¹ After these deades, tydynges were brought vnto Ioseph, that his father was sycke. And he toke with him his two sonnes, Manasses & Ephraim. ² Then was it sayde vnto Iacob: beholde, thy sonne Ioseph commeth vnto the. ⁴⁶ drewe vnto the summe of syxe hundred and three thousand, fyue hundred and fyfty.

¹⁸ On the weste syde the standarte and the host of Ephraim shal lye with their companyes. And the captayne ouer the sonnes of Ephraim Elisama the Sonne of Amihud: ¹⁹ & hys hoste and the numbre of theym .xl. thousand and .v. hundred. ²⁰ And faste by hym, the trybe of Manasse, and the captayne ouer the Sonnes of Manasse, Gamaleel the sonne of PedaZur ²¹ and hys hoste, and the numbre of theym .xxxij. thousand and two hundred.

⁴⁸ The seuenth daye, Elisama the sonne of Amiud, the chefe Lord of the children of Ephraim, offered.

¹⁰ And bryng the Leuites before the Lorde, and let the chyldren of Israell put their handes vpon the Leuites.

²² Then the standert of the hoste of the chyldren of Ephraim went forth wt their armies whose captayne was Elisama the sonne of Amiud. ²³ And ouer the hoste of the trybe of the sonnes of Manasse, was Gamaliel the sonne of Pedazur.

¹ And the people complayned & it displeased the eares of the Lorde. And when the lord heard it he was wroth, and the fyre of the Lorde burnt amonge them and consumed the vttermost of the hoste.

⁸ In the trybe of Ephraim, Hosea the sonne of Nun.

³⁴ And Balam sayed vnto the aungell of the Lorde: I haue synned for I wist not that thou stodest in the wai against me. Now therfore if it displease thine eyes, I wyl turne agayne.

²⁸ The children of Ioseph in their kinredes were: Manasse and Ephraim, ²⁹ The chyldren of Manasse: Machir, of whom cometh the kynred of the Machirites. And Machir begat Galaad, of whom cometh the kynred of the Galaadites. ³⁰ And these are the chyldren of Galaad: Hieser, of whom cometh the kynred of the Hieserites: and of Helech cometh the kynred of the Helechites: ³¹ and of Asriel the kynred of the Asrielites: and of Sichem cometh the kynred of the Sichemites: ³² and of Simida cometh the kynred of the Simidites: and of Hepher cometh the kynred of the Hepherites. ³³ And Zelaphead the sonne of Hephera had no sonnes but daughters. And the names of the daughters of Zelaphead were Mahela, Noa, Hagla, Milcha and Thirza. ³⁴ These are the kinredes of Manasse, in numbre .lij. thousand & seuen hundred. ³⁵ These are the children of Ephraim in their kynredes: Suthelah, of whom commeth the kynred of the Suthelahites: and Becher, of whom cometh the kinred of the Becherites: & of Thehen cometh the kynred of the Thehenites. ³⁶ And these are the children of Suthelah: Eran, of whom commeth the kinred of the Eranites. ³⁷ These are the kynredes of the chyldren of Ephraim in numbre .xxxij. thousand and .v. hundred. And these are the chyldren of Ioseph in theyr kinredes.

¹ These be the wordes whyche Moses spake vnto all Israel, on the other syde Iordan in the wyldernesse and in the feeldes by the red sea, betwene Pharan and Tophel, Laban, Hazeroth and Disahah ² .xi. dayes iourney from Horeb vnto Cades barne, by the way that leadeth vnto mount Seir. ³ And it fortuned the fyrst daye of the .xi. moneth in the fortieth yere that Moses spake vnto the chyldren of Israel accordinge vnto all that the Lorde hade geuen him in commaundement vnto them ⁴ after that he had smytten Sehon the kynge of the Amorites which dwelt in Hesbon, and Og kinge of Basan which dwelt at Astaroth in Edrai. ⁵ On the other syde Iordan in the lande of Moab, Moses began to declare this lawe saying: ⁶ the Lord oure God spake vnto vs in Horeb saying: Ye haue dwelt long ynough in this mount: ⁷ departe therfore & take youre iourney and go vnto the hilles of the Amorites and vnto all places nye there vnto: both feldes, hylles and dales: and vnto the south & vnto the sea syde in the lande of Canaan, and vnto Libanon: euen vnto the greate ryuer Euphrates. ⁸ Beholde, I haue sett the land before you: goo in therfore & possess the land whiche the Lorde sware vnto youre fathers Abraham, Isaac and Iacob, to geue vnto them and their seade after them. ⁹ And I sayde vnto you the same season: I am not able to beare you my selfe alon ¹⁰ For the Lorde youre God hath multiplyed you: so that ye are this day as the starres of heauen in nombr

And the cause that is to harde for you, bryng vnto me and I will heare it. ¹⁸ And I commaunded you the same ceason, all the thynges whych ye should do. ¹⁹ And then we departed from Horeb and walked thorow all that greate & terrible wyldernesse as ye haue sene alonge by the waye that leadeth vnto the hylles of the Amorites, as the Lord our God commaunded vs, and came to Cades barne. ²⁰ And there I sayd vnto you: Ye are come vnto the hilles of the Amorites, which the Lorde oure God doth geue vnto vs. ²¹ Beholde the Lorde thy God hath set the lande before the, goo vp and conquere it, as the Lord God of thy fathers sayeth vnto the: feare not, nether be discorraged. ²² And then ye came vnto me euery one and said: Let vs sende men before vs, to searche vs out the lande and to brynge vs worde agayne, both what waye we shall go vp by, and vnto what cyties we shall come. ²³ And the sayinge pleased me well and I toke .xij. men of you, of euery trybe one. ²⁴ And they departed and went vp into the hye contrey and came vnto the ryuer Escoll, and serched it oute, ²⁵ and toke of the frute of the lande in their handes and brought it doune vnto vs and brought vs worde agayne and sayde: it is a good land whyche the Lorde oure God doth geue vs. ²⁶ Notwithstandyng yea wold not consente to goo vp, but were dysobedyent vnto the mouth of the Lord your God, ²⁷ and murmured in youre tentes and sayde: because the Lord hateth vs, therfore he hath broughte vs out of the lande of Egypte, to delyuer vs into the handes of the Amorites and to destroye vs. ²⁸ How shall we goo vp? Oure brethren haue discorraged oure hertes sayinge: the people is greater and taller then we, and the cyties are greate and walled euen vp to heauen, & moreouer we haue sene the sonnes of the Enakimes there. ²⁹ And I sayde vnto you: dreade not nor be afrayed of them: ³⁰ The Lord your god which gothe before you, he shall fyghte for you, accordyng to al that he dyd vnto you in Egypt before your eyes ³¹ and in the wyldernesse: as thou hast sene how that the Lorde thy God bare the as a man shoulde beare hys sonne, thorow out all the waye which ye haue gone vntyll ye came vnto this place. ³² And yet for all this sayinge ye dyd not beleue the Lorde your God ³³ which gothe the way before you, to serche you oute a place to pitche your tentes in, in fyre by nyghte, that ye myghte se what way to go and in a cloude by day. ³⁴ And the Lorde heard the voyce of youre wordes and was wroth and sware sayinge, ³⁵ there shall not one of these men of this froward generacion se that good land which I sware to geue vnto your fathers, ³⁶ saue Caleb the sonne of Iephune, he shall se it, and to hym wyl I geue the land which he hath walked in and to his chyldren, because he hath contynually folowed the Lorde. ³⁷ Lykewyse the Lorde was angrye with me for youre sakes saying: thou also shalt not go in thither. ³⁸ But Iosua the sonne of Nun which standeth before the, he shall go in thither. Bolden hym therfore for he shal deuyde the herytage vnto Israell. ³⁹ Moreouer youre chyldren which ye sayd should be a praye, and youre sonnes which knowe nether good nor bad this day, they shal goo in thither & vnto them I wyl geue it, and they shal enioye it. ⁴⁰ But as for you, turne backe & take your iourney into the wildernesse: euen the way to the read sea. ⁴¹ Then ye answered and sayd vnto me: We haue sinned against the Lord: we wyl go vp & fighte, accordyng to al that the Lord our God commaunded vs. And when ye had gyrde on euery man his wepons of warre & were ready to go vp into the hilles, ⁴² the Lorde sayd vnto me: say vnto them, se that ye go not vp & that ye fyghte not, for I am not amonge you: lest ye be plaged before youre enemies. ⁴³ And when I told you ye wold not heare: but disobeyed the mouth of the Lord, & went presumptuously vp into the hylles. ⁴⁴ Then the Amorites which dwelt in those hylles, came out against you and chased you as bees do, and hewed you in Seir, euen vnto Horma. ⁴⁵ And ye came agayne and wepte before the Lord: but the Lord wolde not heare your voice nor geue you audience. ⁴⁶ And so ye abode in Cades a long ceason.

²⁸ Moreouer charge Iosua and courage him & bolden hym. For he shal go ouer before hys people, & he shall deuyde the lande which thou shalt se vnto them.

⁸ And the Lorde he shall go before the and he shall be with the, and wyll not let the go nor forsake the, feare not therfore nor be discomforted.

⁸ When the most hyghest gaue the nations an enheritaunce, & deuided the sonnes of Adam, he put the borders of the nations, fast by the multitude of the children of Israell.

¹ This is the blessing wherwith Moses Goddes man blessed the chyldren of Israel before his deathe,

¹⁷ his beutye is as fyrsteborne oxe and hys hornes as the hornes of an vnycorne. And wyth them he shal push the nations togyther, euen vnto the endes of the world. These are the many thousandes of Ephraim and the thousandes of Manasses.

⁹ And Iosua the sonne of Nun was full of the spirite of wysdome: for Moses had put hys hand vpon hym. And al the chyldren of Israel herkened vnto him & dyd as the Lord commaunded Moses.

⁵ There shall not a man be able to wythstande the all the dayes of thy lyfe. For as I was with Moses, so wyll I be wt the and wyl nether leaue the, nor forsake the.

⁹ Beholde, I haue sayde vnto the, be strong and bolde: neyther feare, nor dreade. For the Lorde thy God is with the whether soeuer thou goest.

⁷ And the Lorde sayd vnto Iosua: This day wyll I begynne to magnifye the, in the syghte of Israell, that they maye knowe howe that as I was wyth Moses, so wyll I be wyth the.

⁷ Nowe therfore deuyde thys land to enherete, vnto the nyne trybes, and the halfe trybe of Manasses.

⁴ For the chyldren of Ioseph were two trybes, Manasses and Ephraim. And therfore they gaue no parte vnto the Leuites in the lande, saue cyties to dwelle in, and the suburbes of the same, for their beastes & cattel

¹ And the lot of the children of Ioseph felle from Iordan by Iericho, vnto the water of Iericho Eastward, and the wildernesse that goeth vp from Iericho, thorow out mount Bethel, ² and then goeth out from Bethel to Lus, & runneth a longe vnto the borders of Arciatharoth, ³ and goeth doune westwarde, euen to the coastes of Iaphlethi, & vnto the coastes of Bethhoron the nether, & so to Gasor, & the endes of their coastes came to the sea. ⁴ And so the children of Ioseph, Manasses & Ephraim toke their enheritaunce. ⁵ An the children of Ephraim toke their coastes by kynredes. And the coastes of their enheritaunce Eastwarde were, Ataroth Ador, euen vnto Bethhoron the vpper, ⁶ and went out westwarde to Machmathah on the Northsyde, and compassed Eastwarde vnto Thaanath Silo, & past it on the Eastside vnto Ianoah, ⁷ & went doune from Ianoah to Ataroth & Naarath, and met at Iericho, & went out at Iordan. ⁸ And their borders wente from Thaphuah westwarde vnto the Riuer Kanah, & the endes were the sea. This is the enheritaunce of the tribe of the children of Ephraim in theyr kynredes, ⁹ & the bordering cities of the children of Ephraim, lye amonge the enheritaunce of the children of Manasses: euen al the cyties wt their villages. ¹⁰ Notwithstandinge they draue not out the Cananites that dwelte in Gasor: but the Cananites dwelt among the Ephraites vnto this daye, and paye tribute.

¹⁴ And the children of Ioseph spake vnto Iosua, saying: why hast thou geuen vs but one lot, and one porcion to enheret, seynge we be muche people, and for as muche as the Lorde hath blessed vs so, ¹⁵ and Iosua aunswered them: yf ye be much people, then get you vp to the wood countreye, and prepare for youre selues there in the lande of the Pheresytes and of the Raphaites, yf mounte Ephraym be to narowe for you. ¹⁶ Then the chyldren of Ioseph sayde agayn: the hyll wyll not begoten of vs, for al the Cananites, that dwell in the lowe countreye haue charettes of yron, and so haue they that enhabite Bethsean, and the tounes of the same, and they also that dwel in the valeye of Iezreel. ¹⁷ And Iosua aunswered the house of Ioseph, Ephraim and Manasses sayinge: ye be muche people and haue greate power and shall not therfore haue one lotte.

¹ And Iosua gathered all the trybes of Israel to Sichem, & called for the elders of Israel, and for theyr heades Iudges and offycers whiche presented them selues before God. ² And Iosua sayde vnto all the people, thus saith the Lord God of Israel: your fathers dwelt on the other syde of the floude in olde tyme euen Thareh the father of Abraham and Nachor, and serued straunge Goddes. ³ But I toke youre father Abraham from the other syde of the floude, and brought hym into the lande of Canaan, & multyplyed hys seede, and gaue hym Isaac ⁴ Iacob and Esau And I gaue vnto Esau mounte Seyr to possesse it. But Iacob and hys chyldren wente doune into Egypte. ⁵ Then I sent Moses and Aaron. And I plaged Egypte, after the maner as I dyd amonge them, ⁶ and after that I broughte you out, & I brought youre fathers out of Egypt And ye came vnto the sea: and the Egypcyans folowed after youre fathers wyth Charettes and horsmen, vnto the red sea. ⁷ And they cryed vnto the Lord. And he put darckenesse betwene you and the Egypcyans, and brought the sea vpon them, and couered them. And youre eyes haue sene what I haue done in Egypte. And ye dwelte in the wyldernesse a longe ceason. ⁸ And I brought you into the lande of the Amorites which dwelte on the other syde Iordan. And they foughte with you: and I gaue them into youre handes. And ye conquered theyr contre. And I destroyed them in your syghte. ⁹ Then Balak the sonne of Ziphor, Kynge of Moab arose and warred agaynste Israell and sent & called Balam the sonne of Beor for to cursse you. ¹⁰ But I wold not agre to herken vnto Balam, and therfore he blessed you: And I delyuered you out of hys hande. ¹¹ And when ye went ouer Iordan, and came vnto Iericho, the cytezens of Iericho foughte against you: the Amorytes, Pheresytes, Canaanytes, Hethytes, Girgosites, Heuites, Iebusites whiche I delyuered into youre handes. ¹² And I sent hornettes before you and ye cast out before you euen the two Kynges of the Amorites: but not with youre owne swerd or wyth your owne bowe. ¹³ And I gaue you a lande in whiche ye dyd no laboure, & cytyes which you buylt not, & ye dwelte in them. And vynes, and Olyue trees which ye planted not, and ye ate of them. ¹⁴ And nowe feare the Lorde and serue hym in purenesse and truthe: And put awaye the Goddes which youre fathers serued on the other syde of the floude, and in Egypt, & serue the Lorde. ¹⁵ But yf it seme euyll vnto you to serue the Lorde, then chose you thys day whom you wyll serue whether the Goddes whiche youre fathers serued that were on the other syde of the floude, eyther the Goddes of the Amorytes in whose lande, ye dwelte, and I & my house wyll serue the Lorde. ¹⁶ And the people aunswered and sayd, God forbyd that we shulde forsake the Lorde and serue straunge Goddes. ¹⁷ For the Lorde oure God he it is that brought vs and our fathers out of the lande of Egypte, the house of bondage, and whiche dyd those myracles in oure syght, and preserued vs in all the waye we went and amonge all the nacyons whiche we came thorow. ¹⁸ And the Lorde dyd cast out before vs all the nacyons wyth the Amorytes, whiche dwelt in the lande, wherfore we wyll serue the Lorde, for he is oure God. ¹⁹ But Iosua sayde vnto the people, ye can not serue the Lorde: for he is an holye God & cannot beare youre transgressyon and synne. ²⁰ But when ye haue forsaken the Lorde and haue serued straunge Goddes, he wyll turne and do you euyll, and consume you, after that he hath done you good. ²¹ And the people aunswered Iosua: naye, but we wyll serue the Lorde. ²² Then Iosua sayde vnto the folke, ye are wytnesses vnto youre selues, that ye haue chosen you the Lorde, to serue hym: and they said we are wytnesses. ²³ Then put awaye, sayde he the straung Goddes which are among you, and bowe your hertes vnto the Lorde God of Israell. ²⁴ And the people aunswered Iosua: the Lorde oure God we wyll serue, & hys voyce we wyl obey. ²⁵ And so Iosua made a couenaunt wyth the people the same daye, and set ordynaunces and lawes before them in Sichem. ²⁶ And Iosua wrote these wordes in the boke of the lawe of God, and toke a great stone and pytched it on ende in the sayde place euen vnder an ocke that stode in the sanctuarye of the Lorde. ²⁷ And Iosua sayde vnto all the people: beholde, thys stone shalbe a wytnesse vnto vs, for it hath hearde all the wordes of the Lorde whiche he spake wyth vs. It shalbe therfore a wytnesse vnto you, leste ye lye vnto youre God. ²⁸ And so Iosua let the people departe euery man vnto hys enherytaunce. ²⁹ And after these thynges the tyme came that Iosua the sonne of Nun and the seruaunte of the Lorde dyed beynge an hundreth and ten yeares olde. ³⁰ Whom they buryed in the cuntrey of hys enherytaunce, euen in Thamnath sareh whiche is in mount Ephraim, on the north syde of the hyll of Gaas. ³¹ And Israel serued the Lorde all the dayes of Iosua, and all the dayes of the elders that ouer lyued Iosua, and whiche had sene al the worckes of the Lorde that he had done to Israell. ³² And the bones of Ioseph, whiche the chyldren of Israell brought oute of Egypte, they buryed in Sichem, in a parcell of ground which Iacob bought of the sonnes of Hemor the father of Sichem, for an hundreth peaces of syluer, which parcell became the enherytaunce of the chyldren of Ioseph.

¹ And the angell of the Lorde came vp from Galgall to Bocim, and sayde, I broughte you oute of Egypt and haue brought you vnto the lande whiche I sware vnto your fathers. And I sayde that I wolde neuer breake myne appoyntment wyth you, ² but ye shulde haue made no couenaunt with the enhabytours of thys lande, ye shuld haue broken doune theyr aultares: But ye haue not obeyed my voyce, why haue ye thys done? ³ wherfore I haue lykewyse determyned that I wyll not cast them out before you: but they shalbe in the sydes of you, and theyr Goddes shalbe snares vnto you. ⁴ And when the Angel of the Lorde had spoken these wordes vnto al the chyldren of Israel, the people cryed oute & wepte.

And the angel of the Lord vanyshed out of his sight. ²² And when Gedeon perceyued that it was an angel, he sayd: Alas my Lorde Iehouah, that I haue sene an angell of the Lord face to face. ²³ And the Lorde sayde vnto him: peace be with the & feare not, for thou shalte not dye. ²⁴ Then Gedeon made an aultar there vnto the Lorde & called it Iehouah Salom, which vnto thys daye is yet in Ephrath that pertayneth vnto the father of the Eserites.

²³ So now seyng the Lorde God of Israel hath cast out the Amorites before his people, shouldeste thou possesse the land?

¹ There was a man of Ramathaim Zophim, of mount Ephraim named Elkanah, the sonne of Ieroham, the sonne of Elihu, the sonne of Thohu, the sonne of zuph an Ephratite:

²⁷ and for thys ladde I praied, & the Lorde hath geuen me my desyre which I asked of him:

²⁰ And Eli blessed Elkanah and hys wyfe: and sayde: the Lorde geue the seede of thys woman, for that she hath lent the Lord. And they went vnto their owne whome. ²¹ And the Lorde visited Hannah so that she conceyued and bare thre sonnes & two doughters But the boye Samuel grewe dwellynge styll with the Lorde.

² And it chaunsed at that tyme, that Eli laye in his place, & his eyes began to waxe dimme, that he could not se.

² And now when thou art departed from me, thou shalte mete two men by Rahels sepulchre in the borders of Beniamin euen at Zalezah. And they wyl say vnto the: the asses which thou wenteste to seke, are founde se, thy father hath lefte the care of the asses, and soroweth for you saying what shal I do for my sonne?

⁷ But the Lorde sayde vnto Samuel: loke not on his fashion nor on the height of hys stature, for I haue refused hym. Because it is not as man seyth. For man loketh on the outward apperaunce, but the Lorde beholdeth the harte.

² I must walke by the way of all the world, neuerthelater be thou strong and quyte thy self manfully, ³ and se that thou kepe thy appointment of the Lorde thy God, that thou walke in his waies and kepe his commaundementes, ordinaunce, lawes and testimonies, euen as it is written in the law of Moses: that thou mayest vnderstand al that thou oughtest to do, and al that thou shouldest medyll wyth. ⁴ That the Lorde maye make good his promesse whiche he hath promised me sayinge: yf thy children shal take heede to their wayes, that they walke before me in truthe, with all their hertes and with al their soules, then thou shalt neuer be without one syttynge on the seate of Israell.

¹⁹ And thervpon Bethsabe went vnto kynge Salomon to speake vnto hym for Adoniah. And the kynge rose vp agaynst her & bowed hym selfe vnto her, and sat him doune on hys seate. And there was a seate for the kynges mother, and she sat on his right syde.
