³¹ These come vnto the, after the maner of a great people: yea my people syt doune before the, and heare thy wordes, but they do not there after: for in theyr mouthes they shewe them selues, as though they were feruent, but their herte goeth after theyr owne couetous lucre.

²⁸ And the Lorde hearde the voyce of youre wordes when ye spake vnto me, & he sayed vnto me: I haue heard the voice of the words of thys people which they haue spoken vnto the, they haue well sayed all that they haue sayed. ²⁹ Oh that they had such an hert wyth them to feare me and kepe al my commaundementes alway, that it myght go wel with them & with theyr children foreuer.

³⁶ Neuerthelesse they dyd but flatter him in their mouthes, and dissembled with hym in their tonges. ³⁷ For their herte was not whole with him, neither continued they in his couenaunt.

¹³ And therfore the Lorde shall aunswere theyr stubbournes (Commaunde that maye be commaunded, byd that may be bidden, forbid that may be forbidden, kepe backe that maye be kept backe, here a lytle, there a lytle) That they maye go forth fall back warde, be brosed, snared and taken.

¹³ Therfor thus sayth the Lord: For so much as thys people draweth nye me with theyr mouthe, and prayseth me hyghlye wyth theyr lyppes (where as theyr herte neuerthelesse is farre from me, & the feare which they owe vnto me, that turne they to mens lawes and doctrynes)

¹⁶ Thus sayth the Lorde: go into the streates considre and make inquisicion for the old way and yf it be the good and right waye, then go therein, that ye maye fynde rest for your soules. But they saye: we wyll not walcke therin ¹⁷ and I wil set watchemen ouer you, & therfore take hede vnto the voyce of the trompet. But they saye: we wyll not take hede.

³³ If this people, ether eny prophet or preste aske the, and saye: what is the burthen of the Lorde? Thou shalt saye vnto them: What burthen? Therfore wyll I cast you fro me (sayeth the Lord) because ye youre selues are a burthen. ³⁴ And the prophet, preste or people that vseth this terme (the burthen of the Lord) hym wyll I viset, and hys house also. ³⁵ But thus shall ye saye, euery one to another: What answere hath the Lorde geuen? or, what is the Lordes commaundement? ³⁶ And as for the burthen of the Lorde, ye shall speake nomore of it: for euerye mans owne worde is his burthen, because ye haue altered the wordes of the lyuynge God the Lorde of Hostes oure God. ³⁷ Thus shall euerye man saye to the Prophetes: what answere hath the Lorde geuen the? Or, what sayeth the Lord? ³⁸ And not ones to name the burthen of the Lorde. Therfore thus sayeth the Lord: For so moch as ye haue vsed thys terme (the burthen of the Lorde) where as I not withstandinge sent vnto you and forbade you to speake of the Lordes burthen.

¹ Now when Ieremye had ended all the wordes of the Lord God vnto the people (for their sakes to whome God had sent hym) ² Azariah the sonne of Osaiah, & Iohanan the sonne of Kareah with al the proud personnes, sayde vnto Ieremy: Thou lyest, the Lord our God hath not sent the to speake vnto vs, that we shoulde not go into Egypt, and dwel there. ³ But Baruch the sonne of Neriah prouoketh the agaynst vs, that he might brynge vs into the captiuite of the Caldees: that they myght slay vs, and carye vs away presoners vnto Babylon. ⁴ So Iohanan the sonne of Kareah, & al the captaynes of the Hoste, and al the people folowed not the commaundement of the Lord. Namely, to dwell in the lande of Iuda: ⁵ But Iohanan the sonne of Kareah, and all the captaynes of the Hoste, caryed awaye al the remnaunte in Iuda, that were come together agayne from the Heathen (amonge whome they had bene scatred) to dwell in the land of Iuda. ⁶ Men, wemen, chyldren, the kynges doughters, all those that Nabuzaradan the chefe captayne had left with Godoliah the sonne of Ahikam. They caryed awaye also the prophet Ieremy, Baruch the sonne of Neriah, ⁷ & so came into Egipte: for they were not obeyent vnto the commaundement of God. Thus came they to Thaphnis.

¹⁶ As for the wordes that thou hast spoken vnto vs in the name of the Lorde, we will in no wyse heare them:

¹ It happened, that in the syxte yeare the fyfth daye of the syxte moneth I sat in my house, & the Lordes of the councell of Iuda with me: and the hande of the lord God fell euen there vpon me.

¹ There resorted vnto me certayne of the elders of Israel, and satte doune by me.

¹ In the .xvij. yeare the .x. day of the .v. Moneth, it happened, that certayne of the elders of Israel came vnto me, for to aske councell at the Lord, and sat them doune by me. ² Then came the worde of the Lorde vnto me on this maner. ³ Thou sonne of man: speake vnto the elders of Israel, and say vnto them: Thus sayeth the Lorde God: Are ye come hytherto to aske any thinge at me? As truely as I lyue (sayeth the Lorde) ⁴ I wyll geue you no answere. Wilt thou not reproue them (thou sonne of man) wilt thou not reproue them? Shew them the abhomynacions of their forefathers, ⁵ and tell them: Thus sayeth the Lorde God: In the day when I chose Israel, and lyft vp myne hand vpon the sede of the house of Iacob, and shewed my selfe vnto them in the lande of Egypte: Yea, when I lyfte vp myne hande ouer them, and sayd: I am the Lorde youre God, ⁶ euen in the daye that I lift vp mine hande ouer them, to bring them out of the lande of Egipte, into a lande that I haue prouided for them, which floweth with milcke and hony, and it is a pleasaunte lande amonge al other: ⁷ Then sayde I vnto them: Cast awaye euerye man the abhomynacyons that he hath before him, and defyle not youre selues with the Idoles of Egipte, for I am the Lorde youre God. ⁸ But they rebelled agaynst me, and would not folowe me, to cast awaye euery man the abhominacions of his eyes, & to forsake the Idoles of Egipte. Then I made to poure my indignacion ouer them, and to satisfye my wrath vpon them, yea euen in the myddest of the lande of Egipte. ⁹ But I woulde not do it, for my names sake, that it shoulde not be vnhalowed before the Heathen, amonge whom they dwelt, and among whom I shewed my selfe vnto them, that it woulde brynge them out of the lande of Egipte. ¹⁰ Now when I had caried them out of the lande of Egipte, and brought them into the wildernesse: ¹¹ I gaue them my commaundementes, and shewed them my lawes, whiche who so kepeth, shall lyue in them. ¹² I gaue them also my holy dayes, to be a token betwixte me and them, and therby know, that I am the Lorde, whiche haloweth them. ¹³ And yet the house of Israel rebelled agaynste me in the wildernesse, they woulde not walcke in my commaundementes, they haue cast awaye my lawes (whiche whoso kepeth, shoulde lyue in them) and my Sabboth dayes haue thy greatly vnhalowed. Then I made me to poure oute my indignacion vpon them, and to consume them in the wyldernesse. ¹⁴ Yet I would not do it, for my names sake: lest it shoulde be dishonoured before the Heathen, from the which I had caried them away. ¹⁵ But I swore vnto them in the wildernesse, that I woulde not byrnge them into the lande, whiche I gaue them, a land that floweth with milck and honye, and is a pleasure of all landes, ¹⁶ and that because they refused my lawes, and walcked not in my commaundementes, but and vnhalowed my Sabbathes, for their herte was gone after their Idoles. ¹⁷ Neuerthelesse myne eye spared them so that I woulde not vtterly slaye them, and consume them in the wyldernes. ¹⁸ Moreouer I sayde vnto their sonnes in the wildernesse: walcke not in the statutes of your forfathers kepe not their ordinaunces, and defyle not youre selues with their Idoles, ¹⁹ for I am the Lorde youre God. But walcke in my statutes, kepe my lawes and do them, ²⁰ halowe my Sabbothes: for they are a token betwyxte me and you, that ye may know, howe that I am the Lorde. ²¹ Notwythstandinge, their sonnes rebelled against me also: they walcked not in my statutes, they kepte not my lawes to fulfyll them (whiche he that doeth shall lyue in them) neyther halowed they my Sabboth dayes. Then I made me againe to poure out my indignacion ouer them, and to satisfye my wrath vpon them in the wildernesse. ²² Neuerthelesse I wythdrewe my hande for my names sake, least it shoulde be vnhalowed amonge the Heathen, before whome I had brought them forth. ²³ I lift vp myne hand ouer them also in the wildernesse, that I would scatre them amonge the Heathen, & strowe them amonge the nacions: ²⁴ because they had not kepte my lawes, but cast asyde my commaundementes, vnhalowed my Sabbothes, and lyft vp their eyes to their fathers Idoles. ²⁵ Wherfore I gaue them also commaundementes not good, and lawes thorow the whyche they shoulde not lyue, ²⁶ & I vnhalowed them in their owne gyftes (when I appointed for my selfe all their fyrstborne) to make them desolate: that they might knowe, howe that I am the Lorde. ²⁷ Therfore (O thou sonne of man) tell the house of Israell, thus sayeth the Lorde God: Besyde all this, youre forefathers haue yet blasphemed me more, and greatly offended agaynst me. ²⁸ For after I had brought them in to the lande, that I promysed to geue them, when they sawe euery hye hyll and the thicke trees: they made their offerynges, and prouoked me with their oblacyons, makinge swete sauoures there, and poured oute their drynckeofferynges. ²⁹ Then I asked them: what haue ye to do withall, that ye go thyther? And therefore it is called the hye place vnto thys daye. ³⁰ Wherfore, speake vnto the house of Israel: Thus sayeth the Lorde God: yea are euen as vnclene as youre forefathers, and committe whordome also with their abhominacions. ³¹ In al youre Idoles, where vnto ye bring your oblacions, and to whose honoure ye burne your children: ye defyle youre selues, euen vnto this day: howe darre ye then come and aske any question at me? O ye housholde of Israel? As truly as I liue (saieth the Lord God) ye get no answere of me: ³² & as for the thinge, that ye go aboute, it shall not come to passe, where as ye saye: we wil be as the heathen, & do as other people in the lande, wood and stone wyl we worshippe.

²⁷ Thy rulers in the ate like rauishing wolues, to shed bloude, and to destroye soules, for their owne couetous lucre.

²⁴ No man can serue two maysters. For eyther he shall hate the one & loue the other: yea or eles he shall leane to the one & dispise the other. Ye cannot serue God & Mammon.

²⁴ Whosoeuer heareth of me these sayinges and doethe the same, I wyll lyken hym vnto a wyse man which buylt hys housse on a rocke ²⁵ and aboundaunce of rayne descended, and the flouddes came, and the windes blew and bet vpon that same housse, and it fell not because it was grounded on the rocke. ²⁶ And whosoeuer heareth of me these sayinges and doeth them not, shalbe lykened vnto a folyshe man whyche buylt hys housse vpon the sande ²⁷ and abundance of rayne descended, and the floudes came, and the wyndes blewe and bet vpon that housse, and it fell, and great was the fall of it.

²² He that was sowen among thornes, is he that heareth the worde of God: but the care of thys world, and the disceythfulnes of ryches choke the word, & so is he made vnfruteful.

²² When the ionge man hearde that saying: he went away mournynge. For he had great possessions.

⁴⁸ He is lyke a man which builde an house and digged depe and layde the foundacion on a rocke. When the waters arose, the floud bet vpon that house, and coulde not moue it for it was grounded vpon a rocke. ⁴⁹ But he that heareth and doeth not, is lyke a man that without foundacion bylt an house vpon the earth, against which the floude dyd beate and it fell by and by, and the fall of that house was greate.

²¹ He aunswered and sayde vnto them: my mother and my brethren are these which heare the worde of God and do it.

³⁹ And this woman had a syster called Marye whiche sate at Iesus fete, and hearde his preachynge.

²⁸ But he sayde: Yea, happye are they that heare the worde of God, and kepe it.

¹⁵ Wherfore, he sayde vnto them: take hede, and beware of coueteousnes. For no mannes lyfe standeth in the abundaunce of the thynges whiche he possesseth. ¹⁶ And he put forth a simylitude vnto them, sayinge. The grounde of a certayne ryche man brought forth frutes plenteouslye, ¹⁷ and he thoughte in hym selfe sayinge: what shall I do? because I haue no roume where to bestowe my frutes? ¹⁸ And he sayed: Thys will I do. I wyl destroy my barnes, and buylde greater, and therein wyll I gather all my frutes, and my goodes, ¹⁹ and I wyll saye to my soule: Soule thou hast muche goodes layde vp in store for many yeares: take thyne ease, eate, drinke, and be mery. ²⁰ But God sayed vnto hym: Thou fole, thys nyghte wyll they fetche awaye thy soule agayne from the. Then whose shall these thinges be which thou haste prouyded? ²¹ So is it with hym that gathereth ryches, and is not ryche in God.

¹⁴ All these thynges hearde the phariseis also which were couetous, and they mocked hym.

³³ Then sent I for the immediatly, and thou hast wel done for to come. Nowe are we all here present before God, to heare al thinges that are commaunded vnto the of God.

⁵ For this ye knowe, that no whormonger, other vncleane persone, or couetous person, whyche is the worshypper of Images, hath anye inheritaunce in the kyngdome of Christe and of God.

⁹ They that wyll be rych, fall into temptacyon and snares, and into many folysh and noysome lustes which drowne men in perdicyon and destruccyon. ¹⁰ For couetousnes is the rote of all euyll, whiche whyle some lusted after, they erred from the faythe and tangled them selues wyth manye sorowes.

²² And se that ye be doars of the worde & not hearers onely, deceyuyng your owne selues wyth sophystrye. ²³ For yf any heare the word, and do it not, he is lyke vnto a man that beholdeth his bodly face in a glasse. ²⁴ For assone as he hath loked on hym selfe, he goeth hys waye, and forgetteth immediatly what hys fashyon was.

¹⁴ What auayleth it my brethren, thoughe a man saye he hath faythe, when he hath no deedes? Can fayth saue hym? ¹⁵ If a brother or a sister be naked or destitute of dayly fode, ¹⁶ and one of you saye vnto them: Departe in peace, God sende you warmnes and fode: not wyth standynge ye geue them not those thynges which are nedefull to the bodye: what helpeth it them?

¹⁷ Whosoeuer hath this worldes good, and seeth his brother haue nede, and shutteth vp his compassion from him, howe dwelleth the loue of God in hym? ¹⁸ My babes, let vs not loue in worde neyther in tonge, but wyth the dede and in veryty:
