⁹ & said to Saul: wherfore geuest thou an eare to mennes wordes, that saye: Dauid seketh the euyl?

¹⁶ Thou shalt not goo vp & doune a preuy accusee amonge thy people, nether shalt thou helpe to shedde the bloud of thy neyghbour: I am the Lorde.

¹⁹ Now heare therfore (my lord king) the wordes of thy seruaunt Yf the lorde haue stered the vp against me, he shal smel the sauoure of sacryfyce. But & yf they be the children of men, cursed be they before the Lorde. For they haue cast me out from abyding in the enheritaunce of the Lorde, saying: hence & go serue other Goddes.

⁵ Who so preuely sclaundereth hys neyghboure. hym wyl I destroye: Who so hath a prowd loke and an hye stomacke, I may not awaye with him.

⁶ Their iudges stomble at the stone, yet heare they my wordes, that they be ioyfull.

²⁸ A frowarde bodye causeth stryfe, and he that is a blabbe of his tonge, maketh deuisyon amonge princes.

⁴ A wycked bodye holdeth muche of false lippes, and a dissemblyng personne geueth eare to a dysceatefull tonge.

⁸ The words of a sclanderer are very woundes, and go thorow vnto the inmost parts of the body.

²³ The North wind driueth away the raine, euen so doth an earnest sober countenances backbyters tong.

²⁰ Where no wodde is, there the fyre goeth oute: and where the backcbyter is taken awaye, there the stryfe ceaseth. ²¹ Coales kyndle heate, and wode the fire: euen so doth a braulynge felowe stere vp varyaunce. ²² A slaunderers wordes are lyke flaterye, but they pearse the inwarde partes of the bodye.

²⁸ A dissembling tong hateth one that rebuketh hym, and a flattering mouth worketh mischefe.

¹² If a prynce delyte iu lyes, all his seruauntes are vngodly.

²¹ Take not hede vnto euery word that is spoken, leste thou heare thy seruaunt curse the: ²² for thyne owne herte knoweth, that thou thy selfe also hast ofte tymes spoken euell by other men.

⁶ and the tonge is fyre, and a worlde of wickednes. So is the tong set among our members, that it defyleth the whole body and setteth a fyre all that we haue of nature, & is it selfe set a fyre euen of hell.
