Than Abimelech kyng of Gerar sent and set Sara away. ³ And God came to Abimelech by nyght in a dreame & sayd vnto him: Se, thou art but a dead man for the womans sake whych thou haste taken awaye, for she is a mans wyfe. ⁴ But Abimelech had not yet come nye her, & therfore sayde: Lorde wylt thou sley ryghtewes people? ⁵ sayde not he vnto me, that she was hys syster? yea and sayde not she herself that he was her brother? wyth a pure herte and innocent handes haue I done thys. ⁶ And God sayde vnto hym in a dreame. I wot it wel that thou dyddest it in the purenesse of thy herte. And therfore I kepte the that thou shouldest not synne agaynst me, nether suffred I the to come nygh her. ⁷ Nowe therfore delyuer the man his wyfe agayne, for he is a Prophete. And let him pray for the that thou mayst lyue. But and yf thou delyuer her not agayn, be sure that thou shalt dye the deth, wyth al that thou hast. ⁸ Than Abimelech rose vp be tymes in the mornyng and called al his seruauntes, & told all these thynges in their eares, and the men were sore afrayde. ⁹ And Abimelech called Abraham and sayd vnto him: What hast thou done vnto us, & what haue I offended the, that thou shouldest brynge on me and on my kingdome so great a synne? thou hast done dedes vnto me that ought not to be done. ¹⁰ And Abimelech sayde moreouer vnto Abraham: What sawest thou that moued the to do thys thynge? ¹¹ And Abraham answered: I thought that peraduenture the feare of God was not in thys place, & that they shulde sley me for my wyfes sake: ¹² yet in very dede she is my syster, the doughter of my father, but not of my mother: and became my wife. ¹³ And after god caused me to wandre out of my fathers house, I sayd vnto her: This kyndnesse shalt thou shewe vnto me in all places where we come, that thou saye of me, howe that I am thy brother. ¹⁴ Than toke Abimelech shepe and oxen, men seruauntes & wemen seruauntes & gaue them vnto Abraham, & delyuered hym Sara hys wyfe agayn. ¹⁵ And Abimelech sayde: beholde the land lyeth before the, dwel where it pleaseth the best. ¹⁶ And vnto Sara he sayde: Se I haue geuen thy brother a thousand peeces of siluer, behold this thing shal be a couering to thyne eyes & vnto al that are wyth the and vnto all men an excuse. ¹⁷ And so Abraham prayd vnto God, & god healed Abimelech and his wyfe and his maydens, so that they bare chyldren. ¹⁸ For the lord had closed to, all the matryces of the house of Abimelech, because of Sara Abrahams wyfe.

¹⁹ And the costes of the Cananites were from Sydon tyll thou come to Gerara & to Asa, & tyl thou come to Sodoma, Gomorra, Adama, Zeboim, euen vnto Lasa.

¹ Then Abram departed out of Egypt, both he and his wife, & al that he had, and Lot with hym vnto the Southe.

⁷ And then turned they & came to the well of Iudgemente whyche is Cades, and smot all the countrye of Amalechites, and also the Amorites that dwell in Hazezon Thamer.

¹ Sarai Abrams wyfe bare hym no chyldren. But she had an hand mayd an Egyptian, whose name was Hagar.

⁷ And the Angell of the lord found her besyde a fountayn of water in the wildernes: euen by a well in the way to Sur.

¹ And the Lorde apeared vnto hym in the okegroue of Mamre as he sat in hys tent dore in the heate of the daye.

⁶² And Isaac was a commynge from the wel of the lyuynge & seynge, for he dwelt in the south contrey,

¹ And there fel a derth in the land passyng the fyrst derth that fell in the dayes of Abraham. Wherfore Isaac wente vnto Abimelech kynge of the Phylystyans vnto Gerar.

⁶ And Isaac dwelled in Gerar.

²⁰ And the herdmen of Gerar did stryue with Isaacs herdmen, saying: the water is ours. Then called he the well Eseck, bicause they stroue with him.

²⁶ Then came Abimelech to hym from Gerar & Ahusath his frende and Phitol hys chyefe captayne.

²⁶ And they went and came to Moses and Aaron & vnto all the multitude of the chyldren of Israell, vnto the wyldernesse of Pharan: euen vnto Cades, and broughte them worde and also vnto all the congregation, and shewed them the frute of the lande.

¹⁶ Then we cried vnto the Lorde and he hearde oure voyces, and sent an angell & hath fet vs oute of Egypte. And beholde, we are in Cades a city harde by the borders of thy contry

¹⁹ And then we departed from Horeb and walked thorow all that greate & terrible wyldernesse as ye haue sene alonge by the waye that leadeth vnto the hylles of the Amorites, as the Lord our God commaunded vs, and came to Cades barne.

⁵¹ For ye trespaced againste me amonge the children of Israel at the waters of strife, at Cades in the wildernesse of Zin, bicause ye sanctified me not among the children of Israel.

⁷ And Saul slue the Amaleckites from Heuila to Sur that lyeth before Egypte,

¹³ And Asa & the people that was with hym, folowed after them as ferre as Gerar. And the blacke Mores were ouerthrowen, that there bode none alyue of them, but were destroyed of the lord, and of the Hoste. And they caryed awaye a myghty greate pray. ¹⁴ And they smote all the cities rounde aboute Gerar. For the feare of the Lorde came vpon them. And they robbed all the cities, for there was exceadyng muche to be robbed in them.

⁸ the voice of the Lorde shaketh the wylderuesse, yea the Lorde shaketh the wildernesse of Cades.

¹¹ And when he was come nye for to enter into Egypte, he sayed vnto Sarai hys wyfe. Behold, I knowe that thou art a fayre woman to loke vpon. ¹² It wyll come to passe therfore when the Egyptyans se the, that they wyll saye: she is hys wyfe. And so shall they sley me and saue the. ¹³ Saye I pray the therfore that thou arte my sister that I maye fare the better by reason of the, and that my soule may lyue for thy sake.

¹⁵ And Pharaos Lodres sawe hir also, & praysed hyr vnto Pharao: So that she was taken into Pharaos house,

³¹ But when the Ambassadoures of the Lordes of Babylon were sent to hym to enquyre of the wondre that chaunsed in the land, God lefte hym: to tempte hym, that all that was in hys herte myght be knowen.

¹⁶ For a iust man falleth seuen tymes, and riseth vp againe, but the vngodly fal into wickednes.

²⁰ for there is not one iuste vpon earth, that doth good, and synneth not.

¹² And he dreamed: and behold there stode a ladder vpon the earth, & the toppe reached vp to heauen. And see, the angels of God went vp and downe vpon it,

²⁴ And God came to Laban the Syrian in a dreame by nyght, & sayd vnto him: take hede to thy selfe, that thou speake not to Iacob ought saue good.

⁵ Moreouer Iosephe dreamed a dreame & told it his brethren: wherfore they hated him yet the more.

¹ And it fortuned at .ij. yeres ende that Pharao dreamed, & thought that he stode by a ryuers syde, ² and that there came out of the ryuer .vij. goodly kyne and fatflesshed, and fedd in a medowe, ³ and hym thought that .vij. other kyne came vp after them out of the ryuer euel fauored and leane fleshed and stode by the other vpon the brynke of the ryuer. ⁴ And the euyll fauored and leans flesshed kyne: ate vp the .vij. wel fauored and fat kyne: and he awoke there wyth. ⁵ And he slepte agayne and dreamed the second tyme, that seuen eares of corne grewe vpon one stalke rancke and goodly. ⁶ And that .vij. thynne eares blasted wyth the wynde, sprange vp after them: ⁷ and that the .vij. thynne eares deuoured the .vij. rancke and full eares. And than Pharao awaked: & se, here is his dreame. ⁸ When the mornynge came, hys sprete was troubled. And he sent and called for all the sothesayers of Egypte & al the wyse men therof, and tolde them his dreame: but there was none of them that coulde interpretate it vnto Pharao. ⁹ Than spake the chefe buttelar vnto Pharao saying. I do remembre my faute thys daye. ¹⁰ Pharao was angrye wt his seruauntes, & put in warde in the chefe marshals house both me & the chefe baker. ¹¹ And we dreamed both of vs in one nyght & ech mannes dreame of a sondrye interpretacion. ¹² And there was wyth vs a yonge man, an Hebrue borne, seruaunte vnto the chefe marshall. And we told hym, and he declared our dreames to vs accordynge to ether of oure dreames. ¹³ And as he declared them vnto vs, euen so it came to passe. I was restored to myne office agayn, and he was hanged. ¹⁴ Than Pharao sent & called Ioseph. And they made him haste out of preison. And he shaued him self and chaunged his rayment, and went in to Pharao. ¹⁵ And Pharao sayde vnto Ioseph: I haue dreamed a dreame & no man can interpretate it, but I haue herde say of the that as sone as thou hearest a dreame thou dost interpretate it. ¹⁶ And Ioseph answered Pharao saying: God shal geue Pharao an answere of peace without me. ¹⁷ Pharao sayd vnto Ioseph: in my dreame me thought I stode by a ryuers syde, ¹⁸ and there cam out of the ryuer .vij. fat fleshed and well fauored kyne, and fedde in the meddow. ¹⁹ And then .vij. other kyne came vp after them, poore & very euell fauored & leane fleshed: so that I neuer sawe their lyke in all the lande of Egypte in euell fauordnesse. ²⁰ And the .vij. leane and euel fauored kyne eate vp the fyrste .vij. fat kyne. ²¹ And when they had eaten them vp a man coulde not perceyue that they had eaten them: for they were styll as euyll fauored as they were at the begynnyng. And I awoke. ²² And I sawe agayn in my dreame .vij. eares spring out of one stalke ful and good, ²³ and .vij. other eares wytherd, thynne an blasted wt wynde, sprynge vp after them. ²⁴ And the thynne eares deuowred the .vij. good eares. And I haue tolde it vnto the sothsayers, but no man can tell me what it meaneth. ²⁵ Then Ioseph sayde vnto Pharao: both Pharaos dreames are one. And God doth shewe Pharao what he is aboute to do. ²⁶ The seuen good kyne are .vij. yeres: & the seuen good eares: are seuen yeres also, and it is but one dreame. ²⁷ Likewyse the seuen thynne and euel fauored kyne that came out after them, are seuen yeres: and the .vij. emptye and blasted eares shalbe .vij. yeres of hunger. ²⁸ This is that whiche I sayde vnto Pharao, that god doth shewe Pharao what he is about to do. ²⁹ Beholde there shal come .vij. yere of great plenteousnes through oute all the lande of Egypte. ³⁰ And there shal aryse after them .vij. yeres of hunger. So that al the plenteousnes shalbe forgotten in the lande of Egypt. And the hunger shall consume the lande: ³¹ so that the plenteousnes shall not be once a sene in the lande by reason of that hunger that shall come after, for it shalbe exceadynge greate. ³² And as concernynge that the dreame was doubled vnto Pharao the seconde tyme, it betokeneth that the thynges is certanly prepared of God, and that God wyll shortlye brynge it to passe. ³³ Nowe therfore let Pharao prouyde for a man of vnderstandyng & wysdome, and set him ouer the land of Egypte. ³⁴ And let Pharao make offycers ouer the lande, & take vp the fyfte parte of the lande of Egypte in the .vij. plenteous yeres ³⁵ & let them gather all the foode of these good yeres that come, and lay vp corne vnder the power of Pharao, that there may be foode in the cyties, ³⁶ and there let them kepe it: that there maye be foode in stoore in the lande, agaynste the .vij. yeres of hunger whych shal come in the land of Egypte, and that the land perysh not thorow hunger.

¹² And vnto me was the worde hydde, and myne eare hathe receyued a lytell therof. ¹³ In the phantasyes and thoughtes of the vysyons of the nyght, when slepe cometh on men:

¹⁵ In dreames and visyons of the nyght season (when slombring commeth vpon men, that they fall a slepe in theyr beddes)

¹⁴ He suffered no man to hurt them, but reproued euen kynges for their sakes.

¹⁴ Agayne, yf I saye vnto the wycked: thou shalt surely dye: and so he turne from hys synnes, and do the thinge that is lawfull and ryght: ¹⁵ In so moch that the same wicked man geueth the pledge agayne, restoreth that he had taken awaye by robbery, walcketh in the commaundementes of lyfe, & doth no wronge: Then shall he surely lyue, and not dye.

⁴ And Ionas wente to, and entred in to the cytie: euen a dayes iourney, & cryed, sayenge: There are yet .xl. dayes and then shall Niniue be ouerthrowen.

²⁰ While he thus thought, behold the Aungel of the Lord appered vnto him in a dreame, sainge: Ioseph thou sonne of Dauid. fear not to take vnto the Mary thy wife. For that which is conceyued in her is of the holye Ghost.

¹² And after they were warned of God in a dreame, that they should not go agayne to Herode, they retourned into their owne countre another waye. ¹³ When they were departed: Beholde the aungell of the Lorde appeared to Ioseph in a dreame sayinge. Aryse, and take the chylde & his mother, and flee into Egipte, and abyde there tyll I bringe the worde. For Herode wil seke the chylde to destroye him.

¹⁹ When he was set doune to geue iudgement hys wyfe sent to hym saying: haue thou nothing to do with that iust man. For I haue suffered manye thynges thys daye in a dreame about hym.

²³ & drewe nere and sayde. Wylt thou destroy the rightwes wt the wyked? ²⁴ If there be .l. ryghtwes wyth in the cyte, wylt thou destroy it & not spare the place for the sake of .l. rightwes that are therin? ²⁵ That be farre from the, that thou shuldest do after this maner, to sley the rightwes wt the wicked, & that the rightwes shuld be as the wicked: that be farre from the. Shulde not the iudge of all the worlde do acordynge to ryghte?

²⁴ Than the Lorde rayned vpon Sodome and Gomorra, brymstone and fyre from the Lord out of heauen,

⁶ And God sayde vnto hym in a dreame. I wot it wel that thou dyddest it in the purenesse of thy herte. And therfore I kepte the that thou shouldest not synne agaynst me, nether suffred I the to come nygh her.

¹⁷ And so Abraham prayd vnto God, & god healed Abimelech and his wyfe and his maydens, so that they bare chyldren. ¹⁸ For the lord had closed to, all the matryces of the house of Abimelech, because of Sara Abrahams wyfe.

¹¹ And how much more ought I so to deale with weked men that haue slayne a ryghtuouse person in hys owne house vpon hys bed. Now therfore thynke ye that I wyll not requyre hys bloude of youre handes and take you from the earth?

¹⁷ And Dauid said vnto God: Is it not I that commaunded to nombre the people? And I am he that haue sinned and done euyl in deade. But what haue these shepe done? let thyne hande therfore O Lorde God, be on me and on my fathers house, and not on thy people to destroye them.

²² The myghtye God Iehouah he knoweth, and Israel shall knowe yf it be to rebelle or transgresse agaynste the Lorde, then the Lorde saue vs not thys daye.

⁴ And yf thou wylte walcke before me, as Dauid thy father walcked, in purenesse of herte & playnesse, to do all that I haue commaunded the, and shalt kepe myne ordynaunces & customes:

³ Oh Lorde, remembre yet howe I haue walked before the truly and with a perfect herte, and haue done that whyche is good in thy sighte, and wepte a great pace.

¹⁷ I wote my God, that thou prouest the herte, and hast pleasure in playnesse. And in playnesse of myne herte I haue wyllynglye geuen all thys. And now I se thy people whiche are here in gladnesse, to offer wyllyngly to the.

⁹ I am clene withoute any faute, I am innocente, & there is no wyckednesse in me,

⁸ The Lord is iudge ouer the people: auenge me then (O Lord) accordynge to my ryghtuousnes and innocency.

⁴ Euen he that hath innocent handes and a cleane hert: which lifteth not vp his minde vnto vanite, and sweareth not to disceaue.

²¹ Let inocencye and ryghtuous dealynge walie vpon me, for my hope is in the.

⁶ I wash my handes with innocencye, O Lorde, and so go I to thyne alter.

¹³ Shoulde I then clense my herte in vayne (thougt I) and washe my handes in innocency?

⁷² So he fedde them wyth a fayethfull and true herte, and ruled them wyth diligence of of his power.

³ The innocente dealyng of the iust shal leade them, but the vnfaithfulnesse of the despisers shalbe their owne destruccion

⁷ Who so leadeth a godly and an innocent lyfe, happy shal his chyldren be whome he leaueth behynde hym.

²² My God hath sent his aungell whiche hath shut the lyons mouthes, so that they might not hurte me. For why? myne vngiltinesse is founde oute before him. And as for the, O Kinge, I neuer offended the.

¹² Oure reioysinge is this, the testimony of oure conscience, that in synglenes and Godly purenes, and not in fleshely wysdome, but by the grace of God, we haue had oure conuersation in the worlde, and moste of all to youwardes.

¹⁰ Ye are wytnesses, and so is God, howe holily and iustlye and vnblameably we behaued our selues among you that beleue

¹³ when before I was a blasphemer and persecuter, and a tyraunte. But I obtayned mercye, because I dyd it ignorauntly thorowe vnbelefe.

³ but of the frute of the tree that is in the myddes of the garden (sayd God) se that ye eate not, & se that ye touch it not, lest ye dye.

¹⁸ For the lord had closed to, all the matryces of the house of Abimelech, because of Sara Abrahams wyfe.

¹¹ Than Abimelech charged all his people, saying: he that toucheth this man or his wyfe, shall suerlie dye for it.

⁷ And your father hath deceyued me, & chaunged mi wages .x. times: but God suffred him not to hurt me.

⁵ And they departed. And the feare of God fel vpon the cities that were rounde aboute them, that they durste not folowe after the sonnes of Iacob.

⁹ He him selfe is not greater in the house than I, and hath kepte nothyng from me, but only the because thou art hys wyfe. How than can I do thys great wykydnes, for to synne agaynst God?

²⁴ for I wyll caste out the nations before the & wyll enlarge thy costes, so that no man shall desyre thy lande whylse thou goest vp to appeare before the face of the Lorde thy God, thryse in the yeare.

² when a soule synneth and trespaceth agaynste the Lorde, and denyeth vnto hys neyghboure that whyche was taken hym to keepe, or that was putte vnder hys hande, or that whych he hath violently taken away, or that which he hath deceaued his neighbour of wt soteltie,

²⁶ And nowe my lord as sure as the lorde lyueth and as thy soule lyueth, the Lorde hathe witholden the from commyng to shede bloud and from aduenging thy self with thine own hande. Forthermore I praye God that thyne enemies and they that entende to do my Lord euyl, may be as Nabal.

³⁴ For in very dede as sure as the Lorde God of Israel liueth whiche hath kept me backe from hurting the, excepte thou haddest hasted and met me, there hath not bene lefte Nabal by the dauninge of the daye, a pysser against the wall.

⁴ Agaynst the only, agaynst the haue I sinned, & done euel in thy sight: that thou mightest be iustified in thy saynges, and shouldest ouercome when thou art iudged.

¹² So I gaue them vp vnto their owne hertes luste, and let them folowe theyr owne ymaginacions.

¹¹ For the Lord God is a light and defence, the Lorde wyll geue grace and worshyppe, and no good thynge shall he wytholde from them that lyue a godly lyfe.

¹ The kinges hert is in the hand of the Lord, lyke as are the ryuers of water: he maye turne it whether so euer he wyll.

⁶ But I wyll hedge her awaye wyth thornes, and stoppe it that she shall not fynde her fotesteppes: ⁷ and thoughe she runne after her louers, yet shall she not get them: she shall seke them, but not fynde them. Then shall she saye: wel I wyll go turne agayne to my firste housbande, for at that tyme was I better at ease, then nowe.

¹ As concerninge, wherof ye wrote vnto me, it is good for a man, not to touche a woman.

¹⁷ Wherfore come out from among them, and separate youre selues (sayeth the Lorde) and touche none vncleane thynge: so wyll I receyue you,

⁷ For the mysterye of that iniquitie doeth he al ready work whiche onelye loketh vntyll it be taken out of the waye.

¹¹ And therfore God shall sende them stronge delusyon, that they shoulde beleue lyes:

¹⁷ But of the tree of knowledge of good & bad se that thou eate not: For euen the same daye thou eatest of it thou shalt dye the dethe.

¹⁷ But God plaged Pharao, and his house wt greate plages, bycause of Sarai Abrams wyfe.

¹⁶ And he shal be thy spokesman vnto the people he shall be thy mouth, & thou shalt be hys God:

¹ And the lord said vnto Moses: behold I haue made the Pharaos God, & Aaron thy brother shalbe thy prophete.

¹ And the lord spake vnto Moses & Aaron in the lande of Egipt saying: ² This moneth shal be your chiefe moneth: euen of the fyrst moneth of the yeare shal it be vnto you. ³ Speake ye vnto all the felowshyp of Israell saying: That they take the .x. day of thys moneth to euery houshold a shepe.

⁴ Then when he hath synned or trespaced, he shall restore agayne that he toke violently awaye, or the wrong which he dyd, or that whych was deliuered him to kepe, or the lost thyng whiche he found,

⁷ And the prieste shall make an attonemente for hym before the Lorde, and it shall be forgeuen hym, in whatsoeuer thynge it be that a man doth & trespaceth therin.

³² and the earth opened hyr mouth and swalowed them and theyr houses, and al menne that were wyth Corah and al theyr goodes. ³³ And they and all that pertained vnto them, went downe aliue vnto hell, and the earth closed vppon theim and they peryshed from amonge the congregation.

⁵ Then sayd Samuel: gather al Israel to Mazphah, that I maye pray for you vnto the Lorde.

⁸ & sayd to Samuel: cease not to crye vnto the Lorde oure God for vs, that he maye saue vs out of the handes of the Philistines.

¹⁹ Then sayde all the people vnto Samuel: praye for thy seruauntes vnto the Lorde thy God, that we dye not: for we haue synned in askyng vs a kynge, besyde all the synnes that euer we dyd.

²³ Moreouer God forbydde that I shulde synne agaynste the Lorde in leuyng praiyng for you and to shewe you the good and ryghte way.

¹⁷ Then spake Dauid vnto the Lorde, when he sawe the Aungel that smote the people, and sayde: lo, it is I that haue synned, and I that haue done wickedly. But these shepe what haue they done? let I praye the thyne hande be on me, and on my fathers house.

⁶ And the kyng aunswered and sayd vnto the man of God: Oh pray vnto the Lorde thy God, & make intercession for me, that my hand maye be restored me agayne. And the man of God besought the Lord and hys hande came to hym agayne as well as before.

¹ And at the last the worde of the Lorde came to Eliah the thyrde yeare sayinge: go, shewe thy self vnto Ahab, that I may sende raine vpon the earthe. ² And Eliah went to shew him self vnto Ahab for there was a great famishement in Samaria. ³ Wherfore Ahab called Abdiah the gouerner of hys house: whyche Abdiah feared God greatlye: ⁴ in so muche that when Iezabel destroyed the Prophetes of the Lorde, he toke an hundred of the Prophetes and hyd them, fyftye in one caue, and fyftye in another, and prouyded breade and water for them. ⁵ And Ahab sayde vnto Abdiah: walke thorow the lande, vnto al fountaynes of water and vnto all brokes, to se whether any grasse maye be founde, that we maye saue the horses and the Mules, that we destroye not the beastes. ⁶ And they deuyded the lande betwene them to walke thorow it. Ahab went one way by hym selfe, and Abdiah went another by hym selfe. ⁷ And it chaunced as Abdiah went in the waye that Eliah met him. And Abdiah knew hym and fell on his face and sayde: arte not thou my Lorde Eliah. ⁸ And he said vnto him: I am he. Go, and tel Ahab that Eliah is here. ⁹ And the other answered: what haue I synned that thou wouldest delyuer me into the hande of Ahab, to sley me? ¹⁰ As surely as the Lorde thy God lyueth, there is no nacyon or kyngedome, whether my Lord hath not sent, to seke the. And when they saide thou wast not there he toke an othe of the kyngedome & nacyon, because he founde the not. ¹¹ And now thou sayest: go and tell, thy Lord Eliah is here. ¹² And as sone as I am gone from the, the spyryte of the Lorde shal cary the away, whether I shall not knowe, and then I haue gone and tolde Ahab, and then he can not fynde the, he shall sley me. And yet I thy seruaunt haue feared the Lorde from my younge age. ¹³ Was it not tolde my Lorde, what I dyd, when Iezabel slue the Prophetes of the Lorde how I hydde an hundred of the Lordes Prophetes, fyfty in one caue and as many in another, & prouyded them of breade and water? ¹⁴ And yet now thou sayest, go shewe thy Lorde, that Eliah is here, that he shoulde sley me. ¹⁵ Then Eliah sayde: as truly as the Lorde of Hostes lyueth, before whom I stande: I wil shewe my selfe vnto hym thys day. ¹⁶ And thervpon Abdiah went to Ahab and told him. And Ahab went agaynst Eliah. ¹⁷ And when Ahab sawe Eliah, he sayd vnto hym: art thou he that troubleth Israel? ¹⁸ And he sayde: it is not I that trouble Israel, but thou and thy fathers house, in that ye haue forsaken the commaundementes of the Lord, and hast folowed Baal. ¹⁹ But now sende and gather to me all Israel vnto mount Carmel and the Prophetes of Baal foure hundred and fyfty, and the Prophetes of the groues four hundred, which eate of Iezabels table. ²⁰ And Ahab sent for all the children of Israel and gathered the prophetes vnto mount Carmel. ²¹ And Eliah came vnto all the people and sayde: why halte ye betwene two opinions? Yf the Lorde be very God, folowe him: or yf Baal be he, then folowe hym. And the people answered him not one worde. ²² Then sayde Eliah vnto the people: I only remayne of the Lordes Prophetes, & Baals Prophetes are foure hundred and fyftye. ²³ Let two oxen be geuen vs, and let them chose the one and cutte hym in peces and lay him on wood, and put no fyre vnder. And I wyll dresse the other & put him on wood, and wil put no fyre vnder. ²⁴ And call ye on the name of youre God, and I wil cal on the name of the Lorde. And then the God that answereth by fyre, he is the very God. And al the people sayde: it is wel spoken. ²⁵ Then sayde Eliah vnto the Prophetes of Baal: chose you an oxe and dresse him fyrst (for ye are many) and call on the name of youre God, but put no fyre vnder. ²⁶ And they toke the oxe that was geuen them and dressed it, and called on the name of Baal from mournynge to none sayinge: O Baal heare vs. But there was no voyce nor answere. And they lepte aboute the aulter that they had made. ²⁷ And at none Eliah mocked them and sayd: call loud, (for he is a God: but he is talking or occupied or in the waye, or happely he slepeth) that he may awake. ²⁸ And they cryed loud, and cut them selues, as their maner was, wyth knyues & launcers, tyl the bloude folowed on them. ²⁹ And when midday was passed, they prophesyed vntil it was time to offer. But there was neyther voyce nor answere nor any that regarded them. ³⁰ Then Eliah sayde to all the folke: come to me. And all the people came to hym. And he mended the aulter of the Lorde that was broken. ³¹ And he toke .xij. stones accordynge to the nombre of the .xij. trybes of the sonnes of Iacob, vnto whom the word of the lord came sayinge: Israel shalbe thy name. ³² And wyth the stones he made an aultare in the name of the Lord. And he made a gutter round about the aulter, able to receyue two peckes of corne. ³³ And he put the wood in order, and hewed the oxe in peces, and put hym on the wood, and sayde: fyl foure pytchers with water, and powre it on the sacrifice and on the wood. ³⁴ And he said: do so againe. And they dyd so againe. Then he sayde: do it the thyrde tyme. And they dyd so the thirde tyme. ³⁵ And the water ranne round about the aultare, and the gutter was full of water also. ³⁶ And when offeringe time was come, Eliah the prophete went to and sayde: Lord God of Abraham, Isaac and of Israel, let it be knowen thys daye, that thou art the God in Israel, and that I am thy seruaunt, and that I do al these thinges at thy commaundement. ³⁷ Heare me O lorde, heare me, that this people may know, that thou lord, art the God, and that thou hast turned their hertes backward. ³⁸ And there fell fire from the Lorde, and consumed the sacryfice & the wood and the stones & the dust, & lycked vp the water that was in the gutter. ³⁹ And when all the people sawe that, they fel on theyr faces & sayde: the Lorde he is God, the lord he is God. ⁴⁰ Then sayd Eliah vnto them: lay handes on the Prophetes of Baal, let not one of them escape. And when they had taken them, Eliah brought them doune vnto the broke of Kison, and slue them there. ⁴¹ Then Eliah sayde vnto Ahab, get the vp, and eate and dryncke, for ther is a sound of muche rayne. ⁴² And when Ahab went vp to eate & to dryncke, Eliah went vp to the toppe of mount Carmel. And bowed hym selfe to the earthe, & put hys face betwene hys knees, ⁴³ and sayd to hys seruaunt: go vp and loke towarde the sea. And he went vp and loked, and saide: here is nothing. And he sayd: go agayn .vij. tymes. ⁴⁴ And the seuenth time he sayde: beholde, there aryseth a lytle cloude out of the sea, lyke the palme of a mannes hande. Then he sayde: go and saye to Ahab, put the horsses in the charet, and get the doune that the rayne stoppe the not. ⁴⁵ And within a lytle whyle, heauen was blacke wyth cloudes and winde, and there was a great rayne. And Ahab rode and went to Iezrahel. ⁴⁶ And the hande of the Lorde was on Eliah, and he gyrdled vp hys loynes and ranne before Ahab, tyl they came to Iezrahel.

¹¹ And Naaman was wroth and went away, & sayde: Beholde, I thought in my self, he would haue come out, & stand & cal on the name of the Lorde hys God, and put hys hande on the place of the disease, and so take awaye the leprosye.

² Forthermore he sent Eliakim stuard of houshold and Sobnah the scribe, and the elders of the priestes clothed in sack, to Isaiah the Prophet the sonne of Amos. ³ And they sayde to hym: thus sayth Hezekiah: thys daye is a daye of trybulacyon, rebukinge and raylynge. Euen as when the chyldren are readye to be borne and the mothers haue no power to be delyuered. ⁴ Oh that the Lorde thy God would heare al the wordes of Rabsakeh whom the kynge of Assiria hys mayster hathe sent to rayle on the lyuynge God, and to rebuke hym wyth wordes which the Lord thy God hath heard. Wherfore lyfte vp thy prayer for the remnaunt that are lefte.

²² Touch not myne anoynted, nor do my Prophetes any harme.

¹⁹ Vngodly men are ye. He hath none respecte vnto the personnes of the lordlye, and regardeth not the ryche more then pore. For they be al the worcke of hys handes.

⁸ Therfore take .vij. oxen & .vij. rammes, and go to my seruaunte Iob: offre vp also for your selues a brentofferynge: & let my seruaunte Iob praye for you. Hym wyll I accepte, & not deale with you after youre folishnesse: in that ye haue not spoken the thynge whiche is right, like as my seruaunt Iob hath done.

¹⁴ The secrete of the Lorde is amonge them that feare him, and he sheweth them hys couenaunt.

⁹ Yea the couenant that he made with Abraham, and the oth that, he sware vnto Isaac, ¹⁰ And appoynted the same vnto Iacob for a lawe, and to Israell for an euerlastynge testamente. ¹¹ Sayenge: vnto the wyl I geue the land of Canaan, the lot of your heritage. ¹² When there was yet but a fewe of them, and the straungers therin. ¹³ What tyme as they wente from one nacyon to another, from one kyngedome to another. ¹⁴ He suffered no man to hurt them, but reproued euen kynges for their sakes. ¹⁵ Touch not myne anoynted, do my prophetes no harme.

¹¹ Yee euen thus sayde the Lorde vnto me: Thou shalt not praye to do this people good.

¹ Then spake the Lorde vnto me, & sayde: Though Moses and Samuel stode before me, yet haue I no herte to thys people. Dryue them awaye, that they maye go out of my syght.

¹⁸ But yf they be true Prophetes in very dede, and yf the worde of the Lorde be commytted vnto them, then let them praye the Lord of Hoostes, that the remnaunte of the ornamentes (whiche are in the house of the Lorde, and remayne yet in the house of the King of Iuda and at Ierusalem) be not caryed to Babylon also.

¹⁸ If I sayde vnto the, concernynge the vngodly man: that (wythout doute) he muste dye, and thou geuest hym not warnynge, ner speakest vnto hym, that he maye turne from hys euell waye, and so to lyue: Then shalll the same vngodly man dye in hys owne vnryghtuousnes: but hys bloude wyll I requyre of thyne hande.

⁸ If I say vnto the wicked thou wycked, thou shalte surelye dye: & thou geuest hym not warnynge, that he maye bewarre of his vngodly waye: then shall the wicked dye in hys owne synne, but hys bloude wyll I requyre of thy hand.

¹⁴ Agayne, yf I saye vnto the wycked: thou shalt surely dye: and so he turne from hys synnes, and do the thinge that is lawfull and ryght: ¹⁵ In so moch that the same wicked man geueth the pledge agayne, restoreth that he had taken awaye by robbery, walcketh in the commaundementes of lyfe, & doth no wronge: Then shall he surely lyue, and not dye. ¹⁶ Yee the synnes that he hath done shall neuer be thought vpon: For in so moch as he doth now the thinge that is lawfull and ryght, he shall lyue.

⁴ He that speaketh wyth tounges profyteth hym selfe: he that prophecieth edifyeth the congregation.

¹ God in tyme paste diuerselye and manye wayes, spake vnto the fathers by Prophetes,

⁴ Let wedlocke be had in pryce in all poyntes, and let the chambre be vndefyled: for whorekepers and aduouterers God wyll iudge.

¹⁴ Yf anye be deseased amonge you, let hym call for the elders of the congregacyon, and let them praye ouer him, and annoynte hym wyt oyle in the name of the Lord ¹⁵ and the prayer of fayth shall saue the sicke, & the Lorde shall rayse hym vp: and yf he haue commytted synnes, they shalbe forgeuen him. ¹⁶ Knoweledge youre fautes one to another; and praye one for another, that ye maye be healed. The prayer of a ryghtuous man auayleth muche yf it be feruente.

¹⁶ If any man se his brother synne a synne that is not vnto death, let him axe, and he shal geue him lyfe, for them that synne not vnto death. There is a synne vnto death, for which saye I not that a man shoulde praye.

⁵ And yf any man wyl hurte them, fire shal proceade out of theyr mouthes, and consume theyr enemyes. And yf anye man wyll hurte them this wyse muste he be killed. ⁶ These haue power to shut heauen, that it rayne not in the daies of they: Prophesiyng, and haue power ouer waters to turne them to bloud, and to smyte the earth wyth al maner plages, as often as they will.

¹⁸ Then Pharao called Abram & sayed: Whi hast thou thus dealt wt me? Wherfore toldest thou me not that she was thy wyfe?

¹⁰ Then sayd Abimelech: why haste thou done this vnto vs? one of the people myghte lyghtlye haue lyne by thy wife, and so shuldest thou haue brought synne vpon vs.

⁷ And the sonnes of Iacob came out of the field as sone as they heard it, for it greued them, & thei were not a little wroth bycause he had wroughte folly in Israel, in that he had lyed wt Iacobs doughter, whyche thynge oughte not to be done.

²⁴ And it came to passe that after .iij. monethes, one tolde Iuda sayinge: Thamar thy daughter in lawe hath played the whoore, & wyth playinge the whoore is become greate wt chylde.

²¹ And than Moses sayde vnto Aaron: what dyd thys people vnto the that thou haste broughte so great a synne vpon them.

³⁵ And the Lord plaged the people, because they made the calf whych Aaron made.

¹⁰ He that breaketh wedlocke with another mans wyfe shall dye for it, because he hath broke wedlocke with his neighbours wyfe, and so shall she lykewyse.

²⁵ And Iosua sayde: In as muche as thou hast troubled vs, the Lorde shal trouble the thys daye. And all Israell stoned hym wyth stones, and burnt them wyth fyre, and ouerwhelmed them wyth stones.

¹⁸ And he saide therto: wherfore doth my Lorde persecute hys seruaunt? for what haue I done? or what euil is in myne hande. ¹⁹ Now heare therfore (my lord king) the wordes of thy seruaunt Yf the lorde haue stered the vp against me, he shal smel the sauoure of sacryfyce. But & yf they be the children of men, cursed be they before the Lorde. For they haue cast me out from abyding in the enheritaunce of the Lorde, saying: hence & go serue other Goddes.

⁵ And Dauid was exceding wroth with the man, and sayde to Nathan: as surely as the Lorde lyueth the felowe that hathe done thys thynge, is the chylde of death

¹⁰ Now therfore the swerd shal neuer depart from thyne house, because (saythe the Lorde) thou hast despysed me, and taken the wyfe of Vrias the Aethite, to be thy wyfe. ¹¹ Thus saith the Lorde: beholde I wyl stere vp euyl against the euen of thyne owne house & wyll take thy wyues before thyne eyes, and geue them vnto thy neyghboure, which shal slepe with them in the syght of the sonne.

¹² And she aunswered him: naye, my brother do not force me, for it ought not to be so in Israel do not this follye.

¹⁰ Who so leadeth the ryghtuous into an euel waye, shal fal into his owne pit, but, the iust shall haue the good in possession.

¹¹ For ther is no parcialitie with God. But whosoeuer hath synned without lawe,

¹¹ whose mouthes must be stopped: whiche peruerte whole houses teachynge thynges whiche they oughte not because of fylthy lucre.

¹² It wyll come to passe therfore when the Egyptyans se the, that they wyll saye: she is hys wyfe. And so shall they sley me and saue the.

¹² And he sayde: laye not thy handes vpon the chylde, nether do any thyng at all vnto him, for now I know that thou fearest God, in that thou hast not kepte thyne only sonne from me.

¹⁸ And Ioseph said vnto them the thyrd day: Thys do and lyue, for I feare God.

¹⁵ For the olde capytaynes that were before me, had bene chargeable vnto the people, and had taken of them bread and wyne, and fourtye sycles of syluer: yea and theyr seruauntes had oppressed the people. But so dyd not I, and that because of the feare of God.

¹ In the lande of Nus there was a man called Iob: an innocent & vertuous man, soche one as feared God exchued euell.

²⁸ And vnto man he sayde: Beholde, to feare the Lorde, is wisedom, and to forsake euil, is vnderstandinge.

⁴ How can they haue vnderstandinge, that worke mischiefe, eatynge vp my people, as it were bread, & call not vpon the Lord?

¹ To the chaunter, of Dauid the seruaunt of the Lorde. My hert sheweth me the wickednesse of the vngodly, that there is no feare of God before hys eyes. ² For he dissembleth before his face, so longe tyll hys abhominable sinne be founde out. ³ The woordes of hys mouth are vnrighteousnes and disceate, he will not be learned to do good. ⁴ He ymagineth mischief vpon his bedde he wil come in no good waye, nor refuse the thyng that is euel.

⁷ The feare of the Lord is the begynnynge of wysdome. But fooles despise wysdome & destruccion.

⁵ then shalt thou vnderstande the feare of the Lord, & fynde the knowlege of God.

¹³ With me is the feare of the Lorde, and the eschuyng of euell. As for pryde, dysdayne, & euell waye, & a mouth that speaketh wicked thinges, I vtterly abhorre them.

⁶ With louyng mercye and fayethfulnesse synnes be forgeuen, and who so feareth the Lorde, he eschueth euell.

¹⁸ There is no feare of God before theyr eyes.

²⁹ And Abram and Nahor toke them wyues. Abrams wyfe was called Sarai. And Nahors wyfe Mylca, the doughter of Haran whyche was father of Milca, & of Iesca.

¹³ Saye I pray the therfore that thou arte my sister that I maye fare the better by reason of the, and that my soule may lyue for thy sake.

²² Absteyne from all suspicious thinges.

¹ Then the Lorde sayed vnto Abram. Get the out of thy contrye and frome thy kyndred, and oute of thy fathers house, into a Lande whyche I wyll shewe the.

⁹ And then Abram departed and toke hys iourney southwarde.

¹¹ And when he was come nye for to enter into Egypte, he sayed vnto Sarai hys wyfe. Behold, I knowe that thou art a fayre woman to loke vpon. ¹² It wyll come to passe therfore when the Egyptyans se the, that they wyll saye: she is hys wyfe. And so shall they sley me and saue the. ¹³ Saye I pray the therfore that thou arte my sister that I maye fare the better by reason of the, and that my soule may lyue for thy sake. ¹⁴ As soone as he came into Egypte, the Egypsians saw the woman that she was very fayre. ¹⁵ And Pharaos Lodres sawe hir also, & praysed hyr vnto Pharao: So that she was taken into Pharaos house, ¹⁶ which entreated Abram wel for hir sake, so that he had shepe oxen, & he Asses, men seruauntes, mayd seruantes, she asses, and camels. ¹⁷ But God plaged Pharao, and his house wt greate plages, bycause of Sarai Abrams wyfe. ¹⁸ Then Pharao called Abram & sayed: Whi hast thou thus dealt wt me? Wherfore toldest thou me not that she was thy wyfe? ¹⁹ Why saydest thou, that she was thy sister, & causedeste me to take hyr to my wyfe? But nowe loo, there is thy wyfe, take hyr and be walkynge. ²⁰ Pharao also gaue a charge vnto his menne ouer Abram, to leade hym oute, with hys wyfe, and all that he had.

²¹ Then sayd Saul: Blessed are ye in the Lorde: for ye haue compassion on me.

⁵ They haue deuysed myschefe, and communed amonge them selues, how they may laye snares: tush (saye they) who shall se them?

⁹ Then saied Peter vnto her: why haue ye agreed together to tempte the spiryte of the Lorde? Beholde, the fete of them whiche haue buried thy husbande, are at the dore, and shal cary the out.

³ & saied to him: come oute of thy countrey & from thy kynred, and come into the lande, whiche I shall shewe the. ⁴ Then came he out of the lande of Chaldey, and dwelt in Charran. And after that assone as his father was dead he brought him into thys lande, in whiche ye now dwell, ⁵ and he gaue him none inheritaunce in it, no not the bredeth of a fote: but promised that he would geue it to hym to possesse, and to his seed after him, when as yet he had no chylde.

⁸ By fayth Abraham, when he was called obeyed, to go out into a place, which he shoulde afterward receyue to inherytaunce, and he wente oute not knowynge whyther he should go.

¹⁶ which entreated Abram wel for hir sake, so that he had shepe oxen, & he Asses, men seruauntes, mayd seruantes, she asses, and camels.

² And Abraham sayde of Sara hys wyfe that she was hys syster. Than Abimelech kyng of Gerar sent and set Sara away.

¹¹ And Abraham answered: I thought that peraduenture the feare of God was not in thys place, & that they shulde sley me for my wyfes sake:

⁹ Is not al the whole land before the? Departe I praye the fro me. If thou wilte take the lyfte hande, I wyll take the ryght: or if thou take the ryght hand I wyll take the lyfte.

¹⁰ & dwel with vs & the land shal be at your pleasure, dwel & do your busines, & haue your possessions therein.

⁶ The land of Egypt is open before the: In the best place of the lande make both thy father & thy brethren dwell: And euen in the lande of Gosan let them dwell. Moreouer yf thou knowe any men of actiuyte amonge them, make them ruelars ouer my catell.

⁵ sayde not he vnto me, that she was hys syster? yea and sayde not she herself that he was her brother? wyth a pure herte and innocent handes haue I done thys.

⁶⁵ & sayd vnto the seruaunt: what man is this that cometh against vs in the feld? And the seruaunt sayd: it is my master. And then she toke hyr mantil, & put it about hyr.

³ And Ioab answered: the Lord make thy people an hundred tymes so many mo as they be. But my lord king, are they not al my lordes seruauntes: why then doth my lord requyre this thing? why shoulde my Lorde be a cause of trespace to Israel? ⁴ Neuerthelater the kynges wordes preuailed agaynst Ioab. And Ioab toke his waye. And went thorow oute all Israel, and came to Ierusalem, ⁵ and gaue the nombre of the counte of the people vnto Dauid. And al Israel were in nombre a thousand thousande, and an hundred thousande men that drewe swerde: and Iuda was .cccc.lxx. thousand men that drewe swerde. ⁶ But the Leuites and Beniamin he counted not amonge them. For the kynges deade semed abominable to Ioab.

⁸ Reproue not a scorner, lest he owe the euel wil: but rebuke a wise man, & he wil loue the. ⁹ Geue a discrete man but an occasion, & he wilbe the wiser, teache a righteous man, and he will increase.

¹ Who so loueth wysdome, wil be content to be refourmed: but he that hateth to be reproued, is a foole.

¹² The correction of the wise is to an obedient eare, a golden cheine & a Iewel of gold.

⁵ An open rebuke is beter then a secrete loue.

⁶ So the master of the shyppe came to hym and sayde vnto hym: why slomberest thou? Vp, call vpon thy God: yf God (happely) wil thyncke vpon vs, that we peryshe not.

¹⁹ As manye as I loue, I rebuke and chastes. Be feruent therfore and repente.

³¹ When the Lord sawe that Lea was despised he made hyr fruitful: but Rahel was baren.

¹¹ Then they sent and fette all the Lordes of the Philistines vnto them, and sayde: sende awaye the arcke of the God of Israel, and let it go home agayne vnto hys owne place, that it slee vs not wyth our people. For there was a plage of death thorowout all the cytye, and the hand of God was excedyng sore there, ¹² in so much that they which dyed not, were smiten with the Emerades: so that the crye of the cytye went vp to heauen.

¹⁰ that they maye offre swete sauoures vnto the God of heauen, and praye for the kinges lyfe & for his children.

⁹ So Elephas the Themanite, Baldad the Suhyte & Sophar the Naamathite went their waye, and dyd accordynge as the Lorde commaunded them. The Lorde also accepted the personne of Iob, ¹⁰ and the Lorde turned hym vnto Iob, when he prayed for his frendes. Yea the Lorde gaue Iob twyse as muche as he had a fore.

⁸ The Lorde aborreth the sacryfyce of the vngodlye, but the prayer of the rightuous is acceptable vnto hym.

²⁹ The Lorde is farre from the vngodly, but he heareth the praier of the rightuous.

¹¹ Thus sayeth the Lorde, euen the holy one & maker of Israel: Aske me of thynges for to come, concernynge my sonnes: and put me in remembraunce, as touchyng the worckes of my handes:

⁷ Axe and it shalbe geuen you. Seke and ye shall fynde. Knocke & it shalbe opened vnto you.

²² And whatsoeuer ye shall axe in prayer (yf ye beleue) ye shall receyue it.

²⁴ Also all the Prophetes from Samuel and thence forth, as manye as haue spoken, haue in lykewyse tolde of these dayes.

⁶ Be not carefull: but in all thinges shewe your petition vnto God in prayer and supplication, wyth geuinge of thankes.

²⁵ Brethren, praye for vs.

¹⁶ Knoweledge youre fautes one to another; and praye one for another, that ye maye be healed. The prayer of a ryghtuous man auayleth muche yf it be feruente.

² Wherfore she sayd vnto Abram: Beholde the Lord hath closed me, that I can not bere. I praye the go in vnto my mayde, peraduenture I shal be multiplyed by meanes of her. And Abram heard the voyce of Sarai.
