⁸ For bodely exercyse profyteth lytell: But godlynes is good vnto all thynges, as a thynge whiche hath promyses of the lyfe that is now, and of the lyfe to come.

¹ If thou shalt herken dilygently vnto the voyce of the Lorde thy God, to obserue and to do al hys commaundementes which I commaunde the thys day. The Lord wyl set the vp on hye aboue all nacions of the erth. ² And al these blessinges shal come on the and ouertake the, yf thou shalt herken vnto the voyce of the Lorde thy God. ³ Blessed shalt thou be in the towne and blessed in the feldes, ⁴ blessed shalbe the frute of thy body, the frute of thy grounde and the frute of thy catell, the frute of thyne oxen, and thy flockes of shepe, ⁵ blessed shall thyne aulmery be and thy store. ⁶ Blessed shalt thou be, both when thou goest out, and blessed when thou comest in. ⁷ The Lord shal smyte thyne enemyes that ryse agaynst the before thy face. They shall come out agaynst the one way, & flee before the .vij. wayes. ⁸ The Lord shall commaunde the blessynge to be wyth the in thy store houses & in al that thou settest thyne hande to, and wyll blesse the in the lande whyche the Lorde thy God geueth the. ⁹ The Lord shall make the an holy people vnto him self, as he hath sworne vnto the: yf thou shalt kepe the commandementes of the Lord thy God and walke in his wayes. ¹⁰ And al nacions of the erth shall se that thou arte called after the name of the Lorde, and they shalbe aferde of the. ¹¹ And the Lord shal make the plentuous in goodes, in the frute of thy body, in the frute of thy catell and in the frute of thy grounde, in the land whych the Lord sware vnto thy fathers to geue the. ¹² The Lord shall open vnto the hys good treasure, euen the heauen, to geue rayne vnto thy lande in due ceason and to blesse al the laboures of thyne hande. And thou shalt lende vnto many nacions, but shalt not nede to borowe thy selfe. ¹³ And the Lord shall set the before and not behynde, & thou shalt be aboue only and not beneth: yf that thou herken vnto the commaundementes of the Lorde thy God which I commaunde the this day to kepe and to do them. ¹⁴ And se that thou bowe not from any of these wordes which I commaunde the this daye ether to the ryght hande or to the lefte, that thou woldest goo after straunge goddes to serue them.

²² Then sayde Samuel: hath the Lorde as great pleasure in burnt sacryfyces & offerynges, as he hath that thou shouldest obeye hys voyce? Beholde, to obeye is better then offeryng, and to geue heade is better then the fat of rammes.

¹⁹ He delyuereth the oute of syxe troubles so that in the seuenth there can no harme touch the. ²⁰ In the middest of honger he saueth the from death: and when it is warre, from the power of the swearde. ²¹ He shal kepe the from the perlous tonge that so when trouble commeth, thou shalt not nede to feare. ²² In destruccion & derth thou shalt be mercy, & shalt not be afrayed for the beastes of the earth: ²³ But the castels in the land shal be confederate with the, & the beastes of the felde shall geue the peace. ²⁴ Ye thou shalt knowe, that thy dwellinge place shalbe in reste: thou shalt beholde thy substaunce, & be nomore punished for synne ²⁵ Thou shalt se also, that thy sede shall encrease, and that thy posteryte shalbe as the grasse vpon the earth. ²⁶ Thou shalt come to thy graue in a fayre age, lyke as the corne sheeues are brought into the barne in due season.

² May a man be compared vnto God in wysdome, though he seme to hym selfe, for to be lyke him?

³ Put thou thy trust in the Lorde, and be doyng good: so shalt thou dwel in the lande, & verely it shall fede the. ⁴ Delyte thou in the Lorde, & he shall geue the thy hertes desire.

⁹ For wycked doers shalbe roted oute, but they that paciently abyde the Lord, shall enheret the lande.

¹¹ But the meke spreted shall possesse the earth, and haue pleasure in muche rest.

¹⁶ A small thinge that the righteous hath, is better then great ryches of the vngodly. ¹⁷ For the armes of the vngodly shalbe broken, but the Lorde vpholdeth the ryghteous. ¹⁸ The Lord knoweth the dayes of the Godly and their inheritaunce endureth for euer. ¹⁹ They shall not be confounded in the perlous tyme, and in the daies of derth thei shal haue ynough.

²⁹ Yea, the righteous shal possesse the land, and dwell therein for euer.

⁷ Heare, O my people: let me speake, let me testify among you, O Israell: I am God, euen thy God. ⁸ I reproue the not because of thy sacryfice thy burnteofferynges are allwaye before me. ⁹ I wil take no bullockes out of thy house, nor gotes out of thy foldes. ¹⁰ For all the beastes of the felde are myne, and thousandes of cattell vppon the hylles. ¹¹ I know al the foules vpon the mountaynes, and the wylde beastes of the felde are in my sight. ¹² If I be hongry, I wyll not tell the: for the whole worlde is myne, & all that therein is. ¹³ Thynkest thou, that I will eate the fleshe of oxen, or drynke the bloude of goates? ¹⁴ Offre vnto God prayse and thankesgeuynge, and paye thy vowes vnto the most hyest. ¹⁵ And call vpon me in the tyme of trouble, so wyll I heare the, that thou shalte thanke me.

¹¹ For the Lord God is a light and defence, the Lorde wyll geue grace and worshyppe, and no good thynge shall he wytholde from them that lyue a godly lyfe.

¹⁰ There shall no euell happen vnto the, neither shall any plage come nye thy dwelling. ¹¹ For he shall gyue his aungels charge ouer the, to kepe the in all thy wayes. ¹² They shall beare the in their handes, that thou hurt not thy fote agaynst a stone. ¹³ Thou shalt go vpon the Lyon and Adder the yonge lyon and the Dragon shalte thou treade vnder thy fete. ¹⁴ Because he hath set his loue vppon me, I shall deliuer hym: I shal defende him, for he hath knowen my name. ¹⁵ When he calleth vpon me, I shall heare hym: yea, I am with hym in hys trouble, wherout I will deliuer him, and bring hym to honoure. ¹⁶ With longe lyfe will I satisfye him, and shewe hym my saluacion.

¹ Prayse the euerlastynge. Blessed is the man that feareth the Lord, and hath great delite in hys commaundementes. ² Hys sede shal be mighty vpon earth the generacyon of the faythfull shalbe blessed. ³ Ryches and, plenteousnesse shalbe in hys house, and hys ryghtuousnesse endureth for euer.

¹ The song of the steares. Blessed are all they that feare the Lord, & walke in his wayes. ² For thou shalte eate the laboures of thyne owne handes: O well is the, happy art thou. ³ Thy wyfe shalbe as the frutefull vyne vpon the walles of thy house. Thy chyldren lyke the Olyue braunches rounde about thy table. ⁴ Lo, thus shal the man be blessed, that feareth the lorde. ⁵ The lord shall so blesse the out of Syon, that thou shalt se Hierusalem in prosperytie all thy lyfe longe. ⁶ Yea, that thou shalt se thy chylders chyldren, and peace vpon Israel.

¹⁹ He fulfilleth the desire of them that feare him, he heareth their crie, and helpeth them.

¹⁶ Vpon her righte hande is longe lyfe, and vppon her lefte hande is ryches and honour. ¹⁷ Her wayes are pleasaunte wayes, and al her pathes are peaceable. ¹⁸ She is a tree of lyfe to them that laye holde vpon her, and blessed are they that kepe her fast.

²³ The feare of the Lord preserueth the life yea, it geueth plenteousnes, without the visitacion of any plage.

⁴ The ende of lowlines and the feare of God, is riches, honour, prosperity and health.

¹² But thoughe an euell persone offende an hundred tymes, and haue a longe life: yet am I sure, that it shall go well wyth them that feare God, because they haue hym before their eyes.

¹¹ Why offre ye so manye sacrifyces vnto me? I am discontent for the brentofferinges of wethers and with the fatnesse of fedbeastes. I haue no pleasure in the bloude of bullockes, lambes & gootes. ¹² When ye appeare before me, who requyreth you to treade wythin my porches? ¹³ Offre me no mo oblacions, for it is but loste laboure. I abhorre youre incense. I maye not awaye with youre new moones, youre Sabbathes and solempne dayes. Youre fastinges are also in vayne. ¹⁴ I hate youre newe holye dayes and fastynges, euen from my very hert. They make me weerye, I can not abyde them. ¹⁵ Though ye holde oute your handes, yet turne I myne eyes from you. And though ye make manye prayers, yet heare I nothynge at all, for youre handes are full of bloude. ¹⁶ Washe you, make you cleane, put awaye youre euill thoughtes out of my sighte, cease from doynge of euyll and vyolence.

¹⁰ Then shall they saye. O happye are the godly, for they maye enioye the frutes of theyr studyes.

¹⁷ And the rewarde of ryghtuousnesse shalbe peace, and her frute reste and quyetnesse for euer. ¹⁸ And my people shall dwell in the ynnes of peace, in my tabernacle and pleasure where there is ynough in them all.

¹⁶ He it is, that shall dwell on hye whose sauegarde shalbe in the true rocke, to him shal be geuen the right true meate and drincke.

³ Wherfore fast we (saye they) and thou seist it not? we put oure lyues to straytnesse, & thou regardest it not? ⁴ Beholde, when ye fast, your lust remayneth still: for ye do no lesse vyolence to youre detters: lo, ye falle to stryfe and debate, and to smite hym wyth youre fyst that speaketh vnto you. Ye fast not (as som tyme) that your voyce might be hearde aboue. ⁵ Thyncke ye this fast pleaseth me, that a man shoulde chasten him self for a daye, and to writhe his head aboute lyke an hoke in an hearry cloth, and to lye vpon the earth? Shoulde that be called fasting, or a daye that pleaseth the Lord.

¹³ Therfore thus saieth the Lorde God: Beholde, my seruauntes shall eate, but ye shall haue honger. Beholde, my seruauntes shall dryncke, but ye shall suffre thurste. Beholde my seruauntes shalbe mery, but ye shalbe confounded. ¹⁴ Beholde, my seruauntes shall reioyce for very quyetnesse of herte: But ye shal crye for sorowe of herte, and complayne for vexacyon of mynde.

²⁰ Wherfore brynge ye me incense from Saba, & swete smellinge Calamus from farre countrees? Youre burntofferynges displease me, & I reioyse not in youre sacrifices.

²¹ I hate and abhorre youre holye dayes, & where as ye cense me when ye come together I wyll not accepte it: ²² And though ye offre me brentofferynges, and meateofferynges, yet haue I no pleasure therein. As for youre fat thanckeofferinges, I wil not loke vpon them. ²³ Awaye with that noyse of thy songes, I wyl not heare thy playes of musycke: ²⁴ but se that equite flowe as the water, and ryghtuousnesse as a mightie streame.

³ blessed are the pore in sprete: for theirs is the kingdom of heauen. ⁴ Blessed are they that morne, for they shalbe comforted. ⁵ Blessed are the meke: for they shall inheret the earth. ⁶ Blessed are they which honger & thurste for rightuousnes: for they shalbe filled. ⁷ Blessed are the mercifull: for they shal obtaine mercy. ⁸ Blessed are the pure in hert: for thei shal se God. ⁹ Blessed are the peace makers: for thei shalbe called the children of God. ¹⁰ Blessed are they which suffer persecucion for rightuousnesse sake: for theirs is the kingdom of heauen: ¹¹ Blessed are ye when men reuile you and persecute you, and shal falsely say al maner of yuel sayinges against you for my sake. ¹² Reioyce & be glad, for great is your reward in heauen. For so persecuted they the prophetes which were before your dayes.

³³ But rather seke ye first the kyngdome of heauen and the rightuousnes therof, & all these thynge shalbe ministred vnto you.

²⁹ And whosoeuer forsaketh houses, or brethren, or systers, other father or mother, or wyfe or chyldren, or landes, for my names sake, the same shal receyue an .C. folde, & shal enherite euerlasting life.

¹⁹ Thou knowest the commaundementes: breake not matrimonye: kyll not: steale not: beare not false witnes: defraude no man: honour thy father & mother. ²⁰ He aunswered to hym: mayster all these I haue obserued from my youth.

³⁰ which shall not receyue an hundred folde now in this lyfe: houses, & brethren and systers, and mothers, and chyldren, and landes wyth persecucyons, and in the worlde to come eternal lyfe.

³¹ Wherfore seke ye after the kyngdome of God, and all these thynges shall be ministred vnto you. ³² Feare not litel flocke, for it is your fathers pleasure, to geue you a kingdom.

²⁸ For we knowe that all thynges worke for the beste vnto them that loue God, whyche also are called of purpose.

²² whether it be Paule, other Apollo, other Cephas: whether it be the world, other lyfe, other deathe, whether they be present thynges or thinges to come: all are youres,

⁸ Meate maketh vs not acceptable to God. Neither yf we eate are we the better. Neither, yf we eate not, are we the worsse.

²¹ Touche not, tast not, handel not, ²² whiche all perishe wyth the vsynge of them, and are after the commaundementes and doctrines of men, ²³ which thinges haue the symilitude of wysdome in chosen holines and humblenes, and in that they spare not the bodye, and do the fleshe no worship vnto his nede.

⁶ Godlynes is greate ryches, yf a man be content with that he hath.

⁸ Thys is a true saiynge. Of these thynges I would thou shouldest certyfye, that they whiche beleue God, might be dylygent to go forwarde in good workes. These thynges are good and profytable vnto men.

⁹ Whyche was a simylytude for the tyme then present, and in whyche were offered gyftes and sacrifices that coulde not make the mynyster perfecte, as pertaynynge to the conscience, ¹⁰ wyth onelye meates and drynkes and dyuers washynges and iustifiynges of the fleshe, whyche were ordeyned vntyll the tyme of reformacyon.

⁹ Be not caryed aboute wyth dyuerse and straunge learnynge. For it is a good thynge that the herte be stablyshed wyth grace, and not with meates, whiche haue not profyted them that haue had theyr pastyme in them.

³ Accordinge as hys godlye power hath geuen vnto vs al thinges that pertayne vnto lyfe and godlines, thorowe the knowledge of him that hath called vs by vertue & glory, ⁴ by the meanes, wherof are geuen vnto vs excellent and most great promises, that by the helpe of them ye should be partakers of the godly nature, in that ye flee the corruption of worldelye luste.

²⁵ And this is the promes, that he hath promysed vs euen eternal lyfe.

¹² Hym that ouercommeth, wyl I make a pyller in the temple of my God, and he shal go no more out. And I wyl wryte vpon him, the name of my God, and the name of the cytye of my God, newe Ierusalem, which commeth doune out of heauen from my God, & I wyl wryte vpon him my newe name.

²¹ To hym that ouercommeth, wyl I graunt to sit with me in my seate euen as I ouercame and haue sitten wyth my father, in his seate.
