue,

¹⁹ When anyone hears the message of the kingdom but does not understand it, the evil one comes and snatches away what was sown in his heart. This is the seed sown along the path.

⁵⁴ Coming to His hometown, He taught the people in their synagogue, and they were astonished. “Where did this man get such wisdom and miraculous powers?” they asked.

¹⁴ When Jesus stepped ashore and saw a large crowd, He had compassion on them and healed their sick.

³⁰ Large crowds came to Him, bringing the lame, the blind, the mute, the crippled, and many others, and laid them at Jesus' feet, and He healed them. ³¹ The crowds were amazed when they saw the mute speaking, the crippled restored, the lame walking, and the blind seeing. And they glorified the God of Israel.

¹⁴ And this gospel of the kingdom will be preached in all the world as a testimony to all nations, and then the end will come.

³² That evening, after sunset, people brought to Jesus all who were sick and demon-possessed, ³³ and the whole town gathered at the door. ³⁴ And He healed many who were ill with various diseases and drove out many demons. But He would not allow the demons to speak, because they knew who He was.

³⁹ So He went throughout Galilee, preaching in their synagogues and driving out demons.

¹⁰ For He had healed so many that all who had diseases were pressing forward to touch Him.

² When the Sabbath came, He began to teach in the synagogue, and many who heard Him were astonished. “Where did this man get these ideas?” they asked. “What is this wisdom He has been given? And how can He perform such miracles?

⁶ And He was amazed at their unbelief. And He went around from village to village, teaching the people.

¹⁵ He taught in their synagogues and was glorified by everyone. ¹⁶ Then Jesus came to Nazareth, where He had been brought up. As was His custom, He entered the synagogue on the Sabbath. And when He stood up to read, ¹⁷ the scroll of Isaiah the prophet was handed to Him. Unrolling it, He found the place where it was written: ¹⁸ “The Spirit of the Lord is on Me, because He has anointed Me to preach good news to the poor. He has sent Me to heal the brokenhearted, to proclaim liberty to the captives and recovery of sight to the blind, to release the oppressed,

⁴⁰ At sunset, all who were ill with various diseases were brought to Jesus, and laying His hands on each one, He healed them. ⁴¹ Demons also came out of many people, crying out, “You are the Christ, the Son of God!” But He rebuked the demons and would not allow them to speak, because they knew He was the Christ.

⁴³ But Jesus told them, “I must preach the good news of the kingdom of God to the other towns as well, because that is why I was sent.” ⁴⁴ And He continued to preach in the synagogues of Galilee.

¹⁷ One day Jesus was teaching, and the Pharisees and teachers of the law were sitting there. People had come from Jerusalem and from every village of Galilee and Judea, and the power of the Lord was present for Him to heal the sick.

¹⁷ Then Jesus came down with them and stood on a level place. A crowd of His disciples was there, along with a great number of people from all over Judea, Jerusalem, and the sea coast of Tyre and Sidon.

²² So Jesus replied, “Go back and report to John what you have seen and heard: The blind receive sight, the lame walk, the lepers are cleansed, the deaf hear, the dead are raised, and the good news is preached to the poor.

¹ Soon afterward, Jesus traveled from one town and village to another, preaching and proclaiming the good news of the kingdom of God. The Twelve were with Him,

¹¹ But the crowds found out and followed Him. He welcomed them and spoke to them about the kingdom of God, and He healed those who needed healing.

⁹ Heal the sick who are there and tell them, ‘The kingdom of God is near you.’

¹⁰ One Sabbath Jesus was teaching in one of the synagogues,

¹ One day as Jesus was teaching the people in the temple courts and proclaiming the gospel, the priests and scribes, together with the elders, came up to Him.

¹ After this, Jesus traveled throughout Galilee. He did not want to travel in Judea, because the Jews there were trying to kill Him.

²⁰ “I have spoken openly to the world,” Jesus answered. “I always taught in the synagogues and at the temple, where the Jews always come together. I said nothing in secret.

¹⁵ As a result, people brought the sick into the streets and laid them on cots and mats, so that at least Peter’s shadow might fall on some of them as he passed by. ¹⁶ Crowds also gathered from the towns around Jerusalem, bringing the sick and those tormented by unclean spirits, and all of them were healed.

¹³ But Ananias answered, “Lord, many people have told me about this man and all the harm he has done to Your saints in Jerusalem. ¹⁴ And now he is here with authority from the chief priests to arrest all who call on Your name.” ¹⁵ “Go!” said the Lord. “This man is My chosen instrument to carry My name before the Gentiles and their kings, and before the people of Israel. ¹⁶ I will show him how much he must suffer for My name.” ¹⁷ So Ananias went to the house, and when he arrived, he placed his hands on Saul. “Brother Saul,” he said, “the Lord, who appeared to you on the road as you were coming here, has sent me so that you may see again and be filled with the Holy Spirit.” ¹⁸ At that instant, something like scales fell from Saul’s eyes, and his sight was restored. He got up and was baptized, ¹⁹ and after taking some food, he regained his strength. And Saul spent several days with the disciples in Damascus. ²⁰ Saul promptly began to proclaim Christ in the synagogues, declaring, “He is the Son of God.” ²¹ All who heard him were astounded and asked, “Isn’t this the man who wreaked havoc in Jerusalem on those who call on this name? And hasn’t he come here to take them as prisoners to the chief priests?” ²² But Saul was empowered all the more, and he confounded the Jews living in Damascus by proving that Jesus is the Christ. ²³ After many days had passed, the Jews conspired to kill him, ²⁴ but Saul learned of their plot. Day and night they watched the city gates in order to kill him. ²⁵ One night, however, the disciples took him and lowered him in a basket through a window in the wall. ²⁶ When Saul arrived in Jerusalem, he tried to join the disciples, but they were all afraid of him, not believing that he was a disciple. ²⁷ Then Barnabas brought him to the apostles and described how Saul had seen the Lord, who spoke to him on the road to Damascus, and how Saul had spoken boldly in that city in the name of Jesus. ²⁸ So Saul stayed with them, moving about freely in Jerusalem and speaking boldly in the name of the Lord Jesus. ²⁹ He talked and debated with the Grecian Jews, but they tried to kill him. ³⁰ When the brothers learned of this, they took him down to Caesarea and sent him off to Tarsus. ³¹ Then the church throughout Judea, Galilee, and Samaria experienced a time of peace. It grew in strength and numbers, living in the fear of the Lord and the encouragement of the Holy Spirit. ³² As Peter traveled throughout the area, he went to visit the saints in Lydda. ³³ There he found a man named Aeneas, who had been paralyzed and bedridden for eight years. ³⁴ “Aeneas,” Peter said to him, “Jesus Christ heals you! Get up and put away your mat.” Immediately Aeneas got up, ³⁵ and all who lived in Lydda and Sharon saw him and turned to the Lord. ³⁶ In Joppa there was a disciple named Tabitha (which is translated as Dorcas), who was always occupied with works of kindness and charity. ³⁷ At that time, however, she became sick and died, and her body was washed and placed in an upper room. ³⁸ Since Lydda was near Joppa, the disciples heard that Peter was there and sent to him, urging, “Come to them without delay.” ³⁹ So Peter got up and went with them. On his arrival, they took him to the upper room. All the widows stood around him, weeping and showing him the tunics and other clothing that Dorcas had made while she was still with them. ⁴⁰ Then Peter sent them all out of the room. He knelt down and prayed, and turning toward her body, he said, “Tabitha, get up!” She opened her eyes, and seeing Peter, she sat up. ⁴¹ Peter took her by the hand and helped her up. Then he called the saints and widows and presented her to them alive. ⁴² This became known all over Joppa, and many people believed in the Lord. ⁴³ And Peter stayed for several days in Joppa with a tanner named Simon.

³⁸ how God anointed Jesus of Nazareth with the Holy Spirit and with power, and how Jesus went around doing good and healing all who were oppressed by the devil, because God was with Him.

⁴ Every Sabbath he reasoned in the synagogue, trying to persuade Jews and Greeks alike.

²⁵ Now I know that none of you among whom I have preached the kingdom of God will see my face again.

¹⁵ And how can they preach unless they are sent? As it is written: “How beautiful are the feet of those who bring good news of peace, who bring good news of good things!”

²⁶ saying, “If you will listen carefully to the voice of the LORD your God, and do what is right in His eyes, and pay attention to His commands, and keep all His statutes, then I will not bring on you any of the diseases I inflicted on the Egyptians. For I am the LORD who heals you.”

²⁷ So the LORD was with Joshua, and his fame spread throughout the land.

⁶ Then he placed garrisons in Aram of Damascus, and the Arameans became subject to David and brought him tribute. So the LORD made David victorious wherever he went.

³¹ He was wiser than all men—wiser than Ethan the Ezrahite, and wiser than Heman, Calcol, and Darda, the sons of Mahol. And his fame spread throughout the surrounding nations.

¹ Now when the queen of Sheba heard about the fame of Solomon concerning the name of the LORD, she came to test him with difficult questions.

¹⁷ And David’s fame went out into every land, and the LORD caused all nations to fear him.

²³ Jesus went throughout Galilee, teaching in their synagogues, preaching the gospel of the kingdom, and healing every disease and sickness among the people.

⁶ “Lord, my servant lies at home, paralyzed and in terrible agony.”

¹³ Then Jesus said to the centurion, “Go! As you have believed, so will it be done for you.” And his servant was healed at that very hour. ¹⁴ When Jesus arrived at Peter’s house, He saw Peter’s mother-in-law sick in bed with a fever. ¹⁵ So He touched her hand, and the fever left her, and she got up and began to serve Him. ¹⁶ When evening came, many who were demon-possessed were brought to Jesus, and He drove out the spirits with a word and healed all the sick.

²⁸ When Jesus arrived on the other side in the region of the Gergesenes, He was met by two demon-possessed men coming from the tombs. They were so violent that no one could pass that way.

² Just then some men brought to Him a paralytic lying on a mat. When Jesus saw their faith, He said to the paralytic, “Take courage, son; your sins are forgiven you.” ³ On seeing this, some of the scribes said to themselves, “This man is blaspheming!” ⁴ But Jesus knew what they were thinking and said, “Why do you harbor evil in your hearts? ⁵ Which is easier: to say, ‘Your sins are forgiven,’ or to say, ‘Get up and walk?’ ⁶ But so that you may know that the Son of Man has authority on earth to forgive sins...” Then He said to the paralytic, “Get up, pick up your mat, and go home.” ⁷ And the man got up and went home. ⁸ When the crowds saw this, they marveled and glorified God, who had given such authority to men.

²⁶ And the news about this spread throughout that region.

³¹ But they went out and spread the news about Him throughout the land. ³² As they were leaving, a demon-possessed man who was mute was brought to Jesus.

²² Then a demon-possessed man who was blind and mute was brought to Jesus, and He healed the man so that the blind and mute man could both speak and see.

¹ At that time Herod the tetrarch heard the reports about Jesus

²² And a Canaanite woman from that region came to Him, crying out, “Lord, Son of David, have mercy on me! My daughter is miserably possessed by a demon.”

¹⁵ “Lord, have mercy on my son,” he said. “He has seizures and is suffering terribly. He often falls into the fire or into the water.

¹⁸ Then Jesus rebuked the demon, and it came out of the boy, and he was healed from that moment.

²⁸ And the news about Jesus spread quickly through the whole region of Galilee.

³² That evening, after sunset, people brought to Jesus all who were sick and demon-possessed,

³ Then a paralytic was brought to Him, carried by four men.

² As soon as Jesus got out of the boat, He was met by a man with an unclean spirit, who was coming from the tombs. ³ This man had been living in the tombs and could no longer be restrained, even with chains. ⁴ Though he was often bound with chains and shackles, he had broken the chains and shattered the shackles. Now there was no one with the strength to subdue him. ⁵ Night and day in the mountains and in the tombs he kept crying out and cutting himself with stones. ⁶ When the man saw Jesus from a distance, he ran and fell on his knees before Him. ⁷ And he shouted in a loud voice, “What do You want with me, Jesus, Son of the Most High God? I beg You before God not to torture me!” ⁸ For Jesus had already declared, “Come out of this man, you unclean spirit!” ⁹ “What is your name?” Jesus asked. “My name is Legion,” he replied, “for we are many.” ¹⁰ And he begged Jesus repeatedly not to send them out of that region. ¹¹ There on the nearby hillside a large herd of pigs was feeding. ¹² So all the demons begged Jesus, “Send us to the pigs, so that we may enter them.” ¹³ So Jesus immediately gave them permission, and the unclean spirits came out and went into the pigs, and the herd of about two thousand rushed down the steep bank into the sea and drowned in the water. ¹⁴ Those tending the pigs ran off and reported this in the town and countryside, and the people went out to see what had happened. ¹⁵ When they came to Jesus, they saw the man who had been possessed by the legion of demons sitting there, clothed and in his right mind; and they were afraid. ¹⁶ Those who had seen it described what had happened to the demon-possessed man and also to the pigs. ¹⁷ And the people began to beg Jesus to leave their region. ¹⁸ As He was getting into the boat, the man who had been possessed by the demons begged to go with Him.

² This was the first census to take place while Quirinius was governor of Syria.

³³ In the synagogue there was a man possessed by the spirit of an unclean demon. He cried out in a loud voice, ³⁴ “Ha! What do You want with us, Jesus of Nazareth? Have You come to destroy us? I know who You are—the Holy One of God!” ³⁵ But Jesus rebuked the demon. “Be silent!” He said. “Come out of him!” At this, the demon threw the man down before them all and came out without harming him.

¹⁵ But the news about Jesus spread all the more, and great crowds came to hear Him and to be healed by Him of their sicknesses.

²⁷ When Jesus stepped ashore, He was met by a man from the town who had been demon-possessed for a long time. This man had not worn clothing or lived in a house, but he stayed in the tombs. ²⁸ When the man saw Jesus, he cried out and fell down before Him, shouting in a loud voice, “What do You want with me, Jesus, Son of the Most High God? I beg You not to torture me!” ²⁹ For Jesus had commanded the unclean spirit to come out of the man. Many times it had seized him, and though he was bound with chains and shackles, he had broken the chains and been driven by the demon into solitary places. ³⁰ “What is your name?” Jesus asked. “Legion,” he replied, because many demons had gone into him. ³¹ And he kept begging Jesus not to order them to go into the Abyss. ³² There on the hillside a large herd of pigs was feeding. So the demons begged Jesus to let them enter the pigs, and He gave them permission. ³³ Then the demons came out of the man and went into the pigs, and the herd rushed down the steep bank into the lake and was drowned. ³⁴ When those tending the pigs saw what had happened, they ran off and reported this in the town and countryside. ³⁵ So the people went out to see what had happened. They came to Jesus and found the man whom the demons had left, sitting at Jesus’ feet, clothed and in his right mind; and they were afraid. ³⁶ Meanwhile, those who had seen it reported how the demon-possessed man had been healed. ³⁷ Then all the people of the region of the Gadarenes asked Jesus to depart from them, because great fear had taken hold of them. So He got into the boat and started back.

²¹ But others replied, “These are not the words of a man possessed by a demon. Can a demon open the eyes of the blind?”

²³ and sent them with this letter: The apostles and the elders, your brothers, To the brothers among the Gentiles in Antioch, Syria, and Cilicia: Greetings.

⁴¹ And he traveled through Syria and Cilicia, strengthening the churches.

¹ When Jesus saw the crowds, He went up on the mountain and sat down. His disciples came to Him,

¹ When Jesus came down from the mountain, large crowds followed Him.

¹⁵ Aware of this, Jesus withdrew from that place. Large crowds followed Him, and He healed them all,

² Large crowds followed Him, and He healed them there.

⁷ So Jesus withdrew with His disciples to the sea, accompanied by a large crowd from Galilee, Judea, ⁸ Jerusalem, Idumea, the region beyond the Jordan, and the vicinity of Tyre and Sidon. The large crowd came to Him when they heard what great things He was doing.
