⁴ And Joseph also ascended from Galilee, out of a city called Nazareth, into Jewry: unto the city of David, which is called Bethlehem: because he was of the house and lineage of David:

¹⁹ And thus died Rachel, and was buried in the way to Ephrata which now is called Bethlehem.

⁷ And after I came from Mesopotamia, Rachel died upon my hand in the land of Canaan, by the way: when I had but a field's breadth to go unto Ephrata. And I buried her there in the way to Ephrata which is now called Bethlehem."

¹⁷ And her neighbours gave it a name saying, "There is a child borne to Naomi, and called it Obed: he is the father of Jesse, the father of David.

²¹ Salmon begat Boaz, Boaz begat Obed, ²² Obed begat Jesse, Jesse begat David.

¹ And then the LORD said unto Samuel, "How long wilt thou mourn for Saul, seeing I have cast him away from reigning over Israel? Fill a horn with ointment, and come: I will send thee to Jesse the Bethlehemite, for I have spied me a king among his sons."

⁴ And Samuel did as the LORD bade him. And when he came to Bethlehem, the elders of the town were astonished at his coming, and said, "Betokeneth thy coming peace?"

¹² And this David was the son of an Ephrathite of Bethlehem Judah, named Jesse; which Jesse had eight sons, and was an old man in the days of Saul among the people.

⁵⁸ And Saul said to him, "Whose son art thou, thou lad?" And David answered, "The son of thy servant Jesse the Bethlehemite."

⁶ If thy father miss me, then say, 'David asked leave of me, that he might go to Bethlehem to his own city, for there is holden a yearly feast for all his kin.'

² And thou Bethlehem Ephrata, art little among the thousands of Judah: Out of thee shall come one, unto me, which shall be the governour in Israel: whose outgoing hath been from the beginning, and from everlasting.

¹ When Jesus was born at Bethlehem in Jewry in the time of Herod the king, Behold, there came wise men from the East to Jerusalem, ² saying, "Where is he that is born King of the Jews? We have seen his star in the East and are come to worship him." ³ When Herod the king had heard this, he was troubled, and all Jerusalem with him. ⁴ And he gathered all the chief Priests and Scribes of the people, and asked of them where Christ should be born. ⁵ And they said unto him, "In Bethlehem in Jewry; for thus it is written by the Prophet, ⁶ 'And thou Bethlehem, in the land of Jewry, art not the least concerning the Princes of Judah: For out of thee shall come the captain, that shall govern my people Israel.'"

²³ and went and dwelt in a city called Nazareth: to fulfill that which was spoken by the Prophets, "He shall be called a Nazarite."

²⁶ And in the sixth month the angel Gabriel was sent from God unto a city of Galilee, named Nazareth, ²⁷ to a virgin espoused to a man, whose name was Joseph, of the house of David: and the virgin's name was Mary.
